MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will have the five minute break. You can
say your farewells to Mr. Olive and get yourself ready to
carry on with Mr. Claire's cross-examination, but we will
not have a break during the rest of the morning, unless the
stenographer asks me for one, in which case I will readily
grant it.

MS. STEEL: Mr. Claire, you attended quite a lot of meetings. I
have not actually counted them all up. The group was a
pretty friendly group and it was fairly open; yes?
A. It was friendly, yes.

Q. Right. You used to chat to people?
A. I would have chatted to members of the group.

Q. You probably would have talked to them about McDonald's

Q. Yes. Well, in fact, it did happen, did it not?
A. I cannot recall specifically, but I probably did, yes.

Q. Right. It would have been a natural thing to do, bearing
in mind that that was exactly what you were investigating?
A. Not necessarily, no.

Q. Well, you were investigating?
A. Yes, that is correct, I was.

Q. And investigating about McDonald's, and you said you knew
it was about the fact sheet which we are being sued over
now?
A. That is correct, yes.

Q. So, it would have been only natural to talk to people about
the antiMcDonald's campaign?
A. No, I disagree.

Q. You disagree?
A. Yes.

Q. Why?
A. Because I was meant to join the group and learn what I
could, or glean what I could, about the organisation. To
go in there and specifically ask some questions about the
organisation may have raised alarms.

Q. Right, but when you have been there for a couple of
meetings and, you know, basically been accepted it would
have been only natural for you to turn to people and say,
