Day 119 - 02 May 95 - Page 61

       A. Yes.

  Q. The first sentence: "Staffing and retention are closely
       related issues"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Would you agree with that?
       A. Yes.

  Q. In the second sentence: "Many problems are the by-products
of under-staffing", would you agree with that?
       A. Yes, I would say under-staffing would cause problems.

  Q. "Under-staffing puts additional pressure on everyone and
results in frustration for management and crew", do you
       agree with that?
       A. Yes.

  Q. "Causes of turnover: It is crucial to understand the
reasons why people leave McDonald's." Would you say it is
crucial to understand the reasons why people leave
       McDonald's?
       A. I think it would be wise, certainly.

  Q. "Some of the most significant reasons people give for
leaving are" under "poor treatment: Lack of recognition,
poor people practices, dissatisfaction with pay low and/or
infrequent raises". Are these things which you have heard
       people say as complaints?
       A. No, I cannot honestly say I do. I cannot really help
you on this. I suspect that this information comes as a
       result of an opinion survey.

  Q. In America or somewhere?
       A. Well, it possibly was America. We have held them here,
and, again, Lyn Mead is the person to ask about opinion
surveys. I never ran one whilst I was in the Personnel
Department, but they have run them since.

  Q. So that would be a survey of crew members?
       A. They would do surveys on both crew and salaried staff.
       Separate surveys.

  Q. Separate surveys?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I understand. Have you heard people say, under the next
point, "Lack of orientation and training" that a reason for
leaving would be no job enjoyment or satisfaction?
       A. No, perhaps I can help you here. My knowledge of exit
interviews would extend to the very few senior staff that I
have interviewed on leaving the company. I look back over
my eight years and that may be a dozen people. That is
       all.

  Q. Maybe we will leave that there. So as far as sackings are
concerned, though, then presumably you do keep copies
       of -----
       A. Dismissal records?
