Day 009 - 08 Jul 94 - Page 19

Q. When it was up to a thousand stores, what year was that
2 again?
A. We reached our pinnacle in the summer, late summer of
3 1990.
4 Q. Right. Say, for example, if I just pluck a year out, say
1987, would there have been a handful of stores or no
5 stores doing recycling post customer waste?
A. I was not involved with the environmental issue at
6 that time, but my knowledge of it would be that we had no
restaurants having consumers' recycling packaging. We
7 would have had a certain amount of restaurants recycling
corrugated boxes.
8
Q. You work worldwide. Is your brief worldwide for the
9 corporation as a whole?
A. My main emphasis is the United States. I direct
10 directly impact our environmental initiatives in the
United States. My role worldwide is to serve as a central
11 conduit for the whole world to provide both information,
technical advice, and to bring all the best ideas and
12 technology together and share them with the McDonald's
worldwide system, so we can maximise our environmental
13 performance in each of our countries through the specific
country managers who are in charge of the environmental
14 issue in their country.
15 Q. You are aware of what the circumstances are in each
country, that is part of your brief to understand what is
16 going on in different countries?
A. That is part of my role. I believe today we are in 72
17 countries. I think there are 170 odd countries in the
world. I do not want to leave you with the impression
18 that I know what we are doing to the detail in all these
countries. My role is to delineate the most significant
19 features of our programmes, so that if New Zealand -- if
New Zealand has some sort of -----
20
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Might I suggest you leave it there. If you
21 are asked a question about a particular country and you do
not know you say so, if your knowledge is limited say so.
22
MR. MORRIS: Is there any country out of those 72 that is as
23 far advanced as the USA as regards use of recycled paper?
A. Are you referring to the McDonald's system?
24
Q. Yes, I mean McDonald's.
25 A. In the use of recycled paper.
26 Q. Whether it is post or preconsumer?
A. There are several countries that have significant uses
27 of recycled paper. I could not tell you whether it was
more or less because I do know that we use significant
28 quantities of recycled paper across the world in different
countries.
29
Q. For example, there must be many countries that use very
30 little recycled paper?
A. We use recycled paper in all countries.
