Day 249 - 14 May 96 - Page 36
MR. MORRIS: It is photograph 23 in tab 6. (Handed).

MS. STEEL: So, it is the man on the right?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a moment because I want to make a
note. Yes. You had better just let Mr. Rampton look at
them before you carry on questioning.

MS. STEEL: Can I ask one more question because that is it, and
then they can go to Mr. Rampton?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, yes, let Mr. Nicholson see them.

MS. STEEL: It is the one where Mr. Hornblow is in the
photograph. Do you know the man that is standing with him?
A. No.

Q. You do not know him?
A. That is the one you have spoken about.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You said you do not know either of the two
men apart from ----
A. I cannot remember ever having met either of these two
men.

Q. -- Mr. Carroll.

MS. STEEL: Right. But so you do not recognise the one standing
next to Mr. Hornblow?
A. No.

Q. Is it possible that he was one of the ----
A. He might have been one of those that came to see me.
He was not the one I spoke to in the passageway, by the
window.

Q. Right.
A. The one who identified you to me.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just let Mr. Rampton see them.

MS. STEEL: OK. (Handed).
A. I must say I find something odd about that photograph.
I have quite a lot of experience with Special Branch
officers. I have never known them lend themselves to post
photographs like this.

Q. But, of course, you do not know that for this occasion they
did ----
A. I do not know that they are Special Branch officers.

Q. But you also do not know that if they are Special Branch
officers on this occasion they did not decide to post?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: He does not know anything about it.
A. I just find it strange.

Q. He just says he finds it unusual in his experience, that is
all. He does not know who they are, he says, or anything
about it.
