Day 015 - 21 Jul 94 - Page 59
1 Employees are people.
2 MR. JUSTICE BELL: It makes a difference to me because I want
to understand what point I have to get hold of.
3
MS. STEEL: It is a general question about whether people
4 would be ill-advised to eat McDonald's food every day,
whether or not they are an employee or just a customer.
5
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where I have been taking off course was by
6 you starting "If it was shown that". Just put it in a
general way. I want to know in advance whether it might
7 be shown that, do you see?
8 MS. STEEL: Right. In the UK would people be ill-advised to
eat a McDonald's meal every day?
9 A. It depends on what they choose to eat at McDonald's.
10 Q. Right. If it was a standard McDonald's meal, fries,
burger and a drink, would they be ill-advised to eat that
11 every day?
A. As I have already said, it would probably -- well, it
12 would make it more difficult for them to meet the dietary
guidelines than if they had foods much lower in fat.
13
Q. So it would not be a wise move?
14 A. I think at the end of the day it is up to the
individuals what they do. I mean quite frankly, I would
15 find it terribly boring.
16 Q. As a nutritionist would you advise against it?
A. Advise who?
17
Q. Advise those people?
18 A. I would certainly be prepared to spell out what the
implication of it was to them, yes.
19
Q. What are the implications?
20 A. I would sit down with them. I would do the kind of
calculations we have done here on a daily basis which
21 again we have agreed is hypothetical. I would explain
that, OK, if you insist on having your cheeseburger, your
22 fries and all the rest of it every day, and we calculate
up what it is, then you have only so much left in order to
23 meet the requirements; or if you are not going to exceed
the amount of fat, saturated fat and salt. We would also
24 need to look at the intake of the various vitamins and
minerals. But, again, I cannot see there is any
25 disagreement between us on this, because quite honestly as
a general rule people should go for variety and balance.
26 That is emphasised in the literature that comes out from
McDonald's. If you are going for 50 per cent of your
27 calories to McDonald's every day, then you are not going
to achieve variety quite frankly.
28
Q. As a nutritionist if you sat down with somebody who was
29 eating a McDonald's meal every day and went through with
them the nutritional information, would it be right that
30 you would need to say to them something along the lines
of: Unless you are very careful balancing the rest of your
