1 else? Glad you asked. No artificial preservatives for
starters. So what is in there? Wholesome milk, natural
2 sweeteners, a fluid ounce of flavouring and stabilizers
for consistency. And that is all". The question I have,
3 Mr. Horwitz, is this: Within the fluid ounce of
flavouring, was there an artificial preservative?
4 A. Yes, there was.
5 Q. Do you remember its name?
A. I believe it is sodium benzoate.
6
Q. What was its purpose?
7 A. Its sole purpose was to preserve the flavouring during
shipment from the factory to the restaurants.
8
Q. Does that kind of flavouring last forever? Does it
9 persist for all time?
A. It usually does not have an opportunity to at
10 McDonald's because it goes rather quickly. I would like
to add, though, that in terms of this very small amount of
11 preservative put into the flavouring, it dissipates over
time.
12
Q. Is there any preservative in the milk?
13 A. Not that I am aware of.
14 Q. Or in the milk shake mix?
A. Not in the milk shake mix that I am aware of, no.
15
Q. Was there a stabilizer, it says there was a stabilizer for
16 consistency, in some part of the milk shake?
A. Yes. I believe that is called sodium
17 hetamexaphosphate.
18 Q. Then we see a chart telling us how much calories, protein,
carbohydrates, fat, cholesterol and sodium is in the milk
19 shake?
A. Yes.
20
Q. Then what percentages those constitute of the recommended
21 daily allowance. The next point is about calcium, saying
that the bun contains calcium like English muffins; then
22 two pages on a picture of a kitchen implement, yes?
A. Yes.
23
Q. "How we are getting a handle on cholesterol". What is
24 that implement?
A. That looks like a fry basket, a basket within which
25 you would place french fries or chicken McNuggets.
26 Q. "How we are getting a handle on cholesterol" written beside
the handle of the fry basket. "At McDonald's we use two
27 different shortenings to cook our food. We use 100%
cholesterol-free vegetable shortening to cook our Chicken
28 McNuggets, Filet-O-Fish and pies.
29 We use a specially blended beef and vegetable shortening
to cook our world famous french fries and hash browns. It
30 is one reason they taste so good. Still, a regular order
of our french fries is surprisingly low in cholesterol and
