Day 099 - 08 Mar 95 - Page 56

found no record of this particular alleged incident?
       A. Correct.

  Q. No record, therefore, of any out of court settlement?
       A. Correct.

  Q. Then it is said that in or around 1987 -- this is before
your time -- in Hackney, EHOs from the local authority
found Salmonella virus. Is there such a thing as
       Salmonella virus?
       A. Salmonella is not a virus, no, it is a bacteria.

  Q. Salmonella in sewage outlets at the local McDonald's store,
do you know anything about that?
       A. No, I have no -- as you say, it was before my time.
I did check the records which we do keep and I could find
       nothing about that.

  Q. Would it surprise you that some EHOs -- why they should be
looking, I do not know -- found Salmonella bacteria in a
       sewage outlet.
       A. It would not surprise me that they found Salmonella in
       a sewage, quite honestly.

  Q. What other unpleasant sorts of the things that might be a
danger to human health might be found in a sewage outlet?
       A. Well, you would naturally find the contents of the
human gut so you would have any number of coli forms,
       E.coli in there.

  Q. Do we harbour in our gut E.coli 0157?
       A. It is possible.

  Q. Do we harbour Campylobacter?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Staphylococci?
       A. Not necessarily in the gut but in other bodily places,
       yes.

  Q. Or might we excrete them?
       A. Yes, we might.

  Q. Then it is said on a date (which is not specified) a
gentleman called Shaun Lynch discovered a live worm in a
hamburger purchased at the Woolwich McDonald's; that when
he complained he was offered a free meal. We know that he
did complain because you have appended a letter and a
newspaper article, or part of one, to your statement. It
is said, according to the newspaper, that the worm was
alive and that it was three inches long. Yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I think the assertion is that it was in the lettuce?
       A. That was my understanding, yes.

  Q. Do you know anything about that incident? Apart from what
we have in your appendix, have you found any factual
       account of this incident?
       A. No, I have included everything that I could find,
