Day 197 - 07 Dec 95 - Page 47

Stanton was a Supervisor, did you?
     A. I did not have to.

Q. No. You did not, do you?
     A. I did not, no.

Q. You have no idea what Frank Stanton or anybody else might
have said at one of those meetings, have you?
     A. I have, because they were then cascaded down to me at
branch level. The whole part of the meeting is so that
information is then passed down the line; we were aware of
what is wanted and what has to be done.

Q. So, is that the basis on which you told the court
yesterday that this pressure to save on food and labour
     costs originated with Frank Stanton?
     A. That is where I first became aware of the pressure to
beat the costs and save money wherever possible.

Q. How do you know that it had anything to do with Frank
     Stanton?
     A. Because, not only was I told at Managers' meetings
relating to information that had passed through from those
meetings, when Frank Stanton was in the stores the
pressure would ne there. He would be saying things like:
"Only put half a slice of cheese on that; do not put as
     much ketchup on there".

Q. Frank Stanton actually said that to you?
     A. I have seen him and saw him say it within the
     Colchester store.

Q. You have, have you? Just as you say he was at the meeting
which decided that the McDonald's Freedom Fighters should
     be sacked?
     A. Sorry -- I could not hear what you said then.

Q. I said just as you say that he was at the meeting where it
was decided that McDonald's Freedom Fighters should be
     sacked?
     A. To the best of my knowledge, yes.

Q. In 1984 or 1985?
     A. I have already said, I might have the dates wrong but
the meetings took place and things took place. I have
already said I might be wrong with the dates because
I have no way of checking those things and they are done
     from memory.

Q. You are not telling the truth about Mr. Frank Stanton, are
     you?
     A. I have not told one lie. I have no reason to lie.
I have no reason to tell anything that did not happen.
I have nothing to gain by doing that. In fact, I am
losing money by being here today, so I have nothing to
gain by being here at all.

Q. I promise you, Mr. Coton, we will come back to your
motives at a later stage in cross-examination.
     A. Please do.
