Day 135 - 15 Jun 95 - Page 21

quarter. Does that accord with your experience that
somewhere over half of employees leave within a year?
       A. Yes, but you have to bear in mind that a lot of them
are students. I mean, in my own restaurant I had a lot of
people that would work part-time during Christmas, resign,
come back, work part-time during summer holidays, resign
again, work part-time during Christmas holidays again. So
you have to bear that in mind as well to that figures.

  Q. But in terms of official length of stay before someone
leaves as regards the books, that would accord with your,
       for whatever the reasons -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where are you going on this because
McDonald's have actually put this in as the situation as at
31st March 1995. It gives us information for the previous
quarter and it gives us information for 31st March 1994.
You may well have a point that the figures might have been
slightly shorter still back in 1990 when the turnover rate
was higher. But, if you want significantly better than
that from the witness, I understand, but if you are just
asking him if that reflects the situation, I think you are
       pushing at an open door.

  MR. MORRIS: Right.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The fact that you had one of the lowest
turnovers in your restaurant, was that just something to do
with the locality and it being local people and young
people who came in and tended to stay in the area or ---
       A. It might have been partly the reason.

  Q. -- was it something else?
       A. I like to think it is partly my management as well.

  Q. The way you run the show, right, yes. You are a local man
       yourself, are you?
       A. Yes.

  Q. That is what I thought.

MR. MORRIS: OK, I do not think we need to look at that document
any more. You can put it away. No further questions.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I have no re-examination. There is one
thing I would like to mention, if I may? May Mr. Sexton be
       released?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, thank you very much, Mr. Sexton.

                      (The witness withdrew)

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, it is something we have mentioned to the
Defendants in a letter which your Lordship has seen. It
would appear from the cross-examination of Mr. Sexton, such
as it was, that Mr. Sutcliffe may be going to make specific
allegations against named individuals. I am afraid I did
not catch their surnames, but one was called William, who I
think was a Manager, and another was called Angela, who
was, it is said, a Jehova's Witness.
