Day 238 - 22 Apr 96 - Page 09

MR. MORRIS: That is correct. That is excellent. The only
other document we will refer to is the one which we have
just served this morning. Miss Watson will explain
       original Indian areas.

MR. MORRIS: Do you have a copy of that one?
       A. No. It does not matter though.

  Q. If you just take the original of that map, (Same handed) I
       think we are all ready.

Just before we go into the statements, I will ask you a few
questions about yourself, Miss Watson. What is your
       academic background?
       A. I am have an MA in Hispanic Languages and Literature,
which I included some anthropology options, and within that
I spent a year in Peru living with an indigenous community
       in the Andes.

  Q. Have you spent much time in South America?
       A. I have. I spent that year in Peru that I have just
referred to. I spent one and a half years living in the
Amazon in Brazil working for an environmental project with
the Royal Geographical Society and the Institute of Amazon
Research in Mannous. My parents lived in Venezuela for 5
years and I frequently went out to Venezuela, so I have had
experience of, let us say, Peru, Brazil and Venezuela, and
in my current job I have travelled to Venezuela, Brazil and
       Guyana.

  Q. We are going to come on to your current job, but let me
just ask you about it. Would you say who Survival
International are and what their status is?
       A. Survival International is a world-wide movement to
support indigenous or tribal people around the world. We
are a Human Rights organisation doing advocacy work logging
and campaigning for the rights of indigenous people. We
have consultative status at the United Nations and at the
       European Parliament.

  Q. Is there any comparable group on an international scale?
       A. Not on an international scale. There are other groups
who work within specific countries and sometimes with
specific peoples but, as far as I know, Survival is the
only worldwide organisation. We have offices in other
European countries. At any one time we are probably
working on cases in over 60 countries.

  Q. I am going to read through your statements. If there are
any things that are incorrect or need clarification, if you
will stop me at the end of the paragraph and say.

This is the statement on 9th February, 1996:

"Statement on the impact of cattle ranching on indigenous
       peoples in Brazil.

I am Campaigns Co-ordinator for Survival International, a
worldwide organisation which defend the rights of
indigenous peoples. I have special responsibility for
