Day 014 - 20 Jul 94 - Page 65
1 McDonald's can be part of a healthy lifestyle. They are
based on the average calorie allowances for a 16-year old
2 male (3,000 calories) and 46 year-old female (15000),
according to the National Research Council. The meal plans
3 are consistent with current US dietary guidelines
including the recommendation that fat be limited to 30 per
4 cent of total calories". We remind ourselves that in this
country it is a bit higher, it is 33 or 35?
5 A. That is right.
6 Q. "and that saturated fat be limited to 10 per cent of total
calories." Here we are about the same on saturated fat?
7 A. Yes.
8 Q. "As you can see, calorie needs can vary considerably
depending on upon age, height, weight, gender and
9 activity", is that a correct statement?
A. Yes.
10
Q. I would like you to look at the table (which for the
11 people with the files is page 65) and I hope everybody now
has an legible copy. I will not read them out. I will
12 describe how they are arranged. I know you can see that
but the tape recorder cannot. The days of the week are
13 along the top?
A. Yes.
14
Q. This is the weekly menu, suggested balanced diet menu for
15 a 16 year-old male whose calorie requirement is 3,000
calories daily. Within the menus the items in bold are
16 those which are served or may be obtained at McDonald's
restaurants, right?
17 A. Yes.
18 Q. Beneath each day of the week you get breakfast, lunch
dinner and a snack, do you not?
19 A. Yes.
20 Q. What I want you to do -- I do not want to have to read
them out -- below that there is the same arrangement for a
21 46 year-old female with a calorie requirement of 1500 a
day, yes?
22 A. Yes.
23 Q. In America at least a 16 year-old male seems to require
twice as many calories daily as a 46 year-old female. Do
24 you think that would be reflected on these shores or not?
A. It probably would not be too far different.
25
Q. A 16 year-old might be expected to be fairly active?
26 A. Yes, I think so.
27 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I suppose they are optima in a way. You
have a healthy, vigorous, growing boy on the other hand
28 and a woman in her middle years who might be anxious not
to take on board too many calories?
29 A. I think so, yes. I think the figures are reasonable.
30 MR. RAMPTON: One can take it that that 46 year-old female's
children, if she had them, have probably left home or
