Day 118 - 01 May 95 - Page 58

  Q. We note at the top it says "Clive Williams store manager",
is that correct, "attending his disciplinary hearing"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. "Newcastle Granger Street"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Under "Labour control" Mr. Clive Williams was given an
objective "£875 above crew labour guidelines achieved only
in May, failed in both June and July". If we look over the
page the objective for the next review at the top, point 2
       says "Labour control"?
       A. Sorry, where are we? Which page are you on now.

  Q. Page 1741 two pages later?
       A. Yes.

  Q. The objective to the next review?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Point 2 labour control "Within targeted labour guidelines
attached to goals on a monthly basis"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So effectively in a disciplinary hearing, is it not, he was
being told that on a monthly basis he had to get labour
costs within targeted labour guidelines; is that correct?
       A. I know nothing about this case and I do not -- yes, I
do not know anything about it but obviously he was. It
       says there.

  Q. Does that surprise you? Was he being unfairly treated?
       A. No, I take it that his labour percentage was above that
approved on his budget, and he is being told to try and
bring it into control. I take it that that is what it
means. I think that is reasonable.

  Q. While we are on that page, to save time, we might note that
point 4 says that one of his objectives to reach was that
crew turnover be below 140 per cent. Would you know why a
manager should keep crew turnover below 140 per cent?
       A. No.

  Q. Is above 140 per cent unacceptable to McDonald's?
       A. I do not think so.

  Q. So why would this manager be disciplined for -----
       A. I do not know. I have nothing at all to do with this.

  Q. OK, I am asking you. If we turn over and have a look at
page 1743 Mr. Williams was told under point 5C: "Your
failure to achieve the goals set on 15th May 1991..." and
I believe that was earlier objectives anyway. It seems to
be a process of setting goals?
       A. Yes.
