Day 046 - 04 Nov 94 - Page 65
Q. So you would not agree with that?
A. I think that advertising is important. I have said
that quite often. I also believe that the in-store
experience is the most important.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I do object to partial reading. It is
such a waste of time. One has to read the whole thing.

MS. STEEL: I do not see how reading the whole thing makes any
difference to the question I asked. I do not think it was
that unfair -- I do not think it was unfair at all.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, Do not bother about it.

MR. RAMPTON: Read the next paragraph.

THE WITNESS: Again I think the ad speaks for itself.

MS. STEEL: OK. I will read the next paragraph.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Read the whole -- are you going to ask any
further questions?

MS. STEEL: "Our advertising is people to people - an invitation
from our people to our customers" -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, I am not asking you to; just allow
Mr. Green, give him a moment while he reads it through.

THE WITNESS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What do you want to ask further, Ms. Steel,
on that, if anything?

MS. STEEL: Actually I had finished and I do not think that
Mr. Rampton's intervention made any difference whatsoever.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will not enter into squabbles at this time
of the day. I think, Mr. Rampton, it would help if you do
want more read, if you just said: "Will you please read
this as well?" because every time you say something like
it, it is such a waste of time. There is a minor explosion
which, I have to say, if you are going to prod people, is
not entirely unjustified, and then we have a squabble like
this at quarter to four when we are trying to finish
Mr. Green without curtailing the Defendants'
cross-examination.

MR. RAMPTON: It is simply this, that if things are not read as
a whole, then I do have to come back to it in
re-examination.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The normal form, as you know, is just to say
perfectly equably: "Will you, please, read that?"

MR. RAMPTON: But I have been doing that since the case began.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Carry on doing it now. What is the next
reference you want, Ms. Steel?
