                     Re-examined by MR. RAMPTON Q.C.

MR. RAMPTON: Just one little question arising out of that.
Mr. Mehigan, when you found out about the dismissals of
Mr. McCann and Mr. Brian subsequently, after they had been
dismissed, did you ever have any sneaking suspicion that
Mr. McCann and Mr. Brian might be right that Mr. Trimble
had dismissed them for union activity; did that ever cross
your mind as a serious possibility?
       A. It crossed my mind that Mr. Trimble was not coming
clean, when he did not refer the first communication he
       got.

  Q. That was not quite my question. Did it ever occur to you
that Mr. Trimble might have dismissed these two for union
       activity in the store?
       A. It might be a possibility.

  Q. Mr. Trimble -- you do not know when he left. If you caught
a manager dismissing an employee for union activity and you
were sure that that is what he had done, what would your
       attitude be to the manager?
       A. It would be -- I would take it very seriously, and
I would probably at the least reprimand him.

  Q. Only three other very short things, Mr. Mehigan. Have you
got that pink -- it is a bit of a muddle there. Can you
put away the yellow one and keep the pink one? You will
not need the yellow one. Can you please turn to tab 59A in
the pink one -- XIII B, that is. Turn then, please, to
page -- it is the last page but one. Your document should
have page numbers; it should be number 23 in that section,
       59A.
       A. Yes, I have it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will need some help again.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, it is the last document but one in that
tab, immediately before the telex to Mr. Nicholson. It is
a typewritten document. I do not know what the handwritten
£11.20 represents. Do you know what that is, Mr. Mehigan
       -- at the bottom?
       A. Yes. It is my writing, in fact. No, I cannot recall.

  Q. Never mind. I am more concerned with the typescript just
above: ML/10/12/1979, which is the date of the document.
ML is who, do you know?
       A. That is my secretary, Margaret Long.

  Q. Please look at the last paragraph of this document, the
last paragraph of writing. This reports or apparently
reports a conversation between Margaret Long who spoke to
Mr. Tommy White in the ITGWU, when you were not there?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. As we see from the first paragraph. You cannot give
evidence about what passed between Margaret Long and
Mr. White. But I want to ask you to look at the last
paragraph. You had better read the one before. "He said"
