Day 134 - 13 Jun 95 - Page 69

       A. On the paragraph near the hole punch it is something,
something weekly hours, something below 35. What does that
       say?

MR. RAMPTON: "The average weekly hours were well below 35."
       A. Were well below?

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes.
       A. Does it have a number only in something weeks?

MS. STEEL: Only in eight weeks. You were in the Personnel
       Department at this time, yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Did the Company investigate the report by the Transport and
General Workers Union before sending that letter in reply,
       do you know?
       A. I do not know. I do not know anything about it.

  Q. Would you not expect to have known about it if the Company
did carry out investigations into this?
       A. No, not necessarily.

  Q. Well, they quite serious allegations that the Union were
       making, were they not?
       A. Yes, they are on the face of them, but I would not
necessarily know about this. If I was not dealing with
that restaurant. I do not know whose writing that is on
that, but I do not know anything about it. I did not deal
       with that group of restaurants.

  Q. So when you were first in the Personnel Department you were
only dealing with one area of restaurants?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What area was that?
       A. It differed at different times. I have dealt with
central London, North London, South and South East London,
I have worked in the area in Gravesend or dealt with the
       area of Gravesend at times.

  Q. You do not know where you were working in September, what
area you were covering in September 1987?
       A. I cannot remember but I have said quite clearly I do
not know anything about this and I can assure you I know
       nothing about this.

  Q. You said that the Company had implemented programmes
I think since 1990, although I do not think you gave a
specific year, to bring down the crew turnover. When were
those programmes implemented and what were those
       programmes?
       A. The kind of thing I am referring to is ways of
continuously improving things and that can range from
anything to do with giving different training to managers
to making sure that the way they are conducting performance
reviews is right; giving them training in counselling to
scholarship education programmes, things like that. I can
go on if you wish. Junior business management programme, a
variety of different things that go to making sure that
