Day 018 - 26 Jul 94 - Page 34
1 A. Yes.
2 Q. Did you see the pigs being transported?
A. No.
3
Q. Did you see them arriving?
4 A. I saw them being unloaded.
5 Q. Unloaded?
A. Yes.
6
Q. What sort of transport did they arrive in, or were they
7 unloaded from, I should say?
A. I saw one type which was -- is it a contractor or
8 company owned -----
9 Q. I cannot tell you that.
A. I am just looking. It was a contractor vehicle.
10
Q. Was it?
11 A. Yes, page 8, 234.
12 Q. You are quite right. I missed that. That did not have
hydraulic lifts in it?
13 A. No, it did not.
14 Q. I believe you were told, and again we must get this
confirmed by Mr. Bowes, that the company's vehicles do
15 have decks which are hydraulically lifted?
A. I believe that is correct.
16
Q. Would that make the getting of the pigs in and out of the
17 trucks easier?
A. It would, and be less stressful to the animal as well.
18
Q. I should ask this: Do pigs die in transit as chickens do?
19 A. Yes.
20 Q. In similar sorts of numbers or less so?
A. Less so.
21
Q. What is the most recent national estimate for mortality
22 during transporting pigs?
A. One estimate, I recall -- I am not sure whether it is
23 a most recent one -- would be .07 per cent. Hold on, let
me just check -- no, it was -- I am just trying to recall
24 my memory banks.
25 Q. You do not have to because it is ----
A. .01 to .02 per cent, if I remember correctly, but I am
26 open to correction on that.
27 Q. Perhaps I can help you?
A. Please do.
28
Q. Paragraph 5 on page 8 V?
29 A. Yes.
30 Q. You tell us?
A. Yes. I beg your pardon, .02 per cent.
