Day 260 - 11 Jun 96 - Page 29
MS. STEEL: When you say, "I have been looking to see who
actually runs the group", in the middle of the paragraph
that we were referring to a moment ago ---
A. Yes.

Q. -- so it was not apparent when you walked in; it was not
like, "Oh, here is clearly someone who is in charge of the
group" and, you know, so on; you had to actually try and --
would it be fair to say that you assumed that there had to
be someone in control and you then looked for them?
A. Yes. I was trying to -- I think this was only my
second, or perhaps third, meeting, and my object was to
discover who was at the heart of the organisation.

Q. It was not something that was immediately apparent?
A. No.

Q. OK.
A. I think this was the first meeting I had seen you at.

Q. Can I ask you one final thing about the discussion in the
pub afterwards? You say in brackets: "On several
occasions".....

"Everyone went to the Malt and Hops Public House, apart
from Alan and Roseanne. I stayed in the public house for
around one hour during which time I was gently tested by
Helen as to my age, occupation, present domicile, et
cetera. I replied that I was 40 years old next birthday,
that I drove lorries on a casual basis, and that included
Continental work, and that I was presently living in
Camden, but that I would probably be moving quite soon."

Then you have got in brackets: "On several occasions during
this period, I saw Helen looking at me."

What was that supposed to mean?
A. During the time I was in the public house, I observed
you observing me, wondering who I was. That was the
impression that I had.

Q. What, that I was suspicious of you?
A. It was possible.

Q. OK. Just on the point about you -- asking you about --
I do not think you have said this in evidence. The name
that you used at the London Greenpeace meetings was Paul,
was it not?
A. That is correct.

Q. Was there any particular significance to choosing the name
of Paul?
A. No.

Q. Because it might be thought to make things confusing with
Paul Gravett, that is all, bearing in mind there was a Paul
already in the group?
A. I actually have a tattoo on my arm with the name Paul
tattooed on it, so it is a name I use quite often.
