Day 158 - 19 Jul 95 - Page 15
the words "including and/or". So it should say: "Regions
including and/or bordering areas of ex-rain forest land".

Then it continues all the way down to the bottom, except
that between 66 and 75 it should read after that: "38 per
cent of the Amazon forest", and then cross off "was". So
it says: "38 per cent of the Amazon forest cut down", and
then cross off "to be replaced" -- I am sorry I did not
type this up last night; it would have helped -- and
say "was caused".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Between 1966 and 1975, 38 per cent of the
Amazon Forest -----

MR. MORRIS: ".....cut down was caused by cattle ranching".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So you take out "to be replaced", do you?

MR. MORRIS: Yes. This was a misunderstanding of some
information. "Of the forest cut down, 38 per cent of it
was caused by cattle ranching"; and then add, at the end of
"cattle ranching", "and a further 30 per cent was by
colonisation".

There are two additional sentences after that and no more
alterations. The two more additional sentences are:
"Cattle ranching outside the Amazon is the principal
reason for the movement of peasants into the Amazon,
causing deforestation. These peasants can and have invaded
indigenous Indian land."

MR. JUSTICE BELL: "These peasants can invade and have invaded".

MR. MORRIS: Yes, that is better, thank you. Then the final
short sentence: "By this process, McDonald's have aided
rain forest destruction and helped to maintain ecological
problems and social inequalities" -- presumably, in Brazil;
you might as well add "in Brazil".

McDonald's have accepted that they get beef reared in
Brazil, delivered to them in Brazil; and we have an example
where it has also been exported to the UK. That is all
established.

The evidence that has been given by the Plaintiffs, there
are two main things that I had time to track down last
night: the Vesty letter -- it may be very helpful if
people could have a copy of the Vesty letter in front of
them.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I want you to refer me to matters such as
that.

MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Obviously, time is important, but I do not
want you to rush so that you do not refer me to the matters
you rely on. I do not keep all these matters in my mind
and I have not made my own list of matters I thought you
might refer to. So you take me to them.
