1 products that McDonald's buys from them is 100 per cent
recycled deemed, yes.
2
Q. But that says 100 per cent, does it not? So if it does
3 not say 100 per cent, it might be -----
4 MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. He has disagreed with that. That is
the second time you have put it and he said no. If you
5 have a reason to think he is wrong about, pursue it, but
just putting the same question a second time will, no
6 doubt, get the same answer.
7 MR. MORRIS: All I can say is comparing one that says deinking
with one that says 100 per cent deinking, I would have
8 thought it was quite reasonable to assume that when it
says just deinking it is not 100 per cent deinking?
9 A. As I said before, the product that McDonald's buys
from any mill that says deinking is 100 per cent recycled
10 and 100 per cent deinking.
11 Q. So do you make specifications to the mills about whether
they should provide you with recycled or virgin paper?
12 A. We do make those specifications, but we make those to
the converter because we buy from the converter, we do not
13 buy from the mill per se.
14 MR. JUSTICE BELL: The converter is the company in the supplier
column, is it?
15 A. Right, that is the guy that cuts up the napkins for us
and folds them.
16
Q. Then it is up to him where he gets his raw material from?
17 A. Very much so.
18 MR. MORRIS: That is for environmental considerations?
A. Yes, one of the ways to reduce environmental impact,
19 in our judgment, is to use recycled content.
20 Q. Is there any other environmental specification you make on
your suppliers with regards to the mills they choose?
21 A. I did not say we did any specifications of mill
choices. It is to the converter and we tell him what we
22 want in the package and it is his discretion where he gets
the raw materials.
23
Q. Right. What I am saying is that the only environmental
24 specification you make to your supplier, that it has to be
recycled or it has got to be whatever?
25 A. Things we might ask our supplier for for paper
packaging would be to use less bleaching. We have a
26 hierarchy of our preference of bleached products. We
prefer unbleached than bleached with given certain
27 technologies, and then fully bleached bright white as one
of our lower preferences. We like recycled content in our
28 packaging from the paper suppliers. We like them to
source reduce it as much as they can initially. We ask
29 them to minimise any emissions from their plant and we
keep it dead general. We just ask them to reduce
30 emissions because I do not run the plants, so I do not
know what emissions -- nor do I wish to -- but I want them
