Day 038 - 19 Oct 94 - Page 48
Q. Just very briefly if we can look at paper No. 9 which is
your paper No. 9. I do not know if you have your papers?
A. I brought none of the references; my understanding was
that they are supposed to be here.

MS. STEEL: If you look for a bundle with a pale green label,
it should have your name on it; it may be down the bottom.
A. Which number?

MS. STEEL: No. 9.
A. Yes, this indeed is the paper in question, Annals of
Internal Medicine. Yes. Here is one example where a
double-blind challenge study was conducted. Here the
adverse effects were experienced by an adult -- in this
case a physician.

MR. MORRIS: It says in the introduction: "We describe the case
of a physician with an allergic gastroenteritis who had
severe abdominal cramps requiring several
hospitalisations"?
A. Yes.

Q. So it is quite a severe reaction?
A. That is certainly how it is described here, yes,
indeed.

Q. They say: "The cause", in the initial paragraph, "FD&C
yellow No.6 dye (Sunset Yellow, City Chemical Corporation,
New York, New York)"?
A. It was a product of theirs which was used to provide
the challenge.

Q. "Was confirmed by double-blinded challenge"?
A. Yes, indeed.

Q. I think that is enough for the moment. Was there anything
else important in that particular study because we do not
want to spend a long time on studies?
A. Not that I can immediately see.

Q. OK. Maybe we will move on from Sunset Yellow.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Does that give me any information apart from
in relation to that one patient?
A. Not that I can see, no. One double-blind challenge on
one patient.

MR. MORRIS: But is there other evidence?
A. No, in respect of gastroenteritis, but the paper
I refer to in the footnote 1 by Michaelson in The Archives
of dermatology -- I believe I did provide a copy of that
document.

Q. We might as well look at No. 1, page 3.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Does anyone have any key as to what the
references are in the bundles?

MS. STEEL: No. They should be in the order they are in the
footnotes.
