Day 114 - 04 Apr 95 - Page 50
A. Oh, yes.

Q. What is the prevalence -- obviously, it is difficult to
identify it -- how common is that practice, you feel, that
the seven seconds guideline would be breached or is it
common that it is breached?
A. Well, it was in those days fairly common but things
have changed because, generally speaking, the practices now
with higher amperages where you do not need seven seconds,
there were two ways of getting round this; one was to make
sure that seven seconds was obeyed, the other one was to
have a heavier current and fewer seconds. So, I think that
that problem has been mainly overcome, at least in theory,
by raising the amperage in most plants.

Q. But at Bowes we have heard that they do not use that level
of amperage.

MR. RAMPTON: Which level, my Lord? Mr. Morris seems to have
forgotten that Mr. Bowes gave when he came back.

MR. MORRIS: We are talking about the expert witness, Neville
Gregory.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Then put it in a different way, because if
you say it seems that something did not happen, you may be
preferring the evidence of one witness to another when that
has not yet been decided. You do not have to put what
another witness has said at all. Just put if the situation
was such and such, then I can decide what the situation was
in due course.

MR. MORRIS: Mr. Bowes said on -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, do not put what was said. Just say "if
the situation was" whatever you want the hypothesis to be
before asking Dr. Long's opinion.

MR. MORRIS: OK. All I know is what Mr. Rampton said. He has
calculated -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not bother with that, just put hypothesis.

MR. MORRIS: If it was .45 of an amp -- that is what you said.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just put the hypothesis.

MR. MORRIS: If it was .45 of an amp, as has been alleged by
Mr. Rampton -- I cannot remember what the subject was we
were talking about, but your concerns would be ------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why not let him give the answer, Mr. Morris.
A. As I understand, you are talking about a fully grown 90
kilogram pig, are you?

MR. MORRIS: I believe so.
A. You are giving it .45 of an amp?

Q. That is correct.
A. Presumably, I mean, voltage would help a bit. Can you
