Day 104 - 15 Mar 95 - Page 62

  Q. Would that include shots of inside a broiler house, the
       slaughter process, catching?
       A. No.

  Q. No?
       A. I do not think so, I cannot remember.

MR. MORRIS: One more question on that document: You said that
the veal crates transport of 300,000 calves a year to
European countries for rearing calves using veal crates is
deemed to be cruel in the UK. Would you accept that?

MR. RAMPTON: Would he accept what? That he said it or that it
       is deemed to be?

MR. MORRIS: Would you accept that it is deemed to be cruel in
       the UK?
       A. If I said it, then I said it, did not I?

  Q. Yes, but I have to ask you.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think it does speak for itself.
I appreciate you are giving him a chance to agree with it
       but ----

MR. MORRIS: Would you say that it is not only deemed to be
cruel but it is cruel to rear calves in veal crates? Do
you believe that it is cruel?
       A. I made that comment following the Farm Animal Welfare
       Council Report.

  Q. Yes. Do you agree with them that it is cruel?
       A. Yes, but what relevance is that?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It may go back to dairy cattle but do not
start arguing about what is relevant as well or we will
might just as well go out and ask the first parking metre.
Just allow me to say what is relevant and what is not.
       A. At that time, which was two years ago, all I was
highlighting was the situation which has now been brought
to massive public attention which I think speaks for
       itself.

MS. STEEL: The employees that are hanging birds on the line for
slaughter, they get about between 2 and 3 seconds for each
       bird, do they not?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So there is no time for doing the job, you know, picking
the birds up very carefully, and hanging them gently, and
       what have you?
       A. The correct method for the job has already been
described and disclosed. It is our management duty to make
sure those people do the job correctly.

  Q. I am not sure whether we have had this or not but I have
not got it crossed off my list.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Ask if you are not sure.
