Day 037 - 14 Oct 94 - Page 53

advertisement for the Mega Mac. I have not done any
analyses for the three extra value meals.

  Q. These were all at Baker Street store?
       A. That is right, yes. But, you know, my, essentially,
the same reservations would apply to those. Finally, just
for the sake of completeness, picture 5 is an attempted
photograph of McDonald's menu which is not particularly
easy to read and I will not refer to it.

  Q. Maybe we can move on from those details. Might it be
possible just to have a five-minute break now, then we
will see if we have any further questions?

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

                           (Short Adjournment)

MR. MORRIS: Just one final question. It is something I picked
       up off the floor yesterday or the day before or something;
it is a promotion on the back of a cinema ticket. I did
not photocopy the cinema ticket, but I will show
Mr. Rampton the actual document if that can be given to
the witness. (Handed) This is, I believe, and I have seen
personally a number of promotions where McDonald's food is
given away free or reduced as part of some other cinema
       ticket or whatever?
       A. Co-operative promotions.

  Q. Or prizes or whatever?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is that something that is quite a standard?
       A. Very much so.

  Q. A standard promotional exercise?
       A. Yes, it is a good promotional technique.

  Q. This particular meal they are offering, do you have any
comments about -- you have not seen this before, have
       you?
       A. No, I have never seen this, no.

  Q. Have you any comment about the actual meal or the
promotion, the actual food they are promoting, with this
       exercise?
       A. Well, again it seems to be redefining, reinterpreting
the word "meal". This, unfortunately, would negative
health implications; hamburger, regular french fries and a
regular size soft drink -- sadly excluding orange juice
which might give it some virtue -- is not a healthy meal.
       I think we need -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What is your criticism of using the word
"meal"? You may say it is not healthy but if I have a
sandwich for lunch, that is my lunch and, therefore, it is
a meal; whatever is in the middle of the sandwich, that is
       my lunch?
       A. Yes.
