Day 262 - 13 Jun 96 - Page 29
Q. I will do the rest of my questions on this date first. You
have got, on the final page of these notes:

"At 10.20 p.m." -- this is the second paragraph -- "Helen,
Jane, Dave and myself left the building. As arranged,
I left the building talking to Helen Steel."

You confirm that, yes?
A. That is what I have got, yes.

Q. So you had been asked to leave the building talking to me?
A. I do not remember, but it is possible, yes.

Q. Do you recollect what the purpose of that was for?
A. I do not recollect, no, but I can only assume it would
have been to aid any surveillance that might have occurred
or any identification.

Q. So you were aware that people were being followed home from
meetings to ascertain addresses?
A. Yes, I was aware that that was to happen at certain
times. It was not something that happened at every
meeting, but it certainly happened throughout the course of
the time that I was there.

MR. MORRIS: When Helen said "a certain", she meant
"ascertain". It came out as "certain" on the transcript.

MS. STEEL: You have made a note that Jane was meeting friends
in a club later. That was a fairly regular occurrence, was
it not?
A. With Jane?

Q. Yes; that she would go to a club after the pub; she would
not go home?
A. Well, as far as I am aware. I recall, certainly on
more than one occasion, her saying she was going to a club
afterwards.

Q. So it would have been very difficult to follow her home
from a meeting, for example, to find out her address,
bearing in mind that she was virtually always going to a
club after -----
A. Well, I cannot say that she was virtually always going
to a club afterwards. I can say that I was aware of it on
some occasions. It would not necessarily make it any more
difficult, just the observation lasted longer.

MS. STEEL: It would have made it very difficult, as well, if
she had gone to a nightclub?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, you know, there is no difficulty in
finding where someone lives if you are determined about it.

MS. STEEL: The final paragraph says: "Throughout much of the
time in the offices, before Helen Steel arrived, Alan" --
that is Alan, the inquiry agent, yes?
A. Yes.

Q. "...Jane and Dave were answering letters which involved
