Day 203 - 12 Jan 96 - Page 59

       in that store was deficient?
       A. It would show that the systems in the restaurant are
not very good with relation to management of the safe, and
the restaurant Manager is accountable for those systems.

  Q. That goes, presumably, for knowing anybody else's Husky
entry number personal number, that would show poor
       management?
       A. Yes, I would say in this case it does show, yes. It
       would, yes.

  Q. So if it was to transpire that we could show that in 70
per cent of all the stores in the country that applied,
that would imply that the whole Company was poorly managed,
       would it?
       A. No, it would not imply that at all. It would imply --
if you could demonstrate that, it would imply that we need
to -- sorry, what was the actual implication about again?
       I have lost track.

  Q. If it was basically general practice that other people knew
people other people's personal entry number into the Husky
system, that would be widespread mismanagement which the
Company would have to take responsibility for?
       A. I do not think I am in a position to comment on that.
I do not feel in a position to comment on that. But
I think that there are set procedures -----

  Q. It is a good reason to come here and to have a go at
Ray Coton in the witness box under oath, anything at all
you can dredge up about him to have a go and attack his
credibility; you are happy to stand there and do it night
       and day?
       A. I think I am really commenting on what my opinion was
of the standards in Colchester High Street when I was the
Supervisor. I do not apologise for the fact that I thought
those standards were poor; and that was clear to Ray at the
time and, if it is not clear to Ray now, he is deluded. As
regards that -- my point about Colchester High Street,
Mr. Morris, if I might say, is not any one thing was wrong,
but just that so many things were wrong. I have said in my
statement that I was fire fighting, that it was quite
difficult for me as a new Supervisor to know where to
begin, to be honest, with Ray, and I simply took each thing
as it occurred and did my best with the people in the
restaurant to put the things right. I attended restaurant
Managers meetings, and so on. But there were so many
things wrong in Colchester High Street that it was
something which needed to be dealt with by performance
review rather than discipline the individuals at every step
       of the way.

May I just come back to your statement about the whole of
       the Company being badly managed?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Leave that alone, because we will have to see
if there is any basis for it.
       A. Sorry.

MR. MORRIS: Did you put the document on 18th July which you --
