Day 184 - 06 Nov 95 - Page 42
Q. And they worked hard?
A. They work, you know, the best that they can. Some of
them work hard. Some of them do not care about the raise.

Q. Chris Broom was a Swing Manager at the time; yes?
A. Yes.

Q. You have said in your statement at paragraph 17: "We knew
that his father's work involved knowing about employee
relations." What was his father's work?
A. I am not exactly sure what it is, but he was the head
of some company, and he went to meetings that involved
union workers; like, he was there with the -- like, he
would represent employees at these union meetings; like,
that is what I understood it as, that he would go to these
meetings and he would, like, represent people, like the
employees of the company. He was -----

Q. He was the head of the company?
A. Not the head of the company. He helped run the
company; like, he was almost -- from my understanding, he
was a manager at this company, and he would go to these
meetings and represent employees.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The employers or the employees?
A. The employees -- like, the people -- I do not know.

Q. The people who were working there or ---
A. The people working there.

Q. -- who own the company?
A. The people working there, the people working there, he
would represent them at these, you know, union meetings.

MR. MORRIS: He would represent the employees in contrast to the
union who were represented?
A. That is what I understood it as.

Q. So he was against unions, then?
A. Pardon?

Q. He was against unions in the company where he worked, as
well?
A. I am not sure. I mean, he just talked with them. He
was -- he would have meetings with them. I am not sure
what he did there. I mean, for us, all we want to know was
there has been an attempt for a unionisation, you know,
what is the best way or what can we do to stop it, because
we do not, you know, we want our powers back; we feel we
have been misinformed; we do not want it. The only person
we can think of that might know was to ask Chris, and Chris
could ask his father.

Q. In that paragraph, you say: "Chris B., the Swing Manager"
(Chris Broom) "explained that the promises of guaranteed
benefits from union membership which Sarah and Andrew had
made could not be fulfilled, and that enhanced benefits can
only be obtained by negotiation between the union and the
employer."
