Day 008 - 07 Jul 94 - Page 27
1 because of their leadership role, they felt that they
possibly could pursue a special relationship with
2 McDonald's, and what I talked about. I think their
position, however, was somewhat unique at the time.
3
The Environmental Defence Fund believes in what they call
4 the third wave of environmentalism. Basically, this third
wave, if I could summarise it very briefly, basically
5 states that we need to find environmental solutions that
are also economic solutions. I think their broad tasks
6 with us from the beginning was to test that concept of
theirs and see if they can work with a company like
7 McDonald's, the size that we are, and can you mould
environmental solutions that indeed are economical.
8 Therefore, I think their hope was that this could serve as
a model for other companies.
9
MR. JUSTICE BELL: What are the first and second waves?
10 A. Oh, the first and second wave, they would be your
normal, if you look historically, your boycotts, your law
11 suits, more traditional environmental activist tools.
12 MR. RAMPTON: Did you say "ways" or "waves"?
A. The third wave of environmentalism.
13
Q. The third wave then is one which takes into actual
14 practicability of the solution on the ground in the real
world, is that what it is?
15 A. That is correct. It is taking perhaps the ideas and
applying them to the real business application.
16
Q. Are you telling us that the first and second waves are to
17 some extent -- perhaps to a large extent -- ignoring the
practicability of the solutions that they are composed, is
18 that what it is?
A. From my experience, I would say, yes.
19
Q. Are these three waves of environmental movement, call it
20 what you like, are they terms of art? Are they recognised
terms or not?
21 A. No, certainly not by the typical person within the
community. I would work in the environmental community.
22 I think it is a new way of thinking that many are getting
more knowledgeable about.
23
Q. I would like you just, as it were, to help me read some
24 parts of this document into the transcript, if you will.
I will ask you a question from time to time. I am not
25 going to read anything like the whole of it. I am not
going to read the great body of the document, the final
26 report, which appears at tab 5; only parts of the
Executive Summary. Can you tell me, Mr. Langert, because,
27 as I say, my page numbers have gone, where your bundle
page numbering starts in this document?
28
MR. JUSTICE BELL: 133?
29 A. 132 is the title page, the very first page.
30 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, that is quite right.
