Day 014 - 20 Jul 94 - Page 71
1 A. Yes.
2 Q. So in that case he is getting just about half ---
A. That is right.
3
Q. -- of his saturated fat allowance for from this meal?
4 A. That is right.
5 Q. For that day?
A. Yes.
6
Q. This is, I am afraid, a grade one primary school question:
7 It follows, does it not, Professor Wheelock, that provided
he ate sensible things at other times during the day, he
8 could repeat that meal seven times a week, 52 weeks of the
year, could he not?
9 A. There should not be any problem.
10 Q. One final thing, Professor Wheelock: Are you conscious
that in America from time to time scientists, doctors,
11 nutritionists and so on -- it is not the final thing --
have recommended lower limits, not as we saw in the
12 official guidelines, but from time to time learned
gentlemen have suggested low limits for total unsaturated
13 fat than we use in this country?
A. Oh, yes.
14
Q. Do you have any view about whether it is a black and white
15 question?
A. At the end of the day it is a matter of judgment that
16 an individual would come to as to what is, shall we say,
the best figure that ought to be achieved. There is no
17 doubt that views on this can differ, views can change in
the light of changing knowledge, changing perceptions,
18 changing attitudes towards diet and all the rest of it.
Given the fact there is a very wide variation in the
19 actual requirement for individuals and that we are dealing
with a very complicated subject, that is entirely
20 reasonable, to my view.
21 Q. Can we go back to table 1? I am not going to go through
the whole of the same exercise so far as the child is
22 concerned. I make this observation: Look at meal 2 which
again I chose as being a sort of middle of the road meal,
23 hamburger, regular fries, regular Diet Coke and apple pie,
using the same tables in the grey book one can find that a
24 nine year-old boy has an energy EAR for a day of 2,040
calories. Will you accept that?
25 A. Yes.
26 Q. Using that as the base figure for the day -- my Lord,
I just give the figures because it is a laborious process;
27 anybody can correct it in due course if I am wrong -- the
number of calories represented by 46.4 per cent of 702,
28 I think, is 327.8?
A. Right.
29
Q. That means that 327.8 calories of total fat is 16, just
30 over 16, 16.06, per cent of the DRV?
A. Yes.
