Day 079 - 27 Jan 95 - Page 36
McDonald's?
A. Yes, most modern abattoirs now wash.

Q. How long has that been going on then?
A. I do not know the answer to that question but it must
be over 15, 20 years.

Q. OK. How many animals per day are killed in the
slaughterhouses supplying McKey's?
A. By McKey's? You mean total?

Q. Supplying McKey's.
A. Supplying McKey's? I could not tell you that but, I
mean, you have got very big abattoirs like Midland Meat
Packers who are killing up to 4,000 animals a week.

Q. A week?
A. Yes.

Q. How many days would they be open? Is that seven days a
week or five days a week?
A. Five days a week. I mean, it depends entirely on the
size of the abattoir and the design of the line and the
technical things that they have.

Q. Right. What about, say, Jarrets then?
A. Jarret would be killing about 200 animals a day, I
would estimate.

Q. Is Jarrets one of the smaller ones? I mean, I know Midland
Meat is a particularly large one, but, say, the other 73
companies that you take meat from, you know, roughly are
they bigger than Jarrets, smaller than Jarrets or what?
A. About the same as Jarret and some bigger than Jarret.
I mean, Jarret is in the smaller end of the scale of meat
suppliers.

Q. Is Midland Meat the largest one that there is?
A. I believe so, yes.

Q. You are currently taking from 59 suppliers; is that right?
A. Yes.

Q. Do you take from all 59 every week or what?
A. Yes.

Q. You do? Right. How many local veterinary officer
inspectors are there at each abattoir?
A. A minimum of one but in some of them three.

Q. So, say, a high volume one like Midland Meat, that would be
three, would it?
A. Yes.

Q. Then one that was the volume of Jarrets would be one?
A. Yes.

Q. Can I just ask you about something that is in your
statement? I do not know whether you have still got that
there?
