Day 033 - 10 Oct 94 - Page 38
paragraph on page 3.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I have to say this: I am looking at
Dr. Barnard's response in his second statement to
Professor Keen's original statement in which Professor
Keen, in common with other commentators, denies any
dietary relationship between type 1 diabetes -- sorry, any
relationship between diet and type 1 diabetes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which page are you on?

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I am not looking at Dr. Keen's
statement. I am looking at the third page of
Dr. Barnard's second statement. His commentary on
Dr. Keen's statement, which runs through, I think, to the
middle of page 4, contains no indication that he disputes
Professor Keen's assertion that there is no dietary
relationship with type 1 diabetes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What he says is: "The likeliest initiating
mechanism is viral infection possibly with a specific
strain of the coxsackie virus and it has recently been
suggested that consumption of cows' milk in the first
three or four months of neonatal life may play a role.
There is no other evidence to suggest that the composition
of the diet plays a role in triggering the appearance of
this type of diabetes".

MR. RAMPTON: Exactly.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I had not thought that cows milk in the
first three or four months in the neonatal life, even were
that so, had any relevance to the sort of dietary factors
we are considering in this case.

MR. RAMPTON: I would respectfully agree because I do not know
of any suggestion that mothers of very small babies take
them into McDonald's and feed them on milkshakes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Has there been any -----

MR. MORRIS: The only reason that we are raising it is because
Professor Keen did allude to that and I wanted to see if
Dr. Barnard agreed with that suggestion.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: Which may, although it does not have direct
relevance to McDonald's foods, it is just another
indication between overall dietary factors in disease.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If that is all Dr. Barnard is going to say,
so be it. Perhaps we had better hear the answer. If he
is going to suggest that dietary factors apart from cows
milk in the first three or months four months -- you can
miss out the word "neonatal" -- of life play a role, then
it seems to me this is a completely new factor. But, let
us hear the answer of Dr. Barnard.

MR. MORRIS: Just on that subject, what is your comment on
