Day 019 - 27 Jul 94 - Page 47
1 better than elsewhere?
A. No, it was not my purpose or my remit to review all
2 the farms at Sun Valley.
3 Q. No.
A. That would be a very time consuming and tedious
4 exercise, as you appreciate. It is to see whether what
I was shown met what I considered within normal commercial
5 practice to be acceptable. So, I only did one flock in
this particular instance. That was all I was able to do.
6 However, having heard the reasons for why that one flock
had such a low prevalence of severe leg weakness ---
7
Q. That is four and five?
8 A. -- four and five, that is a general policy,
presumably, applied to all other flocks. There is no way
9 of discriminating between flocks on that basis, in which
case it is not unreasonable to suppose that there were low
10 levels of fours and fives elsewhere.
11 MR. MORRIS: Just a couple more questions on rearing, then we
will move on. Just on the subject of the lighting, just
12 to clarify: If I put to you that the lighting was dim at,
whatever it was, 75 lux or 80 lux -- I cannot remember the
13 figures you said -- would that be reasonable?
A. I would disagree. I would disagree with that comment.
14
Q. So how would you describe it in human terms, if I went
15 into a room at 80 lux?
A. It is certainly sufficient to read a newspaper by.
16
Q. What is daylight in lux terms?
17
MR. JUSTICE BELL: That must vary enormously.
18 A. We discussed this yesterday. Do you wish to proceed,
go through that again?
19
MR. MORRIS: Just briefly, yes, please.
20
MR. JUSTICE BELL: You said it was about 100 out in the
21 corridor, you thought. Did you say that?
A. Just a moment. Let me recap on my memory. It would
22 be between 100 and 200, I would suspect, because it is not
a very well lit corridor.
23
Q. What do you think it is where you stand there?
24 A. Where I stand now, I should think, holding up like
that, it would be about 500, about.
25
MR. MORRIS: I am not sure if that get us any further forward.
26
MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. Anyway, you think that someone with
27 average eyesight could read a newspaper in 80 lux?
A. Absolutely.
28
Q. Without pulling it up?
29 A. With undue effort, yes, I agree.
30 MR. MORRIS: Does that not so low level of lighting have
management benefits in terms of managing the herd, the
