Day 016 - 22 Jul 94 - Page 66

1 A. Well, it is something which pertains to nutrition.

2 Q. If you say a food is nutritious, what do you mean? What
              would you personally mean?
3 A. I would understand it to mean that it contains
              nutrients.
     4
         Q. Right. So is there any food that does not contain
5 nutrients? Can you name a food that does not contain
              nutrients?
     6 A. I think there could conceivably -- I seem to remember
a case years ago when there was a surplus of cellulose --
7 this was during the war in Leeds University -- and the
textile people who generated this said, well, that would
8 be a good idea if we could go to the agriculturalists, and
we could use it as a food and. Of course, when they fed
9 it to the pigs it went straight through them. There were
no nutrients in it. So it had no nutritional value.
    10
         Q. People do not normally go to the shops and buy cellulose
    11 to eat?
              A. No, not normally.
    12
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you think of a food which, by your
13 definition, you would not describe as nutritious -- by
"food" I mean anything which a normal person might eat
    14 sometime in the year?
              A. No, I do not think I can, to be honest.
    15
MR. MORRIS: Right. So when you use the word "nutritious" to
16 describe food, it is completely meaningless, is it not?
              A. Well I think, in practice, probably people would
17 expect it would contain a range of nutrients.

18 MR. JUSTICE BELL: To the normal person, again I am going to
use part of the same word, but of some nutritional
    19 benefit?
              A. Yes.
    20
         Q. Do them some good?
    21 A. Yes.

22 MR. MORRIS: So would you describe a chocolate bar -----

23 MR. JUSTICE BELL: We had this before.

24 MS. STEEL: Not within nutrition.

25 MR. MORRIS: This is McDonald's No. 1 nutritionist.
              A. I am not sure I am their No. 1 nutritionist.
    26
MR. MORRIS: I thought you were the first and the only.
    27
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Ask the question. Do not bother where he
28 comes in the team sheet. What about the chocolate bar?
              A. I think for a person who is particularly hungry and
29 needed a quick energy boost, it would be very valuable.

30 MR. MORRIS: So sugar is nutritious?
              A. Oh, yes, sugar is a source of calories.
