Day 074 - 16 Jan 95 - Page 42
the employee who has gone out, then she might decide to go
and check them. It is basically like any other job. It is
a spot check or checks whenever they think it is necessary.

Q. So, between them the dining area host and the shift manager
check the route, what, the whole of the route three or four
times in a shift?
A. Two, three, four, depending on whether they are busy or
they are not busy, or depending on who is working; if it is
a new employee who has been doing it or a specific person
who is very reliable and you know that he is going to do a
methodical job. So, it basically varies.

Q. Were there any longer walks that extended further with
environment/index.html">litter patrols?
A. No, there were not.

Q. You said something about often the employees on the environment/index.html">litter
patrols only came back with six, seven or eight cartons or
sometimes only a straw, or something like that; is that
right?
A. Yes, there were occasions.

Q. What about other environment/index.html">litter apart from company environment/index.html">litter, did they
not pick that up?
A. Yes, but it is never counted, that type of environment/index.html">litter, but
McDonald's own which you are mostly to check, you know,
that what is going on in the area. So, you look at your
own. Others you cannot recognise, you know, where the
environment/index.html">litter has come from.

Q. When they get back they separate out the McDonald's environment/index.html">litter
from the other environment/index.html">litter that they have collected?
A. No. Basically, you check it. You look in the bag and
you know roughly what is inside but not exactly, you know,
they will not separate it or anything.

Q. So about how full were these sacks that they came back with
it?
A. Like I said, you know, because the frequency was such,
you can multiply by the whole day how much it was, but just
a few handful items, unless -- we sometimes used to empty,
when we used to empty the Council bins outside on Saturday
especially when they used to get filled up, and we used to
just make sure that there was no -- they were not over
spilled.

Q. So if you could see that there was six, seven or eight
McDonald's cartons in the bag, presumably, there was not a
massive quantity of environment/index.html">litter from other sources otherwise you
would not really be able to see them, would you?
A. That is correct, yes.

Q. So do you think it was about half and half or something?
A. It is very difficult to quantify because you are
talking about a two-year period; sometimes it is more of
one kind, sometimes it is more of other kind, sometimes it
is newspaper. So, overall, I would not say half and half
or anything but, you know, a few of one kind, a few of
other kind -- it is just a mixture.
