Day 060 - 02 Dec 94 - Page 29

       were you?
       A. I object to "not bothered". I think I have
demonstrated that I am responsible when I know the facts.
I did not know the facts at that time, and nor did many
other people, the majority of other people, as it relates
       to polystyrene packaging.

  Q. You only decided to stop using CFCs when you came under
       pressure from environmental campaigners?
       A. Absolutely wrong.

  Q. That is wrong?
       A. I decided because I thought it was the right thing to
do. I do not know how many times I have to tell you that,
but that is when I decided. Nobody pressured me into doing
this. I had to pressure others into doing it.

  Q. The company had not been under any pressure then
       whatsoever?
       A. I had not been under pressure. You directed that
       question to me.

  Q. What about the company? The company had been under
       pressure, had it not?
       A. The company in the US probably had at that time.

  Q. What about in the UK?
       A. Not to my knowledge. I certainly had had no pressure
and, had there been pressure against the company, I think
I would have had the pressure being the person responsible.

  Q. You would have been aware of it if there had been pressure?
       A. I would have got the pressure and I did not. This was
       done in good faith.

  Q. If you could keep that open and turn it to the fifth page?
       A. Fifth page of what?

  Q. Sorry, of 46, the one you were in a minute ago?
       A. Yes.

  Q. There is an article here, "Big Mac box, a threat to
ozone". It appeared in the Sunday Times in this country on
8th March 1987. It says: "The humble carton used to
package the Big Mac beefburger is about to attract the
wrath of environmentalists who want it put on the list of
       threats to the" -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where are you reading from now?
       A. "Big Mac box, a threat to ozone" -- mine is unreadable.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have not even found it at the moment.
       A. Page 102.

MS. STEEL: "List of threats to the universe", I think it says.
I have some slightly better copies.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is in tab 46, is it?

MS. STEEL: Yes, it is the fifth page, and it is the press
