Day 021 - 29 Jul 94 - Page 64

1 mental arithmetic while you look at them.
              A. Yes.
     2
         Q. You told Ms. Steel in evidence that so far as you were
3 aware -- or it might have been, I do not know -- 96 per
cent of the people who ate at McDonald's did not eat there
4 more than once a week. Do you remember saying that?
              A. Yes, that is right.
     5
         Q. Have you added up the figures below the 4 per cent from
6 once a week 11 per cent downwards?
              A. Assume they all add up to 100.
     7
         Q. It adds up to precisely 96 per cent.
8 A. It would do, yes.

9 Q. Do you see that according to this table (assuming it is
proved) there is nobody in this country that goes once a
    10 day?
              A. Yes.
    11
         Q. Do you remember saying to Ms. Steel that her propositions
    12 were hypothetical?
              A. Yes.
    13
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, it does if that is right. The comment
14 I am about to make may not change what you are getting at,
but assuming that we are not dealing with under 1 per cent
15 or a fraction of a per cent, if this is right it must be
less, at the very least, than 1 per cent do?
    16 A. That is right.

17 MR. RAMPTON: That is absolutely right. These figures borne of
a market survey can only be approximate. They are bound
18 not to reflect detail of that kind. It is to illustrate
the point really, Professor Wheelock, we must not assume
19 these figures are set in concrete, but given those sorts
of proportions and assume they are broadly accurate,
    20 right?
              A. Yes.
    21
         Q. My question is this, and assuming that the customers at
22 McDonald's are sufficiently interested in their own health
to eat McDonald's food as part of a balanced diet, always
23 making that assumption too, do you see any danger to the
health of McDonald's customers in frequencies of this
    24 sort?
              A. No, I do not.
    25
         Q. I have only one more matter to which I would like to draw
26 your attention. In the pink volume VI, tab 15, it is the
results of the McDonald's employees feeding survey, if
27 I can call it that. Your attention was drawn to page
              200. Do you remember that?
    28 A. Yes.

29 Q. Your attention was not drawn to page 201. Can we read it,
              please?
    30
MR. MORRIS: We have the new one that was served this morning.
