Day 092 - 27 Feb 95 - Page 46

  Q. 40 or 50 lux?
       A. Yes. Now, that is supplemented with a natural light
that varies throughout the day. It varies -- there is
       plenty of light.

  Q. How does the natural light get in?
       A. Enter?

  Q. Yes.
       A. Oh, throughout the -- there is probably, you probably
cannot call it exactly windows, but you can see from the
inside out and the outside in into the broiler houses.
       They are not sealed.

  Q. What are they?
       A. They are curtains, and those curtains can be moved up
and down depending on the environment. If it is too cold
then they close it and the light itensity will change, it
       will increase.

  Q. Can you explain because I do not understand what you mean
       by "curtains"?
       A. On the sides of the broilers houses there are curtains
that literally, are curtains go up and down.

  Q. Made of what?
       A. Made of, I do not know what they are made of, it is
cotton and some sort of a -----

  Q. Material?
       A. Material.

  Q. They are raised and lowered?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What is behind them?
       A. Behind them is just the outside.

  Q. If the curtain is raised what is to stop the chickens
       getting out and escaping?
       A. There is a screen.

  Q. A screen?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Made of what?
       A. Wire.

  Q. Wire. So, is that a wire mesh?
       A. It is a wire, yes, and they do not start from the very
bottom. They start from about one metre. That is where
the curtains start. So, the chick does not have a chance
to get out or anything from the outside which is our main
concern -- it is not the chicks that go out, it is any bird
that might go in and bring a disease.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So you have got about a metre high of wire
       mesh all the way round?
       A. I am sorry, I did not explain that right.
