Day 258 - 07 Jun 96 - Page 39

MS. STEEL: I am not trying to hold things up.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I know you are not. I am not suggesting you
are doing so on purpose, but it is unfortunate when it
happens. Would it help if I rose for about ten minutes or
       quarter of an hour?

MS. STEEL: It might enable me to get something.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: How long do you think you are going to be?
I really think I must put a time limit on completing your
cross-examination, you and Mr. Morris between you, of Mr.
Nicholson. Then the shutters will just have to come down
of whatever time I choose. I want some help on how long
you at the moment you expect to take.

MS. STEEL: My estimate is -- I mean, I do not, it is really
hard to tell because I have papers all over the place.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do your best.

MS. STEEL: Definitely not longer than a day, but probably
something -- I do not know, something around half a day
I should think but I do not know.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. You have until noon on Monday to
complete your cross-examination of Mr. Nicholson. That is
the rest of this afternoon, and an hour and a half on
Monday morning. At 12 noon on Monday I am going to say,
that is it. You should be able to put everything you need
to put then, bearing in mind how long you have had
already. I will rise until half past 2, in order to give
you a chance to get organised, but that is when your
cross-examination will end if you have not completed it
       before then.

I hope, in fact, it enables you the better to get organised
when you know just what time you have to apply for
       cross-examination.

                        (Short adjournment)

MS. STEEL: The instructions that you gave to the inquiry
agents, is it fair to say that basically you said to them,
'get on with what you have to do to get the information
and if you have to get involved in pickets,
       demonstrations--
       A. No.

  Q. -- and leafleting, then just get on with it'?
       A. No, I never mentioned that.

  Q. But you were aware they might have to do that in order to
       be accepted by the group?
       A. I knew that was a possibility, yes.

  Q. Right. You told them to look out for particular people,
       did you not?
       A. No, I asked them to identify the organisers.
