Day 017 - 25 Jul 94 - Page 61
1 groups: Cereal foods", and it gives examples. "Meat and
alternatives (eggs, fish, beans, nuts)", those are the
2 alternatives. "Dairy foods (cheese, milk, skimmed milk,
yoghurt). Vegetables and fruit together with smaller
3 amounts from: Oil and Fats, sweets, chocolates, soft and
alcoholic drinks can be added too, but they are not
4 essential.
5 Moderation. The second golden rule is don't eat too much
of any one thing. Nutritionists advise that we should in
6 particular keep an eye how much fat, sugar and salt we
eat. You should also watch your weight. If it's
7 increasing, you're probably eating more and exercising
less than you should be.
8
Where does McDonald's fit in? Of course, we're not
9 claiming that McDonald's provides every single nutrient
you need for a healthy diet", and so on and so forth.
10 Then towards the bottom of the page: "Naturally, to
maintain a balanced diet you should eat plenty of cereals,
11 fresh vegetables and fruit.
12 Burt McDonald's menu contains ingredients from all the
food groups."
13
Dr. Arnott, looking at that with the eye of somebody who
14 is concerned -- I think the word I used or put into your
mouth was "enthusiastic" -- to see that people do not get
15 cancers, so far as possible, of the breast or the bowel or
it might be the prostrate, the uterus, pancreas and the
16 ovary, how do you rate that as advice to the customer?
A. This is very good general advice to people.
17
Q. That was in 1985. If you go back to tab 2 which is the
18 document I first mentioned and turn to -- you see there is
a stamped number at the bottom of the pages -- page 14.
19 This time I am not going to read it out. I would just
like you to read that page to yourself and then a couple
20 of other pages. One is headed Nutrition and the other
part of this page is How much should we eat? Tell me when
21 you have done that.
A. How far do you want me to read? Sorry.
22
Q. You should have just read page 14?
23 A. Right.
24 Q. Have you read that page?
A. Yes.
25
Q. Then please turn on three pages and read pages 17 and 18.
26 It is headed: "What is a healthy diet?"
A. Yes.
27
Q. Have you read both those pages. 18 as well?
28 A. 18 as well.
29 Q. "Exercise and good health". If you tell me exercise has
nothing do with the problems you face, then do not bother
30 to read them -- I do not mean personally, I mean as a
doctor.
