Day 081 - 31 Jan 95 - Page 53

that meant it was something that was asked, so I do not
know whether that meant the Nuggets themselves or the lumps
of meat that go to make the Nuggets.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know the answer to that?

MR. MORRIS: Well, the impression I got is that it was one in
four of the samples, therefore one in four by extension of
       the whole.

MS. STEEL: I do not know what size the sample was, if that is
       what you were asking.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. The question is whether Mr. North
actually -- could you just ask him? Why not have Mr. North
       come and sit behind you?

MR. MORRIS: He has to leave in five minutes.

MS. STEEL: The question was asked about the meat. Mr. North
asked about what the extrapolated figures were for the
salmonella contamination of the meat, so I presume it is
the meat before -- the test before the Nuggets themselves
are made, but it is likely to be the same as for the
       Nuggets anyway.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The meat ground down or whatever they do to
       it but before actually formed?

MS. STEEL: Stripped off of the bones and all that kind of thing
I think, before the actual Nuggets are formed.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I doubt it is something that Professor
Jackson can deal with anyway. It is very helpful so far as
it because goes it means that at least we know precisely
what it is we are supposed to ask Sun Valley.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Very well.

MS. STEEL: I think we did cover it in that way anyway this
       morning.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Very well. You need not ask any more about
it. Is there anything further you wish to ask Professor
       Jackson?

MS. STEEL: Yes, there is. What is a more common cause of food
poisoning? Is it campylobacter or is it salmonella?
       A. I think at the present time campylobacter accounts for
       more cases.

  Q. Exactly what effect does that have on humans?
       A. What are the symptoms?

  Q. Yes.
       A. Basically, the same as most other food poisoning:
       diarrhoea, sickness.

  Q. What do you know about the transmission of campylobacter?
       A. That it can be spread by food.
