Day 014 - 20 Jul 94 - Page 67

1 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Sensible in the sense of a sensible diet or
sensible in the sense that ---
     2 A. In the sense -----

     3 Q. -- a 16 year-old would actually eat all that?
              A. I doubt very much if there would be many people who
4 visit McDonald's that many times in a week.

5 MR. RAMPTON: We have the figures.

6 MS. STEEL: Can I clarify something?

7 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not think there are many 16 year-old
English boys drinking low fat milk?
8 A. We do not have that in this country. It is
semi-skinned which is about 1.6 per cent fat.
     9
MS. STEEL: Did Professor Wheelock say something about the
    10 calculations were right?

11 MR. JUSTICE BELL: My recollection is he said he had no reason
to doubt that the calculations were accurate.
    12
MS. STEEL: What calculations are you referring to?
    13
MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you did your sums, by working out what
14 was contained in each of those items you would come within
               -----
    15
MS. STEEL: We are not supposed to have a page with figures on
    16 it.

17 MR. RAMPTON: No, it is probably a reflection of what is said
in the right-hand side of your page 64: "The meal plans
18 are consistent with current US dietary guidelines
including the recommendation of fat be limited to 30 per
19 cent of total calories." I am not suggesting Professor
Wheelock has done any calculations on these menus. I am
20 asking you for an overview, whether it looks sensible from
              a dietary point of view?
21 A. Yes, in my view, it does.

22 Q. Perhaps an unnecessary and somewhat silly question.
Provided they stuck to that sort of diet for the rest of
23 their days, would you have any fear on these grounds for
the health of either the 16 year-old boy or the 46
    24 year-old woman?
              A. In the light of our current knowledge, no.
    25
         Q. I accept that science develops and knowledge may change,
26 of course. You have done some calculations. Would your
Lordship like to see the coloured version? Shall I just
    27 hand it up?

28 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. (Handed) I was thinking about this
last night. Mr. Rampton, what would help in due course is
29 if someone can do a list of all these brochures and
booklets we have, otherwise I may just have to do it
30 myself. But we have had various ones in relation to
advertisements and nutritional booklets. We may have
