Day 266 - 20 Jun 96 - Page 57
preserved foods is consistent with a low risk of many of
the current major cancers, including cancer of the colon,
prostate, breast, stomach, lung and oesophagus." Would you
generally agree with that kind of conclusion?
A. Yes. In terms of looking at the results there and
interpreting it so that the public would understand it, I
think that explains it quite well in terms of, you know,
how an average person would interpret the results, yes.

MS. STEEL: So is that consistent with the advice that your
department and so on would give out to the public?
A. As part of health promotion we would recommend a low
fat diet in order to protect from certain cancers, and
those cancers would be the ones whether there is a clear
link between diet and cancer and you can see those ones
with the stars there. Breast, colon, prostate and rectum.
You can see the stars. Those are the ones where a decrease
in fat is clear clearly related to the incidence of
disease. So for those particular cancers, yes.

MR. MORRIS: Right. The last question. Mr. Rampton is talking
about the possibility of eating a meal once a week at
McDonald's and you said you had concerns even about that.
Would you have any -- what would be your concern if,
according to the figures that we have been given, something
like 23 per cent of all the meals sold by McDonald's in the
USA are going to people that are eating there four or more
times a week? What would you comment about that?
Something like a quarter of all their custom is to people
who are eating there four or more times a weak?
A. I would be very, very worried about the health of
those people in the long term.

Q. Thank you very much.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, thank you. Thank you Mrs. Brophy.
Leave everything there, except if it is yours.

MS. STEEL: If you could bring the green leaflet down. That is
mine.
A. I think these are your copies as well.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Take those out of the witness box?
A. Thank you. (The witness withdrew).

MS. STEEL: I have just remembered. We have got something
really important to raise about next week and I have
completely forgotten about it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: About next week?

MS. STEEL: About next week. It is just that we have been given
a date for the Appeal next week and it is on Thursday.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Right. Have you got leave to Appeal?

MS. STEEL: Well, it is going to be heard together. The leave
application is going to be followed--

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, can I--
