MR. MORRIS: You have travelled in Brazil?
A. Yes.

Q. The Amazon frontier according to the key is that red line
at the southern end of the Amazon, yes?
A. That is correct.

Q. Around the Amazon?
A. That is correct.

Q. --- area.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Could someone tell me what the top left to
the bottom right hatching is on the key?

MR. MORRIS: Sparse forest.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I can see it is rainforest on the top.

MR. MORRIS: My Lord, Mr. Morris is not right. Rainforest then
dense forest.

MR. MORRIS: Then sparse forest. So, originally the Amazon
rainforest would have reached to the frontier?
A. I am not sure.

Q. The Amazon flood basin that would reach the frontier, yes?
A. Originally I answered the question.

Q. The Amazon rainforest would have been defined by the area
within that red line originally?
A. OK. Yes, what it means is that when we went into
Brazil we met with the agricultural and forestry people and
defined by several organisations, defined what is the
Amazon and what it means. We draw a map of what it is and
that is what it means.

Q. So originally, I know the Amazon now has not been ----

MR. RAMPTON: I think Mr. Morris has to say what he means by
"originally" -- 1600, 1900 1985?

MR. MORRIS: But the frontier of the Amazon rainforest, when
would that have been ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Hold on because you have introduced the
rainforest. What the key says is "Amazon frontier".
Whether that means rainforest at one time or not I do not
know.

MR. MORRIS: Where are the areas that have been deforested, say,
in the last 50 years? You accept that a lot of the Amazon
has been deforested in the last 50 years?
A. Yes.

Q. McDonald's accept that. We have letters on that. Where in
that map in the shaded area, in the southern part of the
shaded area, has most of the deforestation taken place?
A. That one I do not know.
