Day 251 - 17 May 96 - Page 27
Q. No further questions.

Cross-examined by MR. RAMPTON

Q. I will be very quick, Miss Branford, you will be pleased to
here. What do you understand by the Brazilian Portuguese
word "savannah"?
A. In the region -- as I said, I am not a forest expert --
in the region they do not actually use, they use the term
"Campo".

Q. But you have been in Brazil probably as long as you have
been in England, I should think?
A. Yes.

Q. Do they ever talk about savannah in Brazil?
A. Geographers, I think, use the term, but it is not in
normal usage.

Q. But to you it means more or less the same as "Campo" --
excuse my Portuguese pronunciation. Have you got the big
vegetable map there, what I call the vegetable map?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you speak any Spanish?
A. Yes.

Q. Do the Portuguese use "Campo" in the same way as the
Spanish did because they just use it to mean the country,
well, in some parts of Spain?
A. Yes, they certainly do.

Q. If you are in -- no autobigraphical glimpses here -- an
Andaluthian village and you ask where someone is, they will
say, "He is out in the Campo". He may be in a tilled field
or he may just be having a walk over the top of a hill, and
it is all just the Campo. Have I got it right? A. You
have certainly got it right in Spanish -- the accent is
slightly different because they make a distinction between
the "karko"(?) and the "floresta" or the "mato", which is
the common word for the "forest". So they will say the
mato or the Campo. The mato will be where all the trees
are and the Campo will be a relatively open area. But, as
I said, I am not really the right person to be asking about
vegetation. It is not an area I am at all a specialist in.

MR. RAMPTON: Then I will not ask you in detail about this map.
We can all read the legend. "Savana" is more or less the
same word in English as it is in Portuguese, so I do not
need your help with that. Can you see the-right hand
bottom corner of this big map, where there is a key; do you
see?
A. Yes.

Q. There is a legend which I think says: "Areas of ecological
tension, contact between types of vegetation"; is that
right? Right at the bottom.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am sorry to hold you up Mr. Rampton, let me
just get myself organised again. Just pause a moment
please. Where are you Mr. Rampton?
