Day 020 - 28 Jul 94 - Page 48

1 typically a prod would be administered.

2 Q. Is it possible for a cattle to turn around at that point,
              to try to move away?
3 A. It is highly unlikely, but it is possible if it did a
somersault, you know, if it put its head by its shoulder
4 and rolled over, but in cattle that is extremely unusual
behaviour -- you see that more in pigs.
     5
         Q. In the stunning pen, presumably, that is the place where a
6 cow -- you cannot say "a cattle", can you, really?
              A. Not very easily, no.
     7
         Q. A cow.
     8
MR. JUSTICE BELL: If Mr. Morris use "cows", assume he is ---
9 A. No problem with me.

10 MR. JUSTICE BELL: -- of either sex, in fact.

11 MR. MORRIS: Yes. If the cattle are stunned in the stunning
              pen?
    12 A. Correct.

13 Q. And when a cow is stunned, is there a loud noise?
              A. Associated with the discharge of the cartridge, yes.
    14
         Q. The other cows outside the stunning pen would be able to
    15 hear that loud noise?
              A. Yes.
    16
         Q. Would that put them off a bit from wanting to go into the
    17 stunning pen themselves?
              A. It could do.
    18
         Q. Have you observed an animal not wanting to go into a
19 stunning pen after hearing the noise?
              A. I have observed cattle not wanting to go into the
    20 stunning pen ---

21 MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is difficult to tell what -----
              A. -- but whether it was due to the noise or whether it
22 was due to the noise of a flayer (?) or what was on the
radio at that particular point of time or any other
23 factor, it is difficult to decide.

24 MR. MORRIS: Are there quite a lot of noises going on at this
              time?
    25 A. There is indeed.

26 Q. Could you give us an example of other noises that are
going on? You have the shot?
    27 A. Correct.

28 Q. What other noises are there?
              A. Within an abattoir there is quite a lot of equipment
29 made of metal which is -----

30 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which is clanking along, is it?
              A. Yes, so there is metal to metal contact noise. There
