Error code 691: The computer you're dialing in to cannot establish a Dial-Up Networking connection.
Check the password and try again.

This error message occurs when your user name or password are not entered correctly. Check the following options:

  1. Is the login name entered correctly?
  2. Is the password entered correctly?
  3. Are you dialling a ...888 number?
  4. Do you use ISDN in combination with the phone number click here for your local dial-up number?
  5. The password file has been damaged

1.     Is the login name entered correctly?

  • Double-click on My Computer.

  • Next, double-click on Dial-Up Networking.

  • Double-click on the World Online connection.
  • In the next screen - Connect to - the user name must be entered correctly.
  • You will find your user name in your subscription confirmation. A user name can consist of up to 8 characters and should always entered in small letters!

3.     Are you dialling a 888 number?

·         If you are dialling a 888 number, you may encounter a password error, although all settings seem to be in order. If that is the case, you probably need a more recent password. The password should not be older than 6 months.

4.     Do you use ISDN in combination with the phone number click here for you local dial-up number?

  • Sometimes, when you use ISDN to connect to your dial-up number, you may receive the message that a password error occurred. Adding the area code directly in front of the phone number, may solve this problem. Off course, this is only necessary when you are sure you entered the correct password..

5.     The password file has been damaged

·         Finally, the possibility exists that the file in which your password is kept, has been damaged. This is totally beyond your control. You can try to solve this, by tracing the location of your password files and renaming them.
Go to Start, click Find and then select Files or folders. Enter the search string *.pwl. Rename all files found to *.old. You may even decide to remove the files completely. Restart the computer to deactivate your password file. After restarting you will be required to enter your password again, and it will be saved into a new password file. This should solve your problem
