Day 179 - 30 Oct 95 - Page 30
Q. Up to seven times a week. This is milk shake mix, syrups,
ketchup, mustard, yes?
A. Not so much mustard. Occasionally, if you water down
things like that too much it goes too runny.

Q. Yes, it does. Have you ever tried watered down ketchup?
A. Yes, I have seen it done.

Q. It comes out like almost like red water, does it not?
A. Yes, that is right.

Q. Absolutely hopeless as a condiment to put on a McDonald's
product, is it not? The Big Macs, the ordinary hamburgers,
the cheese burgers, or whatever else has ketchup on them,
must have been coming back in floods from the customers,
must they not?
A. Not really, no, because the ketchup would be mixed.

Q. Mixed?
A. Stirred.

Q. Yes, but if you watered it down, if we may use the
expression, if you cut it by 50 per cent with water, it is
going to be unrecognisable as ordinary ketchup, is it not?
A. I never said it would be 50 per cent.

Q. Shall we use the same proportions, a bucket per gallon and
a half?
A. It would be a lot less than that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: He said it was less than 50 per cent. He did
say a bucket, but he did not agree with your suggestion
that it was as much as 50 per cent. He said it was less
than that.

MR. RAMPTON: It must be, must it not, Mr. Gibney, an amount of
water put in that makes it financially worthwhile to do it,
must it not?
A. Yes, overall, yes.

Q. Even if you water it down by as much as a third, the
ketchup is going to look like something completely
different?
A. It would be nothing like that amount.

Q. What then is the point?
A. To save money.

Q. How much? Give us an idea of the amount of the watering
down of the ketchup and of the mustard at the same time?
A. The ketchup came in five litre cartons, and sometimes,
say, if it was half used, you may take it back to the sink
and put an inch of water in there.

Q. An inch of water?
A. Yes.

Q. That was supposed to be worthwhile, was it, as the yield
saver or increaser, was it?
A. For the amount of the ketchup used, yes, I would say it
