Day 123 - 09 May 95 - Page 48
Q. I just read somewhere he had been quoted as saying that he
maintained it was possible to get addicted to hamburgers,
and that it gets so that your blood turns into ketchup, or
something like that. Have you heard him saying anything
like that?
A. Well, I will tell you this, I have used the phrase
before and it has to do with McDonald's culture. I think
that the business is almost magical to some of us, in the
sense that you are so motivated, so involved in working
with the different aspects of McDonald's, that we have
often used the phrase, many of us old-timers -- and I
characterise myself, my Lord, as an old-timer -- that if
you were to cut us, you know, we would probably ---

Q. Bleed ketchup?
A. -- bleed ketchup, yes.

Q. But in terms of the other part, I think he said something
like he could eat hamburgers three times a day, and that,
you know, he maintained you could get addicted to
hamburgers in those terms of eating them, as opposed to
working in the business?
A. I do not know about, you know, addicted.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know if he ever said anything like
that, first of all.
A. No, the only thing I can say is that I know he is quite
fond of hamburgers, as a number of us, you know, happen to
be.

MS. STEEL: So it is a sort of thing that people like you and
him that are particularly fond of hamburgers, they might
say that kind of thing?
A. Yes. He might say something like that. He might have
said it, but I cannot confirm it.

Q. Is that what you feel about hamburgers, that you could get
addicted to them?
A. Well, I do not consider myself, you know, addicted to
anything, frankly; but I enjoy a good hamburger, and
I think McDonald's serves a great hamburger. I certainly
recommend it to anyone. I know that we use nothing but the
best quality ingredients. It is 100 per cent beef. So,
I very strongly recommend, if you want to hamburger
I strongly recommend going to McDonald's. I know exactly
what you are going to get. No matter where you go in the
world, I know you can count on what you get at McDonald's.

Q. But, in terms of enjoying a good hamburger, would you say
that you might get a craving for one from time to time.
A. I certainly get a craving for McDonald's hamburger or
french fries from time to time, certainly.

MR. MORRIS: Something you may know nothing about it, but you
might do. About hyperactivity, concerns about
hyperactivity in children?
A. What is the word again?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Hyperactivity.
A. Hyperactivity.
