Day 008 - 07 Jul 94 - Page 58

     1
         Q. Are you conscious of McDonald's policies in relation to
     2 the rainforests?
              A. Yes.
     3
         Q. I know it is not your particular position; it is
     4 Mr. Cesca?
              A. Yes.
     5
         Q. But so far as you are aware, does any of the paper which
6 is your concern that is obtained for use in McDonald's
packaging come from any of the rainforests area of the
     7 world?
              A. No.
     8
         Q. Then do you see the paragraph headed "Pet Food & Litter"?
     9 A. Yes.

10 Q. I will read it: "McDonald's and Burger King are two of
the many US corporations using lethal poisons to destroy
11 vast areas of Central American rainforest to create
grazing pastures for cattle to be sent back to the States
12 as burgers and pet food, and to provide fast-food
packaging materials." I has asked you about that.
    13
Then this:"Don't be fooled by McDonald's saying they use
14 recycled paper; only a tiny per cent of it is. The truth
is it takes 800 square miles of forest just to keep them
15 supplied with paper for one year. Tonnes of this end up
littering the cities of developed countries".
    16
I will not ask you about the figure of 800 square miles
17 which is printed here italics, because Mr. Kouchoukos
dealt with that yesterday. I expect you heard that?
    18 A. Yes.

19 Q. What I do want to ask you is this, whether or not the
figure is 7 per cent, whether or not the figure is 19 per
20 cent, whether or not it is fair to describe either of
those percentages as tiny, whether it be 7 or 19, in and
21 before the year 1989, do you have any recollection of
McDonald's trying to deceive people, fool them, about the
22 extent to which they were using recycled paper?
              A. No.
    23
         Q. Can I show you the only document that I have that we have
24 managed to find which actually comes from 1989 and deals
with this question? I mean by that a public document. It
25 is the pink bundle V, tab 34, page 668?
              A. Yes.
    26
         Q. By some fluke whose origin is not known to me, this comes
    27 from Tasmania in Australia.

28 MISS STEEL: It was disclosed by us.

29 MR. RAMPTON: There it is, that is very nice, but we are told
it was dated from 1989. I cannot tell myself.
30 A. That is what I see in the date at the bottom
              right-hand corner.
