Day 066 - 14 Dec 94 - Page 73
A. I have seen it.

Q. Does that strike you as humane?
A. To.

Q. Well then, Dr. Gomez Gonzales, one final thing, a point of
mere detail. My Lord, this is some figures attached to
Dr. Gomez Gonzales' third statement which is at tab 4 of
yellow bundle IX. Can you find IX there? It is called
Rearing and Slaughter?
A. Yes.

Q. At tab 4 you will find the third statement you made for the
purpose of these proceedings. In paragraph 2 you deal with
antibiotics and growth promoters. In paragraph 3 you deal
with Mr. McDonald. In paragraph 4 you deal with cattle
products and then in paragraph 5 you refer to some figures
that you obtained for the consumption of beef by McDonald's
in the USA first of all, I think it is, and then for the
worldwide consumption of beef by all the people in the
world. I hope I have that right?
A. That is correct.

MR. MORRIS: Mine is totally unreadable. I do not know if that
is the same with everyone?

MR. RAMPTON: We will try to get better copies. Mine is not
brilliant I have to say. I am interested, Dr. Gomez
Gonzales, in the figures for beef simply because there is
an allegation in this case that McDonald's use of beef
makes a significant contribution to the methane content to
the troposphere. Are you conscious of that allegation?
A. Yes, I am.

Q. I would like you to look at the first document. It is
headed 1990 'Gee Whiz' Numbers?
A. Yes.

Q. Which presumably means when people look at them people go
"Gee Whiz! isn't that a lot", is that right?
A. Yes, that is correct.

Q. Look at the last column of figures in the top section which
is British beef, for 1990 the total amount of beef used by
McDonald's, and these I think are in pounds, are they not?
A. That is correct.

Q. I cannot read the first one. Is it 497 or 407? .

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where are you, Mr. Rampton?

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, the first section in the first appendix.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: The fourth line "Total beef pounds".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 479,072,280 or something.

MR. RAMPTON: That is 1980 I think.
