quite painful, but only, as far as I was aware, the major
incidents would go in the Accident Book.

  Q. Did you have injuries yourself?
       A. Yes, many times, many burns. I went to hospital twice
with burns and had to have my bag (sic) in a plastic bag of
cream for several days at one time.

  Q. Sorry, your -----
       A. My bag (sic) was enclosed in a -----

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Your?
       A. Sorry. My hand was enclosed in a plastic bag of cream
for several days. Once, when I was rushing around to get
something from the stock room, I cut my finger and had
stitches in it, whilst I was working at the Ipswich store.

MR. MORRIS: Sorry, you said you had had stitches; have you
       still got a scar?
       A. Yes. It is across my middle finger.

  Q. Have you any comment about pay levels of crew members at
McDonald's at the time you worked there?
       A. Yes. They were very poor.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you remember what you were getting when
you were last at McDonald's at the end of 1987?
       A. Yes. I was between ú2.50 and ú2.90 an hour.

MR. MORRIS: Was that when you were still crew?
       A. As a Floor Manager. When I actually left and I started
the salaried managers' training programme, I was on ú6,000
salary which, for the hours I was doing, it came to less
       than ú2.00 on hour.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: When you gave me the ú2.50, between ú2.50 and
ú2.90, what do you mean, between ú2.50 and ú2.90?
       A. There were different bands for the time of day.

  Q. So that was because of evening or whatever?
       A. Evening premium.

  Q. Can you remember what you got in the pub when you went to
       work there?
       A. A similar amount.

  Q. You need not fear the consequences of this answer, but did
the pub pay cash in hand, gross or PAYE?
       A. PAYE.

  Q. It was all proper -----
       A. It was an Inde Coope pub.

MR. MORRIS: When you said between ú2.50 and ú2.90, what was the
actual basic? The basic was the ú2.50, was it?
       A. Yes, as far as I remember.

  Q. Right. You would get extra if you worked unsocial hours?
       A. The bands changed between 7.00 p.m. and 11.00 p.m.; and
       then from 11.00 p.m. until 7.00 a.m. was another rate;
