Day 090 - 16 Feb 95 - Page 15

  Q. So, sometimes you do not bother checking whether the first
lot have been gassed properly until after you have done the
       second lot?
       A. No, we always check them.

  Q. You always check them?
       A. We always do that each time.

  Q. So why did you mention that it takes no more than a minute
       to check through 200 chicks?
       A. Because I just said that that is the time it takes to
       check 200 chicks.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: My recollection it was about 200 that might
be found to be dead rather ---
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- qualify for being killed?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Then without being asked in what size batches you did them,
you were asked how long it would take to sort through 200
       and you gave an answer?
       A. That is what I meant and what I meant -----

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, that is right. I am looking at the
       relevant page of the transcript.

THE WITNESS: What I meant yesterday was that if the day's total
is 200, we would probably do a batch after three or four
hours' hatching and then another batch after the second
       period.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You check each batch?
       A. We check each batch.

  Q. After the gasing?
       A. That is correct.

MS. STEEL: How often does gasing have to be done again?
       A. In my experience, that is very rare because the system
has been well tried. We have used it for many years and it
       works very effectively.

  Q. So what are we talking about, once a month?
       A. I honestly could not answer that. I should think it is
very rare -- perhaps once a month.

  Q. How do you check that all the chicks have been killed?
       A. With 100 chicks, they are simply taken out of the bag
on to a tray before they would go to the disposal, and at
that point it is very easy to see if there is any movement,
in which case if there is then the whole batch would be
       done again.

  Q. So it is just based on movement purely?
       A. That is correct.

MS. STEEL: Can I ask a legal question?
