Day 155 - 14 Jul 95 - Page 41

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have no trouble with calling a room the
"crew room" because it is primarily for the use of the
crew, although anyone else can go into it without asking.
It does not knock me back.

MR. MORRIS: I think that is a bit of a development.
(To the witness): So that would be standard practice then
for McDonald's, that the crew room is, in fact, for
       anybody, not just crew?
       A. Yes, I mean there are Floor Managers that take their
       breaks in there.

  Q. But salaried Managers can take breaks in there if they want
       to?
       A. Yes, some restaurants do not have the facility of a
       Manager's office.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: How big was the crew room at Seven Sisters?
Use something in the court, for instance, to give -- was it
       more or less square?
       A. Yes, it was square.

  Q. For instance, those book shelves behind you, would it be
more than that in width or less, the one with six sections
in it over by your right shoulder?
       A. It would probably be from, say, where you are, sir, to
here, maybe going up to this, where the green bag is. It
       was quite large.

MR. MORRIS: Had any leaflets about unions been given out
outside the store around this time or previous or
       afterwards?
       A. No.

  Q. They had not?
       A. Not that I am aware of.

  Q. You would know if they did, would you?
       A. Well, yes, because Seven Sisters has got -- it is the
only restaurant where the kitchen can see out into the
street. It is all glass. It has not got a front, so every
member of staff would be able to see the front of the
       restaurant.

  Q. It is the only store in the country like that, is it?
       A. Well, in those days it was -- I do not know now.

  Q. So when the stores are designed now, they are designed so
that the kitchen area is not in view of the public; is that
       correct?
       A. I do not know. That is not my field.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is just a question of siting, is it not?

MR. MORRIS: It was the second store opened in this country, was
       it not?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. You said the leaflets were not removed from any crew
