Day 143 - 27 Jun 95 - Page 66

THE WITNESS: My Lord, that was 116 in the employment area or
116 in general?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 116 in the employment area.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, it is only fair for Mr. Stein to tell him
that that 116 do not all deal with his field, I am bound to
say. Many of them are concerned with this country.

THE WITNESS: I was starting to doubt about finishing Thursday.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, do not worry. See if you can pick a
topic which you can get through in five or 10 minutes,
Mr. Morris, or Ms. Steel can.

MR. MORRIS: Maybe something I was going to ask Mr. Stein at
some stage but I can deal with it now. It is actually
something a bit light-hearted, maybe. I can give him my
original -- it is the book but actually the front cover is
disclosed in that list that we were looking at at No. 2,
our additional employment documents. The book is called
"McDonaldisation of Society" by George Ritzer. Without
giving our secrets away -- can someone tell me if we have
disclosed any pages of this book rather than just the
cover?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, I have just got the cover photocopied.

MR. RAMPTON: Might I indulge Mr. Morris or try to persuade your
Lordship to indulge Mr. Morris' request for an early leave
this evening? It is wholly unsatisfactory (a) to start
quoting from books for all the old reasons which I
have rehearsed over and over again; (b) to do it when
Mr. Morris and the witness are the only people in court who
have copies of the relevant pages -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Look, do not read from the book. Just put
what you want to put.

MR. MORRIS: McDonald's had the book and they were able to make
copies of it.

MR. RAMPTON: I do not believe we have ever had the book. We
have a copy of the front page.

MR. MORRIS: It was given to McDonald's for them to copy, if
they wished. If they did not copy it, that is OK by me,
but -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not make a reference to the book. Put
what you want to put to Mr. Stein.

MR. MORRIS (To the witness): Mr. Stein, McDonald's takes action
to prevent people using the "Mc" symbol, does it not, the
"Mc"?
A. We have trademarks that we protect -- I am not a
trademark expert.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is a bit of a let down at 10 past four to
