Day 254 - 22 May 96 - Page 69

finish his answer then you can ask your question again?
       A. I had finished.

  Q. You lost it?
       A. All I was saying was that experiments have been done
which show that high calorie intake and low fat intake
animals get breast cancer more frequently than animals who
are given high fat diet and low calorie intake, these
       experiments have been done.

MR. MORRIS: The general trend, which is what we were talking
about earlier on, you said you have to look at trend, the
general trend is that epidemiological studies and animal
experiment studies have found the relationship between fat
       and breast and colon cancer?
       A. Certainly, epidemiological studies would suggest that
there is a relationship. We have agreed all this this
morning. But there is a degree of inconsistency in animal
experiments, it is not entirely in one direction.

  Q. I am trying to get through this, so we can finish today.
I do not know how much time Mr. Rampton wants to finish
       -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do your best to complete your
cross-examination and then we will see how much time we
       have got left.

MR. MORRIS: (To the witness): You are very much a person that
works on -- I think the last time you were here, from my
vague recollection, you were very concerned about the
biological pathways to identify the causation, the causes
       of cancers; yes?
       A. Well, that is certainly one thing that I am interested
       in, yes.

  Q. Right.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It would be absolutely lovely if you could
       solve that.
       A. I would be a millionaire!

  Q. You would be out of a job as well. This is not belittling
Mr. Morris' question, because he is quite right. If you
       could -----

MR. MORRIS: I mean, that is always the last -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That would be the quick route to cancer
       prevention and cure?
       A. Indeed, yes.

MR. MORRIS: The point is that is the last, the one that is
least likely to be found, is it not, because even with
cancer and smoking they cannot identify the exact
       biological pathways causing the cancers?
       A. Yes.

  Q. We had this last time.
       A. Yes, that is right.
