Day 021 - 29 Jul 94 - Page 65
1
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Turn this one up, first of all.
2
MR. RAMPTON: It is tab 15, pink VI, page 201. Just look at
3 it, please, first and tell me whether you did in fact
write this page as it appears you did on 30th September
4 1992?
A. Yes, I did.
5
Q. Then I shall read it. "Conclusions: On the basis of the
6 results ..." Well, I suppose I ought to ask you this.
Did McDonald's submit the results of this survey to you?
7 A. Yes.
8 Q. You did not see them by accident?
A. No.
9
Q. Were you asked to make your comments and conclusions about
10 it?
A. Yes, I was.
11
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Did you see the summary of the survey which
12 is on page 200, or did you see the additional information
whatever it may contain that was handed in this morning?
13 A. Yes. I have not seen what came in this morning, but
I did see the original raw data.
14
MR. RAMPTON: That is what came in this morning is the original
15 raw data. It is a series of questionnaires?
A. That is right.
16
Q. Filled in by employees?
17 A. Yes.
18 Q. You saw that as well?
A. Yes, I saw that before I wrote this report.
19
Q. So you also saw the summary that has been prepared?
20 A. That is right.
21 Q. May I then read what you concluded. I am much obliged to
Mrs. Brinley-Codd. Apparently it took you some time to
22 digest it because we have a note in our new file of the
raw data that it was sent to you on 31st July, page 27 of
23 the new bundle. You wrote: "Conclusions: On the basis of
the results, I believe that we need not be concerned that
24 there is undue reliance on McDonald's food for most of the
employees. I suspect that the quality of their diet is
25 not influenced by the fact that the respondents work in a
McDonald's restaurant". Can I pause there, what did you
26 mean by that?
A. Well, what I had in mind was that I suspected that
27 they would be fairly typical of many young people who do
not have a particularly healthy diet anyway.
28
Q. There is somebody there, a young chap of about 20 or 25,
29 who seems to eat an awful of McDonald's, consumes an awful
lot of beer and spirits, smokes 40 cigarettes a day but
30 only weighs 9.5 stone. Is that the sort of picture you
had in mind?
