Day 143 - 27 Jun 95 - Page 30
that in some stores in the US you mean to suggest you are
not allowed to bring food in or you suggest that that is so
in the UK ---

MS. STEEL: You are aware, are you not -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: -- you may get the same answer, you may not.
I would not have thought there is quite the same cultural
difference between the United Kingdom and the United States
as they might be between either of them and some other
countries.

MS. STEEL: You are aware, are you not, that in some of the
countries that McDonald's operates in it does not allow
crew to bring in their own food to eat during they meal
breaks?
A. I have never gotten into that issue. I am not aware of
that. I can -- that is something I have never gotten into.

Q. What issues do you get into when you go around the world,
Mr. Stein?
A. I get into compensation issues, I get into various
systems, employment systems, recruiting, retention issues.
I run the gamut of human resources.

Q. But not employee rights?
A. I do not understand that question.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, nor do I.

MS. STEEL: The right to bring their own food into the
restaurant to eat, for example?
A. My Lord -----

Q. Into the crew room?
A. I would think that the management of a local country
can manage themselves in something such as that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you see that as an operational matter ---
A. Absolutely.

Q. -- rather than an employees, Human Resources matter?
A. Absolutely, my Lord. I personally have never seen it
raised as an issue, so I -- when you are providing either
free food or half priced food, people are generally very
happy to receive that, so it is not an issue.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you do have a particular instance of where
it happens, then do put that to Mr. Stein; you do not have
to. I am merely suggesting. I suggested it before and you
put the generality again, but if you do have a particular
situation in mind, then now is your opportunity to put it,
if you want to.

MS. STEEL: In the UK, Mr. Stein, crew members are not allowed
to bring their own food into the store to eat in the crew
room during their breaks; do you think that that is
acceptable?
A. That is their decision. I would not -- if that is the
case, that is their decision. I would not interfere with
