Day 138 - 20 Jun 95 - Page 41
A. Yes, they did.

Q. Did they bring anybody else with them?
A. Yes about 200 to 300 people.

Q. 200 to 300 people identifiable as union members or not?
A. Yes, they were members of the union who worked at other
places, other establishments.

Q. Tell us please what, was so far as you, Stan Stein, could
you see, were you inside the restaurant?
A. I was inside the restaurant, I was outside the
restaurant, I was in a van at the kerb, I was constantly
moving back and forth.

Q. Tell us from what you could see, what was the demeanor and
attitude of the 200 or so people that turned up with the
union representatives?
A. To me it was frightening, it was a menacing
environment.

Q. Why?
A. Because hidden in their clothing would be, you would
observe it from time to time, sticks, baseball bats or iron
rods.

Q. Iron rods?
A. Yes, and they were hiding them in their coats, or in
their pants, or what have you.

Q. Did this -- I do not know what to call it, a mob, or an
army, or what -- come into the restaurant at all?
A. At certain times during that evening it attempted to
force its way into the restaurant. They also circled the
entire restaurant, blocked the driveways, blocked the
drive-through -- I do not know if that is the same term
here in England.

Q. Yes, it is.
A. The drive-through areas. Essentially that restaurant
was under siege.

Q. What was the reaction of the members of the crew to this
siege?
A. Well, we tried to keep everybody calm, and the union
officials knocked on the door, said who they were,
identified themselves. We knew who they were.

Q. They were admitted, were they?
A. They were admitted, yes. We hoped that, frankly, by
admitting them, and let them say whatever they wanted to
say to the crew, and let whatever happened happen, that
that would persuade everybody to not have a major problem.
We were concerned ----

Q. What happened when they came into the restaurant?
A. When they came into the restaurant they introduced
themselves and they asked for an opportunity to speak to
the crew.
