Day 088 - 13 Feb 95 - Page 47
the stunning area to try and improve that situation, and
this is some of the more recent work that we have done with
MLC in gauging the actual performance of the equipment.
Unfortunately, the people who we were working with at this
time have had, we and MLC were working with, have had
financial cramp.

Q. There is not a great deal I want to ask you about these
documents, Mr. Bowes, because it might be thought they
speak for themselves. "Impedance" in the 4th line, if you
just look at the first page, is what otherwise we may call
"resistance expressed in ohms"; is that right?
A. Yes.

Q. You will have noticed from Mr. Dr. Gregory's report that he
assumed the resistance in the head of pig as starting as
300 ohms?
A. That is correct.

Q. Whereas here we see a range round about 170 up to 178
I think is the highest?
A. Yes. We believe that is due to our watering of pigs,
or our spraying of pigs.

Q. So your belief is that by spraying pigs and improving the
conductivity, you reduce the resistance?
A. That is our belief, sir.

Q. Who actually made these measurements?
A. The Meat and Livestock Commission.

Q. Was that one person, or two, or what?
A. In the Meat Livestock Commission there would be a
minimum of two, also the people who were manufacturers of
that equipment, and obviously our technical team would be
involved as well.

Q. We notice that ----
A. -- May I say also undoubtedly a veterinarian would be
shown particular interest at that time as well.

Q. We notice if we look at the sheets, and I am not going
through them all, the current within one second expressed
in amps ranges from 1.34, that is the penultimate sheet,
down to 1.1 which is the third sheet I think.
A. That is correct.

Q. The first question is this: Why does the "current within 1
second matter"? Why give that figure, "current within one
second"?
A. Because when one applies the tongs, one must measure
immediately.

Q. Sorry?
A. When one applies the tongs, one must measure
immediately.

Q. Does that 1 second amperage continue to apply throughout
the time that the tongs are on the pig's head?
A. Yes.
