Day 006 - 05 Jul 94 - Page 49
1 up on the project. The front cover of the Barnet Borough
News had the winning poster and 'Sponsored by McDonald's'
2 on it"?
A. Yes.
3
Q. If we could then go on to the second of those documents,
4 the May 1990 issue?
A. OK.
5
MR. JUSTICE BELL: What is LSM?
6 A. Local store marketing, sir.
7 Q. Local?
A. Local store marketing.
8
MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, might I just intervene because to some
9 extent at least this cross-examination has proceeded on a
false premise. The question -- I have found it now --
10 I actually asked Mr. Preston in-chief was this -- this is
page 45, line 17, of Thursday's transcript -- "What if it
11 was suggested to you, Mr. Preston, that there are only two
reasons why you might do that", that is to say, community
12 charitable activities, "one is that it is good PR; the
other is there are tax advantages about it. What is your
13 response to that?" "It is absolute rubbish". I stress
the word "only".
14
MISS STEEL: Perhaps Mr. Rampton worded it very carefully so
15 the court would get a certain picture. I still feel I am
entitled to come back on it.
16
MR. JUSTICE BELL: You are certainly entitled to ask the
17 question. What Mr. Rampton is saying is, if it is
suggested that it is rubbish, that Mr. Preston has said it
18 was rubbish to suggest that they carried out charitable
activity for business, then that, in fact, did not reflect
19 the question he was asked.
20 MISS STEEL: No.
21 MR. JUSTICE BELL: But you carry on.
22 MISS STEEL: Nevertheless, a picture was given to people who
might have been watching that McDonald's does all these
23 things out of the goodness of their hearts; they do not
have any other interest in it.
24
MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is for me to decide. You certainly ask
25 your questions.
26 MR. RAMPTON: I was not objecting to the question at all.
27 MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, I appreciate, absolutely.
28 MISS STEEL: If we turn to page 101 of that document?
A. Yes.
29
Q. This is a letter from your friend ronald mcdonald's?
30 A. Yes.
