Day 138 - 20 Jun 95 - Page 24

Q. Have you seen this before?
A. Yes, I have. As a matter of fact, it has been several
years. I had not looked at this recently.

Q. Do not be afraid. I am not going to ask you to look at
it. I just want to know if you recognise it.
A. Oh, yes.

Q. Was this the thing which PUP had done?
A. Yes, it was.

Q. Was it on the back of that or an aspect of their campaign
that the media campaign was run?
A. Yes. There is no question about it. They were in the
media, in the newspapers, and whoever else would listen to
them.

Q. If you turn over to tab 82 -- again you will be pleased to
know I am not taking you through all these documents -- you
see at page 1439 what may be a familiar figure in the top
right-hand corner, do you see him?
A. Yes, I have seen that before.

Q. Yes, it says: "The real ronald mcdonald exploits
workers". Do not bother about any of the rest of the stuff
which appears on that page; it says: "... exploits
workers. McDonald's pays inner city workers one dollar an
hour less than suburban workers doing the same job."
First question, Mr. Stein, was that at the time a true or a
false statement?
A. Totally false.

Q. What was McDonald's reaction to this campaign? Am I right
in thinking that some black church leaders and some
religious sisters got involved in it?
A. Yes, they did, as well as our owner/operators who are
all black in the -- excuse me, I should not say "all",
there may be one that would be Caucasian, but the remaining
operators were all black. This organisation, PUP,
attempted to involve black ministers and the black
community.

Maybe I can give a little bit of a setting? Our black
operators are very prominent citizens within that
community. Churches are very big importance to them. When
this organisation began to attempt to inflame those
ministers against the owner/operators, they too got
involved, heavily involved, in this process.

Q. Were you personally involved in this particular matter?
A. Yes, I was.

Q. What was the Corporation's reaction to this campaign?
A. At first it appeared to be a typical union attempt that
really does not cause any great concern or alarm, but as
soon as they began to try to inflame racial prejudices
and/or getting media attention, it became a great concern,
their dealing with our reputation at that time.
