Day 084 - 07 Feb 95 - Page 31

part of a pre-existing file. We see there that the numbers
of RIDDOR accidents -- those are notifiable accidents, are
       they not?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Can you tell us what sorts of accidents are notifiable?
       A. My understanding is that if an employee has been in
hospital for three days or off work for three days that
that is a notifiable; a break; a fracture of bones,
excepting I think a finger; a death, something along those
       lines.

  Q. So if I cut my finger and put one of your blue plasters on
it, that is not a notifiable accident?
       A. That is not notifiable.

  Q. Or I stub my toe on the filing cabinet or whatever it is?
       A. That is not notifiable, in my understanding.

  Q. No. Are you able to tell us -- may be not; may we should
ask Jill Barnes. Every time I ask you a question or
anybody else does that is better answered by one of your
reporting people, such as Jill Barnes, please say so. It
saves time and we will get there in the end with that
person. Do you have any idea how many accidents there are
       annually which are not notifiable?
       A. No, I am afraid I do not.

  Q. Do the restaurants have to keep accidents books?
       A. There is an accident book that all accidents, no matter
how minor they are, are entered in.

  Q. Does McDonald's have any sort of positive policy about
       reporting reportable RIDDOR accidents?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What is that policy?
       A. I am not sure that I know the detail -- maybe Gill will
be able to help you on that -- but it is laid down, trained
into the managers, or the managers are trained to report
these accidents. It is our responsibility to do that
within the company. We would not encourage anyone to cover
that up. It would be against our interests.

  Q. Can we just have a look at these? The first sheet you have
there is the total numbers for each year, I think, is that
       right, it seems to be?
       A. Yes.

MR. MORRIS: I do not know if you have a copy of that because
I think we took that home. There was a previous one, was
       there not?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, it is the one with quite a small diagram
       or graph on it.

MR. MORRIS: There are no spare copies, are there, anywhere? We
       do not have one.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you have one between you?
