Day 134 - 13 Jun 95 - Page 45
Q. We looked at a document in relation to that, did we not?

MR. MORRIS: If we look further down on the page at No. 43 near
the bottom: "Rarely required to work beyond schedules".
Only 53 per cent agreed with that figure. In fact, on the
other page it has 31 per cent actively disagreed with
that. So would you accept then that working beyond your
schedule is prevalent at McDonald's, that it is more than
rare for a substantial number of employees, according to
your opinion survey?
A. Yes, I would accept that, yes. But, given the number
of hours that we talked about earlier, I am not sure
whether that is likely to give rise to a serious cause for
concern in terms of the absolute number of hours people are
working.

Q. But it is the principle, is it not ---
A. I do not know.

Q. -- of being scheduled for a certain amount of time and
being required, as the word put there, to work longer than
that?
A. Yes, that is what is being described there, yes.

Q. Underneath that: "I received my breaks when due", only 52
per cent agreed with that. In fact, as we see over the
page on H1, 28 per cent actually disagreed that they
received their breaks when due. Does that concern you?
A. Yes, yes, it does. I think people should be given
breaks at reasonable intervals and so on when they are
working.

Q. I do note that near the bottom, No. 33: "Rap sessions are
helpful", only 46 per cent agreed with that. I cannot find
where 16 per cent disagreed and 38 per cent did not give an
answer. The point of this survey -----
A. Can I comment on the rap session ---

Q. You can, if you want.
A. -- as you have mentioned it. As you know, there is a
fair percentage of people who are not sure, and they may be
people who have not attended one. But because that is a
low figure, that is something we have actually taken on
board. What we are doing is coming up with a kind of
different format for communication sessions along the lines
of quality circles, which we feel may be more relevant.

We are going to trial those to see if people find those
better. So, we have seen that that had a low figure and
for whatever reason we want to try to make sure that we are
using the right communication vehicles with our employees.

Q. When you get these results in, each store will get a kind
of summarised -- you compare the results against some kind
of norm, will you not?
A. Yes.

Q. If it is 3 points above or if it 10 points above, you might
be concerned if it is 10 points -- either side you may have
concern?
