Day 046 - 04 Nov 94 - Page 63
A. I think the meaning of promotions for children would be
synonymous in most cases with Happy Meals.

Q. OK. Just leave that and go to the middle column, "taking
kids seriously, more than just clowning around". This is
an interview with ronald mcdonald. Do you know whether
this is a ronald mcdonald, in particular, or whether this
is just supposed to represent the thoughts of Ronald
McDonald on the behalf of the company?
A. I would imagine that it would represent the thoughts of
ronald mcdonald.

Q. Right. It mentions -----
A. I was not in preparation of this document so that would
be my impression.

Q. This mentions the thing about Santa Claus, in fact: "Today
he is almost as well-known as Santa Claus ... only Ronald
has a busier year round schedule"?
A. Yes.

Q. So that rumour is still doing the rounds; is that right?
A. I do not think it is a rumour. Again I have not seen
this specific survey, but I am sure it was taken from a
specific survey.

Q. Going into the second column, third paragraph down, just
about level with the top McLean Deluxe advert, it says:
"Ronald points out that a child's first money transaction
will probably be at a McDonald's".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I would have thought Ronald had a busier year
round schedule than Santa, but I suppose perhaps one must
not take it too pedantically. Yes, where are we? Second
column just above the DLT ad on the right.

MS. STEEL: "Ronald points out that a child's first money
transaction will probably be at a McDonald's", is that
something -----
A. Could well. I mean, a parent will give some money to a
child and he will come up to the counter, he or she will
come up to the counter, and actually order a product.

Q. That is something McDonald's would hope for, that a child's
first money transaction would be at McDonald's?
A. It is certainly educational.

Q. Educational? This is Ronald's own words. He appears to be
saying here that he thinks it is worth making all this
effort with children, so that that is the first place they
will think of going to when they want to spend money for
the first time?
A. I do not think -- I think that is taken out of
context. You have to read the whole thing. But I would
agree that one of the times that many children have their
first money transaction is at McDonald's. It gives them a
sense of what money is all about, and how you can purchase
something with it.

Q. He is saying underneath that: "It is my favourite place in
