Day 269 - 25 Jun 96 - Page 46

the dietary reference values number 1 which Mr. Rampton was
referring to. I over lunch had a chance, Mr. Rampton, of
       looking at this.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which page are you on?
       A. I am really referring to the constitution of this
committee on medical aspects which Mr. Rampton raised
before lunch, and I think my reply to Mr. Rampton was not
entirely proper. Dr. Whitehead, who was chairman and
director, I have known since days in Africa when we worked
together and both first became interested in nutrition
interestingly, and I would not want my remarks made
previous to lunch to be in any way critical of any of the
       members of this committee.

But what I had not taken on board was the proper provenance
of this report which is Dietary Reference Values for Food
Energy and Nutrients for the UK. It is not a report, nor
is it an expert panel convened to discuss either diet and
cardiovascular disease or cancer, and that was not the
       brief, although they mention it.

And so therefore I would, with respect, suggest to you that
the provenance of this report is specifically on dietary
reference values of a whole range of nutrients, rather than
on the specific context of diet and cancer and diet and
heart disease. So what they actually say on diet and
cancer or diet and heart disease needs to be qualified with
that in mind, that they are not an expert committee
       discussing that subject.

MR. RAMPTON: In fact, I am right in thinking, am I not,
Professor, that there will, I hope, within the next year or
so, perhaps, I hope, when this case is over, be published a
COMA report on diet and cancer?
       A. I believe that is correct.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you read that?
       A. Yes, that is a different situation.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Equivalent of this?
       A. That is correct, yes. It is going to be the
equivalent of this, that is correct.

MR. RAMPTON: Professor, can we go back to your statement. I
was on the second page. I had number 3 and I renumbered 2.
Where we left it was at North Karelia?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I would like you to look at another study of Finnish diet.
Which you will find in an orange volume.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I just clear my decks, please, Mr.
       Rampton.

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes.

MS. STEEL: Which bundle will this be in?

  MR. RAMPTON: Orange 4.
