4 A. We use, as I explained to Mr. Rampton, Dr. Brianny

8 A. Yes. She is an independent qualified nutritionist who
9 gives us information, the information that we publish in
10 our leaflets, and also is available as a consultant on
11 nutrition. The Quality Assurance Department would
12 certainly use her on many more occasions than just
13 providing information for those leaflets.

15 Q. You said in your examination by Mr. Rampton on page 20,
16 line 14, you were asked, "How do you rate the input of
17 Professor Wheelock as far as you can tell? As far as we
18 can tell, he has given us good advice on government
19 legislation. He has given us good advice on a voluntary
20 basis to reduce fat in our food products".

22 MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, what that means is McDonald's do it on a
23 voluntary basis when not compelled by government, which
24 does not mean that Professor Wheelock (I wish he did)
25 offered his services free.

27 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think you will find on page 19 what
28 Professor Wheelock's position was. I think that means he
29 volunteered things, but it does not mean to say he was
30 doing it for nothing.

32 MS. STEEL: Is there actually a department in McDonald's with
33 responsibility for nutrition solely?
34 A. No, not a department.

36 Q. Is there anybody in McDonald's itself responsible for
37 nutrition?
38 A. The Quality Assurance Department would have the
39 responsibility of getting products regularly analysed,
40 publishing information through the leaflets after they have
41 been checked by Dr. Brianny Thomas. Vernon Wheelock would
42 work closely with that department, as does Brianny Thomas.

44 Q. But it is not felt to be an important enough issue to have
45 like a separate nutritional department like you have a
46 marketing or communications or whatever?

49 Q. No. Just a loose end. How many McDonald's restaurants are
50 there in Europe?
