Day 014 - 20 Jul 94 - Page 70

1 Q. I have tried to select one which is neither excessively
calorific nor excessively uncalorific, if you take my
2 meaning. I have tried as between figures for fibre and
figures for sodium to select one which is somewhere near
3 the mean. Ditto for the fat content. I have chosen a
meal which I take to be -- you will correct me if I am
4 wrong -- a relatively average -- that is not English but
you know what I mean -- McDonald's meal, that is,
5 cheeseburgers, regular french fries, Diet Coke and apple
pie. From your McDonald's business, is that a fair choice
     6 to have made?
              A. I would think so, yes.
     7
         Q. We could do it for every one of the five meals in the
8 table, but that would take a very long time. Am I right
that 48.5 per cent of 759 calories is 3068 calories?
9 A. It sounds about right.

    10 Q. Am I right that 368 calories is 11.92 per cent of 3,087.5
              calories?
11 A. Again it sounds about right.

12 Q. Am I right, therefore, that for total fat that meal gives
that 25 year-old, that hypothetical 25 year-old with PA of
13 1.7, 11.92 per cent of his DRV of total fat for the day?
              A. Yes, 11.9 per cent of his energy.
    14
         Q. Sorry, of his energy requirement for the day?
    15 A. Yes.

16 Q. That his DRV, his advised amount -- sorry, percentage of
fat as a contribution to that EAR is 33 per cent?
    17 A. Yes.

    18 Q. Or 35 per cent?
              A. Yes.
    19
         Q. We will assume that the 25 year-old drinks the odd pint of
20 lager, so we may use 33 per cent?
              A. Yes.
    21
         Q. That is for a day, is it not?
    22 A. It is, yes.

23 Q. So he is getting just over a third of his DRV of total fat
              from this McDonald's meal?
    24 A. That is right.

    25 Q. For that day?
              A. That is right.
    26
         Q. Can we look at saturated fat? Is 23.6 per cent of 759
    27 calories, 179 calories?
              A. That is about right.
    28
         Q. And is 179 calories, 5.8 per cent of 3,807.5 calories?
29 A. Yes, again it is about right.

30 Q. We remember that his DRV of energy in the form of
saturated fat is 10 or 11 per cent?
