Day 161 - 24 Jul 95 - Page 11

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That means more than four days since it came
       in, does it?
       A. That is correct, sir.

MR. RAMPTON: What was the general policy for food which, for
one reason or another, needed to be discarded in the
restaurant? Was there any instruction or training about
that while you were the Manager?
       A. Yes. If it is unfit to be sold, not good quality would
be thrown away at any stage.

  Q. Suppose the person who was putting the buns together, or
whatever, came upon a patty that was broken or crumbled,
what would they have to do?
       A. It would be thrown away.

  Q. Thrown away?
       A. Thrown away.

  Q. Did you get complaints from customers from time to time at
       the Strand?
       A. Yes, we do.

  Q. What sort of things?
       A. If the service is slightly slow, we will get a customer
complaint. If the fries are slightly cold, we will get
       complaints.

  Q. Did you ever remember having a complaint about a crumbled
       or broken hamburger?
       A. I did not.

  Q. Miss Tobin says that the buns often got stuck in the
toaster and that people tried to fish them out with their
fingers, I think it is, and so often got burned. Do you
       have a comment about that?
       A. Yes. Everything has got training, and there is a
spatula to remove those buns. I do not know how anyone can
put fingers on the toaster. There is a purposely made
spatula to pick up all those buns; and I have not seen
       anyone doing it.

MISS STEEL: Can you just hold on, please?

MR. RAMPTON: Next, Miss Anteneh, Miss Tobin alleges that staff
were abused if they discarded unfit food; and she goes on
to say that at the Strand (I take this to be) the abuse of
staff was constant. What place do you think abuse has in
the management of a McDonald's restaurant?
       A. It is not tolerated. Abuse at any level to anyone is
not tolerated by anyone within the restaurant. It is
really insulting and beyond my belief that she made that
       statement.

  Q. I suppose, from time to time, you will have a disagreement,
perhaps even an argument, with a member of the crew; yes?
       A. Sure, we do.

  Q. What is your way of dealing with that kind of incident?
