Day 061 - 05 Dec 94 - Page 59
Q. Why do all these things that are nothing to do with animal
welfare get into the animal welfare policy?
A. Because it is just a summary of that document. If you
need to get into the document in detail, then you would
need to discuss and cross-examine on the document itself
which we do not have here.

Q. This is not an animal welfare policy, is it? It is a piece
of propaganda for you to put your story about where and how
your meat is supplied, whether or not it is to do with
animal welfare?
A. Well, I do repeat hat you should look at the animal
welfare document before you comment further, because there
is a lot more detail in there.

MR. MORRIS: What document are you referring to because I am not
sure if it is the one we have or not?
A. There is an animal welfare beef document that McKey
Foods would have, the hamburger supplier, and also one for
poultry that Sun Valley would have.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think the point which is being made is that
this is McDonald's UK statement of its position. In fact
the index says: "It and its suppliers position on animal
welfare and husbandry".
A. The index says what?

Q. If you look at the front you will see how document one is
described. What is the purpose of that statement? Is that
so that members of the public can see it if they ask for it
or what?
A. Well, you are referring to the letters from suppliers
confirming compliance?

Q. No. If you look at tab 1.
A. Yes.

Q. It has "Animal Welfare and Husbandry - McDonald's
Position"?
A. Yes, right.

Q. Then it has got over the page: "Summary of Supplier
Positions".
A. Yes.

Q. It has got "Beef - McKey" and "Chicken - Sun Valley". What
I am asking at the moment is once printed or word processed
out and photocopied where does it go?
A. Where does this information go?

Q. Yes, where do the sheets of paper go?
A. I am not aware it has gone anywhere.

Q. It would just go in a drawer then? Is it there so that a
member of the public can say "What is McDonald's position
on animal welfare and husbandry", they can be shown the
sheet on page 1, for instance, and if need be the remaining
sheets, or is it in store so that without asking people can
pick them up?
A. If I could ask, because I am really not sure, where
