(Ruling followed -- see separate transcript)

What I suggest you do is, if you are going to read it,
you read it now and then we will see what else there is to
deal with and take a five minute break if necessary.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I have got a few things I would like to
mention today after the reading of the statement, if I may?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you have anything else to do today? Have
you got other matters you want to read?

MR. MORRIS: Well, I wanted to -- I keep having problems with
this US video transcript. I did not want to read out the
whole transcript but, if you remember, I did pass up a
       marked copy.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, a highlighted one.

MR. MORRIS: Which the plaintiffs have identical. And I did
want to point out why some of it was marked, just in case.
Because some of it there is a whole paragraph marked, but
there may only be three words that are relevant but we
thought it fair to include the whole paragraph.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I am going to say something about that
anyway. So, perhaps we can leave that for the moment.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Right, well what I suggest is that you read
Dr. Barnard's statement verbatim. The stenographer can
then be confident that she need not get it down, because
she can be given a photocopy in due course. So just read
straight through. Do not read the list of references.

MR. MORRIS: In fact, I shall just miss out all the references
       to references if you like.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Take the references as read. When you come
to them you need not read them out. Read it straight
through steadily and then we will have a five minute
       break. Yes.

  MR. MORRIS: (Reading statement):

"Statement of Dr. Neal D Barnard M.D. July 1, 1996.
The following comments address the very real risk related
to heart disease posed by food products of the type sold at
McDonald's restaurants. In addition I will discuss recent
reports on the relationship between fat and breast cancer.

            Fat, Cholesterol and Heart Disease.

McDonald's products tend to be high in fat and
cholesterol. Diets that is are high in fat and cholesterol
increase the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD). This is
of grave concern because heart disease is very common in
the UK, the US and other western countries. An estimated
6,160,000 Americans had coronary heart disease in 1992,
defined as angina pectoris (chest pain) and/or a history of
heart attack. The epidemic is not limited to older
