My, that's a lovely dot you're wearing today; it goes well with your monitor. When playing with pictures in the print world, you may hear something called 'DPI' (Dots Per Inch). The higher a graphic's DPI, the better its printed output will be. However, the Internet is a different story. Since we can't jack our brain directly into a video card, we use monitors to view stuff on the Web. The highest DPI you'll get from this 'monitored' environment is seventy-two. So, if you're making images for use on the Internet, you won't need to scan or save them much higher than 72 DPI. Plus, you'll save on overall file size by tweaking that number.
