Day 184 - 06 Nov 95 - Page 12

Swing Manager was the equivalent of Floor Manager in the
UK. We learned last week that is the phrase they use in
       Norway, as well.

MR. MORRIS: Right. (To the witness) You said that -- you get
extra money, of course, from the ordinary crew person, yes,
when you are a Swing Manager?
       A. We get a promotion, so we do get a little bit of a wage
       increase, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you keep your voice up? It may be
perfectly natural to speak quickly, but try and take it a
little slower, and speak loud and clear.
       A. OK.

MR. MORRIS: I am just trying to see what you are doing now.
You said something about getting the store prepared. Does
that mean sometimes you actually open up?
       A. Yes. Usually, I do open; that is my usual shift.

  Q. But, I mean, you actually have a key and you can open the
       store up yourself?
       A. Unlock the door, is that what you are saying?
I open -- I go in from my open shift, so I go in the store,
unlock the door, turn off the alarm, and then get going
with the stuff I have to do.

  Q. I am trying to get that clear. So, sometimes you are the
person, if you like, in charge?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Do you have performance reviews?
       A. Yes, we do.

  Q. Right. Are they linked to increases, possible increases,
       in wages?
       A. For crew or for managers?

  Q. For crew, sorry, for crew.
       A. For crew, you get a performance review every six
months, and it rates you on how you are doing, based on
SOCs, dependability, attitude; you get rated 1, 2, 3, and
you get a wage increase due in relation to those ratings.

  Q. Right. You get a wage increase if you pass, what, every
six months, or do you have to have two lots once -- do you
get that wage increase once a year or once every six
       months?
       A. You get a wage increase for a 1, a 2 and a 3, and I am
not sure about a 4. So every six months you do get a wage
       increase, unless -----

  Q. If you pass?
       A. Well -----

  Q. Does the basic rate that people are on go up each year at
the same time because of inflation, or does it go up at
different times? When does it go up?
       A. If there has been -- if the minimum wage has been
raised, then everybody gets a compression of that; like, if
