Day 263 - 14 Jun 96 - Page 41

       called Paul?
       A. I do not remember what I was convinced or not convinced
about. He simply referred to himself as Paul, and that is
       how I have noted it.

  Q. But, I mean, everybody else only referred to themselves by
their names, but you have not put all their names in
       inverted commas?
       A. I cannot tell you any more. That is my recollection of
the event. I do not recollect seeing Brian Bishop at
meetings, or I did not, until you have just pointed it out,
know who that Paul was. That is simply how I have noted it
       at that time.

  Q. Right. OK.

"...at 8 p.m. by Marion. Alan arrived shortly afterwards
and the meeting commenced. We were also joined by
Jane Laporte, Helen Steel" -- and you say a girl called
Roseanne was also present. So the Alan there is Alan from
       Catford, from the -----
       A. I would assume so.

  Q. You have made a note there that the red telephone bill has
been received, and that I had said that I was not able to
pay the bill as I did not have the bank book which was
supposed to be in the possession of Paul Gravett. You
       confirm that; yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. You do not recollect saying anything about Mr. Morris being
the other person -- that it being myself and Mr. Morris,
rather than myself and Mr. Gravett?
       A. What being yourself and Mr. Morris?

  Q. The discussion about the bank book and paying the phone
bill. It is your recollection that the discussion related
to myself and Mr. Gravett, rather than myself and
       Mr. Morris?
       A. I do not recall the whole discussion. I can only say
what I have made in my note, and that was that the bank
book was believed to be in the possession of Paul Gravett,
and you had made a comment that you could not pay it.

  MS. STEEL: OK.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: "A man calling himself Paul", just think
about that. Wherever you had a newcomer come in, you just
said "someone called" and then a name, and on that sheet
you say "a girl called Roseanne"; you do not put that in
inverted commas. Does it not look to you as if you thought
the man calling himself Paul might not have been called
       Paul, in fact?
       A. My Lord, I do not recollect what my feelings were at
the time. All I can say is that I did not know
       Brian Bishop at that time.

MS. STEEL: There is then a discussion about the public
meeting, and it was still to go ahead under the title of
"Anarchism versus Socialism: Is there a difference",
