Day 016 - 22 Jul 94 - Page 68

     1 floss at a fair?
              A. Yes.
     2
         Q. What would you think of that yourself?
3 A. Well, in my perception, that would be junk food.

4 Q. Because you would not want to have it yourself?
              A. It would not be of any interest to me. It would be
5 one of the last things I would touch.

6 MR. MORRIS: That is because it is basically sugar, just sugar?
              A. It is partly because it is sugar; it is sticky; it is
7 nasty; you get it all over your face. I would not really
want to touch it at all.
     8
         Q. But if something is 90 per cent sugar or mostly sugar,
9 would you characterise that as junk food?
              A. No, I would not.
    10
         Q. It depends on whether it is all fluffed up and gets on
    11 your face?
              A. Yes, and it probably depends on the circumstances.
12 There are occasions when I am happy to nibble a little bit
of sugar and raise my blood glucose.
    13
         Q. Is there any other examples of junk food you would not
    14 eat?
              A. Semolina.
    15
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where are we going now?
    16
MR. MORRIS: This could be quite important, but because it is
17 at the end of a long day we want to rush through.

18 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Tell me where you are going on it.

19 MR. MORRIS: Did you say semolina?
              A. Yes, the reason is I do not like the stuff.
    20
MS. STEEL: If you do not like it, it is a junk food?
21 A. Yes. This is what I am trying to say to you. It
depends on the individual. If somebody gave it to me,
22 I would not touch it.

23 Q. So the definition of "junk food" is not based on its
              nutritional value?
24 A. It might or it might not be. The overriding
consideration is that it is something I would not like.
25 It might be for nutritional reasons; it might be for taste
reasons, whatever. It is a personal -- it is my own
26 individual perception that is important.

27 MR. MORRIS: So if people said McDonald's food is junk food?
              A. It is not junk food in my book.
    28
         Q. No, but it is a personal preference?
    29 A. Yes, obviously.

30 MR. JUSTICE BELL: To put it another way, it is not a personal
preference. It just exhibits what their view is of the
