Day 133 - 12 Jun 95 - Page 37

       A. Yes.

  Q. With a variety of -- I will not read them out -- different
       kind of retail outlets listed?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Presumably, again the people who did this have found out
       which those companies pay?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is that right?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I think Mr. Nicholson told us about this. Then on two
pages on, you find a series of tables actually all the way
through to the last page, but one can deal with it just by
looking at one particular page, perhaps, which is this
table 1.1 and then at the bottom of the page one sees
       McDonald's Basic Rates.

It gives a minimum in table 1.1, the lower quartile, then
the medium and then the upper quartile. If one looks at
the medium, which of those three categories of staff,
general sales assistants, sales person and other staff, do
you think is the right -- if there is one -- person to
compare with an ordinary McDonald's crew member?
       A. I am sorry, which one of those categories would we
       benchmark against?

  Q. Yes, which is the benchmark? General sales assistants,
sales person or other staff -- not that it makes much
difference if one looks at the -----
       A. Yes, that is right, probably general sales assistant.

  Q. General sales assistant?
       A. Yes, in most cases with a crew position. I mean,
obviously, the term "general sales assistant" in other
companies could cover different types of jobs. So, that is
probably the best broad category of description.

  Q. One can see that, whichever one of those benchmarks one
chooses, in the medium column, so far as McDonald's
starting rates are concerned, which one sees at the bottom
of the page, the benchmark exceeds all but the evening and
premium rate in Inner London, do you see that for
       McDonald's?
       A. Yes, but could you just direct me to which figure you
       are looking at?

  Q. At the bottom of the page you will find McDonald's Basic
Rates which you have told us are starting rates?
       A. Yes.

  Q. The highest of which is £3.55 for the evening premium rate
       in Inner London?
       A. Yes.

  Q. It is only that rate which exceeds the mediums given in
       table 1.1?
       A. Yes.
