Day 102 - 13 Mar 95 - Page 33

design person, yes, who is responsible for managing that
       overall issue, yes?
       A. We have a buildings manager who is responsible for the
design of new buildings and the building of new premises,
if that is what you mean.

  Q. Are there any other particular jobs like that, we have a
nutritionist, we have a building design specialist, have
       you any other -----
       A. Well, it is a very big company. I mean, we have
managers responsible for all sorts of aspects.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not go through them all, Mr. Morris. Put
your question so as far as it relates to animal welfare.

MR. MORRIS: Mr. Pattison has already said there is no-one with
specific responsibility for the management of animal
welfare as a job, that is their job. I am trying to see
does the company have people equivalent in, say, like what
you have just said. (To the witness): I mean, are there
other job descriptions of other things, just that you can
think of off the top of your head?
       A. Well, yes, but I do not -- I mean, there are hundreds
of jobs with lots of job descriptions. I do not understand
what -- the welfare, the specific welfare, is a function
that comes into a lot of people's job descriptions.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will break off there. Yes, 2 o'clock.

                       (Luncheon adjournment)

MR. MORRIS: Just to clarify that last point, I did not ask it
very clearly: So, when you said there are hundreds of
people with varying job descriptions, are they people based
in some kind of office complex at Sun Valley who basically
       work inside?
       A. Some people will work inside, some people will be based
at the agricultural office, some will be based in Hereford,
some have a combination of office and outside jobs -- all
       sorts.

  Q. But they are not people that are involved in the day-to-day
running of any particular sheds; they are not managers in
       that respect?
       A. No, the managers of the sheds are actually out on site.

  Q. So, of all those, what you call, hundreds of people, there
is not one person whose job is animal welfare?
       A. Not singularly on its own, no.

  Q. If there was somebody with a job whose sole responsibility
was the welfare of animals .....

MS. STEEL: Just going back to what I was asking about earlier,
about the change over from Sun Valley catchers to contract
catchers: Quite a number of the catchers were sacked at
that time, were they not, the Sun Valley catchers?
       A. Yes, I think they were.

  Q. So that you could bring in the contract catching teams?
