Day 192 - 27 Nov 95 - Page 57
said that we had to get the director of organising on board
with us, that he had to OK it before we started signing
cards, and then at the next union meeting the cards would
be distributed which she says she did not know about but
she did.

Q. At that time was she enthusiastic about the union?
A. Yes.

Q. She was?
A. Yes.

Q. Right.
A. Then I did not tell her to stop asking questions. In
fact, she was very friendly with the union organizer, Rui,
because I remember her giving him a cigarette, her giving
him a cigarette because he had run out, or something.

Q. She did not appear to be intimidated by him or to feel he
was like a liar, or anything?
A. No, not at all. People -- we had a volunteer sort of
system of people that wanted to do this and, I mean, we did
not force the cards on anyone to get people to sign up, but
we asked them, you know, "Do you want to do this? If you do
not fine, do not worry about it", because some people that
maybe did not want to be on the committee, which was fine;
but she obviously did because we gave her cards and we had
divided up lists and each person was writing down their
list of who they could get of who they knew.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: How old is Nicole Owen?
A. I believe she is a year younger than I am.

MS. STEEL: How was it split up about who should try and get
who to join?
A. It is just whoever knows a person, you know; once we
sorted a list of people we knew and people would write down
the names of people that they knew that they could trust to
talk to about it, you know.

Q. Right.
A. You know, it would make it faster if everybody would do
five instead of one person doing 102 signatures, right.

I did call her to ask her if she had signed anyone up, and
I believe she signed one or two people up. I know she did
not do her full amount, but nobody really could. But I did
not badger her. I called her to see how it was going. I
remember she was going through a lot of -- and I laid off
of her during that summer, because, like, I did not -- she
was not involved as much as other people because she was
going through some family problems at that point; she had
moved out, or something or other. So, I mean, she did not
really have a lot of time for much of anything. I did not
promise them a wage increase.

Q. I mean, I think you have covered all that. So -----
A. Yes, OK.

Q. Unless there is anything else -----
