Day 207 - 23 Jan 96 - Page 16
there in the relevant period, had you not, before February
94? You were the First Assistant Manager for the whole
period being reviewed?
A. Well, yes, there were two other First Assistant
Managers as well.

Q. There were two others as well?
A. Yes.

Q. Who were they?
A. Sean Richards and Kevin Easton.

Q. Kevin Easton. You never got any talking to or anything as
a result of this?
A. No.

Q. Right. I will just flick through the substance of that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You aim for a B. I have to confess that if
ever I got what is a grade C in an exam I thought I had
done rather well, 79 per cent, but that would be a rather
indifferent result, would it?
A. The, as I say, C, so far as I am aware, is acceptable
-- well, C is an acceptable rate, but we would aim -- we
would like to be at B. You know, if you -- it is a matter
of where you set your target to be.

MR. MORRIS: Right. Just if we go to page 177, these are
official forms that should be displayed, are they?
A. They are preprinted documents that should be displayed
in the appropriate area of the store, be it the Manager's
office or somewhere else within the building, for the crew,
et cetera.

Q. Right. We just note there are some noughts there, but I do
not think any of those are actually legally enforceable to
display them, I do not think the ones that are not
displayed are actually -----
A. The insurance certificate would be.

Q. Right. That is the lift. Have you got a lift?
A. We have a lift, yes.

Q. So, we have a nought for that, lift insurance certificate.
Hold on a second -- on the next page 178, it says,
"Qualified first aiders, list displayed".
A. I am afraid I have not got page 178.

Q. (Handed). It says under "First Aid", "Qualified First
Aiders list displayed, nought out of 20". At that time
were there no qualified first aiders in the store, do you
remember?
A. I think it is just the fact that the list is not
displayed.

Q. Right. OK. At the very top: "SSP administration, nought
out of 10". I think I recall somewhere in the rap sessions
(which we will come to another time) about people
complaining about statutory sick pay. Do you remember this
being some kind of problem round this time?
