Day 180 - 31 Oct 95 - Page 42

       A. Indeed.

  Q. It is £3 an hour at that time for provincial which, in
fact, the chart above it was relating to provincial?
       A. Yes. I mean, even the premium rate out of London for
McDonald's, even the premium Outer London rate, is only
just on the general sales assistant lower quartile
       nationally.

  Q. There is just one other document I would like to put to
       you.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a minute. Does your experience of
the industry enable you to tell me, because we have in the
past had some debate as to how McDonald's crew are best
reflected by other descriptions, what is the difference
between a general sales assistant and a sales person?
       A. None whatsoever. If you look at page 6 -----

  Q. There is a difference because they have different rates of
       pay?
       A. Yes, but I am referring to page 6, my Lord, because
this question is actually answered on page 6.

  Q. Yes.
       A. General sales assistant. The categories of staff
heading? It says: "Duties include assisting customers to
select goods and may include stocking shelves, equivalent
to our crew level employee, equivalent to our crew level
employee". This is why it is a relevant job category and,
       indeed, McDonald's accepts the comparator.

  Q. Why do you say that?
       A. Well, because of what I have just read out in the
second line of that, it is equivalent to crew level
employee, that is, this is a McDonald's document.

  Q. I see.
       A. They are saying it is equivalent to our ------

  Q. Let me make a note.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. I have lost where the reference was to
-- it is probably, what the date was when the survey was
       made.

MR. MORRIS: I do not know if it said so.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It does -- I do not think it says on the
sheets but we may have had some, but I cannot remember
       whether ......

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I have a note that it is 1993.

MR. MORRIS: I think, yes, it might be or 1992 because -----

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I have a note that it says 1993.

MR. MORRIS: McDonald's wage in 1992 was £3 provincial starting
rate, so that coincides to this one.
