Day 246 - 09 May 96 - Page 32

       what you believed.

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: And I will just have to weigh it all up then.

MS. STEEL: I am just checking something which obviously I do
know the answer to, but of course you did not send copies
of any such apologies to myself, or Mr. Morris, or any of
       the other 3 Defendants prior to the service of the writs;
       did you?
       A. I do not know.

  Q. Not that I would have believed it anyway.
       A. No.

  Q. Seeing as there is all the evidence to the contrary. ...
You have also used the apology by Channel 4 over the Jungle
Burger film as part of your strategy to persuade other
people they have got it wrong and they ought to apologise
       as well; have not you?
       A. I believe we have used Jungle Burger and that issue on
       several occasions, yes.

  Q. The makers of Jungle Burger in Germany have never been
taken to court there; have they?
       A. I do not know.

  Q. You have also used the letter from Prince Philip and you
have used the name of Norman Myers in your attempts to,
I think, persuade the BBC to apologise, and certainly in
your attempts to persuade people like The Vegetarian
       Society et cetera to apologise over the rainforest issue;
       have you not?
       A. We may very well have. I think so, but I cannot recall
       here and now.

  Q. The fact is that Norman Myers has never actually vindicated
       you, has he?
       A. I do not know whether he has or not to me personally,
but I know that we do not do what he said we did.

  Q. But you used his name to persuade other people to apologise
when he had not cleared you?
       A. I do not know that is true.

  Q. And you then expect us to believe those other people who
       have been hoodwinked into apologising?
       A. No one has been hoodwinked into anything. They had the
opportunity to check and verify everything I told them. I
would think institutions as reputable as the ones
I mentioned did just that and found what I said to be
true. I did not expect them to just take my word for it.

  Q. The Transnational case, you mentioned The Guardian. That
was with the Transnational at the same time; do you
       remember that?
       A. Yes, I do.

  Q. It was about the pamphlet "Working for Big Mac"?
