Day 008 - 07 Jul 94 - Page 43
1 still being used?
A. The direction of the company worldwide was to find
2 alternatives to HCFC-22, to find solutions that would have
no ozone depletion effect at all, and Perseco worldwide
3 headed up that effort to find those solutions and
implement them worldwide for McDonald's.
4
Q. Aside from the fact that, to an extent, both in the
5 Phillipines and in Turkey there is still a use of HCFC-22,
are you satisfied with the application of those concerns
6 in practice since that time?
A. I am very pleased with our progress we have made, yes.
7
Q. Are you conscious of the phase-out periods for HCFC-22
8 laid down by the Montreal Convention? Do you know what
they are?
9 A. Only in very general terms.
10 Q. May I ask you this question: Has the rate of phase out in
the McDonald's organisation for HCFC-22 exceeded or lagged
11 behind?
A. It has far exceeded it. I do believe that the HCFC-22
12 phase-out date is -- it is different in different
countries. To my knowledge, United States it is in the
13 year 2010.
14 Q. 2010?
A. Right.
15
Q. You have not used them since 1990?
16 A. Right. That is my knowledge. No, it could be from
2000 but I do believe it is 2010.
17
Q. What volume have you got there now, Mr. Langert?
18 A. Volume V.
19 Q. Could you put volume IV there as well. Have you still got
open the EDF executive summary?
20 A. Yes, indeed.
21 Q. We are going to go back to volume V in a minute, so I do
not want you to put it away. I stopped at the sentence on
22 page 140 which finished: "Packaging its sandwich items".
Yes? It goes on: "The wraps provide a 70 to 90 per cent
23 reduction in package volume resulting in significantly
less space consumed in landfills". Had you done research
24 calculations and analysis to arrive at that conclusion?
A. Yes, we did -- well, we had it done by an outside
25 firm.
26 Q. I am sorry, yes. "Compared to the polystyrene foam boxes
they replaced, the new sandwich wraps also offer a
27 substantial saving in energy used and substantial
reduction in pollutant releases measured over a full life
28 cycle of the package", according to Franklin Associates,
an independent consulting firm.
29
Pausing there, Mr. Langert, can you turn back -- this is
30 just for identification -- a tab in the bundle to page
118?
