Day 269 - 25 Jun 96 - Page 56

you can retard the development of cancer in that way.

These are very interesting results but I do not think they
are actually pertinent to this issue.

  Q. I do not understand then why you cited it in support of
       your original statement.

MS. STEEL: I do not think it was cited in the report, if you
       look at the statement.
       A. I believe, if I remember correctly, my Lord, I think I
was citing this as one of the cases where the linolenic
acid had been accused, if you like, in the general public
of being a cause of cancer. There were lots of reports
around that time in the lay press about polyunsaturated
fatty acids causing cancer, which emerged from this kind of
work, which is why that work had to be taken very seriously
by the conjoint expert committee in Rome.

  Q. I follow all that, but surely there is a broader lesson to
be learned from work of this kind, is there not, that you
have to be acutely conscious --
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- of the defects of extrapolating from animals to humans?
       A. Absolutely. I have no quarrel with that.

MS. STEEL: Can I just say the reference to this study is on
page 9 of this second statement.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, but I think what you have said a moment
ago appeared at the bottom of page 2 and top of page 3 of
       your second statement?
       A. Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: Can we then go to the third page.

MR. MORRIS: When we said second statement, we are assuming
       there are three statements.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: There is. The third one is the one which was
read this morning. Could I just pause a moment.

  MR. RAMPTON: Sorry, my Lord.

MR. MORRIS: I think you just said second statement, when you
       meant the third statement

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, I said second statement because I meant
the statement which was the second of the two which we had
before us in October of 1994.

  MR. MORRIS: Okay.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: They had a section linolenic acid and which
said much of what Professor Crawford has said. I just want
       to check something.

MS. STEEL: The actual reference to Ip is at the bottom of page
       9 of the second statement.
