Day 295 - 06 Nov 96 - Page 28

       That is page 31.

And he said on page 37: The instruction in Europe at the
moment, certainly in this country, is that the
manufacturers of Furazoldone must provide residue limits by
July 1995 if that compound is going to become fully
registered. It is allowed to be used in the meantime. And
I asked him: Is it not right a United Nations World Health
Organisation Committee in 1992 said it could not set a safe
level of residues of this drug in animals. Answer: That
       is correct.

Ms. Steel asked him on page 36: The drug is strongly
linked with cancer, is it not? And he said that the
recommendation from the veterinary medicines directorate
came out 9 or 12 months ago, some concerns had been
expressed on the safety of Furazoldone from a health and
safety point of view for the mill workers in the feed mill
       handling the compounds.

Then he says, basically in the industry there is a general
feeling that the product should not be used, which is why
they stopped using it, all on page 36. Then he agrees it
was banned by the US Food and Drug Administration in 1991,
followed by bans in Canada, Australia and Germany. He said
the authorities took the decision to ban the use of that
compound for all sorts of health and safety reasons. So
       that is Furazoldone.

He does say on page 35, about antibiotic growth promoters
they use at Sun Valley. He said on line 9: The ones that
refer to that were used are zinc, bacitracin, Virginia
Mycin or Avoparcin. Avoparcin, I think we pleaded, had
been banned in Denmark by July 1995, because of concerns,
       human health concerns.

Regarding Dr. Long, some references that may be worth -- I
know you are going to go through it, but just to say I have
some notes on some references. I will not even say what
the subject is, but if I just give you the -- it obviously
relates to this issue. Production diseases, day 113, page
       42. Antibiotic residues, day 113, page 38 and page 41, and
       114, page 31. Hormone residues, day 113, page 39.
Pesticide residues, day 115, page 34. And he said that
they are also ingested and can be passed on to humans. I
have here in brackets, see also 113, page 40.
In fact, the whole of the section of day 114, pages 38 to
44, deal with some of those issues, and day 115, pages 17
       to 19. (Pause)

I have got a reference here, I think it is from Dr.
Pattison, day 90, page 42, where he says: The growth
promoters, we do vary the growth promoters, the ones
normally used is zinc bacitracin or Virginia Mycin or
Avoparcin. So that is recognising that they are used as
       growth promoters.

Now, I have got some more references here. I cannot
remember if I gave the references when I referred to
Mr. Beavers' evidence. He was questioned about food
