Day 062 - 06 Dec 94 - Page 48
came across in some container vessel at some time may not
be of any real significance. I mean, if you have some
reason to believe it went on for a long time and the
contents, the material was such as to affect the overall
use of recycled material, then by all means bat on, but
think about what you are hoping to achieve.

MS. STEEL: I have not really got much more on this particular
line anyway. So, are you aware of that having happened?
A. For the clam shell, foam clam shell, since that was
such a big project to switch over from in Germany which was
planned quite carefully, I would have expected that hardly
happened there at all because the production will have been
slowed down at that time before.

Q. Do you know whether it happened when the USA got rid of
foam?
A. Whether we got any of their foam?

Q. Yes.
A. I would expect to not because they used, I think they
used a different, but again that was before my time, but
I thought they used a different shape of clam shell than we
do here in Europe, in the UK.

Q. When HCFCs were being phased out, some countries stopped
using them earlier than other countries, did they not?
A. Yes, basically some suppliers stopped using them
earlier than some others.

Q. Is it the case that some of those packaging items made with
HCFCs got shipped to other countries that were not phasing
them out so early, the ones that were left over from
countries that were phasing them out?
A. No, because the only country, to my knowledge, that
actually used HCFC -- no, there were two countries that
actually used HCFC, to my knowledge, which are Hungary for
a very brief period of time and Turkey, and Hungary at a
certain time decided to phase out and they just used up
their stock what they had and then no longer -- then it was
no longer used that came from a local supplier. The same
thing happened in Turkey. They just -- they continued
actually to work with the same supplier, but they just used
up the stock of one product and from February onwards went
on to use this new product with the alternative foam --
blowing agent, sorry.

Q. When most of the European countries phased out foam, got
rid of foam, did some of the packaging with HCFCs get
shipped to Asian countries?
A. When HCFCs were phased out of?

Q. Of the foam in most of the countries in Europe?
A. I would not know that one because that all happened
before my time. I would not expect to because I do not
think there was a lot of trade going on between Perseco
Europe or the European suppliers and Asia Pacific.

MR. MORRIS: I just wanted to clarify something about Europe.
Perseco's definition of Europe is your sphere of operation,
