1 of the paragraph) excluding discretionary salt?
              A. Yes, 3376.
     2
         Q. 3376?
     3 A. Yes.

4 Q. It is only an estimate. As between 1600 and 3376 for a
man, most of whom are larger than women, would you like to
5 suggest what would be ---- The Panel declined to give a
DRV. Would you like to suggest what might be a sensible
6 figure to aim at for one's own good health?
              A. I think that is pretty well an impossible question to
7 answer, but my view is that it would certainly be
advisable for food manufacturers to look at products that
8 are ---- You know, we have now reached the point where I
think it would be advisable for food manufacturers to look
9 at products which are making a substantial contribution to
the salt content in the average British diet.
    10
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Look at them ----?
11 A. With a view to reducing the amount of sodium.

12 MR. RAMPTON: One wants to be absolutely, shall I say, clear
about these things so far as one can: You decline (and I
13 understand for very proper reasons) to suggest ----
              A. What I can say is that I have been doing another
14 study, and there are certain products which I have
identified which are producing up to five grammes of
15 sodium per serving. I would have thought it would be
sensible to reduce that a bit if possible.
    16
         Q. Were those McDonald's products?
    17 A. No.

18 Q. Can I ask you this: Would you say now in the light of up-
to date knowledge that a daily intake for a man of 3376 mg
    19 a day was excessive?
              A. I think it would be prudent to try to reduce it.
    20
         Q. To go down?
    21 A. Yes.

22 Q. But not, it would appear, below 1600?
              A. Oh, no.
    23
         Q. We will with his Lordship's permission we will return
    24 after the adjournment.

25 MR. MORRIS: May I ask one question?

26 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Tell me what it is first of all.

27 MR. MORRIS: The RNI which is recommended at 1600mg for sodium-
in the beginning when we looked at the glossary it said
28 the RNI "is an amount of a nutrient that is enough, or
more than enough, for about 97 per cent of people in a
    29 group".

    30 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.
