Day 152 - 11 Jul 95 - Page 46
That happens quite frequently.

Q. Did you ever go into the schools or colleges to recruit?
A. We may have done. I do not specifically remember it,
but it would have been a route that we may have gone to.

Q. Did you ever put an ad in the local paper?
A. Not as far as I remember. We never really -- I mean,
that would have been, sort of, the next stage if you had
problems recruiting past any of those earlier methods that
I mentioned. But we never ever had to go to that extent.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, maybe that is a convenient moment.
I shall certainly finish Mr. Davis this afternoon.

MS. STEEL: We just wanted to say that when Mr. Rampton
summarised what our case was on turnover to Mr. Davis, he
has done this before. It is not entirely accurate, and we
think he should be a bit more careful about what he says.

MR. RAMPTON: Perhaps I should know what my error has been, then
I will not get it wrong again.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What I suggest you do, and the way to correct
it, is at some stage in your cross-examination of Mr. Davis
make it quite clear by putting it to him just what your
suggestion is. If it is anything remotely along those
lines, and I know you have got a number of your questions
(in some of your cross-examination anyway) already typed
out, and it might be worth making sure that you have your
suggestion word perfect. One reason for that is that if
I have to repeat it in order to assess the extent to which,
if at all, it is well founded, I would like to get it word
perfect.

MS. STEEL: I think we have put it before.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, you have put it before. You have put it
in differing ways. I am not suggesting they are
significantly different when you make a comparison, but
since you have taken the point that you do not consider
Mr. Rampton's summary was a fair one, I am using the
opportunity to suggest that you get your suggestion word
perfect, think about just how far you go in your
suggestion, get it straight in your mind, get it written
down, and then at some stage put it to Mr. Davis at a stage
which you choose during your cross-examination.

I would like you to be ready to start your
cross-examination before the end of the afternoon. We will
see how we go so far as timing is concerned. I will come
back at five past two, but be prepared to kick off anyway
this afternoon.

MR. RAMPTON: I did not say I had finished. I said that I will
finish this afternoon.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. So be ready to start your
cross-examination of Mr. Davis. We will resume at five
past two.
