Day 021 - 29 Jul 94 - Page 50

     1 Q. The headline.

2 MR. JUSTICE BELL: The headline against the table IV.
              A. Yes, sorry.
     3
MS. STEEL: Again, you mention the protective effects of
4 vitamins C and E present in fresh fruit and vegetables.
Going on to the last column on that page, the second
5 paragraph, halfway down that paragraph: "As a general
rule, diets which are high in plant foods" -----
     6 A. Sorry, which paragraph.

7 MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you look under table IV ---
              A. Yes.
     8
         Q. -- the first complete paragraphs which starts: "The
9 possibility of an adverse effect".
              A. Yes.
    10
MS. STEEL: "As a general rule, diets which are high in plant
11 foods are associated with a low risk of most cancers,
including stomach cancer, provided the consumption of
12 salted, pickled and smoked foods is low."

13 Then right underneath that you say: "Hence, we have now
reached the point where we can be very confident that diet
14 is the primary factor in the development of most of the
degenerative diseases that are the major public health
15 problem in many industrialised countries. This means that
dietary change must be a central feature of any policy
16 designed to achieve improvements in public health."

17 Would you agree with that?
              A. Yes.
    18
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you remember when you wrote this
19 article? I see that it is an issue of the British Food
Journal in 1992, but can you remember when you wrote it,
    20 Professor Wheelock?
              A. I think that would have been written about the end of
21 1991. It was after the green paper on the Health of the
Nation was released, which was in July 1991, so it was
22 either the end of 1991 or the beginning of 1992.

23 MS. STEEL: I think that is it. I think we have finished.

    24 Re-examined by MR. RAMPTON

25 Q. Keep that paper with you for the moment, please, Professor
Wheelock. Do you have a page 6 there, a four column page,
26 left-hand column, halfway down, we see the heading
              "Cancers", do we not?
    27 A. Yes.

28 Q. You wrote this, as it were, three years ago, a bit less
              than three years ago?
    29 A. Yes.

    30 Q. Do you see a passage -----
