1 or whatever, 21 times a week we really don't expect or
even encourage people to have a steady quick service food
2 diet but in balance and moderation" -- that is underlined
-- "there is a place for our food and we make no
3 apologies for that". Mr. Horwitz, do you make any apology
for the way in which McDonald's food is marketed?
     4 A. I do not.

5 Q. Can we go back then, having read what Mr. Smedley was
suggesting the campaign should focus on, to the document
6 at tab 6 which is -- you keep your coloured one because
you will find it easier, I warn you -- the third page,
7 page 105. It is a letter addressed to the McDonald's
Family from Mr. Ed Rensi. He is described at the top of
8 the page as President USA, chief operations officer. It
              is dated December 1986.
     9
He says: "For the last 32 years McDonald's Restaurants
10 have served wholesome nutritious food to millions of
Americans, food that comes from the basics: beef,
11 potatoes, milk and bread, poultry, fish, lettuce and
tomatoes. These are the same basic ingredients that
12 families all over America use at home, supplied by the
same high quality trusted brand name companies as well.
13 There is no doubt that the McDonald's menu plays an active
part in a well balanced nutritious diet.
    14
Just because we prepare our food efficiently, serve it in
15 a quick friendly manner, in clean wholesome surroundings
and at a value price, does not make it any less nutritious
    16 or healthful.

17 These facts are important to tell our customers and the
public at large. That is exactly what we are going to do
18 starting January 18th, when the first of an ongoing
nutritional print campaign begins. This booklet lets you
19 see the initial set of print advertising we are going to
              use". Right?
    20 A. Yes.

21 Q. Can I ask you, Mr. Horwitz, do you eat McDonald's food?
              A. Yes, I do.
    22
         Q. Are you married?
    23 A. I am.

24 Q. Do you have children?
              A. Two children.
    25
         Q. How old are they?
    26 A. I have a daughter who is 22 and a senior in college,
last year in college. I have a son who is 18 and will be
27 going into his first year in college this coming
              September.
    28
         Q. When they were younger and you had some degree of control
29 over them, did they eat McDonald's food?
              A. They ate McDonald's food, yes.
    30
         Q. When they ate McDonald's food was that by your permission
