Day 060 - 02 Dec 94 - Page 68
material such as mill growth that are routinely internally
recycled to make the same or a very similar product". In
other words, internal to factory that has off cuts that are
just put back into the same process, it is not even
recycled at all?
A. I understand that. I do not think that is what we are
talking about, but I do understand that.

Q. That is all on that file. Just while Helen is preparing
another series of questions, I will just dodge to something
we missed out when we looked at pink Volume V again. If we
look at page 684 in that tab 39, this related to something
a bit earlier but I neglected to bring it up then. Do you
have ---
A. Tab 39.

Q. -- page 684?
A. Yes.

Q. This is June 1990?
A. Yes.

Q. "Packaging - the Facts. McDonald's have always been
committed to environmentally sound business policies".
This is regarding the difference between polystyrene and
paper: "The packaging McDonald's uses today as a result of
years of study". That means McDonald's looked into the
implications of its packaging, yes, over a long period of
time?
A. The US Corporation would have done that, yes.

Q. This is the UK fact sheet?
A. I know, but the specification for packaging comes from
the US. So the US Corporation would have carried out the
years of study -- we were only just about in business in
the mid-70s.

Q. It says here up to the mid-70s. OK. "McDonald's use paper
and paperboard packaging for all products, but because of
serious concerns at that time for environmentalist about
the destruction of trees, water pollution and the high use
of energy involved in manufacturing paper, we began to
re-evaluate our paper packaging choice."

So there is a recognition there, is there not, that there
have been serious concerns about the environmental effects
of using a large amount of paper packaging; is that
correct?
A. Yes.

Q. Then you say: "McDonald's uses polystyrene foam packaging
for the same reasons hospitals, supermarkets, grocery,
shops and other restaurants do. It provides the safest and
most sound and suitable way to serve hot fresh foods. Foam
packaging is more energy and resource efficient to produce
than paper or cardboard". You say in the UK -- that is not
what the conclusion we saw earlier on which you agreed with
of the McDonald's and Environmental Defence Fund conclusion
about the high percentage of extra to polystyrene
manufacturing of, for example, emissions, water use, do you
