Day 095 - 02 Mar 95 - Page 34

       absolutely not.

  Q. When did the Environmental Protection Agency bring in those
       regulations?
       A. I do not know. As far as I am aware there has always
       been a requirement.

  Q. I think you can probably fast forward reviewing for a
while. Pause there. That was actually a quote from a
       scientist.
       A. Yes, excuse me?

  Q. Because everyone was laughing, that was actually a quote
from the scientist working at the research laboratory.
Carry on, please. Are you aware of where the breeding
stock for the cattle that McDonald's ultimately purchases,
what kind of conditions they are kept in?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you keep your voice up?

  MS. STEEL: Sorry.
       A. That is a very broad question. There are a lot of
companies, that is their business. The cattle that comes
in, I do not know where they are coming from. In terms of
their genetic parents I do not know.

  Q. Would that surprise you, what was shown there?
       A. Yes.

  Q. It would surprise you?
       A. It is not typical. From what I have seen it is not
under those conditions by any means. What you want to do,
especially when it comes to breeding, is make the animal
comfortable as you possibly can. Those conditions are not
       typical.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You are really being asked whether you have
seen these things. I would have thought you could say yes
or no. If the answer is "no" you can wait to see if you
are asked another question and if the answer is, yes, but
that needs further explanation then give it.

THE WITNESS: Yes, I am sorry.

  MS. STEEL: Play on.

                  (The video recording continued).

MS. STEEL: Could you pause, please? Are they fairly typical
       crates for transporting chickens?
       A. No. They are typical things in terms of size, yes.
That looks like a 1920s operation.

  Q. A 1920s operation?
       A. Yes. Nowadays, for instance, it is illegal to have
       wood on any plant.

  Q. How long has that been the case?
       A. As far as I know.
