       A. The Surgeon General has made authoritative statements
       on nutrition.

  Q. But he is in the 30 per cent 10 per cent school, is he
       not?
       A. "He" is a "she" at the moment.

  Q. I am sorry about that; "he" in these courts includes
       "she", I am afraid.
       A. I am not aware of what recommendations she has made.

  Q. Can I suggest, Dr. Barnard, that whether you be a prophet
or a false prophet is another question, but that you are
in a sense out on a limb so far as mainstream medical
opinion in the United States is concerned?
       A. That is not my understanding.

  Q. What material do you offer to contradict that proposition
       of mine?
       A. When I write books about nutrition, I try to make sure
they are fully referenced as much as is possible and to
include those references as appropriate in the back of the
volume for the readers to give due attention to, and in
that volume I believe those number 325 or somewhere
       thereabouts.

  Q. May we, as I promised, Dr. Barnard, have a quick look at
one or two passages in the book? What I will do is to
pass you, if I may, the whole of this book? Have you had
a chance to look at this book which you have been
supplied, I hope, in good time for your visit?
       A. I am not quite sure what it is?

  Q. Its called "Dr. Barnard Cross-examination Documents".

MR. MORRIS: I think we showed it to you.
       A. Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: That was the purpose of it. Can I pass it up?
The first part of it contains copies of pages from the
book. (Handed) The first passage I would like you to look
at, please, is on page 151. Do you have that?
       A. Yes.

  Q. If you look back at 149, you will see that that passage to
which I am about to refer you on 151 falls under the
general heading "Foods to Avoid" and a subheading "Meat,
       Poultry and Fish"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So the advice is to avoid meat, poultry and fish, is it
       not.
       A. Yes, that is right.

  Q. The last paragraph on page 151 above the subhead "Dairy
Products" reads as follows: "Filth" by which I understand
you in the earlier part of this section to mean
contamination in the water in which fish, whether sea fish
or fresh water are to be found, "Filth is not the only
reason to skip fish. Many have promoted fish as a
