Day 096 - 03 Mar 95 - Page 19

  Q. You have got straw on the concrete, yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Then is there a grated area at the rear of the pen?
       A. Yes, as I described when I was here previously, to get
rid of the urine and the muck.

  Q. But as was shown on the video, that would be fairly
       similar, would it?
       A. Well, similar, yes, I will accept similar.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: When you say the concrete is insulated, do
you mean apart from by straw?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What is immediately on top of the concrete?
       A. The concrete is about 37 ml. of concrete and then you
       have leca immediately underneath.

  Q. Have?
       A. Leca.

  Q. What is that?
       A. A by-product of the coal industry which is insulation
material. Sometimes we will have styrofoam.

MS. STEEL: So how often would they be cleaned out?
       A. Every day, every day -- sometimes twice a day.

  Q. That is part in the dunging area, the grated part?
       A. Yes. That naturally falls through but, according to
how the pigs behave, they will actually be cleaned out
minimum once a day and as needed. You know, that is a very
critical and important area to look after young pigs.

  Q. How often would the straw be changed then?
       A. A minimum of once a day.

MR. MORRIS: So when you said before in your evidence that the
pigs were let out for five-minutes to have a walk ---
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- that is their cleaning time?
       A. That is totally to the pig managers' discretion, a
person who is, whether it be man or woman, who is in charge
of the farrowing area. That is absolutely to their
       discretion.

  Q. What I am saying is the reason for letting the pig out
because they need to be able to clean that area?
       A. Yes -- no, no, no.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What is being put to you, I think, is that
the cleaning time will be used as the opportunity to let
       the pig -----
       A. That works well together, sir.

  Q. There is not a special time when he is taken for a walk,
she is taken for a walk, you will use the opportunity of
       cleaning out to ---
