Day 184 - 06 Nov 95 - Page 45

you know of any union anywhere in the world that would be
opposed to people being promoted on the basis of their
       ability?
       A. I -----

  Q. Do you know of anywhere -- have you ever read about
anything like that happening anywhere in the world?
       A. No. But then I have never read anything about unions.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know whether and what Cam Ballantyne
said was true or not, or are you just saying it is what he
       said?
       A. It is just what he said. I do not know if there is any
truth in it. I do not know almost anything at all about
       unions.  He, himself, said that he was not sure about that;
he just said from what he understood.

MR. MORRIS: Well, it is absolute rubbish, is it not?
       A. I do not know.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. You know, the last three or four
questions you have asked are pointless to this witness.
She has never said it was true; just that it may be true,
it may not. She is just saying what Cam Ballantyne told
her; and she has now added that he did not know, he was not
       sure.

MR. MORRIS: Why did you believe what he said, then?
       A. From what -- like, I always thought because -- you
know, he is older, and I thought maybe he would know more
       than we would.

  Q. Did not you question him on it, then?
       A. A lot of people asked him a lot of questions at that
meeting, and he made it very clear that he did not know
very much about unions -- he, himself -- and that if we
wanted to know anything, we would have to ask Sarah.

  Q. In your statement to the Labour Board -- I do not know if
you have it up there, actually.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is in a little bundle like that. You have
       it now, yes.

MR. MORRIS: Do you have that one?
       A. Yes, I do.

  Q. In the second paragraph, in the middle of that paragraph,
you have a word deleted. I presume it is Sarah. Are you
talking about Sarah? After "that we would get a wage
increase and we would receive many benefits", a word
deleted, "did not inform us" -- is that Sarah? Do you
remember? It does not matter that much.
       A. I believe it is Sarah.

  Q. ".....did not inform us that we could lose the benefits we
have and what would happen if a union did come in"?
       A. Right.

  Q. So which benefits would you have lost if the union had come
