advocating seven years retention.

Q. These records that are kept on the payroll, the reasons for
leaving, just the short one you have referred to, would
that include probationers, people who only stayed for three
weeks?
A. I do not know. I really do not know. I think in
stores they would not keep probationers' files. They would
probably just -- once the probationer has been found to be
unsatisfactory, just get rid of them. I cannot answer
insofar as payroll is concerned.

MR. MORRIS: In the coding for reasons for leaving in the
payroll, how many different codes are there? There are 20
different codes?
A. I cannot remember. I think it was about 14.

Q. 14?
A. The same 14 codes are used for staff and the personnel
department keep it for staff, reasons for leaving, and
I seem to remember -- I am not going to say that is the
number, but I think it is round about 14. I do not know
what the codes are. I cannot remember them now.

Q. Right. That is when you do your interviews, when a staff
member or a crew member leaves ---
A. Exits the interview.

Q. -- the interview, and that is where some box will be ticked
on the reasons for leaving, or something, and that is what
gets onto the computer?
A. Yes.

Q. What about if someone is dismissed, that presumably is----
A. There is a number, and that indicates they have been
dismissed.

Q. But are there similar codes for reasons for dismissal,
whether it was dishonesty or whether it was lateness or
whatever?
A. I do not think so. There may be. A person who could
probably help on this more than I can is Lynne Mead, and
she is coming to give evidence.

Q. Right. If someone applies for a job and they used to work
at McDonald's the Company provides references, does it not?
A. Yes.

Q. To a new employer?
A. Yes.

Q. Are the references written immediately after an employee
leaves? You do a standard reference, do you, for that
employee?
A. No, I do not think so. I think you respond to
enquiries.

Q. Right. So you have a record of the employee's general,
whatever; I do not know what you call it really --
general----
