Day 014 - 20 Jul 94 - Page 49

     1 remain to this day?
              A. To the best of my knowledge, it does.
     2
         Q. "However it is it is likely that such effects are related
3 to body size, and the Panel recommended that children
should have proportionately lower NSP intakes. Children
4 of less than two years should not take such foods at the
expense of more energy-rich foods which they require for
     5 adequate growth.

6 The panel made no specific recommendations for sub-groups
of the adult population defined either by age or by sex.
7 However people who have a tendency to constipation are
particularly encouraged to increase their NSP intake
8 especially from whole grain cereal sources.

9 Guidance on high intakes: In view of the lack of evidence
for benefit of intakes of NSP in excess of 32 grammes
10 daily, the Panel saw no advantage in exceeding this
level. Furthermore such intakes are not seen in
11 self-selected diets and potentially undesirable effects
cannot be excluded. Caution in the use of sources of NSP
12 containing phytate (particularly unprocessed wheat bran)
is advised, especially in elderly people".
    13
I only need to ask you this, Professor Wheelock: An ounce
14 of fibre or an ounce of anything is about 28 and a half
              grammes, is it?
    15 A. Yes, about that.

16 Q. So here we have, what, about three-quarters of an ounce?
              A. That is right.
    17
         Q. As the recommended amount ---
    18 A. Yes.

    19 Q. -- of daily intake.
              A. Yes.
    20
MR. MORRIS: I do not think that is right, is it?
    21
MR. RAMPTON: I do not know.
    22
MR. JUSTICE BELL: On line four of that page, page 68, where it
23 says "... increased risk of bowel disease", do you know if
              that includes malignant cancer?
    24 A. Sorry, line four?

25 Q. Of page 68. I think in this respect we are particularly
concerned with cancer; it just says "increased risk of
    26 bowel disease".
              A. Yes, I am not sure if that is referring specifically
27 to cancer; I would imagine it would include -----

28 Q. No. I am not suggesting that is all it means, but that it
includes bowel cancers. If you do not know, say so?
29 A. I am not sure. I would not wish to comment on that.

30 MR. RAMPTON: That is a bit I did not read out, I apologise to
your Lordship. I had not meant to miss it out.
