Day 007 - 06 Jul 94 - Page 71
1 included in the paper-based packaging for the customer.
2 MR. MORRIS: OK, that is fair enough. Just going back to page
50, I did not understand the heading on page 50. When you
3 say "material discarded to municipal solid waste stream",
does that assume that -- I did not understand that. Just
4 to go straight to the point, rather than beating around
the bush, does matter that gets discarded as environment/index.html">litter go
5 into the municipal solid waste stream?
A. I would suppose so.
6
MR. JUSTICE BELL: It does for the purposes of your -----
7 A. Quantification. I mean, what I presented here is
everything that, essentially, is shipped to the back of a
8 McDonald's restaurant, so I guess .....
9 Q. You have assumed that it does?
A. Yes.
10
Q. In fact, it probably does because it probably goes into
11 municipal refuse and so on, but whether or not that be
sound a comment, you have included the lot on that table?
12 A. Right. I have not gone and quantified what went into
landfills, what went incinerators, what was environment/index.html">litter.
13 I took what it started with. So if it was disposed of
----
14
MR. JUSTICE BELL: You have said this is what is used; this is
15 going to be solid waste?
A. Right.
16
MR. MORRIS: Yes.
17
MR. JUSTICE BELL: End of matters so far as this table is
18 concerned?
A. Correct. Thank you, your Lordship.
19
MR. MORRIS: That is fair enough. So just something that
20 struck me at this time on the recycled paper front: Was
there a lot of consumer concern and general public concern
21 about the whole recycled paper issue in the late 80s in
America?
22 A. I do not recall doing any research in the late 80s.
We have done recent research where we have asked consumers
23 how they would feel if McDonald's put post-consumer
recycled materials in food contact packaging for the US
24 market; there was a small study done in the US. The
consumers that were surveyed were done off site; they were
25 not at McDonald's, and the results indicated that the
customer felt confident that McDonald's would take the
26 necessary measures to ensure good sanitation of their
products.
27
MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am not sure that is what Mr. Morris was
28 asking.
29 MR. MORRIS: No. Were you aware that in the Americas, for
example, there was great public concern? There were
30 groups formed and articles in the paper, the whole area of
recycling of paper was a public issue and a public concern
