Select Layer > New > Layer. |

Enter a layer name, and click OK. |

Select the Rectangular Marquee tool .
You may want to use a different selection tool depending on the shape of the area you want to fill with a gradient.

Select the area you want to fill with a gradient. |

Select the Gradient tool . |

In the options bar, click the desired gradient type (linear, radial, angular, reflected, or diamond). |

Choose a gradient fill from the Gradient Picker pop-up palette. |

If the gradient fill you selected uses foreground and/or background color, choose Window > Show Swatches to display the Swatches palette, and select a color for the fill. |

Position the pointer in the image where you want to set the starting point of the gradient, and drag to define the ending point. |

In the Layers palette, enter a value in the Opacity text box, or drag the Opacity pop-up slider to change the Opacity of the Gradient layer. |
