Day 006 - 05 Jul 94 - Page 52

1 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think I am going to hear later.

2 MISS STEEL: OK. Just to go on to page 107?
              A. Yes, 107.
     3
         Q. The McDonald's car wash?
     4 A. Yes.

5 Q. The last paragraph: "It is very difficult to show how
much the car wash helped with the increase in top line
6 sales and transactions, but as a fund raising effort and a
PR exercise in the community it was a great success."
     7 A. Yes.

8 Q. Then on to page 108, news carrier of the year award?
              A. Yes.
     9
MR. JUSTICE BELL: But the whole tenor of this sheet, or
10 whatever I should call it, as one can see from its name,
is to tell local stores how they can boost their -----
11 A. These are results of things that have happened in
other restaurants, some that other stores may choose to
12 copy, some they say are not applicable in their
circumstances, but might be something they want to
13 consider in the future; things like old aged pensioners'
coffee mornings, things like getting involved with the
14 local community in recognising a young man or young woman
news carrier of the year who have done an exemplary job
15 out there. Some of them are fund raising money involving
RNCC, ronald mcdonald's Children Charities, or other
16 entities. They are as long as they are broad. These are
the stories of what is going on in the McDonald's
17 marketplace on a local basis, a local level.

18 Q. But the bottom line is boosting sales; is that fair or
              not?
19 A. Some of them are, some of them are not. Some of them
will be fairly neutral in that regard. I would hope in
20 the end it would help to build the reputation of the
company that it is a contributor to the community, that it
21 puts something back and, as time moves on, when there is a
choice to be made, when people are eating out, the top of
22 mind thought is McDonald's and they come to me rather than
              my competitors, yes.
    23
MISS STEEL: As you mentioned the coffee mornings, it does say
24 at the end of the section on coffee mornings, does it
not: "OAP coffee mornings have proved to be a great
25 success in the community and sales increases are noticed
not only on Thursdays but on other days"?
    26 A. Yes.

27 Q. "When they return with their families and for birthday
              parties"?
    28 A. Sure.

29 Q. Just a final point along this line -- actually, I think
I was in the middle of doing this -- the news carrier of
30 the year award, the last but one paragraph. This is an
award for newspaper boys and girls. The last but one
