Day 179 - 30 Oct 95 - Page 22
said June 1984 in your -----
A. Yes. Shortly after the store opened which was June
1984.

Q. You said about the crew were expected to take their breaks
outside the building because of the crew room being
closed. I do not know if I need to ask you anything.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, you see, I do not think you do. I really
think you have to ask yourself -- there is absolutely no
point in just asking more questions so that the witness
will be an hour and three-quarters in chief rather than 20
minutes in chief once I have got his written statement;
whereas Mr. Rampton has said he did not expect you or
Ms. Steel to put all your case, I would expect Mr. Rampton
in cross-examining to put the essence of his case and what
Mr. Davis said in answer. No doubt, he will make his own
decision about what is vital to be put and what can be
left. If he will excuse me saying so, I would not be
surprised if he does not forget some things too. But, in
essence, you can expect Mr. Rampton to put what a positive
opposing case is or what an innocent explanation might be
of something. You do not improve things just by going
through and asking for elaboration on the positive evidence
which at this stage you have subject to cross-examination.

MR. MORRIS: Right. Just one question about this situation
about the crew room; you said that you went to the
Citizens' Advice Bureau ---
A. Yes, that is right.

Q. -- to get advice. It may be an obvious question; what was
their advice?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. I can imagine what it was, but it is not
evidence.

MR. MORRIS: Right, what did you do personally? You said the
staff were expected to take their breaks outside the
building.
A. I sat on the front door step area of the store and ate
my lunch as a form of protest.

Q. Protest?
A. Yes.

Q. Just one question, you said at the bottom of that page
about the management mole: "We would stop talking if a
supposed management mole entered the crew room". Can you
just explain what you mean?
A. Someone who is -- there is always favourites and
someone who is being groomed for promotion (which I was
considered at that time half and half, I suppose), someone
who would report back to the management what was said in
the crew room.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I understand what you mean. You were not
really a mole because you know perfectly well who they
were; I thought moles stayed underground most of the time
but .....
