Day 069 - 19 Dec 94 - Page 58
metre so.....

Q. Half?
A. What I can tell you, I did not see any signs that the
animals were over-stocked.

Q. Half a square metre per cow is the normal density?
A. I am sorry, I will take that back.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is extremely small.
A. Yes, I am sorry. No, I take that back. Sorry, that is
for pigs. I got my numbers confused. No, I do not know.
I am not sure about the cattle.

MS. STEEL: You do not remember?
A. No, that is correct. What I can tell you, I did not
see any instances where the cattle were over-stocked. They
had the freedom to go, to move around in that pen.

Q. Yes, but over-stocked is a bit of a loose definition?
A. That is correct, it is very loose. Let me put it this,
some other way. I did not see, I did not see any signs
that the animals look over stressed. I did not see signs
that the animals were sick. Everything that I saw (and
there were thousands of cattle) they look healthy and we
look around and around and around.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I just ask you, I have been meaning to --
I do not want to make any enquiries into your personal
background at all -- did you grow up in a rural
agricultural area or not?
A. I grew up in a city in Monterrey in Mexico. My family
had a -- my grandfather, so we visit his ranch.

Q. But you were not brought up on a farm?
A. No, I was not brought up on a farm. I would spend days
on a farm just for the fun of it.

MS. STEEL: These feed lots, are they cleaned out?
A. It would depend on the conditions of the environment.
If need be, they can be cleaned. If the environment is
dry, there is not, there is no need for it.

Q. The one that you went into in Australia was that cleaned
out?
A. I do not know what your definition of cleaned out. It
depends, did they contain manure? That is no way you can
avoid it. They look OK, I walk inside of a pen ....

Q. But they are in there for, what did you say, 100 days?
A. Roughly 100. In Australia, they were looking at a
little bit longer because they do not have the technology
as developed as United States, because that is a new area
for them. They are exporting now -- that market goes
mostly to Japan. Previous to that they did not have feed
lots, just their recent market, where they are having
difficulty now exporting into the US, though the biggest
market right now is Japan, so they are targeting that
market.
