Day 014 - 20 Jul 94 - Page 66
1 grown up and so she is not running up and down the stairs
with babies under her arm.
2
MR. JUSTICE BELL: The general scheme, Mr. Rampton, seems to be
3 that each day, but not every day, has one whole McDonald's
meal in it.
4
MR. RAMPTON: Yes, in many cases, yes.
5
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Nearly all.
6
MR. RAMPTON: Nearly all, although if one looks at Friday for
7 the 16 year-old male, if he has McDonald's items, he is
getting grapefruit juice, Cheerios, whatever they are?
8 A. I think they are breakfast cereals.
9 Q. 1C what is that?
A. That is half a cup.
10
Q. One cup.
11 A. Blueberries.
12 Q. Cup of 1 per cent low fat milk, some hot fudge low fat,
frozen yoghart on a Sunday. So it is perhaps not a very
13 interesting day so far as McDonald's food is concerned,
but it is much the same for the 46 year-old lady on the
14 Friday as well. Perhaps it is a fasting day. What I
would like you to do, Professor Wheelock, is to look over
15 that, this one, you must remember, is from McDonald's own
public Annual Report; this is what they are recommending
16 to their shareholders at least. Look over this and tell
us whether you think this is a good or a bad proposal for
17 a balanced diet. It does mean looking at the other things
as well.
18 A. Oh, yes.
19 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. What is your answer?
A. First of all, they have done the calculations on the
20 total diet and they find they conform to the US dietary
recommendations. Certainly I have no reason at all to
21 doubt the accuracy of those calculations. I think it is
-- again I am not terribly familiar with the American
22 diets; it is a few years since I have been there -- but it
certainly seems to me entirely reasonable that one could
23 put together a total diet with these several visits to
McDonald's per week and still come up with a total diet
24 which matches the recommendations.
25 MR. RAMPTON: One notices they are not eating the same thing on
each occasion?
26 A. No.
27 Q. The boy has a McLean Delux which is a kind of reduced fat
hamburger on Wednesday, but he has a BigMac, small french
28 fries on Saturday. He has McChicken sandwich which is a
chicken hamburger on Monday, and so on and so forth.
29 Really, my question was does this look sensible to you
without knowing the precise figures?
30 A. Perfectly sensible, yes.
