     1 birds.

2 Q. There was not anything that was apparent from just looking
              at them?
3 A. There may have been but it was not recorded, so
I cannot -- and I cannot recall it, so I do not know is
4 the answer. Can I add one comment on breed
substitution? That is, it is not generally known which
5 breeds are better than others in terms of leg weakness
within commercial broiler breeds. So, that information
6 may not be readily available to Sun Valley to know which
is the appropriate breed to choose.
     7
         Q. Within broilers?
8 A. Within broilers. Then that is what my comment was
              directed at.
     9
         Q. But there are other types of chickens where it is known?
10 A. Which are not -- which you mean are not broiler
              strains, yes.
    11
         Q. Yes. So if people did not want to use the other sorts of
12 chickens, that would be for economical reasons?
              A. That is correct.
    13
MR. MORRIS: Just a question on the total leg weaknesses: The
14 survey you did was 61 per cent leg weakness, is that
correct, and 39 per cent with 0? It just says 59, i.e.
    15 39 per cent had 0 score?
              A. That is correct.
    16
         Q. The Kestin et al. 1992 one was -- I do not know, is that
17 the one that was 44 per cent?

18 MR. RAMPTON: Mr. Morris is not comparing like with like. The
score of 0 is included in the pathology tables given to
19 appendix 2 to Dr. Gregory's report. If Mr. Morris would
like to know what the figure of 0 scores is, it is 8 out
20 of 32 cases which is 25 per cent.

21 MS. STEEL: I am a bit confused now, but to clarify things,
when you did this gait score at Sun Valley that is
22 referred to in the middle of the statement, there was only
39 per cent with a score of 0?
    23 A. That is correct.

24 MR. JUSTICE BELL: The 152 there, were they taken by the same
random sample method, your hoop, or whatever you call it?
    25 A. Yes.

26 MR. MORRIS: It does seem to indicate there are quite wide
variations depending on when the sample was made?
27 A. There are tremendous variations between flocks.
Subsequent experience has taught us there is a vast
28 variation between flocks in the prevalence of leg
              weakness.
    29
MS. STEEL: So, based on one visit to one farm, would you feel
30 that it is safe -- I mean, do you really feel that it is
safe to say that their incidence of leg weakness was
