Day 251 - 17 May 96 - Page 23
would be coming out of the dense forest.

MS. STEEL: Your Honour, it is just that it did not come out on
the transcript and we did not catch what she said either.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is just Mr. Morris had her going into it
there from the road in the other direction.

MR. MORRIS: To Jucara. Okay, so the areas that Mr. Rampton
identified as being current suppliers of McDonald's beef
through Mr. Morganti of Braslo included Crixas on the
eastern side of the Araguaia River, on the tributaries Novo
Mundo, Samma Delta(?), Araguaia, would that be within that
area you have described as originally humid dense humid
tropical forest?
A. Yes.

Q. What about the BR153, would that be within what would have
been previously dense humid tropical forest or would that
be the eastern-most kind of, like, extent of it, or what?
A. I am not sure, I cannot actually remember travelling.
I can remember travelling from Goiania to Cuiaba quite
well, and I can remember travelling up the Araguaia River.
I must have actually travelled, come to think of it, I must
have travelled from Goiania up to Maraba, up that road.
Yes, I remember. I certainly remember looking at it, yes,
going up Parai to Cantesmara(?), say. I certainly remember
what is now to canteens which, when I was going there
first, was still Goias. I still remember that as being
tropical forest. I cannot quite remember how cleared it
was further down in the south. Porangatu, I remember going
to Porangatu.

Q. So as far as Mara Rosa and Porangatu are concerned, those
particular places you do not recall very well?
A. I can remember Grupi, which is further north. I can
remember staying in Grupi.

Q. Porangatu, can you remember what vegetation that was?
A. All this region was areas of, around Porangatu
certainly was an area of tropical forest with some savannah
but a lot of tropical forest there. But I cannot quite
remember the area from Goiania up to there. I cannot
remember now how cleared that was, but I certainly remember
going on from Porangatu north.

Q. So Porangatu would have been tropical humid forest?
A. Yes.

Q. Was that the case and what time was it cleared as far as
you can recall?
A. Which area are you talking about?

Q. Porangatu?
A. Well, I went up that road again when the road was first
being opened up.

Q. You have to face us, please?
A. Sorry, yes.
