Day 015 - 21 Jul 94 - Page 51
1 Q. One of the more healthy examples that you had put with the
pizza and side salad we were just referring to, number 5
2 on your table 2, even that is outside the limits?
A. Let me just retrieve -- can you remind me which tab?
3
Q. It is page 99A.
4 A. Yes. Again what I have to emphasise is that in table
2 on page 99A, I mean these are meal combinations. There
5 is no evidence to suggest that people who are eating at
McDonald's six times a week or more are actually eating a
6 whole combination of what is comparable to the ones that
are in here.
7
Q. Have you any evidence that they are not?
8 A. I have no evidence that they are, and again you have
to remember that in some cases it may only be having a
9 glass of orange juice.
10 Q. Would you call a glass of orange juice a meal?
A. Again you have to look across the whole range.
11
Q. Would you call a glass of orange juice a meal?
12 A. It might be, yes. It might constitute a snack. It is
a matter of opinion.
13
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, it might be, but I do not know what
14 restrictions McDonald's have, unless they have a
restriction on helping yourself occasionally to a coke or
15 an orange drink. If they interpreted that as a meal you
might have fantastic numbers. You might have people
16 having ten meals a day -----
A. Right.
17
Q. --- as they help themselves to a drink?
18 A. I really do not have any experience in the restaurant
operation to such an extent that I could comment on what
19 the rules are or what the practice actually is.
20 Q. May I just ask, from answers which have been given by
earlier witnesses it appears that if, for instance, one
21 went into McDonald's and bought a straight hamburger, not
a Big Mac or a cheeseburger, that would count, if that is
22 all you bought, as a meal?
A. I would imagine so, yes.
23
Q. That is the terminology they use?
24 A. Yes.
25 MS. STEEL: You were concerned with this survey, were you not?
A. Yes, I was. I suggested it should be done, but I was
26 not involved in the -----
27 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Did you set out the-----
A. --- preparation.
28
Q. Did you suggest the questions?
29 A. I suggested it should be done. No, I did not suggest
the questions.
30
MS. STEEL: Do you think the question, "How many times a week
