(*) Intelligent Lockergnome Subscriber Mike Reed has a great tip for those who are afraid to post their e-mail address online for fear of spam robots (spambots?) which harvest e-mail addresses. He says by using this as a link for your e-mail address, it will confuse today's robots, but not today's mail programs: mailto:%20email@server.com Very clever trick!
(*) Faithful Lockergnome Subscriber Mike Glen has a cool tip for Outlook Express users: Make sure you have the Folder List showing (select from View | Layout | Basic). Now, when you are reading the current Lockergnome epistle and want to save a portion for later Internet activation, click and drag to highlight what you want, then drag that selection onto the Draft folder icon in the folder list. OE will open up an e-mail message, but if you close the message and click YES to save it, the message will be there for future use.
(*) Satisfied Lockergnome Subscriber Randy Hamilton warns against using Microsoft RegClean v4.1 with any Visual Studio Application. You might find that the Database Designer and/or LinkView tools will no longer work. If you're having problems, simply reinstall the Visual Studio applications and your system should be back to normal.
(*) Trying to get ahold of me in IRC? My handle is ^gnome^ and if you want to catch me online, I'll be on an EFnet server in #lockergnome off and on. This will be your chance to meet other Lockergnomers online. Until we get Lockergnome newsgroups, this'll have to suffice. :) Once again, just connect to an EFnet server (like irc.primenet.com or irc.mindspring.com) and enter #lockergnome when you get on! Hopefully, I'll see you there.
(*) Using IE4 bookmarks can be fun. Well, not as fun as a roller coaster ride at night, but almost as exciting. You can access all sorts of information for individual bookmarks in IE4 by simply highlighting them in the Favorites menu and then right clicking on them. This is extremely handy if you want to copy, rename, or delete different sites from the menu.
(*) Here's another typing shortcut for you slow typers. If the site address you're looking for starts with a "www" and ends in a "com" then you're in luck. In either Netscape Navigator 4.x or IE 4.x, just type in the root word (for example, lockergnome). Yep, just type that word, hit Enter, and wait a few seconds for "www.lockergnome.com" to automatically load.
(*) If you already have OSR2 (Windows 95B) installed, you probably don't have DMA (Direct Memory Access) turned on. Having DMA enabled allows your computer to access that device without having to go through the processor (in essence, speeding up data transfer). DMA is only applicable to CD-ROMs and hard drives, I believe. First, get your System Properties (click on the System icon in the Control Panel). Look for the Windows 95 version (either 4.00.950 with no letter, A, or B). If it says B, you can move on. Note that your hard drive has to be IDE and the Windows 95B default bus mastering drivers must be installed in order for this to work. To enable DMA:
1. Open the Control Panel 2. Click on the System icon 3. Select the Device Manager tab 4. Open the Disk Drives icon 5. Highlight your hard drive then Click properties 6. Click the "settings" tab and check the box next to "DMA" 7. Restart the system when prompted 8. Repeat for any additional hard or CD-ROM drives
(*) Looking for legacy hardware (old parts)? Check out the place where I get my Matrox cards: http://www.pitnet.net/b1comreb/ (Computer Reboot). They're a great little computer reseller here in Cedar Falls, IA, and I believe they'll ship worldwide. Just let 'em know that Lockergnome sent ya!
