  Q. Would they need the same qualifications as an OVS?
       A. No.

  Q. What qualifications do they need?
       A. The meat inspector, if they are just meat inspectors,
they will normally do a one or a two-year meat inspection
course run by one of the professional bodies.

  Q. On page 6 of the statement, the second to last paragraph,
you have mentioned about water sprays promoting a calming
effect on the animals. We were told by Mr. Walker that the
animals were sprayed to prevent dust contamination. The
reason that you have given there is that what you were told
       by the -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I just find it, page 6?

MS. STEEL: Yes, the second to last paragraph.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: The reason that you have given there, is that what
you were told by the slaughterhouse or is that your -----
       A. No, there are various effects of spraying with water.
Obviously, it will keep dust down and, to some extent, it
will remove contamination from the surface of the pigs but
it does have a calming influence on them as well.

  Q. In the final paragraph you have mentioned about the waste
material being carried away to central points. Do you know
what happened to the waste material?
       A. Speaking from memory, I know it was removed from the
site. I have an idea that it was removed to somewhere
       adjacent, although I cannot recall.

  Q. You do not know what happened to it?
       A. I remember being told but I cannot actually
remember -- no, I cannot remember where it went to.

  Q. What is the usual thing that happens then, do you know, to
       that kind of waste?
       A. The waste tends to get separated. The solid waste
would go into some sort of store and, perhaps, be taken
away by lorry. Blood might be put into a tank for removal
separately. Liquid waste might go into a drain or into
       some sort of treatment facility.

  Q. Sometimes it is sprayed on farm land, is that fair to say?
       A. The manure might be sprayed on farm land.

  Q. And other parts of the slaughterhouse waste?
       A. Well, not generally, without some form of cleaning.

  Q. When you say "waste material" are you just talking about
manure or are you talking about other things as well?
       A. I am talking about the manure, the non-edible
by-products, blood, and the waste water from the operation.
