Day 151 - 10 Jul 95 - Page 39

I think it is scandalous to suggest that they are
brainwashed into doing it. They are competent, individual
people who might just want to stay at a job because they
like it and they think it is very good.

MR. MORRIS: Might that be a good time to break for lunch?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. We will resume at two o'clock.

                       (Luncheon Adjournment)

MS. STEEL: You said you remember Mr. Alimi. Do you remember
when he was promoted to the training squad?
       A. No. My recollection is I think he was already training
       squad when I got there.

  Q. When you got there?
       A. Yes. I can only remember him as a training squad,
       certainly.

  Q. Right. Do crew have to be particularly good to get on the
       training squad?
       A. Proficient in those job aspects, yes. That is a
prerequisite, I would say, to becoming a training squad.

  Q. They have to be someone who you can trust who is fairly
responsible and who knows what they are doing?
       A. Certainly in terms of them being responsible for
training new crew, then we would need them to be proficient
       in those areas, yes.

  Q. You would not expect someone to train crew who was not
carrying out the procedures the correct way themselves?
       A. No.

  Q. Is there a minimum period of time that crew have to have
been crew before they can become training squad?
       A. Not to my knowledge. I think it is really down to the
individual concerned and their performance level.

  Q. Is there a particular performance level that they have to
reach before they can become training squad?
       A. In terms of the performance review?

  Q. Yes?
       A. Not that I am aware of.

  Q. Would you promote them to training squad if they were rated
       "needs improvement"?
       A. As a restaurant manager, no, I would not have thought
that I would have done that.

  Q. Would the Company? I am talking about in general here?
       A. Right. I do not think it would have been in anyone's
interests of "needs improvement", it depends. Do you mean
the overall PR rating would need improving?

  Q. Yes.
       A. I would have been surprised if they had been promoted
just after getting a review such as that.
