Day 030 - 03 Oct 94 - Page 45

       A. Probably earlier in the report. I cannot remember
immediately but if I can explain it now; it is probably
not germane to this case to look at the first two
columns. Probably the only column that is worth attending
to, the column to attend to is the last one, I think,
total, so if you take -----

  Q. What should I write in between "Total" and "Yes" and "No",
so that one would know instantly what the column meant.
That is what I am asking. Take your time.
       A. Sure. "Everybody" governing the first column means
the entire population referred to in the report which
might be the world or might be the population of the UK.
"High risk" means groups of people within that population
identified clinically as being at high risk of the disease
in question. I think almost invariably cardiovascular
       disease having angina.

  Q. That is precisely what I am asking. I think I am being
more simple than you think, Mr. Cannon.
       A. Forgive me. Then the "Total" is those two taken
       together.

  Q. Can I put it, one just looks at it, to be absurd, it could
be everybody dislikes and then "yes" or "no", or everybody
eats and then "yes" or "no"; do you see what I mean?
       A. Yes, I do. To take the example of Total Fats, of the
One Hundred Reports 93 have an opinion -- no, 94 have an
opinion on Total Fats which is on the right hand column,
the 93 and the one taken together. Of those 94, 93, say
eat less fat and one disagrees.

Taking the first two columns together then, of those
reports 85 say that everybody in the population should
consume less fat with one disagreement; a further eight
say that people, only these sections in the population at
high risk should consume less fat with no disagreements,
and so on down the page.

  Q. So if we take your Total Fats as an example, because that
is a less item, 85 reports say that everybody should eat
       less total fat?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Eight reports say there is a high risk in eating total
       fat?
       A. No. They would all say there is a risk in eating high
fat. They are saying that what they do is focus their
attention on just that subset of the population who might,
for example, have clinical angina or be obese or something
       of the sort.

  Q. Then when we get to a "more" item like fibre?
       A. Yes, so that the 85, 1, 8, nil, 89, 1, in effect, are
saying those reports say eat less total fat; whereas, as
you have referred, I think, with fibre they are saying
        -----

  Q. 85 say eat less fat, eight go further still and say there
would be a high risk unless you do eat less fat?
