Day 248 - 13 May 96 - Page 28

       A. I do not remember what the event was.

  Q. Have you still got 'the words complained of' bundle there?
It is not that big one, I think it is the smaller one.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is on the table on the right,
       Mr. Preston.
       A. I have it.

MS. STEEL: If you look at the 5th page.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which divider are you at?

MS. STEEL: Sorry, in tab 11. If you look at the article which
appears in the Daily Mail, which is the one underneath the
fairly big photograph of her: "McDonald's in legal bid to
gag rocker Chrissie". And it says "Rock star Chrissie
Hynde faces legal action over a public outburst against the
McDonald's hamburger chain. The fast-food chain said
yesterday that it would seek an injunction against the
Pretenders singer unless she publicly agreed by 4.00 p.m.
on Monday never to repeat her verbal attack on the
company. McDonald's also warned that details of Hinds'
tirade against the firm at the London launch of an LP for
the environmental group Greenpeace earlier this week were
in the hands of police." Is that correct what is written
       there?
       A. I think we told her, "You agree by 4 o'clock not to say
what you said again about the Company", yes.

  Q. Right. It was at a Greenpeace international event that she
       made this comment?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: But what are you suggesting they asked her to
do? Because I am understanding Mr. Preston to be saying
not to urge people to petrol-bomb McDonald's. Not anything
else she may have said about them. I mean, that same
article has a paragraph, "In a statement company said
lawyers had advised that her remarks constitute a criminal
offence". I do not even know if the article is accurate,
but if it were I could see that might apply to urging
people to fire-bomb, but not to any other criticism of
       McDonald's.

MS. STEEL: If you turn over... I think it is 3 pages to an
       article "Big Mac Fire-bombed".

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: The last column, it says under "McDonald's
purported to be prosecuted": "Last night Chrissie said
'I did not regret any aggressive action against McDonald's
or anyone else'. When asked what concessions..." I think
it is suppose to be 'contributions'... "I have made to
protect the environment I jokingly replied that I had
       fire-bombed McDonald's. Everyone present laughed." I am
trying to find the article said what the event was.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where are we going on this; what is the point
       of it?
