Day 102 - 13 Mar 95 - Page 52
bird has flapped its wings after hanging and the leg has
jumped out.

Q. How often has that happened?
A. Not very often.

Q. So that is where the bird has been trying to escape from
the shackles?
A. Possibly it is, yes.

Q. At No. 7 it says: "Pick up any birds that have fallen onto
ramp". What ramp is that?
A. Is this task No. 7?

Q. It is on the same page.
A. Task No. 6?

Q. No. 7.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The one at the very bottom is 7. Page 85,
5.12.
A. The ramp is the area in front of the hangers, that if a
bird jumps out of a crate as they are being hung on, there
is a ramp beside them that they actually would jump on to.
I think that is referring to picking those birds off that
ramp and hanging them on.

MS. STEEL: That is something that is fairly frequent because it
says "pick up any birds", so would that be right?
A. Yes, I mean, I think they do jump out of the crates
fairly often and -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: And you are not to leave them there too long?
A. That is correct, yes.

MS. STEEL: Because if you leave them there for too long they
are exposed to stressful conditions which results in a loss
of yield?
A. Well -----

Q. That is what it says there.
A. Yes, I mean that is one way of putting it. I would
just say it is unsatisfactory from a whole lot of points of
view.

Q. There are two killing lines the whole time, are there?
A. Yes, there are.

Q. When were the two killing lines brought in?
A. In 1993, I think.

Q. Manual killing, that is just for every bird that has not
been stunned properly, is it?
A. Yes, if a bird has not been stunned or if its throat
has not been cut correctly, then it is killed manually.

Q. There is also something called a "manual killing
emergency". Is that where all the bird are killed -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I just understand that last question?
