Day 139 - 21 Jun 95 - Page 49

       your statement?
       A. I am sorry, which one?

  Q. Your own personal statement, page 10.
       A. Yes, I am there.

  Q. Just a second?
       A. Sure.

  Q. You can read it to yourself to refresh your memory, if you
       like?
       A. OK. I know what went on.

  Q. I am trying to work out the timescale. McDonald's first
opened in Puerto Rico in the 1960s. Do you happen to know
       what year?
       A. No, I do not.

  Q. At the beginning it says: "Mid 1960s disputes over trade
unions had arisen". Would that sound fairly reasonable?
       A. Excuse me, sir?

  Q. Is this before your time?
       A. Anything before 1974 would be before my time.

  Q. Right.
       A. If I can help you a little bit, I think that "1960
labour duty", they must mean the 1974 labour dispute. Just
to try to move this thing along, I think they have got the
dates all screwed up as they have many other things all
       messed up.

  Q. When did you open in Puerto Rico?
       A. I do not know; before my time.

  Q. Do you not know things like that, when countries started
their first McDonald's business? Is that not something
that you, as someone who flies around the world to deal
with personal matters and human relations, would know?
       A. No, I am not enthralled with ancient history; I want to
know things as they are when I become employed and I want
to know what happens during my employment period. The fact
that something may have happened prior to my employment
period, unless it has some direct bearing on what I am then
currently doing, I really do not care to know whether it
was 1960, or 1961, or 1962. There may be some historians
who might have an interest, but I have got far more
       important things to worry about.

  Q. You said: "Initially the Puerto Rico stores were operated
by Mr. Goldstein from Washington DC". How long was he
operating the Puerto Rico stores for, roughly, from what
you have heard, what you recall?
       A. I would love to help you, but I cannot help you because
       I do not know.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I do ask where this could possibly be
leading to. This witness cannot give evidence about what
       happened?
