Day 066 - 14 Dec 94 - Page 74

MS. STEEL: It is 1989 according to the statement.

MR. RAMPTON: I do not mind whether it is 80 or 89, because what
I am interested in is the fifth column which is, I think,
headed "1990". Is it headed 1990?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: "1990 Gee Whiz Numbers".

MR. RAMPTON: Do you have that?
A. Yes, I do.

Q. That is 1990. What I want help with is the figure for the
total which is the fourth line down. I am not clear
whether it is 497 or 407.

MS. STEEL: I think it must be 97.
A. It is 497.

MR. RAMPTON: Thank you very much, 497. I have not added them
up. Is it 309? 389 perhaps it is. Never mind, it was
only the first digit I was uncertain about. So we say
497,889, £128 million, is that right?
A. That is correct.

Q. That is correct. Then if we turn over the page -- we will
not do that just yet. What I wanted to ask, were these
figures pulled out of data at McDonald's?
A. Yes, this is an internal document where we estimate all
of our consumption of our major products, so it is
McDonald's numbers.

MR. MORRIS: Is this the USA?

THE WITNESS: The USA only, that is correct.

MR. RAMPTON: Over the page appendix 2 we find World Meat
Statistics. There are, first of all, some tables, them
some graphs. Where did they come from?
A. They come from two sources: the United States
Department of Agriculture and the Australian Meat and
Livestock Corporation.

Q. We see at the bottom of the right-hand page on the first
sheet "Source US DA" underneath the table and on the top of
the next document "World Beef Production". You have
written, is it your writing, "Source Australian Meat and
Livestock Corporation"?
A. Yes, it is.

Q. Once again for 1990, the relevant column for this purpose
is beef and veal which on the first sheet is the first
column on the left-hand side in the lower of the two
blocks. These are in thousands of tonnes of carcass weight
is that right? Is it right or not? I cannot read it.
A. I think you have lost me.

Q. Sorry. "World Meat Production" right? The first one is
"World Livestock Numbers". Do you have the table headed
"World Meat Statistics"?
