Shortcuts were designed for quick file and folder access. I've seen some novice Desktops littered with dozens of shortcuts pointing to the same program; redundant, but common. If you've got a 'bad' shortcut, Windows may automatically try to fix the broken association for you. But, the shortcut doesn't need to be orphaned for you to access it's target. Right-click on a shortcut, pull up its properties, flip to the 'Shortcut' tab, and press the 'Find Target' button. Presto! You're instantaneously transported to a different part of your computer; this method may be quicker than using the Windows Explorer for folder navigation.
