Day 124 - 10 May 95 - Page 28
whatever, anything that might discredit the Company outside
of their actual work for the Company, why should something
someone does outside of the Company be relevant to
McDonald's?
A. Why should it be relevant?

Q. Why should it be any of your business?
A. Well, I think it would be extremely important. I would
not want to hire an individual that has raped someone.
I would not want that individual in my employ -- would you?

Q. I am not an employer but -----
A. My point is I certainly would want to know whether or
not the individual that I am hiring has been guilty of any
felonies, has robbed another place of business ---

Q. You said something -----
A. -- has acted dishonourably in public, would have done
something that would have brought disgrace to the good name
of my Company.

Q. Would that apply stronger and stronger the higher up the
official concerned was?
A. Yes.

Q. In other words, if you are promoting someone to Vice
President or whatever ---
A. Yes.

Q. -- that is even more important ---
A. Yes.

Q. -- what they do, OK. So, when Ray Kroc made his $250,000
donation to Richard Nixon, then that is something which the
Company must have not considered brought dishonour on the
Company otherwise they would not have allowed him to do it,
would they?
A. Allowed him to do it? I mean, that was his personal
choice.

Q. You would not want any of your management, and he is at the
top, to do anything -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just put it straight, that no-one in
McDonald's would have thought it disreputable for Mr. Kroc
to donate a quarter million dollars, assuming that he did
so, to Mr. Nixon's election campaign fund?
A. No.

MR. MORRIS: So you are quite happy for the people in the
hierarchy of your Company, effectively, to bribe
politicians?
A. Bribe politicians?

Q. Yes.
A. Of course not. I mean, the fact that Mr. Kroc made a
contribution to Mr. Nixon's campaign, that was his
prerogative; that was his choice.

Q. It was just at the time -----
