How do I pick a counter?
- There are two places a counter may run.
- On the same machine your HTML page is served from.
- On another HTTP server (Highly recommended for novices).
- If you have wish to run the counter on your HTTP server.
- Then you must have three things (okay, maybe four).
- You must know what Operating System your HTTP server is running.
- Experience with CGI (or a willingness to learn).
- Access to the directory on the HTTP server where scripts are installed.
- I also highly recommend you know what HTTP server is being run at your site.
- Proceed to the Software page and select a counter appropriate for
your Operating System.
- Follow the link to the home site for that counter implementation.
- Download it and read the directions. There should be directions about how to install and use it.
- If you wish to have the counter run on another machine (Highly recommended for novices).
- Go to the Software page and select a counter from the
"Hosted" section of the list.
- Follow the link to the site. You should find directions there about how to use the counter.
What is a hosted counter?
- A Hosted counter is when the counter software is actually running on a different
HTTP server from the one the HTML page which is being counted is on.
What is an HTTP server?
- This is the piece of software which responds to Netscape, Internet Explorer, or
any other Web browser. It responds by sending the HTML page to the user.
- If you don't know what this is, I highly recommend you use one of the Hosted counters.
