Day 003 - 30 Jun 94 - Page 30
1 Lyn Pak?
A. Probably 19 -- it must be 1990, in there somewhere.
2
Q. I just wondered -- there will not be any dispute about the
3 date -- if you could remember for the sake of the
continuity of your evidence. What state has it got to at
4 the moment?
A. It is moving too slow.
5
Q. To slow?
6 A. Yes. The technology is not keeping pace with our
desires. It will get there, but it will take a little
7 more time.
8 Q. Reduction you have told us about. Does that apply equally
to paper and polystyrene?
9 A. Oh yes. We try to recycle everything we can from the
offices from the standpoint of just administration,
10 invoices which used to pass documents from Golden West
Foods to the restaurants, back to the office for stamping
11 and paying. We do all that electronically now over the
wires. We eliminate all that paper.
12
Q. I do not expect you to give us the precise figures.
13 Mr. Oakley will do this in due course. What about
recycled paper, roughly speaking what is the process on
14 that front?
A. We use recycled paper in as many areas as we can: the
15 tray mats on plastic trays in the stores at the front
counter; we use recycled toilet paper; we use
16 post-manufactured recyclced material in our serviettes,
our napkins, and we will use more of it as we are able.
17
Q. What about reuse, that was the third principle?
18 A. I almost forget that one. Many of the outer cardboard
boxes that our materials come in make excellent packaging
19 that can be used by other companies corrugated
packaging,. Rather than them having to go out and
20 manufacture new packaging for products to be shipped
onward, we retain in most of our restaurants where we have
21 the room to store them safely french fry boxes, chip
boxes, the outer cases. Those get sold on to a company
22 that uses them for packaging I think automotive parts in
one sense. So something which heretofore got one use now
23 gets many uses.
24 Q. There are two other things under this heading I want to
ask you about. First of all, may we assume that
25 McDonald's uses in this country quite a lot of paper
annually?
26 A. We use paper. In terms of annually, I mean in -----
27 Q. I am not asking for a figure.
A. In terms of the total of the country, I do not even
28 think we register.
29 Q. No, I meant McDonald's in this country?
A. We use a small amount, yes.
30
Q. It is suggested by the defendants that McDonald's in this
