Icons are pretty darn cool, but they're used to represent something (either a program or type of file). There's more information in an icon than meets the eye. Just select one and hit ALT+Enter and it should bring up a window with detailed information (file size, date, type, location, attributes, etc.). If you ALT+Enter on a Shortcut, it should show another tab (wherein you can change the icon, location, etc.). Or, instead of the key combo, you can hold onto the ALT key and double click on an icon to see all that stuff.
