Day 019 - 27 Jul 94 - Page 65
1 their necks cut to when they went into the scalding tank?
A. I am pretty certain that was measured.
2
MR. JUSTICE BELL: What was the period of time you were being
3 asked for then?
4 MS. STEEL: The previous one?
A. Neck cutting and scalding.
5
MR. JUSTICE BELL: But the one before that?
6
MS. STEEL: From stunning to neck cut.
7 A. These would have been measured, undoubtedly. Are they
in the February report, in fact?
8
MS. STEEL: I do not know if they are actually.
9 A. No, they may not be, yes, but the usual time for
processing plants is around two and half, in the UK this
10 is and it varies between countries, is around two and half
minutes bleeding period.
11
Q. Between neck cut and scalding tank?
12 A. Yes, but it can range up. I think the longest plant I
am familiar with is about four and a quarter minutes.
13
Q. What about the shortest time?
14 A. I am making an estimate here. That would be about one
and three-quarter minutes.
15
Q. Do you have any recollection at all about these time spans
16 in relation to Sun Valley?
A. I suggest you ask Mark Pattison this question. If you
17 want a working approximation, it is an approximation, it
might be in the order of two to two and a half minutes.
18 It is that sort of order for their plant.
19 Q. When you made this visit on 19th April, do you know what
time of the day the visit was?
20 A. This would have been the afternoon.
21 Q. You do not know roughly what time?
A. It would have been early afternoon, mid-day to early
22 afternoon.
23 Q. Do you know roughly how long you stayed there?
A. I am guessing. We did get involved with the Ministry
24 of Veterinarians. We had to give a long discussion with
them about the slaughter line and including those
25 discussions, I must have been there for three, three and a
half hours.
26
Q. Do you know when the breast comforters were introduced at
27 Sun Valley Poultry?
A. No, not precisely.
28
Q. Were they there on the previous visits that you have made?
29 A. Certainly for the turkey line which used to be in the
same building -- it got transferred -- also for the
30 broiler line, yes. I had seen them before this visit,
yes.
