Day 098 - 07 Mar 95 - Page 44

       happens, yes.

  Q. But it would happen on every load, not with every cow
       but -----
       A. Oh .....

MR. JUSTICE BELL: This is not anywhere near the race into the
       slaughter?
       A. No.

  Q. This is just coming, as I understand it, off the lorry and,
as far as the animal is concerned, it could be absolutely
       anywhere?
       A. Yes, as far as the animal is concerned, yes.

MS. STEEL: I think actually with Dr. Gregory it was anywhere
between coming off the lorry and getting as far as the
stunning pen. (To the witness): Would you accept that?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, but this is unloading from a vehicle.
That is what the whole page is about, is it not?

MS. STEEL: Yes, it is but I am just asking questions about
that. (To the witness): You have a second person there
because if there was only one person it would make it more
likely that the cows could escape?
       A. Or if an accident arose -- I mean, I must admit, I have
not written this document and neither am I a loader or a
driver or anything else, but if an animal caused injury to
somebody by its actions, it would obviously be very
beneficial to that person if somebody else was in
       attendance.

  Q. But the example given here is in case of animals escaping?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So that is a particular concern that the company thought
       fit to mention?
       A. Yes.

  Q. If we turn over to the Animal Welfare Training on page 194,
again with unloading animals under No. 5, it has: "Try to
ensure that no animal escapes". Again under Moving Animals
or Presenting them for stunning, No. 3: "Try ensure that
no animal escapes". So, this is something that occurs at
every stage of the process from unloading to slaughter?
       A. It is something that precautions are taken against at
every stage in the process. It is not necessarily
       something that happens.

  Q. No, but that they may try to escape is something that
occurs at every stage of the process? I mean, sure, if you
have lots of fences up they are not going to get very far,
but them trying to escape is something that happens at all
       the stages of the process?
       A. I have yet to see an animal making a bid to escape in
any of these situations myself. I mean, I am not involved
directly in the loading and unloading of livestock or
driving them or anything else but -----
