Day 258 - 07 Jun 96 - Page 62

       A. No, Terry Carroll was in charge on the ground.

  Q. In October '89?
       A. Yes, Terry Carroll was in charge on the ground.

  Q. But you were, overall, in charge of the purpose of that---
       A. No.

  Q. -- investigation?
       A. But he knew nothing about the investigation.

  Q. No, but you instructed Terry Carroll to take photographs,
       did you not?
       A. That is right.

  Q. Because you were aware that it was an important thing to
get accurate, comprehensive identification material, which
is why, presumably, if you were there, you would have
expected to have the security monitors on?
       A. No, I did not ask for the security cameras to be -- you
do not get good pictures on the security cameras. I keep
       telling you.

  Q. Why did the investigators not -- I do not mean private
investigator people like Mr. Carroll -- why did they not
video; or did they video but just lost the tapes?
       A. They did not video.

  Q. We never thought of a video, we took still cameras on the
       ground, closer.

  Q. You do not know what happened to the security monitor
       tapes, or anything like that?
       A. No, I was not using them.

  Q. You did not say to anyone, 'Get rid of them they are a
waste of time', or anything like that?
       A. No, I am not sure that they necessarily taped it.

  Q. You said you saw this security monitor on?
       A. Yes, but that did not necessarily mean that they were
running tapes on it. They might just have a plate on
       display on.

  Q. You said the purpose of having security monitors and
cameras is, say, for example, if someone breaks in you
would have some means of identify; for that purpose?
       A. They run tapes on those every night, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Unless he is going to break in at four
o'clock on a weekday afternoon on the Finchley Road.
I think what the witness is saying, you do not necessarily
have tapes running. You have monitors which you can cast
an eye on, but you do not necessarily have tapes which you
can come back to. For better or worse, what Mr. Nicholson
is saying, he does not know whether tapes were running at
       the time.

MR. MORRIS: In your stores they have security monitors do they
       not?
