Day 120 - 03 May 95 - Page 64

MR. RAMPTON: No, my Lord. I have said what I had to say at the
outset of this cross-examination. I am glad to see I do
       not have to resile.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Would you like to break off now, then?

MR. MORRIS: Yes, but I object to Mr. Rampton's point.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We have been together too long for you to
take up that point. We will resume at 10.30 in the
morning. I think it is very important that we finish
Mr. Beavers in the four days which we have next week, and I
would appreciate it if you organised things as best you can
to do that. But I will say no more about that.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, could I say a few small words about
scheduling as we have a little bit of extra time
today? I hope it is going to be helpful.

Regarding Mr. Fairgreaves, it would help us -- and it is
not often I ask for help -- if we could defer him until the
middle of that week, that is the Wednesday. I do not think
it has anything to do with his convenience. It is because
there are people that Mrs. Brinley-Codd and perhaps I need
to see on the Monday and the Tuesday. As the defendants
have said, they will not take more than two days with him
and granted that he is not going to be examined in chief at
all, it is merely the continuation of his
       cross-examination.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Mr. Morris, I think, said he did not think it
would take particularly long. His estimate was two days.

MR. RAMPTON: That gives three, if he starts on Wednesday. It
       should be safe enough.

My Lord, the other thing was that Mr. Stein is in
difficulty starting the first three days of the week
beginning the 19th and would like to start on the Thursday
22nd. I would finish him anyway by the end of that week.
That would give him five days to be cross-examined. If
that is not enough -- and I accept it may not be -- he is
booked to come back, if needed, in the week beginning 24th
       July.

MR. MORRIS: I cannot find my schedule.

MR. RAMPTON: I would like to start ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You would like to start him on Tuesday 20th?

MR. RAMPTON: No, Thursday 22nd and finish him by Friday 23rd.
In other words, I think I said I would take two days with
him and I do not think I will be any longer than that.
Mr. Nicholson wonders if he could leave the witness box?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, please do, Mr. Nicholson. We will start
again at 10.30 in the morning. (The witness withdrew).
