Day 062 - 06 Dec 94 - Page 15

many grammes per square metre one has got, but one excludes
       the coating; is that right?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. The higher percentage, as one would expect, excludes the
coating, and the percentage at the bottom of the table
includes the coating because that is the total board; is
       that right?
       A. Yes, clay coating are not paper fibres so, therefore,
they have been given excluded as well.

  Q. So if one wants to know what proportion of McDonald's paper
use, tree use, if you like, consists of recycled fibre, one
should be looking really at the first of those lines,
should one not, or have I got that wrong?
       A. I have for safety reasons always used the minimum
percentage which is actually a bit lower than whatever is
stated here. One should use, if you have the total weight
of a packaging, you should use the percentage of that total
packaging. So, therefore, you should include the clay
       coating.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is percentage of total material?
       A. It is percentage of total material, yes.

MR. RAMPTON: I am not going to argue with you. Does your
       Lordship want to pursue it?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, I do not. It is just that was his
understanding of what one should show in a percentage.

MR. RAMPTON: I understand. (To the witness): Can we look at
the top -- I do not know what you call it -- graphic,
perhaps we can call it, am I right in thinking that this is
       a cross-section of the material?
       A. Yes, you are.

  Q. So, it is a sort of a double sandwich, is it?
       A. It is exactly that, yes.

  Q. Imagine, if you will, one has to turn it,
I suppose -- where would the food go if this was being used
       for McNuggets or for fries?
       A. The food would come on top of that.

  Q. So we put our picture of McNuggets on top of the clay
       coating at 27 grammes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Do you know the reason why this paperboard has got clay
coating on the, if I can call it, inside as well as the
       outside?
       A. Clay coating in general is used for printability.

  Q. Yes, but you do not print on the inside of the packet
       normally, do you?
       A. Of the fry cartons, we do.

  Q. You do, do you?
       A. Yes, and we also do on various parts of the clam
