Day 005 - 04 Jul 94 - Page 35
1
MR. RAMPTON: Again the date is of course 21st June 1989.
2
MR. MORRIS: Yes, sorry, 21st June 1989?
3 A. I accept at that date, 1989, HCFCs were being used,
but you just asked me to read----
4
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Mr. Morris was putting five countries in the
5 CFC column?
A. I see five, yes.
6
Q. Whether you appreciate it or not there may be a
7 distinction of some importance between CFCs and HCFCs, no
doubt that could be one of the issues?
8 A. There could be.
9 MR. MORRIS: But five countries were still using CFCs in 1989?
A. Five were using CFCs in 1989, yes.
10
Q. 22 I count, or thereabouts, countries were using HCFCs in
11 1989 approximately?
A. I accept there were some in there. You pointed me to
12 another document which said the issue about HCFCs being
re-examined did not take place until a year after June
13 1989. In 1989 it was thought that HCFCs were in fact OK.
14 Q. Yes, whatever the reason, what we are saying is, you
accept that 27 or 28 countries were using CFCs or HCFCs in
15 1989?
A. Yes.
16
Q. I will leave that at that then.
17
If we move on to other elements of packaging case, what
18 percentage -- maybe you do not know, but when did you
start using recycled paper in your packaging in this
19 country approximately?
A. I do not know the date. It has been some time, but I
20 do not know the date.
21 Q. Was it in the early 90's, something like that?
A. I just told you, I do not know the date. I am sorry.
22 I do not remember.
23 Q. Do you know when McDonald's started introducing recycled
paper in their packaging in the United States?
24 A. No, I do not know the date. Again it has been
sometime ago, but I do not know the date. I am sure there
25 are people coming after me as witnesses who can give you
precisely the moment.
26
Q. Yes. I will move on to post consumer recycling. In the
27 1980s, for example, in this country, was there any
recycling by McDonald's of waste packaging by consumers or
28 by McDonald's after consumers had bought?
A. In the 1980's?
29
Q. Yes, in the 1980's?
30 A. I do not know. I would think we would probably have
started then on the corrugated recycling programme.
