Day 204 - 15 Jan 96 - Page 31

MS. STEEL: Well, I do not know about that. It seems the
       first -----

MR. RAMPTON: If one looks at the paragraph immediately above,
       one sees it there.

MS. STEEL: As Supervisor, if this is about you being a
       supervisor ---
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- this would be referring to other stores as well then,
       not just the Colchester store?
       A. If you look at the date of the performance review, this
would be on 10th September, yes. From September onwards,
running up through to Christmas, the volume increases
through half-term, through to Christmas. Looking back on
it, I would say that refers more to increasing your crew
levels steadily up through to the busy Christmas period,
rather than the fact that we were running particularly
tight at that time. It is not necessarily indicative of
       that.

MR. MORRIS: If you go to page 9 -- can I just ask you, before
you look at that: the failure to achieve crew levels that
have been set, the targets that have been set, that would
be an indication of poor management, would it; say, if
Ray Coton was failing to achieve his crew level targets
that had been set for him?
       A. It would be an indication that he had not achieved his
       targets.

  Q. Would that be an indication of poor management?
       A. It depends how off his targets he was really, would it
       not?

  Q. Pardon?
       A. It would depend how far off his targets he was set,
whether it was or not. That is a decision you would have
to make at the time. If he was obviously, you know,
hundreds off his target or 50 his target, then maybe it is
       not necessarily an automatic conclusion.

  Q. Did the crew levels at the -- you had five stores when you
       were Supervisor, did you not?
       A. For a brief period I had five; most of the time I had
       three.

  Q. So, after 18 months as Supervisor, if we go to page 9 --
yes -- 13th March 1989, not just before Christmas?
       A. Yes.

  Q. And, as a Supervisor, you have three of your stores failing
to reach their crew targets quite substantially for all
       stores?
       A. I do not think -- where does it say that?

  Q. In the middle of the page, the sentence before the middle
of the page: "Other areas of concern however include", and
it talks about crew hire and turnover; and then on the
right-hand side it says "target by 1789".
