Day 161 - 24 Jul 95 - Page 16

managing the shift, the Running Shift Manager -- perhaps
I may have misremembered. But, Mr. Rampton, was the Floor
Manager who was working said to be working the 18 hour
shift running the restaurant as a Floor Manager, or just
       operating as a Floor Manager?

MR. RAMPTON: I have no idea. I have taken this from
       Miss Tobin's statement.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will take it either way.

(To the witness) If you were the Shift Running Manager
(whether First Assistant, Second Assistant, Restaurant
Manager or Floor Manager) stepping in, what proportion of
your shift do you think you would spend on your feet?
       A. Eight to nine hours.

  Q. What proportion, though? Eight to nine hours out of how
       many?
       A. All the time you would be on the floor. If you are
Shift Manager, you have to be on the floor at all times.

  Q. So, if you sit down, it is only just for a moment or two?
       A. If you -- somebody will cover your shift for you to
have a break in between that.

  Q. Or if you have to do a little bit of documentation, or
       something like that?
       A. That is correct; and that will be -----

  Q. The Floor Manager is the same if he or she is just running
       the -----
       A. No, it is not. The Floor Managers do get a proper
break. They can go from the floor and have 45 minutes if
       they are working eight hours.

  Q. But when they are working, they are on their feet?
       A. That is correct, sir.

MR. RAMPTON: When you were, let us say, a Floor Manager --
what, at Twickenham was that, or Hounslow?
       A. That is Twickenham.

  Q. -- did you do eight hour shifts or nine hours shifts
       sometimes?
       A. Yes, I did.

  Q. With a 45 minute break?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. How old were you in those days?
       A. I was 24.

  Q. How did you survive your eight or nine hour shift with a
       45 minute break?
       A. It is fine. Initially, when I started, it was tiring,
but I got used to it.

  Q. Do you have any objection to working hard?
       A. No.
