Day 265 - 19 Jun 96 - Page 28

MR. RAMPTON: It is at the bottom of your Lordship's notes.
"Leaflets given to me as I left. Some anti-McD
       leaflets."

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Now, where you have read those you are
checking that is accurate, are you Mr. Rampton?

MR. RAMPTON: Yes. I am going to do that in a minute, just
       now.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Very well. I have to say throughout, when
Ms. Steel and Mr. Morris have read parts of notes to a
witness without any contradiction from a witness, I have
assumed that the witness there again is saying that--

MR. RAMPTON: It was for that reason, my Lord, I asked the
general question, 'can he say' that he was 'satisfied
that', by and large, the notes are accurate? I do not want
to ask the question each time.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Quite, but Ms. Steel and Mr. Morris read them
out either because they wanted the witness, in effect, to
say that is right or because they wanted to challenge
       something.

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: But I am -- just so it is quite clear that
where you are reading something out, you are quite right
that you have generally had them, as it were, verified, as
to what happened, admittedly in a negative way but that is
       what it amounted to.

MR. RAMPTON: I am sorry. Has your Lordship finished?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. I have. I just want to make sure I have
got it clear that it is going in as evidence.

MR. RAMPTON: It is, my Lord. What consequences flow from that
       is obviously another question.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Another matter, yes.

MR. RAMPTON: Mr. Claire, can you look at that document the
       usher has just given you?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Do you recognise it?
       A. Yes, I do.

  Q. When do you think was the first time you saw that document?
       A. Perhaps, I think, in fact, I would have seen it before
going to any meetings. I recall what my instructions were
before attending any meetings and one of them was to
identify and establish the authors, as I said earlier.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Keep your voice up?
       A. The multi-sided leaflet.
