Day 134 - 13 Jun 95 - Page 12

MR. MORRIS: -- during that year?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: As I understand it, when we are looking at
these figures, they are not the same at all from year to
year. For instance, 1989 was nearly 300, internal, and a
figure which I cannot read but must be less than 400,
external, which is clearly more than half internal. Then,
as Mr. Morris has pointed out, in 1990 the ones hired as
management were less than half internal, less than half
internal 92, considerably more than half internal 1992.
But, as I understand it, these are numbers hired ---
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- during the year; is that not right?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Put it so Ms. Mead can understand.

MR. MORRIS: All the internal -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Listen for a moment. If you disagree with
that, put your question to her and then put to her and show
her the document which you say is inconsistent with it, if
you do say it is inconsistent.

MR. MORRIS: Just all the internal, external hires at the end of
each year, the internal hires are substantially less than
       the external hires.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: Is that not correct? For every year that we have
information in front of us, except actually for March 31st
1995 which is the very last, that is only one quarter?
       A. Where is that?

  Q. Sorry, that is actually sheet F but we can come to that
       later.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is why I asked you to put it, you see,
because I am still in a twirl.

MR. MORRIS: Sorry. (To the witness): Certainly in terms of
between 1989 and 1993, up to September 30th, each year
summarised is less hires from internal sources than from
external sources. That is a fact, is it not, if these
       figures can be believed?
       A. Yes, that is what these figures show.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Point to the document which you suggest is
inconsistent with that, if there is one.

MR. MORRIS: That is what we just heard before about what
percentage of management grades come from crew.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: But I think you should put it so we can see
whether it is hiring or people in post.

MR. MORRIS: It is document B, apparently. It says: "All
