Day 188 - 15 Nov 95 - Page 11
no. During the filming period -----

Q. So the shift patterns, was that when you were working?
A. When I worked the shifts and when I was doing the
observations, there were no limitations on who we could
talk to, where we went, what we watched. I mean, we had
very free access to the store and very good co-operation
from everybody in the two stores.

Q. When you were working?
A. From the whole period of watching what was happening in
the stores.

Q. And observation?
A. When I was doing the observation period and the shift
pattern, there was complete co-operation from the stores.

Q. I will come to your statement in a minute. You said that
you were treated like a full employee of McDonald's while
you were working there?
A. When I did the shift pattern, it was -- when I did the
shifts, I was treated on the shift on the grill floor as
though I was a member of the grill team. It was not --
there were not any special excuses made for me. There was
not a kind of: "It is all right to be slower because you
are not used to it", or something. I mean, one had to get
in there and get stuck in and do it.

Q. What about the filming; did you have the same level of
co-operation with the filming?
A. We had a lot of co-operation from the crew and what
have you. What happened, however, is that we were
followed -- I mean, we were accompanied throughout the
filming period by the public relations officer, Corinne;
I cannot remember her surname. She stayed with us
throughout the whole period of filming, and she would
intervene from time to time to stop us filming if she did
not like the questions that were being asked or answered by
the crew, or if she thought we were filming something that
should not be seen. She would also -----

Q. Can you just give us some examples?
A. I think there was -- we were talking to some members of
the crew in the crew room, and one of the members of the
crew called Tony had actually been quite positive about
enjoying working for McDonald's, and I think he was
thinking about going on to try and become a Manager in the
store; but he then started to say something on the lines
that he did think that they were pressed too hard or asked
too much of; and that at that point -----

Q. He did not think they were pressed or he thought they were
pressed too hard?
A. Thought the staff were pressed too hard by the
management. So he had been very positive up until that
moment; and Corinne then intervened and said, "Stop the
filming." We tried to persuade her to carry on, and we
wanted to ask the question of the crew members there: "What
do you think is wrong with McDonald's?" She said we could
not ask that question. She suggested an alternative
