Day 030 - 03 Oct 94 - Page 53

Then on the facing page, 193, there is a short list of
just a few reports, conclusions of reports, including the
one on the left and also including American Cancer Society
in 1985. So that is quite a convenient resource.

The ACS recommendations in 1985, for example, say: "To
reduce risk of cancer or specified cancers, cut down total
fat intake, eat more high fibre foods, include foods rich
in vitamins A and C, include ... (reading to the
words) ... nitrite cured foods moderate". Those are
really, essentially, the same recommendations that were
made in 1982 by the National Academy of Sciences.

MR. MORRIS: Right. If we move on to the next document which
is the World Health Organisation Report which has been
looked at. This was referred to behind Dr. Arnott's
statement, I believe. In terms of the section that we
have already looked at in court, and you have provided us
with some further sections which have been served.
       A. Which report are you referring to now?

  Q. This is the Diet, Nutrition and Prevention of Chronic
       Diseases 1990.

MS. STEEL: The section that we have served, I think, this
morning goes in the middle of the sections that are behind
       Dr. Arnott's statement.

MR. MORRIS: Do you want to take us through the extracts you
want to draw the court's attention to ---
       A. Yes. I think.

  Q. -- from these papers?
       A. Yes. I think, without wishing to be invidious, I
would suggest that this is a report which is really
particularly central to this case, not because I am
suggesting that the scientists responsible for compiling
this report were of a higher quality than scientists who
compiled other reports, but, rather, because of when the
report was compiled and published (which was between 1989
and 1990) and also because it is a report whose dietary
guidelines are for the whole world, referring to pages
that are not submitted to the court but just as a matter
of information, the Chairman of the Committee who produced
this report happens to be British -- he is a professor
Phillip James who is a director of the Rowett Research
Institute in Aberdeen -- but also there are people serving
on the committee, for example, from India, from Italy,
from China, Canada, Australia, Africa and elsewhere.

I think again, going back to the point I was making before
-- I trust you have page 66 marked out? This is:
Summary and Conclusions, Major Associations between Diet
and Cancer. Do you have that?

  Q. That is in the Arnott -- yes, page 66 is from the
       Arnott -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you just pause a moment? Can you remind
me which volume and tab we put that in?
