Day 284 - 22 Oct 96 - Page 46
I have to look at what is actually demonstrated about the
source of McDonald's beef. That is not to say that policy
and labelling is not relevant; but, at the end of the day,
I have to see what evidence there is that McDonald's,
either in Brazil, Costa Rica, Guatemala, or by way of
export to the USA, has had beef off land which was
rainforest or tropical forest at some stage and, if so,
which.

MR. MORRIS: Yes. But if our expert opinion, say, for example,
on US labelling is that it is inevitable that McDonald's
would have been using imported beef, then McDonald's would
say, "We have a policy on that"; therefore, they would
counter our evidence.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I know all that. At the end of the day, one
has to bear in mind that all I am suggesting is that people
can be without policies and behave perfectly well or have
policies and behave perfectly badly. It may be a clue, but
it is not necessarily the answer to a question. 10.30.
