Day 072 - 12 Jan 95 - Page 26
park on top of this, so ..... I have not said in my
statement that every single piece of environment/index.html">litter will be picked
up. On a number of the occasions we have had complaints
about one straw wrapper on a customer's doorstep, and we
cannot have people in the same spot for the whole day
waiting for someone to pick up a piece of environment/index.html">litter so there
will be people dropping environment/index.html">litter in between the trash walks.

Q. You are basically saying that it is impossible to keep the
streets free of environment/index.html">litter, of McDonald's environment/index.html">litter that is?
A. No, of any environment/index.html">litter.

Q. Yes, but McDonald's, as a part of that, it is impossible to
keep the streets free of McDonald's environment/index.html">litter?
A. Well, depending if you meant free for any period of
time, for -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Put in the word "absolutely". I would have
thought it is obvious that it is impossible to keep streets
absolutely free of McDonald's environment/index.html">litter.
A. Yes, it is impossible to keep it absolutely clean --
free.

MS. STEEL: If environment/index.html">litter patrols are really going out or have
really been going out over the last year and a half every
half an hour, why is that so many of the residents do not
seem to think that they exist?
A. Did you say "any of" the residents or "many"?

Q. "Many", so many?
A. I would not say so many; I would not say that there was
many complaints.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Put it in another way. There have been
complaints about the environment/index.html">litter?
A. Yes.

Q. You say you are doing your best; you have these half hourly
trash walks in the immediate area and wider ones on other
occasions?
A. Yes.

Q. Why do you think you still get complaints?
A. I believe that people have different thresholds as
well. As I say, some people have complained about a straw
wrapper on the doorstep, when we cannot guarantee that that
straw wrapper will be picked up automatically, so people
will complain. People have basements which, as I have
said, we cannot -- I have stopped them going down to the
basements for obvious reasons. People have been opposed to
McDonald's even before the restaurant was opened, so people
have been actively trying to close us down since day one.

MS. STEEL: For no apparent reason, just because they have a
grudge against McDonald's?
A. I believe so, yes.

Q. People do not just complain about single straw wrappers, do
they, or just about the environment/index.html">litter in their basements? They
complain about other packaging, fry cartons, clamshells,
