Day 267 - 21 Jun 96 - Page 52

  Q. So you may very well have done so?
       A. I do not recall taking a letter.

  Q. But you might have done so?
       A. The letters that I have taken--

MR. JUSTICE BELL: He is saying he does not recall, for better
or worse. He is not saying "I have no recollection", but
"I am sure I would not have done" for this, that or the
other reason. You have just got to leave it there, and I
have got to see what evidence I have at the end of the day
from all sources insofar as it is relevant to an issue in
       the case.

MS. STEEL: People used to go to the office at odd times to
answer letters, did they not? They did not just go there
       when meetings were on?
       A. Yes, they used to go there in any spare time, whatever
       I assumed they had.

  Q. So why did you really go to the office? It was not just to
take photos. You would not want to risk getting caught to
       take photos?
       A. Photos could have clearly described the venue, would
have clearly shown the extent of the McDonald's campaign,
and that is why they were taken.

  Q. How would they clearly show the extent rather than, you
       know, your description or whatever?
       A. Something that can be seen by others.

  Q. Why do you not just take one of those miniature cameras to
a meeting and film it while you were in a meeting if you
wanted footage of what was inside the office?
       A. We did not have a miniature camera.

  Q. You could have got one though, could you not?
       A. We could have done. I suppose there are some on the
market but we did not have one.

  Q. Are you seriously saying you went to the offices and risked
getting caught in there just to take a few photographs?
       A. I went to the office to take photographs.

  Q. Did you really go there to plant bugs, in fact?
       A. No, my Lord.

  Q. Are you sure about that?
       A. I am very, very positive about that.

  Q. Why is that?
       A. Because throughout, probably, I know for a fact,
throughout all of my investigative experience I have never
       placed a bug.

  Q. What? It has never even crossed your mind?
       A. Well, I have never done that.

  Q. That is what you were really up to was it not?
       A. No, absolutely not.
