Day 006 - 05 Jul 94 - Page 50

1 Q. "Dear Restaurant Managers, I often get asked what I think
makes a good Ronald visit. The marketing folks ask me to
2 write down my thoughts on this subject and I thought
I would write straight to you, so here goes.
     3
Do something in the store to make the event a really big
4 deal, store decorations and a fancy dress opportunity for
the crew -- all in good taste of course -- helps to create
     5 a fun atmosphere."
              A. Yes.
     6
         Q. It goes on to another couple of points about prizes and
7 about making the event look slick, and then on to No. 4,
              it says -----
8 A. May I raise a question as well, your Lordship?

9 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, certainly.
              A. As she has brought up the document and a reference to
10 previous link, the testimony this morning about safety, in
item 3: "I have a helper, but I need some of your crew
11 and hostesses to help me too and keep all the children in
the area safe". A reiteration of the depth to which
12 McDonald's and its people take the issue of safety, and
the reiteration of how important it is at every level
13 through the company. I am sorry to interrupt.

14 MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. You are entitled to say that.

15 MISS STEEL: Anyway, to go on to No. 4, it says: "I think you
should have some prizes on hand for me to give out to the
16 children who help me. Give-aways too are an important
part of keeping children excited about visiting
    17 McDonald's"?
              A. Yes.
    18
         Q. Then No. 6?
19 A. Every marketing survey, every customer contact we have
ever done when asked: Is McDonald's a good place for
20 kids? or: What do you think about McDonald's? The feed
back is exactly that; it is a great place for kids. And
21 what are some of the reasons kids like to come? Food and,
of course, a flag or a balloon or something which is
    22 interesting to them.

    23 Q. A happy atmosphere?
              A. Absolutely.
    24
         Q. With clowns?
25 A. Most kids like clowns, yes.

26 Q. You could almost call it a circus-like atmosphere?
              A. I am not sure I would go that far, but it is a fun
    27 atmosphere.

28 Q. Right. To go on to No. 6 anyway, it says: "Don't forget,
I am really important to children and, therefore, to your
29 business. No other restaurant has me, obviously, or
anything like me. Kids love me and I know that that is a
    30 real responsibility."
              A. Yes.
