Day 158 - 19 Jul 95 - Page 30
rain forest", it says:

"Around the Equator there is lush green belt of incredibly
beautiful tropical forest untouched by human development
for 100 million years, supporting about half of all the
Earth's life forms, including some 30,000 plant species,
and producing a major part of the planet's crucial supply
of oxygen."

The "tropical forest" reference there seems to be the same
tropical forest which is referred to in the Hoofprints on
the Forest book. I will come to that in a minute. I think
that the words can be interchangeable; and, in any event,
the tropical forest is identified as the area in question
in the London Greenpeace factsheet.

Now, these 30,000 plant species, if we go to page 4 of
Hoofprints on the Forest, at the bottom of page 4
Hoofprints on the Forest, we find at the bottom of
page 4 ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The main text?

MR. MORRIS: In the main text, opposite a map there. If we look
at the main text at the bottom of page 4, the second to
last line includes the 30,000 species of plants, vascular
(whatever that means) plants; and this book, Hoofprints on
the Forest, has been stamped "Property of London
Greenpeace", and it is my belief that it could have been
used in the production of the London Greenpeace factsheets
although, as I was not involved with that, I do not know.

The tropical forest in the factsheet is clearly the same
tropical forest, which is the area identified as the area
of concern, is the same as the area which Mr. Shane deals
with in his book. I have looked through his book, from
what I could see in the lunchtime. For example, if we look
on page 3 of his book -- well, sorry, if we look on
page XIII in the preface, going right to the front -- have
you got XIII in the preface?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: The first paragraph in the middle of that
paragraph, he talks about "leading to the destruction of
Latin America's tropical forests". He continues using the
words "tropical forest" throughout the preface and the
introduction exclusively. He does not -- he basically
talks about that is the area of concern. For example, the
next paragraph, third line: " The purpose of this study is
to examine the known causes and consequences of cattle
ranching on the tropical forest biomes of Latin America."

Then if we go on to page 3, the bottom of page 3, the
paragraph: "It is known that the tropical forest which
encircles the Earth near the Equator are regions of global
importance because of the vital natural resources which
they contain."

It goes on about those natural resources. Then the first
