Day 009 - 08 Jul 94 - Page 13
1 board packaging they provided to McDonald's.
2 Q. Is that usually 50-50 or 70-30?
A. No. You cannot generalise. There is no
3 generalisation there. I can tell you what it is at today;
I cannot tell you what it was back then.
4
Q. There was some document you read out yesterday which
5 talked about a massive expansion to 500 million Happy
Meals?
6 A. That was not referring to the Happy Meal programme
itself. That was referring to our expanded use of
7 recycled content in Happy Meal packaging; Happy Meal
packaging began before that time.
8
There is one other item we have used historically to
9 complete my answer; that would be the use of recycled
content in tissue products, toilet tissue, hand towels
10 that the crew personnel would use. That is a relatively
minor part of our business; but just to complete the post
11 scenario.
12 Q. That would be 100 per cent recycled?
A. Again it would be a combination, an evolving issue
13 over time.
14 Q. Would it be 100 per cent recycled partly post-consumer,
partly preconsumer?
15 A. It depends on the supplier.
.
16 Q. It could be 50 per cent recycled or ---?
A. It could be any combination. Historically we would
17 have to check to give you the exact numbers.
18 Q. When did you start identifying in your publicity the
actual percentages of recycled content in specific items?
19 A. Could you ask that question again?
20 MR. JUSTICE BELL: You mean the percentage as opposed to
identifying that some of it was recycled?
21
MR. MORRIS: For example, if something is made from recycled
22 paper, does that mean it is 100 per cent recycled paper or
does it mean it has some recycled paper in it?
23 A. That is an excellent question. Let me take about two
minutes to tell you because this is a very complicated
24 issue.
25 In the United States the issue of post-consumer versus
preconsumer was a significant issue in my field, in the
26 solid waste field, during 1990 or so. What happened was
that there were many companies in the United States making
27 claims of using recycled paper, and that would be a
combination of either preconsumer or post-consumer. What
28 happened was people in government, state attorneys for
different states, different environmental advocates,
29 different people in the industry, all debated this issue.
What was trying to be found out is what would be the
30 appropriate way to refer to recycled paper when
communicating to the public.
