Day 093 - 28 Feb 95 - Page 36
supplier because of animal welfare concerns?
A. Since I have been with the company and from what I have
heard or seen, I do not know of anybody who is disapproved
because of welfare concerns. I have been asked this
particular case, I have asked at Tyson: "Is there any
reports of our facilities being investigated for
mistreatment of animals or inhumane treatment of animals,
in the history of the plant since 1982?" And he said:
"No".

Q. You asked about that because of this case, did you?
A. That was before I came here, yes.

Q. About the case, because it was relevant to the case you
wanted to know that before you came to give evidence?
A. A specific question, yes, it was.

Q. So has your department ever investigated any incidents at a
supplier's where you were concerned about mistreatment of
animals or welfare considerations?
A. Have we investigated?

Q. Yes.
A. Yes.

Q. Can you give us some examples then?
A. For instance, Doug Gullang, who is one of our -- is the
President of OSI, one of our major suppliers in US and
internationally, I have spoken with him regarding this very
subject about welfare of animals and we had extensive
discussions about that; our policies of what we do ------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, that is not what you were asked about.

MR. MORRIS: Has your department investigated any incidents
where you have heard of something happening or you have
witnessed something happening -- your department, not you
personally necessarily -- you have seen something
happening, you are upset about something, you have
investigated it and tried to see if it could be stopped or
changed?
A. No, we have not.

MS. STEEL: Are you relying entirely on your suppliers to check
out those kinds of things?
A. Not entirely -- mostly, yes.

Q. What is the part then that your department personally
checks out?
A. What department?

Q. Your department. You said "mostly but not entirely", what
part does your department look into?
A. For instance, we look at what I just asked as an
example. I asked: "Are there any times since the plant
was built, are there any incidents relating to the welfare
of animals, mistreatment of animals, that we have been
accused or have been proved as one of the things that we
do". If there is no incidents of reports in the United
States of such a large company -----
