Day 134 - 13 Jun 95 - Page 29
resigned, they have just sort of disappeared into the world
somewhere and they are not calling them in or they have not
shown up, or whatever? If they keep people on their books
for many extra weeks or months, they would have a lower
turnover, would they not, when they filled in that section?
A. They would but the managers do not fill it in and that
would still be something -- they could only do that from
what you are suggesting for a little while.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Even if they did do that, they would have to
pay for it sooner or later?
A. Yes, someone would find it, you know, if they did not
find it that week.

Q. If it does not come in on this review, they have to be
scored on a later one, presumably?
A. Yes, and in the interim, people like the Supervisor
would be looking at the number of people on the payroll and
the number of people working and would pick up if there was
a big discrepancy.

MR. MORRIS: They would not pay for it later, with respect,
because -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If they were kept on for a few weeks longer,
it might mean that they have not left in the period covered
by this, but they will then be entered down as leaving at
some later period ---
A. Yes.

Q. -- when, in fact, they had not left. So there will be one
less here but one more there. That is all I am
suggesting.
A. Yes, I think Mr. Morris misunderstood.

MR. MORRIS: Yes, but the overall average length of stay of
employees would be increased if that was a general practice
of managers to keep people on the books -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I thought you were working with turnover
rather than average length of stay.

MR. MORRIS: That would apply to turnover, you see.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Not necessarily. But, anyway, that is all
part of your mathematics for later.

MR. MORRIS (To the witness): Anyway, if we move on to document,
I think it is, D, this is the reasons for leaving, yes?
A. Yes.

Q. It can be looked at with document C over the page?
A. Yes.

Q. Just a couple of preliminaries: There used to be 12 codes,
did there not, for termination codes?
A. There used to be what?

Q. 12 codes rather than 34?
A. I do not know. I do not remember.
