Day 249 - 14 May 96 - Page 59

       private investigators?
       A. Well, I think I advised him that that would be
necessary, but that I thought it could be done.

  Q. Then how long did it take you to take any action to get
that kind of process in motion?
       A. Very quickly. You know, I made arrangements to go and
see Ian Jenkins. I told him the instructions I had been
given by Paul, and I said to him that I wanted at least 2
teams to work independently of one another, and unknown to
one another, with a view to obtaining our objective, which
was to stop the distribution of the leaflet.

  Q. So this meeting would have been in June 1989 would it?
       A. Well, yes, June-July, something like that.

  Q. Right. Then when was the first time... Sorry -- yes, when
was the first time you actually met with anybody from the
       Company of inquiry agents?
       A. The first one was Kings.

  Q. When did you meet them?
       A. I think that was 29th September. I met with the
       managing director.

  Q. Was this the person that you knew?
       A. No, this was the team recommended by Barlows. They had
       used this team before.

  Q. What was the name of the managing director?
       A. Hartley.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Hartley?
       A. Hartley. As in the jam, my Lord.

  MS. STEEL: Mr. Hartley presumably?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Do you know what his first name is?
       A. I might have heard it, but I do not know.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Does it matter particularly?

MS. STEEL: I think, actually, I have. I went to Companies
House and I think there are two Hartleys, so the father and
       the son?
       A. This one was, I would say, well into his 70s. He was
an incredibly old man for doing the job he was doing. I
       was quite surprised.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The witness statement which Ms. Steel served
the other day, the lady there said that he was 76 and he
had come back in because the previous managing director had
       got ill?
       A. Yes, that was the person I met.

  Q. But still very active, she said he was?
       A. He was still very bright, but he looked his age.

MS. STEEL: OK. Was he the only person that you met from that
