Day 161 - 24 Jul 95 - Page 45

MISS STEEL: Yes. I am talking about what happened after that,
when she brought in the new system.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Ask her if it worked after that.

MISS STEEL: It is not really what I am getting at. I am
getting at training. I do not particularly want to give my
       game away.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am sorry, time and time again you and
Mr. Morris have said you do not want to give the game
away. I have had murder trials where people have been at
risk of going to prison for life where counsel have been
less guarded about their approach in cross-examination.
One has to have a bit of robustness to it and not skirt all
the way round questions before you come to the point.
I really think you could put the point you have in mind to
Miss Anteneh straightaway, and you should do so.

MS. STEEL: I am not skirting around the question. I am trying
to get background information before I put a point which
then turns out to be completely incorrect

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You just put it anyway.

MISS STEEL: I will just leave it for our witnesses to deal
with. (To the witness) There were also complaints from the
crew that they were not getting pay rises; did you
       investigate that?
       A. Yes, I did.

  Q. Did you implement any kind of action to deal with those
       complaints?
       A. It is the same way it works as the training and the
OCLs and I was in charge of it, allocating people every two
weeks who is due and distribute that to individual Managers
to do it and collect it back myself, and distribute another
group of them back to their Managers. So that way
I managed to get all the due performance reviews done in
       time.

  Q. How long had you been at the Strand store when the filming
       started taking place?
       A. Three years.

  Q. About three years?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Right, but not all that time as the Manager?
       A. No.

  Q. How long had you been the Manager before the filming
       started?
       A. Two months.

  Q. Two months. What had happened to the previous manager, had
he just left or been transferred?
       A. He became a Supervisor.

MR. MORRIS: Again, the rap session, the staff filmed, the crew
