Day 037 - 14 Oct 94 - Page 52
talking about) that "it is a Big Mac with four patties".

All right, so we have some nutritional information for a
Big Mac. What we have do is to add back, if we want to
calculate what kind of nutritional value this is, what we
have to do is add back the value for two patties. The
information that I have from McDonald's, at least from
their literature, does not specify exactly what the
nutritional content of a patty is, but we do know that the
difference between a cheeseburger and a Big Mac is one
patty.

So, I actually calculated what the nutritional value of
one patty is, doubled that to add in two patties, and
added that to the nutritional value as already disclosed
of a the Big Mac, and I came up with these figures, that
this entire meal, including the large fries but not
including the soft drink, in fact, constitutes nearly 1400
calories.

Q. Have actually got -- you gave this to us recently -- your
calculations -- I can give this to the Plaintiffs.
A. I have two further copies.

Q. This is your calculation on the nutritional content of
this ---
A. That is right.

Q. -- "mega Mac" which is their latest promotion, it seems.
(Handed).
A. Now, is this a healthy meal? Is this really as
nutritious as McDonald's would say their products are? It
contains, you can see from my calculations, 1391
calories. Well, when you add in the soft drink (which I
have not done) it is going to take it over 1400 calories.
Further, fats is an impressive 82.6 grammes of which
saturated fat would constitute approximately 30 grammes.
Expressed in terms of percentages, the calories derived as
total fat are 52 per cent of that meal and saturated fats
19 per cent.

I would point out also, in conclusion, there is a huge
calorie dose there, 1400 calories. It is getting pretty
close to the average requirement of certain population
groups, 2,000 calories or so. This is not a healthy
food. It is an unhealthy food and to pretend otherwise is
dishonest.

Q. Maybe we can move on from that; are there any other
pictures or are they just sort of scene setters or what?
A. Picture No. 3, I would just point out to stress the
positioning of this poster, it is something that is a
central poster. It hits you as soon as you walk into the
store. I think there is probably some central directive,
there usually is, from organisations describing precisely
where posters like this should be displayed. It is a
two-sided poster. On one side, the side facing outwards
into the street, the picture that you see is shown in
photograph No. 4 which starts: "Extra value meals". On
the other side within the store itself, you can see the
