Day 096 - 03 Mar 95 - Page 51

       that area down there?
       A. Roughly twice the size of the witness box.

  Q. The stunning pen?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Sometimes there are two or three pigs in it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. There is one person working this stunning the pigs?
       A. Yes.

  Q. If they are wet the current can get transferred to another
pig thereby receiving an electric shock, yes?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Have you ever seen that?
       A. That would be a lie to say I have never seen it, sir,
but if that was a problem we just would not do it.

  Q. But almost anything can happen in this world. The moment
you say it cannot, it does?
       A. Yes exactly, yes.

  Q. What I am interested in is what does happen. Have you
       actually seen that happen?
       A. I have seen it happen very rarely, sir.

MR. MORRIS: How long are the pigs in the stunning pen, on
average, say, if there are two pigs, how long will they
       both be in there?
       A. A matter of seconds.

  Q. So with one person working -- maybe it is comment.

MS. STEEL: The stunning pen, that is within a larger room, the
       slaughter room?
       A. No, no, it is in the lairage. It is not in the
slaughter room. That is a separate part of the lairage,
the end piece of the lairage which is again separated from
the area where we collect the blood from.

  Q. Say someone in the stunning pen, can they see the person
       doing the sticking?
       A. No, because he is behind the wall.

  Q. Can the people in the stunning pen see anything the other
way, further back up the lairage?
       A. Yes.

  Q. They can?
       A. Yes, the people in the stunning pen can see the
droveman who is droving the pigs to them with the water
       hose.

MR. MORRIS: So it would have been impossible for Mr. Gregory
not to have seen the spraying if it was being done?
       A. If it was being done, it would be impossible for him
not to see it. Whether he took notes of it is another
       thing.
