substances?
A. I think I have commented on that, that I know of no
study published in the scientific literature providing
direct evidence of that. However, the Hyperactive Children
Support Group have numerous reports that BHA and BHT
trigger hyperactivity.

As I said before, unlike the nitrates, it is relatively
straightforward to obtain products; the only difference of
which is the presence or absence of those antioxidants.

Q. I realise I have asked that question before, but on the
other symptoms of intolerance on our list from the original
pleadings, which is in many ways superseded now, for BHA,
which Professor Walker said was based on some evidence, we
put: "Can cause raised lipid and cholesterol levels in the
blood".
A. Now, that is -- there I would draw your attention to
the paper by Fisherman and others in Annals of Allergy in
1977.

Q. The number?
A. Well, it is 54 and then it, presumably, has got a
subscript assigned to it. 54(d).

Q. Is it the Serum Triglyceride?
A. And Cholesterol Levels, yes.

Q. That is the third one.
A. I believe it is, yes.

Q. Do you want to point to the relevant conclusion?
A. Well, the abstract which is printed above the title of
the paper, albeit written in rather opaque medical prose,
indicates that they are providing evidence from, I believe
it is, a sample of 85 patients amongst whom they found
direct evidence that BHA and BHT raised a level of
triglyceride circulating in the blood, certainly suggests
that these compounds are not pharmacologically inert in
raising, yes, raising .....

Q. This applies to BHA and BHT, does it?
A. That is my reading of this paper, yes, indeed.

Q. And, having read that, what are the symptoms or effects of
such a reaction, or is that just a contributing effect to
other problems with high cholesterol levels?
A. I think it is. I think that is precisely right. Yes,
in fact, I wrongly characterised it a few -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If we look, IAD is intrinsic allergic
hypersensitivity diseases.
A. Yes.

Q. On the last page, just above the references: "The
significance of this information suggests the importance of
the deranged metabolism as a factor in the genesis of IAD
associated with chemical hypersensitivity (intolerance)
states and may lead to newer or different modalities of
understanding and therapy in these syndromes". Is that the
