Day 096 - 03 Mar 95 - Page 25
business or were they -----
A. No, they had always been involved in pigs. This was
another -- and that is all they are involved in. They are
not involved in any other meat production whatsoever.

Q. But did you see the old system that they used, the existing
system?
A. What they had done, so I am told, some of the farms
that are around this system that built up overall. We did
not see that.

Q. But they informed you that the system they were introducing
was an improvement in terms of, well, they were asking you
about welfare advice?
A. Yes.

Q. So the system that they were working on was something they
thought was an improvement on the previous systems they had
been using?
A. No, they were determined, basically, to produce pigs in
the best possible conditions in America, basically. That
is what they had us there for.

MR. MORRIS: They talked about the existing conditions to you,
yes?
A. They took us completely to a brand new total outfit of
pig production, meat production -- the whole thing all on
one large site.

Q. This is the new one that started operation?
A. Yes.

Q. But did they talk about the existing conditions -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Those were the existing conditions by then.
You want to be asking about what happened two or three
years before.

MR. MORRIS: That plant is now in operation, is it?
A. Yes.

Q. I am sorry. I thought it was about to come on ----
A. No, that started last October. We were there last May.

Q. Did they say ---

MR. JUSTICE BELL: This is the new plant in operation.

MR. MORRIS: --"This is this and this is was it was like a year
ago" or whatever?
A. No, I did not know anything about what they were up to
in the past.

Q. So you do not know if it is an improvement then?
A. We were making a judgment of what is, not what was.

Q. So have you seen any other working pig farms in the
States?
A. No.
