1.0 Introduction

WebSynch is an easy-to-use FTP (File Transfer Protocol) client program for Macintosh specifically made to simplify updating Web sites. It allows synchronyzation between a local folder on a mac with a directory on a FTP server.

1.1 Description

WebSynch uses the FTP protocol (File Transfer Protocol) to transfer files and can thus also be used to download FTP sites (see Usage Examples).
WebSynch combines the ease of use of the Macintosh interface with a powerful FTP engine. The result is a unique program which becomes essential if you often update your Web Site or want to keep track of new files on a FTP server.

Here are some of the features of WebSync:
very easy to use Finder-like Interface.
fully threaded synchronization, allowing to work on other things during this time.
Use of Internet Config for default FTP server, FTP proxy, file type mapping (WebSynch can function without IC but it works much better if IC is installed).
Supports a wide variety of FTP servers, works with all popular FTP servers like wu-ftp, NetPresenz and Windows NT FTP.
Customisable with a set of useful preferences.
Mirrored/Non mirrored Download and Upload.
(to come) Continue transfer of the file if the transfer was canceled.
Various synchronization modes using the file date and/or the size.
And last, but not least, Ability to Up/Download only the files that have changed.

1.2 Usage Examples

To guide you in your first step, consult the section "First Step".

1.2.1 Uploading A Web Site

WebSynch allows you to keep a Web site up to date with a local copy.
The user has a local copy of the Web site, after the first synchronization, WebSynch knows the folder state, the user can then modify any files he wishes in the folder without being concerned with what has to be uploaded. The next time you run WebSynch, it will display in the tab "Local" the file list of the local folder with their state: nothing changed, modified, new, server file. The user can see directly in this list which will be the file concerned by the next synchronization, he can choose to exclude some directly in this tab (the state is used only if the synchronization mode is "Clever").

1.2.2 Downloading A FTP Site

WebSynch allows you to maintain the mirror of a FTP site and to download only the new files.
For example the metrowerks FTP site . The user wants to have a local copy of this site, he just has to create a local folder and then launch the synchronization in download (with or without mirror). This operation will download all the files/folders available on this server, 2 problems with this:
* maybe the user doesn't want to have all the files locally.
* if the user, after the synchronization wishes not to keep one of the downloaded files and erases it, the next synchronization will then donwload the, files not present in local and it's maybe not what he wants.
Surprised, WebSynch has a solution to solve this problem and it's "server file" (see Server File)

1.3 Explanation of terms

Web Site - When I use this term, I use it in the direction of "FTP Server" where is stored your Web site.
