Day 020 - 28 Jul 94 - Page 64

1 question you were asked for?
              A. If you want an approximate number of how many pigs
2 I may have seen in the case of stunning and slaughter, it
would have been in the order of 70, that sort of number.
     3
MS. STEEL: OK. I just want to come back on what Mr. Rampton
4 said. Just because he does not understand what I am
getting does not mean that there is not something there.
     5
MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, my interpretation -----
     6
MS. STEEL: That was not the point I was trying to get to.
     7
MR. JUSTICE BELL: My interpretation of that was that you asked
8 a question a little time ago as to how many pigs he saw
slaughtered, and Dr. Gregory was unable to answer.
9 Mr. Rampton has drawn attention to a figure in his report
which might have led him to some kind of estimate in
10 answer to your earlier question.

11 MS. STEEL: That is based on the assumption that that was what
I was trying to get at.
    12
         MR. JUSTICE BELL: No.
    13
MS. STEEL: OK. I will ask what I am trying to get at.
    14
MR. JUSTICE BELL: You asked the question as to how many pigs
    15 he saw slaughtered.

16 MS. STEEL: No, I did go on to ask how many were slaughtered
during the time he was there.
    17
         MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.
    18
MS. STEEL: There was a reason for that. It is not directly
19 related to the figures given by the company, about how
              many were killed per hour.
    20
MR. JUSTICE BELL: This is turning into a rather arid
21 argument. What I would like to know, since you were asked
how many were slaughtered while you were there and you
22 felt unable to give an answer to that, does the rate at
which the pigs were being killed of which you have now
23 been reminded in your statement, help you to answer that
earlier question or not within very approximate bounds?
24 A. Yes, I had that figure in mind anyway. I added that
I may have observed the stunning or slaughter acts on
    25 about, about, 70 pigs.

26 MS. STEEL: Do you think many more than that would have gone
through during the time when you were in that stunning and
    27 slaughter area?
              A. Certainly, because some of the time I was examining
    28 equipment or facility.

29 Q. Right, but you have no idea of the total number that went
through in the time you were there?
30 A. No, I do not. I may well have been -- no. I have no
reason to believe that it was markedly different from the
