Day 030 - 03 Oct 94 - Page 74

I have one of them, which is the Diet, Nutrition and
Cancer report prepared by the National Academy of
Scientists in the United States in 1982. I gather there
is also one from 1989 which I do not have.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you have that there?

THE WITNESS: I have them here, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you just hold it up?

MS. STEEL: I do not know whether this would be something that
Mr. Cannon would be happy with, but a suggestion might be,
in terms of some of the documents that Mr. Keen produced
that were books, we did not get provided with full copies
of those. In fact, we did not get provided with anything
at all of those books. But they were apparently made
available for us to inspect. I do not know whether
something could be arranged along those lines.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The problem with is, you see, what I guess
is that Mr. Rampton would like to have a copy at least of
the whole book. He can then decide how much he reads
himself, how much Mr. Atkinson reads, how much anyone else
reads, whether he asks an expert witness to look through
it. But what he will need is a copy of the book for some
       days at least.

MS. STEEL: But the position was the same with us.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I know. If you had said: "How can we get
hold of a copy to keep?" I would have carried on then the
discussion which I am carrying on now.

MS. STEEL: I had presumed because the Plaintiffs were happy
to do that for document that their witnesses were
referring to, it might be all right for, you know, they
might be satisfied with the same from our witnesses.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: They are not and they perfectly entitled to
       see the whole thing.

MS. STEEL: I am not saying they should not be able to see
it. It is a matter of providing copies. They are rather
       huge.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is why we are having this discussion.

  THE WITNESS: Can I help?

MR. MORRIS: We do not have copies of the books and we
certainly cannot afford to buy them, or even copy some of
them. That one there is about 1500 pages.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It may be.

THE WITNESS: It is a good buy though!

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just sit down for a moment and see where we
       get to.
