Day 266 - 20 Jun 96 - Page 28

  Q. After Roman 5?
       A. Yes.

  Q. There is an unnumbered paragraph?
       A. Yes.

  Q. And after that there is one which begins: "New total
       diet," which is in italics?
       A. Yes, I see that.

  Q. "The new total diet which is well within today's broad
scientific consensus would consist in energy terms of
protein 11 per cent, and no change is recommended." Do
       you see?
       A. Yes.

  Q. "Fat 34 per cent, a reduction". And you remember that when
the COMA panel came out with its recommendations in 1990, I
think it was, or 1991, they said 35 per cent?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So it is substantially the recommendation are the same are
       they not?
       A. Well, that 34 per cent.

  Q. Yes, it does, does it not?
       A. It depends whether you include the alcohol as part of
the recommendations or not. If you look further on the
report, the NACNE Report, you will find it says 30 per cent
of fat, and the reason for that difference is because it
depends on whether you include the alcohol in the
       recommendation.

  Q. I absolutely accept that, that is what the COMA panel said
       too, was it not?
       A. Yes.

  Q. "Carbohydrate 50 per cent, an increase. Alcohol 5 per
cent, a reduction, total 100 per cent" -- surprisingly.
What is your present state of knowledge Miss Brophy, or
       Mrs. Brophy?
       A. I do not mind, I am happy to accept either.

  Q. Mrs. Brophy because I am old fashioned if you do not mind.
What is your present state of information about the role of
alcohol in the diet and health of people who drink?
       A. Alcohol at above a particular level is harmful.
Alcohol at very low levels in some populations, some parts
of the populations, is thought to be beneficial but I can
give you more information about that if you wish.

  Q. Well, I have lots already, thank you. You know the queer
paradox of the French heart mortality statistics, do you
not, as compared with this country?
       A. It depends what you mean by that.

  Q. They have far more of the wicked fats, cheeses, butters,
meats than we do, but their mortality rate from heart
disease is about quarter of ours, and do you know one
hypothesis which has been attributed to explain that is
