Day 020 - 28 Jul 94 - Page 75
1
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Answer that question -- I thought we had
2 been through it yesterday -- answer this question.
A. It is not as comfortable as a environment/index.html">litter or straw or some
3 other bedding material.
4 MR. MORRIS: We have not really time to go into detail into
anything, so we had best stop there.
5
Re-examined by MR. RAMPTON.
6
Q. Dr. Gregory, after two days in the witness box you will be
7 relieved to hear I have but a few questions. One question
about pigs, do you have that coloured brochure?
8 A. No, I do not. It may be here.
9 Q. Have a look at mine. (Handed) Turn to that page, please,
which I think is the fourth; there is a big picture in the
10 middle of pigs on some straw. Look at the first of the
two photographs on the right-hand side, please, which is
11 subtitled or captioned, "of those(?) finishing unit with a
cereal crop in the foreground". If, like me, you need to
12 take your glasses off to see what it is actually showing,
please do so. But if you can look it at carefully, answer
13 this question, please: Is that anything like the one you
saw when you went there?
14 A. The answer is no.
15 Q. It is not?
A. No.
16
Q. Can you tell us what the differences are?
17 A. I saw an old style building. It was an old converted
farm building which was not made of the type of material
18 shown here.
19 Q. Do you have any comment to offer at that distance (because
it is quite a long way away) about its construction, if
20 not, say not?
A. It is similar in construction to many pig units.
21
Q. I do not know, but can you tell from looking at it whether
22 it is totally enclosed or not? There is a gap between the
roof, the next part of the building. If you do not know,
23 it does not matter, because I can ask Mr. Bowes.
A. I should ask Mr. Bowes.
24
Q. Thank you very much. The question Mr. Morris was asking a
25 moment ago which you answered in general terms. I want to
remind you simply of something you might have forgotten
26 that you said to me when I was asking you questions on
Tuesday; page 58 of Tuesday's transcript -- you have not
27 got this but I will read it out -- you were telling us
about a new electrical stunning method for cattle, do you
28 remember?
A. Yes.
29
Q. You told us you told Midland Meat Packers about it?
30 A. Yes.
