Day 030 - 03 Oct 94 - Page 41
will tell me what is in one bundle and what is another,
I do not suppose absolutely page by page, but section by
section presumably.

MR. MORRIS: If we go to that series, we start off with your
book -- in some ways I would prefer to leave that until
the end. We will just start off with the book. It is
No. 1 in the list. "Food and Health: The Experts Agree",
would you like to take us through the pages which you want
to refer to and the specific points you would like to
make, because I am not absolutely clear which particular
points you want to make.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Does Mr. Cannon have a copy of the list of
page references which you gave me?

MR. MORRIS: He had identified them himself for us. Do you
have these? (Handed to the witnesses)

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Borrow that, Mr. Cannon. At the bottom you
will see the page numbers?
A. All that has been done here is that in chronological
sequence of the book, not necessarily in a logical order,
passages which are relevant to the points being made on
diet and cancer have been highlighted. I am not sure we
need to go through them all, quite honestly. I mean, we
have covered some already. If you want to go through them
in chronological order, Roman figure V is the page in
which the book's epigraphs are printed. The relevant one
again is the statement from Sir Richard Doll, also the one
from the Executive Summary of the WHO Report in 1990. The
one from Sir Richard Doll I have already read. The one
from the WHO Report is also there to see. Do you want me
to read it?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. If Mr. Morris specifically wants you to
read out loud, he should ask you but otherwise I have read
them.

THE WITNESS: Thank you. Going further forward, 83 to 87.

MS. STEEL: Could you hold on a second?

MR. MORRIS: Just one point on the statement by Sir Richard
Doll on that page where he says: "There is broad
agreement amongst research workers that the type of diet
that is least likely to cause disease is one that provides
a proportion of calories in wholegrain cereals, vegetables
and fruit", etc. When he says "broad agreement" was that
a general opinion of the time worldwide, this is 1982?
A. Yes.

Q. Just for the record -----
A. And science is an international undertaking.

Q. I think if we refer to the point but do not read it out,
if you just basically point to it for the transcript, the
second quote asserts that there were established clear
links between dietary factors and the risk of developing
various diseases including -----
