1 Q. Could you think of any examples of where the animals'
welfare over the last three days you have mentioned
2 actually was detrimental to economic interest?
A. We are thinking of more specifically now in terms of
3 the context of the -----
4 Q. Where improvements have been made or where the welfare of
animals was taken into consideration because the people
5 cared about the animals; it did not have any economic
implications.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Think about your question again, because it
7 is not entirely to clear to me.
8 MR. MORRIS: We have not much time, so that is why I am making
a sweeping question. I would have liked to have gone
9 through in detail all the points we are discussing.
10 MR. JUSTICE BELL: What is the point you would like to make?
11 MR. MORRIS: An example can be that if cows are not frightened
as they go towards the killing area, then it helps the
12 management?
A. It does.

Q. They can sit down?
14 A. It can mean they would be easier to handle and get
into the stunning pen, which may not have a bearing on the
15 carcass quality in that particular example though.
16 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Are there any instances where improvements
have been made which have been put to you in the course of
17 your evidence where you think that will have carried with
it a benefit, a commercial benefit, in the sense of
18 improvement of the meat or the attractiveness or value of
the meat?
19 A. Now we are turning to more specific issues in terms of
these abattoirs, are we not? Yes?

Q. Well, are you restricting it to the abattoirs or just the
21 treatment of the animals and chickens altogether?
22 MR. MORRIS: Everything really. Everything we have mentioned
in the last three days.
23 A. So it is not just my evidence? Because you have
mentioned other things which are not involved in my
24 evidence, for example.
25 MR. JUSTICE BELL: You have to stick to the things in your
evidence.

MR. MORRIS: Stick to your evidence, yes.
27 A. I beg your pardon. There are not very many, I would
not have thought. Certainly of the things that have been
28 discussed, yes, there are areas where improved welfare is
beneficial to meat quality, and dairy cows, dark cutting
29 beef, would be one example. That example is not relevant
in the case of my evidence. Let me have half a minute
30 just to think that through because it is quite a big
question.
