Day 011 - 12 Jul 94 - Page 56

MR. RAMPTON: She asked if there was a chart and I saw it this
2 morning, but not in that one, Professor Duxbury; the other
one, the one you first referred to about methane.
3 A. Certainly, there is a table in the first book which is
the one I have just been referring to. The second book
4 which is entitled "UK Environment" published in 1992 gives
the methane emissions by source in 1990, and if we take
5 cattle -----
6 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Hold on a moment. All counsel is asking if
Miss Steel wants it, you could hand her the first book?
7 A. I can certainly do that, if she wishes to look at the
table, yes.
8
MR. JUSTICE BELL: It does not surprise me that she is slightly
9 resistant to that because she just wanted to have some
round figures to get some idea of comparison. That is
10 all.
11 MISS STEEL: That is right, yes, it is. Never mind then.
12 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you flag that?
A. Yes.
13
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not bother now. No, in the first book.
14 A. Certainly I can call it -----
15 Q. I know you are fond of the UK because you seem to be more
accurate about it, but it is the first ------
16 A. I have put a book mark in that particular page.
17 Q. Thank you very much. Close them up then unless -- do you
have anything more to ask on those figures?
18
MISS STEEL: Not on those figures.
19
MR. JUSTICE STEEL: No, close them up and it can be shown to
20 anyone who wants to see it at the end of the day.
21 MISS STEEL: Thank you. (To the witness): I just wanted to
ask on the beef cattle figures whether you could give us
22 the starting figures, or may be give us photocopy of your
calculations, just so we know the starting figures for the
23 number of cattle used by McDonald's and the number used in
the world?
24 A. Yes.
25 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Have you actually got them there?
A. Yes.
26
Q. What figures have you got?
27 A. Basically, I started out by initially making an
assumption about using the UK figures which I have
28 subsequently revised, once getting the global ones, as to
roughly what might happen. I was given an estimate that
29 McDonald's used a certain percentage of the world total of
cattle. On the basis of knowing that and knowing with the
30 emission is associated with -----
