Day 021 - 29 Jul 94 - Page 52

     1
         Q. Now I would like you to look at something else, please.
2 My Lord, it is the leaflet complained of.

3 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. (Handed).

4 MR. RAMPTON: I do not know if you have seen that before, have
              you?
     5 A. Yes.

     6 Q. You have?
              A. Yes.
     7
         Q. The question of what the passage that I am going, or the
8 parts of this leaflet, to draw to your attention
ultimately mean is a matter for his Lordship. So I am not
9 going to ask you what your opinion is about that. But
I draw your attention to the following features. First of
10 all, the headings set against the McDonald's Golden Arches
logo. The top of the page?
    11 A. Yes.

12 Q. They run right across the leaflet?
              A. Yes.
    13
         Q. The first two do not concern you, Professor Wheelock, but
14 I do draw your attention to the heading McCancer. Do you
              see it?
    15 A. Yes.

16 Q. Then do you see the words McDisease?
              A. Yes.
    17
         Q. The word McDeadly?
    18 A. Yes.

19 Q. Then will you pass your eye down to the middle of the
page, and do you see a cartoon, a drawing, of a cow in a
20 hamburger? Do you see that?
              A. Yes.
    21
         Q. The cow is saying: "If the slaughterhouse does not get
22 you", the person on the other side of the hamburger is
saying: "the junk food will". Then I think in the middle
23 of that pamphlet there is a column headed: "What is so
unhealthy about McDonald's food?" Do you see that? You
24 have to say "yes" because of the tape recorder.
              A. Yes.
    25
         Q. "McDonald's try to show in their nutrition guide, which is
26 full of impressive looking but really quite irrelevant
facts and figures, that mass-produced hamburgers, chips,
27 colas, milk shakes, etc., are a useful and nutritious part
              of any diet."
    28
Two questions, Professor Wheelock. Are you familiar --
29 I will show you a couple of earlier versions in a
moment -- are you familiar generally speaking with
    30 McDonald's nutritional information?
              A. Yes, I am.
