Day 208 - 24 Jan 96 - Page 69

I think your percentages fall in the appropriate box as for
five pence or 10 pence. But you can raise the premium on
the crew and still be in the good percentage.

MR. MORRIS: McDonald's have very high standards.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: There we are. There are many paradoxes in
this case. £7,500 a year, and you seem to be quite happy
in your work; is that right?
       A. Yes.

MS. STEEL: If you could turn to page 211 in volume 1. Have
       you found it?
       A. Am I looking for something to do with -----

  Q. 211.
       A. Rap sessions, is it?

  Q. Yes, that is right. It says under "Alan Charlesworth,
First Assistant", the second sentence is: "Unwilling to
spend money on things that matter, e.g., maintenance and
repair." Do you remember that complaint about
       Mr. Charlesworth?
       A. Not really, because I did not go to the rap session.
So, no, I do not remember. I may have read it when it came
out but, no, I do not remember it at all.

  Q. On page 249, under: "How well is the equipment and building
maintained", it says: "Cleanliness is good, but actually
fixing things is not good, especially in the back-up
areas." Would you accept that as a criticism of the store?
       A. I am not really sure what was supposed to be wrong with
the back-up areas, to be honest. It says back area. I do
not really know -- it does not say what is specifically
wrong with the back-up area, so I cannot really say.
I think fixing things like the toasters which have been
broken here, but we get something back as soon as
possible. So I would say in that respect it is quite true,
but I am not sure what is wrong, supposed to be wrong with
the back-up areas. I cannot really say it was fixed or
       what, really.

  Q. If you turn to page 178 -- and I am trying to do this
quickly -- if you look at the scores, in particular, the
first three and the fifth, and then the First Aid list,
underneath that: "Supplies. No plasters, qualified First
Aiders list displayed", and there is nought out of 20 for
       that. Do you see that?
       A. Yes.

  Q. The following page, the health and safety file, nought out
       of 10. Do you see?
       A. Yes.

  Q. There are also complaints in the rap sessions that health
and safety is not taken seriously. Would you accept, from
looking at that, that health and safety is not put as a
       number 1 priority?
       A. I do not know. Health and safety is in respect of
looking after crew. I would say, yes, it is, like -- if
