Q. Right. So he was doing it on behalf of the company, was
2 he not?
A. He is signing here as the president of McDonald's
3 Hamburgers Limited; he was doing it on behalf of them.
4 Q. So that sums up McDonald's position at the time. That
includes the links between diet and cancer. What is
5 McDonald's current view on the links between diet and
cancer?
6 A. I do not know.
7 Q. You do not know?
A. No. I am not sure what the decision would be. I am
8 sure that a balanced diet, a balanced lifestyle, what you
eat, what you drink, the amount of exercise you take, the
9 amount of sleep you get, are all part of what you become.
10 Whether I could categorically say if you, an individual,
do this, you are immune from everything for now and ever
11 more, or if you do this, you are absolutely going to catch
a disease, would be totally irresponsible.
12
Q. Would you publish that statement now?
13 A. Would I publish -- which one do you refer to?
14 Q. The sections about the links between diet and health.
A. I think I probably would take advice again on the
15 situation as it relates to, you know, the 1994 time
frame. I would certainly try to provide information to my
16 customers that would allow them to make an intelligent
choice about what they ate or did not eat, and reinforce
17 the issue of a balanced lifestyle. I cannot begin to
legislate, I suppose, for every man, woman and child on
18 the face of the earth; some are active, some are
sedentary.
19
Q. I am not asking you to -- I am asking whether
20 McDonald's -----
A. Did you not ask me if I would publish this again?
21
Q. Yes, not all the -- I am asking specifically about the
22 advice on the links between diet and cancer.
23 MR. JUSTICE BELL: We had better identify what he is being
asked about. I have handed up my copy, you see, to the
24 witness.
25 MISS STEEL: Have you not a copy in the trial bundle itself?
You should have.
26
MR. JUSTICE BELL: I probably would have if someone gave me the
27 reference.
28 MR. RAMPTON: It was very difficult to read, if your Lordship
remembers.
29
MISS STEEL: Yes. I asked Miss Brinley-Codd if she could
30 prepare additional copies.
