Day 073 - 13 Jan 95 - Page 33

Q. Under best management practices?
A. Under best management practice, under the latest
Swedish forestry law.

Q. I think we have largely dealt with Finland. Maybe just one
more reference on Finland. The reference number is:
"Finland and Forest - a Success Story". Could I just hand
a copy of that to the Judge which means I have not a copy
myself. You have not a copy yourself?
A. I have not got a copy myself.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You have the copy. What I suggest is you
hold on to the copy there for the moment.

MR. RAMPTON: Does your Lordship not have one?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No.

MR. RAMPTON: I will hand mine. (Handed)

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you.

MR. MORRIS: Can you say what this document is?
A. The document itself was a compilation by various
environmental groups in Finland that was presented at the
time of the Helsinki Conference Protection of Forests, June
1993, which gave an alternative view on the situation of
Finnish forests to that of the government and the forest
industry in Finland. There are two areas I would like to
refer to; one is about species loss and the other is about
adherence or otherwise to environmental guidelines in the
forest industry.

Q. On the species loss, that evidence was put to Mr. Mallinson
about that. I do not think you need to read it all out,
but if you can just refer to that section so that -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do have this. I will hand it back. Thank
you.

MR. MORRIS: If you just want to may be deal with the species
loss by referring to the relevant passage and then just
making comment?
A. Yes, basic -----

Q. What page and paragraph?
A. We are on page, actually we are on page 8. There is
not a page 8 as it is, but it is opposite page 9, the last
paragraph: "The result: Endangered wildlife". Basically,
what happens is this paragraph refers to the Committee from
the Ministry of the Environment looking into species loss
and, according to the report of the Ministry of the
Environment's Committee: "692 species are threatened
solely because of forest management, i.e. forest management
is responsible for 40.9 per cent of causes leading to
endangerment". I think that really sums it up.

Q. What is the other?
A. The other one is an article, you might call it,
