Day 258 - 07 Jun 96 - Page 22
that. This is "Growing Up Together" and the introduction
bit is "McDonald's involvement with schools in the past has
been primarily through our local restaurants. However, our
support for education took a major step forward in 1993
with the creation of McDonald's education service". Then
in the second column, the kind of last paragraph before it
splits in two, "The McDonald's education service provided a
greater focus to our educational support. We view every
young person not only as a customer but as a possible
employee, manager, supplier or business leader in
tomorrow's Britain. With our popularity and our
geographical spread, we believe we are in a strong position
to provide strong support to schools and teachers all over
the country".

Then it talks about links between schools and businesses,
and this was at Berkeley Infants School in Scunthorpe. It
talks about a project in June 1993. In the second sub
column it says -- and this is relevant, this is about
children aged 4 to 7: "The school then based its autumn
term work on McDonald's. This included maths, history,
music, dance and language classes. 3, McDonald's
restaurants were set up and children as young as four
started to develop an understanding of business". Is this
area under part of the umbrella of Mary Curran?
A. That, no, it comes under the broad umbrella of the
communications or public relations department and my
understanding is that a gentleman called James Graham is
the person who runs that area in the public relations area.

Q. OK. Just a few bits and pieces that I wanted to finish
off. We have finished with that if you want to put it
away.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You have finished with the Manual?

MS. STEEL: Yes. Can I ask a general question about sales
promotions? Would it be fair to say--

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a moment. How much longer do you
think you are going to continue with the
cross-examination?

MS. STEEL: I am not really sure. I have got -- if you mean
should we have a break, then probably, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will carry on.

MS. STEEL: OK. Would it be fair to say that there is some kind
of sales promotion on more or less the whole time of one
kind or another?
A. That is certainly the case now. Maybe five years ago
that was not the case, but it has certainly become that
way, yes.

Q. Five years ago there would still have been quite regular
sales promotions, just not all the time?
A. They would have been quite regular, yes, but it has
become more regular over the last five years.
