Day 039 - 20 Oct 94 - Page 40

MR. MORRIS: I cannot see any other asterisks. I think it must
refer to that table.
A. It indicates that a 50-50 mixture of BHA and BHT were
given which corresponds to 25 milligrams each of the two
compounds. I think the missing page from here is somewhere
else in this collection and has been put back in the wrong
place because I have seen it elsewhere.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just tell us what it says, and any missing
page must be given in due course?
A. No, the top of page 182 it does almost acknowledge
there and say: "This investigation revealed no positive
reactions to the mixture of BHA and BHT", but cites other
studies which have found reactions to BHA and BHT.

MR. MORRIS: Just very quickly, what is the relevance of a
"patch test" as opposed to ingestion?
A. It is more direct.

MS. STEEL: Is a patch test a technique that is often used to
determine what allergies that people may have?
A. Oh, yes. Patch testing is often used to detect
allergies and intolerance to compounds which may be
ingested. It is just that it provokes a reaction that much
more rapidly and, therefore, reduces the amount of time
people need to spend in the allergy clinic in that it
reduces the duration of the test.

MR. MORRIS: There are more details in the summary abstract at
the front of both those last two tests that we looked at.

MS. STEEL: We just brought that up because you mentioned about
the fact that it was contact.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, I understand why.

MS. STEEL: We just wanted to clarify it.

MR. MORRIS: That is all the papers we have for BHA. BHA is
banned in Japan; is that correct?
A. Well, I am not entirely clear what the position is. It
is slightly difficult because the relevant documents are in
a language I do not read, but it is unclear to me whether
there is a formally legislative ban or whether there is an
informal understanding that the Japanese food industry will
not use it.

Q. What has provoked that?
A. Essentially, the results of the study by Ito and his
colleagues showing that it is a rodent carcinogen.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We have been told that before.

MR. MORRIS: Yes, OK.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It was a Japanese study.

MR. MORRIS: So, just one more thing on BHA.
