Day 133 - 12 Jun 95 - Page 30

Q. That being so, would that be an area where you would work
to see that people were better aware or that better
promotional opportunities were available; is that how you
would react?
A. Yes, that is right. We would identify if we were more
at variance there and try to look at reasons why.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I may have had the answer to this already,
Mr. Rampton, but this is McDonald's own restaurants rather
than franchisees, is it?

MR. RAMPTON: Yes, my Lord. It says McOpCo which I think is
American company owned. Is that right?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I see, that is what that means, is it?

MR. RAMPTON: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: McDonald's operated companies, or something,
is it?
A. Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: Something like that. (To the witness): Pausing
there and out of what his Lordship said, do the licensees
do anything like this?
A. Yes, they can do. They can use the same survey that we
use -- and many of them to do.

Q. Do they feed their information into the Company or do they
just use it for their own purposes, if they do it?
A. They use it for their own purposes, but they also do
let us have a copy. It comes through us when they do it.

Q. Have you seen the sort of information, the sort of results,
that licensees have obtained for using these surveys?
A. Yes.

Q. Do they differ greatly or not from your own results?
A. No, they are on broadly the same lines, I would say.

Q. No. 4 is: "Pay increases", "About what I expected". There
you outscore the international norm by 9 per cent, but you
only got 48 per cent of those interviewed who agreed that
the pay increases were above what they expected. 25
disagreed and 27 per cent did not express a view; do you
see that?
A. Yes.

Q. Given that you only got a 48 per cent positive response in
relation to expectations of pay increases, is that
something about which you would be concerned?
A. Yes. Again it is something that we have had to look at
and explore further.

Q. I have taken that block as an example, Ms. Mead; others can
ask questions about it if they are interested. Over the
page we see a summary of the responses in block form for
each of the main categories, do we not?
A. Yes.
