Day 032 - 06 Oct 94 - Page 68

I am correct in thinking they mean first the medium and
then the mean, they are saying that medium which is the
50th if you were to put them in ranking order, would have
eaten 0 burger, but that the mean is 160 grammes because
what you are finding is that half of children are not
eating them at all, maybe just over half; whereas those
that do eat them are eating quite a lot of them.

  Q. But nothing like as much as they are of chips?
       A. That is not surprising, is it?

  Q. Not the least bit, which is why I wondered how it was that
burgers got pride of place in your statement?
       A. Because for those that are eating 116 grammes of
burger meat is quite a lot of burger meat. Four ounces a
week is quite a lot. A pattie is generally around two
ounces, I believe, so that is two burgers a week.

  Q. Four ounces of burger meat a week would give you something
like 4 per cent of your saturated fat content for the
       week, would it not?
       A. If you say so. I have no ability at this point to
       check those figures.

  Q. If I eat a McDonald's meal a week, I must balance that
with my diet not for that day but for the rest of the
       week, must I not?
       A. This is where the problem of balance comes in. One
does not recommend balance; one recommends a healthy
diet. If you insist on eating unhealthy foods, then I
would encourage you to try and eat healthier foods as
       often as possible.

  Q. Unhealthy food, as I think you said earlier, if McDonald's
put cyanide or strickening in their buns, they would be
       dangerous, would they not?
       A. I would agree with that.

  Q. If they were genotoxic they would be dangerous?
       A. If they were toxic in any way I would suggest that by
       definition they would be hazardous.

  Q. As one meal would be dangerous?
       A. Of anything toxic?

  Q. What is the difference between hazardous and unhealthy?
       A. I am using the word "hazardous" or "unhealthy" perhaps
in the sense of increasing the risk of the dietary
       disease.

  Q. Only if you eat it consistently?
       A. If you eat it sufficiently perhaps. The trouble is
that the risk obviously is different for different persons
and different for different diets given genetic and other
factors, but when increases one's risk by consuming these
       types of nutrients.

  Q. People have almost infinitely varied lifestyles?
       A. Yes, of course.
