Day 276 - 09 Jul 96 - Page 33

and after I was told this I went into the store in Wood
Green and there were at least 100 of them out on the
shelves. Well, there was a big wadge of them, obviously I
did not count them. I took a handful of them and that was
the first time that I got a copy of this leaflet. I also,
a couple of days later, went into the Tottenham McDonald's
and they were out on the display board in Tottenham as
well. And various other people have told me that they have
seen them and got copies of them from other stores, where
they were out on display on the notice boards.

There is one that appears in tab 12. This copy was
given to us by M. Raynor, who was picketing the Hounslow
store, and the staff then came out and started handing out
these leaflets to members of the public on the date that is
       there, 9th July 1994.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which store was that?
       A. The Hounslow store.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, that does sound rather to me like
       hearsay, I am afraid.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, it may be, but I am just going to sort
       that out.

MR. RAMPTON: I quite agree there has been quite a lot of that
but I have not said anything.

MR. MORRIS: I think she said she was prepared to give evidence
       if necessary.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes?
       A. I mean, it is not really worth me going through again
repeating exactly the same points is it?

  Q. No, it is not, there is no need, for instance, to make the
same point about 1984 or several letters, or once you have
said that -- or your reaction to lies, it is just if there
is something about the other documents which is specific to
       them?
       A. Yes, yes, okay. I am just looking through tab 3 to see
if there is anything different in this one. Yes, I think
it is the final page of the tab 3.

MR. MORRIS: Sorry, is this the background briefing?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is libel action background briefing?
       A. The third starred paragraph, "It has also been
suggested that McDonald's has the unfair benefit of legal
advice. The group have long had the informed support of
lawyers and this was formalised with the appointment of a
City law firm and two specialist libel barristers to advise
them." Just, obviously, to say that the only time we were
represented by a City law firm and two libel barristers was
for the appeal in March 1994. We have had informal support
from lawyers, but in terms of legal assistance it has been
pretty sporadic and it depends entirely upon whether or not
there is somebody available, and quite often there is not.
