colorectal cancer, quite analogous with other situations
in which cause-and-effect is used to the patient's
       advantage.

Again this is all quite beyond the stage of speculation or
simply random associations, or something of that nature.
They are being quite definite about it. This has been
quite common in documents from the National Cancer
       Institute for some time.

MR. MORRIS: Should we put that document behind your -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am putting it right at the back of the
documents which are behind Dr. Barnard's statement. In
other words, it comes behind No. 10, the "slugger"
       document.

  MS. STEEL: No. 11 actually.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is "Diet and cancers", is it not, which
       is this one?

  MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am not going to put that in the binder.

MS. STEEL: So it will be No. 12 on the list. Just a final
question, I think. I do not know whether I could hand up
a copy of "Good Food, Nutrition & McDonald's" again. It
is in pink volume VI, I believe. Mr. Rampton asked you to
compare, you want page 12 of that document?
       A. Yes, thank you.

  Q. Mr. Rampton asked you to compare the first paragraph of
the booklet with the warning on the cigarette packet. For
some reason he did not draw your attention to the passage
lower down in the page under: "What else is needed for a
healthy diet?" And it says: "Many countries have
therefore published 'Dietary Guidelines' - general
recommendations concerning diet which are aimed at the
whole population in order to prevent these diseases and to
promote good health". Note that it says "in order" not
"they may prevent these diseases" and also that it says
"these diseases" not some of the diseases that were
referred to above, which include cancer. Looking at that
document, would you say that there is an indication of a
       causal nature there?
       A. Yes, it seems to me that that is what is understood in
this language. If there were no causal nature it would be
impossible to prevent but, yes, it seems quite clear and
that is what the writers or publishers of this document
       seem to intend, yes.

  Q. Right. Then the final part of that page, the last
paragraph: "It is important to remember that although
diet is an important contributory factor to these
diseases, it is not the only one". Would you say that was
-- perhaps you should say what you think that is?
       A. It is quite clear again, they are saying that diet is
an important contributory factor to these diseases of
