Day 134 - 13 Jun 95 - Page 51

other information about what proportion of McDonald's
employees are women with young children?
       A. No, that is right. We do not have that anywhere and
the only other thing that would be relevant is that if when
the person starts, if they said that they wanted to have
time off in holidays, that that can be accommodated. So
that would be another way in which it would come to the
       Manager's attention.

  Q. No statistics or anything like that?
       A. No.

MR. MORRIS: Could you explain how performance reviews are done
in a store, how are they organised?
       A. There is some variation to this, but the actual
meeting -- I will describe that first and then if you want
me to describe the variations that may occur around that,
I will because again it is, you know, to some extent
discretionary -- but, in principle, the Manager writes up
the review and grades the person, and then sits down with
the individual, gives them a copy of the form and explains
the ratings and the reasons for them.

  Q. They have to fill in certain forms -- does the actual crew
member have to fill in any forms to get pass rates and
       things like that?
       A. No.

  Q. What about for pay rises? I am getting a little bit
confused about the various -- when a worker gets a pay rise
of five pence, for example, or 10 pence or, indeed,
0 pence, they have to have a certain level of competence?
       A. Are you linking this in with the training? Is that
what you were thinking of about them filling in?

  Q. They do have to have a certain level of competence, do they
       not?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Not in just in one particular job but across ---
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- the jobs that they would be expected to do as a crew
       person?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Are you asking if there is a particular form
       of document?

MR. MORRIS: No. I am trying to see -- someone could not get
that competence just in a few hours, could they? It takes
       time to get that?
       A. Yes, it does.

  Q. It would take some weeks of doing McDonald's work to get
       that level of competence?
       A. Yes, but again it depends, you can learn it -- I am
sorry, I am not speaking loudly enough again -- you learn
it in stages and it depends which areas because, obviously,
they learn different tasks at different stages, be it for
