Day 037 - 14 Oct 94 - Page 58

Q. The one you cite as Footnote 91?
A. Well, I cannot give you an answer to that because it
is possible I have may have been working from the
abstract.

Q. From?
A. From the abstract.

Q. I will show it to you, if I may. You will need an orange
volume numbered IV which you will find, Mr. Cox, in the
shelf behind you, if you please. It is in two sections.
I ask you to turn to the second section where are to be
found the references made by the Plaintiff's cancer
expert, Dr. Sidney Arnott. Have you found that second
section which runs from 1 to 26 the first and to 13?
A. No. The entire second section seems to be missing.

Q. Try No. 3 within that second section, Mr. Cox, you should
find a divider 3 with a page number at the top?
A. 371.

Q. Just have a look at that first page headed: "Relation of
Meat, Fat, And Fibre Intake to the Risk of Colon Cancer in
a Prospective Study among Women, Walter C. Willett and
others, December 13th 1990. Ask me whether you can
confirm that that is the paper referred to in your book as
footnote 91? Do you see, it comes from the New England
Journal of Medicine?
A. It appears to be the same one.

Q. It does, does it? It is the same date, the same journal,
the same subject matter. You note the conclusions at the
top of the abstract: "These prospective data provide
evidence for the hypothesis that a high intake of animal
fat increases the risk of colon cancer, and they support
existing recommendations to substitute fish and chicken
for meat high-in-fat".

MS. STEEL: Perhaps the witness could be given time to read
the whole of the abstract.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.
A. Could you tell me what the question is?

MR. RAMPTON: You will see in a minute what the question is.
Now, please, turn to the last page of the text of this
paper immediately above the references. I cannot give you
a page, No. 377.
A. Yes.

Q. Then, please, look at the first complete paragraph which
I shall now read: "The absence of a positive association
between dietary fat and breast cancer in this same cohort
has been questioned"?
A. Sorry, can you direct me, please?

Q. The last page of text of this paper which in your copy
will be stamped 377?
A. Right.
