Day 014 - 20 Jul 94 - Page 43
1 MR. MORRIS: So when we say it is lower 1600 mg ---- What does
the RNI in that case -----
2
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Although I do not want to be unhelpful,
3 basically you have to reserve your cross-examination for
the end.
4
MR. MORRIS: I understand that.
5
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Otherwise it becomes scrappy when it says
6 'enough or more than enough', 'more than enough' is not
pejorative in that as I understand it in that definition,
7 in order to be confident of getting enough, you may well
in fact take on board more than you need?
8 A. That is right.
9 Q. So there is no suggestion that the RNI is too much?
A. No.
10
Q. As I understand it.
11 A. No, that would be my understanding as well.
12 MR. RAMPTON: Of course, I take it that the need will vary from
person to person?
13 A. Absolutely.
14 Q. You must not regard this as a figure setting statement?
A. Again, it will also depend on the circumstances
15 because if you are in a particularly hot climate then the
salt loss would be greater so the requirement would be
16 greater.
17 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I just ask this last question then we
will break off until two o'clock. 25.4 deals with
18 excretion as well as intake. With salt is excretion
related in part to intake? What I am really getting at is:
19 Does the body have a mechanism for excreting more salt if
too much salt is taken in?
20 A. Yes. Again, that would be my understanding of how it
works. I am not an expert in this particular field, but
21 certainly if the kidneys are functioning all right, they
will get rid of the excess.
22
23 (Short Adjournment)
24 2.00 p.m..
25 MR. JUSTICE BELL: As a matter of general interest perhaps,
more than specific interest, I notice from (vi) glossary
26 of terms that honey is extrinsic sugar as, indeed, is
lactose; (vi) the beginning of that glossary, table sugar
27 obviously, because the lactose is not within the cell wall
of the food. That is the technical distinction, is it?
28 A. That is right, but the lactose is not included in the
recommendations for extrinsic sugars. It talks about
29 non-milk.
30 MR. JUSTICE BELL: There is a specific reference in the
paragraph.
