Day 118 - 01 May 95 - Page 65

  Q. That is why I was interested in trends. If it is being
suggested it became rather popular to employ under 18
       year-olds ---
       A. No.

  Q. -- for more than so many hours a week or keep real
       youngsters too late?
       A. I cannot think of any trends. Incidents of illegal
actions, yes. I mean, there was the man in Birmingham who
defecated into the syrup tank. That was illegal. I can
think of the manager who regularly swabbed product with the
pizza parlour next door, so that the crew had something
different to eat. That was against policy. I am sure
there were many more; I cannot bring them to mind at the
       present moment, but no trends.

MR. MORRIS: If we move on to the area of policy then,
infringement of McDonald's policy, what trends came to your
attention as in the Personnel Department, trends of
       infringement of McDonald's policy?
       A. Oh, I think the most common one and the reason
I started it was the overtime. That was against our
policy. That was a trend that was creeping in. We
introduced the form and left it up to the Operations
Department to put it into effect or to benefit from it.
I cannot think of any others offhand.

  Q. So have the figures for working of overtime gone down since
       the trend was identified then?
       A. No, I cannot say that it has.

  Q. So you have identified a trend where your policy is being
       infringed ---
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- and you failed to do anything to ---
       A. Oh, no.

  Q. -- reduce that policy infringement?
       A. No. We introduced that. I am not sure that I could
say that it has reduced it, but we are now in control of
it. We can now investigate when these things happen and
find out the reasons for the overtime. If it is justified,
then it is justified, but it will go on.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is what you are saying that the increasing
       tendency was checked?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So that it stayed ---
       A. In effect.

  Q. -- at more or less the stage it had reached ---
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- but did not get any worse; is that what you are saying?
       A. It may very well have got better; I have not really
       monitored it to that effect.
