Day 208 - 24 Jan 96 - Page 70

you look, like filtering equipment, when you do the
filters, it has all the things you need. So I would say
I am not really sure what is (inaudible), so I never ever
see these things. These are like double Dutch to me, so
far as I know, because filtering -- what is it, filtering
training, I have been in charge of that for the last year,
so I would say I should be up to date. I do not know when
it was done. So that I would know now, but then I did not
       know.

  Q. So, health and safety may not always have been a high
       priority, you would accept, then?
       A. Perhaps a while back. But, as I say, since I last did
the training, I did the filtering slips and I am in charge
of filtering equipment, which I think is probably the most
dangerous thing in the store, the filter. So I would say,
yes, we do try our best to keep the safety standards up.

  Q. You have done since you have taken charge of it?
       A. Yes -- in charge of it. I cannot really comment
before, because I have never even seen these things, so
I never ever look at these.

  Q. You were in court when Mr. Cox was giving evidence, and you
heard him say about running in the counter area?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Have you seen that?
       A. I have seen the odd person running, yes.

  Q. In your performance reviews, you have been asked to make
       people hustle more?
       A. Yes.

  Q. You are not making them work as hard, as far as other
       Managers then?
       A. When they are running, they are -- when people are
       running on till, they are told not to, in my experience;
they are told to stop running.

  Q. But you were encouraged to tell people to run?
       A. I was.

  Q. If you say so -----
       A. But if I was encouraged to, if I was told to, obviously
I was not getting them to work as fast as they could.

  Q. You do not think they were slacking around when you were in
       charge?
       A. Not that I know of, no.

  Q. Right. OK. I do not think I have anything else.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you.

MR. MORRIS: No further questions. ^^

                    Re-examined by MR. RAMPTON Q.C.

MR. RAMPTON: Just a couple of things. One subject I was not
