Day 037 - 14 Oct 94 - Page 66

       A. No. I think this is very crude language, Mr. Rampton.

  Q. I know. I am trying to summarise the effect of the book
without reading the whole thing, Mr. Cox.

MS. STEEL: I think that is a bit of a distortion.

MR. MORRIS: Also Dr. Barnard was not ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Forget about Dr. Barnard. Mr. Cox is a
perfectly intelligent witness who can answer the question
for himself and he has already done so.

MR. RAMPTON: Perhaps what the Defendants do not understand and
ought to understand, although I have said it more than
once before in this case, if I am going to make a
suggestion to your Lordship in closing this case that that
is the effect of this book and for that reason Mr. Cox's
overall evidence may not be as reliable as the Defendants
think it is, then I am duty bound to put it to him so he
       can deal with it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: And you are duty bound to put it quite
plainly so there can be no doubt as to what your
       suggestion is.

MS. STEEL: Yes, but there was a reference to Dr. Barnard's
       book as well.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You are perfectly right to make that point,
but I am interested in what Mr. Cox says about his own
view and he has giving his answer to Mr. Rampton's
       question about it.

MR. RAMPTON: Mr. Cox, would you kind kindly turn back to page
36 in the copy pages of the book, your book?
       A. My book, page 36, yes.

  Q. One notices that the book is called the "Real Eating
Encyclopaedia of Vegetarian Living - Everything you wanted
to know but did not know where to ask". Do you see in the
right-hand column on page 36 a heading "Set a Shining
       Example"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. "Says Paul, a lawyer, 'I've watched my stepsons (my wife's
children from a previous marriage) make fairly drastic
changes in their eating habits with no overt pressure to
do so from us. I think this has happened because of two
things Carol (my wife) and I do: First, we set an example
by following a low-fat vegetarian eating style ourselves
and secondly, at every opportunity, we debunk inaccurate
and misleading advertising. For example, if a fast-food
restaurant has a spot on TV about their 'healthy' chicken
sandwich, Carol and/or I will laugh and say something
like, "Yeah, and I bet they've got some Florida swampland
for sale, too". Why is that in this book about nutrition?
       A. It is not a book about nutrition.

  Q. Sorry, it is a book about the virtues of vegetarian
