Day 247 - 10 May 96 - Page 54

Houses of Parliament have not. It just cannot help me make
       my decision.

MS. STEEL: Just on the McDonald's documents. I mean, I might
be wrong but I think there have been occasions when we have
tried to refer to McDonald's documents and it has been said
that we do need to confirm that they are released by
somebody in the company or that they are ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You did, but I did that for you at the very
beginning of the matter by establishing that this is
something they have put out to children, or students
rather, and therefore I did it with regard to the 'beneath
the arches'. You had to ask one question only. Would you
put out to students in this country making inquiry of you
anything which you did not accept, did not believe to be
true? The moment you get a 'yes' answer to that, and Mr.
Preston could hardly be expected to say no, the whole of it
goes in under the umbrella of company. You do not then
have to put sentence after sentence saying, 'Do you agree
       with that?'

MR. MORRIS: Maybe it would be a good time to have a break?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Have a break but where we can move it
forward, can I just make this point? Your exercise in
preparing your cross-examination along these lines has not
been wasted because you have, effectively, got notes of the
points you want to make. Hopefully, you will be selective
about which are the strong ones when you come to make
comment to me in due course. What you do not have to do is
use Mr. Preston, I say for want of a better word, as an
       achiever for their introduction.

I will come back at ten past 3 and I would like you to
decide, bearing in mind what I have just said, what you can
usefully and properly put to the Mr. Preston and what is
really just taking up time using him as the medium to pass
       up information to me.

                         (Short adjournment)

MR. MORRIS: You do a pamphlet for potential franchisees; do you
       not?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is it true that franchisees are represented on almost all
       McDonald's Policy Influencing Committees?
       A. I think so, yes. "Almost all", do you mean 100 per
       cent or?

  Q. I do not know, I am just quoting?
       A. I think most of them are, yes. All the major, yes.

  Q. A question about staff: The crew members eating in at
McDonald's during their working periods, is the situation
in the UK -- we have had some figures; I think Mr. Wheelock
did a survey for McDonald's about staff meals, do you
       recall that?
       A. I do not recall it but go ahead.
