Day 016 - 22 Jul 94 - Page 36
1 their food more attractive, amongst other things?
A. I think in one or two cases yes. I cannot bring any
2 to mind just offhand. But I could look for you.
3 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Mr. Rampton corrected the other day that
dextrose sprayed on the chips for colour presumably would
4 be because the colour is more attractive; is that right?
5 MR. RAMPTON: I am not sure I got it right.
6 MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I will leave it where it is.
7 MR. MORRIS: It is perfectly reasonable anyway, whether
Mr. Rampton said it or not, to make the food more
8 attractive?
A. Yes, I think it is probably used to prevent the
9 development of deterioration of colour under certain
circumstances, but I could not be 100 per cent sure.
10
MS. STEEL: With the fries, are you saying?
11 A. Yes.
12 Q. I think it does say in the pamphlet it is used to give
them colour.
13
MR. JUSTICE BELL: The colouring of boiled sweets for colour is
14 not just to make them more attractive. No doubt, it does
but, presumably, there is an element of competition
15 between sweet makers to make theirs a more attractive
colour than the next manufacturer?
16 A. Yes, I am sure you are right there.
17 MR. MORRIS: If we go on to page 59?
A. Yes.
18
Q. The EC position on need, you have quoted. I want to ask
19 you a question about when you quote things; does that mean
you are saying that that is what McDonald's should aspire
20 to, or that is what McDonald's already accepts for any
of----
21 A. No. It is not a question of whether McDonald's
accepts it or not. This is what is used in the
22 formulation of the legislation on additives. Basically,
in deciding whether or not an additive should be approved,
23 there are two considerations: (1) is it safe, and (2) is
it necessary? And so in answering the question, "is it
24 necessary", these are the criteria which the EC would take
into consideration.
25
Q. Can you have a think about which additives are used in
26 McDonald's food -- I am taking you away from that
statement for a minute -- in McDonald's food that helps to
27 make food more attractive?
A. Can I?
28
Q. Anything with colouring?
29 A. Again I would need to consult all the information.
30 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Have you got one to put to him?
