Day 093 - 28 Feb 95 - Page 60

       A. I did not say "mainly hot".

  Q. Or dry.

MR. RAMPTON: I do not know what Mr. Morris' question meant.
Did he mean McDonald's uses beef from Canada in the United
States or did he mean simply that the populous in the
United States can eat Canadian beef? It is quite
       important.

MR. MORRIS: The Canadian beef that comes into the United States
       gets ----

MR. RAMPTON: No, I maintain my objection.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know whether McDonald's uses Canadian
       beef?
       A. We do not use any imported beef at all.

MR. MORRIS: That would not be imported, would it, if it was
       from Canada?
       A. They are two different countries. Bringing beef from
Canada into the US is imported beef. If you do not know
that I do not know what country you live in.

  Q. I live in the United Kingdom. So beef is coming regularly
into the United States from Canada. When it comes in does
it come in as live cattle or does it come in as ----
       A. Live cattle.

  Q. It comes in as live and other forms?
       A. I do not know about the other forms.

  Q. So it comes in as live. Does it go to feed lots?
       A. I do not know where it goes. It could go to feed
lots. It could go to ----

  Q. Abattoirs.
       A. Abattoirs, yes.

  Q. Then once it arrives it is -- basically, once it has been
checked for health certification it is then re-categorised
       as US beef?
       A. No, that is incorrect.

  Q. So Canada is the only country in the world that the United
States accepts beef from but does not relabel it "US
       beef"?
       A. When it comes into the US the live cattle, they get
branded. I do not know which letter they use for Canada
but when it comes for instance from Mexico it gets branded
with an M. That is how the animals are identified in the
United States. The Department of Agriculture is
responsible. If you label it, and we went through it quite
extensively last time, if you label that you only use
domestic beef, then the US DA is responsible for making
sure that that happens. Now we spent hours last time
       discussing this issue.

  Q. So live cattle also are shipped in Mexico as well?
