Day 127 - 23 May 95 - Page 34

       A. Yes, I did.

  Q. -- containing what you knew of the facts and
recommendations, et cetera, for the future?
       A. Yes.

  Q. We will look at that just a bit later on. The question
I wanted to ask you was this: casting your mind back to
that time, and excluding from it anything you may have
heard recently, what was your understanding of how the
       death had occurred?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is there any reason to suppose that it is any
different to what -- there seems to be a lot of common
       ground about it.

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes, there is.

(To the witness) Perhaps I can shorten it -- I will not
say short-circuit it -- cut it short, Mrs. Barnes. Did you
read Mr. Shirkie's, the EHO, report into the incident?
       A. Yes, I did.

  Q. Is there anything, so far as the facts of the incident are
concerned, that you would disagree with, so far as you know
       them?
       A. No.

MR. RAMPTON: Thank you very much. I am grateful to
       your Lordship.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us just take stock a moment. How long is
it going to take you, do you think, to take Mrs. Barnes
through the rest of her evidence in relation to
       Mark Hopkins' death?

MR. RAMPTON: Half an hour, I would say -- I am doing the best
I can -- because I do want her to look at and explain
explain some of the things in the report that she made,
which I think would help Mr. Morris as well.

MR. MORRIS: If I am able to make a phone call I may be able to
stay an extra half an hour.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you think you may be able to stay into the
afternoon, or do you mean you may be able to stay for more
       another half hour or so?

MR. MORRIS: Another half an hour really.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Take the opportunity to do that. Is there a
       phone immediately outside?

  MR. MORRIS: Yes, there is.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will break off for a couple of minutes
while we do that. If Mr. Morris can stay for another half
an hour or so, my suggestion is that we run on and have a
       break rather later than normal.
