Day 021 - 29 Jul 94 - Page 68

1 there are bad vegetarian diets as well as good vegetarian
              diets.
     2
         Q. Are you going to rely on that as part of your evidence?
     3 A. I have done.

4 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Are you saying whichever line you take with
regard to your own preferred diet that balance is
     5 necessary?
              A. Yes. I think when we are discussing it last week the
6 point I was making was that with any individual, with any
type of diet, the more you restrict yourself and limit
7 yourself to a few foods or a few different types of foods,
then the greater the difficulty it is to achieve a
     8 balanced and healthy diet.

9 MR. MORRIS: So, if you eat fastfood regularly -----

10 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think are you pushing at an open door on
              that.
    11
MR. RAMPTON: Mr. Morris has had his change of general
12 cross-examination. Your Lordship has identified precisely
the reason why I asked Professor Wheelock to refer to this
    13 document.

14 MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you were totally vegetarian you would
have to be careful that you were getting certain
    15 essentials?
              A. Yes.
    16
         Q. If you ate an awful lot of hamburgers you would have to be
17 very careful to balance your diet?
              A. Absolutely.
    18
MR. MORRIS: I want to object to this whole line of argument
19 that has been brought in. I think it is not a legal
argument. It has not been brought up in the plaintiffs'
    20 case.

    21 MR. JUSTICE BELL: No.

22 MR. MORRIS: Our argument is for healthy eating.

23 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just listen to me. I have allowed this in
because it is getting towards close of play on the last
24 day we have before a six-week break. The fact I have let
it does not mean I will attach weight to it at the end of
25 the day. You will have ample opportunity to address me in
              relation to that.
    26
MR. MORRIS: I do not know if I should be expected to do that.
27 I have a list here of 15 studies that show the opposite of
what Mr. Wheelock, but am I under an obligation to dig
    28 these studies up?

29 MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, you are not.

30 MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, this is certain that if any of the
defendants or any of their witnesses should for any reason
