Day 059 - 01 Dec 94 - Page 45

recycled content, you tell us, for the reason, apparently,
that there was a doubt whether they could be in contact
with food and whether that would be permissible. Again
have you a rough idea of the percentage of recycled content
       in the napkins before 1991?
       A. No, not accurately, no. It was fairly high but I could
not accurately tell you what it was.

  Q. Then the second question, since about when do you think
have napkins contained a recycled element?
       A. Napkins?

  Q. Yes, napkins.
       A. Certainly since the early 80s.

  Q. Since the early 80s. Then you tell us that you have
reduced the size of the napkins since March 1991. What was
the reason for that -- was it purely economic?
       A. No, it was source reduction which does result in
       economy as well.

  Q. Is that a reduction in thickness or in area or both?
       A. It is basically area. The napkin still has to have the
       same strength.

  Q. Then paper and two and four hole trays. Tell us quickly,
if you will, what is the function of the two and four hole
       tray?
       A. It is basically, the tray is a rigid, cardboard tray
which is basically used to carry drinks primarily. So, if
you were coming through a drive-through or a take-away and
taking away two or four drinks, you would be given a two or
       four hole tray.

  Q. Who has been making these paper trays for you during that
time since 1981 we have here?
       A. It is a company called Alex Popper in London, South
       London.

  Q. You tell us they have been 100 per cent recycled unbleached
paper since 1981; is that right?
       A. Yes, that is correct.

  Q. Fry cartons (d): "From June 1990 these have been made from
72 per cent recycled paper". Was that the first time that
the fry cartons contained recycled paper, do you know?
       A. To the best of my knowledge, yes.

  Q. What about the apple pie cartons which are also since May
       1991, 72 per cent recycled?
       A. Yes, it is the same supplier.

  Q. Place mats now 100 per cent. Did they ever contain any
       recycled content before that?
       A. I believe they did, although I cannot accurately tell
       you how much.

  Q. Over the page, page 10 (g): "Toilet rolls: All have been
made from 100 per cent recycled paper since August 1989"?
       A. Yes.
