Day 249 - 14 May 96 - Page 63

       finished?
       A. Because it was agreed with Mr. Hartley, the writs were
served in October, I think, '90, the service of writs was
       performed by Bishops.

  Q. All the writs?
       A. I think so. Yes, all the writs, I believe, were served
       by Bishops.

  Q. That was your instruction was it?
       A. Well, that is what I agreed with Mrs. Brinley-Codd.
       She passed those instructions on.

  Q. Right. Sorry, I interrupted you?
       A. And then for a couple of main reasons, certainly one
was, I was concerned what the reaction to the service of
the writs would be in so far as the safety of our premises,
staff, etcetera, were concerned. I wanted an operator to
be kept in just for that reason. Hartley had expressed
some concern about the safety of his operators if he pulled
them out too quickly and asked for it to be spread over a
period of time, and it was agreed that the withdrawal would
be phased to end in January 1991.

  Q. He was expressing concern if he pulled out all his
operatives at one time; how many did he have going at the
       time?
       A. I have no idea.

  Q. Pardon?
       A. I have no idea.

  Q. He could be talking a load of rubbish?
       A. Pardon?

  Q. He could?
       A. No, we were getting reports from operator A and
operator B and operator C, but I have no idea of the total
       number of them were.

  Q. He had at least 4 operating?
       A. I believe so. Whether he had them right at the end or
       not, I do not know.

  Q. He wanted to pull them out gradually did he?
       A. Yes.

  Q. How can you be so sure that it was January 1991 that the
       contract ended?
       A. I just know it was. I received no further reports.

  Q. How do you remember it was January 1991?
       A. I know it was January 1991. I do not know how I
remember. I know it was January 1991.

  Q. Was there any kind of formal contract written?
       A. No.

  Q. Arranged with...
       A. No.
