Day 073 - 13 Jan 95 - Page 30

  Q. From, yes.
       A. Yes. They are the same. It comes from a different
train of thought because the situation in Scotland is
different; the problems in Scotland are different to the
ones in England. But I would maintain, and I still
maintain, that paper from both of those sources has an
adverse effect on the environment but for different reasons
       in the two kingdoms.

  Q. Are you saying that one sheet of paper has an adverse
effect, or are you saying a significant use of paper has an
       adverse effect?
       A. One sheet of paper will have some microscopic
immeasurable effect on the environment, but sheets of paper
mount up. Eventually the use of paper, of which McDonald's
are a part, is damaging to the environment.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is that a convenient moment to break off?
Let us break off there until two o'clock.

                      (Luncheon Adjournment).

MR. MORRIS: I am just working through the statement noting the
references really, the important references. On page 30
you have quoted the International Union for Conservation of
Nature in 8.5.2 in the statement on endangered species in
Sweden. One of your references which is No. 10 is a letter
to you Karin Lindahl. Do you want to say who that is?
       A. Karin Lindahl. Karin Lindahl is a board member of the
Swedish Society for Nature Conservation. She is also the
co-ordinator. She has been seconded to the TIAGA Rescue
network which is an environmental organisation --
       T-I-A-G-A.

  Q. That is a network that you are part of?
       A. I am part of that network.

  Q. I do not know if you have a copy of that letter there?
       A. I am just looking to see if I have a copy of Karin's
       letter -- I have, yes.

  Q. Have you highlighted certain pieces?
       A. I have highlighted certain bits, yes.

  Q. Do you want to just mention anything of particular
       interest?
       A. I think the most important thing or one of the
important things is I asked Karin for some details of what
had happened before 1990 because, apparently, I understand
this is a critical date, and that is was not so easily
available to me in this country, so she replied.
Basically, she is sending me information about a survey
done on biodiversity and species lost in Finland.

  Q. Can you speak a little bit more slowly and clearly?
       A. Right, she is talking about species lost due to
forestry in Finland -- sorry, not Finland, in Sweden,
       excuse me.

  Q. Can I hand this to the Judge? It is my copy. (Same
