Day 134 - 13 Jun 95 - Page 42
people to complete.

So, you are right, you could go on with an infinite number
of suggested questions, I think, but it is also a point
that you could have a whole survey on safety or any one of
the areas, but it is getting an overview.

Q. But the wage people take home -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I really think you are arguing it now. All
you want to do is make a note, if need be when you leave
the court this evening, that in case McDonald's want to
rely on this as some kind of accurate reflection of how the
generality of McDonald's crew members feel about their work
in the situation where I am going to hear people called by
you because they did not enjoy their work and people called
by Mr. Rampton because they do, you want to make some
comment as to the value or otherwise of this. I do not
think it is helping us any further to pursue it with
Ms. Mead.

MR. MORRIS: The survey, this was the first one of its kind in
the UK for the crew, was it not?
A. Yes. I think -- yes, June 94, yes.

Q. One had previously been done for management before that?
A. Yes, again I cannot recollect the date but sometime,
I think, in the year before because we are about to do
another one.

Q. Just comments on the actual results, bearing in mind all
our reservations about it: Let us look at it on the
original. Sorry, no, if you look in H3, "Equipment is
properly maintained", it is about a third of the way down.
Only 70 per cent positively agreed with that. Would that
be something that concerned you?
A. I think the way we approach all of these points is that
even though this is the overall "agrees" which are 70 per
cent, we would always look to improve them, so they can all
benefit from improvements. So, it would concern me in any
way in that corrective action should be taken where
shortcomings were found in the same way that I described
about some of the other areas.

Q. Yes. Also a third of the way down, just under that last
one: "Have received performance review in the last four
months", only 70 per cent could agree with that. You have
claimed the performance reviews are effectively the way
that McDonald's workers can increase their hourly rate. So
that would concern you, would it, if people, a substantial
percentage, were not getting performance reviews within
four months?

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, it does not say that. If one looks at
the front sheet -- I am sorry to interrupt but it is really
a falsification -- one has to look, not only at the agrees,
but at the don't knows. One can see that -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It does not mean only those have because
there is a query as column as well.
