Frequently Asked Questions - irc

What is irc?
Internet Relay Chat (irc) was the first chat program. It uses decentralized servers; anybody who wants to can set up an irc server and run it on their machine.

How do I get an irc account?
It depends on the server you're trying to talk to. Most servers do not require accounts to be created -- pick a nick and sign on.

What do I enter for the password?
You only need to enter a password if your nick is registered on the server. If it's not, or you don't understand what this is talking about, leave it blank.

Why doesn't Fire support the irc command line?
Fire is a GUI chat client. As such, common irc commands are supported, but they're integrated into the GUI. Most commands are available by control-clicking on a user name in the chat list.

How do I join a channel?
Create a buddy with the name of the channel, but without the prefixial #. For example, to join #fire, create a buddy named "fire".

How do I send messages to the services (NickServ, ChanServ, etc)?
Select "IM to Other" from the Accounts menu, type in the service name (this works for all users on IRC, not just the Servs)

Does Fire support DCC?
Not yet.

How do I do a /me action?
In the Chat Window preferences, you can configure either the Return or Enter key to send actions, instead of a message. This setting will override the global behavior of Return or Enter when in an irc chat room.

How do I tell who the ops are?
In the chat list, ops show up as red. Voiced users show up in blue.

What features does Fire support?
1. Person-to-Person chat
2. Group chat
3. irc commands (via the GUI): /me, /msg, /kick, /nick, /op, /voice, /topic
