Day 022 - 12 Sep 94 - Page 19
MR. MORRIS: The plaintiffs have suggested that it go in bundle
IV, tab 12, Nutrition, but, presumably, it has not been
put in yet.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I have mine at the back of the orange
bundle IIIA. That is tab 12. Those are Professor
Wheelock's references.

MR. MORRIS: If I just read it out. I do not think -- it has
been read out in detail before and I do not think it will
be a problem, but ----.

MR. RAMPTON: It will be a problem if Mr. Morris is going to be
selective. That is the trouble.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What I have at tab 12 is an article by
Sanders and Reddy. It has on it a post-it in someone
else's handwriting, "Volume IIIA, tab 12". So I was
obviously told to put it there. (Handed). Perhaps I could
be provided with a copy in due course. There is no reason
why Mr. Morris should not go ahead or be told where ----.

MR. RAMPTON: Your Lordship may well find it in a kingfisher
coloured bundle. It is defendants' supplementary list of
documents, bundle IV. It is one of the thinner of the
files.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you.

MR. RAMPTON: It is tab 12.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I only go to tab 11. What I suggest is that
Mr. Morris carries on. If I can be given a copy in due
course I will make it tab 12. You carry on, Mr. Morris.

MR. MORRIS: Dr. Arnott, you have a copy?
A. Yes, I do. Thank you.

Q. On the first page, on the right-hand side, the third
paragraph down, it starts, "First, there has been
enormous" -- sorry, this is by Verner Wheelock, one of
McDonald's expert witnesses on nutrition.
A. Right.

Q. Including health matters: "First, there has been enormous
success in the industrialized world in controlling
infectious diseases as the major causes of death and
disability. As a consequence, the predominant diseases
now are degenerative, such as heart disease and certain
cancers.

Second, research has established the causes of these
diseases and now there is convincing evidence that diet is
a key factor in their development."

When it says "certain cancers" in the first paragraph,
which ones do you think he may be likely to mean?
A. Well, I would have thought lung cancer has to be one
of the most important. It is the single largest cause of
cancer deaths in the United Kingdom each year.
