Day 207 - 23 Jan 96 - Page 72

  Q. Starting at 11 in the morning it goes 14, 22, 25, 24, 20,
       25, 20, 18, 16 and 11, that is a Saturday -- sorry, that is
a Friday in August '94; do those figures seem adequate for
       a Friday?
       A. They would.

  Q. Perhaps one ought to look at one day in May '94 -- sorry to
go backwards -- to 561. I have got the right one -- I hope
that I have; this is May 1994. The document is dated the
15th; that means the figures relate to Saturday the 14th
May 1994. Again, look at the figures from, let us say, 12
noon through to four in the afternoon in the middle two
       columns; have you got those, 28, 26, 27, 28, 31?
       A. Yes.

  Q. For a Saturday in May, middle of May, do those figures seem
       adequate or not?
       A. They do.

  Q. Yes. Can I ask you this, for Bath which, as we all know,
is a popular place for tourists to visit, is there a
difference in the busyness of the store as between May and
       August?
       A. There is; there is an increase in volume that would
       occur.

  Q. There is?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Finally, then this -- I can do this, I hope, without
reference to any documents -- provided people will accept
what I say: it was put to you, you remember, by looking at
the schedules one could see that, for example, Jane
Girdlestone had in May 1994 been scheduled for, I think it
       was, seven days on the trot, the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th,
9th and 10th. Do you remember Mr. Morris asking you about
       that?
       A. I do.

  Q. Perhaps you will take it from me that when one looks at the
clock card file, one finds that, in fact, she did not work
those seven days; she did not work on the 4th or the 10th,
which means that she worked five days in a row and not
seven. My question is -- one can do it again and again and
see that the schedules do not always correspond with the
hours actually worked -- from your experience, what are the
sort of reasons why people do not actually work the hours
or the days for which they have been scheduled. I am not
expecting you to comment on that particular example.
       A. The person may, you know, request additional time off,
or they actually may not be in the restaurant or, you know,
due to other circumstances, them being ill or personal
       circumstances.

  Q. Take this as a hypothetical example, because unless you can
remember the particular case, you cannot actually give
evidence about it: is it possible that Jane Girdlestone
had originally said: "Well, I would like to work for those
       seven days on the trot"?
