The Tactile12000 puts a full set of DJ gear on your desktop - it is a 3-D, fully interactive, digital DJ setup - two turntables and a mixer. You can crossfade, backspin, and speed up and slow down music, including MP3 files, on your computer. Version 2.0 was featured in Ray Gun magazine and Print Magazine's Interaction Design 2000. It supports for loading music from your hard drive, playlist management and automatic mixing, cueing on headphones, keyboard control, and more precise control of the mixer and turntables. Version 2.1 adds support for PCs with multiple sound cards, fixes many bugs, and is both free and open-source.
Windows: Pentium PC (200 MHz or faster recommended), Windows 95/98/2000/ME or NT 4.0 (service pack 3). DirectX 3.0 or later, QuickTime 3.0 or 4.0 required for AIFF and compressed WAV files. For best performance, a quality sound card such as the SoundBlaster is recommended, and make sure you have the latest DirectX drivers for your card.
Macintosh: MacOS 7.5.3 or newer (OS 8 or newer recommended), PowerPC (G3/G4 or iMac recommended for best performance). QuickTime and Sound Manager extensions required. QuickTime 4.1 required for MP3 playback.
Registration is no longer required. If you like the software and feel obligated to support it, you can use the Amazon honor system to make a contribution. Donations will allow us more time to devote to updating the software. There are no serial numbers or registration numbers, so you do not have to wait for anything to be returned.

Playing back music:
To load music onto the turntables, press the load button at the bottom. This opens the standard file dialog allowing you to choose a sound file on your computer. A record slides out and you may drag the new track to either turntable. Use the green start button next to the record to start the turntable. Drag the tonearm to around to skip within the track.
To use a track that you have previously loaded, use the arrow buttons next to the track name to show the track you wish to play, then press the Select button to get the record for the track.
Press the playlist button to reorder and delete tracks. Use the autoMix mode to playback tracks in your playlist automatically. The Tactile12000 automatically plays your tracks in order and mixes them together.
Any files you wish to use should be downloaded to your computer ahead of time; the Tactile 12000 uses a lot of CPU power and disk/bus bandwidth, so performance will suffer if you are also downloading music. If your computer and connection are fast enough however, you may be able to download MP3 files as you mix.
On Windows, if you have multiple sound cards with DirectX drivers, you may preview a track using headphones plugged into one sound card while playing back another over speakers plugged into the other card. To enable this feature, use the options button in the lower right of the screen, and specify which card is to be used for the main output, and which for cue. Note that some computers will show multiple options for the same card, or give an option labeled "emulated" for other devices on your computer. None of these options will work for proper cueing.
Note that in order to play back each track on both sound cards, the computer has to supply both cards with the same data and keep them synchronized. This is very demanding on system resources and may not work well if your computer is not fast enough. Also, we obviously cannot test most possible sound card combinations, so we may not have seen problems that are specific to a particular sound card or pair of cards.
Otherwise, if you have only one card, the cueing feature plays back the cue channels in the left stereo channel. If the cue feature is turned off, the main output plays back in both stereo channels. Once it is turned on, the main output only plays through the right channel.
This second implementation is available because most PCs only have a single stereo output. To use the Tactile12000 as a DJ mixing application, you will have to direct only the right channel output to a stereo amplifier and direct the left channel to a pair of headphones. You will probably need special cables for this.
