Day 150 - 07 Jul 95 - Page 65
not -- you were not disadvantaged by students coming in
working two or three weeks during term time and still
getting the same amount of holiday pay. So, it definitely
reinforced the idea of having stability on our payroll.

MS. STEEL: You mentioned a scenario where students were
working for you who were at Leicester Polytechnic?
A. Right.

Q. They were working for you during term time?
A. Right.

Q. Presumably that was, what, on Saturdays and maybe one
evening a week?
A. About that, yes.

Q. Through the term?
A. Whenever they were available usually, and that was part
of the discussions when they came back. There were,
obviously, exams in those situations, but they or my
assistants would sit down with them and work out what
fitted in with their schedule and what fitted into our
requirements. But, generally, a Saturday and a Wednesday
night or a week day night would be all they required, so it
did not interfere with studies.

Q. Then you talked about during the holidays ---
A. Right.

Q. -- they might want to go and work at the Glasgow branch or
something like that?
A. OK, right.

Q. So for the last week in term they are working at your store
---
A. Right.

Q. -- then they move to the Glasgow store the following week?
A. Right.

Q. When they took their file with them, did you fill out a
leaving code or did they just carry on although it was
another store?
A. No, right, we would -- if they were moving to another
store, I think we could transfer them and just simply write
it into the payroll "transferred to Glasgow". If they
subsequently did not tell us they were moving to another
store and a Manager phoned me, then I could tell him or her
what their details were and arrange for the file to go up
there.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, but I think at the moment what Ms. Steel
is getting at is when they would come on and off the list
for turnover purposes. As I understand it, if someone left
to go home ---
A. Yes.

Q. -- unless some special arrangement was made that you would
transfer them on to another payroll, they would count as
someone who had left?
