Day 115 - 06 Apr 95 - Page 43

was lucky, you got the job. You was told a time to start
and you would meet a team which you went to the factory you
met. You went out and you might say to the foreman:
"Well, how would you catch these chickens?" He might just
say: "Well, this is the way I catch it, but everyone has
their own different ways and ideas of catching chickens".
There was no specific way shown by Sun Valley how to catch
chickens; everyone had their own way of catching.

  Q. When you were catching chickens, was there any difference
between how you caught them when you were on your own and
when a supervisor came around or an official came round?
       A. Yes, because when a supervisor came everybody caught
them reasonably in the proper way, if you would say. When
there was no-one around, everybody caught them their own
way. But even when the supervisor was there, if things had
got behind time, he would be looking at you and say: "Well,
can you pull your finger out because this is creating a
problem for everyone", because if one team was late it
would go down the line of events; if you was late, the next
one would be late, the next one would be late and, at the
end of the day, if you are going to the factory they would
be late. So, it creates a problem with time and cost, if
you like. They would say: "Well, get on, do the job", you
know, get it from you, get it finished and pull yourself
       together, you know.

  Q. When they asked you to hurry up, did they ask you to be
       very careful?
       A. There was no mention of carefulness -- just get on and
do the job as if it was nobody here.

  Q. Do you think you had enough time to consider the welfare of
       the birds?
       A. No.

  Q. You have mentioned complaining to Mr. Stiles, I think,
about the heads getting trapped. Did you ever complain
about generally not having enough time to take care of the
       welfare of the birds?
       A. On a number of occasions we complained about time,
especially when they said: "Well, you have got heads out
of these drawers again", it is this team that done it, not
blaming each individual. He said: "Well, the problem
stems from time. If you could give more time to load and
consider the welfare of animals, even the welfare of your
workers, if you like, as well, and take your time and do
things, you could have the job done whiter than white", but
it was all down to time-consuming. You most have X amount
of birds there and how they got there, they were not
       worried.

  Q. What happens if the birds did not get out of the way of the
forklift bringing in or taking out ---
       A. If nobody -----

  Q. -- the modules?
       A. If nobody has seen the bird in time and kicked it out
of the way or tried to grab it, it would get run over and
       more often -----
