Day 152 - 11 Jul 95 - Page 42

Q. The weekly summary was done manually, was it?
A. They were done manually, although when the payroll came
back there was a computer printout which we used to
get which was a payroll summary which came out with the
payroll and that detailed number of hours worked for each
person and their pay, and it highlighted any discrepancies
above a certain amount of hours. I cannot remember what
exactly those hours were, but if there was any particular
person working over and above a certain amount, then that
would highlight it.

Q. In those days was it theoretically possible for a Manager
-- I know you did not do it -- but was it theoretically
possible for a Manager to fiddle the clock cards so as to
get under 18s working past the proper time?
A. It would have been theoretically possible, but if he
was going to do it he would have to have the whole
management team in cahoots to be able to do that.

Q. Why is that?
A. Because I used to check it as a Manager and the Area
Supervisor, whoever that would have been at any particular
time, would also check the clock cards, and it would have
been blatantly obvious if there was any fiddling going on.

Q. What about nowadays? I understand it is all done by
computer nowadays?
A. Yes, the computer system at the moment will not
physically allow you to schedule a crew member past a
certain time if it falls without the guidelines of the
legislation. So if you try and schedule an under 18 female
past 12 o'clock, there will be -- as soon as you plug that
shift in for that person on the screen will come, you know,
not a viable scheduling system.

Q. Message not accepted?
A. Yes, I cannot remember the exact phrase, but something
of that nature.

Q. So physically now you could not do it?
A. No.

Q. Since when, if you can remember or perhaps you cannot, has
that computer been in place?
A. There are two computers that have been introduced since
that time. The first one is a computer which is known as
the Hunter program which is purely for clocking in and
clocking out, which is a computer card system, and
I believe that came in possibly 86/87, around that time.
Then the scheduling computer, which is like a much larger
computer with a database on it and a scheduling package,
that came out about 1990, as far as I recall.

Q. So is that the thing Mr. Stanton was talking about earlier
today, the matrix - or have I completely misunderstood it?
A. No, the scheduling package will have a matrix on it.
We actually used to use a manual matrix earlier in the
time.
