Day 020 - 28 Jul 94 - Page 12

1 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Of what?
              A. Apparent insensibility using behavioural criteria.
2 When the tests were done here, we were looking immediately
after the stunner, which would have been before that 52
3 seconds period, when you would have had otherwise the
              first bird regaining consciousness.
     4
MS. STEEL: So the birds could have come around afterwards?
5 A. Between stunning and that 52 seconds period in the
commercial context, there is neck cutting. So that will
6 interfere with the expression, can interfere with the
expression depending on what you cut on the resumption of
7 consciousness. It can kill the bird, which is the object
of the whole procedure; it avoids the resumption of
8 consciousness, or if you are severing the spinal chord, as
I mentioned in one of my reports, you mask that.
     9
MR. JUSTICE BELL: What period of time would blood still be
10 pumped to the brain following the form of neck cutting
              here?
11 A. Can I check on which vessels were cut? You are
              talking about February?
    12
         Q. Yes, it is on page 250.
    13 A. Thank you.

14 Q. "... usually severing an external carotid artery, a
vertebral artery, and the spinal cord".
    15
MS. STEEL: Is it right that if you only -----
    16
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Could he answer that question?
    17
MS. STEEL: It was related to that.
    18
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let him answer, then ask another one.
19 A. There has been research work showing the time to an
iso-electroencephalogram, which is a good criteria time to
20 found brain failure, not time to loss of consciousness,
time to brain failure. If you make a superficial cut such
21 as that there, I can give you absolute data based on the
review that was submitted yesterday as an addition in the
22 context of Schutt Abraham's evidence, Schutt Abraham's
              report.
    23
         Q. Where is that?
    24
MS. STEEL: If it is any help, this is what I was trying to
    25 bring up. I have a document.

26 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you refer him to it? To start with, it
might be a good idea if he referred to the document he has
    27 mentioned himself.
              A. Can I ask whether that was actually submitted in that
    28 context? It was, yes.

29 Q. At the moment I have not identified which document you are
              referring to.
    30
MS. STEEL: Is it that one, Processing of Poultry?
