Day 006 - 05 Jul 94 - Page 57
1 which I made it.
2 MISS STEEL: Sorry, I just want to briefly go back to the page
I was referring to about environment/index.html">litter.
3 A. Sorry, you will have to help me which document?
4 Q. It is page 100 of the May 1990 issue.
A. 100, yes.
5
Q. Right. There is a recognition there, is there not, that
6 McDonald's packaging is prevalent on the streets, whether
it is your fault or not, whether you consider it to be
7 your fault or not?
A. There is no question that McDonald's environment/index.html">litter gets
8 dropped on the pavement -- things with our name on it get
dropped, yes.
9
Q. It says it is prevalent?
10 A. Well, it says as long as environment/index.html">litter in our streets is
prevalent in the UK McDonald's stands to be attacked as a
11 major contributor in this social disease.
12 Q. Yes. I was looking at the last two lines of that
paragraph. In fact, the last two and a half?
13 A. OK, "prevalent" is used a second time.
14 Q. Yes.
A. OK. I would have read the sentence together. "If
15 littering is prevalent and McDonald's has packaging, we
are likely to be part of that", surely.
16
Q. You accept that littering is prevalent in our society
17 today?
A. Yes, environment/index.html">litter is a reality; it is a social disease.
18
Q. So you agree that your packaging is prevalent on the
19 streets as part of a general problem with littering?
A. I believe our environment/index.html">litter is dropped by unthinking,
20 uncaring people on the pavement of Britain. Yes, I accept
that.
21
Q. That it is in fairly substantial quantities?
22 A. No, I do not accept that, not in relation to the total
of packaging used in a McDonald's restaurant. I do not
23 accept that at all.
24 Q. No, but in relation to the total amount dropped. I mean,
it does use the word "prevalent" which does imply it is
25 not just, sort of, one or two cups?
A. I will say it again. I accept that McDonald's environment/index.html">litter
26 is dropped on the streets of Britain.
27 Q. Yes?
A. I do not accept that it is the dominant element of
28 environment/index.html">litter on Britain's high streets. I accept that it has
been dropped by people who often at times have a choice of
29 putting it in the provided bins but choose to put it on
the pavement in and unthinking, uncaring manner. I do not
30 accept that McDonald's is the prevalent packaging or
littering agent on the streets of Britain, no, I do not.
