Day 096 - 03 Mar 95 - Page 35
Q. So how long is that likely to be about, is that every five
years or every 10 years?
A. I have enough problems running my own business and
I cannot speak for haulage contractors, I really cannot.
We can only put a specification in and monitor it.

Q. The mortality during transport is 0.02, is it not?
A. If I remember rightly, that is quoted by Dr. Gregory,
if I remember rightly, is it not?

Q. The figure that Dr. Gregory has given is correct, is it?
A. Yes.

Q. On page 234 of his statement he says 0.02?
A. Yes, I think you will find that we achieved better than
the national average.

Q. Yes. I think he says the national average is 0.07. What
does that percentage die from?
A. There are a number of things that one can put it down
to. Very often the vet will say it is a heart problem, you
know, just like anyone else.

Q. That is one of the most frequent causes, is it?
A. It is a problem. You can also have a pig that has
probably had pneumonia in its previous life, which does
happen, and it can have a problem which you are not aware
of with its lungs not still not up to the mark as they
should be. There are many, many problems why they can drop
down from.

Q. So that is not something that you look into and analyse to
see if you can improve it then?
A. Yes, we do.

Q. So what is the most common cause?
A. The most common cause?

Q. Yes.
A. I would have said respiratory problems that have been
in their previous life.

Q. Are respiratory problems quite common in pigs?
A. Just like any other living thing -- that happens,
unfortunately.

Q. What percentage of pigs would be affected by respiratory
problems on either the company farms or the direct
suppliers?
A. I could not tell you that. A very small percentage,
basically.

Q. Start at the beginning, what is the mortality rate of the
piglets that are born?
A. You are talking about mortality from until when?

Q. From birth.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, but you have to give a time, an age.
