Day 277 - 10 Jul 96 - Page 49
MR. RAMPTON: I am not sure we can.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It has got the same registration number.

MR. RAMPTON: Yes, my Lord, I can see the front--

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, that is quite right. Yes. Just coming
and going. That is quite right, yes.

MR. RAMPTON: Then turn over the page, please, Miss Steel to
photograph 9?
A. Yes.

Q. This is a slightly different message but ultimately it may
be the same placard saying "Save the forests, smash
McDonald's"; is that right?
A. Yes.

Q. Now, there you are at the head of that procession. It was
a protest march, presumably, against the proceedings in
this case in large part was it not?
A. It was a protest march against McDonald's and their
attempts to silence their critics.

Q. And do you disassociate yourself from the sentiment "smash
McDonald's"?
A. I would like to see a world without multinationals, and
that includes McDonald's.

Q. Now, I would like to turn, if I may please, to some of the
meetings that you attended in 1989 and 1990. For that
purpose you will need the--

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you have a problem with the suggestion
which Mr. Rampton has put to you on a number of occasions
about smashing McDonald's?
A. I think--

Q. Are you agreeing you would like to see a world without
multinationals, including McDonald's; what is the
distinction in your mind?
A. I think it is because I have just got this feeling that
Mr. Rampton is going to try and make out that it means some
kind of violent activity that is all, whereas that is not
what it means.

MR. RAMPTON: No, I am not suggesting that, my Lord, never
have. No need to be afraid of that, Miss Steel. I take
'smash' to be used in its metaphorical sense, destroy,
remove from the surface of the world so that it no longer
exists as a successful multinational company?
A. I would like McDonald's to be removed from the surface
of the earth in common with all multinationals which are
exploiting the earth, causing it damage, exploiting the
people that live on it, murdering animals, and so on.

Q. And you really would not--
A. Because I would like to see a world without
exploitation and oppression.
