Day 155 - 14 Jul 95 - Page 65

MR. MORRIS: When Mr. Magee says, and Mr. Rampton asked you
about this, that the five star people have lousy wages as
well as him, presumably, and yet they managed to treat the
people below them as badly as they were treated themselves,
it is a management tactic, is it not, to substitute
improvements in wages or conditions with giving people
       power over people.
       A. No, that is not true.

  Q. That is why McDonald's has such a complex hierarchy
       compared to other jobs?
       A. I cannot speak for McDonald's; I am speaking for
       myself.

  Q. You may have low wages but at least you can boss someone
else around, a kind of way of dealing with in-store
       conditions?
       A. That is not true.

  Q. About Mr. Magee feeling that he was not paid for the hours
he worked, and not being able to believe the clock cards
tallying, is this something you have come across at
       McDonald's?
       A. Only when crew members have forgotten to clock out.

  Q. Does that happen a lot?
       A. Not very often. I think it is in their own interests
to clock out. I think quite a few people were aware of
every minute and every hour they worked, so it was not
       really a problem at all.

  Q. So we are talking about 99 per cent of the time people are
       clocking out properly?
       A. Sorry, say that again?

  Q. 99 per cent of the time people will clock out at the
       correct times?
       A. That is correct, yes.

  Q. Is that something that people have said to you, crew
members have said to you, over the years or at rap
sessions, "I am not getting paid for all the hours
       I work"?
       A. As I stated before, it is a very rare case. Now it is
computerised and even in those days, it was all with clock
       machines.

  Q. Now there would be even less confusion than there might
have been in the mid 80s or late 80s?
       A. There should be no confusion at all apart from when
there is either a computer error or a crew member has
forgotten to clock in or out for break or forgot clock out
to go home and then went home.

  Q. If people were concerned about that kind of thing, would
they bring it up at a rap session? Would that be the sort
of thing that would come out of a rap session?
       A. Only if it was a persistent problem but 99.9 times out
of 100 you would get the crew member come up to the Manager
