Day 032 - 06 Oct 94 - Page 29

fastfood every day. Looking at the age distribution,
there is a slight increase amongst those aged 16 to 19 to
be eating once a day and those aged 20 to 34 compared with
those older, 35 to 60. I would say there was little
difference in the occupational profiles. The table
"belief of manufacturer" refers to a question asked about
the respondents' views on whether the manufacturer -- if I
       can read out the question?

  Q. Is it No. 7?
       A. Yes, question 7 asked of the respondent: "If the food
manufacturer told you that the food you have just bought
is good for you, would you believe them?" There was a
slight tendency for those who ate fastfood once a day to
say "yes" compared with those overall. But, nonetheless,
the vast majority of all those said they would not believe
       them.

  Q. That was 76 per cent of those consumers eating every day
said they would not believe them and overall ----?
       A. Yes, slightly fewer than those overall.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That might not well be of any statistical
       importance.
       A. No, I do not think it makes much odds. Of more
interest is the yes's versus no's, which is that the vast
majority would not believe literature from a manufacturer.

  Q. That is pretty consistent with what they thought of the
quality of their food in the earlier table, is it not?
       A. I am afraid so, yes.

MR. RAMPTON: Your Lordship might like to look at the bottom of
page 28? It is only a small number of respondents.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It just shows you must never underestimate
       the great British public!

MS. STEEL: I do not know whether there is anything else you
       feel is important?
       A. No. As I say, the main purpose was to discover
whether there were cases and, if so, whether they were
just the odd one or two or whether a fairly significant
number who might be increasing their risk to their health
through eating a diet that we feared might not be as
       healthy as it could be.

  Q. Just turning to page -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What are the actual numbers on page 28?
       A. I suspect that is the respondent number for the coding
       list.

  Q. I have misunderstood it when I made my last comment. On
the answer, the person whose questionnaire was numbered
No. 45 when the answer was taken?
       A. Yes, it allowed us to refer back if we needed to.

  Q. I take back what I said because it was not 296 who gave
the answer at the bottom of the page; it was one
