Day 287 - 25 Oct 96 - Page 23

not know. It is said to be due to a switch between the
high and low pressure areas in the Atlantic north and
       south.

MR. MORRIS: Well, only a few weeks ago I read something which
said that there was now going to be a consensus --

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Fortunately, I have had no evidence on that.

MR. MORRIS: Well, I read that there was now consensus on
scientists that the world was heating up through the
greenhouse effect and it couldn't be explained away by a
       temporary phenomenon.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, you have not read all the things I have
       read.

MR. MORRIS: Right. If I can just find -- I have not --
sorry. (Pause) I think that Professor Duxbury also dealt
with the methane issue. We will pray in aid whatever he
       said on the subject.

And finally, obviously, I have not mentioned our Brazilian
witnesses that deal with the soya issue. I am sure that
you are very well aware of that.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: And finally, that on the general damage that
cattle ranching does to the environment, we would also rely
on the evidence of Howard Lyman in the witness box on the
general damage to the soil and flora and fauna.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Right.

MR. MORRIS: I will just have a quick look, in case there is
any very important thing I have missed out or anything.
(Pause) Just one point. Obviously regarding the
destruction of the environment issue in this case, the
packaging issue relates to that, so that will be coming up
later. That is all really I have to say.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, thank you. Well, we will adjourn until
10.30 on Monday, when I will hear what Ms. Steel wishes to
say in relation to rearing and slaughter of animals.

The note which I have given you is an attempt to help you
focus on some matters which may help me in your
submissions, both in relation to animals and generally. It
is no substitute for forming your own view of what you
should say and what it is in your interests to say with the
benefit of such advice from outside as you are able to
obtain. So in so far as it may appear to express a view on
what the law is or is not, I treat it in that way, trying
to focus you on where there may be a question or a
       problem. 10.30 on Monday.
