Day 168 - 03 Oct 95 - Page 36

MR. MORRIS: If we move on from that to performance reviews -- I
am checking if Michael Logan says anything on that.
Right. You said about handwriting each performance review
       for which you were responsible?
       A. That is right.

  Q. That was the general practice, though, was it not,
everybody hand wrote the performance reviews?
       A. No. What I meant by handwriting was when I was
responsible for the training squad reviews, I not only gave
them the printed form they got anyway, but I gave them an
A4 side of paper with a specific set of goals on as well.
The idea was to make them feel part, more part of the
       management team.

  Q. So you added an extra page of goals?
       A. Well, instead of just having the three or four lines on
the bottom of their performance review, it was felt that
you needed to specify their goals a bit clear to enable
them to be a bit clearly defined. So we took the view that
whoever was doing the training squad performance reviews
did that, so I was doing it at the time and I did it.

  Q. I did not quite catch all the answer to that, sorry. There
was a time, is it not the case, when Michael Logan was
going through performance reviews with individual crew
members, even though he had not done the performance
       reviews?
       A. There were times when we wrote performance reviews,
discussed them at Managers' meetings, and individuals were
given the performance reviews to give to the relevant crew
       members on their shift.

  Q. Right. Michael Logan would have been one of those people?
       A. There are occasions when he probably would have done
       that, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What do you mean, actually just handed them
       the form with ------
       A. For instance, we came to a Managers' meeting, we wrote
the performance reviews in the meeting for, say, six
employees for the following week, and I wrote a particular
-- I was the one who actually physically wrote a
particular employee's performance reviews after discussion
with the rest of the managers, and I was away for the
following week, it would make sense if the PR was due to
get another Manager to actually go through it with them
rather than waiting until I, say, came back off of holiday
       or from a course.

MR. MORRIS: Complaints about performance reviews being late,
did they come up at rap sessions from what you can recall
       from reading the notes?
       A. I assume they did. I cannot remember any specific rap
sessions where people complained about them, but I can
assume that they did come up.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: How long would the notes of a typical rap
       session be?
