Day 035 - 12 Oct 94 - Page 68
Q. "Can you avoid cancer? A guide to reducing your risks".
It is produced, it says funded, from the EEC as part of
the UK response to the Europe Against Cancer Initiative.
Please turn to page 18. Remember this document is all
about how to reduce your cancer risk.
A. Is this the page that says: "Is cancer hereditary
generally known"?

Q. No. You should have a page headed "Food".
A. I am sorry, that is page 8.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The number is in the bottom left on the
page.

THE WITNESS: I see.

MR. RAMPTON: Do you have it?
A. Yes, I do.

Q. "Obesity". Here, again, I am afraid, I would rather, if
you would not mind, you read the whole of the page and the
next page down to Vitamins and the two little additions on
the left-hand side above the page number?
A. Read the whole of page 18?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, including the left hand margin.

MR. MORRIS: Is he reading the "What you can do" section?

MR. RAMPTON: I would like him to read that too. Thank you,
Mr. Morris.

MR. MORRIS: That also goes over the page.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: He is going to read the whole of page 18 and
the whole of page 19.

MS. STEEL: And part of page 20 as well.

MR. RAMPTON: The left-hand column on page 20 is, perhaps, the
most important of all.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Read until you get to "viruses".
A. Thank you.

MR. RAMPTON: Two questions only. Do you agree that this
British document, part of a co-operative venture with the
rest of Europe, has the same guarded quality that the
American documents I showed you earlier had? In other
words, they say "may", "suspect" and "might" instead of
"do", "will" and "are known to"?
A. It is an extremely superficial review. It does not
make any pretence at going in great detail but, having
said that -- let me take a look again and see if I can be
more responsive to your question.

Q. Let me draw your attention to some particular passages.
There is some evidence at the top of page 18 that "being
grossly overweight (obese) increases the risk of some
forms of cancer". Then under "What you eat", last
