SuperDoku is a comprehensive Sudoku program for RISC OS. It has four main features:
The rest of this page introduces these features. You may also wish to read about:
Standard grids are available in five sizes: 4×4, 6×6, 9×9, 16×16 and 25×25.
Samurai puzzles consist of five overlapping 9×9 grids. Solve according to the usual rules, but with the added twist that 36 squares appear in more than one grid.
Killer puzzles have a blank 4×4, 6×6, 9×9 or Samurai grid with areas drawn out in which no value may be repeated and where the values in each area must add up to the total shown. More details on Killer puzzles
Comparison puzzles have a 4×4, 6×6 or 9×9 grid with arrows showing which of two neighbouring squares in a block has the smaller value. More details on Comparison puzzles
Hidden word puzzles are just like normal 4×4, 6×6, 9×9 or Samurai puzzles except that letters are used instead of numbers, and when the puzzle is complete you will find a word reading across one of the rows or down one of the columns. More details on hidden word puzzles
You may choose easy, moderate or difficult puzzles to suit your ability or mood. You may also choose whether the grid is generated in a symmetrical manner, according to your taste.
You may also start with a blank grid of any size, and create your own puzzles or type them in from another source.
Incomplete puzzles may be saved to try again another time.
SuperDoku will also load in many puzzles saved by similar applications in CSV or plain text format. Simply drag the file to the puzzle window or SuperDoku's iconbar icon.
SuperDoku was originally developed to help me when I had got stuck on a puzzle. Four different sorts of help are provided:
You cannot fill in a square with a value which is obviously impossible: if that value already exists in the same row, column or block, SuperDoku will not let you enter it again. This feature may be disabled in the Choices window.
Note that SuperDoku will allow you to enter values in Killer puzzles which do not add up to the correct total.
Hint on which square to try next: the caret will be placed in a square which you should be able to solve, and other squares on the grid may be highlighted. You should look at the highlighted squares to work out what value to put in the square with the caret.
Square analyser: for the square under the mouse pointer, its possible values will be displayed below the grid. This feature may be turned on and off as desired.
Notepad: you may open a separate window in which to jot down possible values for empty squares. More details on the notepad
SuperDoku can solve puzzles for you. If you ask it to solve a puzzle which cannot be solved, i.e. one which has more than one solution, or one which has values entered which lead to no possible solution, it will alert you to this problem. You can choose a variety of different rules for SuperDoku to use when solving puzzles from the Solver window.
You may wish to print out puzzles for use away from the computer: to do this SuperDoku provides the facility to create Draw files of the puzzles. You can drop the file straight onto your printer driver from SuperDoku's Draw export window to print it out, or load it into Draw or another application in order to put more than one puzzle on a page. If you are really keen you can create whole books of puzzles by loading the Draw files into your favourite wordprocessor. Puzzles may be exported with or without their solutions.
