Day 064 - 08 Dec 94 - Page 51
that about different types of food and things like that, is
that supposed to convey to the consumer that you can get
nutritionally balanced meals at McDonald's?
A. No. I think what we are saying there is we do
continually review our products. We have made changes and
we have reduced the fat and oil content of one or two of
the products. We have reduced the fat content of cheese
slices. We are looking at ways of reducing salt and
sugar. I think that is the implication.

Q. Why are you doing that?
A. Because we think that is a responsible thing to do.

Q. For what reason?
A. It overall is going to be healthier for the customers,
as long as it does not change the taste of the product.

Q. See above that paragraph it, says "fattier foods should be
eaten sparingly"?
A. Yes.

Q. Is there anywhere in this leaflet that it says to people:
"A lot of our foods are fattier foods, what would be
considered fattier foods"?
A. I think in the tables overleaf it would show that.

Q. Well, that is presuming that people can understand what all
those figures mean in terms of diet. Is there anywhere
where it explicitly says "Our products are quite fatty,
most of our products are quite fatty, high in fat"?
A. I do not think so, but that is why we put the tables in
to show people exactly what the products do contain.

Q. You want people to think that if they eat your food it will
be good for them, do you not?
A. No. We are clearly, "The accompany table will help you
select the best McDonald's meal for yourself".

Q. On the first page for the moment, you want people to think
that if they eat your food it will be good for them?
A. No, we do not.

Q. You do not want people to think that?
A. No, we are not saying that. This whole leaflet is
about balancing a diet.

Q. Right, so why do you not explicitly state: "If you eat a
McDonald's meal it is quite high in fat, so we recommend
that you should only eat vegetables, or something like
that, for the rest of the day", or,you know, "Make sure you
only eat our foods sparingly and you do not have anything
else that is high in fat for the rest of the day"?
A. I guess we do that in a way, because it says further
down, "According to the experts, that means eating a good
mix of different types of foods. Breads, cereals,
potatoes, fruit and vegetables and dairy products and meat,
are all valuable foods for providing plenty of nourishment.
Fattier foods should be eaten sparingly."

Q. Yes, but you do not state anywhere, do you, that McDonald's
