Day 122 - 05 May 95 - Page 51

Q. For that the guideline is: "Performance meets job
requirements and expectations, steady contributor, job well
done"?
A. Yes.

Q. For "excellent" you have to get at least 87 per cent?
A. Yes.

Q. The guideline is: "Performance consistently exceeds job
requirements and expectations, significant contributors"?
A. Yes.

Q. So, that is what I put to you earlier and you said that was
not right.
A. No, no, what was attainable. What is attainable is 100
per cent.

Q. I do not think I said "attainable" actually.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What is the point you are getting at? I
mean, what is wrong with, what are you attacking there?

MS. STEEL: I will come on to that. (To the witness): In
order to get the outstanding, the 15 pence, you have to get
93 and a half per cent?
A. Yes.

Q. "Performance is always of exceptional quality, our best
performers"?
A. Yes.

Q. You agreed that would only apply to a small percentage of
the crew?
A. I have no idea what percentage of the crew it applies
to.

Q. Right. It is exceptional, so by definition that is going
to be a small percentage?
A. We could have a lot of exceptional people; I like to
think we have.

Q. They would not be very exceptional then, would they? The
point is that in order to get any kind of increase -- in
actual fact, I do not think 10 pence is that much of a huge
increase, but even in order to get 10 pence an hour, you
have to consistently exceed job requirements; so you would
have to work much harder than was expected of you and much
faster and smile as often as you possibly could and
consistently sell up to customers, things like that?
A. No, you just have to be an excellent performer.

Q. Yes, consistently exceeding the job requirements?
A. I have no argument with that. I am sorry, I cannot see
where that makes us any different to any other employer.

Q. If they just meet the requirements of the job, then they
are going to stay only five pence above the minimum wage?
A. But I would have thought everybody is striving to be
good at their job.
