Day 192 - 27 Nov 95 - Page 21
middle. There were high bacterial levels in the milkshakes
and the sundae things, like, in the machines; and also
where you make your sundaes, there are different sauces,
like, in containers, and there are a lot of fruit flies in
the cherry and strawberry ones.

Q. So, basically, there was not much difference between the
two?
A. Not that I -- no, not that I noticed.

Q. I just want to see if there are any more general questions.
I am looking at your second statement now, page 20. You
said in your last paragraph on page 20 that there were a
lot of people talking about problems at work. Can you just
describe the atmosphere -- say in 1993, before you actually
started organising the union -- the atmosphere amongst
employees, in terms of people talking about problems at
work?
A. There were a range of problems from health hazards and
work and safety from -- slippery floors; a girl fell down
once and broke her foot, because the floors were very
greasy and they were too tough to clean, to get all the
grease off them. I had friends burn their hands in the
vats, because they are rushed. Like, one gentleman was --
like, you are constantly rushed at McDonald's, it is "go,
go, go". That is their things; they want you to be as
quick as you possibly can.

It was during the morning shift where there is hash browns,
and one of the hash browns had fallen out of the rack that
you put it in the deep frier, and he was in such a rush,
management was "go, go, go", that he stuck his hand in the
vat to grab a hash brown. He just did not even think.
Another friend of mine has been burned by hot coffee there.

Q. So, I am just trying to get the atmosphere, in terms of
people talking about their problems. What did people do;
did they just come to you?
A. No. People just talked amongst themselves about how
management was feeling today, how they were being treated,
what had happened to them, how their day at work was --
because you would talk in the crew room, when one person
was coming off a shift and when one person was starting,
day staff talked about how they were during the day, what
to watch for. Is that clear?

Q. Yes, thank you. Sabina Iurillo said in court that she had
never complained about conditions at the store. Has she
ever complained, in your knowledge?
A. Yes. She -----

Q. To whom?
A. She had complained about, you know, not getting enough
hours; and then I believe she got a job at Northern
Reflections at the mall, the mall in Orangeville. When Cam
found out about this, she had told me that he had said to
her that she was not being totally loyal to him, that she
should either quit Northern Reflections or quit McDonald's.

Q. So she complained to you, did she?
