Day 254 - 22 May 96 - Page 47
the cancer cells to be stickier. If you were a cancer, you
want your cells to break off and spread because that is the
way that you are going to develop, and to have some process
which makes the cells stickier and keeps them confined in
one place is not an advantage if you were a cancer for
example.

Q. But, to your knowledge, such a theory as that put forward
by Professor Crawford has not been investigated?
A. To my knowledge, no, but I do not have the evidence to
argue that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know whether there is any evidence that
they actually do become more sticky? Until I hear
Professor Crawford, I do not know whether this is just
thinking at large or he has some scientific basis for
thinking that cancer cells do become more sticky if there
is more blood in a person.

MS. STEEL: If that is exactly what he said?
A. We actually know ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If what?

MS. STEEL: I said if that is exactly what he said, which it
might not be. I am trying to put the best ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The only evidence I can hear this afternoon
is from Dr. Arnott. That is why I ask.

Dr. Arnott, do you know of any evidence that cancer cells
do become more sticky if there is more fat in the blood
stream?
A. I do not know of any evidence of that.

MS. STEEL: I will go back to the other matter in your statement
then. If we turn to the European Journal of Cancer
Prevention. At the bottom of the page, it says:
"This is a review of scientific evidence on diet and cancer
prepared for the Food and Drink Federation". Who are the
Food and Drink Federation?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where are you looking?

MS. STEEL: On the first page of the Review. It is not the
introductory front cover or whatever it is.

MR. MORRIS: It is page 3 of the report.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Do you know, Dr. Arnott?
A. I personally do not know, but it goes on to say that it
is submitted to the COMA Working Group on Diet and Cancer.

Q. Anyway, you are not acquainted with the Food and Drink
Federation?
A. I am afraid I am not, my Lord.

MS. STEEL: The introduction:

"There is a general consensus that diet is an important
