Day 034 - 11 Oct 94 - Page 16

       A. I beg your pardon?

  Q. Just the whole of chapter 4, Mr. Rampton said he has
copied -- he is probably quite right -- it is the whole
       chapter that is important?
       A. Yes. Apparently, all of this weighed in the mind of
the Surgeon General when his comments were not -- when he
has commented that fat and cancer are not simply
associated, but that association was strongly suggestive
or the evidence only suggested that that association may
       be causal.

  Q. That was relating to breast cancer specifically, was it
not? Is that a comment he has made regarding ----
       A. His comment was not limited to breast cancer. He
seemed to be emphasising breast colon and prostate in his
introductory comments. The table we went through related
only to breast cancer; his comments on animal studies
related to both breast and colon cancer.

  Q. Breast cancer has been described as the weakest area of
       evidence; is that correct?
       A. Some have described it so, not meaning there is no
association, but simply that the evidence is not as
compelling for that as for some other types.

  Q. In other words, the evidence or links between diet and
       other cancers is even stronger?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. If we just briefly look, I think it would be helpful, at
dietary fibre on page 205; it is another chart.
       A. I do not have that page.

  Q. You will have to take my copy.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not have it either.

MR. MORRIS: Mr. Rampton has a copy, I believe. (Handed) If
you could just take us through it very briefly? It is the
links between dietary fibre and colon cancer.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If I am going to follow it, I must have a
       copy.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, that is not our copy. That is
       Mr. Cannon's copy.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will hand it back when we have gone
       through this evidence.

MR. RAMPTON: I only want to say this: Is that the Surgeon
General's report your Lordship -- I have myself been
provided with a copy of chapter 4. I am hoping that by
lunch time there will be further copies. Meanwhile all
I mention of the ownership of that book 4 is that as a
consequence of the ownership there are marks in it which
are Dr. Cannon's and not ours.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I see there are notes on the front as well.
