Day 249 - 14 May 96 - Page 49

  Q. Saying, "We do not like this leaflet that you have
       printed"?
       A. No, no. This was a curiosity plus "can I find anything
about them" visit; I was not going to knock on the door
       myself.

  Q. But you did not have to knock; you did not put out a letter
       ---
       A. No, I did not put anything through the door.

  Q. -- "we do not like X Y Z points in your leaflet; please
       stop distributing it"?
       A. No.

  Q. Having discovered that that was the address of the group
you did not ask your solicitors to write any such letter at
       that time?
       A. No, this is where we come to a difficulty. I felt
       I did.

  Q. You think you did?
       A. Yes, I am sure I asked Barlows to write yet again.
This was following the receipt of the pamphlet complained
of. Now, in fairness, Barlows have searched their records
       and can find no .....

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That would be '87 some time, would it?
       A. That would be '87, '88, my Lord, yes. By this time the
leaflet or versions of the leaflet and/or versions of the
leaflet were coming out at me from all over the place.

MS. STEEL: OK. You think you instructed them?
       A. I am sure I did.

  Q. Did you follow it up and say, "I asked you to write a
letter; have you had a reply"?
       A. No, I do not think I did.

  Q. So you just forgot about it?
       A. No, I did not forget about it. I just took it that
       they had written.

  Q. But you were not interested to find out the result?
       A. I cannot remember whether I spoke to them about it
       again.

  Q. You were not shown a draft of a letter, or anything like
       that?
       A. No, I do not think I was shown a draft in 1984. I just
took it that they had written.

  Q. But surely you would have been very interested to find out
if the group had replied and what they had said?
       A. I was on the first occasion. I cannot remember whether
I discussed it with them or not and I, you know, I cannot
take it any further because they cannot find any record of
       a letter having gone.

  Q. You do not have a record in your offices or in your diary,
or wherever, saying that you had instructed Barlow Lyde &
