Day 254 - 22 May 96 - Page 35

"The reproductive history of breast cancer incidence due to
higher prevalence of factors for breast cancer which are
related to reproductive history", would you agree that age
at menarche is something that can be affected by diet?
A. Indeed, yes. Diet as a whole.

Q. Just going back a bit, when you have talked about
"inconsistency between animal evidence and human studies,
not reversible trials", would you say that there has been a
lack of consistency in the animal evidence and human
studies, not reversible trials, that diets high in
saturated fats, say about 40 per cent of the energy, cause
blood vessel lesions and increase the risk of the blood to
clot?
A. I would have to say that I am not an expert on that
aspect of the studies.

Q. Right. Would you agree that diets rich in saturated fats
have consistently been found to make blood platelets sticky
and raise the tendency of the blood to clot?
A. Again, I do not think I can comment on that.

Q. I am going to deal with the end part of your statement
because I think I can probably deal with that before lunch
rather than moving onto to the middle part.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Very well.

MS. STEEL: The thing about Professor Crawford's hypothesis.
The way where you have said on page 12 that:

"Professor Crawford has stated that areas of atheroma in
blood vessels might act as the foci where tumour cells may
land"-- I will not read it all out -- and so on. Can I
ask where you got that from?
A. That was from a transcript of his court appearance.

Q. So you read his transcript and that was where you got it
from?
A. Yes.

Q. Right. Because it is not what is said in the statement; I
have not checked the statement.

MR. RAMPTON: Your Lordship will recall asking us to ask Dr.
Arnott to comment on that particular theory.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not think that is the attack. I do not
want to blunder in on your cross-examination but you
put ----

MS. STEEL: Professor Crawford said that that is not exactly
what he said.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. Do you want to talk about the unhealthy
endothelia, whether atheroma or not? Is that what you are
going for? I think you should aim at it because I may
blunder in and spoil some point which you want to make.
