Day 097 - 06 Mar 95 - Page 79

cow, a steer or a heifer?
       A. I just say that it would not be necessarily something
I would be looking for, for a start.

  Q. No. If you were advising me what to look for, what would
       you tell me?
       A. Well, restlessness, foaming at the mouth I am told is
       quite a good one.

  Q. What is foaming at the mouth?
       A. Or not foaming at the mouth but salivating, extreme
cases I suppose, bellowing would be a fair indication.

  Q. Bellowing?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Forgive me, you must assume I know nothing about animals.
You might be right, you might be wrong, but assume I know
nothing. Do we distinguish bellowing from what children
       call mooing?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is more than mooing, is it?
       A. Yes, it is.

  Q. It is a sort of higher pitch, more strained?
       A. Yes, absolutely.

MR. RAMPTON: To take mooing first; is that quite a common
thing, mooing inside a lairage or a slaughterhouse?
       A. Yes, you hear mooing, yes.

  Q. What about this bellowing? How often does one hear that?
       A. By no means as often as you hear mooing.

  Q. If the OVS or your animal welfare person heard an animal
that was, you know, bellowing consistently, what would they
       do?
       A. I would imagine they would investigate that animal
       thoroughly, yes.

  Q. You talked about restlessness. What sort of physical signs
of restlessness, apart from bellowing and salivating, what
would an animal show if it were restless?
       A. To look at it the other way, if an animal was calm and
standing, eating, drinking, lying down as normal, then it
would not be restless. It is ------

  Q. Forgive us, you see, Mr. Chambers, none of us are
cattlemen. Would it toss its head?
       A. Yes, I mean, certainly when bellowing a cow tends to
put its head down, I mean, would move around and appear
restless. I cannot really say any more.

  Q. Would it paw the ground?
       A. Yes, possibly, yes.

  Q. In films bulls paw the ground before they attack people?
       A. Yes.
