Day 155 - 14 Jul 95 - Page 43

particular incident which you are claiming is actually
quite common -- you remember it clearly?
       A. Not clearly, no. I said to you before that vaguely
I remembered when it was brought to my attention about six
       years later.

  Q. You vaguely remember that you spoke to two Managers and
then you vaguely remember in the witness box that the Area
Supervisor was coming down the same morning or was it
morning or afternoon, do you remember?
       A. I cannot remember now.

  Q. But an Area Supervisor was coming down, yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Mr. Peter Tassell, was he Area Supervisor for the -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: How is that spelt?
       A. T-A-S-S-E-L-L.

MR. MORRIS: Was he Area Supervisor for the whole time you were
involved in the service of the store?
       A. Yes, he was, yes.

  Q. How many stores did he have responsibility for?
       A. Three.

  Q. When an Area Supervisor made planned visits to do audits,
was it usual for the place to be cleaned up?
       A. It was usual in any sense if you ever had any visitors
to clean -- you know, I am talking about detailed
       cleanliness, not general cleanliness.

  Q. But when someone is doing a store audit, you said you want
to put on a good show, obviously -- we have heard that
Mr. Mark Davis and other witnesses from McDonald's -- are
sometimes audits done without being announced in advance?
       A. Yes, they are.

  Q. Is there a reason for some audits to be announced and some
other audits to be not announced? I can think of some
       obvious examples.
       A. Based on my experience, if I worked with a Manager and
everything was fine when it was unannounced, it tells me a
       lot about that individual.

  Q. Whereas if it is announced you would expect there to be a
       special effort, basically?
       A. You would expect that but also it is a gauge to find
out how well the person knows what is clean and what is not
clean. You know, that is the whole point of an Area
Supervisor. That individual might think that this is
absolutely perfect, and the Area Supervisor might guide
him, you know, in the right manner.

  Q. Presumably, Area Supervisors or anybody else higher up
would realise that the figures achieved by an announced
visit compared to the figures achieved by an announced
visit, presumably, the general result would be a better
result from an announced visit, they would be aware of
