animals consume a concern for -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is a matter of comment, is it not? He
has given what appears to be a candid answer.

MS. STEEL: While we are discussing cattle feed, is it right
that when the broiler sheds are cleaned out the environment/index.html">litter from
the floor of the broiler sheds can get mixed into food to
be fed to cattle? You are not aware of that?
A. No.

Q. What about slaughterhouse waste that is sometimes fed to
cattle as well, is it not?
A. No, not unless you are talking about protein meal. Not
waste, no. I mean, if we are going to talk about that you
have to be very accurate in your definition of "waste".

Q. So what is it that goes into the cattle feed then?
A. At this moment in time nothing because it is banned.

Q. That is because of BSE, is it?
A. That was the reason for it.

Q. So when was that brought in?
A. Two years ago.

Q. So prior to that time there were no restrictions on the use
of whatever by-products from slaughterhouses or waste
faeces and what have you from farms being used in food?
A. No, no, not faeces. If you are going to make protein
meal you have got to start with protein.

Q. Well, Mr. Gregory, McDonald's expert on animal welfare, did
actually say that the environment/index.html">litter from broiler house floors when
they were cleaned out was sometimes used for cattle feed?
A. I have never come across that in my life. I have never
heard of it before.

Q. So McDonald's does not have any specifications to prevent
that?
A. No, McDonald's does not have any specifications to
prevent that.

Q. Prior to the restrictions brought in with the thing about
BSE, did McDonald's have any policy to prevent the use of
slaughterhouse waste being used in the cattle feed?
A. I wish you would not use the word "waste" because
I think I know what you are driving at and I do not agree
with that.

Q. I cannot remember.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you be more specific?

MS. STEEL: What part were you saying was produced from ----
A. If you were making a protein meal you would make it
with the bungs, the guts, the rumen, the tripe, the horns,
the hooves, that makes protein meal.

Q. So is any of that used in the cattle feed?
