Day 125 - 12 May 95 - Page 47

  Q. What particular responsibilities did you have for those
       areas?
       A. I was the senior executive in charge of those areas.
       I had a number of -----

  Q. In charge of what, sorry?
       A. All of the regions, markets, district offices located
within the what was called the Beavers' Zone, so I had a
number of Vice Presidents reporting to me along with Market
       Managers, District Managers.

  Q. You were responsible for the whole ---
       A. It was about 20.

  Q. -- workers at the company?
       A. It was about 2500, 2700 restaurants -----

  Q. Would that have included Operations, Purchasing, Quality,
       everything, yes?
       A. Basically, it was the management of those restaurants
within that area, and I relied heavily on the expertise of
my colleagues in the various disciplines you have
outlined. The officer in charge of Purchasing, Human
       Resources, Marketing ------

  Q. Reported to you?
       A. No, they did not. That was a dotted line
responsibility that the staff executives had with all of
the line executives. I was one of, I believe at the time,
five or six zone managers in the country. The various
disciplines of the Company staff officers that were in
charge of those disciplines would have direct reports in
the regions in the field, but those individuals had a
dotted line responsibility with us. By "dotted line
responsibility", I mean they did not report directly to us,
but they sought our direction, our advice on things. But
they were the subject matter of experts in those particular
areas and they reported directly to another senior officer.

  Q. Who would be higher than you?
       A. Higher than me, yes, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: A phrase has been used in relation to this
country about Operations staff or management, that is the
actual running of the restaurants themselves ---
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- was that really your field then, that you were the
Executive in charge of operations of the restaurants in
       that area?
       A. Responsible for the operation of the restaurant, the
licensing of stores in that area, overall, the overall
running of the restaurants, so no matter what the area of
concern would be, ultimately, you know, I would have some
responsibility for those areas, but specific direction in
purchasing, those matters would be really the
responsibility of the senior officer in charge of that
       area.

MR. MORRIS: Who would be your colleague?
