     3   Q.   Is that the general position with company policies, that
     4        they are guidelines, but, you know, in the real world, and
     5        practically speaking, you are not always going to comply?
     6        A.  There are certain company policies which cannot be
     7        broken, but the question of hours is one for the manager
     8        and his operational supervisors to control.

    10   Q.   Are there any personnel rights that cannot infringed by
    11        management under any circumstances?
    12        A.  What do you mean by "personnel rights"?

    14   Q.   The rights of the crew members?
    15        A.  Well, tell me.

    17   MR. JUSTICE BELL:  Put one to him which you think might be

    20   MS. STEEL:  I am just asking whether there are any.

    22   MR. JUSTICE BELL:  I know, the trouble is unless you have put a
    23        specific one, I am not going to draw any conclusion other
    24        than he might not just have thought of it at this moment
    25        whilst he is in the witness box.  The trouble with these
    26        sort of general questions: "Can you think of?" -- to coin a
    27        favourite phrase of Mr. Rampton's -- it is "blindingly
    28        obvious" that there is something which the witness ought to
    29        think of, you may be able to make a comment.  It might just
    30        be that at 10 past 12 on this, the 4th May, he did not
    31        think of it.  So if there is something specifically you
    32        have in mind, ask him, and this will not just slip through
    33        unnoticed.

    35   MR. MORRIS:  I am trying to think what rights crew members may
    36        actually have, that management do not have a right to
    37        overrule.  Can you, at this time, on this day, can you
    38        think of any -----

    40   MR. JUSTICE BELL:  You have worked for the Post Office and, no
    41        doubt, in various other capacities; think of one there that
    42        would have set the place on fire if it had been breached by
    43        management ---

    45   MR. MORRIS:  Quite a lot of things.  For example -----

    48        like pinching a letter or something like that.

    53        which is actually happening, to be of any use.
