Day 276 - 09 Jul 96 - Page 15
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Turn on from your letter and the penultimate
sheet in that section, if it is the same as mine. No,
turn?
A. Backwards.

Q. No, forwards, please.
A. Well, in this particular section mine is the last
letter, there is my letter and there is one -- what are you
looking for and let me see if I can find it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is a letter dated 7th December from David
Walker to Roberto Gadente (handed).

MS. STEEL: If you just have a read of that, please?
A. I have not seen this before but I have now read it.

Q. Right, okay. That does not refresh your memory, that
Braslo did do business with Anglo or anything like that?
A. That was not my job.

Q. Okay?
A. And I would not know who Anglo did business with.

Q. Okay. I have got no further questions. Thank you.

Cross-examined by Mr. Morris

Q. The 80, 85 per cent, whatever it was, of cattle that you
bought from in from around nearer to the plant, that would
have been fattened in that area but come from you do not
know where. Would it be fair to say that you were just
taking cattle in the normal way that any business would be
taking cattle from that area; you did not have any
specific...? Do you know what I am saying? What I am
saying is that if the industry standard was--

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just let me interrupt for a moment. You say
200,000 cattle were killed at Barretos?
A. Yes.

Q. Then I thought you said about 20,000 came from your own
farms?
A. Yes.

Q. Then later, did I hear you say 20 per cent?
A. No, I said 20 give or take. I mean, it is ten per cent
give or take. But our total turn off from our farms is
approximately 20,000, and that would go to Barretos. So
some years it might be good and some years it might be bad,
and some years they might not kill 200,000, some years they
might kill 150 and some years they might kill 110.

MR. MORRIS: It is a rough guide?
A. Yes.

Q. My question was very badly phrased. What I am saying is,
that there are similar plants to Barretos dotted around San
Paulo; is that correct?
A. Yes.
