Day 035 - 12 Oct 94 - Page 50

estriol, the three oestrogens we look at, but we are also
interested in whether or not that oestrogen molecule is
capable of biological activity. One of the factors which
determines that is the level of SHBG, sex hormone binding
globulin, in the blood. That is also altered by dietary
       factors.

  Q. You use words like "is" and "are" and so on. I am going
to use this opportunity -- I am coming back to it, Doctor
Barnard, with its paper in a moment -- in a sense to jump
ahead in time and show you something that was produced by
a body of scientists in this country. I will ask you a
question about that in a minute. Is there still a witness
Grey Book up there? Can you hunt about up there to see if
you can find something that look like that?
       A. I am sure I do not have the original, but I wonder if
I may have a Zerox or photocopy?

  Q. No, there has in the past been an original.
       A. I am glad to look; I am just not quite sure where to
       look. (Handed)

MR. MORRIS: Just before we continue, is it possible to have a
copy of the video, just so someone remembers, of what was
       shown?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, we will come back to that a bit later.

MR. RAMPTON: I did say I would ask you a preliminary question
about this. You will see, Dr. Barnard, if you look at its
cover, that it is a document which is issued by our United
Kingdom government. Its purpose is, so far as possible,
to provide dietary reference values for food energy and
       nutrients in the United Kingdom.

Each of the topics was the subject of review and
consideration by a separate panel of scientific experts.
The Panel on fat and carbohydrates composition is to be
found at page xii or, as Mr. Morris calls it, xii, at the
beginning of the book. Can you just glance through that
list of names; only the names, not the observers, they are
not so important, I dare say.

What I want to ask you is this: From your knowledge of
the literature on the sort of topic we have been
discussing, have you any reason to think that the views of
that Panel ought to be discredited or disregarded by this
       court?
       A. No.

  Q. Thank you. Then, please, turn to page 49. This is in the
chapter on Fat. The chapter is actually headed with a
peculiar English succinctness, "Fat". Section 3.5 is
about cancer. What I would like you to do, if I may, and
then we can put this book away after I have asked you a
couple of questions, is to read to yourself -- my Lord, it
might be a good idea to have the five-minute break now --
the whole of that section 3.5 down to the Conclusions
after Obesity and Diabetes at the top of page 55.
       A. You would like me to read pages -----
