Day 259 - 10 Jun 96 - Page 63

I came -- I remember coming out through that door and
       sitting there.

  Q. There was no one sitting over our side?
       A. I did not say there was no one. There were very few
       people sitting on your side.

  Q. How many?
       A. I cannot -- I can remember, I can remember the tourists
sitting just in front of me, and I can remember a gentleman
sitting just behind you. That is the people who I can
       remember in my mind.

  Q. Only one person?
       A. No, there may have been more. I just remember a
gentleman with shoulder length hair, fairish, sitting
behind you, with a pile of them.

  Q. So you do not remember at least, sort of, three or four
people sitting more or less directly behind?
       A. They may have been there, but I cannot -- they do not
figure in my recollections of the day.

  Q. No, because they would have obscured your view of what was
going on here, would they not?
       A. I do not think so.

  Q. When did you first tell anybody about what you had seen, or
what you say you had seen, rather?
       A. Very, very soon after; maybe even on the same day.

  Q. But you were not asked to do a statement until very
       recently?
       A. I was asked to do a statement at around the time.
I was asked to jot down my memories of what I saw at the
time; and I think just because there was so much to do on
the case, it got left to me to actually sign the statement
until a few months ago (sic).

  Q. You did not think to write one out for yourself, seeing as
       you are a trained solicitor?
       A. I wrote down some notes. I did not write out a full
       statement, no.

MR. MORRIS: It might have taken up 15 minutes of your valuable
       time?
       A. Probably.

MS. STEEL: The pile of papers which you saw here or there,
with the A4 size photocopy on the top, did you see those
       being distributed?
       A. No.

  Q. Basically, the pile was just sitting there, and you saw it
       sitting there?
       A. There was a pile sitting there, and there was an
identical copy in the lady's hands.

  Q. Right. The elderly couple you saw, you say their dress
suggested they were tourists. What were they wearing?
