Day 240 - 24 Apr 96 - Page 36

       A. Yes, he is, though it is easier in relation to this map
to see that he has distinguished between all humid, or wet,
or rainforest types and dry tropical forest because in
Costa Rica the only area in which dry tropical forest is
known, or the conditions which support dry tropical forest,
is up in the northwest peninsula and the province of
Guanacaste, but the whole of the rest of the country is
covered by various types of moist, humid, wet rainforests.

MR. MORRIS: As far as that second map is concerned, showing the
deforestation of Latin America's near Arctic tropical
rainforests regarding Costa Rica, would you accept Dr.
Cotter's estimation of the land area that he defines as
       tropical rainforests?
       A. Yes, broadly speaking, I would.

MS. STEEL: Just while we are on Costa Rica, the last thing to
look at on this. I am not a hundred per cent sure where
this is in the bundles. I think it is in supplementary
bundle 8, kingfisher blue, which should be on the shelf
       behind you at the bottom?
       A. What number?

  Q. It should be supplementary bundle 8.

MR. RAMPTON: If I am told what document it is, I can probably
        ----

MS. STEEL: It is the book Tropical Rainforests. It is not the
       whole book.

MR. RAMPTON: Is it that map?

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: I have that behind Dr. Carriere's statement. I do
not know if it is one of his documents or not.

MS. STEEL: Not that one specifically but it does not matter if
       it is behind there.

THE WITNESS: I am familiar with that map.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you look at G2 in the bundle you have in
front of you, since have that bundle there, divider G
divider 2. It is quite near the front. There should be a
       G divider?
       A. Yes.

  Q. And then sub-divider 2?
       A. It does not appear to be here. That is a renowned map.
I am well aware of it from my studies.

MS. STEEL: Can I say the only thing I have marked was San
Isidro, I have actually marked where I think San Isidro is
       on it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not worry about that. (Handed).

MS. STEEL: You said you are familiar with that map. Do you
