Day 098 - 07 Mar 95 - Page 51

hours, and I know it from general knowledge. There has
been some very recent research on it, in fact, which has
come out only within the last few days.

MR. RAMPTON: At the moment we have arrived at is that it is
quite nice to go in through one's front door and sit down
       after coming off the tube.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What I think you should do (and otherwise you
can leave it completely alone), if now you have a Midland
Meat Packers witness in the witness box you want to suggest
that animals come off lorries showing specific signs of
significant stress, then put it to him. If it is just that
any animal which travels on the back of a lorry is likely
to suffer a degree of stress, then that is probably a
somewhat open door. It just depends how much it is.

MR. MORRIS: You want me to ask that last specific question?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, not that last one. I do not think you
need to ask that. It is if there is a specific matter you
       want to put.

MR. MORRIS: I was hoping about the deaths rate and the sickness
and disabled state, but he does not know.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, I know. You have not got very far on
that because he -- you are certainly entitled to ask but
Mr. Chambers does not know the answer. He said the deaths
are very, very small and he could not offer you any
assistance on the lesser adverse effects.

I have to say, I think the recent research I have in mind
is as to travelling times. I think it is just a specific
body which has offered a new view on hours and things like
that according to species of animal. I am not suggesting
anyone goes hunting for it, but there are people who know
       about these things.

MR. MORRIS (To the witness): You said you had not seen animals
trying to jump over the walls which are in any case quite
high, yes, to escape? Would it be fair to say that
frequently animals, though, turn round, turn round to go
       the wrong way?
       A. At which point?

  Q. When they are going into the race to the -----
       A. They cannot turn round.

  Q. They cannot turn round?
       A. No.

  Q. So is that designed with that problem in mind then,
       specifically designed to be narrow?
       A. To present the cattle to the stunning box in single
file. By virtue of that they cannot turn round.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If they were wide enough to turn round, they
       could probably get two abreast?
       A. Yes.
