1 packaging wherever possible and reliable". What are the
restrictions which are imposed on you by regulation in
2 relation to food contact and package?
              A. There are very strict guidelines published by the FDA,
3 Food and Drug Administration, in the United States with
the use of recycled paper and food packaging; food
4 packaging, again, that comes into direct contact,
continual contact with food. Direct packaging I would
5 label as wraps and cups; indirect is bags, napkins, tray
liners, things that are not intended to hold the product
     6 itself.

7 In the FDA guidelines, allow the use of recycled paper.
However, they say that it is the responsibility of the
8 suppliers to ensure that it is free of anything poisonous
and deleterious. This onus, this responsibility, is on
9 the suppliers, and I would say on McDonald's, to make sure
              of this.
    10
In terms of recycled paper history, there has not been
11 better assurance from our suppliers until very recently.
As we see in our study here, we studied this very
12 progressively. Just in the last year now, we are starting
to see some break-throughs in using post-consumer material
    13 in direct food packaging.

14 Q. So when we look to the Fairfax County report in relation
to colonies of bacteria, safety and health of the customer
    15 is a consideration?
              A. It is a No.1 consideration.
    16
         Q. Thank you. Something else I want to ask you about. Only
17 two more things and I promise to finish by quarter past 4
so far as I am concerned. Have you in the witness box a
18 copy of this thing, the leaflet complained?
              A. Yes.
    19
MR. MORRIS: Are we putting the other files away?
    20
MR. RAMPTON: No, you are going to need V still.
    21
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do we not need IV?
    22
MR. RAMPTON: I think I have finished with IV, my Lord. Have
    23 you got that?
              A. Yes.
    24
         Q. Have you read it before?
    25 A. Yes.

26 Q. I am not going to read out any large part of this. I just
want to draw your attention to one particular part of it,
27 because it concerns you or your evidence. On the third
page under the headings "McDisease", "McProfit",
28 "McDeadly" "McHunger", there is a box which says: "Fifty
acres every minute". Then a subheading: "Why is it wrong
29 for McDonald's destroy rainforests?" Can I ask you this,
Mr. Langert, do you travel about the world in the course
    30 of your duties?
              A. Yes.
