Day 042 - 31 Oct 94 - Page 28

far too low an opinion of the intelligence of children.
They are quite able to determine on television when
something is fantasy. Maybe a Tom & Jerry cartoon is
fantasy, but they would go into a shop and buy a Tom &
       Jerry puppet or toy.

  Q. Then do what with it?
       A. Play with it.

MS. STEEL: Carry on. (Pause) I think this one we have actually
       seen before.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We can fast forward through that.

MS. STEEL: We have seen this one before, but I would like it
       to be shown.

                 (The next advertisement was shown)

MS. STEEL: Can you pause? What were those things floating
       around in space?
       A. They were supposed to be hamburgers.

  Q. They are a product that McDonald's sells?
       A. Those particular ones were not, but a hamburger
certainly is, yes. They were just mock-up products; they
       were not real.

  Q. They may not be real ones. Perhaps you can show that bit
again? I believe one of them has a wrapper on it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. A McDonald's wrapper.

(The advertisement was shown once more)

MS. STEEL: Okay. They are a product sold by McDonald's, are
       they not?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Are those Chicken McNuggetts?
       A. Yes.

MS. STEEL: Yes, they are. I think we can fast forward the next
       one.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you have a point? Is that the ad which
-- I cannot remember whether it was Miss Dibb or Miss
Gallatley now who says it would lead children to think that
the McNuggetts were actually made from birds?

MS. STEEL: She may have said that. I cannot remember. I mean,
the point I was making was that the McDonald's products are
being shown in one form or another.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: I think a point was made -- the point we are
showing this is to put to the witness that the adverts to
children show McDonald's products, because it was said that
the adverts for children did not.
