Day 175 - 18 Oct 95 - Page 43
about a lot of other things?
A. We were not supposed to, but some people did discuss
their pay.

Q. In some sense it was a promotion, would you agree?
A. I think McDonald's would say it was, yes.

Q. I am asking you whether you agree. I am not interested in
what McDonald's ----
A. I would say it probably was not.

Q. Why would you say that?
A. Because you could have been fulfilling the same tasks
whether you were a crew member, an ordinary crew member or
a training squad member. It would depend on how the
Managers perceived you and what they felt you were capable
of I suppose.

Q. Are you telling us then, Mr. Whittle, that when you were in
the training squad you did not train anybody?
A. I did, but so did people who were not in the training
squad.

Q. You did train people?
A. That is what I just said, yes.

Q. You did. Did you discharge that responsibility in a
responsible way, do you think?
A. I hope so. I tried to.

Q. Have you got your copy of your first statement there in
front of you?
A. Yes, I have.

Q. In the second paragraph -- my Lord, I have actually
numbered the paragraphs; I do not know if anybody else has
-- tell me, Mr. Whittle, if I am reading the wrong
paragraph but I think it is the second one: "When
interviewed for the job I was advised that McDonald's did
not recognise trade unions as all problems were resolved on
an individual basis", right?
A. Yes.

Q. When you saw Ms. Steel before lunch time you said, told her
something like this, that the Manager said to you, "We do
not have unions here because we do not need them"; is that
right? I am reading from her note. Is that what you said
to her?
A. Yes, I think that is what I said.

Q. Is this meant to mean, Mr. Whittle, that the Manager
volunteered this information about trade unions?
A. That is what happened.

Q. You went for an interview and the Manager, out of the clear
blue sky, said to you, "We do not have unions here because
we do not need them"?
A. That is right.

Q. Had you indicated any interest in trade unions?
