Day 207 - 23 Jan 96 - Page 49

days in a row. In fact, if you look at the very first day
       it appears he worked -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What sort of day was a Monday in Bath?
       A. A Monday?

  Q. Yes.
       A. Well, it would depend on, basically, the time of year.
I mean, if it was in January, it would be not the quietest
day but the second quietest day. Traditionally, Monday is
the second quietest day in a weekday period.

  Q. The reason I ask is if you look at 582, I appreciate it is
2nd August which may well be a peak period but, apparently,
Miss Mason there worked for, if I have read it correctly --
I may not have done -- eight and a half hours without a
break, had quarter of an hour's break and then worked on
for another two hours, if the clocking in and clocking out
was done accurately. Have I read that correctly? Do you
       see that half way down?
       A. There is, yes, so far as I can see, there is an
adjustment. The asterisk on it indicates that an
       adjustment has been made.

  Q. Where is the asterisk on -----
       A. Within Samantha Mason's name, after we picked the
Friday, 11.36, directly after the "FR" there is an asterisk
       on the same -----

  Q. Where, sorry? On the same page?

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Page 582.
       A. Oh, sorry. I am looking at 594.

  Q. Yes.
       A. I can see, yes. There is no -- it would have been
recorded as she clocked in and out herself.

  Q. That is how she has clocked herself in and out?
       A. Yes.

MR. MORRIS: I am just collecting my thoughts. Anyway, yes,
David Watts worked, between those pages, eight days in a
row. Actually, on page 530, there was something I was
going to ask you about, David Watt on page 530 had 18 hours
51 minutes excess hours. Do you know what that means?
       A. I know it is a cut off point, I believe, above which
the hours he has worked. I cannot remember the exact cut
       off figure.

  Q. So, what do you mean? Can you explain?
       A. Well, say, there was an hour set by the computer, 35
hours; if he exceeds that within the payroll period which
       would have been -----

  Q. This is May 94 when he was 17 years old.
       A. In the period then it would, you know, those are the
hours over and above that limit.

  Q. Sorry, the computer sets a limit which, presumably, is
