Safari Icon   Selecting a text encoding

Most web pages specify a text encoding that determines how characters are displayed in the page. However, some web pages do not specify a text encoding. When you open one of these web pages, Safari uses the default text encoding selected in the General preferences pane.

To avoid seeing garbled text, you should select a default text encoding that corresponds to the characters of the language used in the web pages you open most often. For example, if you primarily open pages that use Japanese characters, then you should change the default text encoding to one of the Japanese encodings.

Choose Preferences from the Safari menu then click Appearance. Choose the appropriate encoding for the web pages from the Default Encoding pop-up menu.

If the text in a page you open is garbled, you can change the encoding used for the page. To change the encoding used for the page, choose Text Encoding from the View menu then choose an appropriate encoding for the page.
