which include coronary heart disease and some cancers, the
precise role of the different components in the diet are
very difficult to elucidate". Do you agree with that?
       A. I would agree with that statement, yes.

  Q. "In contrast to a poison, the time scales can be very
long. The deterioration of the arteries", that is heart
disease, post-mortems on teenagers. But finally this
which Mr. Morris did not draw to your attention:
"Furthermore, these diseases tend to be multi-factorial -
lack of exercise, smoking, stress and genetic factors can
all interact with diet to produce the conditions which
result in the disease". Do you agree or disagree with
       that?
       A. No, I would agree with that, yes.

  Q. Finally, my last question, Dr. Arnott, in relation to the
consideration of multi-factorial elements as possible
contributors to the causation of disease, do you see a
distinction between, for example, cigarette smoking and
consumption of a diet containing a wide variety of
       different substances?
       A. Yes, there is a complete contrast.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, those are all the questions I have in
       re-examination.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, thank you very much, Dr. Arnott.

                      (The witness withdrew)

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The next stage then is to go on to
Mr. Gardner on Thursday, is it?

MR. RAMPTON: So I understand, my Lord.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know when Mr. Gardner is arriving in
       this country?

  MS. STEEL: Some time tomorrow.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So you will have time to see him tomorrow,
       presumably?

  MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If he brings any further documentation with
him -- I am not suggesting that he will; I just do not
know -- do your very best to get it to Barlows as soon as
possible so they have an opportunity to look at it.

MR. RAMPTON: Your Lordship will remember that I mentioned
yesterday that we had some doubts about the admissibility
or the relevance -- same thing really -- of the evidence
of some of the defendants' nutritional witnesses. Your
Lordship has not got, I do not believe, the letter we
wrote to the defendants on 9th September. So I would like
to pass that up. That identifies the witnesses in
       question. (Same handed)
