  Q. Right, so how did McDonald's make that information
       available to its customers then?
       A. Nutritional Information was available on request pre-
       1989.

  Q. But that did not include ingredients?
       A. It did not include ingredients, no.

  Q. So it was only in 1989 that the company decided that people
could find out what the ingredients were?
       A. Well, we took a lead from the US company who were
already publishing ingredients prior to that date.

  Q. So why did you just say that you did it from 1984?
       A. Well, Nutritional Information -----

  Q. No, I was asking you about ingredients.
       A. OK, specifically on ingredients, no. That is why
I said to you, are you asking specifically on ingredients?

  Q. You had come under pressure in this country to provide
       ingredient information, had you not?
       A. No, I just told you the reason why; we took a lead from
       our US company.

  Q. They were under pressure as well, were they not, to provide
       ingredient information?
       A. I do not know. They may have been, but I really do not
know, but our lead came from them which was your question.

  Q. People had asked for ingredient information in this
country, had they not, and you had not been able to provide
       it?
       A. No, I have just told you the answer twice. If you
cannot accept, you cannot accept it, but I have told you
twice why we published that information.

  Q. But would you accept that people were asking for that
information in this country before you made it available?
       A. I am not aware that they were.

  Q. When they applied for that information they were told they
       could not have it?
       A. I have just told you, I am not aware that they were
       asking for it.

  Q. Are you saying that they were not?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, he is. He has said he was not aware. In
due course you can put a document before me, I remember
seeing a letter and an answer, and you can say: "Look,
there we are, they were being asked". If you want to ask
me to draw some conclusion from that in relation to this
witness's evidence, you can. You can say: "He must not
have been telling you the truth when he said he was not
aware or, if he was not aware, he ought to have been for
this reason". But there must be a limit to which you can
explore matters with a witness who says, for better or
worse: "I am not aware of this" or "I do not know".
