Day 119 - 02 May 95 - Page 67
competition with each other for that post?
A. I think that would be -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: They are anyway?
A. You would find that in any situation. I mean, every
police constable in the country is in competition to become
a sergeant.

MR. MORRIS: So the point I am putting to you is that as long as
there is -- well, obviously more than 0.3 per cent would
like to become salaried?
A. I do not know.

Q. Well, in that box that is filled in on that form
about "Would like to progress" in the attitude, in your
experience most people or many people would like to
progress; is that correct?
A. I feel if they wanted to progress and they were
suitable, the vacancies would be there, we obviously --
and I go back on what I just said -- take some advantage
in bringing people from outside straight into management.
But I feel quite sure we would accommodate a higher
percentage of crew than that if they wanted to come in.

Q. But if 20 per cent of people working for McDonald's -----
A. Well, they would not get in. Not 20 per cent. There
is not that many management positions.

Q. The opportunities for graduates would be minimal if 20 per
cent or more wanted to?
A. Of course, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is that a natural break?

MR. MORRIS: I think so.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will resume at 10.30 tomorrow.
