Day 266 - 20 Jun 96 - Page 40

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is 797.

THE WITNESS: I think it might be just a different cover.

MR. RAMPTON: All right. Can you turn to page 91?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It was not in it when we looked for it
before.

MR. RAMPTON: 91.
A. Yes.

Q. This has to do with dietary relationships between various
substances and disease. Has your page got 4.1.2. "Fat
Consumption" at the top?
A. Yes, it has, yes.

Q. Can I ask you to look at the second paragraph. It says
this: "Table 11 (page 67), which summarises the links
between diet and cancer, it suggests that a high intake of
total fat may also promote the development of a number of
cancers. The evidence cannot be considered sufficiently
strong to be termed 'causal', but most expert groups now
consider it prudent to reduce fat intakes in western
societies from a prevailing figure of about 40 per cent of
energy towards the 20 to 30 per cent figure."

Now, is there anything in that paragraph which, as of
today's date, the 20th June, 1996, you would disagree with?
A. Could you give me a moment to read what it says?

Q. Of course.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: It should also be pointed out that the witness is
entitled to read the context of it as well. I do not know
whether that makes any difference.

MR. RAMPTON: No, it does not.

THE WITNESS: Sorry, what was that about the context?

MR. RAMPTON: My question was whether, if you have read that
little paragraph in relation to fat and cancer, there is
anything in that paragraph, as of today's date, with which
you would disagree?
A. Table 11, page 67. So I will have to turn to that.

Q. That summarises the links. I want to know whether you
disagree with the conclusions which the authors of this
report have drawn?
A. If you give me a moment to -- it refers to a table on
page 67. If you give me a moment to look at that table.
(Pause). Do you want me to give my interpretation of
that?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. The question was very carefully
expressed. It does not involve you having to look at table
