FAQ - Win2000/NT/XP
I get a message that mbmio.sys is not loaded/started
under Windows 2000/NT
There are 2 solutions here:
1) go to your device manager, locate the service giveio (you might need to enable "show all hidden deviced under win2000) and start it manualy, all should be okay then
2) reinstall MBM 5 and the installer will check for the GiveIO driver, 2 things can happen:
a) The giveIO driver has been found running and you get the question if you want to reinstall it again, select YES after which you get a screen where you can select the startup for the giveIO driver
b) The giveIO driver has not been found running and you get no question and go straight to the screen where you can select the startup for the giveIO driver
Once you are at this screen you can select to start the giveIO driver in 3 ways (explenation taken from Win32 API Help File):
Automatic: Specifies a device driver or service started by the service control manager automatically during system startup.
System: Specifies a device driver started by the I/O system after boot devices such as the boot file system and disk driver have been initialized. The device driver started using this flag is not critical to the system boot.
Boot: Specifies a device driver started by the operating system loader.
Automatic is the default setting and seems to work 99% of the time in Windows NT and 2000, if that fails to start the GiveIO driver then 1st try System which almost always solves the not loading problem on the 1% of Windows NT and 2000 machines left and also seems to work best on windows XP
I am running Win2000/NT how do I install MBM 5
If your running with FAT32 then there should be no
problem. If your running with NTFS then please take the following
into account:
1) That under NTFS, non-admins CAN'T install the program
2) You have to change the permissions on the Data and Logs (if used) folders to give write permissions to any Users (or group) that you want to be able to execute the program.
3) that you must manually copy the MBM5 Start-->Programs folder from the Admin account to any other user profiles that you want to have access to the shortcuts.
I get an error that basicly says it cannot write to
the file "MBM 5 Dashboard.ini" or "MBM 5.ini"
if you are logged in under NT/2000 it means you have
no R&W rights to these files, contact your system
administrator and ask for these rights.
A MBM user came up with the following answer:
OK I figured it out. And it's very easy.
Go to Control Panel-->Folder Options--> Click on "View" tab.
Scroll down to "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" and UNcheck it.
Now go to the folder that MBM is installed and right click on it, select "Properties"
Click on "Security" tab.
Highlight the Group(s) you want to have access to MBM files.
In the lower window put a check in the "write" box under the "allow" column.
That's it!
When installing under win2000 I get a "internal
error"
This happend only once as far as I know, it has to
do with the temp directory setup under win2000, Wise install does
not handle it very well. The answer is to delete the two 'errant'
TMP and TEMP entries in the enviroment variables that point to .\USERPROFILE%\,
they then should point to C:\WINNT\TEMP
My dashboard appear to open only minimized
This seems to be an issue with the transparency
feature, please open the file "Mbm 5 dashboard.ini"
located in the mbm\data directory.
Once you have this file open add this line "Dashboard Transparency Off=1" to the [general] section, save the file and re-open the dashboard. It should work like normal now, except that the slider has no effect
