Day 115 - 06 Apr 95 - Page 65

As far as the cross-examination goes, it is much more
difficult to say how long cross-examination is going to
take than it is to say how long examination-in-chief is
going to take. Obviously, it depends on the witnesses, how
much they agree, how much they talk at great length.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I appreciate all that, but all you are being
asked to do is give an estimate and it may turn out to be
wrong, but there we are, at least it is some indication.
We do not have a potential schedule beyond 23rd June.

MR. RAMPTON: No, my Lord. Mr. Stein has not got an arrow on
the end of him, as your Lordship will see, simply because
if the Defendants had not finished by the end of that week
he could still be here the week beginning 23rd -- I am not
encouraging that at all, but it has to be recognised as a
       realistic possibility.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: How long do you expect Mr. Nicholson to be
       in-chief?

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I think now probably only a day to a day
       and half.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will put one and a half days. Mr. Beavers
       is cross-examination?

MR. RAMPTON: He is cross-examination only, yes.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Mr. Fairgrieve?

MR. RAMPTON: Cross-examination only. He has no
evidence-in-chief still to give. He is going to produce a
new document, but I am happy for that to be explored in
       cross-examination.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So that is cross-examination only. What
       about Mrs. Barnes?

MR. RAMPTON: Mrs. Barnes, I gave her a day. Again that is a
generous estimate, but I did try to err on the side of
generosity. I do not want people to get alarmed to have to
cross-examine before they expect to do so. I would expect
her cross-examination to begin on 23rd May. Mr. Purslow,
I have put him down, I think, for three quarters of a day.
Again that is on the generous side.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will put one day.

MR. RAMPTON: Yes, my Lord, again I will not complain if the
Defendants do not start until Wednesday 7th. Mrs. Mead,
I have said a morning really for her because she deals with
employment policy and there does not yet seem to be of a
       dispute about that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Half a day for Mrs. Mead. Mr. Stein?

MR. RAMPTON: He starts on the 19th. I hope he comes over the
end of week before. I would not welcome it and I am sure
