Day 161 - 24 Jul 95 - Page 24

MR. RAMPTON: Pink XIII, my Lord. I think this is the same
document as the handwritten one that Ms. Steel wants to
refer to. I should have told your Lordship this the other
day, but I forgot, I am afraid. The original is one of
those old faxes which would not copied properly, so
Mrs. Brindley-Codd has, in effect, improved the copy we
       have in the file.

MS. STEEL: (To the witness) Have you the last page of that
       tab?
       A. I have.

  Q. It is a memo to Corinne Reed from Roy MacIntosh?
       A. Can you tell me which page it is?

  Q. I think it should be the back page of tab 108.
       A. I do not have it. (Handed) Thank you.

  Q. You have got a copy now?
       A. Yes, I have, thank you.

  Q. It has some figures for the Strand store. It says: total
       crew 198 (pretty close to what you said); full-time, 31;
part-time, 167. Is that what you recall? I mean,
obviously, it may not be the exact numbers, but are they
about correct as far as you know?
       A. Sometimes it is slightly higher. That is the lowest it
gets to, 31, but just lowest it can get to. 40/60 is the
highest on the extreme case, and then -----

  Q. Sometimes you had 40 full-time staff?
       A. That is correct.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 60 the highest, did you say?
       A. Full-timers?

  Q. Yes.
       A. 40 the highest.

MISS STEEL: What was the maximum number of full-time employees
that you had, just of crew and Floor Managers, not of
       salaried -- in fact, I think it is just crew -- of crew;
what was the maximum number of full-time crew that you ever
       had?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Floor Managers -- before we go on -- would be
included in "crew", as I understand it?
       A. Every hourly paid person is included in it.

  MISS STEEL: Is it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. OK.
       A. I cannot give you a number. I would just say between
30 to 40 per cent of my employees are full-timers.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Would you like to think about that again,
because, according to this, about 15 per cent were
       full-time.
       A. I meant 31 to 40 in number, not in per cent.
