Day 207 - 23 Jan 96 - Page 32

  Q. It is quite a serious complaint, is it not?
       A. It is a complaint that I would worry about, yes,
       if ------

  Q. Do you remember any action being taken over that complaint?
       A. Well, I do not ------

  Q. To investigate it or -----
       A. I do not remember the original complaint and the
substance of it, and I do not know to what extent action
       was taken on it, no.

MR. MORRIS: Do you remember there was a time when all pay
rises, increases, over five pence an hour had to be
authorised by the Manager, Alan Charlesworth?
       A. It says it in the rap session.

  Q. Yes. You recall that, do you?
       A. I think I do, yes. I think there was a period where
       Alan did apply that.

  Q. Right.

MS. STEEL: Then if you turn to page 231, which is the same rap
session under "Performance Reviews", "How is the PR system
administered?" Answer: "Not being done. Some are up to
18 months overdue". Then "Frequency (every four months)?"
The answer is, "Some are being forged". Do you remember
       that complaint?
       A. No, I do not.

  Q. Then if you turn to the rap session of 24th February 1995
on pages 241 and 243, they both say, "The performance
reviews are behind, but there is some effort being made to
sort it out", although it does not say to what extent.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, might the witness be given time to read
the whole of that, save me coming back to it in
       re-examination?

MS. STEEL: They are both the same.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let me just look. 241 -- where are you?

MS. STEEL: It is the fourth line down, "consistently applied".
Then the second one which says the same is on page 243
under "Performance Reviews" and it says, "Frequency (every
four months). Behind at the moment but efforts are being
made by Managers". Then 2, underneath that, "Accurate
reflection of performance. Pay rises are hard to obtain in
some circumstances". So you had recognised that there was
still a problem with performance reviews at this time?
       A. There are people there, as it says, who state they have
had problems with their performance reviews.

  Q. If you turn to page 254 which is the performance review of
       26th September 1995?
       A. 25?
