MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, I have some ----

MS. STEEL: Page 44, bundle page 44.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 11,800 in 53 countries. By the end of 1995,
18,400 restaurants in 89 countries.

MS. STEEL: Right. That is in the 1995 annual report.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: I think they have opened up in India this year, so
it is at least 90 by now, I should think.

Then the leaflet goes on: "This means the constant
slaughter, day by day, of animals born and bred solely to
be turned into McDonald's products." Since figures have
increased since the fact sheet was written, it obviously
follows that even more animals have been born and bred
solely for McDonald's products.

The document that I have just referred you to in the
defendants' original list of documents does state on the
last page -- it is not the last page in that tab, but it is
the last page of that particular document -- it says that
in 1984, following the successful launch of Chicken
McNuggets, McDonald's - the world's largest user of beef -
is now the world's second largest user of chicken.

I have not got Behind the Arches with me, but on pages 3
and 4 of that book it also says the same thing. I think
that that they are behind Kentucky Fried Chicken in terms
of being the largest user of chicken.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: And just on this point further, Fernando Gomez
Gonzales, who is in yellow 9, tab 4, at page 3 of his
statement he says: It is certainly true that McDonald's
uses enormous amounts of beef and is probably the single
largest user in the world.

And he then says: I attach Appendix 1, a document showing
the volumes of beef consumed by McDonald's in the USA in
1988, 1989 and 1990. And that is the 1990 Gee Whiz
numbers, which I think are produced by the McDonald's
Corporation. And in actual fact it does not only give the
figures for the amount of beef use, it also does it for
chicken. And the total for 1990, the total beef used was
497,869,128 pound of beef, 177,040,456 pounds of chicken.
And, adding up, there are three columns for pigs, which are
sausage, Canadian bacon and bacon round, they come to
107,845,534 pounds.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: When you give figures, take them a little
more slowly. The last one was 177,040,456, was it?

MS. STEEL: That is right, yes.
