Day 133 - 12 Jun 95 - Page 18

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It has an "F" in the top right-hand corner.
It starts "Debbie Mosena"; is that the one?

MR. RAMPTON: That is the one I have just referred to, my Lord.
That contains the turnover figure for the last quarter of
1993. Then the document I was next going to refer to is E
which is the previous document in this little bundle which
has six pages and is a sideways on document.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is on that distinctive paper with lots of
little yellow and green lines across.

MR. RAMPTON: That is the one, my Lord, yes. The last page of
that document -- it has six pages -- is a crew turnover
report for the quarter to 31st March 1995. My Lord, this
is why we thought it helpful, amongst other reasons, to
disclose this document, here one sees the actual figures as
well as percentages. (To the witness): Have you got the
same one as me, Ms. Mead? Is it headed Crew Turnover
Report for the Company as at Quarter End, date 31.03.95?
       A. Yes.

  Q. The headings are Total; YTD means year to date, does it
       not?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Then that annualised, then total, then there is a
comparison with the end of the previous quarter, that is to
say, the quarter ending December 1994, and with the
equivalent quarter of the previous year which is the one
ending at the end of March 1994; is that right?
       A. Yes.

  Q. We see what the figures are annualised, 121, 87 and a bit
and 116 and-a-half for those three different quarters.
First of all, what does the figure, current employees or
employee actually represent, because that is the basis for
the whole calculation, or the first basis, is it not?
       A. That will be the number of current employees as at the
end of the payroll period immediately preceding the end of
       that quarter.

  Q. We know that the payroll periods go in fortnights, do they
       not?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So if the quarter fell in the middle of a fortnight you
take the fortnight that ended immediately before that?
       A. Yes.

  Q. If it ended at the end of a fortnight, then you take that
       fortnight's figures?
       A. Yes, if it fell on the same day.

  Q. You are only going to have an error or margin of one week
       either side, are you not?
       A. Yes, that is right.

  Q. So that, as it were, is a snapshot or spot check figure for
the number of employees currently in employment?
