Day 137 - 19 Jun 95 - Page 29

  Q. I should ask this: Have you ever read the leaflet which is
the subject of this libel action?
       A. Yes, I have.

  Q. What the Defendants are pleased to call the London
Greenpeace Fact Sheet -- you have read it?
       A. Yes, I have.

  Q. How recently have you looked at the section on employment?
       A. About two days ago.

  Q. Right. Do you remember that it says that the chances of
promotion in McDonald's are minimal. Do you remember it
       saying that?
       A. Yes, I do.

  Q. Would you like to comment on that?
       A. It is totally untrue.

  Q. By comparison with other people in the same sort of field
of activity, human activity, as McDonald's, is it untrue?
       A. I am not sure I follow that question.

  Q. Are you better or worse at promoting your hourly paid
people than, for example, Burger King or Kentucky Fried
       Chicken?
       A. There is no question, from everything that I have
experienced and observed, that we do a far better job at
       that.

  Q. In this country we learn that something over 50 per cent of
salaried people have come from crew, does that figure
       surprise you?
       A. No, I would anticipate that kind of a figure.

  Q. Mr. Stein, rates of pay?
       A. Yes.

  Q. You will have noticed that the leaflet says that rates of
       pay at McDonald's are low?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I am not asking for a comment about that. The first
question I have is this: Is there a legal minimum wage in
       the United States?
       A. Yes, there is.

  Q. Is that imposed by State Governments or by the Federal
       Government or by both?
       A. Minimum wages are both. There is a Federal minimum
wage and then the states have a right to set minimum wages
above the Federal minimum as well. I think a small number
       of states have done that.

  Q. Mr. Stein, in that volume yellow X you have there, there is
       a statement?
       A. I have white X -- sorry, it is yellow at the top.

  Q. These wondrous lights distort the colour of everything.
