Day 067 - 15 Dec 94 - Page 50

  Q. Have you visited Hungary?
       A. No, I have not. I have again about a week ago, the
last conversation I had with Mr. Doug Gullang, we discussed
Hungary. We went over a lot of the things that would cover
this as well as who set the issues, the processing
capabilities, where have they gone and where are they now?
He expressed and told me that they have done a lot of
improvements; they have improved significantly to the point
that they are as well as most of the suppliers at this
       time.

  Q. Just while I think of it because I forget to ask you at the
beginning, there is nothing here, say, from Japan where you
have a 1,000 stores or something in Japan?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I suppose the UK is not so important because we have
witnesses anyway from that. There are obviously a lot of
other countries, but did you just not get any replies from
       some countries?
       A. That could be the case. In your particular example of
Japan we import beef patties from the US, we import also
could be -- they are always global sourced, they are
sourcing their products from our suppliers around the
world, so they could buy today from the US, the next month
they could buy from Australia, the following month from New
Zealand. They will only buy from our approved suppliers
       though.

  Q. What about all the other countries that did not answer or
whatever? It cannot be more than half of the McDonald's
countries down here in this list at most?
       A. Let me just answer that by saying that these were
answers or responses that came back in 1992. We have added
a number of I would say probably 14, 15 countries in which
       we operate today.

  Q. Sorry, these forms?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: They are exactly the same number as the
letters of he alphabet which is 26. You operate in 74
countries, so that is approximately a third of the
countries are spoken for on the forms. That is what is
       being put to you.
       A. OK. It would also be fair to add that some of the
responses include some of the countries where the product
has moved to that country. We do not have suppliers of
beef or chicken or pork in every single country. But to
answer your question more directly, no, I did not get a
response from every single country that is available.

MR. MORRIS: So are you saying that there are no countries
outside these ones who have local suppliers for their ----
       A. No, I did not say that. There could be a few countries
who have a supplier and did not answer.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, what one does notice, for example, is
that most of Europe is not in this selection of documents.
