       than it was?
       A. Better than it was in Nottingham, which we would
expect, and over more time we would expect it to improve
       further.

  Q. Presumably, the company thinks that there is sufficient
prospect of it working in the future to keep it going?
       A. Yes, it is like any major programme, it is a question
of time and you could short circuit that time by throwing a
lot of resources at the project if you really had to. If
there was legislation, for example, you could short circuit
the situation, but there is not legislation and we do not
need to short circuit the situation. We do think it will
work adequately but it will take time.

MS. STEEL: How could you shorten it by spending or throwing
       resources at it?
       A. You have just got to have a lot more people in the
       restaurants making the programme work.

  Q. Do you mean giving information or what are you saying?
       A. No, it is not a question of information. In Germany,
for example, the crew people that work in the restaurants
physically do a lot of separating themselves. The German
public probably are not much better than the UK public in
terms of separating polystyrene waste. So, a lot more
effort is required in the back of the restaurant to
continue the separation. That is what I mean by throwing
       resources at it.

  Q. You do not consider that to be worthwhile unless there is
       going to be legislation?
       A. We do not consider that it is a priority today.

  Q. Why has not this recycling trial programme been expanded to
       include other stores?
       A. I think we are getting all the experience that we need
from the five stores that we have. It is not uncommon in
McDonald's with any project that we run, or maybe with a
new product that we run, to pick five key restaurants and
operate the programme through those five restaurants.

  Q. And not to expand it even after a couple of years?
       A. It depends on the degree of success. We would expand
it if we were seeing more success as we would with a new
product. As you see more success, then you try it in a
larger market; you try it in a whole market.

  Q. But at the moment then you do not have any plans for
       expanding this programme?
       A. Not that I am aware of. I think you should ask the
operations people when they come into the witness box, but
I am not aware of any plans to expand it; there may be but
I am not aware of it.

  Q. Is the reason for that the cost?
       A. Not expanding?

  Q. Yes.
       A. I do not know that we are not expanding; I have just
