Day 020 - 28 Jul 94 - Page 61
1 A. Correct.
2 Q. So keeping them indoors limits their normal patterns of
behaviour?
3 A. They could root in other substrates than straw which
was the only one which was provided other than in the
4 dunging corridor where they could push against the
concrete and root amongst faeces.
5
Q. Which probably would not be very enjoyable?
6 A. No. Pigs spend a reasonable amount of time rooting
around in faeces. It seems to be a normal behaviour
7 pattern.
8 Q. Yes, but against concrete?
A. They might do it against stone, both hard objects.
9
Q. Going on to the slaughter of the pigs?
10 A. Yes.
11 Q. For how long did you observe this slaughtering going on?
A. In total, so that is examining the lairage area, the
12 stunning and the bleeding, it was not more than two hours.
13 Q. In terms of how much time you actually spent watching the
animals being slaughtered, do you know how long that was?
14 A. By slaughtering you mean sticking or do you mean
stunning and sticking?
15
Q. Stunning and sticking?
16 A. It would not have been more than an hour or an hour
and a quarter. It would have not been more than an hour
17 and a quarter.
18 Q. In your statement you say that when the top deck of the
pig transporter was unloaded the pigs slid down the ramp?
19 A. Correct.
20 Q. Can you describe what you mean by that?
A. They were on their haunches as they came down. They
21 did not fall over, so they either slid on all four feet or
sometimes they put their bottoms down and slid down with
22 their front legs extended.
23 Q. How does the whole process work then?
A. You have a tail-gate to the lorry which is let down.
24 That accesses the main ramp for the lower deck of pigs.
Then there is another ramp which unfolds within the lorry
25 which acts as the ramp for the top deck and that feeds on
to the lower ramp.
26
Q. So that would be at a steeper angle?
27 A. The internal ramp is at a steeper angle -- you are
right.
28
Q. Do you know what angle that was?
29 A. No, but it was more than 20 degrees; it would have to
be.
30
Q. It would have to be?
