related pay reviews, sorry, how many people received -----
       A. What proportion, yes.

  Q. Yes. You have said about 10 per cent did not result in a
pay increase, about 50 per cent were the 5 pence category,
and 30 per cent for 10 pence and 10 per cent for 5 pence.
Where did you get those figures from?
       A. Those were my recollections of, again, how many I would
probably anticipate on a payroll, but they are not direct
figures; they are just purely sort of recollection. I
would have thought that some of my people would not have
got pay rises and, equally, some of those would have got 15
       pence pay rises.

  Q. I think I read it out as 15, anyway.

MR. ATKINSON: I think you said 5.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It does not matter. We can see that you have
said 10 per cent no increase; then you said most of the
increases, but then you said about half of them, were the 5
       pence category.

MISS STEEL: If I did read it out as 5 pence, the 10 per cent
figure, I did mean to read it out as 15.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is meant to be 15, not 5.

MS. STEEL: The second -- it is the 10 per cent that is
       15 pence?
       A. Yes, right. "15 pence increases were by no means rare,
about 30 and 10 per cent respectively." So 10 per cent
       refers to the 15, certainly.

  Q. You did not get these by analysing any of the paperwork in
       the stores?
       A. Before I made my statement?

  Q. Yes.
       A. Absolutely not, no.

  Q. Or generally?
       A. This is -----

  Q. Is that ever done?
       A. Sorry?

  Q. Is that ever done, a check on how many people are getting
       what pay increases?
       A. I do not think I would look for it in that sort of
       respect, in terms of -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can a store manager or anyone else that you
know of get ready access to information about what
percentage are getting nothing, 5 pence, 10 pence or
15 pence in any given store or, indeed, generally
       throughout the system?
       A. Not in terms of hitting a button and a figure of
percentages would come out. I believe the restaurants have
got something that is called a raise chart, and that is a
