Day 023 - 13 Sep 94 - Page 18

  Q. Presumably, the World Health Organisation does not choose,
you know, cranky, obscure, unpopular and unrepresentative
individuals or bodies; would it be fair to say that they
would try to choose people that are respected from bodies
       that are established and recognised?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We can see them on page 6, can we not?

MR. MORRIS: Oh, good. I did not know there was that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is the third sheet of the copy you have
       given us from the front.

MR. MORRIS: One question that I do not know, is everybody who
       is mentioned on pages 6 and 7 part of that working party;
       is that correct?
       A. It would seem to be the case.

  Q. Having a quick look at that, would you say that they are
       fairly representative?
       A. Well, I mean, there are many of them I have never even
       heard of.

  Q. What about the Organisations that were represented such as
the Council for International Organisations of Medical
Sciences, Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United
Nations, International Council of Nurses, International
       Dental Federation, International Diabetes Federation,
       International Life Sciences Institute?
       A. Well, if you look at the International Council of
Nurses, for example, that is a sort of administrative body
and, I mean, I do not know how they have chosen their
particular representative from that body to go on this
thing. This, of course, is one of the problems, is that a
lot of the people on this list here may not necessarily be
specialist in the field of diet and cancer -- in fact,
I suspect that most of them probably are not.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let me just ask, and then you come back,
Mr. Morris, can you see a cancer specialist there?
Obviously there may be many cancer specialists you do not
       know around the world?
       A. Well, Dr. Mettlin who is from the UICC is an
       oncologist.

  Q. Where do I see him?
       A. He is on the top right hand.

MR. MORRIS: From the International Union against Cancer?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is that a respected body?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It would be better to ask, is Dr. Mettlin an
       established oncologist, respected oncologist?
       A. Yes, he is a respected oncologist. The UICC is the
organisation which, for example, produces guidelines to
help us to stage cancer. We have manuals which are
produced which are designed to help us to categorise
patients who have similar degrees of advancement of their
