Day 275 - 08 Jul 96 - Page 20

out of the conversation. And I think the same goes for,
you know, if everybody is regularly talking about
McDonald's either because of seeing their adverts or
because of, well, because of going to the stores, then
there is a pressure to fit in with the crowd and to go
       along and also use McDonald's.

Personally, I think that that is the purpose of the
advertisements. That they are designed to encourage people
to think that they are missing out on some part of normal
life if they are not going to McDonald's.

  Q. Are you all right?
       A. I am trying -- there was something else I wanted to say
and my mind has just gone blank.

  Q. We will take a five minute break early?
       A. Okay. Thank you.

                      (Short adjournment)

MS. STEEL: I will just carry on.

  Q. Put a mark on it and if you remember later you can
introduce it at some stage. If you have an after-thought
when Mr. Rampton is cross-examining you, I suggest you
declare it as other witnesses have on occasion when we
return after some kind of break. So, just make a note of
it, even if, for instance, Mr. Rampton is cross-examining?
       A. Okay.

  Q. Yes. Since 1982 then?
       A. Since 1982 I have watched "The Animals" film a number
of times. I watched it first on television and then I have
seen it at public meetings where it has been shown, and in
this film shots of McDonald's-land are shown and a
representative of McDonald's states, "In McDonald's-land
there is a hamburger patch" -- the story opens with Ronald
harvesting hamburgers from the hamburger patch -- i.e.,
McDonald's feel children have a great deal of influence on
their parents about where to go to eat. "We are probably
one of the largest children's advertisers in the US. We
spend the most money on children's advertising". So
obviously, having seen that extract from the film, it
appeared to me that McDonald's were rather proud of the
fact that they were advertising to children and thereby
persuading the parents to come into the stores as well.

About 12 years ago -- sorry, forget about 12 years ago
because it is out of date now. Between 1980, I think it
was -- no, it would have been between 1978 and 1918, I
studied agricultural science. As part of these studies I
visited slaughter houses and factory farms. As a result of
what I witnessed I became a vegetarian and I have been--

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Hold on, do you think you have got that
right? Bearing in mind your date of birth, how old were
you when you started the course approximately?
       A. 13.
