Day 014 - 20 Jul 94 - Page 22

1 Q. It is entitled: Dietary Reference Values for Food Energy
and Nutrients for the United Kingdom. It is subtitled:
2 Report of the Panel on Dietary Reference Values of the
Committee on Medical Aspects of Food Policy. It was first
3 published in 1991, as we see from the back of the first
page, the fly leaf. This is the sixth impression that
4 I have with minor amendments and a revised chapter 36,
              1994, right?
5 A. My version is an earlier one.

     6 Q. Is it?
              A. It is the one I had from the beginning.
     7
         Q. I tell you what -----
     8
MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think you should -- is yours the same,
9 Mr. Morris, the sheet before the preface?

10 MR. MORRIS: Yes, first published 1991.

11 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Sixth impression.

12 MR. MORRIS: No, it does not say "sixth impression". It just
              says 1991 on it.
13 A. That is the one I have.

14 MR. MORRIS: I have the same one as you.

15 MR. JUSTICE BELL: "Minor amendments, revised chapter 36". Do
you have that revised chapter 36? Is there nothing under
    16 "first published 1991"?

17 MR. MORRIS: Nothing at all.

18 MR. RAMPTON: I will pass you Mrs. Brinley-Codd's copy. Do
not use that -- I am sure yours is all marked -- just in
19 case there is confusion. Ignore the preface by Sir Donald
Acheson, and turn please to page little roman (iv),
20 "Glossary of Terms and Abbreviations"?
              A. Page?
    21
         Q. Page (iv) has a glossary of abbreviations?
    22 A. Yes.

23 Q. Is it also on your page (iv) in the bottom left-hand
              corner?
    24 A. Yes.

25 Q. "Terms relating to weight measurement" -- we need not read
them out -- "Terms relating to energy." We need not read
26 those out, except for the last one: "PAL - Physical
Activity Level". It is a multiple of BMR, which is Basal
27 Metabolic Rate. "The ratio of overall daily energy
expenditure to BMR. Values range from 1.4 (for a person
28 with light energy expenditure in work who has non-active
leisure pursuits) to 1.9 (for a man in energy-demanding
29 work whose leisure time pursuits are also energy
demanding)." Then "Terms relating to energy and nutrient
30 intakes": "RDI: Recommended Daily Intakes" was the term
used in 1969 or up to 1969?
