Day 265 - 19 Jun 96 - Page 26

  Q. Can we then start -- I am afraid this is not your fault.
Indeed, it is not our fault. Your chronology in the
statement is muddled because of the way events have
       proceeded in Court?
       A. Right.

  Q. Can we start, please, with the last of your statements
which is the third, which is at tab 5C? You tell us in the
third paragraph what your instructions were. You say: "I
was told the company was with McDonald's who wanted to find
out for a leaflet emanating from a group called London
Greenpeace." This is about December 89?
       A. That is correct, sir.

  Q. Can you remember, Mr. Claire, whether -- I will just read
the next sentence. "I was asked to try and establish who
were the core members of the group and who were the authors
and distributors of this leaflet." Do you remember
whether when you got your instructions you were shown a
copy of the leaflet or not, or were you just told about it?
       A. I cannot recall. I might have been shown.

  Q. Well, if you do not remember whether you were shown it you
will not remember whether it was described to you either, I
       suppose?
       A. I recall vaguely the meeting and I recall vaguely what
-- I recall the instructions. Whether it was at that
meeting or, perhaps, at subsequent meeting or -- but a
leaflet was described me because that is what I was sent to
look out for, but I cannot recall specifically.

  Q. Well, now, if you take... Leave that one where it is,
please, and I hope I am not cramming you up too much. The
photographs I hope you have put on one side, have you?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Can you take the other blue file, please? (Same handed)
Open it, please, at page 53 which you will see, I hope, in
handwriting at the bottom of the page.

  MS. STEEL: Of the notes?

  MR. RAMPTON: Of the notes?
       A. Right, of my notes?

  Q. Well, these are a composite of the notes by you and other
       people?
       A. Right.

  Q. What I would like you to tell me is whether there is a note
       at page 53 dated 4th January, '90?
       A. Yes, there is.

  Q. There is, and is that your handwriting?
       A. Yes, it is.

MR. MORRIS: It is page 3 of his notes.
       A. Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: It is page 53 of the file. If you look through
