Most web pages specify a text encoding that determines how characters are displayed in the page. However, some web pages do not specify a text encoding. When you open one of these web pages, Safari uses the default text encoding selected in the General preferences pane.
To avoid seeing garbled text, you should select a default text encoding that corresponds to the characters of the language used in the web pages you open most often. For example, if you primarily open pages that use Japanese characters, then you should change the default text encoding to one of the Japanese encodings. |
