Day 101 - 10 Mar 95 - Page 62
supplemented with natural or nature identical vitamins and
minerals. No routine antibiotics or performance enhancers
are used". Why does it say that? Why does it say the part
about "no antibiotics".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: "No routine".

MS. STEEL: Why does it say "no routine antibiotics"?
A. To be honest, I am not sure who wrote this document.
It is certainly not a document that has been published.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We had some debate about that. Do you
recognise the document?
A. What I think it is, it was a draft document which was
the first draft document which was then distributed to the
various departments to check whether what was said here was
totally accurate. I think a lot or some of the things were
changed. They went then into the format that you see in
the Facts booklet which was published.

MS. STEEL: There is nothing in the Fact Book about Oasters, as
it happens, for some mysterious reason.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is virtually what he said just a moment
ago.

MS. STEEL: So does that mean that the whole Oasters section is
incorrect?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I correct that. That is not what he said.
(To the witness): Is there any reason why Oasters should
be omitted from the Fact Book?
A. No, I do not think so. It was not my decision to do
that. I do not know why they were omitted. Whether it was
deliberate or accidental, I do not know.

MS. STEEL: So your department would have seen a copy of this
document as it was being circulated in this draft form?
A. Yes, I think that is where I recognise it from.

Q. Do you know whether, apart from the Fact Book, a final
version of this same document was produced?
A. No, I think this was purely for a draft version for
what was to go into the Fact Book.

Q. So the bits that were unpalatable were edited out for the
version for the public, yes?
A. No, I think a decision was -- again, I am
speculating -- we could not put every single fact that
McDonald's has into the Fact Book. A decision was made,
whether it was by the people that were responsible for
publishing the book -- I expect it was -- that we were only
go to dedicate this much room in the book to this
particular issue. So, it was not put in in as much detail
as this. If you look at the booklet, there is a stack of
figures there, a lot of which are nothing to do with food.

Q. Is it correct that no routine antibiotics are used at
Oasters?
A. I believe that to be the case.
