Day 015 - 21 Jul 94 - Page 45
1 MR. MORRIS: That might be a bit extreme.
2 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have made a suggestion to you. It is up
to you whether you take it up or not.
3 A. Perhaps I could also point out that when we did these
calculations yesterday, we looked at these, at one
4 particular meal which is typical in the context of a day,
not a week. So, quite frankly you are only nit-picking in
5 going on about these changes which have been made. Even
if I am to work them out, even if I am to make changes,
6 even if some do come out that 1,000 or even 1200 kilo
calories, it will not make any difference to the
7 conclusion I am making.
8 MS. STEEL: Mr. Rampton did ask you if, looking at this chart,
would you say not only was it OK to eat the meals one a
9 week, it was OK to eat them once a day. If we look at No.
2 and No. 4, we are getting in one case over 50 per cent
10 of calories from fat, in one case just slightly under.
Does that not make it quite difficult to balance your diet
11 for the rest of the day, unless you are extremely careful?
A. You have to be careful, I accept that. But if you
12 have one of these meals and you start off, as I often do
myself, with something like porridge for breakfast with
13 skimmed milk, banana sandwich, a cup of tea, have a
Big Mac or something like that in the middle of the day,
14 and I have a salad for my evening meal, I do not have any
problem in meeting the dietary recommendations.
15
Q. Do you think you are typical of McDonald's customers?
16 A. I am not saying I am typical of McDonald's customers.
What I am saying is that it is possible to do it. And, at
17 the end of the day, it is up to individuals what they do.
You cannot ram this stuff down people's throats!
18
Q. You can advertise it and promote it, can you not?
19 A. Which is exactly what McDonald's have done. We have
already been through the fact that McDonald's have in
20 their leaflets and in the American document, they have
reproduced the official American recommendations.
21
Q. No. I am talking about advertising and promoting these
22 meals?
A. OK, you are talking about advertising and promotion.
23 These leaflets are part of promotion.
24 Q. No, these meals.
A. These meals?
25
Q. Advertising and promoting these meals?
26 A. OK, well, I do not understand the point you are
making.
27
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can we take stock? Are we still on table 2
28 or have we moved on to more general aspects?
29 MR. MORRIS: We will move on to something else after lunch.
30 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a moment.
