Day 296 - 07 Nov 96 - Page 40
are not the be all and end all, they do form a useful
backdrop to the assertions that are made in the fact
sheet.

The same Peckham fast food survey said that they gave the
reasons for choosing fast food as -- well, they included
convenience, taste and hunger. And that was day 32, page
26. 9.3 percent of the people ate hamburgers every day.
This is a particularly significant figure, 32 percent of
those coming out of McDonald's ate fast food every day.
And that was on day 32, pages 27 to 29.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a moment, please. (Pause)

MS. STEEL: Dr. Lobstein also referred to the Gordon Simmons
research survey ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a moment, please, because I want
to add to my note earlier. (Pause) So the 31 percent in
grazing in Peckham was of people leaving a McDonald's store
at lunchtime?

MS. STEEL: I think what it is, the 31 percent is of people
leaving any of the outlets and then it is slightly more for
just the ones leaving McDonald's, which is 32 percent. But
that is from memory. Obviously the best thing is to check
the references.

MR JUSTICE BELL: Right. Dr. Lobstein referred to the -----

MS. STEEL: Gordon Simmons research survey in 1987 which showed
that 16 million adults used a McDonald's in the last year,
that was 36 percent of the population, then, and that 26
percent of 16 to 17 year-olds had used a McDonald's in the
previous week. That was on day 32, pages 33, 32 to 33.

Dr. Lobstein said that if McDonald's meals played any
substantial part in the diet they would not provide
essential nutrients, for example, vitamins and minerals,
and obviously the point is that they are excessively
fatty. That was on day 32, page 39. He gave an example
that a child's maximum daily intake of fat as recommended
in the nutritional guidelines is 78 grams. I can't
remember which age group this is for actually, but it is
near that reference that I have just given anyway, and in a
typical McDonald's meal they would be getting 64.4 grams of
fat, so that is the vast majority of their daily maximum
daily intake of fat they are getting from one meal at
McDonald's. They are getting over 80 percent of their
recommended maximum, and it should be remembered, as we
have stated often, that that is not even the figure which
would have the optimum health benefits; that is the maximum
figure which is taking into consideration all the
commercial and other influences.

We consider that the figures, or the amounts of fat, that
are in a typical individual McDonald's meal and how they
compare to, for example, a child's maximum daily intake of
fat, are matters of great concern and they ought to be
matters of concern to a multi-national which is thriving on
