Day 245 - 07 May 96 - Page 69

Do you assume that everyone is going to believe what you
say as soon as you say it?
A. No.

Q. As Mr. Morris has said, you are aware that there is plenty
of contrary statements in this case, that we have got 65,
70 witnesses, experts on nutrition, experts on rainforests,
experts on advertising, ex-employees, who are all saying
that basically the criticisms are justified?
A. That is a matter for his Lordship. He has to sort that
out.

Q. Yes, but are you seriously saying that we are putting
forward all these people who confirm their belief that what
the leaflet is saying is true and yet we think that it is a
pack of lies?
A. I believe you know what is in that leaflet is not true.

Q. You have got absolutely no basis for that at all, have
you?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We are going over the same ground here
really. I am not stopping you because I am suggesting you
do not have an argument. It is argument. Once Mr. Preston
has given his answers for better or worse it becomes
argument.

MS. STEEL: Can you think of any reason why we would want to
spend five years of our lives, over 2 years in court
virtually every day, and certainly the case has taken up
virtually every day of our lives, defending something that
we thought was a pack of lies?
A. I cannot answer for you.

Q. No, because it is a load of rubbish. Can I just go through
your statement and just pick up on a few points that
I wanted to ask about.

In the first paragraph, you say you have seen some of the
literature circulated by the Defendants, by London
Greenpeace and the McLibel Support Campaign both before and
during the trial. Which particular leaflets have you seen
which you know were distributed by us?
A. Well, I know that the appendices 1 I am sure you were
involved with, the background aims and ideals of the
organisation.

Q. Can I just stop you. To save time, can you not give any
evidence about things that you suppose. Can you only give
evidence about things that you know we personally did.
A. Well, if I ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, hold on, I am not sure that is right.
If you are just asking what he personally knows from his
own direct observation then that is one thing.

MS. STEEL: I am asking that, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You have to appreciate that is only part of
