Day 259 - 10 Jun 96 - Page 56

  Q. And you did not discuss overtime specifically?
       A. No.

MS. STEEL: You said that you were payroll manager but that,
basically, tax was your responsibility. Who was the person
who was in charge of overtime calculations?
       A. The Store Manager would have been, at store level.

  Q. What about at Head Office level?
       A. There was not anybody designated for that specific
role, because we did not have a problem with it. The crew
members were paid, and paid to the best of our ability
within the wages department. If an error was made, then we
would put it right. There was not any necessity to have an
       overtime person, as such.

  Q. OK, there may not have been someone that was their sole
responsibility, but was there anybody with the
responsibility for checking overtime payments and
       calculations, and so on?
       A. No, there was not anybody given that specific role, no.
       It was not necessary.

  Q. Because you assumed that it was all OK?
       A. We did not assume. We knew unless somebody, a crew
member, came forward and said, "There is a discrepancy on
my payslip", where we would look into it, either myself or
one of my members of staff, and we would have put it right.

  Q. How did you know that, unless somebody came forward, there
       was no mistake?
       A. You would not, would you? As I said earlier, the only
time that anybody knows if they miscalculated somebody's
pay is if the person in question comes to you and says,
"There is a discrepancy here", and then you would look at
it. Otherwise, you would assume that you have calculated
       correctly.

MS. STEEL: OK, that is fine. Thank you.

MR. MORRIS: Just to clarify, you said you only saw Mr. Mills in
that six year period. That was the person you saw,
Mr. Mills, you did not see any other inspectors?
       A. No, never.

  Q. It was always Mr. Mills?
       A. Always.

  Q. Before that time, had you met a lot of wages inspectors, or
       this was a new responsibility?
       A. It was not a new responsibility, but the companies that
I had worked at previously I do not remember having Wages
       Inspectorate visits, no.

  Q. Right. So, since, you have not been dealing with this kind
       of matter?
       A. No.

  Q. So the only wages inspectors' visits that you have been
