Day 077 - 25 Jan 95 - Page 36

  Q. How recently were you last at Jarrets?
       A. At Jarrets?

  Q. Yes.
       A. Last week.

  Q. Do your people go to Jarrets regularly?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Do you have any cause for concern that Jarrets may not be a
       well run organisation?
       A. No, I do not have any cause for concern. Jarret has
just had his EEC inspection and has passed with an
       increased mark over last year.

  Q. What about Midland Meat Packers at Crick? Are they a
       reputable establishment, in your view?
       A. Yes, I would say they are the biggest abattoir and the
most professionally run abattoir in the United Kingdom --
       or one of them.

  Q. Does what Dr. Gregory wrote in his reports of the visits
that he made to those two establishments accord with your
own observations of them when you have been there?
       A. Yes, it does.

  Q. I would like you to look, please, at a plan. It is a brown
plan, a floor plan. I do not know where Mrs. Brinley-Codd
had it -- his Lordship has, I think, the original.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It has stayed there for several weeks,
Mr. Rampton, but it is the one we looked at in December.
Do you have a copy in court?

MR. MORRIS: Yes -- well, I have reduction copies.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You have something you can look at at any
       rate?

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: Would you like a bigger one?

  MR. MORRIS: No, thank you.

MR. RAMPTON (To the witness): Yellow IX at tab 9 you will find
a statement that you made, one of the statements, the first
statement you made, for the purpose of these
proceedings. It is the last document before 9A. You have
it? Thank you very much. I am not going to go through
this in detail with you, Mr. Walker, because there will be
other witnesses coming later in the case who will deal with
the detail of it. But just take a couple of minutes to
have a look at it, then I will ask you a question about it
       or two.

How does that strike you -- this is, at any rate, I think,
so far as I know it is what is there now, but we will see
about that later in the case -- at the present day as a
slaughtering facility, how do you rate it?
