1 polystyrene to make the foam.
2 Q. I see. Point 4: "Confirm that we started supply of foam
boxes in China in January 93"?
3 A. OK.
4 Q. What is the point of that? That means they were using
HCFCs to China in January 1993?
5 A. Correct. They were a supplier to that market.
6 Q. Those foam boxes, were they, I might have got this wrong,
were they supplied by a company in America?
7 A. No. Pacific Cup -----
8 Q. Or was it replaced by a company in America?
A. Pacific Cup appears to have an address in Hong Kong.
9
Q. Yes, I understand that. But I thought you said they
10 brought those materials?
A. I said they licensed technology to produce. Dow in
11 America developed a technology that enabled an industrial
process to use C02 as a blowing agent for polystyrene foam
12 and subsequently sold, not sold that licence, but licensed
that technology to Pacific Cup for a fee.
13
Q. Did you in America, did McDonald's ever have paper
14 packaging before they had polystyrene packaging for the
same purpose?
15 A. I think prior to 1985 there was paper and paper board
packaging used rather than foam clam shells.
16
Q. So when you changed to HCFCs in 1988ish, you could have
17 changed to paper packaging?
A. Well, in 1975 when some transition was made from paper
18 board to foam, there were studies done that found that the
use of the foam package had a less environmental impact
19 than did use of paper board packaging in our country. So
we knew that if that was the case then, the industry
20 conducted a study in 1990 showing that the environmental
impact of using those paper board containers was either
21 balanced with or worst than using the foam containers in
our country with the given regional issues in the
22 environment we had. So we did not feel that was a good
alternative.
23
Q. It was an alternative but not as good as HCFC-22?
24 A. It was not as good an alternative, no.
25 Q. Even though HCFC-22, HCFCs were known to damage the ozone
layer but only at small rate, you still chose to carry on
26 using those when you could have chosen paper?
A. We chose the alternative with the least environmental
27 impact as we knew it.
28 Q. OK. For pentane and butane you said emissions of
hydrocarbons has a problem in the atmosphere. What
29 exactly are the problems caused by the emissions of
pentane and butane?
30 A. I think that was already established. They are,
hydrocarbons cause smog and they contribute to enhanced
