Day 195 - 04 Dec 95 - Page 40
with NACRO on a community project and a six-month temporary
job as a financial adviser after that before I took a job
at McDonald's.

Q. There is a reason for my question. I am not prying into
your personal life, but had you got married in the
meantime?
A. Yes, that is right.

Q. Were you married before you started working for McDonald's?
A. Yes.

Q. When did you get married, how long before?
A. 1982.

Q. Had you any children when you started working for
McDonald's?
A. No.

Q. Did your wife work?
A. No, not at the time.

Q. Am I right then that when you started working for
McDonald's you might have been in need of money?
A. That is right, that is correct.

Q. Is that the reason why you were willing to work long hours?
A. I would have liked to earn more money, yes, but not
necessarily the hours that McDonald's dictated to me.
I would have liked to do long hours, yes.

Q. You were willing to work the close as often as you did
because the rate that you were paid at McDonald's was
higher than for any of the other shifts?
A. I would have done long shifts to earn the money because
the wage was so low that I would have had to work long
hours to earn a decent or relatively decent money, yes.

Q. The late shift, the night shift, the close shift, call it
what you like, was more highly paid than the earlier ones,
was it not?
A. Yes, but I would have preferred not to do them because
my wife at the time was alone at home, and the area that we
were living in was not particularly safe. So I would have
preferred to be at home.

Q. I understand, but it was your choice to do them, was it
not?
A. If I was given a choice, I would have probably done
them every now and then -- not as regularly as I did.

Q. Who deprived you of the choice to do different hours,
day-time hours?
A. Any Manager which was on the night shift when these
closes were happening, basically, if they said to you: "Do
the all night close because we are expecting a visit", you
would have had to do it.

Q. You worked the close far more often than was required by
the visits of a Supervisor?
