Day 088 - 13 Feb 95 - Page 42
was largely based upon what the RSPCA saw at his
establishment, why then one could confidently say that so
far as the leading body of animal welfare people in this
country is concerned, he has the stamp of approval.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I understand that but he was being asked what
they had said about it, in effect.

MR. RAMPTON: I leave out -- I did not actually ask him, what I
did ask him -----

MS. STEEL: I thought official bodies had no status in this
court.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is a silly remark, quite frankly.

MS. STEEL: But it is a fact.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: From time to time Mr. Morris, particularly,
has prayed-in-aid official reports, or it has been said on
one side or another that the mere fact that something is
"official", in inverted commas, does not matter and I just
have to weigh everything for whatever value I think I can
get from it.

MR. RAMPTON (To the witness): Let me ask it another way,
Mr. Bowes. You have spent a lifetime in pigs, yes?
A. That is correct, sir.

Q. Have you read this document?
A. Yes, sir.

Q. Do you think that from the point of view of the animal's
welfare this document provides an adequate standard?
A. Yes, sir.

Q. Is it a good standard of animal welfare husbandry that is
set out here?
A. Very good, sir, and may I add that we are continually
trying to improve in the areas that modern technology can
help to improve.

Q. Before you started consultations with the RSPCA about this
code, had the standards which you have described in this
court been in place in your business?
A. Yes, sir.

Q. For how long?
A. Since, well, since 198 -- since 1986 or 7 we have been
marketing these self-same pigs as Norfolk free range pork
in Tesco's stores, and prior to that, outdoor pig
production and straw production -- I just go back
generations in our family.

Q. Do you have respect for the RSPCA's animal welfare
standards?
A. Yes, we do, sir.

Q. Are you anxious -- I say "anxious" to comply, you already
were -- to maintain compliance with the standards laid down
