Day 197 - 07 Dec 95 - Page 70

     A. Yes.

Q. If you diluted the mix with significant quantities of
water, then the shake would be much heavier and icier than
it ought to be, would it not?
     A. It would be if you did not do it at busy times,
because what you would actually do is as opposed to
putting a whole container in in one go which would have
that effect, over the course of a two-hour lunch time you
might put it in over a gradual period of time, so it did
not all go in as one lump because then it would be
     noticeable at the other end.

Q. Do you remember when you were I think it was a First
Assistant that your first performance review was conducted
by Frank Stanton? If you look at page 15 of your
performance review file and then at page 17 -- 17 has "SF
RJR 9th April 1986" at the bottom?
     A. Yes.

Q. It looks as though Frank Stanton did this one. At this
stage you were I think a First Assistant?
     A. Yes. This is the review where I was actually promoted
at the end of this review.

Q. You were actually appointed First Assistant?
     A. First Assistant at the end of this review, yes.

Q. On 1st April 1986. Turn to page 16 under "Quality": "You
must combine attitude, floor control and job knowledge and
put to them to making quality a big issue in your
management development. Your priorities have to be to
increase crew awareness in this area. We make promises
that we have to keep, so that we can continue to grow as a
company." Those are promises to the public, are they
     not?
     A. That is what they are relating to there.

Q. To the customer?
     A. Yes.

Q. Then he asks this question: "Do you know what constitutes
a quality shake?" Do you see that?
     A. Yes.

Q. Do you still say that it was Mr. Stanton who originated
this idea of watering down milk shakes?
     A. That is where, to the best of my knowledge, it
     originated from.

MS. STEEL: May I just ask something which is I am not sure
whether Mr. Rampton is challenging what the witness was
saying about this being the time when he was being
promoted to First Assistant, but it does actually say that
     on page 17.

MR. RAMPTON: No. I said it was just after.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just after. It is eight days afterwards.
