Day 138 - 20 Jun 95 - Page 26

  Q. Professor at the Warden School, the University of
       Pennsylvania?
       A. Yes, I did not know him up until this time, but we
asked around. He was, to answer your question
specifically, a professor -- he may very well still be --
at the University of Pennsylvania, the Warden School,
specifically, who has an extremely fine reputation within
       the Philadelphia area.

  Q. You had already concluded, Mr. Stein, that the claims made
by the PUP were false ---
       A. That is correct.

  Q. -- in this regard. Why did you take the trouble to
instruct outside independent experts to do, in effect, the
       same work all over again?
       A. That was because we were meeting with various sisters
and black clergy, and we concluded that the best way to
resolve this matter in their minds, because you have PUP
claiming one thing, we were saying something different,
that the best way of resolving this thing was to bring in
someone or some folks whose integrity the ministers and the
sisters respected and let them conduct their own
independent survey so that we would be factual as to what
       was really happening.

  Q. We will look at their findings in a moment, but when they
had done their survey, Towers Perrin and Professor Perry,
and had reached their conclusion, did you present those
conclusions to the black clergy, the sisters and so on and
       so forth?
       A. Yes, we did.

  Q. Did you publicise them generally in the region?
       A. Yes, we did.

  Q. What was the effect of that effort on your part, so far as
this campaign against McDonald's was concerned?
       A. It helped to resolve it considerably.

  Q. If you look at page 1472 which, I hope, is in front you,
the third paragraph reads as follows: "In fact, TPF&C's
research indicated that the average differential between
city and suburban starting wage rates for the
McDonald's restaurants included in PUP's survey is actually
11 cents ($3.99 for the city v. $4.10 for the suburbs).
The survey also revealed that the median starting wage for
both city and suburban restaurants is exactly the same, at
$4.00 an hour". Is that or is it not an accurate summary
       of the survey's findings?
       A. Totally accurate.

  Q. If you look on a few pages to 1475, do you see some tables?
       A. Yes, I do.

  Q. You will have to turn them sideways to read them
comfortably. Where did these tables come from? Is this a
McDonald's document or did it come from the people who do
       the surveys?
