Day 263 - 14 Jun 96 - Page 65

       you would probably remember him?
       A. I might.

  Q.   You said before you do not remember what Jane looks like;
       is that correct?
       A. Yes, I said that.

  Q. Jane is sitting here.
       A. Yes.

  Q. You do not remember her?
       A. Well, I have a vague recollection, yes.

  Q. Is there some reason why you do not want to accept that you
had a notebook at the meeting?
       A. No, no reason. I have said that I think on attending
these meetings it is sometimes foolish to take notes; you
       show out.

  Q. You were asked whether you did; never mind whether it was
       foolish or not.
       A. What I am saying, I suppose, is that that is my
practice, and I am pretty sure I would not have taken notes
       at that meeting.

  Q. If you were only going to attend the meeting once, for
example, it would not be that foolish, would it, because it
would not matter if people were being suspicious of you
       later on?
       A. Well, I was not aware that that was going to be the
       only time, I suppose.

  Q. Well, it is our case -- and it is going to be said in the
witness box from Jane Laporte ---

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not -- you must not say that.

MR. MORRIS: -- that you had a notebook, and you said you were a
journalist. Who is telling the truth about that; or is it
just that you cannot remember exactly?
       A. What I can remember is that I took no notes of that
meeting, and I cannot recollect saying anything other than
introducing myself as Jack from Mitcham.

  Q. Can you positively remember that you did not have a
notebook, or are you just saying you do not think you did
and it was not the normal practice?
       A. It is not my normal practice. Therefore, I am certain
that I would not have had a notebook there.

  Q. Because it was not normal practice?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So, you may have done something out of the abnormal (sic),
       but you cannot -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You have to leave it there, and we will see
       what all the evidence is.

MS. STEEL: What do you mean by "normal practice"? I thought
