Day 091 - 17 Feb 95 - Page 32

  Q. Is it Cotrimoxole?
       A. Cotrimoxole, yes. That contains Trimethoprim and
I think it contains a different sulphur drug to the one we
use, so there is a slight difference.

  Q. You are aware of concern being expressed about the use of
that in the broiler industry having some effect on the
       resistance in humans ---
       A. I am not aware.

  Q. -- of the bacteria?
       A. I am not aware of any concern that has ever been raised
about the use of that antibiotic in the broiler industry in
relation to human beings. I obviously would be concerned
of any evidence to suggest that there is bacterial
resistance in certain antibiotics. That is something we
have to be very aware of.

  Q. Could you get down the Defendants new documents, the latest
list. I think it is on the far right of the blue bundles.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I think Ms. Steel means the Defendants'
Supplementary List of Documents, bundle V.

MS. STEEL: That is right. (To the witness): Could you turn
to document 2, page 11, please? Could you just read that,
       please?
       A. OK.

  Q. Is that the salmonella that you were referring to, or do
       you not know?
       A. The one that they are referring to here is the
Staphylococcal antibiotic which has been found to be a
major problem of some operating theatres in hospitals, and
is a very difficult organism to control, and one that has
shown multiple antibiotic resistance. The one where they
are referring to farming, they do not actually mention
about a bacterium, so I am not sure what they are referring
       to.

  Q. I just realised I said page 11, I should have said page 12.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Have you got the right page?
       A. I have page 12 now.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Read page 11. The same point may crop up
       there, but read 11.
       A. OK.

  Q. Before Ms. Steel asks you another question, is the problem
referred to, or alleged in the penultimate paragraph, the
one you just referred to, the operating theatre problem on
       page 11?
       A. Yes, that was the one I was referring to. That is very
specifically a human operating type theatre hospital
       situation.

MS. STEEL: You have not heard of any concerns in relation to
that then, in relation to feeding antibiotics in to
