Day 166 - 28 Sep 95 - Page 30

MS. STEEL: Have you still got the budget for October, November
       and December 1986?
       A. No, I have not, no.

  Q. But, in any event, you cannot remember how much you went
       over budget?
       A. I would expect I very much bettered the budget for that
particular year as well. The only point I brought these
along was to answer that 15 per cent seemed to be a word
used or, sorry, a figure used in terms of labour. Well,
I only achieved below that figure once in the time of the
lad working for me and, indeed, my budget for the following
year was various months, perhaps, went towards 16 and the
whole year was calculated at 15.39 as a guide, as a budget.

  Q. Did you say went over the 16 -- I am sorry -- because it
       did not come out?
       A. It went towards 16, sorry. You have got 15.92s and the
lower ones being, what, 14.92, yes. The overall effect for
the year on page 2 of that budget is 15.39.

  Q. Right. Do you remember ever going over 16 per cent?
       A. Yes.

  Q. You do?
       A. Yes.

  Q. At that store?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Do you remember when that was?
       A. June 1987.

  Q. Was it just for one month?
       A. It might not have been, might have been more than that,
but that is what I can remember.

  Q. What happened then?
       A. Nothing.

  Q. Nobody said anything at all? You did not take any action?
You did not try to improve it?
       A. I would always review my figures both in terms of
myself and also with my Supervisor.

  Q. You would have spoken to the First Assistant Managers and
the Second Assistant Managers, and I do not know about
other managers, presumably, about these budget guidelines
       that you call them?
       A. Not necessarily.

  Q. You would not have?
       A. Yes, there was only about five of us, but in terms of
       my floor managers, probably not.

  Q. Right, but in terms of First Assistant and Second Assistant
Managers, that is quite likely that you spoke to them about
       what the targets were?
       A. Possibly. I would have also given a copy of the budget
for the year to each of them, not just for payroll but for
