Day 159 - 20 Jul 95 - Page 34

  Q. So far as you could tell, have they seemed to be happy in
       their work?
       A. Yes, the majority of them, I would say.

  Q. I suppose from time to time you get people who do not fit
the job or do not seem to be happy with what they are
       doing, do you?
       A. Oh, yes, yes, there are times.

  Q. What usually happens to them? Do they stay and grumble or
       do they tend to leave?
       A. Well, it is only because in their three weeks, you
know, basics training you get, they are quite good at it
but once they have done that training, they show their
what, as you say, their true faces, like they do not want
to do anything. They can do it, but they do not want to,
you know. They do not act as fast as, like, when they were
first on their initial training, like. That is what
       I found.

MR. MORRIS: Sorry, I just want to get that down.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, just pause a minute.

MR. RAMPTON: Thank you very much, Mrs. Farrer. Would you
       remain there, please?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. We will take our break now. How long
       do you want, Mr. Morris?

MR. MORRIS: About 10 minutes would be helpful.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Listen, as far as cross-examining about
Mr. Magee is concerned, as far as I am concerned, you can
ask Mrs. Farrer anything you want about Mr. Magee or his
statement. You only need ask her, in my view, about what
she said about campaign to run a union which was the one
specific matter which might relate to Mr. Magee which
Mrs. Farrer spoke of. Anything else you want to raise is
       entirely up to you.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, can I say that I entirely accept that.
I will take it that Mrs. Farrer's evidence, that when she
had read the statement she thought, in effect, that it was
a tissue of lies, will be challenged by a reference to
Mr. Magee's statement without the Defendants having to put
it in cross-examination unless they want to.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. But, anyway, I do not propose to say
any more than that, from my point of view, all you need to
put, challenge, if you choose, is anything about a union
campaign because that is the only specific matter with
which Mrs. Farrer took issue or was invited to take issue.
I will come back in 10 minutes.

MS. STEEL: So it is treated as though she is not saying that
the rest of it is lies?

  MR. RAMPTON: No, no.
