Day 247 - 10 May 96 - Page 59
A. I have it.

MR. MORRIS: "We are well on our way to becoming recognised as a
company working to tackle the environment/index.html">litter problem rather than
the Company responsible for it".

Helen was saying earlier on about how you like to associate
with certain -- she said distance issues or organisations
in order to improve the McDonald's image by association
with somebody that is doing something worthwhile like the
Tidy Britain Group for example?
A. We have done a lot of work with the Tidy Britain Group.

Q. If you look at the top of the page, the right-hand column:

Both McDonald's and the British Athletic Federation are
successful organisations sharing the ideals of team work,
courage and dedication to achieving their targets."

At the bottom, the last complete paragraph, it says:

"Sponsorship of athletics is designed to emphasise the
clear energetic contemporary image of McDonald's, giving
both high profile exposure and exposure at grass roots. It
is the most popular sports amongst our customers. It
promotes the nutritional value and quality of our products
and aims to drive volume through its stores."

you are trying to associate yourself with worthwhile
organisations in society in order to improve your own image
and to promote, as you say, the nutrition value of your
food in that case and to improve your profits. Would you
accept that?
A. I would, definitely, and the association is very much a
two-way stream. It works both ways or the other party
certainly would not do it.

MS. STEEL: When you were giving evidence-in-chief, you said
that McDonald's food would have no effect in causing
degenerative diseases even if you ate McDonald's meals 6
times a week.

If you felt that your customers' health was at risk as a
result of the food that they were eating at McDonald's, and
the contribution that made to their diet, would you take
any steps?
A. If I thought our customers were in danger in any way I
would take whatever I thought was endangering them off the
menu in a second.

Q. Would you take any steps if you felt they were eating too
much of your food as opposed to one specific?
A. The quantity they wish to eat of at McDonald's is
governed by many things, primarily them. If I am able to
satisfy their need or want I think they should come in as
often as they wish. I will, however, continue to provide
them with information about making intelligent choices,
balancing their diets, balancing their lifestyle and hope
that whether they are 80 or 8 they do the right thing.
