Day 134 - 13 Jun 95 - Page 11

-- is to look at one of those green printouts. We do not
have access to terminals which give that information. I am
sure we could go to a particular terminal in a particular
department to look at a certain time, but the way it is
done is via hard copy, that he would take it from that.

I also know that is the case for management turnover
information which, clearly, is held somewhere on a
computer, but he actually takes it from the paper report.

MR. MORRIS: Which one are you looking at when you are pointing?
       A. I am looking at page 700 which I was told to.

MS. STEEL: So the crew turnover figure is something that
someone has actually plugged in from looking at the green
       computer printouts?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Just one thing I wanted explained was the year to date
management hires and management hires, internal, external.
       What do they mean?
       A. They mean the number of salaried management employees
who have been recruited during that time, and that is a
cumulative figure, as I understand it, so that includes the
       whole year, the 739.

  Q. "Internal" is people who have come in from other positions
       in the Company?
       A. From hourly paid, yes.

MR. MORRIS: Just on that page, if you look at the management
hires for the year, 739, is that what that represents?
That is the total for the year?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Below it has 244, 495 for internal, external, yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Which adds up to 739?
       A. Yes, I think so, yes.

  Q. So the internal management hires from crew, presumably,
would be 244 and the external would be 495?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Which does not tally with the figures that you have given
for more recent years about percentage coming from crew.
What conclusion do you draw from that?
       A. Well, the figures I think that we discussed yesterday
were of those employed. These people hired during a
particular period of time. So, the effect of that is that,
well, just what I said, that what we talked about
yesterday, 50 per cent was the total numbers of management
employed and the proportion of that; whereas this is the
proportion of internal v. external at a particular point in
       time.

  Q. That has to be the total employed as management ---

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: No.
