8th December 2000

Oh, Windows. We have a love / hate relationship. Mostly love at this point, thankfully. I was with you back in the days of 2.0, though you fell from grace when 3.11 hit the streets. In a matter of years, the 95 kernel rolled around and ushered in a new era of 32-bit peace. Then NT 4.0 was tossed into... 98 came along and the... Millennium Edition... with Windows CE... and... okay, I'm lost. Somebody's all over the map here, but I'm not naming any names. For now, I'll stick with Windows 2000 as my Desktop operating system; it appears to be the most stable Microsoft product. But what about those apps which aren't too happy with my upgrade? I attempt to shut them up with the Application Compatibility tool. It's found on the Windows 2000 installation CD-ROM within the Support folder (APCOMPAT.EXE). Think of it as a pseudo-emulator, designed to keep uncooperative programs in line. At least, as far as Windows 2000 is concerned.
