Day 059 - 01 Dec 94 - Page 77

said -- I thought I made it very clear to you -- I just
said that there may be a plan to expand but I am not aware
of it. I am not responsible for this programme and I am
       not involved in this programme.

  Q. You are not aware of why it has not been expanded so far?
       A. I am not aware that it is not going to be expanded in
the future which was your question.

  Q. But are you aware of why it has not been expanded in the
two years that it has been going?
       A. We were getting all the experience we needed from these
       restaurants.

  Q. Yes, but the purpose of this recycling programme was not
       just for experience, was it?
       A. Was it not?

  Q. You are saying it was? You are saying it was just for
       experience?
       A. I think you were asking me the question, were you not?

  Q. Are you saying that this recycling programme that you have
been running in Manchester was just for experience?
       A. No.

  Q. You are not.
       A. I do not think I have ever said that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I wonder if you may be slightly at
cross-purposes because whether it is worth expanding the
restaurants, no doubt, depends on how far the recycling
plant has actually got. Is that actually functioning yet,
so that whatever you put in from the five restaurants is
actually recycled at the plant, or are you still working on
       that? Can you say?
       A. That is a very good point. Yes, I can say. I went to
Lin Pac two years ago and I asked them if we could expand
this programme to include 50 restaurants. They said, no,
they were not in a position to do that as yet because so
much of the operation is a hand operation. They have still
not indicated to us that they are in a position to operate
a recycling programme from 50 restaurants. Therefore, we
have left the recycling programme at five restaurants
       currently.

MS. STEEL: To expand it would be labour intensive is their
       worry?
       A. They are also not sure -- that is part of it, but they
are also not sure that they would have a ready market for
all of the materials. I do not know that they have the
conversion equipment in their converting factories to be
able to convert the recycled material, so it is a two-fold
       thing.

  Q. What is happening to the recycled material at the moment
       then?
       A. I do not know what happens to it at the moment. You
must ask Lin Pac if they are coming in as witness.
