Day 015 - 21 Jul 94 - Page 42

     1 opposed to standard coke?

2 MR. JUSTICE BELL: You can have either, can you not, or can
              you?
     3 A. You can, yes.

4 MR. MORRIS: How long has diet coke been available?

5 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I would like to know, do McDonald's only
sell diet coke and not standard coke?
6 A. No, I am pretty sure there is a choice.

7 MR. MORRIS: We will not go into that. But, overall, would you
say that your chart and your figures would have to be
8 revised dramatically if they were based around the period,
say, 1989. Have we demonstrated that?
9 A. We have demonstrated that there have been changes to
individual constituents. Clearly, these are going to have
10 some impact on the final values. But I really cannot see
that they are going to make any difference to the point
11 that I am making, namely, that the contribution of a
typical McDonald's meal to a total diet even by a heavy
12 user in McDonald's terms is relatively small.

13 So, even if we go through, and, you know, assuming I could
get the data and do these other calculations, it is not
14 going to make the slightest difference to the conclusion
that I would come to anyway.
    15
MR. JUSTICE BELL: The calories are about 5 per cent of the
16 weekly intake, are they, again just a very quick
              arithmetic?
17 A. Again of the ones I have here, looking on table 1 ---

    18 Q. 5 is rather more?
              A. -- the calorie intake varies from just under 600 to
19 almost 1,000. It is No. 4, which includes the Big Mac,
the calorie intake there for the total would have been
    20 597.

21 Q. Where do you get 597 from?
              A. This is shown in the first column on the right.
22 I have given the calories, the total calories, for the
              total diet.
    23
         Q. Yes. All I was asking was that the calories in the
24 McDonald's meal are about 5 per cent of the total calories
              for the week?
25 A. It is of that order, yes.

    26 Q. Of that order?
              A. Of that order, yes.
    27
MR. MORRIS: Just while we are finishing off on this: So you
28 said it does not make any difference to obviously
balancing your diet as a whole, but you have drawn up this
29 chart to make some conclusions, is that not right, about
               ---
    30 A. The only -----
