Day 006 - 05 Jul 94 - Page 46
1 A. No, we do not.
2 Q. So you still think it is rubbish to suggest that these
activities are carried out for good PR and tax advantages?
3 A. I think they are carried out to demonstrate our
concern for the community we live in, in keeping with the
4 McDonald's ethos of putting something back where we trade,
supporting the people who have supported us. In some
5 cases there are tax advantages, in some cases there may
never have been tax advantages. We did what we did
6 anyhow.
7 Q. You mentioned about free orange bowl drinks?
A. Yes.
8
Q. And meal vouchers for fries as well. I do not know
9 whether you mentioned that, but you give out meal vouchers
for prizes at fetes and stuff like that?
10 A. We will make meal vouchers available to charities and
fetes for giving as prizes in their events, yes.
11
Q. Is it not right that is just another way of getting more
12 custom?
A. Well, I suppose it is in the end, but there is no
13 obligation for anyone to ever come back again. They
receive a gift and redeem it at McDonald's; it is free.
14 If I never see them again, it is their choice. If I see
them again, equally, it is their choice. I did not give
15 them a voucher and say: "Bring it in and you are married
to McDonald's forever".
16
Q. No, but you know that if you give someone a voucher for a
17 free meal they are likely to come in and buy something
else as well?
18 A. No, I am not.
19 Q. You do not think so?
A. It is not my intention. If I gave them a voucher for
20 a hamburger, a fry and a drink or a Mcchicken sandwich, a
french fry and a drink, that is about as complete a meal
21 as we do. There is nothing really else to buy.
22 Q. Do you give them a voucher for all those things at one go?
A. We give out many, many, many all star meal, hamburger,
23 fry, drink vouchers, yes.
24 Q. Is that the standard sort of?
A. That is the normal voucher given out, all star meal,
25 hamburger, fry, drink. There may be other things given on
a local basis, but that is the standard. You raised the
26 question in connection with fetes and prizes, that would
be the standard given out, yes.
27
Q. I do not think up these documents in the files behind, so
28 I have a copy for you. They were disclosed by the
plaintiffs.
29
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you identify them?
30
MISS STEEL: Yes, it is in part of document 46 but I do not
