Day 059 - 01 Dec 94 - Page 70

kind of recycling with that material, was it not?
       A. At that time, but they were certainly encouraged to
       recycle.

  Q. In other countries you do have successful recycling, do you
       not, in Europe?
       A. Where are you referring to?

  Q. Well, you tell me the countries in Europe?
       A. No. You have said that ----

  Q. No, I am asking you a question. Which countries in Europe
are there actual recycling schemes in store for customers?
       A. Germany, but for an entirely different reason.

  Q. Well, it is being done?
       A. Yes, it is being done.

  Q. Where else is it being done?
       A. I am not aware of any other major programme. There
might be some minor programmes going on.

  Q. You are not aware of any other ones?
       A. Not major.

  Q. What about in one of the countries which you have
responsibility for? Shall I read them out and see if it is
       happening in any of those?
       A. Major recycling?

  Q. In-store recycling by customers.
       A. No, I said I am not aware of any other major recycling.

  Q. Which ones have got minor recycling in store?
       A. Oh, plenty countries would have pilot schemes.

  Q. What about Switzerland?
       A. Yes, they have a pilot scheme.

  Q. It is just a pilot scheme?
       A. As far as I am aware. I was there a couple of weeks
ago and it was certainly no more than that.

  Q. Germany has it throughout the stores, do they?
       A. Yes.

  Q. And it functions, does it? The customers by and large
       separate their waste?
       A. It functions with help.

  Q. Do you have to do it by law in Germany?
       A. You do not have to, but there is a great penalty to not
doing it, inasmuch as they operate, I am not entirely sure
of all the details, what is called the "Green Dark"
programme whereby customers become charged for packaging,
so it becomes a deposit on packaging, if you like.

  Q. The customers, you mean the actual consumers, McDonald's
       customers get charged?
       A. No, sorry, suppliers' customers.
