Day 152 - 11 Jul 95 - Page 36
the close at one in the morning, how would she get home if
she did not have her own transport?
A. By taxi.

Q. Did she pay for that?
A. No, the Company paid; it had a taxi account.

Q. Where was the money kept that paid for the taxi fare?
A. We used to get a weekly invoice from the taxi company,
specifically detailing where the taxis had been, who they
dropped off, not who they dropped off but where they
dropped them. Then we paid for the taxi account through
petty cash.

Q. Through the petty cash. From what time in the evening were
these taxis available at the Company's expense?
A. Only at the end of a close.

Q. At the end of the close?
A. Yes.

Q. So after midnight?
A. After midnight, yes.

Q. There was in those days, Mr. Davis, a law that girls under
18 could not work, I think, passed 10 o'clock; is that
correct?
A. I believe that is correct, yes.

Q. And boys not after midnight?
A. That is right.

Q. Is this something that you were aware of at the time what
the legal requirements were?
A. I was very aware of that, yes.

Q. So far as you are aware, you as Manager and before that as
Assistant Manager, was there ever a time when an under 18
worked beyond the statutory time limit?
A. There may have been a time when they went over one or
two minutes because, for some reason, they had either
forgotten to clock off or, you know, somebody slipped their
mind to ask them to go home at 10 o'clock, for instance;
but there was never anything more than that. That would
have been an extremely rare event. We are very, very
strict on ensuring that those particular regulations were
adhered to.

Q. How were you able to be sure that you had adhered to them?
A. Sorry?

Q. Did you keep any record of this so you could be sure that
you were doing it right?
A. Well, there was a number of records. Firstly, there
was a schedule. When that was done we used to actually
indicate on the schedule whether they were male, female,
under 18 or over 18, full-time or part-time, and also total
the hours at the end of the schedule for each individual
person.
