Day 247 - 10 May 96 - Page 22

  Q. I do not really want to turn up this memo but it is a memo
from Tom Alim. It says at the bottom "copy to Paul
       Preston".

Now, I would like to turn up next, as it relates to that
-- before I go back to the Health and Safety matters -- the
statement of Steve Copeland. Do you know where Steve
Copeland is living at the moment?
       A. Well, I know he is not living here. I think the United
States, but I am not sure.

  Q. He is still working for McDonald's, is he, or a McDonald's
       company?
       A. I think he was going to become a franchisee but I do
not know that I had that necessarily confirmed. I believe
he was going to become a licensee.

  Q. Can we turn to his statement in the Plaintiffs' witness
statement. It is yellow and it would be employment. I am
not sure whether it was a Civil Evidence Act Notice or
       not. It is yellow 13.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Tab 40?

MR. MORRIS: Tab 40. He wrote this statement when he was the
Vice President of Personnel for McDonald's Development
Company which, since June 1988, he says, has had its
European headquarters in London. Is that still the case?
       A. Well, it has an office here. There is not really a
European Headquarters currently. It has been divided:
Northern Europe, Southern Europe, Central Europe. There
       are 3 offices currently.

  Q. Right. Is there a current person who would be equivalent
       to Steve Copeland?
       A. Here in London?

  Q. Well, anywhere. His previous position is?
       A. His previous position when he left the office in London
       was not refilled.

  Q. Right, so who would be covering his duties?
       A. They would be handled in the local countries. It was
felt as though with his departure the countries were
capable of dealing with that which was required on their
own behalf with Oakbrook, the Head Offices in Chicago, or
consultation in help from other relationship partners.

  Q. So the 3 regions now in Europe, North, South and East, you
said that it has been kind of divided up into 3 regions
rather than Europe as a whole?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Are you covering his responsibilities for, say, Northern
       Europe now?
       A. No. The job he did during the time he was here was
primarily one of developing people in each country to do
the task. When that was felt to be complete, Mr. Copeland
returned to the United States. There are people in place
in each of the operating countries around Europe to do the
