target, if you had to get a new filter machine because it
was not working properly. How did you actually know this
was the official position?
A. I think at that time it was Mark Davis who told me
that.

Q. Told you what?
A. That we could not afford to buy one at the moment
because it would take us over our maintenance budget.

Q. Was that discussed at a managers' meeting?
A. Probably, but I do not recall.

Q. The accident by Vicky Golding, you said about her burns
being seven inches by two inches. How do you know that?
A. That was an estimate, although it was .....

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Did you see them yourself?
A. I was there and I was the Manager who reported -- put
the accident into the Accident Book, entered the accident
into the Accident Book.

MR. MORRIS: You have said about having to do all night closes
when Supervisors, people above Area Supervisor level, were
going to visit, and you have put "which meant you could do
a shift of 18 hours then be expected to be back at work
five hours later". Did this ever happen to you?
A. Yes, on several occasions, and one instance I can
remember I was on the 4.00 to close shift.

Q. 4.00?
A. 4.00 until close shift, which is eight hours. Then
I was expected to work until 7.00 a.m. cleaning the store
all night, and then in the morning the store was short of
staff, so I was asked or pressured into staying on until
after the lunch period. So my shift, that would have been
23 hours.

Q. Without a break?
A. Without leaving the store.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just let me make a note. (To the witness):
You were doing a 4.00 to 12.00 shift, were you?
A. Yes

MR. MORRIS: So on one occasion you did a 23 hour continuous
shift at McDonald's?
A. Yes.

Q. Do you actually remember whether this was towards the
beginning or to the end of your time there and how old you
might have been at the time?
A. I was around 18. It would be the middle of my time at
McDonald's.

Q. The final question I have is have you any thoughts or
impressions looking back on your time at McDonald's?
A. Just the pace of work there. I remember when I started
at the pub they laughed at me because I could not sit
down. I had to clean an ashtray or wipe the bar whenever
