Day 001 - 28 Jun 94 - Page 16

"McDollars, McDeath, McCancer, McWaste, McHunger". Then
2 we see Miss Steel again, my Lord, in photograph 15 on page
8. She is at the left-hand side of the picture. She is
3 still holding up the "London Greenpeace" banner, still
wearing the same clothes, of course, because it is the
4 same day.
5 Her next appearance is on page 9, photograph 17, still in
the same position. Slightly to the right of the picture
6 one notices the banner: "Save the rainforest, boycott a
burger" with a crude map of South America with "Brazil"
7 written on it.
8 Then, my Lord, photograph 25, on page 13, this time --
there may be some uncertainty about it, but this time it
9 looks as though it is a back view of Miss Steel. She is
cut in half by the crude map of Brazil on the banner.
10 Then, finally, photograph 26: At the top of page 14 she is
standing next to the young man in the red anorak in the
11 middle of the picture, or nearly in the middle of the
picture, to the left of the tree; again it is a half back
12 view.
13 My Lord, Mr. Morris was not present on that occasion. In
addition to what your Lordship's sees there, Miss Steel
14 was actually observed by McDonald's personnel (who will be
giving evidence) handing out copies of this leaflet to
15 passers-by. Interestingly enough for the purpose of this
case, on oath in answer to interrogatories she says she
16 cannot remember whether she did or not.
17 My Lord, in the light of what had happened on that
occasion and, in particular, of the widespread publicity
18 which had -- I use the word "coincided" as being neutral
-- coincided with this event and presuming it coincided
19 with it and followed it, the plaintiffs resolved they must
try to put a stop to it, and to that end to find out for
20 sure precisely who was responsible for the activities of
London Greenpeace.
21
In consequence, the English McDonald's -- UK McDonald's
22 I should call them -- with the approval of the American
McDonald's, the parent corporation, did the only thing
23 they could to try to stop the rot, stem the flow of
poison, which was to instruct two separate firms of
24 enquiry agents to investigate the matter. May I tell your
Lordship shortly what happened next, what the enquiry
25 agent discovered?
26 During late 1989, after this demonstration, and during
1990, employees of the two firms of enquiry agents
27 attended meetings of the London Greenpeace group. Those
meetings appeared to have been open to anyone who wished
28 to attend. The addresses at which those meetings were
held were in London were, 5 Caledonian Road (which is the
29 address on the leaflet), and another address, I think it
is in Soho, 6 Endsleigh Street, WC1.
30
My Lord, what the investigators found was as follows:
