Day 305 - 25 Nov 96 - Page 49
he could speak on behalf of the whole group. I cannot
remember now which agent it was and what the date was, but,
just in case we do not cover it in the work we do tonight,
here we have somebody who is obviously doing the work, the
prime mover, if you like, for the anti-McDonald's campaign
within, you know, the ambit of the London Greenpeace
meetings. If anybody could ever act as a representative on
this issue it would have been him, but, even to that
extent, the group were prepared to respond or the people in
the group were prepared to say, "No, we do not have
representatives; you cannot speak; you can only speak for
yourself; you cannot speak for the whole group", and that
is a positive affirmation that the Plaintiffs cannot
connect us as individuals with anti-McDonald's activities
unless they can identify exactly the specific activities
that we took part in. They cannot say that our prominence
or even our interest or even knowledge puts us in a
position where we have some kind of special say, and it is
kind of like a two-way, a reverse thing. On the one hand,
Mr. Gravett cannot speak on behalf of the whole group when
he goes to talk about anti-McDonald's activities. He
cannot speak for other people because it is clearly
differentiating the specific things he is going to talk
about and the views of whoever happens to be around
involved in the group at that time.

I did not explain it very well, but it kind of works both
ways. The crew cannot speak for the individuals and the
individuals cannot speak for the group. That is what,
I think, is basically what I am trying to say and that is a
basic principle of, if you like, the anarchist approach to
organisation as existed in London Greenpeace at that time.

I think that is it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is nearly quarter past four. We will
break off until 10.30 in the morning.
