Day 032 - 06 Oct 94 - Page 60

left because it is black and white, a column headed: "Who
is the balance of good health for?" in bold. I would like
to read this out. "Who is the balance of good health
for? The balance of good health is based on government's
eight guidelines for a healthy diet: Enjoy your food; eat
a variety of different foods; eat the right amount to be a
healthy weight; eat plenty of foods rich in starch and
fibre; do not eat too much fat; do not eat sugary foods
too often; look after the vitamins and minerals in your
food; if you drink alcohol, keep within sensible limits".
This is 1994 and, presumably, has the government's stamp
       of approval, as Mr. Morris might say, something like that;
       is that right?
       A. These are, indeed, the government's eight guidelines
       for a healthy diet, yes.

  Q. Then can I ask you to put that volume away -- I am sorry
about the inconvenience -- and to pick up volume VI
again? Turn, first of all, please, to tab 6 which is a
leaflet we looked at a moment ago for what was attributed
to Professor David Conning: "McDonald's Food - the Facts"
published in 1989. That is five years ago, five years
before the government's eight guidelines were reproduced
in the document we have just looked at.

I would like you to turn, please -- you will find, I hope,
it is legible, stamped by the people who made up the file,
at the bottom of the page a number and I would like you to
turn to page 17. You should see, I hope, Dr. Lobstein, a
heading: "What is a healthy diet"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. If you could read it through. I would like you, if you
will, to read that page and the next to yourself and tell
me when you have finished reading those pages.
       A. I think I have the gist of it.

  Q. You see all the stuff about exercise on page 18.
       A. I do.

  Q. Now would you turn -- that is 1989 -- on while you are at
it, please, because I do not want to have to come back to
this document, to page 36 where we see "Nutritional
Analysis". I gather that one of your complaints about one
of the earlier McDonald's documents was that it did not
separate out saturates from total fat content. By July
1989, at least, if that is the date of this document, it
had done so, had it not?
       A. Yes, the trouble being that I think it was very hard
to get hold of this document.

  Q. That may or may not be, Dr. Lobstein, have you made an
attempt to get hold of this document?
       A. I did at the time of writing the book.

  Q. When did you write the book?
       A. 1987.

  Q. This document is dated 1989, so it is no miracle you could
not get hold of it in 1987?
