Day 242 - 29 Apr 96 - Page 28
Q. I think you told us this morning, but I want to confirm
this, again it is a reliable source of information for
those of us that are ignorant about Costa Rica, I take it?
A. Except for one or two things which would take us a long
way, but it is published by The Pentagon and CIA people and
they see things through their own prism.

Q. We do not have any military aspect to this case. Yes,
thank you very much.

MR. MORRIS: I have not any further questions but, as regarding
that map, I will disclose the page in which it is first
referred to. This is the large Tosi map.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: It does say -- it is not very helpful, to be honest
-- under the heading "Climate" on page 10: "Although
entirely within the tropical latitudinal region, Costa Rica
possesses great climatic diversity. Within its borders, 12
distinctive ecological life zones, or 'bioclimates', (Fig.
11-1)", which is the map, "and at least three different
rainfall regimes have been identified (Tosi 1961, 1969)".
So it seems that the map is actually done by Mr. Tosi. "It
is perhaps the wettest country in the world, with a
nationwide rainfall average of 3,300 mm/year". That does
not really -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you make a photocopy of that?

MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What page is it?

MR. MORRIS: It is page 10. I think the Plaintiffs have a copy
of this document in its entirety. If it is of any help,
I can give the entire document because, to be honest, it
has absolutely massive information about Costa Rica in it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not want to read masses of information
about Costa Rica.

MR. MORRIS: No.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I want evidence relating to the issues in the
case.

MR. MORRIS: All right then.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What I do think I need is where there is a
map -- I think you have probably found it -- where there is
something in the text which refers to Figure 1 or 2, I need
to see what the reference is.

MR. MORRIS: Yes, OK. I will give you a copy of that page.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you for coming, Dr. Carriere.
A. Thank you.
(The witness withdrew)
