Day 073 - 13 Jan 95 - Page 35

Finland. So, they would not have been plantations but they
were sort of semi-natural forests, you might say.

  Q. Is that sort of the general set up in Finland?
       A. Of semi-natural forests or?

  Q. I mean, what is the general standard, say, southern Finnish
-- I think the evidence has been that McDonald's paper
supplier is based in southern Finland -- the general
       forestry in that area?
       A. Well, it seems, well, most of the forest that have been
felled at the moment are the older forest which, to a great
extent, regenerated with a little bit of help but more or
less naturally, but what they are saying here is that the
guidelines on felling have not been adhered to of leaving
       rotting timber, things like this.

  Q. This is which year are we talking about?
       A. That was 1992, they say, I think.

  Q. So what is your conclusion from that?
       A. My conclusion is that the forest industry at that time
in southern Sweden and central Sweden -- sorry, southern
Finland and central Finland were not adhering to the
official guidelines of, presumably, the Ministry of
Forestry and Parks on this particular document. My
conclusion is on a more recent thing is that where you are
up north and near the border (where, in fact,
environmentalists should not have been because it is a
military zone) where people could not see things happening,
in fact, the industry is not adhering to the guidelines.
This Kareila area is a military zone. You need special
permission to go in there because it is next to the Russian
       border.

  Q. OK. If we move on -- if I could have the reference back?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The area in the north you are talking about
       is Kareila, is it?
       A. Kareila, yes.

MR. MORRIS: The next reference is No. 14 regarding
Czechoslovakia. In your statement you have done a page on
Czechoslovakia, page 39. Could you say what the reference
is? I have not a copy now.
       A. The reference is a document from the Czech Ministry of
Environment in the agriculture -- sorry, it is from the
Czech Ministry of the Environment and the document is
called "Environment of the Czech Republic".

  Q. What is the date?
       A. The date is 1990 -- well, the publishing was 1990.

  Q. Some kind of official report?
       A. It is an official report, yes, since the disappearance
of the communist regime, they split up.

  Q. You informed me the internal page 47 -- I have not a copy.
       A. In fact, there are a number of -- let me just see.
