Day 204 - 15 Jan 96 - Page 10
fortnightly, but the clock cards were added weekly in the
store.

Q. Let us suppose someone had worked actually 24 hours one
week and 26 hours another ---
A. OK.

Q. -- and then they get their payslip; and it would have the
total number of hours, I assume?
A. Yes, certainly it would.

Q. And it should be 50?
A. Yes.

Q. They would have to notice that it said 49 and remember
that, in fact, they had done 24 hours one week and 26 the
other, in order to appreciate that they had lost an hour;
is that right?
A. You are correct, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let me make a note. (Pause) Yes?

MS. STEEL: I want to clarify something. You said that when you
had the manual clock cards it was all totalled up at the
bottom on a Saturday, or -- it says "or a Saturday", but
I presume a Sunday. When you went in and you saw that you
had been cut short an hour, was that after this totalling
had been done or was that something completely separate?
A. Once you actually got the clock cards, you totalled the
clock cards up, you then transfer the information from the
clock cards on to a payroll report, and that payroll report
then gets sent off to Head Office, so everyone gets paid
for what they have worked. What I noticed this discrepancy
of was -- my second clock card was incorrect on the payroll
report itself; there was actually a difference of one hour,
and I commented to Ray about that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a minute. When the Husky came in,
how could an ordinary crew member notice then? What would
they have to notice in order to appreciate that they had
lost an hour on their payslip? They do not have the
mechanical advantage of seeing the clock card, looking at
their clock card in their hand?
A. Well -----

Q. Can they see what their weekly total is each week?
A. No, but they can ask, they can certainly ask.

Q. They can ask. But would there be anything which they would
see, just as a matter of course, which would tell them?
A. No. May I also add that when a person actually clocked
off on the Husky, also, when they actually come in the next
day, you could still see when you clocked out from the
previous night.

Q. I appreciate that. But, as I understand it, the clock card
does a total, so that when you come to the end of the week
on the clock card you could see that you had worked
24 hours or 26 hours?
A. Yes.
