Day 269 - 25 Jun 96 - Page 20
tried to say they have no important --

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I just need to know because there is a long
list of elements there.
A. Yes.

Q. I need to know whether they are important nutrients or
not. That is all.
A. One of the interesting things about it, my Lord, if I
can just slightly amplify it, is that you do find a lot of
these B vitamins, for argument's sake, tend to go together
in the food chain, but I think, you know, I stand by what I
said, that McDonald's meats do provide nutrients, there is
no question about it. The only point I was trying to make
was that you can obtain those same nutrients without having
the high saturated fat load.

MR. MORRIS: Compared to the meals that you have compared them
to, are McDonald's high or low in the important nutrients?
A. Yes, I --

Q. You can see the figures?
A. Well, to be honest with you, I was not trying to make a
point about this. I was really trying to make the very
simple point that you can obtain the same nutrients from
other food sources which --

Q. But if we look at your chart, it is clear that virtually
all the figures for the other meals, apart from McDonald's
meals, are greater in the nutrients than -- for virtually
all of those nutrients, they are higher?
A. Yes.

Q. In the non-McDonald's meals?
A. Yes.

Q. Sometimes very substantially higher?
A. Yes. I mean, you can -- if you use the actual
products, you can do that.

MS. STEEL: For example, in the vitamin A in the McDonald's meal
there is 37.9 ug whereas in the homemade meal there is 413
ug?
A. I think that is a mistake. That is 41.3.

Q. Is it?
A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: But, in any event, you have not set out in
this exercise - it is not to stop Miss Steel or Mr. Morris
asking you if it is important - you have not set out to
demonstrate that they are low in the nutrients set out
there, full stop?
A. No.

Q. You have just done a comparison with a homemade meal
instead?
A. Yes. I am just saying that you can get these same
nutrients from homemade products without jeopardising the
nutrient value and, as Mr. Morris has said, in some cases
