Day 155 - 14 Jul 95 - Page 28
jobs. I think that the management really hated me." Do
you remember, as Manager, ever hating any member of your
staff, your crew?
A. No.

Q. Do you remember ever ensuring that any member of your crew
was given all the worst jobs?
A. No. It could not always be done anyway even if you
wanted to.

Q. Do you ever remember feeling that you wanted to?
A. Sometimes you feel like that.

Q. He goes on, does Mr. Magee: "I did not exactly go out of
my way to please them" -- I think that must be management
-- "I answered back continuously. I was impolite whilst
on the till. I refused to smile continuously at customers
when told to do so". Pausing there, two things: First, is
there a policy of telling people to smile continuously at
customers?
A. No, one of the requirements at the job interview stage
that I tried to enforce was to try and recruit and employ
people that had the personality to go on the till and serve
customers.

Q. There are also other people, are there not, besides the
till people in what used to be called the lobby in the
dining area?
A. That is correct.

Q. They would be cleaning up or distributing mats or
something, would they?
A. Well, that is secondary. The main thing is keeping
contact with the customer.

Q. Is that the sort of job that Mrs. Farrer does now?
A. That is correct.

Q. Is that the sort of job she did when you were there?
A. That is correct.

Q. The second question I want to ask you about that passage
which I have just read, "I answered back continuously. I
was impolite whilst on the till. I refused to smile
continuously at customers when told to do so". Assuming
for a moment that Mr. Magee is telling the truth about
that, how does it strike you that those sorts of attitudes
qualify him to be a successful crew member of McDonald's?
A. They do not.

Q. If that had been observed, for example, on an OCL, that
kind of behaviour, being rude to customers at the till, do
you think such a person would ever be likely to qualify for
a pay rise?
A. No. He would be given quite a few observation check
lists by different Managers to get a consensus of opinion.

Q. Because the Managers, we have understood, discuss the
performance reviews before any pay rise is granted?
A. Yes, once a week I would have a Managers' meeting where
