Day 086 - 09 Feb 95 - Page 54

MS. STEEL: It should be in the bottom right-hand corner.
A. Page 13, sorry, I apologise.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just read that through to yourself. Assume
that the longhand on it is accurate because we have no
other information about the publication.
A. OK. I have read that through now.

Q. Does that jog your memory in any way?
A. It does a little bit. I do not think it was in
Shrewsbury. What jogs my memory is the electronic beeps.
What jogs my memory is the electronic beeps. I remember
that we had been discussing the removal of chicken and
looking at ways that we may improve what we are doing in
the kitchen, and this may well have been where this came
from.

MS. STEEL: What exactly have you been discussing in relation
to that?
A. Well, we have been, as always, looking at ways that we
can improve our systems. I believe it came, someone
suggested that the sound of the alarms in the kitchen when
a product was cooked could be confusing, and it seemed to
be maybe something in, that if we had different noises on
each of the stations ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Someone may hear a beep go off and think it
was the chicken they are cooking when it is something else?
A. That is right. I think this was brought to me by Jill
that this may have been a better idea. I remember
discussing it with her. There may well be some merit in
it, but my thoughts on that was that we have lights that
flash at the same time as the beep going off, so it would
be a visual reminder as well as an audible reminder, so if
you hear the noise and see the light you know which the
basket that refers to. However, I think it may be of some
merit to look into further; it may be yet another of the
many safeguards to cooking products in the kitchen.

MS. STEEL: Did Jill mention any specific incident in relation
to this problem?
A. I am a bit foggy on the background. I get a report of
current things that are going on. I cannot remember this.
Maybe it has not come through to me yet as an issue.
I know she has consulted with me on it.

Q. She did not say about any specific incidents to you?
A. No. If it was in Shrewsbury then Mark Hatherway is the
regional health and safety officer for that area. He would
have dealt with it in the first instance, referred to Jill
if it needed further investigation. They are perfectly
capable of covering alleged food poisoning incidents. They
fully understand our system. If there is anything
particularly unusual then they may come and refer to me for
it. I believe that may well have been what happened in
this instance. I am not sure if it was Shrewsbury.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Would you go as far as this, that there was
probably some incident which prompted her to talk to you
