How do I install PalmPilot/Palm III Applications? Can I install more than one at a time?

• The Palm Install Tool (Still called INSTAPP) that comes with OS 3.0 allows you to install multiple files at one time. By adding a shortcut to your C:\WINDOWS\SENDTO directory, you can also send multiple files to this program.
• You can use the INSTAPP program to install one application, then copy all the other .prc and .pdb files to the X:\PILOTDIR\USER\INSTALL directory. There is a flag in the system registry of Windows 95 that is"flipped" to indicate to the Hotsync process there are applications to be installed. HotSync will install all applications it finds in this directory if this flag is set. You can make this method a little easier by setting up the installation directory as a shortcut in the SendTo menu.
• You can use the PInstall program written by Mark Pierce. This program allows you to either double click or (after installing in the Send To Directory) right click and SendTo one or multiple files for install at the next HotSync. PInstall sets the required flag in the Registry AND copies the file(s) to the proper installation directory.
• Harry Ohlsen has written a shareware application that allows you to install all of your applications after a hard-reset. The application is called Ripcord and also attempts to install applications in such a manner as to minimize memory fragmentation (an issue eliminated by the 1.0.6 patch, and OS 2.x). Recent versions include the ability to associate .prc/.pdb files with Ripcord and install with a double click (SendTo works, but currently with just one file).
• Eric Eilebrecht has written Silent App Installer. This application allows you to set up .prc and .pdb files such that installing them only requires a double click and a push of the Hotsync button. Note: No known home page exists for this app anymore.
• Ain McKendrick has written Pilot Install Tool Pro 1.0. This application allows you to schedule PalmPilot files (*.PRC, *.PDB) for installation to your PalmPilot. The interface displays a list of all pending installs for a selected user and provides buttons to Add/Remove files from the list. This makes is easier to schedule repeated installs compared to the standard PalmPilot Install Tool. This program can be found at PilotGear HQ.
• A great application for Mac users is Palm Buddy. This is a finder-like link between the Mac and the PalmPilot that allows drag and drop install of applications, as well as on-the-fly conversions (for example, txt files are converted to Doc and installed). Can't recommend enough.
• Another one for Mac users is SimpleInst, a freeware droplet by Yukinari Suzuki. Just drop any number of .prc files onto the SimpleInst icon and they will be painlessly scheduled for installation.
