Day 269 - 25 Jun 96 - Page 21
there are significantly higher proportions of some of these
essential nutrients in the homemade meal than there are in
the McDonald's and substantially less saturated fat, which
is the really important point.

Q. Yes, very well.

MR. MORRIS: You have not included free sugars and sodium?
A. No, I was not making a point about free sugars and
sodium.

Q. Right. Would they be positive or negative nutrients?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, I am sorry. You know there are specific
important points, and if Professor Crawford was going to
deal with them, they should have been dealt with in his
statement. It is not a criticism of him. We have got
quite a lot of evidence about them and, as I said to you
the other day, I do not want extra evidence at this stage
being brought in without proper notice.

MS. STEEL: In terms of whether or not there are kind of useful
quantities of these nutrients in, should we compare them
with the daily recommendations or something like that?
A. I really do not think so. I think the question at
stake here is really the level of saturated fat and
trans-isomers and the high fat content of these meals.

Q. Right. But that is the reason you have done --
A. Yes.

Q. That is the reason you did the chart?
A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: Can I ask, is it possible for Professor Crawford at
lunchtime or something like that to 'phone his department
and check the figure for vitamin A just so we know for sure
whether or not --

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which figure?

MS. STEEL: The figure that appears as 413 but which may be
41.3. Is it possible for that? Obviously I cannot ask him
to do it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is there a particular reason why you so
confidently said that you thought it was 41.3?

MS. STEEL: It is just because that is actually made with
peppers which I --
A. I am sorry?

Q. It is just because that meal was actually made with green
or red peppers, I do not know which.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you think it could be 413?
A. I would be happy to check, my Lord.
