Day 059 - 01 Dec 94 - Page 59

  Q. So did you not actually recycle any of it?
       A. We were not able to. There was no infrastructure but
it did set us to encourage Lin Pac to establish their
       plant.

  Q. Four years later?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What I was getting at when I was asking you about paragraph
7, is the first reason you have given in paragraph 8 about
why paragraph 7 is untrue is because you say you first
started considering the use of recycled materials in 1988,
and I did ask you about whether you were aware of the
difference between a recycling programme and ----
       A. You did.

  Q. --- using recycled materials and you said you were aware of
       the difference?
       A. Yes.

  Q. They are two separate things, are they not?
       A. Yes, they are.

  Q. So far as recycling anything that came out of your stores,
nothing happened until this plant was set up in Cheshire?
       A. Well, I think what I have said here, if we read the
text of what I have actually said, that McDonald's took its
first step towards developing a waste minimisation and
recycling programme, the first step being the recycling we
asked our customers to do in the restaurants. I do not
actually say "we were recycling". I have said we have
taken our first step towards developing a recycling
programme, which is true and this happened in 1988.

  Q. Well, the customers were not recycling, were they? They
were just sorting out things into different bins?
       A. I think we are getting hung up on semantics. I have
said we took our first step, and I think we did take our
       first step at that time.

  Q. But you would recognise that you were not actually
recycling anything produced in your stores until 1992?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Right, OK.
       A. Yes, I still stand by the statement, we took the first
       step.

  Q. OK. You stand by what you say there in paragraph 8 that
you first started considering the use of recycled materials
       in 1988?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Lower down in paragraph 8 you mention about the task force,
the environmental task force developing and publishing
corporate environmental policy. When did that happen?
       A. I am not sure. I was not directly involved with this
task force at all. Although it says "The makeup included
purchasing", that would not have been me specifically.
