1 mostly suppliers to Perseco, and when we were called in to
say: "Not only does your biggest customer want to come in
2 and talk to your top, senior management, your top R&D
specialist, but we also want to bring in the Environmental
3 Defence Fund", it did take a fair amount of dialogue to
convince them of that, but they all agreed.
     4
         Q. I was going to ask you, was there anybody amongst your
5 suppliers who resolutely refused to open their doors in
              the end?
     6 A. No.

7 Q. Can we then go over to the section headed: "Highlights of
McDonald's Action Items", on page 140, I think it is?
     8 A. Yes.

9 Q. "Source reduction", which you told us is really, as
I understood it, by some way the leading consideration in
    10 this area?
              A. Yes.
    11
         Q. "In a major source reduction step endorsed by the task
12 force, McDonald's is completing a switch from polystyrene
foam 'clamshells' to paper-based wraps for packaging its
    13 sandwich items".

14 MR. MORRIS: Sorry, which page?

15 MR. RAMPTON: 140: "In a major source reduction step endorsed
by the task force, McDonald's is completing a switch from
16 polystyrene foam 'clam shells' to paper-based wraps for
packaging its sandwich items". This document is dated
    17 April 1991, right?
              A. Correct.
    18
         Q. When was the switch from polystyrene foam to paper-based
    19 wraps completed?
              A. It was completed by that date.
    20
         Q. By this date. By the time this document was published, as
21 it were, it had been completed?
              A. Yes, the physical aspect of doing it was done.
    22
         Q. I want to interrupt this document at this point to ask you
23 why the switch was made?
              A. OK, back -- the decision making process in 1990?
    24
         Q. I want to know why McDonald's decide to switch from
25 polystyrene clam shells -- polystyrene foam clam shells to
              paper wrap shells?
26 A. What was going on in the McDonald's system in the
United States was two dynamic processes. One, I already
27 described; we were, we thought (and still think) that
polystyrene packaging is an excellent package with a lot
    28 of great attributes.

    29 Q. Excellent packaging?
              A. Excellent packaging with excellent packaging
    30 attributes.
