Day 081 - 31 Jan 95 - Page 48

       prosecution?
       A. I never actually dealt with any of McDonald's premises.

  Q. No, I presume that if it was going to be analysed it would
go back to the facilities that you viewed?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What you are being asked at the moment is
when you were at Sun Valley was there any kind of talk or
conversation at all about any complaints of food poisoning,
any prosecutions, samples coming back for analysis,
anything in that broad general area? Did you ask questions
or were you told anything about that?
       A. I was told that the meat is identified so that if there
is a complaint it can be traced back to a particular batch
dealt with at a particular time, so there is traceability
but I do not know about any particular case like this.

MR. MORRIS: So when you visited the laboratories of Sun Valley
and McKey's, and you asked them what they did, they did not
mention anything about following up complaints?
       A. No.

  Q. For some reason, I cannot get organised this afternoon.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What I suggest is just sit down -- everyone
loses their way some time or another -- and get yourself
set up for a fresh start. (Pause).

MR. MORRIS: While we are on that last subject, I did get
slightly confused. Do you know anything about a
salmonella, I mean through the profession or through
McDonald's, a salmonella being found in a product at
McDonald's at the end of last year?
       A. No.

  Q. In Shrewsbury in a chicken product, Chicken McNuggets?
       A. No.

  Q. You did not hear anything about it?
       A. No.

  Q. Do you monitor in your professional capacity food poisoning
incidents or follow the professional magazines on those
       kinds of subject?
       A. Yes, from time to time, yes.

MS. STEEL: Is there a problem in this country with food
       poisoning caused by Campylobacter?
       A. Yes.

  Q. There is?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is that a particular concern with poultry products?
       A. Yes, I think that is. I must admit, Campylobacter is
not a particular interest of mine.

  Q. It is not; it is not something you have studied then?
       A. I have not studied it in any depth, no.
