     7        Helen was saying earlier on about how you like to associate
     8        with certain -- she said distance issues or organisations
     9        in order to improve the McDonald's image by association
    10        with somebody that is doing something worthwhile like the
    11        Tidy Britain Group for example?
    12        A.  We have done a lot of work with the Tidy Britain Group.

    14   Q.   If you look at the top of the page, the right-hand column:

    16        Both McDonald's and the British Athletic Federation are
    17        successful organisations sharing the ideals of team work,
    18        courage and dedication to achieving their targets."

    20        At the bottom, the last complete paragraph, it says:

    22        "Sponsorship of athletics is designed to emphasise the
    23        clear energetic contemporary image of McDonald's, giving
    24        both high profile exposure and exposure at grass roots.  It
    25        is the most popular sports amongst our customers. It
    26        promotes the nutritional value and quality of our products
    27        and aims to drive volume through its stores."

    29        you are trying to associate yourself with worthwhile
    30        organisations in society in order to improve your own image
    31        and to promote, as you say, the nutrition value of your
    32        food in that case and to improve your profits.  Would you
    33        accept that?
    34        A.  I would, definitely, and the association is very much a
    35        two-way stream.  It works both ways or the other party
    36        certainly would not do it.

    38   MS. STEEL:  When you were giving evidence-in-chief, you said
    39        that McDonald's food would have no effect in causing
    40        degenerative diseases even if you ate McDonald's meals 6
    41        times a week.

    43        If you felt that your customers' health was at risk as a
    44        result of the food that they were eating at McDonald's, and
    45        the contribution that made to their diet, would you take
    46        any steps?
    47        A.  If I thought our customers were in danger in any way I
    48        would take whatever I thought was endangering them off the
    49        menu in a second.

    51   Q.   Would you take any steps if you felt they were eating too 
    52        much of your food as opposed to one specific? 
    53        A.  The quantity they wish to eat of at McDonald's is
    54        governed by many things, primarily them.  If I am able to
    55        satisfy their need or want I think they should come in as
    56        often as they wish.  I will, however, continue to provide
    57        them with information about making intelligent choices,
    58        balancing their diets, balancing their lifestyle and hope
    59        that whether they are 80 or 8 they do the right thing.
