Day 015 - 21 Jul 94 - Page 49
1 A. A good Yorkshire expression, my Lord.
2 MS. STEEL: Does McDonald's say anywhere, give advice to its
customers, put big signs up by the price board or whatever
3 saying: After you have had your meal here, make sure you
only eat foods low in fat for the rest of the day?
4 A. Not to my knowledge. Again, I would remind you that
the basic information is provided in the leaflets or in
5 the little booklets that are there. Again, I would just
go on to say that you cannot force nutrition down people's
6 throats. You might be interested in a -----
7 Q. You can promote an unhealthy diet?
A. There is an interesting little cutting from the Daily
8 Telegraph two days ago: "Public demand puts pork pies
back on line."
9
MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have read that -- not in the Telegraph I
10 hasten to add. Do not go any further. The theme of it
was, so it is out in the open, was that after
11 health-conscious 80s people, it was suggested with what
foundation I do not know, but going back to eating what
12 they feel like. That was the theme of the article?
A. Yes. I mean it is just short, perhaps I could read
13 it?
14 Q. No. There is a difference between the way Ms. Steel asks
her questions and the way you answer them, in that it may
15 be implicit in her questions that in order to have a
healthy diet you have to meet the recommendations day by
16 day, and, rightly or wrongly, you do not adhere to that
view?
17 A. No, I do not accept that. I am not aware of many
nutritionists who do.
18
MS. STEEL: That is partly because you think people do not eat
19 at McDonald's every day?
A. I know people do not eat at McDonald's every day.
20
Q. You know that?
21 A. Yes.
22 Q. Nobody at all?
A. That will be coming up later.
23
Q. Nobody at all?
24 A. The proportion of McDonald's customers who eat more
than once week is infinitesimal.
25
Q. What about the staff?
26 A. Well, that is another question.
27 Q. Are you not concerned about the health of the staff?
A. Yes.
28
Q. You are?
29 A. Yes.
30 Q. Shall we have a look at the survey of the staff? It is in
volume VI, the pink bundle.
