Day 158 - 19 Jul 95 - Page 50

       fold.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: On this scale my Lord, seven centimetres equals
800 kilometres, so that nine centimetres equals just over
       1,000 kilometres. So I have marked a circumference --
I hope it is in blue -- 1028 kilometres from Barretos which
is slightly generous, given that Lord Vesty said all the
areas are well within 1,000 kilometre of Barretos. So one
can see, even on that evidence, how far from any actual
rain forest those grazing areas might be.

My Lord, that is all I say about Vesty because, as I said a
moment ago, it does, I would submit, amount to absolutely
nothing as an allegation against McDonald's in relation to
       destruction of the environment.

My Lord, much more important, of course, are McDonald's
sources for their habitual day-to-day consumption of beef
in Brazil itself. For that purpose, I have used the Braslo
map. The actual plants which make the patties, we are
told, are in Sao Paulo. The processing plants, by which
one might assume one certainly includes slaughtering, are
at four places, going from the top just underneath
       "Brazilia" a place called Goiania.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where is the information for this?

MR. RAMPTON: It is on the map, my Lord.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I appreciate that. Where does that come
       from?

MR. RAMPTON: No, I am sorry, it is on the Braslo map.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I appreciate that, but where do you get that
       from?

MR. RAMPTON: That, your Lordship will remember,
Dr. Gomez Gonzales was questioned up hill and down vale
about McDonald's sources of supply in Brazil. He said, if
your Lordship recalls, that he had seen a map in Braslo's
premises in Sao Paulo which showed exactly where the
rain forest finished and where Braslo sources of supply
were situated. He was asked by your Lordship, I think, or
be me or the Defendants if he could obtain copy of that
       map.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It had the key on it, did it? The map when
it came had the key on it?

MR. RAMPTON: Yes, it has always had the key on it, yes. That
is what this map is. It is a copy of the Braslo map.

MR. MORRIS: Can I just say actually, the map that I have seems
to have a date underneath the legend, but it is
unreadable. I do not know if someone has the original?

MR. RAMPTON: No, I certainly have not got the original.
