Day 059 - 01 Dec 94 - Page 58
Q. Have you still got the file with your statement in front of
you?
A. Which one was it?

Q. It is yellow III.
A. OK.

Q. If you could turn to page 2 of the statement?
A. Right.

Q. You have said that the Defendants' Particulars of
Justification and Fair Comment that it was not until in or
around May 1990 that McDonald's took its first step towards
developing a waste minimization and recycling programme is
incorrect?
A. I said an Environmental Task Force was established in
October 1990. Which part are you referring to, May 1990?

Q. The paragraph 7 above.
A. Sorry. OK.

Q. So, are you saying that what is wrong with paragraph 7 is
that it should actually be October 1990 rather than May
1990?
A. No, I was just reading the wrong paragraph.

Q. No, but I am asking you, in the light of what I asked you a
couple of minutes ago, are you saying that it should be
October 1990?
A. No, no, it should not be October 1990.

Q. So, what steps towards developing a waste minimization and
recycling programme did you take before 1990?
A. I think major steps in terms of recycling as we
outlined this morning.

Q. What do you mean by that?
A. We instituted recycled materials in I think it was 1988
in our Nottingham test which we asked the public to recycle
materials in the restaurant which we were then encouraged
to ask Lin Pac to set up a recycling plant to process those
recycling materials. On the waste minimisation, in terms
of the shortening that we use in the restaurants, as far as
I can remember, and it is not an area I work with
particularly, but we have always minimised waste in that
area.

Q. I mean, at the moment I am just talking about packaging.
The scheme in Nottingham was also a very limited scheme,
was it not?
A. It was four restaurants.

Q. Right. What happened to the separated waste that you
managed to collect?
A. In Nottingham?

Q. Yes.
A. Nothing happened at that time because there was no
infrastructure to deal with it.
