Day 248 - 13 May 96 - Page 27
A. No, but it was all about the same time. It was the
animal liberations link that I had seen and the support of
them by the London Greenpeace group that was just alarming
to me, having had these incidents.

Q. You so your position is that you had seen the
London Greenpeace leaflet, which is attached as an appendix
to your statement, in 1989 before you started to take any
action against ----
A. Round that time, round there somewhere.

Q. I am asking to you to be specific, because you are saying
that is the reason why you took this action. So, your
evidence is that you had seen this leaflet before you
decided to take any action?
A. Summertime.

Q. It was in the summertime?
A. It was after the incidents in Milton Keynes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you tell me when they were, those
incidents?
A. I think it was June, July 1989.

MS. STEEL: It is right, is it not, that at the time of the
fire bombing incident you blamed it on Chrissie Hynde and
threatened legal action against her; is that not correct?
A. I did not blame it on anybody. There was an incident
involving her in the West End of London where she -- and
I do not remember the exact words -- had said something
publicly about fire bombing McDonald's. The records of the
media will certainly show that somewhere, it was well
covered in the nation's and world's press. The very next
day we have our incident I learned of this link of
yourselves with the animal liberation people and
I shivered.

Q. In your 'words complained of' bundle we have a whole load
of press cuttings from the Chrissie Hynde incident?
A. Yes.

Q. It does say that the company asked the police to take some
kind of action against Chrissie Hynde, and also that you
threatened her that if she made any comments about
McDonald's again that you would take action; do you
remember that?
A. No, I do not remember telling her if she made any
comments about McDonald's I would take action. I think we
were speaking about comments of the sort that she did make,
which may very well have been the reason something happened
24 hours later in the Anglia region of Britain.

Q. You are aware that when she made these comments, which she
says were a joke -- you are aware of that, yes?
A. Well, they may have been a joke in her mind, they
certainly were not a joke in mine 24 hours later when what
happened happened.

Q. This was at a Greenpeace international event that she made
these comments?
