Day 152 - 11 Jul 95 - Page 59
A. 50, 50 to 60.

Q. Those have been in areas outside the area where you were
Supervisor, were they?
A. Yes.

Q. Tell us exactly, please, how a rap session is conducted.
Start with the average number of people that will attend a
rap session?
A. The ideal number of people to attend a rap session
would be eight to 10. The average would be nine. It is
not impossible to conduct a rap session with a lesser
number than that. However, you want the people there to be
representative of the restaurant and the crew members as a
whole.

Q. Could you cope if there were 15 or 20 people?
A. I would not care, but it would make it more difficult
to conduct the rap session. Obviously, if you have 20
people in a room, all of whom need to make a contribution,
then it is more difficult to conduct it. However, if 15 or
20 people turned up for the rap session, then I would
continue with the rap session and just make sure that
everybody had their opportunity to voice any concerns or
ideas they wished to put to me during the course of the rap
session.

Q. When you were a Manager how was it organised which crew
members went to the rap session?
A. Generally, we would put a notice up on the previous
week saying there is a rap session, say, five o'clock on
Tuesday. We generally like to keep it at a time where most
people could actually attend the rap session. Therefore,
you know, if they work generally days, then they could go
at the 5 o'clock. They would be available at 5 o'clock.
Anyone who was actually scheduled for that time wanted to
go, then they could go on request. If they wanted to say
something specifically, then we would let them off the
shift to go.

Q. Where would it be held?
A. Usually in the crew room of the restaurant.

Q. Tell us about the actual proceedings at the rap session.
There is an Area Supervisor or somebody like that?
A. That is right.

Q. From outside the area usually unless he does not turn up
and the local chap has to do it, as Mr. Stanton was telling
us this morning?
A. Yes.

Q. Who leads the discussion, how does it work?
A. The Supervisor conducting the rap session leads the
discussion. First of all, as a Supervisor, you would
introduce yourself, try and put people at ease, ask if they
want anything to drink. Then you would take some sort of
tot up as to how many males/females were in the rap session
and whether they were full or part-time, and that is the
extent you would go. You would not take down anybody's
