Day 015 - 21 Jul 94 - Page 57
1 A. That is right, yes.
2 Q. One more question and then I will come back to America
after that.
3
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a minute.
4 A. Sorry, I think it is very important to understand that
the menu range in the United States is different and is
5 more extensive compared to the menu range in this
country. Again, that would have been apparent from some
6 of the material that was presented to the court
yesterday. So, for example, there are fat-free muffins if
7 I remember rightly; there is breakfast cereal available in
McDonald's in America. There is the McLean burger which
8 has a much lower fat content than the burger that is
available in this country.
9
MS. STEEL: In this country do you think that people would be
10 ill-advised to eat a meal at McDonald's every day?
A. It depends on what they actually have.
11
Q. Well, if they had your example of pizza, side salad,
12 regular fries and orange juice?
A. Again we are back to the ground we have covered. It
13 makes it more difficult for them than if they had a
choice.
14
Q. Do you think they would be ill-advised to do that?
15 A. I think the whole question is hypothetical, because it
is so different from the current practice that exists in
16 this country at the present time.
17 Q. If it was shown that people were, which I believe it is,
eating McDonald's meals every day, do you think that is a
18 wise move?
A. No, hang on, you said it was shown. In actual fact,
19 and again I understand this is something which will be
dealt with in another session ------
20
MR. RAMPTON: I have to say, my Lord, if Ms. Steel is putting
21 to it that there is evidence to showing that there is
anything in this country possibly from some McDonald's
22 employees who eats a McDonald's meal every day of the
week, then she must put it to the witness so he can
23 comment on it.
24 MS. STEEL: Is Mr. Wheelock not concerned about the employees
of McDonald's.
25
MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. I thought you had taken it outside.
26
MS. STEEL: I am talking about anybody.
27
MR. RAMPTON: We must distinguish, with respect, having regard
28 to the state of the pleadings and what it is in leaflet,
between McDonald's employees which may be one question
29 which may bear upon McDonald's treatment of their
workforce, and the question of nutrition: Were they
30 concerned with members of the general public. If
Ms. Steel is saying there is evidence that members of the
