Day 143 - 27 Jun 95 - Page 52
agreement?
A. There were negotiations over several, several years in
Denmark.

Q. And you were there for some of that time?
A. That is correct.

Q. Did you ask the union when you were there what they were
seeking?
A. No, I did not. I did not speak the language. I did
not feel -- the owner/operators were represented by a
lawyer. They were handling the negotiations. It would not
be my place to deal with that.

Q. You did not enquire into the specific conditions of the
employees in terms of ----
A. I would visit some of the stores, but other than having
casual conversations I was not getting involved that
deeply.

Q. Effectively, you were only there because you wanted to make
sure they did not sign any agreements with the unions, is
it not?
A. No, that is untrue.

Q. You were quite happy to state to the court the union's
position, that they wanted to sack, they wanted part-time
workers to be sacked, but you did not bother to check that
out with the union while you were there?
A. The lawyer that the operators had, the operators were
saying that to me, they all said the same thing. My
recollection is they pointed one day to a newspaper article
that went into that, and I think that was a headline or a
story about that, and they were pointing to it and telling
me what it said and all that kind of stuff. My Lord, I know
a lot of this is hearsay ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not go any further, Mr. Stein. Just leave
it there. When I am saying it is hearsay, that is not a
criticism of you because I have asked you to be helpful if
you can.

THE WITNESS: That is what I am trying to do.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: My comment was directed at Mr. Morris,
because he is entitled to see if you can confirm what he is
putting as his case. If you can then say so. If you
cannot say so.

THE WITNESS: Yes, my Lord.

MR. MORRIS: Have you been to Finland?
A. No, I have I have never been to Finland.

Q. Very briefly if we can just go to document 47. It is 147
but 47 in the tab.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is the same bundle. Look at that,
please.
A. Is this the report on McDonald's boycott activity in
