Day 071 - 11 Jan 95 - Page 36
I think he was talking about the number of bags that were
put outside.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That was not the question he was asked; it
may be what the answer was.

MR. MORRIS: Can I just go back then and start again?
(To the witness): When you had the old system of the bags
on their own, not compactable -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us pick up where the question was.
Mr. Morris asked you how many bags of rubbish are collected
on an average per day by your environment/index.html">litter patrols?
A. All right. Well, they would often, as they did one
trash walk they would keep -- we have a lift area outside
the restaurant. They would often fill the bag maybe a
third full or a quarter full, and then when they came to
the next trash walk they would take that bag back out
again.

Q. Mr. Morris was asking you at the end of a pretty average
day how many bin liners of refuse collected by the environment/index.html">litter
patrols would you have -- just doing your best to give a
stab.
A. In the winter, four or five; in the summer, possibly up
to 10.

Q. Is that post-barrow ones where they have been compacted
down or -----
A. This is pre, before they have been compacted.

Q. Pre, this is when they just went round with a black bag in
one hand?
A. Yes.

MR. MORRIS: So are you saying that your environment/index.html">litter pickers that go
out on a trash walk every half hour all around those
streets on average may come back only with a third of a bin
bag full of environment/index.html">litter? That is in the old days with the
non-compacted environment/index.html">litter?
A. It is possible. I mean, I have not measured it in any
way. I have only seen it in the day-to-day running of the
restaurant. You know, I cannot bring it down to the amount
of times I saw them with a full bag or a third bag. I am
not sure I have seen with full bags and I have seen them
with half bags and third bags. I cannot give an exact
amount of rubbish that they collected from the streets over
a period of a day.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you want to ask any more questions on that
specific topic or do you want to break off there?

MR. MORRIS: We might as well carry on just a little bit with
this topic, if that is OK?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, certainly, but you pick a moment
convenient to yourself within the next few minutes to stop.

MR. MORRIS (To the witness): Have you done a trash walk
yourself?
