Day 184 - 06 Nov 95 - Page 38

MR. MORRIS: During this whole unionisation, people joined the
union, 67 out of 102 -- we do not know the exact figure;
I think that is in the official documents of the Labour
Board -- a majority of the staff joined the union; there
were meetings going on, discussions going on, everybody
knew each other, or not everybody, but people knew each
other, had a common background? Management, you said,
would have told Cam if they had heard about it?
A. That is what they said, I do not know.

Q. They said that. OK. You have said that Cam Ballantyne was
close to the staff? He made a point of being much more in
contact than the previous Manager; is that correct?
A. Yes, well, he was in the store every day.

Q. So it would be an absolute miracle if Cam Ballantyne did
know what was going on, would it not?
A. No, it would not be a miracle. It is just Sarah told
everyone to keep it quiet, so everyone did keep it quiet.
I mean, and as for the meetings, I mean, Sarah only invited
certain people to these meetings. At the first meeting she
made it, you know, she made a couple of pointers, like:
"Well, we will get these people to sign up these people
because they are their friends" and, you know, things like
that.

Those meetings, since there were only certain people
involved, like, I do not think Chris or Sean Darby would go
and tell Cam: "Hey, there is a unionisation attempt". She
strictly told, I mean, from what I feel, she strictly told
and tried to sign people who she knew she could either
intimidate or knew that, you know, were with her, you know,
for the union.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will break off there unless there is
something special you want to ask before one o'clock.
(To the witness): When you drive into Orangeville, does it
have a sign "Orangeville" or "Welcome to Orangeville" with
"POP" for population and then a number?
A. Yes.

Q. What is it?
A. I believe it is 18,500 right now.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Two o'clock.

(Luncheon Adjournment)

MR. MORRIS: We were discussing before the break about how you
had been working at McDonald's for five years and
management had been putting over their point of view about
how things should go. You said it had made an impression
on you. Did you ever feel that your independence of mind
had been taken away by management while you were working at
McDonald's?
A. No.

Q. You are quite a robust person, are you?
A. I think I am. I moved out at the age of 18, and most
