Day 199 - 11 Dec 95 - Page 11

  Q. Certainly, but management would not know, if there was a
criticism, from which individual member of the crew the
       criticism had come?
       A. No, not specifically, no.

  Q. So you are not saying, are you, that any actual
recriminations ever took place as a result -----
       A. No, I am saying that there was a fear of
       recriminations.

  Q. You told us -- this is my last question -- Mr. Cranna, that
you had a feeling that McDonald's and unions were not
natural bed fellows; is that right?
       A. That is correct, yes.

  Q. You tell us, you write in your statement this -- it is on
page 5, if you would like to look at it, at the top, it is
only fair you should see it. Do you have the fifth page?
       A. Yes.

  Q. There is a sentence which begins "For example" in the first
       line?
       A. Yes, I have.

  Q. "For example, if that member started to try to recruit
other crew members into the union or started trying to
organise employees in some way that it was not in the
interest of management he/she would most likely find
his/her employment at McDonald's short-lived". You are not
there suggesting that you have any direct experience of any
       such case, are you?
       A. No.

MR. RAMPTON: Thank you, Mr. Cranna.

                   Re-examined by the Defendants

MS. STEEL: Do you want to explain why you have said that, why
that was your feeling, that if a member started to try to
recruit other crew members they would not last very long at
       McDonald's?
       A. Well, it was the way when -- we were initially told,
you know, you can tell somebody something but you actually
mean something else, if you get my drift? The way it was
implied to us about unions, that McDonald's did not need
them and, basically, anybody who was going to be joining a
union was going to be trouble for McDonald's and,
therefore, you were not really part of the McDonald's
       ethos, or whatever, and basically there would be trouble;
they would not get on in the McDonald's environment.

MR. MORRIS: Mr. Rampton said something about unions and
McDonald's not being natural bed fellows -----

MR. MORRIS: I did not say it, my Lord. I summarised the
       evidence of the witness in-chief.

MR. MORRIS: "You have said the system will simply not support
crew members who adopt a position contrary to management".
Would you agree with the Head of Personnel, Sid Nicholson,
