Day 166 - 28 Sep 95 - Page 66

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, this is the danger, that Ms. Steel will
get some guesses -- Mr. Atkinson is doing his best to help
-- and then she will produce some piece of arithmetic
which she says proves something. It really does not do.

MS. STEEL: No, which might give an indication of something. I
am not going to say anything proves anything.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What are you aiming for? You want to work
something out. What is it you want to work out?

MS. STEEL: Just about the labour costs then.

THE WITNESS: On a Saturday, you are going to achieve a lower
labour than a Monday, which is why when you said before
does 15 per cent get mentioned in every breath, kind of
thing, no, because you might start off on a Monday with
20.

Q. But on a Saturday it might be 10?
A. Perhaps.

Q. Right. If you can just say how many it was working the
night close, I do not think you said -----
A. Around five.

Q. That would be the minimum that you would have working in a
store at a time, is it?
A. I think so, yes.

Q. I have only one more question which is on the same thing
but, on average, in the non-busy periods how many people
would be working when the store was actually opened?
A. At night or day?

Q. If you can give both, then it would probably be easier.
A. In a non-busy time probably round 15 to 20.

Q. 15 to 20 -- is that the day or the night one?
A. Like probably an afternoon, well, the business would
fluctuate.

Q. Does that include management?
A. Possibly, yes.

Q. Was that different to the night or not, or was that just an
average, because you said about day and night, you
asked: "Day or night?"
A. The night times towards Christmas would have Christmas
shopping nights and there would be much more business about
but, I suppose, in general, the nights were not as busy as
the days.

Q. So that would be about 15 staff or something?
A. Yes.

Q. Right. If you could just give a figure for how many
Managers would be on duty at a time?
A. Salary or floor managers or both?
