Day 180 - 31 Oct 95 - Page 44

       A. That is right, below the quartile. Really, it is only
the Inner London premium paid McDonald's workers that are
above the lower quartile, that is, £3.55 Inner London with
       its higher labour market pressures.

MR. MORRIS: If you look on page 11, the Inner London lower
quartile rates for general sales assistant at the top of
page 11 is £3.71; McDonald's rate, comparative rate, is
£3.30. So it does not even reach the -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That why I said a moment ago that the -----

MR. MORRIS: It is below in all -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It puts the Inner London McDonald's on the
bottom quartile, that is, 3.30, and it puts all the others
in the bottom quartile which is below the bottom quarter,
       the lower quartile.

MR. MORRIS: With respect, on page 11, the rates for McDonald's
workers is below what the equivalent industry ------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, but one could get a thousand figures out
of that. I am still on -----

MR. MORRIS: It is below the lower quartile.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, I am still on page 8 which is all areas.
The only point I am making, just to make sure I follow
Mr. Pearson's evidence, is that the Inner London person --
page 12, 3.30 -- is right on the lower quartile for general
sales assistant all areas, and the others, that is, Outer
London and provincial are in the bottom quarter ---
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- in fact, the 2.65 is below when you are taking averages?
       A. Yes, and I know very well -----

  Q. Then from that one can go to as many of the other boxes as
one wants and draw one's own conclusion. We do not
necessarily have to rehearse it in evidence. I just want
to make sure I have understood it correctly.
       A. By comparison with the national picture, yes, you
have. I think all that was being put to you was if you
compare the Inner London with Inner London, you may get a
slightly even less favourable, but I am sure you have
       gathered that.

  Q. I have grasped that.

MR. MORRIS: Of course, all the other firms, do they pay Inner
London weighting and things like that?
       A. I could not answer for all the other firms but, in
general terms, market rates will be higher.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It looks from page 11 as if they do ---
       A. Does it?

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.
