Day 096 - 03 Mar 95 - Page 22

that one of our retail customers said, yes.

MR. MORRIS: But that is not McDonald's when you said, "one of
       our customers"?
       A. No, it is not McDonald's specifically.

MS. STEEL: If you could carry on, please?

                 (The video recording continued)

THE WITNESS: There we are -- chewing a stone.

MS. STEEL: Is that typically how the waste slurry is disposed
of on your farm or your farms?
       A. No, that looks like very much like I saw in America
       last year in Missouri, though.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Pause there. Actually, you wanted to stop it
but I think it would be only right to go on and see the
whole of the lagoon and then ask questions. Can you play
on? Stop, please. So, that is not your system but you saw
something like that in Missouri last year?
       A. Yes, we actually have our -- if we ever collect any
effluent anywhere like from the back of sow stalls, that
       would go into ---

  Q. Keep your voice up, please.
       A. -- an hermetically sealed slurry stall.

MS. STEEL: What would happen to it then?
       A. It would then be put on the farm land, as any normal
       manure would.

  Q. You said you have been to America. Have you visited pig
       farms over there as well?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Are the conditions on the pig farms there pretty similar?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why not make a mental note of that? Finish
with the film and then Mr. Bowes can go back to the witness
       box.

MS. STEEL: That is actually all I wanted to show on the film.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Right. Would you like to go back to the
       witness box, Mr. Bowes?

(The witness returned to the witness box)

MS. STEEL: The conditions that you have seen on pig farms in
       America, are they pretty similar?
       A. No, the method is quite different to what we do in this
       country.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Voice up, please, Mr. Bowes.
       A. Their methods are different to our methods in this
country. I think that is fair to say that our welfare
standards in the UK are probably the highest in the world.
