Day 092 - 27 Feb 95 - Page 60
productive to a 6.5 pound bird the amount of times that we
do.

Q. That was after, was it, 52 days or something?
A. Pretty close, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: At Sun Valley, which is a Cargill subsidiary,
we heard that when the females are taken at, say, between
41 and 43 days then the males are released over the whole
shed; a partition is lifted. So, in effect, the maximum
density is just before the females are caught and taken to
slaughter. Do you understand?
A. Yes.

Q. Because over the next 10 days, although the males are
continuing to grow they have got a greater area to wander
over if they choose. Is that the same system in the
States?
A. No, it is not. In the States the birds are sexed on
day one, so they are grown separately.

Q. But in separate sheds?
A. Yes. What I gave you is the males, the highest.

MR. MORRIS: How do you know that the shed is 20,000 square
feet?
A. I just multiply the front towards the back of the
square feet.

Q. If it was 200 feet by 40 feet, which is double what you
said before, it would only be 8,000 square feet?
A. No.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You said 20 feet by 200.
A. Then maybe I get confused with metres and square feet.

Q. Which is 4,000 square feet. Something has gone wrong
somewhere, has it not?
A. Yes.

Q. That is why I illustrated it with the width of a goal.
A. The width will be probably if you look at it from wall
to wall, so ----

MR. MORRIS: From your experience how many times the size of
this court would be a shed?
A. Is that what you are going after? I am not really
looking after widths or lengths. What is important for me
is to square the area, that is what I look for, which is
what I gave you.

Q. So we can all get a general idea, are we talking about
twice the size of this court, something like that?
A. If you want to know what I normally do, I walk around.
I walk around and take my steps which is .8 of a metre.
That is how I estimate areas. I can do that but I do not
see the benefit.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not know whether there is an issue about
your 36 kilos a square metre or not, but just in case it is
