Day 009 - 08 Jul 94 - Page 20
1
Q. But there must be different percentages?
2 A. There are variations; paper packaging you are dealing
with large suppliers that in general cover a wide
3 geographical territory. In general, they supply multiple
countries.
4
Q. Sorry, your suppliers?
5 A. Specially in paper.
6 Q. Your suppliers?
A. Yes.
7
Q. So your suppliers in the States also export McDonald's
8 packaging to various countries?
A. There is some of that.
9
Q. How many countries would you know approximately?
10 A. I have no idea; it is a minor portion but -----
11 Q. But there are facilities, the facility is there; if a
country wanted to get a particular kind of package, they
12 could get it from a McDonald's supplier in the States?
A. Not necessarily. You want me to explain that?
13
Q. Briefly, yes.
14 A. There are a lot of trade restrictions and government
regulations across the countries. For instance, in Japan
15 -- the country I was at earlier -- there are restrictions
in terms of what they can import, the American products
16 they can use. Also their regulations they have for
packaging are completely different from the United
17 States. So I know we cannot, even if we could trade with
Japan, their restrictions in Japan are just enormous.
18 Because of that, we do not qualify, we do not meet their
standards for some of our packaging.
19
Q. Would you say that, from your experience, the process of
20 awareness about recycled paper, obviously this is a
generalisation I am asking you, would be roughly the same
21 throughout the world? What I mean is the famous sea
change, was there in general that kind of development that
22 mirrored or in some way reflected throughout the world at
that time?
23 A. What time?
24 Q. We are talking about, you know, 1990-ish?
A. No, the landscape across the world was vastly
25 different, enormously different. There were countries --
still are countries today -- where the recycled issue is
26 not even on the first ten pages of the issues they are
dealing with. When I said what I said, that is speaking
27 in a global sense. Your question was on a global sense;
how the countries, not McDonald's, approached the issues,
28 is that correct?
29 Q. I mean really McDonald's?
A. OK.
30
Q. I understand that the awareness is -- I mean America -----
