Day 131 - 06 Jun 95 - Page 77

Q. We have, if you look on the third page of that document, a
number of safety concerns ---
A. Categories, yes.

Q. -- of which three to six are high risk activities: Floor
Maintenance/Prevention of Slips, that is (3); (4) General
Equipment Maintenance; (5) Handling, Lifting and Carrying
and (6) Deliveries?
A. Yes.

Q. Which included that trolley you mentioned from the film?
A. Yes, well, these are categories of things that all need
to be considered.

Q. These are considered high risk activities, yes?
A. (3) to (6)?

Q. (3) to (6)?
A. Yes, these are the ones that cause over 80 per cent of
serious accidents by the definition, yes.

Q. I cannot see anything in there (but tell me if I am wrong)
about burns as a specific area to be concerned about.
A. Well, it does say with General Equipment Maintenance
that the things have to be used properly and so on which is
part of it. It does not cover burns specifically and, as I
say, since that is an outcome rather than a cause, I would
not expect it to.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, but if you say there is a serious
accident you normally mean serious in its result, do you
not?
A. Indeed. I have highlighted the fact that (3) to (6)
are causes of over 80 per cent of serious accidents.

Q. Yes?
A. So, as I have said before, a slip could result in a
burn very easily, for instance.

MR. MORRIS: We did cover this earlier where we agreed that a
substantial number of burns would not come into the
categories as defined in the RIDDOR statistics?
A. Can I ask what sort of entry you would expect on a
check list like that? If you are saying to me that burns
are missing, which I accept, what sort of entry would you
expect on a check list like that, which is a check list of
physical condition?

Q. I would expect the staff to be encouraged ---
A. I am sorry, no.

Q. -- educated?
A. No, that is not the question I have asked.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, just hold on because, in fact, you cannot
ask a question.

THE WITNESS: I apologise. I am sorry.
