Day 272 - 02 Jul 96 - Page 57

"Saturday the 21st October, the second anti-McDonald's
fayre. Last year - that is 1988 - as part of the
anti-McDonald's campaign Greenpeace London organised the
world's first anti-McDonald's fayre in London. The event
was a huge success".

And then there is a bit about how many different groups
there are, organic beer and vegetarian food. And if you
look at the next paragraph it says:

"About fifteen hundred people attended the fayre and we
managed to cover our costs, which is amazing considering we
made no entrance charge. We were so pleased with the whole
event that we have decided to repeat it this year and make
it even bigger and better."

Now, assuming the figure of fifteen hundred to be about
right for 1988, can you remember how many people, roughly
speaking, members of the public I mean or sympathetic
members of other groups, attended the 1989 fayre?
A. I would say about two thousand.

Q. And that is, perhaps, not quite as good as you hoped for,
but certainly better than '88, was it not?
A. Yes.

Q. You were hoping for an increase on fifteen hundred, were
you not?
A. We were hoping to attract more people to an event we
had organised who would then have a chance to see the
stalls and videos and workshops available on the day, yes,
get something out of it.

Q. You still persist in saying that at the 1989 world
anti-McDonald's action day East Finchley on the 16th
October 1989, there really were not enough copies of the
fact sheet available for you to take them along and
distribute them to members of the public. Is that right?
A. Well, it had been decided way back in 1987 that the
fact sheet would not be handed out in the streets in bulk.

Q. Because there were not enough of them?
A. Because there were not enough of them and also because
it was considered a waste that people would pick it up and
may look at it briefly and then throw it away.

Q. Throw it away, yes?
A. That is why the A5 leaflet was published. Less
wasteful, less costly to print.

Q. Well then, can we have a look at tab 39 please --

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will take a five-minute break there, Mr.
Rampton.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I would quite like to finish this point,
if I may, before the break.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, do then.
