Day 015 - 21 Jul 94 - Page 47

1 because of the imbalance in the nutrients?
              A. Again, we are going from 5 to 6 or 7 per cent. So it
2 is still marginal. Again, I would remind you that our
calculations yesterday we worked on the assumption that
3 the diet would be related to a day where we were
considering the proportion of the order of 40 or 50 per
4 cent of calories. So I think we have been over this
              ground fairly thoroughly.
     5
         Q. Yes. If we look at meal 5, a woman eating meal 5 would
6 take in 1,044 calories, would she not?
              A. She would indeed.
     7
         Q. And 51 grammes of fat?
8 A. Yes. I will take your word for the calculation. That
              is 43.7 times 1.044.
     9
         Q. Right. And 23 grammes of saturated fat?
10 A. Again I would not argue with it.

11 Q. Right. That would leave her with 896 calories for the
              rest of the day?
    12 A. Yes.

13 Q. Is it right that her total maximum fat intake for the day
              is about 71 grammes?
14 A. Well, I would need to do the calculation, but again it
is 35 per cent of, well now, I am not sure, but we will do
15 the calculations anyway. You are probably about right.

16 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Would it be frivolous to suggest that a
woman who happily eats a Pizza Delux, a side salad, fair
17 enough, but also has chips with her pizza, is going to
find it difficult to stick to 1940 calories anyway if that
18 is the kind of appetite she has?
              A. Again, it is a principle I think we have already
19 established, that the more foods that are contained in the
diet that have got a fat content higher than that
20 recommended for the total diet, then the more difficult it
is going to be to hit the dietary recommendations for that
21 particular day. But again we have already discussed the
whole issue of whether we are talking about a day or a
22 week or a fortnight. I think that needs to be put into
              perspective.
    23
MS. STEEL: So are you saying it would not be OK to eat this
    24 every day?
              A. I have already said that if anybody chooses to eat
25 this, a diet which has a high proportion of high fat foods
in it, then it is going to be very difficult. Yes, I do
26 not think there is any disagreement between us on that at
              all.
    27
         Q. That is an accurate description of this meal?
28 A. Well, this meal here I think we can agree is roughly
about 50 per cent of the calories.
    29
         Q. From fat, is that what you are saying?
30 A. No, sorry, the total calories in there is about 50 per
cent of the recommended for the diet, assuming you want it
