Day 096 - 03 Mar 95 - Page 33
A. And those that supply weaners for the Freedom Food
system are bought in at 40 kilogrammes.

Q. What percentage of the 35,000 finishing herd would be
bought in then?
A. Are you quoting figures in here, are you not, now?

Q. Yes.
A. That is a little bit out of date. It is a little bit
larger now.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Give an up-to-date figure, if you like, but
answer Ms. Steel's question about the percentage.
A. Which are bought in from outside weaners, roughly 50
per cent.

MS. STEEL: Would that be similar to the pigs that you buy for
the slaughterhouses? The vast majority would be the pigs
that are raised, the weaners that are raised indoors rather
than outdoor ones?
A. No, they will be the biggest majority, those reared
outdoors.

Q. What percentage then?
A. 70 per cent, something like that, 75.

Q. 75 per cent of the 35,000?
A. No.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. What percentage of the pigs which go
into the finishing units are bought in?
A. About 50 per cent. We produce about 50 per cent from
our own farms, roughly.

MR. MORRIS: And 75 per cent of them, you think, would be raised
outdoors?
A. Roughly.

MS. STEEL: What percentage of the pigs that are bought in for
slaughter are brought in company vehicles and what would be
contracted vehicles?
A. About 75 per cent are brought in by our own company
vehicles.

Q. The company ones are the ones that have hydraulically
operated decks?
A. Correct.

Q. Whereas the contracted ones would not?
A. Incorrect.

Q. They have all got hydraulically operated decks?
A. No. By far the biggest majority have hydraulically
operated decks. To my knowledge, there is only two people
who supply to us with the first deck solid.

Q. The hydraulically operated decks reduces the amount of
stress in the pigs, do they not?
A. Yes.
