Day 077 - 25 Jan 95 - Page 80

  Q. What sort of land did you see them growing on?
       A. Scrub, pampas.

  Q. How long did you spend on that exercise?
       A. A full, long day.

  Q. Did Mr. Day show you any map while you were there, can you
       remember?
       A. I cannot remember.

  Q. As clearly as you can remember now, how far, if at all, was
anything that Mr. Day said inconsistent with what
Lord Vesty had said to you in June of that year in that
       letter?
       A. Nothing.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know where Peter Day is now? Have you
had any contact with him recently?
       A. No, sir, I have not. He has probably gone back to Rock
Hamilton, Queensland, which was his home but that is pure
       supposition.

MR. RAMPTON: He is an Australian, is he?
       A. Australian.

  Q. What sort of age of man would he be now, do you know, apart
from the fact he is 11 years older than he was then?
       A. I guess he is 40, 45.

  Q. I see, so he is not an old man?
       A. Oh, no. He was a Vesty trainee.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I have maps on which all the various
places are marked but, to be quite honest, I do not really
think there is any need to introduce them through a witness
because they speak for themselves -- they are public
documents -- unless your Lordship would like to look at one
       now?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. I am content to leave to you, Ms. Steel
and Mr. Morris to what extent I look at the maps. I looked
very briefly at a map which had various hatchings on.

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: But I did not try to see where any of the
       little blue boxes were particularly.

MR. RAMPTON: No, my Lord. That is a different map. We believe
it is the Braslo map of which Dr. Gomez spoke.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: But that is the only map. I have not done
any secret research with my own copy of the Times atlas or
       anything like that.

MR. RAMPTON: No. I have marked on it where the various places,
as best I can, referred to in the Vesty letter are. That
is for the witness and that is for the Judge. I will speak
this out loud so it gets on the transcript.
(To the witness): We see San Paulo, do we not, at the
