Day 310 - 04 Dec 96 - Page 24

from an allegation of persistent understaffing in order to
save labour costs, one finds that it is exposed as a
       falsehood.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think the only last specific matter on
employment is on page 72, I wanted to ask about just to
make sure that I have understood it because it seems quite
a large figure, but it may well be right and perfectly
explicable. 4.11.4: "The figures for women hourly paid
workers at McDonald's are..." and then 45 percent ---

MR. RAMPTON: That is the United States.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: -- in the United States in 1990. Then, "The
       US at large 58.2".

MR. RAMPTON: That is what the wretched document says, my Lord.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It may not be untoward if one reminds
oneself that it is hourly paid workers rather than... But
that was the actual figure. So, for every two men working
hourly paid there are three women in the States. That is
       what it means?

MR. RAMPTON: That is very likely right.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which would surprise one at first, but then,
if it is hourly paid, maybe that is so.

MR. RAMPTON: Maybe it is. I will just check in fact, if I
may, to see that I have the figures -- (Pause). It is not,
my Lord, I am sorry, it is not in that one.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Never mind.

MR. RAMPTON: I may have given a wrong reference, that is what
is worrying me. In this file it is in a rather different
order. I think it is 10.4, in fact, not 10.5. Yes, the
figure given for female service workers, which I have taken
to be roughly equivalent to hourly paid, is 58.2 percent.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So that is service workers?

MR. RAMPTON: That is called "service workers".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So, it is not actually defined as hourly?

MR. RAMPTON: No, it is not. Only in the British figures is it
       defined in that way.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. That may make it more understandable
       than just hourly paid.

MR. RAMPTON: Also, I have to say, there is a typographical
error. I am sorry about this. I do not know how that
happened. The "45 percent" for McDonald's should read "54
       percent".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Very well.
