Day 267 - 21 Jun 96 - Page 57

  Q. Would you accept that -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, do not answer that question. If I hear
evidence to that effect, and I prefer it to Mr. Claire's, I
will have to wait and see where that takes me. But it is
no use asking the witness if he would accept such and such,
if there is such and such evidence. It just is not a
helpful way of progressing with the issues.

MR. MORRIS: You are capable of making mistakes, are you?
       A. Yes, I am.

  Q. I am pleased to hear that!

MS. STEEL: Can I just ask, for number 6 you have put "Answered
letters regarding McDonald's". When you were in there on
this occasion you did not go down the whole box and go
through every single letter, did you?
       A. No, I did not.

  Q. Did you ever do that on any occasion?
       A. I cannot recall. To have put that down, I assume at
some stage I must have done.

  Q. If I put to you that it was answered, all answered letters,
whether or not they were about McDonald's and there might
have been some McDonald's ones in there but it certainly
was not just McDonald's letters, would you accept that?
       A. All I can say is that, from whatever I did at that
time, I have put down "answered letters regarding
McDonald's". If I had grabbed out a handful of letters and
they all related to McDonald's, that could be the case.

  Q. Right. What, if you grabbed out a handful to take back to
       your offices?
       A. No, if I looked at a handful. If I took out a handful
       to look at.

  Q. I should have done this in the right order, but I will just
start at the beginning. Where we have got number 2 in
photograph 6, the "three trays hold certain info as above",
sorry, "as shown", one being education enquiries, the other
being "perjury distro", and the tray in the middle holds
incoming letters for Paul, Helen, Stephen, Andrew and
John. Why did you put those names?
       A. I am sorry, I am looking at number 6.

  Q. Yes.
       A. It would have been either visible to me or I would
have gleaned that at some stage, and that is how I would
       have described it.

  Q. They are not on the tray. The tray is not labelled, is it?
       A. I cannot see it labelled, no.

  Q. Are you trying to suggest it was a personal mail tray for
just those five people, or was it basically just a tray
where anything that might be addressed to an individual got
       put?
       A. My notes name those individuals and, for some reason,
