What is downloading? How do I go about it?

Downloading means copying data (e.g. programs, pictures) from one computer to another one. One way to start downloading something, is by clicking a link on a webpage. Below, an example of a download is shown.

  • After you click a link to start downloading a file, the screen shown on the left will be displayed. You will be asked to decide what to do with the file. By clicking OK you can choose to save the file to your hard disk and the file will be transferred from the original computer to your computer.

  • Next, you will be asked where you wish to save the file. Choose any location on your hard disk and continue with Save. In the example on the left, the folder My documents is used.

  • The downloading procedure will be started now. All data from the computer on which the file is stored, will be copied to your computer. In this screen the following information is displayed:
  • Estimated time left: - The time needed to download the file.
  • Download to: - The location where the file will be placed.
  • Transfer rate: - The speed at which downloading takes place.

  • Download completed. The file has now been saved to the folder of your choice. To open the file, click on the button Open. To look inside the folder to which the file was saved, click on the button Open folder.
