Day 066 - 14 Dec 94 - Page 34
MR. JUSTICE BELL: November 1992?
A. Yes, that is correct.

MR. RAMPTON: Two years ago or a bit more. Can I take another
Eastern European country, ex-Comecon country, is at tab I,
which is Czechoslovakia. I think I am right, am I not, if
you look at the fax header sheet? It is McDonald's
Czekoslovensko, somebody called Jaroslav Musil?
A. Yes.

Q. If you look over the page, they seem to be doing rather
better than the Hungarians or the Russians at this date.
Do you see that? I cannot read the first question but all
the questions are yes's, I think I am right, apart from the
question about religious slaughter?
A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. It is something "exported to
(country)".

MR. RAMPTON: "Product exported to", if I look at an earlier
one, is what it seems to say. The answer to that is no,
they do not export beef. But all the other questions have
a "yes" answer. Can you read the word which is written
against the question "stunning practice"? It begins with a
"B" but I am not going to try to do the rest of it; it
might be "bolt" but I am not going to say that it is.
A. I think it would be "bolt", "captive bolt", yes.

Q. Can you turn back again? What I would like to do, if
I may, is in a sense a short tour of the world. Turn back
to tab D. We have gone from Eastern Europe to Asia, which
is Malaysia. The second page is about beef slaughter. You
will see it says in the second entry that they get their
beef from Australia, do you see that?
A. Yes, I do.

Q. Yes. They say "yes", "yes". "Gates, fences, chutes have
smooth surfaces?" And they say "sometimes". Can you tell
me whether you know whether the Malaysians are talking
about beef which has been transported live from Australia
or whether they are describing what goes on in Australia?
A. I think personally I have seen both facilities in
Malaysia as well as Australia.

Q. Sorry, you have seen?
A. I have seen both facilities in Malaysia as well as
Australia. I would say that they are referring to the
current conditions in Malaysia, because in Australia they
are world class and they do comply with this animal welfare
practices.

Q. Could you turn over the page and you will see a statement
to that effect at the bottom of the page, it says -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I just pursue that because does that mean
the cattle are actually transported live from Australia to
Malaysia?
A. Sorry, I did not address that. No, we do not move any
product any live cattle from Australia. It is only beef in
