much time on generalities.
A. If I can draw your attention to chapter 17 here?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Give me the page numbers.
A. The first passage I would like to draw your attention
to is page 418.

MR. MORRIS: I do not know which bits you are going to refer
to, but anything that is a direct quote from McDonald's
representative would, I believe, carry more weight, if it
carries any weight, than a general commentary by the
author. If you can bear that in mind.
A. I hope you can bear with me because I think it is
rather important to understand the basic philosophy of
McDonald's as an organisation which I have already
characterised as being unethical, and I think this will
bear it out. Page 418.

MR. RAMPTON: Sorry, I do not want to interrupt Mr. Cox, but
I am a little uncertain of the basis on which this
evidence is being given; if it is simply that Mr. Cox has
formed certain views about McDonald's marketing attitudes
and policies as a consequence of having read this book,
that is one thing; I have no quarrel with that. If, on
the other hand, it is tendered as evidence of what
McDonald's themselves has actually said, then that is
another thing.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What I suggest is we hear the evidence.

MR. RAMPTON: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: And we can have an argument in due course or
a discussion in due course as to whether it actually is
evidence.

MR. RAMPTON: Yes. I just felt it right -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We hear the testimony and then we decide
later whether I can actually use it as evidence.

MS. STEEL: We cannot remember exactly when it was, but the
Plaintiffs did write a letter about this book saying
something to the effect that it was authorised, or
something like that. I cannot remember.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not want to argue it now. I am saying
that because you do not at this stage need to restrict
yourself to quotes from, for instance, or supposed quotes
from Mr. Ray Kroc, or something of that kind. We will
have it in. Hopefully, there will not be too much of it
anyway, and long after Mr. Cox has left the witness box we
can have our argument about whether I am really entitled
to take it into account or not.

MR. MORRIS: OK. Mr. Cox, do not spend a long time, but do
read out the quotes you want to.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have page 418.
A. Yes. This is the first, this chapter explains how
