Day 014 - 20 Jul 94 - Page 73

1 go before he gets his actual meal?
              A. Yes, if you relate it to the actual intake in the
2 country it would be an even smaller proportion.

3 Q. Yes, it is just over a quarter?
              A. That is right.
     4
         Q. Look at the fibre. I will not do the same exercise with
5 the child because everybody can do it for themselves.
Look at the fibre, please, Professor Wheelock. You
6 remember that the panel gave a DRV for fibre. Again it
must be taken as a broad figure of 18 grammes a day for
     7 adults?
              A. That is right.
     8
         Q. Here you have calculated that there were 16.3 milligrams
     9 per calorie?
              A. That is right.
    10
         Q. That means 0.0163 grammes per calorie?
    11 A. Yes.

12 Q. Multiply 0.0163 by, whatever the figure is, 759 and you
get 12.37 grammes of fibre from that meal alone, do you
    13 not?
              A. That is right.
    14
         Q. Which is, I think, something like 68.7 per cent of his
    15 DRV?
              A. Well, given that they have expressed a range of 12 to
16 24, it actually creeps in at the bottom end.

17 Q. I know, but can I ask you this question? This is really
the question in this case so far as these two substances,
18 fibre and sodium are concerned. Is that meal high in
              sodium?
19 A. No, it is not.

20 Q. Is it low in fibre?
              A. No, it is not.
    21
         Q. We see that in a number of cases the sodium content is
22 lower and the fibre content is higher in these meals, is
              it not?
23 A. That is right, compared to the rest of the diets we
              have worked out.
    24
         Q. I hope I have that right.
    25
MS. STEEL: Which one were we looking at?
    26
MR. RAMPTON: Meal four, table two. Professor Wheelock, given
27 that this meal only, and I use that word ironically,
supplies this consumer with about 68 per cent, 69 per
28 cent, of his DRV for fibre for the day, where could he
confidently expect to get the rest -----
    29
MR. JUSTICE BELL: In fact, the meal is the lowest of the five
30 for sodium, is it not?
