1 to reduce it and for them to be aware that I am concerned
with their emissions.
2
Q. Are these specifications -- are they specifications?
3 A. No, it is an overall guideline.
4 Q. Are they written down?
A. They certainly are written down, framed in our office,
5 in our lobby, sent to each and every supplier.
6 Q. You have said all the main ones that you can think of,
environmental considerations?
7 A. We may have submitted our environmental policy. I am
not sure, but yes, that is what comes to mind.
8
Q. So you do not have any policy?
9 A. As a matter of fact, if you do turn to --
Mr. Langert's testimony revolves around the EDF,
10 McDonald's joint project. Within that document is
McDonald's environmental policy statement and
11 environmental packaging guidelines.
12 Q. What about old growth forest or, in fact, natural
forests? You do not know of any specification against
13 using natural forests?
A. Using natural forests -- what is a natural forest
14 versus where we may get paper? I am not sure of the
difference.
15
Q. Are they different types of forest in that respect? Are
16 you aware there are different types of forests in terms of
management use?
17 A. I am certainly aware of the old growth forest issues
in our country in Oregon and in Washington State, and one
18 of the things when we did this poll I with pleasure
noticed that we do not have any virgin paper mills that we
19 draw from in Oregon or in Washington State, so I have not
really concerned myself with that.
20
Q. So those are the only states that you made that enquiry?
21 A. No, I did not make any enquiry by state at all.
I sent out an enquiry to my converters to tell me where
22 they get their raw materials to make our packaging
products and they reported back to me. Simply reading I
23 can tell which states are or are not on the list.
24 Q. You do not have any specification making a preference for
or against natural forests and plantation forests, for
25 example?
A. Well, we are involved right now in a task force called
26 the paper task force in which we are participating with
five other companies in our country and in the
27 environmental defence fund, because I do not know the
environmental impacts of forestry -- I am not a forestry
28 expert -- and, hopefully, they are going to be able to
help us to decide what type of forestry practices are best
29 to be used, and at that point then, the expert knowledge
will be available to me, but at this point it has not.
30
Q. If you were aware that a mill was in a region where
