       Restaurants Limited".
       A. It is the policy statement that is displayed in all
       restaurants.

  Q. I was going to ask you first of all if you knew what the
Health and Safety Executive meant by the words "mission
       statement"?
       A. I think that is the company's vision of where they want
to be on health and safety. It just embodies what the
company's view is on health and safety.

  Q. It may be a question that neither you nor I would know the
answer to, Mr. Atherton. So far as can you tell does it
differ from what we have in front of us now or is it the
same sort of thing? Do you want a legible copy?
       A. No. I think the document you possibly referred me to
earlier, which was done in November 1991, outlined what he
company's health and safety policy was and what our mission
       was.

  Q. I am not asking him to read it. I am asking him to look at
the document and tell us whether he knew whether that was a
       mission statement or not.
       A. I do not know what they were meaning by a "mission
statement" but I think it would cover what their meaning
was. There was a direction and a policy on health and
safety within McDonald's at that time. So we knew what our
mission was which was to ensure the health and safety of
our employees. We also knew how we were going to do that
because we stated it in a policy document and also within
       this.

MR. RAMPTON: Thank you very much, Mr. Atherton.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am afraid you may have to go to Scotland on
       Friday after all!

I am grateful to everyone for being forbearing in staying
late. We obviously do not want to stay in court a minute
more than we have to now, but what about tomorrow?

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, it is a matter for your Lordship. There
is a spare day tomorrow. One possibility is just to
       continue with interlocutory questions.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Are you up to that?

MS. STEEL: Yes, I think so.

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will resume at 10.30 tomorrow.
