Comparison puzzles

Comparison puzzles obey the normal Sudoku restraints. In addition, arrows are drawn between neighbouring squares in a block to indicate which square will contain the smaller value.

Most puzzles will be created with a blank grid; easy 9×9 puzzles will usually have a few values filled in for you.

The 4×4 grid below is an example of a partly-solved comparison puzzle.

The numbers 1-4 have been placed in the bottom left block to show how the arrows indicate relative values.

In the top right block we can easily see that the top right square must contain a value larger than all the others in the block, i.e. 4. The bottom left square in that block must similarly contain a value smaller than all the others, i.e. 1. Which way round the 2 and 3 are to be placed must be determinged later by other means.

You can also look along rows or columns to determine values from the comparisons. For example, in the right-hand column all the squares apart from the top one have a value which is smaller than one other, so the top square must contain 4.

Creating puzzles

As an alternative to having SuperDoku generate a new comparison puzzle for you, you can start from a blank grid and create a comparison puzzle yourself or type one in from another source. Ensure that "Comparison" is ticked in the puzzle creation window before you click on "Blank grid".

You will be presented with a blank grid with arrows which all point down or right. (This grid has no possible solution.) To create your own puzzle, click on the arrows to change the direction they point.

When you have finished defining the comparisons, click the puzzle design editor tool to leave design mode. You may then proceed to solve the puzzle, save it for the future, or to export it as a Draw file. However, if the puzzle does not have a unique solution, SuperDoku will give you the option to continue editing the design.

Note that it is possible to save or create Draw files of unsolveable comparison puzzles while you are in design mode. When you load in a blank puzzle which has no unique solution you will be given the option of returning to design mode in order to finish setting up the comparisons correctly. It is also possible to reenter design mode at any time while attempting to solve a puzzle, if you wish to adjust the puzzle's definition.
