Day 058 - 30 Nov 94 - Page 24

MR. MORRIS: So, approximately a third of the new planting area?
A. Of the total.

Q. Of the total area of planting is treated with herbicides?
A. Yes, that is taking a broad statement, that the 11,750
is approximately one third of the 33,200.

Q. Of the total area of planting.
A. One has to appreciate -----

Q. There is another equivalent amount in terms of hectares
used when a forest is already established, so it is not
used much once it is established?
A. No.

Q. It is being planted basically?
A. In other words, according to the cycle that follows, it
will not be used again until that forest area is cleared,
when then it entirely depends on the conditions, because no
forester is going to apply an herbicide if there is no need
to do so.

Q. In about a third of the cases it will be applied according
to this in terms of area?
A. As a generalised statement, that was to give you some
kind of proportion of usage.

Q. If we go over the page, the use of insecticides, are they
used roughly the same time, is that mainly for replanting
or is it used generally ---
A. Well, we stated ---

Q. -- at any time?
A. -- on the top of page 10 in that paragraph, the
statement is "is probably equivalent to the area of forest
restocked" would be the area where this kind of treated
plant is put in.

Q. I did not understand; just explain it to me.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Say it again in another way, Mr. Mallinson.
A. In what is being stated here is that the amount, the
actual number of treated plants that are placed in the
ground annually is not known, but it is probably equivalent
to the area of forest restocked, namely, 11 to 12000
hectares which is .052 per cent of the country's land area.

MR. MORRIS: So, the insecticides are usually used for the
restocking, yes?
A. Yes.

Q. Which would be equivalent to replanting, is it, is that
another word for "replanting" or what?
A. Yes. Again we spoke of this earlier, that the use of
treated plants, that is to say, that are treated in the
seedling form before planting (and I mentioned Permethrin
there as the treatment that is applied) is only where there
is a danger of the early attack by the bud weevil.
