MR. RAMPTON: It is your belief then, Ms. Mead, that this is the
most up-to-date information available at the time when this
chart was prepared?
A. Yes, because there are -- I think they are updated, the
survey is updated, for different sectors of industry at
different times, and so it is a kind of rolling process.

Q. This gives us some basis for comparison particularly,
perhaps, for catering, I do not know. The government
information relates to shop assistants, shelf fillers,
catering, chefs, cooks, barmen and cash handling clerks.
Below that we see what the McDonald's figures are, yes?
A. Yes.

Q. Then there is a summary -- presumably again coming from the
government -- of basic rates for industry, hotel and
catering and then retail, yes?
A. Yes.

Q. Do you notice that in industry or in this sector of
industry, generally, women seem to get paid less than men
do you see that?
A. Yes.

Q. Whereas at McDonald's they get the same?
A. Yes.

Q. So far as the men are concerned, you will see that the men
start off at McDonald's at significantly less -- perhaps
you might agree -- than hotel and catering men do. Do you
see that?
A. Yes.

Q. Then if you look at the next document G2 -- do you know who
compiled this document, External Survey of Hourly Rates,
Retail and Catering?
A. I believe it is members of the Human Resources
Department.

Q. By?
A. People -- members of the Human Resources Department.

Q. I see, yes. Your Department?
A. Yes.

Q. Do you know the date of this?
A. No, not of this document precisely, no.

Q. Do you think it is more recent than -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I just say it is quite true that if one
looks at the figures on G1 the starting rates are less, but
the rates in the New Earnings Survey, if my recollection is
correct, are not starting rates, they are just overall, are
they not?
A. Yes, that is right.

Q. There are various New Earnings Surveys?
A. Yes, that is right.
