Day 010 - 11 Jul 94 - Page 74
1 deposited in the adipose tissue of human beings does them
any harm at all?
2 A. I am aware there is scientific research that indicates
there is a wide range of potential effects from small
3 amounts of this chemical in the human body.
4 Q. A certain of amount work has been done with small animals,
rodents mostly, has it not?
5 A. Yes.
6 Q. You know, do you not, how cautious one must be about the
results obtained from animal experimentation?
7 A. I am aware of that.
8 Q. You know, I expect, that the key to many, if not all,
toxicological problems is the level of dosage, amount?
9 A. Repeat the question?
10 Q. One of the underlying principles of toxicology, the
science for telling us what is going to damage us in the
11 environment, is dosage?
A. Dosage is one of the issues, yes.
12
Q. It is one of the fundamental principles of toxicology?
13 A. Actually, I think these areas of studies are generally
referred to as epidemiology.
14
Q. We are not talking about epidemiology. We are talking
15 about experimental work, clinical work. It is from
experimental work that we know that even water in large
16 doses may be toxic, do we not?
A. I think that -----
17
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I put it another way. If you sit in a
18 motor car in a traffic jam Benzyne builds up in the cabin
of the car?
19 A. Yes.
20 Q. You say Benzyne is a carcinogen. That does not mean you
can sit in traffic jam you are going to get cancer. You
21 have to look at dosage as one of the important factors, do
you not, in deciding whether any substance is toxic?
22 A. Well, I agree that you have to look at dosage, yes,
but I also would add that you need to understand the
23 impact, or you need to look at the significance of the
presence of these substances in the body fat; that in the
24 body tissue, in the body cells these reactions may have
very little relationship to specifically the initial
25 dosage or any series of dosages.
26 MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I am going to depart now from styrene
migration and turn to two other topics. I do not believe
27 I can finish them by quarter past 4. I have to call
Professor Duxbury tomorrow morning, as your Lordship
28 knows. Would your Lordship like me to finish now, there
may be some re-examination, I do not know, or would your
29 Lordship like it if Mr. Lipsett can stay overnight so that
I finish it tomorrow sometime?
30
MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think you said Mr. Lipsett could be here
