Day 266 - 20 Jun 96 - Page 50

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us look at it this way. If his intake is
3,000 kilocalories a day, let us say that ---

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: -- if he is going to be down to 33 per cent,
that is under 35 per cent, a bit over 30 but under 35
(which you say is the figure to take or one of the figures
to take), then he must not have more than 1,000
kilocalories of fat in that day. This is neglecting
completely the question of whether it is useful to look at
what you eat in one day in a week, or anything of that
       kind.

  MR. RAMPTON: No, I know.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am putting that to one side. But since his
sensible limit is said to be 1,000 kilocal of fat in the
day, he has had nearly -- he has had 580 of that in this
       one meal.

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So he can only take on 420 in the rest of the
day. If he had meal number one again during the day, he
       would have exceeded that.

  MR. RAMPTON: Exactly, just.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: He would have exceeded that just.

MR. RAMPTON: If he had had meal one and meal two he would not
       even have done that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, he would not, but in his third meal he
has got 900 of his kilocal, so he has only got to have 100
in his next one and he is there on the limit. I am putting
aside all thought of whether this is realistic.

MR. RAMPTON: I know. That is my whole point.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So, there I am waiting for my third meal in
the day and thinking of a glass of orange juice.

MR. RAMPTON: Exactly, but you have possibly turned yourself off
food probably for the rest of the week by eating two
McDonald's meals in one day. That is the whole point,
because that scenario, which is what is proposed by those
who say that McDonald's food leads to an unhealthy diet,
has to be the one which is contemplated, which is totally
       unreal.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have put my reservation about it. You ask
       your question, anyway.

MR. RAMPTON: I do not think I can remember what I was going to
       ask!

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If I may summarise what
