Day 262 - 13 Jun 96 - Page 14
wanting more information being put on one side for
Paul Gravett. Do you recollect that there was a specific
drawer for McDonald's letters?
A. No, I do not recollect that.

Q. If we find Mr. Clare's photographs that you were looking at
the other day -- I think they are behind Mr. Clare's
statement, which is in tab 5, probably 5C -- if you turn to
the seventh photograph, yes?
A. Yes.

Q. Have you got that? There is a set of wooden drawers on the
left of the extremely untidy desk. There are four drawers
there. Do you see that, yes?
A. Is the top one a drawer?

Q. The top one is not a draw.
A. Then there are four.

Q. If I put to you that the top drawer, which has "1" on it,
was for urgent letters, the second drawer was McDonald's
letters, the third drawer was not so urgent, any general
inquiries about various other campaigns or about the group
in general, and the fourth drawer, the bottom one which has
not got a number on it, was letters that had been answered,
would you disagree with that, would you accept that?
A. I do not remember.

MS. STEEL: You do not remember. OK.

MR. MORRIS: If we had the originals of these photographs, we
might be able to see if we can read the writing.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, you have to get this in proportion.
You have actually put that to the witness. He cannot
remember. I suppose that if someone comes along, you ask
one of your witnesses that or, if you give evidence, you
say so yourself, Mr. Rampton could say, "That is not in the
statement, I have had no notice of it"; but, in effect, you
have given notice by asking the question. So I do not
suppose there will be any objection. So, these matters
which you have actually raised with the witness have got
something shorter (inaudible), if they are important, you
probably pick up later. I am not asking you to pick them
all up, because you have to decide what is important and
what is not.

MS. STEEL: Right, OK.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Provided you have put it clearly and got an
"I do not know" or "I cannot remember now" answer, that is
probably sufficient to lay your ground for later.

MS. STEEL: OK. (To the witness) so, the letters that you put
on one side for Paul Gravett, you do not actually remember
where they got put?
A. They may have been put in a drawer. I may have put
them in a drawer. I really do not recall. It was just
that they were put to one side, figuratively speaking.
