Day 127 - 23 May 95 - Page 48
turn to file XI which, Mrs. Barnes, contains for the most
part copies of a crew handbook for different years starting
in 1986 and running through to 1992. Can I ask you to look
at tab 3 which is the Crew Handbook for 1989 which came out
in June of that year? Turn, please, to page 164 which is
the section on health and safety. Again, I am not going to
read it out. I will read the first paragraph, if I may.

"McDonald's considers the prevention of accidents and
property damage to be of the utmost importance for the
well-being of its employees, customers and visitors and for
the production of efficiency of its operations. To ensure
the continued good health and safety of all, please read
carefully these extracts from the Company Health and Safety
policy. We all have a responsibility to make each
McDonald's restaurant a safe and healthy environment."
First question, so for as you are concern are those just
fine words?
A. I think they signify a commitment towards safety.

Q. I said are they just fine words?
A. No, they would not be. That would not just be written
for the sake of writing it.

Q. How far do you in the discharge of your job try to embrace
or discharge those statements of principle?
A. Well, certainly our department obviously is purely
focused on health and safety, but the way we would bring
that into any contact with our operations people who
obviously are the ones that are closest to the
restaurant ----

Q. My questions perhaps this afternoon are not as good as they
ought to be. What I am really asking you is, do you are
personally regard the well-being of your employees as of
the utmost importance?
A. Definitely.

Q. Why?
A. Without them I certainly -- without my people in my
department I could not function and without the people we
have in operations and at the store levels there just would
not be a McDonald's. They are what make the Company the
Company.

Q. Second question about this, this is a Crew Handbook. It
says, "Please read carefully these extracts from the
Company's Health and Safety policy." Where does a crew
member have access to the Crew Handbook?
A. They are each given one when they join the Company.

Q. Are they encouraged to read it?
A. Yes, and then they are taken through the different
sections of orientation.

Q. Is there a specific part of their induction into the
Company which is called "orientation"?
A. That is correct, yes.

Q. How long does that last?
