Day 064 - 08 Dec 94 - Page 69

  Q. They told you that?
       A. Not me specifically, no.

  Q. Did you see that evidence?
       A. Did I see the evidence? This was more likely that it
would have been word to mouth.

  Q. Word of mouth?
       A. Word of mouth.

  Q. So something that comes to you word of mouth you are quite
happy to put in a national leaflet attacking -- well, as a
national leaflet, you are happy to believe information that
is given to you word of mouth, are you?
       A. I had no reason to disbelieve these people. They are
honourable people. If they say there are London Greenpeace
activists outside their restaurant, then I have to believe
       that was true.

  Q. Yes, but this is last year. If we look at the next point:
"During that period the group as has ignored several
requests from McDonald's to stop publishing the leaflet".
What information, evidence, were you shown to back that up?
       A. I was not shown evidence. I was certainly told that
       this was the case.

  Q. Told by whom?
       A. Executives of the UK company.

  Q. Who told them?
       A. I do not know.

  Q. Did you check that fact before you approved it?
       A. I believe the executives who told me.

  Q. You were not shown the copies of these letters or requests
from McDonald's sent to London Greenpeace?
       A. Sorry, what letters?

  Q. Presumably, if London Greenpeace had been written to
several times, or had had several requests to stop
publishing the leaflet, then McDonald's would have a record
       of that, would they not?
       A. If they had written to them, yes.

  Q. Yes, but you were not shown any of those letters?
       A. No, but the executives who told me were very credible
people and I had no reason to disbelieve them.

  Q. Which executives told you that?
       A. Am I permitted to answer that?

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.
       A. Mr. Nicholson would have told me.

MR. MORRIS: Anybody else told you that?
       A. Well, Mr. Preston. Certainly those two.

  Q. Then based on what they told you, you put it in a national
       leaflet?
