Day 298 - 11 Nov 96 - Page 36
of 150 millimole a day for an adult man to a maximum of a
hundred millimole a day, and a hundred millimole a day, I
did some quick mental arithmetic and thought it came out at
about 2,300. Mr. Rampton tells me, and we can all check if
we want to, it comes out at 2,358. What the grey books
appear to me to be saying is that 41 is saying 1600
milligrams a day is enough for 97 percent of the population
and there is really no need to go above that, and then 46
recommends a maximum of 2,358. Now it may well be that
Miss Brophy had something else in mind to get to the
maximum of 1,600, but all I am saying is it appears to me
at the moment that if she got the 1,600 from COMA 41, which
is where precisely that figure appears, it is not expressed
as a maximum in COMA 41. But it may well be that she had
another reference in mind.

All I am doing is giving you the opportunity, if you wish
to, and in fact are able to take it, of saying no. I mean,
if need be, when you have finished actually making your
submissions, give her a ring or ask someone to give her a
ring and say "can you remember where you got that reference
from". But there you are.

MS. STEEL: I will look it up anyway, because I do remember
this being argued. I don't actually know that it was on
the day that Miss Brophy came in.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What she may say is something like this, but
it is pure speculation: "When I said it was closer to
1,600 maximum recommended, what I was thinking was that
1,600 is enough for 97 percent of the population, so in my
view there is absolutely no justification for having any
more than that", and she has shortened it to saying that is
the maximum recommended. But there you are anyway.

MS. STEEL: I will come back to that anyway.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Let me just make a note in my margin,
query Miss Brophy had some other reference in mind.
(Pause)

MS. STEEL: I cannot remember where I had got to.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What you had got to, you had got to a
reference which was page 8, line 1.

MS. STEEL: That was the previous one.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Then you went from that to saying that the
amount of sodium in her combination number one was 1,488
which was close to the -----

MS. STEEL: Maximum recommended by the government of 1,600
milligrams and that it was above that recommended for a 10
year old child of 1,200 milligrams per day, and that she
added that consumption of a cheese sandwich, in addition to
a McDonald's meal, would easily push the sodium content
above the adult daily recommended amount. That was day 8,
