Day 007 - 06 Jul 94 - Page 57

MISS STEEL: That is right. People keep fridges for a long
2 time, do they not? Also, I believe it is now possible to
reclaim the blowing agents from fridges and re-use them?
3 A. It now very well could be. Can I make one additional
point? The home refrigerator is not the only refrigerator
4 though, as we were talking before. So I was not trying to
equate complete CFC refrigerant use on page 35 to that of
5 home refrigerators on page 37 because, as we have
discussed, there are institutional food processing uses
6 for refrigerants.
7 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where the escape is simultaneous with the
use, you mean, or more or less?
8 A. It is difficult to say when it would escape. That is
why I was trying to put it in terms of sales in 34 and 35
9 because it is difficult to say what would have been
released.
10
MISS STEEL: But industrial refrigerators also would be used
11 for quite a number of years before they were disposed of?
A. You would think so -- I am not certain though.
12
Q. I mean, it is going to affect the total used; it is not
13 just the home refrigerators that it affects, is it?
A. No matter how long the refrigerant is in the
14 refrigerators, wherever they maybe, would not impact the
total annual sales that are reflected by the industry.
15 I mean, no matter where they sold into, they did sell into
their market, no matter how long it lasts, that was still
16 their annual sales for that year, yes.
17 Q. I am not clear that is what your figures are saying,
because I asked you about the three pounds of CFCs per
18 refrigerator?
A. Yes.
19
Q. Those were the figures that you said you got from them and
20 -----
A. Which may be true. There maybe three pounds of
21 refrigerant in a refrigerator. That is not my area of
expertise, however, so I am not sure, and yet I was
22 recording here.
23 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can we look at page 38, the fourth blob on
that page, where you say it will take McDonald's so many
24 years of manufacturing foam to have the same environmental
impact. Might that need some modification in the light of
25 this point?
26 What you are really saying is the potential for release is
this amount in refrigerants, this amount in blowing
27 agents, this amount in solvents and so on, is that right,
or is that over-simplifying the matter?
28 A. Let me look through here for a recall because I think
that is the only place that I could have gotten the auto
29 numbers from is from that section. It looks like I may
have been making that assumption because it does not --
30 I am trying to see if I broke out autos in the previous
annual sales documents. It does not appear as I did.
