Day 151 - 10 Jul 95 - Page 12
talking about something which happened some time ago.

MISS STEEL: Yes, I realise that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I know you have a document.

MISS STEEL: He just said I am getting into Human Resources,
which is not really his area, but I was just picking him up
on that, because I thought it must be a part of his job
that he has to be aware of at least something to do with
it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not know how much of a part it is, once
you are general manager. If the date is important to you
and you think Mr. Stanton can help, he having said that he
thinks there was a change at the time he said but he cannot
recollect when it was, you can put the document to him, or
you do not need to put the document to him, but I may not
attach much weight to his evidence when he is being so
provisional about it. If you want support for the
inference you seek to draw from the document from
Mr. Stanton, put it to him.

MISS STEEL: As part of the functions of the supervisor, you
would have to know about rates of pay, would you not; you
would have to be able to check on whether the crew were
getting the right pay level?
A. Sure, absolutely.

Q. So it is not something that was nothing to do with you?
A. No. In terms of making sure that, I suppose, under-18,
over-18 rates, I guess I would have had to check on those.
But if you ask me what the starting rate was when I was a
supervisor in Clacton or Colchester, I am afraid I could
not help you on that either.

MR. MORRIS: (Pause) I am just trying to find a document,
because it was brought up before.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If anyone else knows it, perhaps they would
volunteer.

MS. STEEL: I did have a note of it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Maybe Mr. Atkinson knows where it is.

MR. ATKINSON: The change of policy, that is at tab 27 of pink
volume XII.

MR. MORRIS: Thank you.

MISS STEEL: (To the witness) If you read the second paragraph
of that. It is a memo dated 11th June, 1987. Does that
refresh your memory?

"This year, for the first time, everyone will receive the
increase in their basic pay in addition to any performance
reviews they have received, e.g., if you were 15 pence over
the old rate you will remain 15 pence above the new rate."
A. It does not make me remember it but, certainly, I take
