Day 046 - 04 Nov 94 - Page 44
A. I think, again, that the commercial was specifically
put together, as far as I know -- since I did not work on
it specifically -- to show what the basic foods groups are
that children and, to some degree, adults, everyone, should
be using.

MR. MORRIS: On the transcript of, I think it was yesterday,
when you were examined by Mr. Rampton, on page 65 of the
transcript of that day, Mr. Rampton said:

"Are you proposing that a person could or should sensibly
eat McDonald's food as his sole diet?"

Answer: "No, as I do not think anybody would want to eat
any one thing as their sole diet."

Question by Mr. Rampton: "Or as part of a diet composed
largely of that kind of food?"

Answer: "No. I think balance and moderation,
responsibility and balance and moderation are the keys."

When you say "moderation", as regards eating a diet, a diet
composed largely of that kind of food -- McDonald's kind of
food -- when people are asked for moderation, when you use
the word "moderation" in your advertising campaigns, what
are they moderating in that kind of food?
A. Well, from my perspective, to me, the word "moderation"
means that you should not over-stuff yourself.

Q. You are aware that there are governmental recommendations
for reducing fat, sugar and sodium, specifically for health
reasons; you are aware of that?
A. There are guidelines, yes.

Q. So are those the kinds of things that people should be
moderating in their diet?
A. Certainly, that is part of a well balanced diet.

Q. If found----
A. I am not a nutritionist, so I cannot give you an exact
answer. I am giving you a layman's answer.

Q. When you say "moderation", that applies to moderation of
the things which are bad for you, does it not?
A. It would certainly mean the things that you do not want
to eat or those things in your diet that you do not want to
partake in.

Q. What I am saying is that people are being encouraged to eat
more of some things, are they not? Are you aware of that,
as a promoter of McDonald's food, that the government is
recommending people eat more of certain items -- is that
correct -- like vegetables, fruit and salads, for example?
A. Again, I am familiar with the basic guidelines.

Q. Yes. So "moderation" then, when you use the word
"moderation", are you referring to things which the
government says you should have less of?
A. Again, for me, I am referring to not over-stuffing
