Day 246 - 09 May 96 - Page 09
answer, unless you think you have particular ground to
make, leave it there because it is then a matter of
argument as to whether I accept Mr. Preston's answers, or
whether I accept the contrary view you would put.

MS. STEEL: OK.

MR. MORRIS: You are aware there were 28 pre-trial hearings, are
you, Mr. Preston -- or approximately?
A. I know there were many, I never counted them.

Q. Right, and you would accept the right of people's comment
on the result of those pretrial hearings and the rulings
made in those hearings?
A. I think things that are public are subject to certain
rules and regulations just the same way as closed hearings
are. I would have to take counsel on that one. I do not
know what all 28 were, sir. I do not know what was
discussed. I do not know what restrictions may or may not
have been given or said, I just do not know.

Q. There was no restriction on the press reporting any result
of any pre-trial hearing that I know of?
A. Fair enough.

Q. OK.

MS. STEEL: Scope Communications, they would not be involved in
anything other than matters of publicity, would they?
A. Yes, many, many, many more things.

Q. They would?
A. They help me write speeches, they arrange interviews,
occasionally, with magazines. They have been involved in
major promotional activities with the Company, there are
now well known efforts to celebrate our 20th anniversary
and raise £1 million for children's charities. This is
something they were the front people on. They are very
involved in our entire business.

Q. Right. In terms of with London Greenpeace, the -- well,
actually, all those things are matters of publicity anyway,
are not they?
A. They may or may not get some. You never know for sure,
do you?

Q. No, but that is the aim of all those ----
A. You hope so, certainly.

Q. I mean Scope do not help you with any legal matters, do
they?
A. No. I think lawyers deal with that.

Q. Yes. So everything that was discussed with Scope about
London Greenpeace would have been about publicity about the
case of one sort or another?
A. I do not know if it was discussed, I was not there.

Q. Would you know of them discussing anything other than
things about this court case and about London Greenpeace?
