I remember when they used to sell 2x CD-ROMs in the store. Oh, if only I could save up enough money to get a 4x, I would be flying along at top speed. Then came 8x, then 12x, then... well, you get the picture. Nowadays, I believe they're up to somewhere around 40x. Man--that's pretty darn fast. Of course, that might be the actual speed at which your CD-ROM is accessed. Depending on where data is stored on a CD-ROM, the drive will read it faster or slower.
