Day 128 - 24 May 95 - Page 26
A. I do not know. I would assume it was easier for Frank
to set up in the North West and the North East, which was
his region. He was a lot closer to those regions than he
was to Scotland. He could cover those two regions as well,
which would be a different contractor for Scotland. It was
just distance.

Q. Can I just ask you about something you said yesterday, or
it was a quote from your report about Mark Hopkins,
I think: "We aim to train all salaried managers in First
Aid. We are approximately 50 per cent of the way in
meeting this objective", and then Mr. Rampton asked
you: "How far are you now, as at 1995?" You said: "80 to
90 per cent". What is the difficulty, why have you not got
100 per cent training?
A. There are new Managers coming through all of the time.

Q. They do not get First Aid training when they start as a new
Manager?
A. Not when they start, no. It is part of their training
schedule, but it is not when they start. There was some
catching up to do, obviously. I believe with Floor
Managers it is part of what they do before they are allowed
to run shifts. Second Assistant, I believe it is still
shortly after ---

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you remember about what I said about
speaking out into the court, please?
A. Sorry. The Floor Managers, they get it as part of
their training, but I believe with the Second Assistants,
it is still scheduled in slightly afterwards.

MS. STEEL: What is the turnover of managers then?
A. I do not know.

Q. The Floor Managers get it as part of their training. Are
you talking about their initial training?
A. As part of their shift running training.

Q. Shift running training?
A. Yes.

Q. When do they get that, before they start as Floor Managers?
A. No, there is a difference between a shift running Floor
Manager and a Floor Manager, because Floor Managers are
hourly-paid employees -- well, they have always been
developed from crew members. They are not allowed to run
shifts straightaway. In fact, mostly they are used either
running the kitchen area or running the front counters.
Where there is perhaps a more mature Floor Manager or a
more experienced floor manager, they are then put forward
to running shifts.

Q. Is that when they become salaried?
A. No, they still stay hourly paid, but they go on extra
training, and part of that is First Aid.

Q. I cannot remember, what level do they start, what level of
management do they start to be salaried, as opposed to
hourly paid?
