Day 245 - 07 May 96 - Page 64
take steps to stop these lies"?
A. Yes.

Q. The final blob on that page, "It is not about freedom of
speech; it is about the right to stop people telling lies"?
A. Yes.

Q. If we look at the last page, that is the third page of that
document, it says here specifically, the first blob, "This
case is about stopping the further publication of lies",
that is this case against myself and Ms. Steel?
A. Um Hm.

Q. You say the same thing again in the next blob, the last
line,. Two more blobs down you wanted to establish
precisely who was responsible for distributing the lies in
the leaflet. That is basically a reference to the word
"lies". Would you accept that it is a pretty strong
attack on the character of the people who are being sued in
this case?
A. I would accept that you are attacking your documents
talking about me are equally prominent with the words
"lies" and express the same sentiment.

Q. OK. If we look at the London Greenpeace fact sheet. I do
not know if you have a copy. Did you have an original copy
of the London Greenpeace fact sheet. It should be lying
around on the table somewhere. I am not sure if it is an
open out one you have got, not the Veggies one.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, the ----

MR. MORRIS: Thank you. Does it contain anywhere in that
document the word "lies"?
A. I do not know what I was referring to are your press
releases starting in January 1994, the commencement of the
case where the words "lies" is repeatedly used.

Q. Is there any word "lies" in this leaflet in the London
Greenpeace fact sheet the subject of the libel action?
A. Do you want me to read the whole thing now?

Q. Unless Mr. Rampton objects, the word "lies" does not come
into it once.

The next question I would like to ask on that subject is,
seeing as you authorised this press release attacking the
credibility of myself and Ms. Steel for distributing lies,
i.e. the London Greenpeace fact sheet, can you name what in
that fact sheet we knew to be a lie if indeed we did?
A. I think you believe the whole thing. I think you
believe everything in here was true. You knew it to be
untrue and you went ahead and talked about it anyhow.

Q. Which bit did I know to be untrue?
A. I believe you knew the rainforest story is untrue.
I believe that you know the only ownership of land is
untrue. I believe you know that we do not exploit
children, or we are not responsible for murder or Mctorture
or McRip-off. I think the whole thing is, if I read your
