3 MR. RAMPTON: What do you remember of Mr. Sutcliffe? Have you
4 read his statement?
5 A. Yes, I have.

7 Q. He tells, I think, that he worked at your East Ham store
8 for over 12 months, he says, from December 1986, so that is
9 quite a long time?
10 A. Yes.

12 Q. What do you remember of him as a member of your workforce?
13 A. How can I put it? He was always talking about unions
14 and trade unions and things like that when he was a crew
15 member. He was, I remember he used to regularly, sort of,
16 put away deliveries and stuff like that.

18 Q. You were at that time, I think, at any rate for some of
19 that time, a Second Assistant Manager?
20 A. Yes, I would have been about Floor Manager, Second
21 Assistant, somewhere in that stage.

23 Q. Somewhere in that stage. You were full-time by then?
24 A. Yes.

26 Q. So would you have seen the crew members on a regular basis?
27 A. Yes.

29 Q. A daily basis? You said, I think -- I am not quite sure
30 what words you used -- in effect, Mr. Sutcliffe seemed to
31 be rather keen on trade unions; is that right?
32 A. Yes.

34 Q. So far as you are aware, so far you were conscious at the
35 time, how much sympathy did that kind of attitude in
36 Mr. Sutcliffe attract amongst the other crew members?
37 A. None that I can recollect.

39 Q. Were you ever aware in either your time at Romford or your
40 time at East Ham, until you left at the end of last year,
41 of any significant move by members of the workforce to
42 become unionised?
43 A. No.

45 Q. Was the question of unions ever discussed between you and
46 your immediate superiors?
47 A. No.

49 Q. What is your feeling about the systems and procedures which
50 exist in McDonald's for crew members to make known their
51 grievances, their complaints and their dissatisfaction --
52 does it work?
53 A. Personally, yes, I think it does.

55 Q. If a crew member should make a representation to a Manager
56 or say something at a rap session, in your experience, does
57 that complaint, grievance or criticism get attended to by
58 management or not?
59 A. It does, from my own personal experience it does.
