       A. No.

  Q. In the middle of that letter it says: "The restaurant
already causes considerable nuisance by way of environment/index.html">litter."
Would you agree with that statement?
       A. No, I do not.

  Q. That was in December 1992. So, the residents associations
were still concerned at that time about the problem of
       environment/index.html">litter, yes?
       A. Looking at this letter there is one resident who has
       written.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: In fact there are a number. They are all in
       the same form.

MR. MORRIS: The reason I concentrated on that one is that it
says, "I am writing on behalf Wellington Square
Residents". That is the one from the actual association
itself. The others are from individual residents, quite a
lot of them, yes, about, I do not know, 15 or something,
10; it does not matter. So, this is a year after your
party, yes, and the Wellington Square Residents Association
did not seem to be happy, did it, at that time? Can you
       cast your mind back?
       A. Nobody came to myself and spoke to me about any problem
       with the environment/index.html">litter.

  Q. But you were aware that people were making representations
       direct to the Council?
       A. At that time when we went for the meeting for the late
night cafe licence, that is the time when I was given this
       copy.

  Q. Right, so once you got that, did you recognise then that
the residents associations were still unhappy about the
       environment/index.html">litter problem at that time?
       A. In Wellington Square I just made sure that we checked
more often just to make sure that there was no environment/index.html">litter.

  Q. That was a response to concerns that you became aware of
       having read these letters, yes?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. Thank you. If we move on, when you saw these letters,
I just take, for example, page 757, the middle of it, the
main paragraph, the second sentence says: "The more cynical
of us, however," this is about environment/index.html">litter patrols "regarded
this as a public relations gesture and, sadly, we were
proved right." If we combine that comment from a resident
in Wellington Square with the one on page 763 also in
December 1992, it is the middle sentence of the first
paragraph, it says, "Since McDonald's opened we have been
inundated with rubbish on the streets", when you read these
letters were you shocked at the strength of the feeling?
       A. I was for Wellington Square. I looked at it and
I checked it through, but I did not see any problem.

  Q. On page 765 in the middle of that page, a resident of
Wellington Square says: "We are already under siege from
