Why does it take so long for password authentication to take place?

When it takes a long time to establish a connection, this may be caused by Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking. This document guides you through the settings that may have to be changed. After these settings have been corrected, your connection will be established with optimal speed.

  • To check the settings in Dial-Up Networking, please double-click on My computer on your desktop.

  • In Dial-Up Networking you will find a connection named World Online. This connection contains all settings for your Internet connection. To check the settings, click the icon with your right mouse button and select Properties .

  • The first screen that will be displayed, contains the general settings for World Online. No changes are required here, to speed up your connection. Click on the Server Type tab. Instead of a tab, you may have to use the button on the right of your screen.

  • Possibly Windows 95 or Windows 98 is trying to log on to an External network, in order to contact another computer in a WAN (Wide Area Network). This is not an option for your Internet connection. Therefore, the option Log on to network should be unchecked.
  • Please make sure your settings correspond with the ones given in the picture above. The Windows 95 software compression is not entirely compatible with the official PPP protocol. Therefore, uncheck Enable software compression. This will decrease the logon time considerably.
  • Next click on the button Settings, on the right of TCP/IP. The following screen will be displayed.

  • In this screen, you can uncheck the option Use IP header compression, to speed up your logon procedure.
  • Your Dial-Up Networking is now set for password authentication with optimal speed.
