Day 010 - 11 Jul 94 - Page 66
1 papers.
A. I may need to refer to this so I will keep it open.
2
Q. Please turn to divider 22 which is at the beginning of the
3 volume?
A. OK.
4
Q. I expect you have seen this document before, have you not?
5 A. I am aware this document was produced at the time and
I saw it at one time.
6
Q. Tell us a little bit about these bodies: Natural Resources
7 Defence Council, Environmental Defence Fund and Friends of
the Earth? Take them in turn. Do you have regard or
8 respect for the Natural Resources Defence Council as an
environmental body?
9 A. I think that some of the work that the Environmental
Defence Fund, the Natural Resources Defence Council or
10 Friends of the Earth do is beneficial. I can also add
that all of these organisations at various times came into
11 conflict for various reasons with the organisation
I worked for, and those conflicts were related to a number
12 of different matters.
13 Q. I am sure that may be right. I was not really asking you
that. What I am asking you really is this, Friends of the
14 Earth, are they a respectable body of people, are they a
respected body of people?
15 A. I suppose it depends on who you ask.
16 Q. Do you respect them?
A. My respect for them is limited to some of the work
17 they do on legislative issues, but it is limited.
18 Q. This question of CFCs and HCFCs was at any rate a quasi
legislative issue, was it not?
19 A. I am sorry?
20 Q. The use of CFCs was the subject of a Protocol signed in
Montreal on 16th December 1987?
21 A. I am aware of the Montreal Protocol process.
22 Q. Do you know the phase-out periods under the Montreal
Protocol?
23 A. I have not read the Montreal Protocol.
24 Q. Very well. Can we just have a quick look at this
document? I am not going to read the whole thing. It
25 calls itself: Statement of support for the food service
packaging institute, fully halogenated chlorofluorocarbon
26 voluntarily phase-out programme, CFC voluntary phase-out
programme. Right?
27 A. Yes.
28 Q. That is what that is. You note the word "voluntary"?
A. Yes, I do.
29
Q. You know also that McDonald's was the first to volunteer
30 to phase out CFCs?
A. That is right.
