Day 192 - 27 Nov 95 - Page 41
separate the two, we used to call the younger crew
part-time. So, I mean, usually 18 and unders would take up
the extra shifts.

Scheduling flexibility allows you to book off dates you
need off, as well, switching shifts when you need to. You
are allowed to take days off, that was not a problem, but
if you had to switch a shift, it was very difficult to do
because the management did not like you doing that a lot of
the time.

Q. But what they are saying here is that this would be an
advantage without a union. Whether the union opposed to
people booking their days off in advance?
A. No, but they are promising that you can switch a shift
just like that. But you cannot, you know. They get very
strict about shift switching.

Q. So, it is a false promise, and not true about the union's
position as well?
A. That is true.

Q. Right. Anything else?
A. I do not agree with them saying that it was equal
treatment for all, because it was not. Some people were
treated poorly and others were treated like God.

Q. Was the union opposed to equal treatment for all?
A. No, they were not, but without a union in that store it
was not equal treatment for all.

Q. Do you think this leaflet accurately describes what the
union stood for?
A. No.

Q. Do you think this leaflet accurately describes what the
management stood for, and was -----
A. Yes.

Q. Management? No, I mean -----
A. What they wanted to do, yes. Is that what you are
asking me?

Q. But in terms of the characterising conditions in the store,
under that section "your advantages without a union", does
that accurately summarise what the reality is; do these
things all take place?
A. No.

Q. No. We can leave that leaflet there and look at the third
document, document number 3. Can you explain this?
A. I do not have it.

Q. Sorry. (Handed) Can you explain what this leaflet is, or
this document?
A. This is a leaflet that was put out by the union to help
to explain to the employees the facts of unions and their
role and what -- you know.

Q. Is this around the same time as the other two documents?
