Day 093 - 28 Feb 95 - Page 28

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, he has to finish his answer.

MR. MORRIS: I wanted to clarify what he means by "lying".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let him finish. Ask another question now
because there has been the interruption.

MR. MORRIS: I am sorry for that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, it is very easy to come in before an
       answer is finished.

MR. MORRIS: It was a bit of an extreme statement.
(To the witness): So when have they lied, the Humane
       Society of the United States?
       A. When they publish things that are not true, they lie.

  Q. Have you any example of something they have published that
       is not true?
       A. I have seen -- not with me, I have not -- I do not keep
       those examples in my desk.

  Q. This article, by the way, that was being looked at before
was published in the Humane Society of the US magazine, as
far as we know, and no doubt Clare Druce will enlighten us
       all.

MR. RAMPTON: While we are on that, I notice that it is
incomplete, so if Ms. Druce is going to produce this and
seek to rely on it, I should like to have the whole of it.
The same is true of the other article from the Atlanta
       Journal which is also incomplete.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. If you can get the whole of the
article; obviously, from where the photocopied parts finish
there is more to come, so if you can get the complete
       articles it would be helpful.

MS. STEEL: How are chickens gathered for slaughter?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We are in the US now?

  MS. STEEL: In the USA.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We are talking about broilers?
       A. Usually, they go at night or very, very early in the
morning when it is still dark.

MS. STEEL: Before we go any further, can you talk about
       McDonald's suppliers?
       A. Yes, OK. Then they are hand-picked and they are placed
in a cage and then they are loaded in a truck.

  Q. Hold on. How are they hand-picked?
       A. By the shackles. Can you be more specific. By hand.

  Q. Yes, but how are the chickens picked up? Are they picked
up by the body or the neck?
       A. No, they go after the shackles, that is what it is.
