Day 291 - 31 Oct 96 - Page 30

The final point on Mr. Lyman is that he was asked to
comment on one of the sentences in the London Greenpeace
fact sheet, the sentence: "In the slaughterhouse, animals
often struggle to escape". And he said: I have seen
animals that have had the opportunity to partially escape.
They are absolutely terrified, almost impossible to
recapture. The only way that they could be calmed is to be
killed. They hunted them down whether they were on the
kill floor or whether they were in the slaughter house
proper. There is no doubt that those animals when they
went to slaughter were terrified and would do anything
within their power to escape. No doubt about it.

That is basically it on Mr. Lyman.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What else have you got to do on rearing and
       slaughter?

MS. STEEL: I think Dave has a little bit. I am not sure.
(Pause) I have just got some pits and pieces on policy. I
mean, certainly I am expecting to be finished tonight.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Then are you going to say anything more,
       Mr. Morris?

MR. MORRIS: I have just got about fifteen minutes or
       something.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think we should try and finish you both
       tonight.

MR. MORRIS: And tomorrow I am going to start with packaging.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. I will say it now so that you can think
about it just during the break we are about to have; but
I think when you come back tomorrow morning I would like
you to come back together with a schedule for me, albeit it
may have some approximations in it, of how you are going to
plan your submissions on the various topics into the
future, so I can look at that and get some feel for it and
       see where we are going.

MS. STEEL: I do not know whether or not we can do that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you do not, I will have to do it for you.

MS. STEEL: The thing is -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I would welcome your assistance in giving me
some idea. So far, we had a day last week of general
matters from Mr. Morris, three and a half days from
Mr. Morris on the environment, and so far we have had
virtually four days from you, Ms. Steel, on rearing and
slaughter. That may be because you see environment and
particularly the rainforest as an important topic in the
leaflet and it may be in Ms. Steel's case that she sees
rearing and slaughter as a particularly important matter.

But a lot of the time, particularly this week, has been in
giving me references and then reading out parts of
