Voice Quality Problems.

This page lists some hints on how to improve voice quality and solutions to common problems found when using First Contact Communicator that cause degraded voice quality.

First Contact Communicator works best with a headset instead of a microphone and a speaker. With the headset, you can reduce echo and noise level significantly.

The voice quality can be tested and fine tuned using the Test Sound utility.

Some helpful tips to improve sound quality:

We recommend you to equip your PC with a headset. Using a headset reduces background noise, echoes and distortions.
If you use a microphone and speaker as the sound input/output device, the sound from the speaker may be recorded once again through your microphone and the other users will hear their voice on the background of your voice. When using First Contact in the Voice Activated mode (i.e. not using the Push-To-Talk mode), this condition can cause very loud feedback noise. Reduce the volume of the speakers and/or the input gain of the microphone. If possible, try positioning microphone farther back than the speakers, having the speakers facing forward.
Even when using a headset, some people might still get echoes. The best way to solve the problem is to play around with the "Volume Control".  Try lowering the speaker volume and microphone gain. There will be a point where the echo disappears. An easy way to get access to the Volume Control is by pressing the "Volume Control" button on the advanced page of the Options Dialog.
The positioning of the microphone also plays an important role in the voice quality. You should speak about an inch or two from the microphone. Speaking too closely to the microphone may introduce distortion in the voice, resulting in low voice quality, some times barely understandable.
