Day 207 - 23 Jan 96 - Page 71
blowing. I did not want to make an assumption and then,
you know, be told that I should have checked it out.

MR. MORRIS: There is one question I had on that which
I forgot. If you look at page 407 and page 408 the store,
apparently at midnight, had six people on when it finished
on 407, but then when it started again at midnight on 408,
the next day, an extra member of staff came in at midnight,
which seems a bit unlikely. Is there any explanation for
that?
A. No, I -- a member of staff would not start at
midnight. The only way you can cross reference it is to
refer it back to the original clock card file which should
indicate what happened there.

Q. Right. Thank you.

MS. STEEL: No further questions.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you.

Re-Examined by MR. RAMPTON QC

MR. RAMPTON: Mr. Henden, while you have got that out, there
seems to be some sort of challenge to your evidence that
you having reviewed these files, you say, "By and large the
members of crew in-store on each hour are about right for
the work to be done on that day and that time of year".
Can you look at page 410?
A. I can, yes.

Q. I tell you that the 8th August 1993 was a Sunday, so the
figures recorded in this document are for the Saturday, the
previous day, the 7th August. Just glance down the
lunchtime part of it - from ten o'clock in the morning
through to about four o'clock in the afternoon and the
numbers of staff in the store, the crew in the store in
each hour are in the right-hand column?
A. Yes.

Q. Do those, for that time of the year on a Saturday, do those
seem to you to be adequate numbers?
A. They do.

Q. Just so that we get a bit of a picture of this, turn,
please, to page 413 which is the one made on the 12th
August, and that was a Thursday, so that it reflects
Wednesday's figures. We see the figures in the middle
column and the next column are quite a lot lower than they
were for a Saturday. For a Wednesday those figures of 20,
23, 24, 21, and so on, are those sensible figures or not?
A. They are.

Q. The Wednesday lunchtime. Can we just try and have a look
at a Friday in the list, and this way we get a different
year if we go to page 710. The 6th August 1994, a year
later, was a Saturday, so these are Friday's figures. One
notices, if one looks at the same column -- have you got
it, Mr. Henden? 710, it is tab 16; do you have it?
A. I do, yes.
