Day 277 - 10 Jul 96 - Page 40

  Q. Sorry, that is what Veggies did with the original
fact sheet, they made their own copy did they not?
       A. Well, that appears to be the case, yes.

  Q. Then if we go back to this document, after "stuffy texts"
it goes on: "Taking action is vital because in the end
deeds not words really matter. That is why we support
groups such as the Animal Liberation Front who break the
law." Am I right that two members of your own group were
charged in relation to an incendiary device at a Debenhams
store in Luton, not including you?
       A. I don't see the relevance.

  Q. Well, the relevance Miss Steel--
       A. If you want to ask me whether or not I personally
support non-violent direct action, the answer is yes.

  Q. Including burning down a store at the cost of £11M -- or
       was it £8M?
       A. I do not support any activity which would harm members
of the public, or anybody else.

  Q. And what about night watchmen?
       A. What about what?

  Q. Night watchmen. Suppose there had been a night watchman in
       that store?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think you are saying, you do not support
       that action?
       A. I do not know what happened with that action so how is
it possible to me to say? All I am saying is I do not
support any action which would harm members of the public.

MR. RAMPTON: Just while I find another document, which I may
have to come back to after lunch. Thank you. Can I ask
you about the last part of this: "If property is used to
abuse others it should be destroyed." Do you agree or
       disagree with that?
       A. I personally would not have written that if I had been
writing this leaflet. But I think that in order to prevent
suffering, for example, if people had destroyed the
concentration camps during the Second World War in order to
prevent the suffering of all the people that were in them,
then I think that was perfectly legitimate.

  Q. I just want to show you a document. I am not going to show
it to anybody else because it is not admissible, it does
not go to any issue in the case. Mr. Morris is not allowed
to see it either, I am afraid.

MR. MORRIS: I have seen it now.

MR. RAMPTON: Probably you are familiar with that. Do you
remember the question I asked you about two members of your
group; do you remember the question?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Would you now, please, look at that document?
