Day 025 - 16 Sep 94 - Page 17

do not remember them, for adults the minimum
recommendations are", then it sets them out in four
       groups.

Then in the middle column: "How to get the most out of
McDonald's? Now ... about our good food. Let's say you
order a Big Mac, regular french fries, and a medium diet
       Coke for lunch today.

In order to balance your diet, here are the minimum
additional servings recommended for the rest of your day.
Low-fat dairy products 2 servings, fruits and vegetables 4
       servings, protein 1 serving.

This example will give you a good start. But don't stop
with today. You should think about your diet every day in
       order to truly eat healthfully.

Balance is best. Balance comes from eating a variety of
foods. Because nutritionists agree, no one food provides
all the necessary nutrients. At McDonald's, variety in
our menu means you can balance what you order. And make
sure your McDonald's meal balances with other meals you
       eat.

How to find out even more about McDonald's nutrition. Ask
your McDonald's Restaurant Manager for this booklet,
        'McDonald's Food - The Facts'."

Mr. Gardner, does that advice in that advertisement which
goes with the sheet in front of it not precisely reflect
the evidence you gave yesterday, and to me again this
morning, that if you have a McDonald's meal you must be
careful what you eat the rest of the time and then you
       will be OK?
       A. Not at all, sir.

  Q. Why?
       A. It is apples and oranges. This advertisement is
referring to the four basic food groups as you have
previously read. It is not talking about sodium; it is
not talking about cholesterol; it is not talking about
saturated fat and it is not talking about fat in general.
What this advertisement says (and also what it conveys) is
that McDonald's is a significant source of food from the
       four basic food groups.

Let me point you specifically to the third paragraph
beginning at the very bottom of the middle column: "How
to get the most out of McDonald's". It says, having
ordered a Big Mac, regular fries, medium diet coke, which
I think the Big Mac and regular fries, although it is not
in this chart (there is no chart here so people could see
this for themselves), is approximately 45 to 50 grammes of
fat. I do not recall the sodium, but it would be
relatively high. That is not mentioned.

What instead McDonald's is focusing on here is, reading
on, "In order to balance your diet, here are the minimum
additional servings recommended", not the maximum
