Day 258 - 07 Jun 96 - Page 47

       coming up.

  Q. As I understand it, currently they have a process of
vetting employees by checking CVs. You do not know whether
McDonald's makes use of that facility?
       A. I know they do not, I was the Head of Personnel.

  Q. Both organisations, both the Economic League and Camprin,
you were aware that they employed private detectives,
       bugged phones, followed people and took people's mails;
       yes?
       A. No.

  Q. You were not aware of that?
       A. No.

  Q. You did not. Did you use -- I suppose if you were not
aware of it... Did they have any relationship with Kings
       or Bishops at all?
       A. Not to my knowledge.

  Q. Did Kings or Bishops do any of those things to your
       knowledge?
       A. I have only used Kings and Bishops on one occasion, and
that was for the reason we are here in court today.

  Q. Did they bug phones?
       A. I hope not.

  Q. I have asked you about following people?
       A. I hope not because bugging phones is offensive, and
I would not approve of it.

  Q. Or steal mail other than that--
       A. Well, I told you, on the one occasion that I became
aware of it I stopped it.

  Q. OK. When you had problems with, for example, say, somebody
like Mr. Sutcliffe in East Ham, was it, wanting to set up a
union branch; you gave evidence about it before?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Did you ever go to the Economic League to find out
information about people who were interested in setting up
       unions?
       A. No, I never used the Economic League, really. I mean,
I do not want to make too much of it, I hardly ever touched
       the Economic League.

  Q. That was all in Mr. Carroll's hands?
       A. Yes, I suppose. I think he was asking them for what
they could find out about organisations that may be
       anti-McDonald's. That is all.

  Q. You said that you think it was the Economic League that you
got the aims and principles of London Greenpeace leaflet
       from; yes?
       A. Well, what I said was, I did not know but I thought it
       possibly could be them.
