paper to live their lives?" Answer, "In my opinion it is
       humane, yes."

Some of the practices at Sun Valley were looked into in
more detail over the coming pages and it was clear that
McDonald's was either reckless as not to know about them or
completely indifferent to the fact that they were
happening. He had never visited any pig farms or beef
farms, that was on page 35. Question, "Has anyone else in
your department?" Answer,"I would not expect them to have
done so, only out of their own curiosity, really." That is
       what what he said.

This is all about whether any there is effective monitoring
or interest from McDonald's about animal welfare. They
never asked them to stock the birds less densely, page 39.

It is an interesting part on page 39, incidentally, about
petro-agro-chemicals used by Howard Long, the lettuce
suppliers, bottom of page 39. It says, "Our finished
product specifications would not include animal welfare."
He talks about goads on page 40 -- "No, they should not be
using goads." Some of McKeys suppliers. McKey had not
told him that some of their suppliers were using goads. So
he was relying on the suppliers to impose any relevant
concerns of McDonald's, or just generally to be concerned
about animal welfare, but he was not being informed of
virtually the one thing which seemed to be emanating from
McDonald's as a concern, which was the use of goads, and he
had not been informed about it. So we cannot really trust
the suppliers, which was their one line of defence.
He said on page 41, if one of the abattoirs was using goads
he would expect McKey to stop it. And on page 42, he said,
"They have never looked into employing anybody at all to
       specifically look after animal welfare."

That is Kenny. I have just got to find Mr. Oakley on
animals. (Pause) Regarding Mr. Oakley on animals, he is on
       day 61, pages 39 to 54, also including pages 61, 63 and
       65. That is some of the more relevant matters on whether
McDonald's have a policy, whether there was any
monitoring. He was asked on page 39, day 61, "So your
animal welfare policy is in fact just a policy to comply
with the laws of the various countries in which you
operate?" Answer, "That is correct." He says on page 42,
"The way McDonald's would get involved in terms of animal
welfare is through the quality assurance department." That
is the one that Mr. Kenny stated there was no one employed
for that purpose specifically. "And the unannounced visits
they would make to check what is happening in the supply
       chain."

And talked about Barbara Crawford visiting Sun Valley
monthly, or something. "Why does she visit them?" Answer,
"I think from a quality point of view which is what she is
really responsible for." They had had problems with bone
complaints and foreign bodies, and so on. Page 43, near
the top of the page. "When she is at Sun Valley, she does
go to the farms from time to time?" "Not that frequently,
she is not required to. She is really concerned with the
