Day 159 - 20 Jul 95 - Page 27

  Q. What sort of age would she be now?
       A. She is about the same age as me, 64.

  Q. Was she hourly paid or salaried?
       A. Hourly paid.

  Q. Hourly paid. Do you know whether or not she had anything
       the matter with her legs?
       A. Well, she had slight verrucous vein legs and she wore
       support stockings, yes.

  Q. Did she carrying on working while she had these support
       stockings?
       A. Oh, yes, she had them all the time she was there, as
       far I know.

  Q. Did she ever tell you that she would liked to retire but
the management would not let her?
       A. Certainly not.

MR. MORRIS: Hold on a second, please. OK. Thank you.

MR. RAMPTON: You are hourly paid. What do you think would
happen if you said to the management tomorrow: "Well, for
one reason or another I am getting on or I am a bit tired
or my husband is making a fuss; I am not coming back in
tomorrow", do you think that they would try to stop that?
       A. I think they would be upset.

  Q. Yes, but so far as you are concerned, would they have any
power, do you think, to stop you just staying at home?
       A. No, certainly not, no.

  Q. Do you remember during your time that one of the managers
       was called Tony Giardina?
       A. Oh, yes, certainly.

  Q. I think it was for about two and a bit years in the
       mid-1980s; do you remember him?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Young, Italian, quite small?
       A. That is right, yes.

  Q. Can you remember anything about him as a Manager?
       A. What I noticed, he is a very quiet person.

  Q. Quiet?
       A. Yes, he never sort of raised his voice or anything like
that. If he had anything to say with you, he would take
you round the back. He would never shout in front of the
       customer or anything like that.

  Q. So far as you can remember, do you think that the store ran
       efficiently while ---
       A. Very well, yes.

  Q. -- he was Manager?
       A. Very well, yes, I would say.
