Day 186 - 10 Nov 95 - Page 08

comment, pursuant to a request dated 9th March 1991, the
meanings that we have set out, the meaning for this section
of the leaflet from "fast = junk" onwards is set out at
       meaning D of that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, I have read that.

MS. STEEL: I do not know where it is.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If we can find .....

MR. MORRIS: It is on page 8 of the Abstract, chapter 3.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, I have that.

MS. STEEL: That is the comment.

MR. MORRIS: Sorry, that is the comment.

MS. STEEL: It is on page 7 of the Abstract.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: The meaning that I have written for H, or as
equivalent to the Plaintiffs' H, is: "The type of food
sold at McDonald's encourages over-eating, because it is
lacking in bulk and also because its high sugar and sodium
content can lead to a craving for this type of food."

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: "This increases profits for McDonald's, but when
people over-eat this type of food it can lead to problems
such as constipation, clogged arteries and heart attacks."
That is the end of the meaning. I think that we should
note that this paragraph does not refer to cancer; it
refers to clogged arteries, heart attacks and
constipation. "Constipation" was not mentioned in the
first paragraph, so it is referring to not all the same
       things as the first paragraph.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: I do not really know whether it needs any
explanation, but the food being lacking in bulk, the reason
it leads to over-eating is because it does not fill you up,
keep you filled up for very long, and also if you do not
have to chew food much, you tend to eat more quickly; so,
eating more food before you feel you have had enough. That
is just to explain the part in the meaning about
encouraging over-eating because of lacking in bulk.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let me just read through your two meanings
again, because I was concentrating on writing them out.
       Yes?

MS. STEEL: Then I wanted to go on to say, well, basically,
those are the meanings of the text. Then, do the headings
add anything, or the cartoon? We would say the answer to
that is "no". The heading: "What's so unhealthy about
