thought to concealing any kind of system regarding hours
       worked.

MS. STEEL: Whether or not you are on fortnightly pay you could
quite easily print out weekly, and the fact you do not
print out the weekly hours worked is a deliberate way of
       avoiding ---
       A. No.

  Q. -- finding out how frequently it goes on?
       A. If that is your question my answer is no. That is not
       the reason we do it.

MR. MORRIS: Maybe we will move on to another. The labour
percentages, can you turn to the Management Development
Programme? It is tab 15 in one of the files. I am not
sure which one it is in.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, it is pink XII.

MR. MORRIS: If you can turn to tab 15 page 595, you can see
here -- this is how managers are trained, is it? This is
       the training guide for managers?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So this is compulsory training for every manager in the
McDonald's system in the UK, is that correct?
       A. Well this particular one is compulsory training for
       first assistants.

  Q. For first assistants, I am sorry.
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is that because they do scheduling of hours?
       A. I would have thought so.

  Q. If we turn over to page 596, paragraph "Pay for
       performance"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. "If you are paying someone £5 an hour are you getting £5
worth of work or service from that individual? Are you
getting more or less. An individual's rate of pay should
reflect their dependability, versatility, experience and
ability". You have said -- you have said or Paul Preston
has said -- that people at McDonald's work very hard. Is
that correct? Do you believe that, that people at
       McDonald's work very hard?
       A. Yes, I think so.

  Q. The crew?
       A. Everyone.

  Q. But the crew only get around about the minimum wage, plus a
       few bits and pieces?
       A. No. No the crew in the provinces start round about
       the minimum wage.

  Q. We have heard a lot of evidence on that. Whatever they
get, the fact is you are not paid at McDonald's are you,
