Day 014 - 20 Jul 94 - Page 23
1 A. Yes.
2 Q. RDA (recommended daily amounts) was used, at any rate, up
to or beyond 1979?
3 A. Yes.
4 Q. Perhaps 1979 was when they first changed that from RDI, is
that what happened?
5 A. I think so.
6 Q. Now we get: "DRV: Dietary reference value. A term used
to cover LRNI, EAR, RNI and safe intake". We are coming
7 to those in a moment. Is that the state of the art
terminology "DRV" in this country?
8 A. Well, that is what has emerged from this report.
9 Q. EAR is the "Estimated Average Requirement of a group of
people for energy or protein or a vitamin or mineral.
10 About half will usually need more than the EAR, and half
less". That would depend on what they are doing, who they
11 are, what their size is and so on and so forth?
A. Yes.
12
Q. "LRNI: Lower Reference Nutrient Intake for protein or a
13 vitamin or mineral. An amount of the nutrient that is
enough for only the few people in a group who have low
14 needs". Then: "RNI: Reference Nutrient Intake for
protein or a vitamin or mineral. An amount of the
15 nutrient that is enough, or more than enough, for about
97% of people in a group. If average intake of a group is
16 at RNI, then the risk of deficiency in the group is very
small".
17
Does that mean that when we are talking about the needs of
18 the population at large, if we are going to generalise for
a particular vitamin or mineral or protein, we use RNI?
19 A. Yes, that is what we normally do.
20 Q. "Safe intake: A term used to indicate intake or range of
intakes of a nutrient for which there is not enough
21 information to estimate RNI, EAR or LRNI. It is an amount
that is enough for almost everyone but not so large as to
22 cause undesirable effects". Then there are "Terms
relating to fat". I will not trouble you with those now
23 because we are going to come to those. "Terms relating to
carbohydrates" and "Terms relating to proteins".
24
Did the committee which produced this report whose
25 membership we see on page (ix) give birth to a number of
different panels to look at different problems?
26 A. Yes, as I understand it, that is how the procedure was
conducted.
27
Q. Do we see the membership of the different panels listed on
28 the next succeeding pages as far as little (xvi)?
A. Yes.
29
Q. Taking as an example, the panel on DRV's (as I will call
30 them, if you do not mind) "Working Group on Fat and
Carbohydrates" on page (xii). Cast your eye down the
