Day 069 - 19 Dec 94 - Page 47

Q. But when did you seek guarantees of the suppliers who are
supplying the raw material?
A. I do not know.

Q. Do you do that now?
A. No. It is the US DA jurisdiction, and it is the
responsibility of suppliers to comply with that. It is in
the spec that we use 100 per cent domestic beef, and it is
the supplier's responsibility as well as FSIS to follow
that.

Q. Talking about specifications, when was the first time it
was specified that suppliers should not use beef that had
come from recently deforested ex-rainforest land?
A. I do not know.

Q. It is in the specifications now, is it not? There is a
phrase?
A. Yes, it is.

Q. We have got the specifications going back ten, 15 years,
which have been disclosed by McDonald's, which you have
seen some of. You can take my word for it, there is only
one from 1989, I believe, that actually mentions that
phrase?
A. Or it could be an addendum.

Q. Can you get out volume pink IX? I think it is the
international specification.
A. It would have to be international addendum,
specification addendum, because in the US there is no
rainforest, so there was no need for that.

MR. RAMPTON: Page 21.

MR. MORRIS: Yes, page 21.
A. Point number 2?

Q. Point number 2. Have you seen that specification before
1989?
A. Yes, I have.

Q. So was the first time you saw it in 1986, or did it appear
before that?
A. No. One of the things that I need to clarify, it is a
revised date of 1989. The date that it was issued was
November 7th, 1973.

Q. So that point number 2, has that always been on them?
A. It has been. I do not know, I do not know. I have to
look at every single spec before that and every single
product specification before that, and also I know, I am
well aware, that our policy for rainforest was well in
place before we even stated it in the product
specification. Developing the product specification takes
a lot of time, as you would imagine.

Q. The purpose of a specification is to identify what the
policy of the suppliers is; yes?
