Day 019 - 27 Jul 94 - Page 56
1 can get very high levels of mortality; if there is
predation, that has to be protected against, so it is
2 difficult to generalise. But I do know of some farms
where they run free range units with battery units under
3 the same general management, and the levels of mortality
can be very similar. It depends upon the level of
4 husbandry and the standard of keeping of birds really as
to what it is going to be. There re more problems with
5 certain diseases in free-range systems because they have
access to their manure. This can foster the pathogens.
6 There is also the problem of predators.
7 MR. MORRIS: I think we have, sort of, really finished on this
general point. We just want to raise the point -- excuse
8 me.
9 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I explain the situation? If you want to
interrupt Mr. Rampton when he is doing something -----
10
MR. RAMPTON: You stand up when I sit down.
11
MS. STEEL: He was standing up already though.
12
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Therefore you should sit down. That is just
13 the rules of procedure. In fact, whenever you have stood
up, when he has been on his feet, he has been punctilious
14 in sitting down. Then when he sits down you can stand up.
15 MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I hand in the admission served on 6th
July.
16
MS. STEEL: Neither of us think we have seen these before.
17
MR. MORRIS: No, we have definitely not seen these before.
18
MR. RAMPTON: It matters not whether the defendants have seen
19 it before; the fact is it has been made.
20 MS. STEEL: It would be helpful if we were served a copy.
21 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a moment.
22 MR. RAMPTON: May I show your Lordship the letter that was
sent?
23
MR. JUSTICE BELL: I would like everyone to stop speaking while
24 I read it.
25 MR. RAMPTON: Sorry. It is No. 2, on page 2.
26 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us take them stage by stage. Do you
have any further questions you want to ask about Oasters?
27
MR. MORRIS: I do not think so. I rushed through them to save
28 time.
29 THE WITNESS: There was a question of mortality, the comparison
between battery and free range. There is one omission on
30 my part and that is with those free range flocks where
cannibalism develops, mortality can be very high.
