Day 290 - 30 Oct 96 - Page 26

  MS. STEEL: The evidence is-----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It may be slightly more than twice a year,
over a period of years. Or was there some evidence as to
what happened? You know, I don't mean to be facetious, but
they go, for want of a better way of describing it, on
holiday for something like three or four weeks.

MS. STEEL: I don't think they get that luxury.

MR JUSTICE BELL: There was no evidence of that was there?

MS. STEEL: The evidence of Mr. Bowes was that the sows would
be taken to the boar about three days after weaning, and he
did actually say that it was slightly more than twice a
       year that they would be-----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I know he said they came on heat.

  MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You understood him to say that they went
       back to the boar?

MS. STEEL: Definitely. Definitely. I mean, I read it
yesterday, last night. I remember it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am not doubting it, I am just asking for
       assistance.

MS. STEEL: I am trying to see whether I made a note of where
       it was.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not worry. Since there was no mention of
any sort of lay period, that I recall, I would assume that
is what happened, even if it was not said. But you think
       it was specifically said?

  MS. STEEL: Yes.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Very well.

MS. STEEL: Yes, it was actually. I have found the reference
to it. Day 88, page 69, line 38. Question, "How long
after the piglets are taken away from the sow would the sow
be mated again?" He said, "Three days, three days after."

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: In fact, there is another reference on page 70,
because there was a bit of discussion about whether it was
twice or three times a year. I again asked, "At any rate
on your farm they would be mated three days after the
weaning?" He said, "They would be put with the boar three
days afterwards." Question, "It is very likely that on the
fourth or fifth day?" Answer, "Yes." So, basically, it
       was three to five days.

Just going back to the dry sow stall, Mr. Bowes actually
