Day 198 - 08 Dec 95 - Page 25

       you have mentioned ---
       A. No.

  Q. -- was present at any such discussion?
       A. No, no-one else would, no.

  Q. I have got form my own view on all the evidence as to
whether it stopped at Area Supervisor or not, if it got
       that far.

MR. MORRIS: Mr. Rampton asked you about your letter that you
wrote and you said that the meetings were after you wrote
       the letter?
       A. That is correct, yes.

  Q. It is an obvious question, but were they a direct result of
the letter? Did they say: "We have received your letter"
        -----
       A. It was a direct result of the fact that I was
resigning. So, obviously a direct result of -- the
meetings were called because I was leaving and they were
informed of me leaving because of the letter, so yes.

  Q. Right. Is it normal practice in the Company for when a
Manager threatens to resign or does resign that there are a
       number of meetings?
       A. They want to know why. I mean, there is a report, if I
remember correctly, like if a Trainee Manager leaves or
something, that is filled in as to why that person has left
       and what the reasons were.

  Q. So what happened to you would not have been unusual?
       A. I was not surprised that the meetings were called, no,
not at all. I mean, I would have expected -- that was the
idea of the letter because, as I said, I wanted to get some
sort of reaction and try to force some sort of change to my
       circumstances.

  Q. Right. You say a report is normally done, as far as you
       are aware?
       A. I know there was some sort of leavers' report that is
actually done, that is, why the person left that -- there
is a code for different things. I cannot remember exactly
how it was laid out, or the wording of it, but there was
something, if someone actually left it was filled in that
actually would say why they were left, what they were
dissatisfied with or whether they were not up to
       performance or whatever.

  Q. Thank you very much for coming to give evidence.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you tell me, did you go into the Army
       from school?
       A. Straight from school, sir.

  Q. What part of the Army were you in, what corps or regiment?
       A. I was in the infantry, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.

  Q. How long did you spend in the army?
       A. A few days under six years.
