Day 266 - 20 Jun 96 - Page 10
MS STEEL: But presumably not a whole cabbage, unless it was a
small one?
A. Perhaps, yes.

Q. I mean, do you know off the top of your head where that
reference is, or is that in the same book?
A. In the World Health Organisation report. I would very
quickly find if you give me a moment: Page 112. So the
fruit and vegetables 400 grammes is the lower limit
recommended a day.

Q. Right. It says on the following page: "For the purposes
of this recommendation 'fruit and vegetables does not
include potatoes other tubers or cassava'"?
A. Yes. So they will be included in the carbohydrates
recommendations as opposed to the fruit and vegetable
recommendation, yes.

Q. Right, and that is the lower limit?
A. Yes.

Q. Going back to the statement:

"A poor diet that is low in fibre, fresh fruit and
vegetables and high in fat and animal products has been
scientifically linked with some cancers, particularly bowel
cancer and heart disease. It has been estimated that 30-70
per cent of all cancers are linked to diet an certain
cancers, such as bowel, breast and prostate are clearly
diet related by cancer expert Professor Doll (1990
Symposium on Diet and Cancer published by the Nutrition
Society, volume 49, pages 119-31)".

I do not know whether we have got that document.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, unless there is some particular point
to make out of it, has it not been mentioned before? Is it
a new Doll report?

MR. RAMPTON: I do not know, my Lord.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: An additional Doll report?

MR. RAMPTON: I really cannot say. I have 4 or 5 Dolls dotted
about the place to different effects at different times,
starting in 1975, I think.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The thing is, the 30-70 per cent figure I
have had from a Doll article we looked at previously. That
very wide bracket.

MS. STEEL: OK.
A. The consensus now by the Health Education Authority
is--

MR. JUSTICE BELL: By whom?
A. By the Health Education Authority, the Government
sponsored organisation which promotes healthy eating
amongst other health promotion activities. It is around 35
per cent of cancers.
