MacConnect Server Colo FAQ

We've prepared this list of frequently asked questions concerning our Mac server colocation packages to help prospective customers get a better feel for what MacConnect is all about.

How are you connected to the Internet?

MacConnect enjoys a combined Internet feed totaling 49 megabits per second. This includes a T-3 connection to CERFNet, with T-1 connections to PSINet, GTE Internetworking (BBN Planet), and UUNet (via LINet).

What does your server room look like?

The MacConnect Long Island data center is located in secure telecommunication facilities (we're colocated with Teleport Communications Group (TCG)) with all equipment housed in carrier grade relay racks. We've got dual environmental control systems which maintain temperature at 65 - 72 degrees (F) with humidity at 20%. We've also got 3 hours of battery backup with immediate access to enough diesel generator power to run the data center for weeks at a time. We also have a state of the art "card reader" access system that keeps our servers behind 3 strictly regulated access doors.

How will you make sure my server is running?

We use Maxum's Page Sentry package to check customer servers on a five minute interval. This will actually check for active connections on specific TCP/IP ports, so we can check your actual webserver, mail, ftp or DNS packages to be sure they are running. If you need a reboot, we're right there to do it for you. If you need a reboot at 3AM on Christmas morning, our remote power management system will get you where you need to be!

Will you back up my data for me?

We run nightly backups of all MacConnect and customer servers to network disk drives, with weekly backups to removable media. All server colocation packages include this service free of charge.

Will you provide me with a backup server if mine fails?

That is something we do not generally do, however if you would like us to mirror some or all of your site on one of our servers to provide an extra measure of reliability, we can do that with an additional charge. If you are running WebSTAR, our QuickDNS servers will handle this nicely.

How do I get help if I need it?

Our Customer Care center is staffed 9AM - Midnight and is reachable via toll free telephone call. After hours, you will have access to our support staff via pager.

Is there a minimum commitment to make?

Server colocation generally requires a one year contract with us, with payment for the first month and setup fee due at the inception of your service. Customers are invoiced each month thereafter. Our standard colocation contract allows you to cancel at no charge if we fail to provide a working network connection more than 3 times during the course of the contract, so we're willing to put our money where our collective mouth is!

Are you insured?

Of course! We carry full coverage on all equipment housed in our facility, including customer equipment. Our coverage is with ITT/Hartford, one of the oldest and most stable commercial insurance carriers on the planet today.
