Day 137 - 19 Jun 95 - Page 46

eventually come to making submissions you can make up your
core bundles for that topic by topic, so you can get
       straight to the ones concerned.

MR. MORRIS: If I may say what may be the obvious, that we do
       not have any backup administration.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I was not criticising you for not having done
something; it was that I thought there was certain
rebeliousness in your tone when speaking about it. That
has all blown over now, so let us carry on.

MR. RAMPTON: Mr. Stein, this tells us both the numbers and
percentages of the hourly paid workforce that have worked
for lengths of time during their continuous service. Do
       you see that?
       A. Yes, I do.

  Q. There is a group that have worked for between a year and
       two years, for example?
       A. Yes.

  Q. There are some people who have worked for as long as 10
       years?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is that kind of information available to you in the United
       States?
       A. No, it is not.

  Q. Is that to do with the computer that you mentioned a moment
       ago, the program?
       A. Yes, it is. I can pull off of there average hours of
everybody but you cannot pull it off in the detail that
       appears here.

  Q. Do you know anything about computers?
       A. I know some things about them. I am nowhere close to
       an expert.

  Q. Do you have any idea how long it might take to write
programs to produce this kind of information in the United
       States?
       A. That is not just my knowledge of computers. I work
with our Information Services people, frankly, because
I would like to have more data. I have made requests such
as what you are asking me about, and I have been told given
the age of our system and these thousand programs that
interact with it, that it would take a substantial sum of
money and minimum of about a year for them to do what would
       need to be done.

  Q. Thank you. You said you could, however, give a figure for
the average number hours per week worked by the hourly paid
       people in the United States?
       A. Yes, I can.

  Q. Can you please give us that figure?
       A. It is 23 hours a week and some fraction, but it is 23
       hours.
