Day 122 - 05 May 95 - Page 50

MR. RAMPTON: Yes. The trouble is I have two versions of the
pleadings so I do not know quite which it is, but I do not
       think there is any difference.

MS. STEEL: In order for crew members to get a pay increase on a
performance review of 10 pence or more, they have to
consistently exceed what is expected of them in the job, do
       they not?
       A. They have to consistently exceed what is expected of
them in the job -- I do not even know what that means.

  Q. McDonald's has expectations of people in the job, yes?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You expect them to do the job properly?
       A. We expect them to do the job properly.

MS. STEEL: And to do it within a certain amount of time,
       efficiently?
       A. If it is a job that can be timed, yes.

  Q. Serving customers within a minute, for example?
       A. Yes.

  Q. All kinds of other things where you have set standards that
       you expect them to meet?
       A. Yes.

  Q. In order for them to receive a pay rise of 10 pence or
above on the performance review, they have to consistently
exceed those requirements of the job?
       A. No, attain them.

  Q. Exceed them?
       A. No, attain them.

  Q. They would get the pay rise of 5 pence if they attain them,
       would they not?
       A. I think if you go to the Crew Handbook it says there
what marks out of a particular number they have to get to
be able to be classified as worthy of a 5 pence rise, of a
10 pence rise and of a 15 pence rise. If they almost
attain the attainable, they will get 15p rise; if they get
fairly close to that, and the figures are there, they will
get 10p rise; if they are a good performer, they will get a
5p rise. But to attain the attainable is what everybody
strives for, but nobody can exceed the attainable, can
       they.

  Q. Can they not?
       A. Nobody can exceed the attainable.

  Q. Perhaps you would like to look at volume XII?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Tab 11 page 409?
       A. Yes.

  Q. The "good" rating which is what gets you 5 pence, you have
to get a score of between 76 and just under 87 per cent?
       A. Yes.
