Day 034 - 11 Oct 94 - Page 52

government put out its recent -- we use a nutrition
pyramid which is actually a triangle but sometimes
described as a pyramid -- trying to describe relative
amounts of foods that might be included in the diet, meat
and dairy products were deemphasised; grains, vegetables
and fruits were emphasised in that graphic, and its
unveiling elicited such controversy, particularly from the
meat lobby, that it was withdrawn for fully 12 months
       before it was released again.

That is just one example, but every time nutrition
guidelines are drafted there is a great deal of opposition
from the food industry. We have grown to expect that
because we have seen that with the tobacco and liquor
industries before them. It is simply a fact of life.

MR. MORRIS: I have no further questions.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You are going to leave that, are you? If
you look at the second sheet of ours, it is headed,
"Contents" and it has a (i) at the bottom, in the top
left-hand corner I think this was the quote I had in mind
when I asked you a question a few minutes ago about the
difficulty in making changes in the diet or unwillingness
to change: "Since appetite is governed by the need for
energy, and since changes in energy intake are difficult
to sustain, it becomes especially important to consider
which foods are habitually chosen to satisfy energy
needs". Where does that quote come from in the report, do
       you know?
       A. No, I regret to say I do not.

  Q. Do you know what it is trying to say?
       A. My -----

  Q. It is not easy for me anyway to understand when it is just
       quoted shortly like that.
       A. Yes, my presumption is that they are trying to say
that one can get an adequate calorie intake from foods
that are healthful such as complex carbohydrates which are
found, of course, only in plant products or from high fat
products or meat; that one can have adequate calorie
intake from either source, but that since one will always
seek out calories every day, multiple times each day, it
is important that those be derived from healthy sources.
I presume that is what that paragraph is getting at.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I think the passage from which the bit
your Lordship referred to is based appears on page 1 as
the first complete paragraph on the right-hand column.

MR. MORRIS: I have not got page 1 in my copy.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not think I have it either.

MR. RAMPTON: Would your Lordship like a complete copy?
(Handed). I do not know if it helps explain it, but that
       is where it comes from.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, may be. It does not take the matter
