MR. JUSTICE BELL: Point the witness at that particular ----

MS. STEEL: How did you do that, Mr. Preston?
       A. How did I do the setting?

  Q. Trying to find out who you felt was responsible for the
       leaflet?
       A. I discussed with Sid Nicholson the need to attend these
public meetings you spoke of in your documents. I told him
that people should be attending those meetings, whatever
these people do, whatever they can find out, should be
conducted in a proper, legal, constructive manner, but
I fully intended to stop the further publication of this
       document.

  Q. And telling them they should attend meetings, did you also
tell them that they should copy any letters that were sent
to the group for your files?
       A. I gave one instruction, and one instruction alone:
Make anything and everything the people do totally legal.
       That was it.

  Q. But you did not bother to check up on whether everything
       they were doing was legal?
       A. I believe it was. If Mr. Nicholson's project was that,
then I am sure he looked after it.

  Q. You did not ask Mr. Nicholson about whether or not the
infiltrators that had been attending meetings had been
stealing letters that were sent to the group?
       A. Ms. Steel, I left the project with Mr. Nicholson. He
was given his instruction by me to do it in a correct,
proper and legal manner and I left it at that.

  Q. You did not check up on what he was doing and what the
       private investigators were doing?
       A. No, I did not.

  Q. If you could get out Publication Bundle 2, yellow 2.
       A. OK.

  Q. Could you turn to tab 5, please, which is the statement of
Alan Clare who is one of the private investigators hired on
       your behalf.

If you turn to page 70, this is the tale end of notes from
1st March 1990, a meeting of London Greenpeace at 5
Caledonian Road and on this page, it says:

"Meeting:: Went through all the post. Lots of letters
from all over the world regarding anti-McDonald's. They
all want more information and updated info re
anti-McDonald's" -- and then in brackets he has written
"(letters taken to be copied for reference)".

       Have you seen that before?
       A. No.

  Q. Does it concern you that a private investigator hired on
