Day 022 - 12 Sep 94 - Page 18

Q. If we look at page 321 -- it is probably fortunate we have
not the whole report but, if it is needed, I think
Professor Crawford could supply it -- the bottom point
talks about "Export of food policy, heart disease and
cancer". Their conclusion is: "In view of the very
serious nature of nutrition related disease in certain
technically advanced countries, it would be undesirable
for those countries to transfer their principles of food
technology and agriculture to other countries in which
cardiovascular disease, breast or colon cancer are not at
this time a problem."

Do you consider the exporting of western diet a potential
problem to countries that have low incidence of cancer?
A. I would say that we do not have the evidence to make a
comment on that sort of statement.

Q. So why would the NATO Advanced Research Workshop make that
comment? They surely would have considered all the
evidence? They are not known, presumably, to be wild-eyed
nutritionists and environmentalists?
A. I would like to know who in fact is a member of this
working party, for example. It is a workshop, for
example.

Q. We have to ask Michael Crawford, Professor Crawford, on
that one.
A. It is like everything you read in the newspapers; you
should not believe that.

Q. No. That is why we are concentrating on official
internationally respected ----
A. What they are trying to do is they are trying to give
advice of a general nature. They may be suggesting in
this -- and I am interpreting it -- that, you know,
factors which we believe may be disadvantageous should not
be wholesalely transferred to other people. It is the
same as cigarette smoking. The tobacco companies are
making a lot of money out of cigarette smoking in
undeveloped countries.

Q. If we move on. If we go to Verner Wheelock's file, the
back of the file. I do not know if it is there in your
file. It is Healthy Eating: The Food Issue of the
1990s. It was served during the last period of the trial.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What does it look like, Mr. Morris?

MR. MORRIS: It was one that we served when we were
cross-examining Professor Wheelock. We will just find it
for you, Dr. Arnott.
A. It does not appear to be in my bundle.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not think it is in that volume.

MR. MORRIS: What I will do is read out bits.

MS. STEEL: It might be in ----.
