Day 116 - 26 Apr 95 - Page 29
victimized in relation to scheduling or refusal of days
off, that kind of thing, what could the employee do about
it?
A. It depends upon which Manager it was that was being
inflexible, but the crew person could complain to the next
senior manager within the restaurant. If it was the
Restaurant Manager, he could make his complaint, or she
make their complaint, known to the Supervisors. The
Supervisors used to visit every store two or thee times a
week.

Q. If you turn to page 151, this is in the same Crew Handbook
for the same year, 1989, you see a section headed
"Communications"?
A. Yes.

Q. 151. "Communications", you see that?
A. Yes.

Q. It says, first of all, "Crew Meetings". I will, if you do
not mind, take these as a bunch because I do not want to
have to come back to them. "Communications. Crew
Meetings. About once every other month (or more frequently
if necessary) your Manager will hold a Crew Meeting. These
meetings are held to discuss policy, procedures, products
and problems in the restaurant. You are required to attend
and will be paid for your time".
A. Yes.

Q. Is that honoured, as a matter of practice, or not?
A. Yes, it is.

Q. Monthly crew meetings?
A. Every over month, it says.

Q. That applies to all members of the crew, does it?
A. Yes, it does.

Q. Have you attended in any of those crew meetings?
A. Many.

Q. You have?
A. Yes, indeed.

Q. Give us a thumbnail sketch of a typical crew meeting. Put
into the picture, if you will, some people who might be, if
your Lordship will forgive me, a "bit pissed off" with the
way they are being treated?
A. Well, first of all, you have to look at the next
paragraph, Rap Sessions, because this system would begin
with the rap session. The rap session is attended by
representatives of crew. They put themselves forward to
attend the rap session, and the rap session would be held
by a Supervisor not in the chain of command above that
restaurant. So, the Supervisor will come in from outside.

They go through with the crew people the way the restaurant
is being run, its equipment, the conditions, and then their
conditions of service, and then they will discuss the
individual members of the management team of the
