Day 006 - 05 Jul 94 - Page 72

1 Q. Again he want to the store; he attended with Ron Laurie of
              the security department?
     2 A. Yes.

3 Q. He addressed the crew saying that they had every right to
              join a union?
     4 A. Yes.

5 Q. And McDonald's could not attempt to stop them, but
preferred to negotiate direct with staff and then nothing
6 further happened. So, again, around this period we have
the top person in the company, this time with the head of
     7 security?
              A. I do not know he was head of security.
     8
         Q. Talking to crew members?
9 A. He was a security department member.

10 Q. I do not know if he was a security member or not?
              A. I am sure he is not, but go ahead.
    11
         Q. Do you not think that Mr. Nicholson is -- sorry.
    12 A. Is what?

13 Q. Do you not think again this is an unwise use of resources,
that the head of department -- say there were 20 or 30
    14 staff?
              A. No, I do not think it is an unwise use of resources.
15 I think it is for the head of department to decide how he
uses his time and the time of the people who work for
16 him. That is his choice. If come performance review time
Mr. Nicholson and I have an issue about: "While you were
17 doing this, you did not do that or the following", that is
when it comes into play. It does not come into play
18 here. It is for him to administer his time out of his
              department -- not mine.
    19
         Q. So you would not have been critical of that?
20 A. No. I would encourage him to get involved in whatever
he thinks it is necessary to get involved in, educate and
21 train his people and make the necessary choices
commensurate with the responsibility he carries.
    22
         Q. Do you think it is a necessary part of his job, then, that
23 whenever people think of joining a union he goes down
there straightaway to see what is going on?
24 A. That is a matter purely for him and the administration
              of his department.
    25
         Q. But you would sanction that activity from your head of
    26 personnel?
              A. That is his choice.
    27
         Q. What effect do you think it had on these crew members?
28 A. Ask them. I have no idea.

29 Q. When a head of department is coming or even a regional
official is coming, say, for example, to check up on
30 safety procedures, do people take that very seriously in a
              store?
