Install Driver and Setup PPP for MacOS

This section provides step by step procedures for USB device driver installation and PPP setup on MacOS.

Install Driver for MacOS

ZyXEL Omni 56K USB can only work on Macintosh with O.S. version 9.0.5 or above due to the incorrect built-in CDC(Communications Device Class) drivers provided by Apple. If your MacOS is below 9.0.5, please follow the instructions below to install the USB device driver on your Macintosh.

  1. Check your O.S. version by clicking on the "Apple Menu" followed by the "Apple System Profiler".

  1. If your MacOS version is less than 9.0.0 then upgrade to 9.0.0 at http://asu.info.apple.com. Then download O.S. 9.0.4 patch file from the site http://asu.info.apple.com/swupdates.nsf/searchresults?searchview&query=Mac+OS+9.0.4 to upgrade your system to version 9.0.4.
  2. Go to ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Development_Kits/Mac_OS_USB/ and download the USB DDK with a version equal to or greater then 1.4.6f4. For example, USB_DDK_1.4.6f4.img.hqx is a good choice. After your download, your desktop will have an icon named USB_DDK_1.4.6f4 for easy access.
  3. Replace the file "Macintosh HD::System Folder::Extensions::USB Device Extension" with the same file name from the DDK folder. That is, move the file "Macintosh HD::System Folder::Extensions::USB Device Extension" to a different folder and copy the file "Desktop::USB_DDK_1.4.6f4::Extensions-AppleBuilt::USB Device Extension" to the folder "Macintosh HD::System Folder::Extensions". Be sure to reboot your computer to ensure that the changes take effect.
  4. Copy the Modem Script file "Modem Scripts::ZyXEL Omni56K USB" located on the companion CD to your "Modem Scripts" folder. Normally, the "Modem Scripts" folder is located on "Macintosh HD::System Folder::Extensions::Modem Scripts".
  5. Plug your "ZyXEL Omni 56K USB" Modem into one of your root hub ports. Macintosh will recognize the modem automatically.

Congratulations, you have finished the USB device driver installation for your MacOS. Following is the information to setup PPP connection for Internet-Access.

  3. Choose ZyXEL Omni56K USB from the Modem pop-up menu.
  4. Close and save.

Setup TCP/IP for PPP

  4. The most common selection is Using PPP Server which causes OT/PPP to request IP address from the server when it connects.
  5. Enter name server addresses.
  6. Close and save.

Setup Remote Access(or PPP)

  1. Choose Control Panels from Apple Menu and open the Remote Access(or PPP) control panel. You will see a window as shown below:
