Day 111 - 30 Mar 95 - Page 63

by the bullet points, the first two bullet points under 6?
       A. Yes.

  Q. "Alec Jarrett Limited has no laboratory at the premises,
neither does he use the services of any outside laboratory.
There is no sampling programme for the detection of E.coli
       0157: H" and I think there is a misprint there for "H7"?
       A. That is right.

  Q. " ... at Alec Jarrett Limited." I would like you to
explain once again, please, clearly and slowly -- first,
perhaps, answer this question: Those two sentences are
just plain wrong, are they not?
       A. Yes, they are.

  Q. They are rubbish. Tell us, please, how that incorrect
information came to be included in this statement? I was
not quite sure I understood what you told us.
       A. As I said before, I know now that I should have written
       "to my knowledge".

  Q. What you should have written, I think, is that somebody
       told you; is that right?
       A. Yes, that is right.

  Q. Tell me exactly with whom you had these conversations or
this conversation and precisely what that person or persons
said to you in this context?
       A. Well, you do appreciate that this all happened about a
       year ago?

  Q. Yes.
       A. The first discussions I had about the laboratory
services -- I never asked any questions particularly about
       the E.coli 0157.

  Q. You did not ask any questions about it?
       A. No, and I said that earlier today as well. I did not
ask any particulars questions. I had no reason to assume
that they would be pathogenic microbial testing.

  Q. That sentence is just an assumption on your part, is it?
       A. Yes, that is right.

  Q. That assumption on generality, that assumption is based on
       what?

MR. MORRIS: The witness was trying to answer Mr. Rampton; you
       interrupted her.

THE WITNESS: Based on the fact that I asked both the Senior
Meat Hygiene or Meat Inspector, David White, from the
Kingswood Borough Council, who was in charge of supervising
the plant on behalf of the Environmental Health Departments
at Kingswood Council, and visited the plant regularly at
least once a week, I asked him: "What laboratory work is
being done at the abattoir" and he said: "None, to his
knowledge" obviously. I then took this up with Mr. Bob
Jarrett, I think, I am quite sure, saying that I wanted to
start doing TVC swabs and asked them if they were doing
