Day 104 - 15 Mar 95 - Page 45
bolts of the operation, this is what caused the
difficulties.

MR. MORRIS: What were the specific things she was keen on?
A. I have said her job and I cannot specify more than that
other than to refer back to her statement. That is the
main source.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you remember anything more?
A. I cannot. I can remember one incident when there was a
meeting on the first day which would have involved spending
some £50,000 on an alteration, which I cannot specify
because I was not given it, but that was the only specific
comment I had about the difficulties. It did not turn out
to be an exact expense because it never would be. That
would be a matter for more senior Ministry officials, but
that is the exact memory I have of the sort of difficulties
that were being caused.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will pause there. Can you remember
anything more about what you were told about Ms. Hovi?
A. No, I cannot, my Lord.

Q. If your memory is jogged in the future you may, but that is
it for the moment?
A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will adjourn now and we will resume at
half past 2 with Dr. Pattison. There is absolutely no
reason for Mr. Bennett to stay. We hope to come to back to
you at 10.30 tomorrow morning, Mr. Bennett.

(Luncheon Adjournment)

Dr. Pattison, Recalled.
Cross-Examined by the Defendants, continued.

MS. STEEL: If you could get yellow volume IX, please? Could
you turn to your statement? It should be at tab 5. If you
turn to page 50 on the first appendix, this document, when
was this created?
A. I wrote this about four or five years ago I would
guess. It is not dated but it was about four years ago.

Q. So 1991?
A. Something like that, yes.

Q. It says here: "Fresh new wood". At No. 4: "Fresh new wood
shavings are used as environment/index.html">litter for each new batch of chicks."
That was the standard practice at the time, was it?
A. Yes, it was and it was before paper environment/index.html">litter was
generally available to us, so that was the standard
practice.

Q. When did that changeover occur?
A. We have had paper available to us probably since three
or four years ago I should think.

Q. Is it in use at all the Sun Valley farms now?
A. No. We use it on some sites but we still use wood
