Day 021 - 29 Jul 94 - Page 56

1 edition. My Lord, it is a version of what is at tab 4.
Can I pass that up. (Handed). This is the 1984 edition.
2 I want you to look at the middle page where I have put a
card in which goes with the leaflet which is a
3 supplementary sheet to go with the leaflet, no doubt
              created at some later date.
     4
MR. MORRIS: Has this tab reference?
     5
MR. RAMPTON: It is one we have found recently which is an
6 earlier version of tab 4.

7 MR. JUSTICE BELL: An earlier version of tab 4A?

8 MR. RAMPTON: No, tab 4, my Lord. Tab 4 is October 1985. Tab
4 says: First published October 1984. What we have
9 managed to find is the first edition.

10 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I cannot remember whether we have copies of
that, but perhaps they could be provided.
    11
MR. RAMPTON: We will do copies.
    12
MS. STEEL: You do not have them to hand to us now?
    13
         MR. RAMPTON: No.
    14
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Read it out, can you?
    15
MR. RAMPTON: It is just tables?
    16 A. Yes.

17 Q. What do the tables contain?
              A. A heading which says: "What you are eating at a
18 glance." Then down the left-hand side we have a list of
McDonald's products with the average serving size. Then
19 for each product the following information is given: The
energy in kilo calories and kilo joules; carbohydrates and
20 grammes; the fat in grammes; the protein in grammes; the
sodium in milligrams. Then we have a whole range of data
21 in which individual nutrients are expressed as a
percentage of the UK recommended dietary allowances as
22 they were at that time. It has energy, protein, calcium,
iron, vitamin A, vitamin C, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin.
    23
         Q. My question is, having glanced at it, taking your mind
24 back to October 1984, is that sort of information
irrelevant to somebody who is interested in the role that
25 diet plays in his health?
              A. Yes, I think it would be very helpful for them.
    26
         Q. Helpful?
    27 A. Yes.

28 Q. I want to show you something else. Again none of us have
seen this before. We just managed to find it.
    29
MR. MORRIS: Is this a different one?
    30
MR. RAMPTON: This is an American one from 1987.
