Day 039 - 20 Oct 94 - Page 49

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which page again?

THE WITNESS: The first page of that paper, page 137.

MR. MORRIS: The last sentence of the summary seems to be the
main conclusion.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What is the ADI? .5 milligrams or has it
gone down since then? JECFA in 1989 set an ADI of 0.5
milligrams of kilogram body weight and deleted the
temporary qualification, you say. What do we have here in
this one?
A. 100 milligrams per kilogram was the dose given by
stomach tube in the mice, but it is relatively brief -- the
duration of this test is rather brief -- in that the
acceptable daily intake is usually calculated over the
entire lifetime of the animal, but, if I have understood
this correctly, this was a relatively short-term study.

MR. MORRIS: Less than 10 days or something.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What are you looking for now?
A. I am just trying to establish the length of duration of
the study in which these tumours arose.

Q. If we look at the bottom of page 137 and the top of page
138, we have it, have we not? There is the initial showing
and then on days two to four?
A. Proliferation of cells. So, while the dose is
relatively high by comparison with the ADI, it is a very
short duration exposure.

Q. You say "relatively high", they describe it as large doses,
do they not?
A. Yes, over short times.

Q. The one follows the other; since the lesions appear very
quickly ---
A. Indeed.

Q. -- it is over a short period of time?
A. Indeed, yes.

Q. Then it says: "All these lung lesions are apparently fully
reversible". Does it show how long they went on for?
A. It is quite a long time since I read this paper in
great detail and I cannot instantly put my finger on the
duration.

Q. There has to be a limit to how much time we can spend in
court with the witness actually reading the papers to try
and find what the answer is.

MR. MORRIS: Yes. I was referring to the summary mainly for
guidance there. The one behind that, did you want to refer
to that one? I do not think you did; Peraino?
A. Peraino, that simply provides some evidence that BHT
may be a tumour promoter.
