Day 009 - 08 Jul 94 - Page 47
1 I do not get involved with compliance issues. There are a
lot of compliance issues related to building. No, the
2 issues I deal with are beyond compliance issues.
3 MR. MORRIS: I am trying to see how wide your brief goes. Have
you a, sort of, generally open brief? If you felt there
4 was an area of the company's practices that has impacted
on the environment but did not apply to packaging or
5 energy, would you be expected to come up with some
recommendations?
6 A. Yes, and my job at McDonald's would be, not
necessarily through myself but through the resources of
7 the company, to identify the priorities for the company,
the focus, the strategy, the policy, and to make sure that
8 we are applying the resources within the company, to
address environmental issues.
9
Q. Right.
10 A. But they would not be under my department. Our goal
is not to have a large environmental affairs department,
11 because that is not how we feel environmental issues
should be addressed. They should be addressed by
12 integrating into people's jobs so that people that are in
charge of the construction of our restaurants and people,
13 our engineering staff that select the equipment, select
the materials, that they are up to date, current and
14 concerned about factoring in environmental considerations
in their jobs.
15
Q. But, presumably, since your department was set up in 1990,
16 your position was set up in 1990, it was set up because it
was felt, was it not, that there needed to be somebody
17 specifically looking into all areas of the company's
practices who could make recommendations by improvements?
18 A. As you can tell from our environmental policy
statement, our company feels a sense of responsibility
19 towards the broad environmental issue. When you read
through our policy statement, you can see that the
20 emphasis and priority is on solid waste management, the
three Rs. I would say that that was the initial thrust of
21 creating the environmental affairs department was chiefly
around the issue of solid waste, but not solely.
22
Q. Not solely. So you have an open brief to look at other
23 areas of the company?
A. Yes.
24
Q. McDonald's is a market leader, is it not, in many aspects
25 of its business?
A. Yes.
26
Q. On the whole packaging side, is it fair to say McDonald's
27 has pioneered disposable packaging in general or just some
areas of it?
28 A. Well, what do you mean by that? We do not make
packaging.
29
Q. No, but you create a demand.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Has the system you use proved attractive to
