Day 269 - 25 Jun 96 - Page 25

I will be happy to discuss in court areas where the
evidence of Dr. Arnott and Professor Naismith's evidence
       appears to conflict with mine.

       Dr. Arnott's evidence:
I do not suggest that the common denominator between cancer
and heart disease is the adhesion to an antherosclerotic
plaque. My hypothesis is that the inducement of cell
adhesion which occurs in metastasis and in thrombosis is
common to both death from heart disease and the spread of
cancer. I stand by this hypothesis and there is now direct
evidence as mentioned above to support it. (Cancer cells
will migrate through the blood stream or the lymphatic
circulation but to take root and grow in another location
they have to adhere to the cell wall.

Thrombosis results from the adhesion and aggregation of
platelets and other blood cells to the vascular lining.
Both conditions are encouraged by high fat, high saturated
fat diets and both are suppressed by the same protective
       conditions.

A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine is
quoted where no relationship is found when several, small
studies were pooled for analysis. There was no distinction
given in the paper of the omega 6 or omega 3 fatty acids.
Yet they have the opposite effects on cancer development.
The British Nutrition Task Force on Unsaturated Fatty Acids
describes enough evidence on this subject already in 1992
so it should have been taken into account.

In essence, linoleic acid is required for the growth of the
cancer cell up to about 4% of the dietary energy so in this
range it acts as an apparent cancer promoter. Arachidonic
acid and other long chain omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty
acids protect against auto-immune disease and increase
       super oxide defense activities."

       I cannot say this one.
       A. Eicosapentaenoic acid.

  Q. All right. "Protects against the --"
       A. Cachexia.

  Q. Maybe you should read it for me.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not worry because the stenographer has a
       copy of the original statement.

MS. STEEL: "...of cancer and in general the omega 3 fatty acids
appear to protective. The paper quoted by Dr. Arnott
refers to polyunsaturated fatty acids as though all of
these fatty acids were the same.

As I mentioned in my previous evidence, cancer research is
about the place cardiovascular research was at in 1953.
That is observing epidemiological evidence which, despite
what Dr. Arnott says, and despite its difficulties, is none
the less strong. Research workers in the cardio-vascular
field are now testing out the different effects of the
