Day 124 - 10 May 95 - Page 21
I gave you the policy that we had, that was the policy that
we had for restaurants, the franchisee that I worked for.
At the time I worked for a franchisee, that was his
policy. I cannot speak to what the policy of the
Corporation was at that time. I think it is really
stretching it to characterise things the way you just did.

MR. MORRIS: It might be a good time to break.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will have the five-minute break now.

(Short Adjournment)

MS. STEEL: I wanted to ask a couple more questions on lie
detector tests: When you were carrying out the tests, how
long did they usually last for?
A. I would say 20 minutes maybe. Sometimes they would go
longer than that if the interviewee had some problems.

Q. What kind of things did you ask them about?
A. We did not -- when I say "we", management did not
conduct the tests. Normally an outside agency conducted
the test. They were trained in the application of those
tests. We were usually not present in the room when the
tests were given. So, when a test was given the store
manager, assistant manager, supervisor, franchisee was not
present. We got the results of the test. A summary was
given to us after the tests. So we were not there, or were
not present. With regard to some of the questions, you
know, we had an idea what some of the questions would be.
For instance, if we suspected a particular employee of
absconding with the receipts of a day, we would ask, there
would be questions on the exam pertaining to the taking of
money: "Have you ever taken any money before? Did you
ever take any money from McDonald's?" That kind of thing.

Q. So you gave some kind of instructions to the firm that was
actually carrying out the test on what kind of things you
wanted them to ask about?
A. Some instructions. You know, for instance, if a test
was being conducted on employees that were suspected of
dishonesty, then we would provide the interviewer
information about what was missing, or what we were
concerned about. It was their responsibility to ask
whatever questions that they needed to ask to get to arrive
at a conclusion on that matter.

Q. In the case of, say -- I do not know -- you mentioned
till receipts or something going missing; in the case of
something like that, did you call in the whole crew and
they all got a lie detector test, or was it just specific
people?
A. No, to my knowledge that never happened. It could have
happened in some cases, but that very rarely would be the
case.

Q. Did you ever sit in on any of these lie detector tests?
A. You could not.

Q. It is just that when you answered that initially you said
