Day 093 - 28 Feb 95 - Page 33

       A. Right.

  Q. So that they walk on to the conveyor?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. Then they are taken off at the other end and put in cages?
       A. In cages, that is correct.

  Q. Does the conveyor go right up to the lorry?
       A. It goes into a ramp.

  Q. A truck?
       A. Yes, into a ramp that goes into the cages.

MS. STEEL: Where do they pick them up by the legs then?
       A. There.

  Q. When? At what stage of this process are they picking them
       up by the legs?
       A. At the end of the funnel.

  Q. Before the conveyor belt or after the conveyor belt?
       A. No, no, at the conveyor belt.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: As I understand it, they are herded into a
       funnel?
       A. Yes.

  Q. And they walk on the conveyor belt?
       A. Yes.

  Q. When they get to the other end of the conveyor belt you
       spoke about a ramp?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What happens then?
       A. OK, the chicks or the chickens will stay there and then
       are picked up from there.

  Q. So they come off the conveyor belt on to a ramp?
       A. Right.

  Q. Under their own -- they walk off, do they?
       A. Yes, they are transported by the belt and then they
move. Once there is a few chickens, so they go back and
pick them up from the ramp and put them in the cages.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Does the detail really matter? I thought the
main point you were getting at was the picking up of the
chickens at some stage. It appears that they are picked up
once. Dr. Gomez says they are picked up by both legs, and
it appears that they are not then carried very far because
they are, effectively, at the lorry and then they are put
       in the cages.

MS. STEEL: So about half the people are inside the shed doing
the herding and half are loading the lorry?
       A. Well, it will change. At the beginning you do not need
a lot of people. One person can do the herding. At the
end when there is more need for more, they will change.
