2 would take take-away meals at least once a week compared
3 with those in older age groups, particularly 35 to 54, or
4 45 plus and pensioners.

6 MR. MORRIS: On that subject, what is the implication for
7 younger people eating fast food more often?
8 A. Again our concern, as I say, at the time was: What is
9 the impact of fast food diets and on whom is it
10 impacting? From the British -- the Dietary Survey of
11 British Schoolchildren, it would look as if younger
12 people, that is to say, older school children and people
13 in social class 5, were most likely to bear the impact,
14 and this, if you like, confirmed that view that it was,
15 indeed, younger people rather than older that were
16 consuming take away foods.

18 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Would that include a prewrapped sandwich?
19 A. It probably would.

21 Q. For instance, to get the breadth of what take away
22 involves?
23 A. It probably would, although I note underneath table 17
24 that the most popular foods quoted were fish and chips
25 followed by Chinese followed by hamburgers. So if
26 sandwiches are there, they are not a very large portion in
27 popularity.

29 MR. MORRIS: Are there other sections of this that you want to
30 refer us to? Obviously, these are really small parts of a
31 wider jigsaw.
32 A. I am just seeing if I can find anything to do with
33 younger age groups through this particular survey. There
34 is table 19 on page 20 of this document.

36 Q. This is not about take-aways, is it?
37 A. No. It is a way of sampling what people typically eat
38 by asking them what they had yesterday.

40 Q. On that table, for example, the younger people tend to eat
41 ----?
42 A. Chips comes up fairly frequently.

44 Q. 46 per cent for chips the day before of children aged 11
45 to 15.

47 MR. JUSTICE BELL: That does not help as to what is take-away,
48 does it?
49 A. No, they could have had chips at their school dinner
50 or even at home. This asks overall.

52 MR. MORRIS: So this is a general indication of the type of
53 food that people are eating in this country as a whole?
54 A. Yes, I would imagine that was the purpose of doing
55 these surveys.

57 Q. Is there anything else about that table 19 you want to
58 draw our attention to or any other tables?
59 A. Tables 29 and 30 might bear some examination.
