important as a source of energy. I think all the studies
that have been done to date in relation to cardiovascular
disease indicate that what is really important about the
fat is the quality or nature of the fat.

  Q. Yes. Just pause there a moment. I understand what you say
about that. Now, what other important nutrients, if any,
would you expect to find in either McDonald's 1 or
McDonald's 3 meals which have not found their way into the
       analysis, if any?
       A. Well, one nutrient that is not there is betacarotene
       and --

  Q. But would you expect it to be in --
       A. I would not expect it to be in a McDonald's meal.

  Q. You would or would not?
       A. I would not.

  Q. No, I am not asking you about that. I am asking you if
there are any which do not appear in the analysis but which
you think must be there, any important nutrients?
       A. I think copper and manganese, trace elements, would be
       present in the McDonald's meal.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you.

MR. MORRIS: I am not sure if that was clear there. You said
about betacarotene. Are you saying that is an important
       nutrient?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, he is.

MR. MORRIS: But it would not be found in McDonald's food?
       A. No.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: No.

  MR. MORRIS: I see.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is what I understand.
       A. I mean, if there is a -- sometimes McDonald's meals
are accompanied nowadays by a small amount of lettuce leaf
and it would have a small amount of betacarotene in it, but
       that is --

MS. STEEL: But in terms of having these nutrients present, is
that the be all and end all, or do we also have to look at
the quantities in which they are present in terms of, you
know, what amounts of these nutrients you are getting
compared to the amount of fat that you are taking in, or
       amount of saturated fat?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You do not need to persuade me about that.
It is just that if it is said that McDonald's meals are not
nutritious at all, I need to know whether, by Professor
Crawford's evidence, they do include important nutrients.

MS. STEEL: I do not think anyone has ever denied or nobody has
