Day 015 - 21 Jul 94 - Page 50

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which tab?
2
MS. STEEL: Tab 15. Was this survey actually the whole of it
3 completed and finalised?
A. As far as I know it was, yes.
4
Q. We have only part of it, but this is a survey of staff at
5 McDonald's stores. On page 200 we have a summary of the
survey. There is the number of times there that the
6 employees eat at McDonald's a week. You see under four to
six times per week 61 per cent of employees are eating
7 that often ----
A. Yes.
8
Q. --- at McDonald's.
9
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which page are you looking at?
10
MS. STEEL: Page 200. 6 per cent of McDonald's staff are
11 eating at McDonald's seven times a week or more -- it is
six plus which means seven or, seven times or more.
12
MR. MORRIS: It must mean seven times or more.
13
MR. JUSTICE BELL: It would appear to me to mean seven times or
14 more. Where do we actually -- is that why you said the
questions are incomplete because they only go up to -----
15
MS. STEEL: Yes.
16
MR. JUSTICE BELL: They go up to four or more but different
17 things. Anyway, that is apparently the summary of the
survey. Though how they can possibly get those figures
18 from -- I see. It would be in answer to the second
question under "Eating Habits". The first question:
19 "Eating Habits - How many times a week do you eat at
McDonald's?" Yes, thank you.
20
MS. STEEL: On the first page we do not have the breakdown of
21 how many people eat salads. For some reason that has not
been included?
22 A. No, it was not.
23 Q. Are we to presume from that that McDonald's did not think
it was important?
24 A. No, it is, because salads do not apply in all the
restaurants. So it would not have made sense of the
25 survey because the survey was not just restricted to those
restaurants where salads were only on -- salads were on
26 sale.
27 Q. Having seen that 6 per cent of McDonald's employees are
eating at McDonald's or eating McDonald's meals seven or
28 more times a week, does that concern you?
A. Well, it depends what they are actually eating, does
29 it not, because certainly I have not accepted that every
meal or every item in a McDonald's restaurant is outside
30 the dietary recommendations.
