Day 116 - 26 Apr 95 - Page 20

  Q. What I want to know, assuming, Mr. Nicholson, that that one
female who worked more than 96 hours in that period is the
same C.A. Watts that we see who is aged 17 on page 708 of
the bundle, how is it that they can go about identifying
her and identifying the number of hours which she worked
       during that period?
       A. The computer would throw that up.

  Q. The computer would tell you that?
       A. Yes, it would.

  Q. Are these numbers kept on a computer?
       A. Yes, they are.

  Q. You see those fat ones by your left hand?
       A. Yes.

  Q. How long are those kept?
       A. In the Operations branch and in the Personnel branch --
I call them Personnel -- Human Resources branch as they
call themselves now, they would be kept until the officer
responsible had felt he had dealt with the matter, if it
highlighted the matter. In the payroll department there
are kept for between three and four months and then
destroyed. Once we have satisfied ourselves that the
reason they were produced, to highlight this kind of
overtime being worked, once that had been dealt with, the
       document is no longer required.

  Q. Do you know how it was that we came to have the summaries
for this particular period which you have there for the
       purposes of this case?
       A. Yes, because I made my statement and put some detail of
this particular exercise into my statement. I was then
asked to produce the supporting documentation, and this was
the time at which I went to Payroll and I got the three
months/four months that they had in their possession.

  Q. If one looks through to page 715 one sees that one ends up
       at 22nd December ---
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- 1993. Were there no ones for any earlier period
available at the time when we asked you ---
       A. No.

  Q. -- for these documents?
       A. No.

  Q. Do you think this system has been going certainly for some
       years before that?
       A. Oh, yes.

  Q. Can you then close the big one? We do not need that any
more because I only needed that just for the purpose of
illustration. Stick with the ones which are in tab 44 to
       51. You turn over, please, to tab 45 which is page 709.
It does not appear that there was any young person during
that period who worked for more than 96 hours, would that
       be right?
