1 about it?
A. They would not work for me.
2
Q. Does your company object to the attribution to it of the
3 approval of methods as barbaric as that?
A. Barbaric methods have no place involved with
4 McDonald's.
5 Q. Now I wish to turn, please, you have done employment save
for this: In relation to the employment of people from
6 ethnic minorities and women, does your company promulgate
written policies?
7 A. We have an equal opportunity policy, yes. It is
published.
8
Q. Is it also contained in internal papers which are used for
9 training staff?
A. Yes.
10
Q. My Lord, this is pink volume 11 -- it is a horrible fat
11 volume, I am afraid. It is once again an awkward
exercise. Can you turn to the back at tab 10? This is a
12 document dated 10th May 1993. I will not read it out;
I just want you to identify it for us. It has the
13 McDonald's logo with the union jack underneath. That
means it is your company document?
14 A. From the British company, yes.
15 Q. It has the appearance of an internal memorandum, is that
right?
16 A. That is right.
17 Q. To restaurants managers?
A. Yes.
18
Q. And to people above them?
19 A. Yes.
20 Q. It is from Carmel Platley. Who is she?
A. She is the officer who heads human resources.
21
Q. Its subject is "sexual and racial harassment policy".
22 Just cast your eye over it?
A. Yes.
23
Q. She says, "A copy of the new policy is attached along with
24 a new section to be kept in your Human Resources Manual"?
A. Yes.
25
Q. "Copy of the new Employee Crew Handbook Equal Opportunity
26 Employment sections". Those last two -- let me take them
in turn. The new sexual and racial harassment policy is
27 for whose consumption? Who is that intended to be read
by?
28 A. It is intended to be read by everybody.
29 Q. What about the sections for the human resources manual and
the new copy for the employee crew handbook sections?
30 A. They are meant to be read by everybody and understood
at the same time.
