Day 018 - 26 Jul 94 - Page 65
1
MR. RAMPTON: Knifed. (To the witness): Were any of those
2 cattle beaten that you saw?
A. No.
3
Q. Were any of them electrocuted?
4 A. What do you mean by "electrocuted"?
5 Q. Good question. Were any of them killed or stunned by
electrocution?
6 A. No.
7 Q. Some of them were prodded with an electric product?
A. Correct.
8
Q. "A recent British Government Report criticised inefficient
9 stunning methods".
10 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, Mr. Rampton, I am sorry to interrupt
again. Do you want to put the equivalent of electrocution
11 which is the captive bolt gun in relation to it, whether
they could see that happening?
12
MR. RAMPTON: A very good point, my Lord. (To the witness):
13 Were the cattle waiting to go into the stunning pen able

A. No, there is a guillotine gate which comes down which
15 obscures the view.
16 Q. Then it goes on: "A recent British government report
criticised inefficient stunning methods". Pausing there,
17 do you know of the British government report which made
that criticism? I am not shouting loudly enough, am I?
18 A. No, sorry, I will catch up with.
19 Q. "A recent British Government Report criticised inefficient
stunning methods". Pause there, do you know of such a
20 report?
A. There was a British government sponsored report -- is
21 that what they mean?
22 Q. I do not know. Tell me if you know of anything remotely
similar to what is written here?
23 A. Presumably, we are talking about cattle still -- it
could be the work by Daly and Whittington.
24
Q. I think we have gone general. If you look, it
25 says"animals".
A. I beg your pardon -- wow -- do they mean the FAWC
26 Report in which case it is not British government, it is a
quango, you know, it is a -----
27
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Tell us about that.
28
MR. RAMPTON: Tell us about any government or quasi
29 governmental report you know which criticised stunning
methods within the last ten years or so?
30 A. The 1994 Farm Animal Welfare Council Report on red
