  Q. Yes.
       A. That can be a factor, yes, but it is not necessarily.

  Q. Not in every case but it certainly can be a factor in some
       cases?
       A. It would make sense for that conclusion to be made.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, again I do believe that if something is
to be said about Sun Valley in this case, Ms. Steel has to
ask Dr. Pattison whether the stocking density, maximum
stocking density, at Sun Valley leads to an exacerbation of
       leg problems.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is quite important, apart from anything
else, so the witness can answer it. It is probably not a
bad illustration of what we were talking about earlier, but
also so that I can see. If it is suggested that a stocking
density of a maximum of 36.5 kilograms would have some
effect on leg disease, then that should be put and the
extent of the effect should be put as well, because
otherwise these are just loose ends.

I do not know whether it is suggested that a stocking
disease of 36.5 kilos a square metre, whether it is being
suggested that does lead to leg problems and, if so, what
or not. To say a higher stocking density can be a factor
but is not necessarily so may be interesting but I cannot
hang it on any peg in the case.

MS. STEEL: Actually the question I asked was: "It certainly can
be a factor in some cases".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, but I do not know whether it is
suggested that it is at Sun Valley or not.

MS. STEEL: Yes. I had not actually finished what I was asking.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is the point, so I can see where it is
in relation to the allegations against Sun Valley and
       thereby against McDonald's.

MS. STEEL: I am sorry, but I had not finished what I was
       asking.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Very well. I only interrupted to underline
that. I appreciate you may well be going on to deal with
it. It is something of an example of what we were
discussing a few minutes ago. Yes, take your time to get
       going again.

MS. STEEL: Increased activity in the broiler sheds leads to
       stronger legs?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. And the amount of activity that birds indulge in is
influenced by stocking densities, is it not?
       A. Yes, it is. It is influenced by a whole lot of
       factors.

  Q. So the greater the stocking density the less the chickens
