Day 022 - 12 Sep 94 - Page 56

       A. I am sorry. I am just trying to look at these
       figures.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where have you got those figures from?

MR. MORRIS: I have a sort of press release by people that
criticised the study. It is not evidence in itself, but
it is only from E-mail. I was hoping that -----
       A. In the results it says: "As assessed by questionnaire
dietary intake as a percentage of total energy intake with
39 per cent for total fat.

  Q. Which is very high, is it not?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which page or you on?
       A. This is on page 385 of the big 385 or 2039 of the
       actual article itself.

MR. MORRIS: So, if it was going to make comparisons to see if
       fat -----
       A. But that is only the average. What I am trying to
look at now is what the actual range was.

  Q. I think the range was 25 per cent to 49 per cent.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where are you getting that from?

MR. MORRIS: This is from an article in Associated Press.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. That may be, but Dr. Arnott has just
got the figure from the actual -- what are you looking at,
       Dr. Arnott?
       A. I am looking at the table on page 385, where it
       actually says less than 22 -- 22 to 26, 27 to 29, 30 to 33
and greater than 34. So there, obviously, were people in
the lowest quintile who had less than 22 per cent of
intake from fat, that is saturated fat.

MR. MORRIS: That is saturated fat, is it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. That is definitely saturated fat?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Can you find the total fat as a percentage? I cannot work
       it out.

MR. RAMPTON: Anyhow, I think those are grammes per day and not
       percentages.
       A. They are grammes, yes.

MR. MORRIS: Maybe that is something that can be looked into,
but if it is found that, say, the lowest quintile or,
indeed, the lowest individuals were all above 25 per cent
       fat in the diet -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where have you actually got that from?

MR. MORRIS: I have this in -----
