Day 246 - 09 May 96 - Page 34

MS. STEEL: Whatever it was that they are part of.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The equivalent to "effect on business" or
"action", or whatever, something like that?

MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know the answer to that, Mr. Rampton?

MR. RAMPTON: No, of course not, not off the top of my head, my
Lord, no. If there was anything which indicated beyond the
existing context which is any way tolerably clearer, I
would submit -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What do you say it relates to?

MR. RAMPTON: It relates to response to media inquiries in
relation to this case; it quite clearly does. It is headed
"Brainstorm". It is the brainstorm of 28th February which
is mentioned in earlier documents. It starts with an
asterisk, "Background Briefing: Response to Media
Inquiries" and then I cannot remember what A was, but
plainly, it was either privileged or irrelevant.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: B and C are simply ways of approaching, I suppose
-- I cannot give evidence about it -- but I take it to
mean that they are ways of, as it were, framing the
background briefing response.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I would like you or Mr. Atkinson to have
another look at it and if there is what I will just call a
sub title by goal, communication, objectives, strategy
effect on business, whatever it is, give some
reconsideration of it which is something which ought to be
disclosed on the face of the documents which enables one to
see what B and C are directed at.

MR. RAMPTON: Yes. If there is anything there which gives a
clue to there being something different from what they
appear to be ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: They are not clear to me what they actually
are.

MR. RAMPTON: We will certainly look again. I do not think it
is likely that anything was blanked out which would be
relevant to explain what B and C are, but we will certainly
look, my Lord, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Carry on for the time being.

MS. STEEL: OK.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have not stopped you going through these
documents because you may, for all I know, turn up
something which really is valuable, but remember what we
are concentrating in this area of the case.
