Day 084 - 07 Feb 95 - Page 47

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just on your experience, it may at the end of
the day not matter because a cut finger may not be here or
there, but however that may be, in your experience can you
give any estimate of how many entries in the blue book
there would be for each RIDDOR report?
A. What I could give you is when I was in restaurant
operations and what my experience was when I checked a blue
book. I could not relate these to RIDDOR in any way.

Q. Just to get some kind of fell for it.
A. It is probably eight per month minor incidents that
went in the blue book.

MR. MORRIS: Eight a month, so something like 100 a year,
something like that?
A. That is from my experience in the restaurants when
I went and checked through that someone cut a finger,
stubbed a toe, whatever.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Whereas the RIDDOR accidents come out at
something just under one a year per restaurant?
A. I think that is the figure that can be extrapolated
from that.

MR. MORRIS: Presumably, there are more incident report forms
filled in than there are RIDDOR accidents in terms of
employees?
A. If an incident report form referred to a cut or
something, sorry -- no. Ask the question again, please.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Anything which goes on a company incident
report form, I have assumed, tell me if I am wrong, has
gone in the blue book anyway?
A. Yes.

Q. It is just a question of whether in addition to that it
merits a report to head office.

MR. MORRIS: The incident report forms are always sent to head
office, are they?
A. They are always sent to the customer services
department in head office in East Finchley.

Q. If we can say, rule of thumb, we have one RIDDOR accident
per year per store and 100 blue book entries per year per
store. Would you know roughly what the kind of figure
would be for incident report forms for employee accidents
filled out per year per store?
A. This is getting uncomfortably hypothetical for me to
estimate that.

Q. Is it somewhere in between?
A. It would have to be somewhere in between that. I think
that Jill Barnes will be in a much better position to give
you more details on that. She handles these statistics on
a regular basis, similar statistics.

Q. I would like to make a formal request for the incident
report forms on employee accident statistics in the
