Day 202 - 11 Jan 96 - Page 44

       define the pay periods summary; daily labour summary;
weekly labour -- I think the next three would probably be
the same, apart from the period of time -- crew and
building, I have an idea about that, as with young persons
       and building, I could give you an answer on that;
exceptions. Yes, looking down at most of them, I could
probably understand what they are talking about.

  Q. No, I just wanted to know how often management would be
expected to produce reports such as these, either for use
at store level or for sending up to Head Office?
       A. I think obviously the (3) -- the answers in the (3) and
       (4) in that they could be produced daily or weekly, but on
a pay period, which is a fortnight, I guess that was one
that must be produced, really, because that would tally
with the payroll that would come back to the restaurant.
But whether you produce them or not, I guess the
information stays within there, so it could be accessed at
       any particular time.

  Q. Right, OK. I do not think I have anything further.

  MR. MORRIS: No further questions.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I have no re-examination, but there is
one matter of fact, my Lord, which maybe I can draw
attention to now save coming back to it later. Your
Lordship put it to the witness that he became Senior
Supervisor at the same date that Mr. Coton did.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is wrong, is it?

MR. RAMPTON: It is wrong. It is a year out, in fact.
Mr. Coton became Manager at the beginning of August 1987.
I am only going by the records. Mr. Atherton, Senior
Supervisor at the end of August 1988.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 22nd August 1988.

MR. RAMPTON: That is right. It is virtually a year later.

MR. JUSTICE BELL (To the witness): So it was from 22nd August
       1988.
       A. Right.

  Q. It would be then or after that that you first met
       Mr. Coton?
       A. That is right, yes.

  Q. And Mr. Davis?
       A. Yes. I did not know either of them before.

  Q. I just have one matter to ask. Without turning up chapter
and verse, I recollect that last term I got something of a
picture from the performance reviews that the Managers in
stores were being encouraged to bring up people in
management behind them. Was this a time around 1987 when
the stores were being opened with some frequency?
       A. The stores are opening all the time. I think, you
know, there was two stores opened, the period that we
