Day 032 - 06 Oct 94 - Page 20

had a considerably higher proportion saying that they
would take take-away meals at least once a week compared
with those in older age groups, particularly 35 to 54, or
       45 plus and pensioners.

MR. MORRIS: On that subject, what is the implication for
younger people eating fast food more often?
       A. Again our concern, as I say, at the time was: What is
the impact of fast food diets and on whom is it
impacting? From the British -- the Dietary Survey of
British Schoolchildren, it would look as if younger
people, that is to say, older school children and people
in social class 5, were most likely to bear the impact,
and this, if you like, confirmed that view that it was,
indeed, younger people rather than older that were
       consuming take away foods.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Would that include a prewrapped sandwich?
       A. It probably would.

  Q. For instance, to get the breadth of what take away
       involves?
       A. It probably would, although I note underneath table 17
that the most popular foods quoted were fish and chips
followed by Chinese followed by hamburgers. So if
sandwiches are there, they are not a very large portion in
       popularity.

MR. MORRIS: Are there other sections of this that you want to
refer us to? Obviously, these are really small parts of a
       wider jigsaw.
       A. I am just seeing if I can find anything to do with
younger age groups through this particular survey. There
is table 19 on page 20 of this document.

  Q. This is not about take-aways, is it?
       A. No. It is a way of sampling what people typically eat
by asking them what they had yesterday.

  Q. On that table, for example, the younger people tend to eat
        ----?
       A. Chips comes up fairly frequently.

  Q. 46 per cent for chips the day before of children aged 11
       to 15.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That does not help as to what is take-away,
       does it?
       A. No, they could have had chips at their school dinner
or even at home. This asks overall.

MR. MORRIS: So this is a general indication of the type of
food that people are eating in this country as a whole?
       A. Yes, I would imagine that was the purpose of doing
       these surveys.

  Q. Is there anything else about that table 19 you want to
draw our attention to or any other tables?
       A. Tables 29 and 30 might bear some examination.
