1 anathema to think that they need some third party to
represent them. They can quite happily, if the forum is
     2 right, represent themselves.

3 Q. Are you aware that trade unions are the largest single
membership organisation in the country, I think, numbering
     4 about 8 million?
              A. If you say so. I have never paid attention to such
     5 things.

6 Q. And they are all employees, those 8 million, so it is
8 million out of, say, 23 million workforce?
     7 A. Could be.

     8 Q. 20 million?
              A. I have no idea.
     9
         Q. OK, you do not know. You are the relationship partner for
10 Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Belgium, Iceland and
              Ireland, that is correct?
    11 A. Yes.

12 Q. How many of those countries have working relationships
              with trade unions?
13 A. Well, let me see.

14 Q. Shall we go through them one by one? Norway?

15 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know the answer to the question?
              A. I am not sure what he means by "working
16 relationship". Are there McDonald's employees members of
unions in the countries? I do not know the answer to
    17 that.

    18 MR. MORRIS: No?
              A. Does McDonald's negotiate terms and conditions with
19 unions on behalf of the entire country? I do not think we
              do anywhere.
    20
MR. MORRIS: Let us go country by country. Norway, do you
21 negotiate with trade unions in Norway?
              A. I do not think so, no.
    22
         Q. Do you negotiate with trade unions in Sweden?
    23 A. I do not know.

    24 Q. What about Denmark?
              A. I think we are part of an employers' collective
25 organisation. Per se, we do not negotiate directly.
There may be an employer's element of which we are one of
26 many who do, but I am not hundred per cent sure.

    27 Q. What about Finland?
              A. I do not think we have any links there whatsoever.
28 I am guessing though, I am not sure.

    29 Q. Holland?
              A. I would have said no.
    30
         Q. Belgium?
