Day 138 - 20 Jun 95 - Page 65
McDonald's poultry supplier, but McDonald's continued to
place orders with the firm. This policy was only changed
when the UFW subsequently extended their boycott to
McDonald's."

It looks simple enough. Whether what is first expressed as
a premise gives rise to the conclusion is another question
on which I do not need your help, thank you, Mr. Stein, but
what I do ask you is this: Was there a dispute between
Tysons, who do supply chickens to McDonald's, and this
union, the UFW in Arkansas in 1983?
A. Yes, there was.

Q. Do you know about it personally?
A. Yes, I do.

Q. Were you personally involved?
A. Yes, I was.

Q. What was the nature of the dispute between the union and
the company Tysons?
A. If I might for a moment, Tysons was the supplier of our
Chicken McNuggets.

Q. We know that, we have had weeks of evidence about that,
Mr. Stein?
A. They built a brand new processing facility in
Nashville, Arkansas. That facility was organised by the
United Food and Commercial Workers and Tysons recognised
the union as the representative of their people in that
facility. Collective bargaining ensued.

Q. Yes?
A. And during that collective bargaining the parties were
not able to reach agreement and the union then decided that
they would bring pressure to bear upon Tysons by picketing
McDonald's stores with leaflets.

Q. We are going to have a quick look at some of these leaflets
in a minute, Mr. Stein. Did they just use the leaflets in
the streets outside McDonald's?.
A. No, sir, they did not.

Q. What else did they do with them?
A. They did use them in the streets in three cities of the
United States.

Q. Which cities were those?
A. St. Louis, Kansas City, and I think it was Little Rock,
Arkansas, I know it was Arkansas. They did do that with
placards and with leaflets in those 3 cities. They also
mass mailed leaflets, hundreds of thousands of these
leaflets, through to residents, if you will, on a mass
mailing basis in about 7 States of the United States.

Q. Is this one of the big national unions?
A. Yes, it is. It is one of the largest unions in the US.

Q. And this is one of unions which might, although it does not
arise here, be interested in recruiting McDonald's workers
