Day 086 - 09 Feb 95 - Page 60

       A. I have not heard cysts I am afraid.

  Q. What steps have you or your department taken in response to
trying to make sure this kind of thing does not happen
       again?
       A. Bones in chickens?

  Q. Any foreign object -- well, any foreign object that related
to something that had not come from the manufacturer,
something that was -- well, what is your area of
responsibility in this field? Are you responsible for
things like bones or would that not be your field?
       A. It would come through the Customer Services Department,
but a bone would go to the QA Department because it is
likely that if it did come into the sandwich it would have
been a production problem rather than a restaurant problem.

  Q. What steps have you taken in relation to foreign objects
that might have got in in the stores?
       A. Well, I think when we try to establish whether or not
it was -- to get the item to see whether or not it is
likely that it could have got into the product within the
restaurant, rather than being put there afterwards which
unfortunately happens on some occasions, and then the item
would be identified. Again QA normally do that through
laboratories that work for them and the incident is
investigated. The people that do this investigation are
the Regional Health and Safety Officers who report to Jill
       Barnes.

  Q. What percentage of the complaints relate to objects that
have got in in the stores?
       A. Well, of total complaints or of complaints that are to
       do with foreign objects?

  Q. Complaints about foreign objects.
       A. A small percentage of them are due to something in the
       restaurant.

  Q. 5 per cent, 10 per cent?
       A. I would guess somewhere 5 per cent or below. The
majority of them are, when it is a foreign object it is a
bone or I think I mentioned the other day the veterinary
dye that is stamped on the beef, that is a very common one
that would come through and that is easily identified.

  Q. What are the ones that are from the store?
       A. Occasionally you will get a hair in the product. In
the past I think we had problems with like jewellery. We
have taken we have taken steps that the crew are not wear
to wear jewellery in restaurants to try to cut that down.
I do not think -- sorry.

  Q. Are plasters sometimes a problem or have they been?
       A. I have heard of a plaster, yes.

  Q. Just one?
       A. I cannot specify. I am not sure if it is a
recollection from an article in The Sun that a plaster was
in there. I have heard of plasters being alleged to have
