         Q. Has the angulation on the right leg gone with the greatest
2 gait score of three, or can you just not say?
              A. You can only -- you cannot actually, since the bird is
3 now dead, you cannot be 100 per cent certain, but what you
can do is by statistical analysis look for associations in
4 populations and then draw conclusions from that which then
              can be used in interpretation.
     5
So, we are at that stage still, I am afraid, in terms of
6 learning what are the major causes of poor gait score or
high gait score. We are trying to discover which lesions,
7 such as listed here, are the main contributors. We are
              still at that stage.
     8
MR. MORRIS: It does seem that all the birds in this study were
9 over the weight which was given in your statement of the
average weight of the males being 2.1 kilograms, females
10 1.8 kilograms. Do you know why?
              A. We took the birds home live and they may not have been
11 killed immediately. I would have to check up exactly how
soon they were killed afterwards, but it would have been
12 reasonably soon afterwards, but I cannot tell you exactly
how soon. We might have fed them a little bit more.
13 I cannot give precise details. I apologise.

14 MR. JUSTICE BELL: The reason I pointed to that in the first
place was might it be that their extra weight is connected
15 with their gait score, if they have been particularly
successful in putting on weight over the same number of
    16 days as other broilers?
              A. This is correct.
    17
MR. MORRIS: This set of birds in the study was a random
    18 selection?
              A. We tried to actually -- I would have to refresh my
    19 memory on that.

20 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is that actually so, the sample at random?

21 MS. STEEL: According to the addendum, it does say it is a
random sample. I do not know whether you have given us a
22 date for this, but did you?

    23 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.
              A. In terms of the pathologies, no. I have not given you
24 the date for that and I would have to check that.

25 MS. STEEL: Do you know roughly?
              A. No, I do not.
    26
         Q. Not even years, two years?
27 A. Oh, crikey, it would have been within days of coming
back from -- you see, what happened is I went with Steve
28 Kristen to Sun Valley and then I went on to McKey's and
did the pig and the cattle situation. Steve Kestin came
29 back with the broilers and did the pathologies on his
own. Now, he may have done it the next day, he may have
30 done it the day after, both of which I was away doing the
              other ......
