Day 269 - 25 Jun 96 - Page 66

MS. STEEL: It just says "population average".

MR. RAMPTON: No, that is the recommendation as we have seen
repeatedly throughout the report. Is it not, Professor
Crawford? If you want to look again at paragraph 3.4.18 in
relation to heart disease on page 49 it says:

"Saturated fatty acids should provide an average for the
population of 10 per cent of the total dietary energy."

If the 20 year old and, I take it, we can regard him as an
       adult?
       A. Yes.

  Q. If the 20 year old has an energy requirement for each day
of 2,550 calories, 10 per cent of that is 255 calories?
       A. Yes.

  Q. To convert that into grammes we divide it by 9?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. Which means that, according to this report at least, he is
allowed, if I can put it in those school masterly terms,
over 28 grammes of saturated fatty acids per day; is he
       not?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Please look at your table and look at the two columns under
"beef". Your people calculated the saturated fat content
of the McDonald's meal, which was a hamburger, medium
French fries and medium Coke of 6.32 grammes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Which is less than a quarter of his daily saturated fat
       allowance; is it not?
       A. Yes. The point I think that one makes here is that
the population average of 10 which they have got in this
book, and the recommendations on the international scene
are asking people to keep that in mind as a maximum.
Actually the WHO is making the recommendation of going to
       0. So I think it depends on how you interpret this data.
As I said in my evidence, I do not hold any strong store by
what I did as a calculation. It is only as a very crude
guide to what the contribution of that particular meal
might make. You know, again one could argue on the basis
that there are some people, in fact several people, who
believe that these estimates of calorie requirements are
       rather generous.

  Q. I do not mind in you want to cut it in half?
       A. I do not want to cut it in half.

  Q. Say 5 per cent of 255 calories, calculated in grammes, is
       over 14 grammes a day?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Which is still more than twice the content of the this
       McDonald's meal; is it not?
       A. That is correct and I do not think it changes the
