Day 127 - 23 May 95 - Page 53

I hope you have a coloured one, have you?
       A. I have.

  Q. This calls itself "Accident and Dangerous Occurrence
Procedure Check List". Where if I am looking for it do
I find this in the McDonald's system?
       A. It is usually on the notice board in the manager's
       office.

  Q. In the manager's office?
       A. In the manager's office.

  Q. Not on the crew notice board?
       A. No. It is designed as a check list for managers so
that if they have an accident they can just quickly look
through what they need to do.

  Q. It says give: "First Aid Immediately. Contact your
supervisor and regional health adviser." Who exactly is
       the regional health adviser?
       A. It is the regional health and safety adviser.

  Q. He or she is one of your three subordinates?
       A. Yes.

  Q. " --- /human resources if an accident is reportable". Then
it tells him or her what are the reportable accidents,
including at the bottom of the box: "If an accident results
in an employee being off sick for over three days whether
or not scheduled to work." Then the red sign I assume means
       telephone?
       A. It does, yes.

  Q. Yes. "Your local environmental health department must be
informed immediately by phone in the event of a major
accident." Then it says: "Regional and safety
advisers/human resources will notify both major and
three-day accidents to EHOs." Then in big black capitals:
"IF IN DOUBT CONTACT YOUR REGIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY
ADVISER OR HUMAN RESOURCES." What sort of case, from your
experience, would give rise to a doubt and prompt the
manager to ring up the health and safety adviser and say:
"Is this reportable or is it not? What shall I do about
       it?"
       A. Something like if somebody fell over and twisted their
knee and obviously were in some pain at the time and
perhaps had to go home from the shift, they were not quite
sure whether they were going to be away for the three days.

  Q. So the manager would not wait to see they were going to be
in hospital for 24 hours or more; they would not wait to
see whether they were away for three days?
       A. Some would. Some ring up and ask about everything. We
would rather they rung if in doubt than not ring and
       perhaps forget to contact us.

  Q. Then it says: "Complete accident book for every employee
accident." Does that include all the little cuts and burns
       stubbed toes?
       A. Yes, the more accident data can you gather locally the
