Day 245 - 07 May 96 - Page 43

some time ago, but the going forward was really off the
back of your Aims and Objectives document. It frightened
the heck out of me when I saw the Animal Liberation link
having had a fire bomb in one of our stores and the other
four or five incidents that were there.

  Q. Mr. Preston, you could cut the propaganda.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not say that. If it is part of his
reason, he is entitled to give the answer and you can tell
me later if you argue it is propaganda and not substance,
but he is entitled to give his answer.

MS. STEEL: He is not answering the questions.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think he is.

MS. STEEL: I actually asked: What were the steps that you
       decided to take?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. It is all part of his answer. People do
not necessarily focus on every exact detail which you
       necessarily think of.

MS. STEEL: Mr. Preston, you did not have any evidence
whatsoever to connect London Greenpeace with this so-called
incident that you are referring to, I do not actually know
what it is you are referring to, but you do not have any
evidence whatsoever to connect London Greenpeace with that,
       do you?
       A. I have only what you say in your Aims and Objectives
document where you align yourselves with them. We had had
four or five incendiary device incidents risking the lives
of people, my customers, my employees, that ----

  Q. Mr. Preston, you aware that the Animal Liberation Front has
a policy of non-violence, are you not?
       A. I am sorry, I do not agree with that at all.

  Q. In that case, you do not know.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You must ask questions not give evidence.
You can tell me about that in due course.

MS. STEEL: I think the witness is just trying to avoid
answering the subject and throw a lot of mud in the hope
       that some will stick.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Tell me about that letter, but you must let
       him ----

MS. STEEL: Our witnesses have been told to answer the question
       that they are being asked.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: This is something you raise time and time
again when I tell you to let the witness answer the
question. If you do not like the answer, tell me about that
later but you must let him answer the question.

MS. STEEL: But when Mr. Rampton asks a question which he does
