Day 208 - 24 Jan 96 - Page 31

Looking on it age wise and the prospects, I have better
prospects than most of my friends.

  Q. "Competitive" is a Company phrase, is it not, that is why
you have used it in this paragraph?
       A. Not at all.

  Q. That is what the Company says about their pay. Was it your
suggestion that it went in there?
       A. That was -- I believe that was my quote.

  Q. But it is a frequently used word by the Company in, for
       example, rap sessions?
       A. I believe it to be a business term.

  Q. A business term? OK.

MR. MORRIS: What does it actually mean -- because I have never
understood what it meant? What do you mean, your pay is
       competitive?
       A. In terms of people in a similar job, it would be
       equally as good or better.

  Q. Equally as good or better than a similar job?
       A. I.e., in the retail trade.

  Q. Retail trade. If it was established that McDonald's pay
was, in fact, lower than most of its competitors in the
retail trade -- and there has been evidence on this in the
past, in this case -- so then the pay would be
       uncompetitive?

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well -----

  MR. MORRIS: By your definition?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We have to show some self-discipline in the
questions you ask. What is the point in asking
       Christopher John Cox that?

MR. MORRIS: I am asking him what he means by "competitive".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You have asked him what he has meant. He has
explained. The next question is argument to you, that
Christopher John Cox was kidding himself when he said it
was competitive, because you know -- he may not -- this,
       that and the other.

MR. MORRIS: (To the witness) That would not imply, that term --
you would not use that term for someone who was starting at
       McDonald's on the starting rates?
       A. In terms of part-time jobs, it is exceptionally
competitive. It is quite a long way ahead of the
competition we have in the area, I believe.

  Q. What, the hourly rates at McDonald's?
       A. I believe, yes.

  Q. A long way ahead?
       A. I am talking in terms of Bath. I do not know
