Day 030 - 03 Oct 94 - Page 38

take it -- was that your selection or Mr. Cannon's
       selection?

MR. MORRIS: That is the ones he gave us.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I have to say I do not have it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It has at the bottom -- can I just read them
       out?

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes, thank you.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: They are little four to five, which are the
       acknowledgments. 83 to 87, 132 to 3, 134 to 5, 158 to
       161, 170 to 171, 174 to 7, 188 to 191, and 195, which
       I think was the table.

MR. RAMPTON: I am obliged. Thank you.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I hope to be back at two or very shortly
after, but I will come back as soon as I have finished
reading those. I will not read Professor Crawford until
       this evening.

                      (Short Adjournment)
                                                         2.00
       p.m..

MR. MORRIS: Mr. Cannon, if people are seeking to improve the
health of the population, what kind of foods should they
       be promoting?
       A. You mean policy makers, medical professionals?

  Q. Anyone who is seeking to improve the health of the
       population?
       A. What sort of foods or what sort of nutritional
       content?

  Q. What kinds of foods should they be promoting?
       A. The foods they should be promoting (and this is now
according to the government issued food selection guide,
which is approved by government as a whole, which came out
a couple of months ago) which is consistent with advice
from government for the last 10 years, a lot more
vegetables, a lot more fruit, more starchy foods, breads,
foods of cereal origin, preferably whole grain. That is
what they recommend. Again referring to the so-called
healthy, the so-called food selection guide, there is a
section in it called fatty sugary foods which is
recommended to consume only occasionally, i.e. it is a
good idea to consume a lot less of those and, more
generally, foods with a substantial amount of fat or
saturated fat in them which tends to be foods of animal
origin, meat, milk, if it is from fat, dairy produce, meat
       products, that sort of thing.

  Q. If people are seeking to improve the population's health,
would it be sensible or responsible to encourage people to
eat foods which are nutritionally worse than the dietary
       guidelines?
