Day 088 - 13 Feb 95 - Page 61

it is all used up they will have all other pork, indoor
       pork.

  MS. STEEL: So basically ----
       A. One thing we must make clear on the indoor pork, our
indoor pork is reared on straw.

  Q. But basically McKey's would get outdoor pork if there was
       some left over?
       A. That is correct.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I may have completely missed the point or
forgotten it, but the weaners that come from the indoor
sows being an indoor breed themselves, do they stay
       indoors?
       A. No. The weaners, because we have found the outdoor
kennel system to be extremely successful in rearing the
young weaner, all our weaners from whether they be indoor
reared or outdoor reared have that time in a kennel.

  Q. That is what I thought you were saying this morning. I was
rather thrown off course by the different breeds, some
       indoors and some outdoors.
       A. But on our -----

  Q. When they go into the finishing, when they go to finishing
       school, what happens then?
       A. What we do -----

  Q. Can they still be heritage four-quarter?
       A. We have to channel our outdoor reared pigs, our freedom
pigs and our heritage pigs, through special farms or
selected farms, so that will be all freedom food pigs on
that farm, all heritage food on that farm.

  Q. So they do actually live outside for the whole of their
       lives?
       A. No. I will try to explain again. All the Bowes'
units, whether indoor or outdoor, have the kennels, right.
When those pigs come out of those kennels we will take a
heritage production unit, that is outdoor. They will then
go on to farmer (A) who will be continuously finishing
heritage type pigs from that weaner all the time, so there
is a less chance of transferring or mixing pigs where you
can transfer disease, etc. Right. Then when you come to
freedom food pigs, they again would come out of their
kennels from the outside and they will ----

  Q. They were born in their arks?
       A. Yes.

  Q. They will have their outdoor kennels?
       A. Correct.

  Q. Then they will be sent to?
       A. To specified freedom food finisher farms.

  Q. Where they will remain out-of-doors?
       A. No. They then go inside straw-based systems.
