Day 120 - 03 May 95 - Page 56
A. Not to my knowledge.

Q. You do not remember that?
A. No.

Q. Do you remember any memo resulting from .....
A. The Guardian article?

Q. Yes.
A. No.

Q. To do with the hours that people worked?
A. As a result of the Guardian article, no.

Q. Whether or not it was as a result of the Guardian article,
around that time?
A. Well, I cannot bring them to mind

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, where is this memo? I do not know
anything about it. Have we a reference for it?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I suggest it is just left there for the
moment.

MR. RAMPTON: No, I suspect not.

MS. STEEL: Do you recall any memos being sent out about that
issue, about the hours that people worked, how long they
were supposed to work, whether they should work on their
days off or anything like that?
A. I imagine there have been notes for guidance sent out,
but I cannot remember offhand any specific memo. Memos
would certainly be sent out about hours worked.

Q. But particularly about people being made to work on their
days off?
A. No.

Q. Are you aware, when staff are asked to work on their days
off, of instances when, if they have said they did not want
to work on their days off, they have been basically told
that if they do not work on the days off, then on future
weeks they will get reduced shifts ---
A. No.

Q. -- or horrible jobs or things like that?
A. No.

Q. Would it concern you if you heard that was going on?
A. Yes.

Q. It would concern you?
A. Yes.

Q. What action would you take if you heard about that?
A. Well, we are now in a hypothetical situation again but,
depending upon the severity of it, I would probably
instruct the Field Personnel Officer to go down and find
out from the Operations people why it was necessary and why
they had done it.
