Day 269 - 25 Jun 96 - Page 74

This was extremely interesting, and one of the reasons
why I originally thought about this hypothesis that perhaps
if you remove the risk of the coronary thrombotic event you
then left a population which was nonetheless protected from
heart disease because of that particular intervention but
then exposed to the underlying risk of cancer.

  Q. But would you agree with Dr. Arnott this far, that
metastasised tumours are not found anywhere in any
significant amounts in patients anywhere but the liver, the
lungs and the bone? Largely speaking?
       A. Largely speaking those are the major sites, yes.

  Q. And we do not find atheromas is those areas of the body
except in patients who have something hypertension?
       A. No, no. I have no quarrel with that.

  Q. Can we then pass to my final topic. I do not know whether
you have been shown my pretty map of tables made from -- it
should be inside your copy of COMA 46?
       A. Yes, I hope it is.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is that one is it?

MR. RAMPTON: That one, my Lord, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The point is, a number of tables in that book
have been put on one sheet?
       A. I see.

  Q. And you should have a sheet. Is it on the top somewhere
Mr. Riley? Over to the left, I think those are maps.

MR. RAMPTON: Those are map Mr. Riley. To the left, try above
       the pink files (Same handed).

MR. RAMPTON: What we have done, we have gathered together
various tables from different parts of the COMA 46 report?
       A. Yes.

  Q. And the first thing I would ask you to look at is the
figure 2.9 in the top left-hand corner?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I am interested for this purpose in three countries in
particular. These figures take us only from 1970, I say
       only, to 1990?
       A. Right.

  Q. In fact, I am wrong. It is '68-'90 by the look of it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. And the three countries I mentioned are France, UK and West
Germany, though if we had a couple of hours we could look
at a lot of the others too?
       A. We could look at all of them.

  Q. Yes, because there are some interesting features?
       A. Yes.
