Day 104 - 15 Mar 95 - Page 70
bleeding period." Do you see, from your own experience,
any reason to disagree with that assessment by Dr. Gregory?
A. No, I do not.

Q. If that be right, does it matter to your mind whether or
not the spinal cord is severed?
A. No, I think, as I have said before, the behaviour and
the operation and the effectiveness of the equipment can be
quite clearly observed by the trained eye.

Q. Which you would grant that Dr. Gregory has?
A. Yes.

Q. Do you think that the RSPCA is an objective animal welfare
body?
A. Yes. They seem to be making great efforts to be
objective in their operations.

Q. We have not had a copy of this draft of Freedom Foods
document which you say you have received from them relating
to the production of broilers; is that right?
A. Yes.

Q. Does it contain anything which makes you apprehensive that
you would -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Could I ask, first of all, is it a
confidential document at this stage? Is there any embargo
put on further publication on it by the RSPCA?
A. I believe it is a confidential document at this stage
because it is at the consultation, and it would not be
normal to make a document public knowledge until it had
been finalised. I am not absolutely clear on that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am a bit concerned that if you ask: "Is
there anything in it that" is an oblique way of eliciting
the contents, then we really ought to have a look at it.

MR. RAMPTON: Can I put it perhaps in a different way?
(To the witness): Would you wish, in due course, to obtain
the Freedom Foods' accolade or accollation, or whatever you
would like to call it, at Sun Valley?
A. The way that the document is laid out, there are a
whole host of issues in it that need to be discussed and
clarified, and it is really quite complicated at this
stage. I have really only read it very briefly.

Q. My Lord, in that case I will leave it exactly where it is.
Three more things only: Can I go back to your conversation
with Clare Druce, please, Dr. Pattison? Give us the date
of that again -- it is just that I have forgotten --
roughly?
A. The date would be January 1994, I think.

Q. You said, I think, it was some time after the demonstration
had taken place?
A. Which took place in December 1993.

Q. You said you detected from the conversation that she was
well familiar with the people who had conducted the
