I am not saying, by the way, that all of the birds do not
have any of those five basic needs. I am just saying that
it is extremely widespread that the chickens in particular,
seeing as that is what we are dealing with now, do not have
all of those five basic needs met at all times or even -
well, certainly, I mean, in terms of freedom to display
most normal patterns of behaviour, none of those chickens
have that at any stage in their lives, and in terms of the
other freedoms at various points throughout their lives
various of the birds in quite high percentages do not have
       the other freedoms met.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Right. What are you going to go on to next
after the five freedoms? So far as-----

  MS. STEEL: Transport, I think.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: I do not think I have a sheet to hand you for
       that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, well, tell me about transport. (Pause)
You include cattle in transport, do you?

MS. STEEL: Yes. Just before we go on to this part. I mean,
it is relevant to this part. Dr. Pattison said in his
       evidence-in-chief on day 89, page 5, line 25, that
approximately 780,000 birds per week were processed at
Sun Valley's plant in the UK. That is 780,000 broiler
chickens slaughtered and processed every week at
Sun Valley. It is actually possible that that figure has
gone down because of the transfer of the facilities to
France. There might have been more than that before. But
that was the current figure when Dr. Pattison gave
evidence. I am sorry, I have got several bits of paper. I
will try and sort them out.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Sit down and find where you are and then let
us get on with the transport and catching. You can
probably do that if you just stood up, looked at the wall
and told me about it in fact. I can remember most of it
       myself.

MS. STEEL: Yes. Right. I have got pages about other subjects
as well. I am just trying to get them out of the way.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You have got Mr. Bruton about the way they
are picked up. You say that if you look at the numbers,
and so on, that is hardly surprising. And you have got
something, no doubt, to tell me about the shelves they are
put in. You may have one or two other points, but those
seem to be the main things, and then in no time at all we
are into the shackles and the slaughtering processes are we
       not?

MS. STEEL: Yes. Dr. Pattison said that the birds were loaded
