Day 259 - 10 Jun 96 - Page 49

  Q. That was the words he said to you, was it?
       A. Absolutely.

  Q. It is not quite possible that he said something to you
which you could have misunderstood and interpreted as
       meaning he was happy?
       A. He was either happy or he was unhappy, and he was never
unhappy. He was very happy with the way the department was
       run.

  Q. That was your opinion?
       A. No. It was his opinion, as given to me.

MS. STEEL: Personally, I think this whole thing is something of
a farce, because it is quite clear that the only purpose of
the Plaintiffs' calling this witness is to bring in
somebody else's opinion, because there is no other reason
       for it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just put your challenges, let the witness
leave the witness box, and give me your comment when you
make your submissions on the matter of employment in due
course. You know what the procedure is. You have had
       two years' experience of cross-examination.

MS. STEEL: In our experience, our hearsay evidence has not
       been allowed.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Please just put your challenges to the
witness, and I will ask her to leave the witness box and
you can make your comments later.

MS. STEEL: Except where it has been given as the reason for
somebody doing something as a consequence of what was said.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Please follow the proper procedure.

MR. MORRIS: (To the witness) When Mr. Mills came to your
offices, he was dealing with salaries and he was dealing
       with crew; yes?
       A. He could have been dealing with either on the day that
he came, depending on which -----

  Q. Sometimes he dealt with some matters and sometimes he dealt
       with other matters?
       A. That is right.

  Q. He did not deal with all matters all the time?
       A. No, he could not; there was not enough hours in the
day, probably. He chose -- if he had an inquiry to follow,
he followed it, whether it was crew or management,
depending on him, not on me.

  Q. Right. Do you remember the dates of his last visits?
       A. No, I certainly do not, no.

  Q. Do you remember if he visited in 1986 and 1987?
       A. I was on maternity leave in 1986, so I cannot speak for
then. But he visited twice a year during the time that
       I was there.
