  Q. Yes, but that would upset members of staff that were
expecting a certain amount of wages or whatever ---
       A. It may.

  Q. -- and they got less?
       A. It may.

  Q. Have you heard those kind of grievances expressed by crew
       persons at your -----
       A. Not to me. They would not make those references to
me. That would go, if they were unhappy, to the Store
Manager or to the Supervisor. That is the direction.

  Q. As Head of Personnel, were you not concerned about -----
       A. The Head of Personnel does not visit stores regularly
enough to deal with this. That has to be dealt with
immediately by the proper chain of command.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just every so often I have to confess you
leave me behind, because I just would not expect people to
be complaining about something like that. It might be a
perfectly good ground for complaint, but I would not be
expecting them to trouble the Head of Personnel with it,
even if he turns up on the spot, unless he asks them a
       specific question about it.

  MR. MORRIS: I agree.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: All Mr. Nicholson has said is he has not
heard about it. It gives you lots of opportunity to ask
people who are lower down the chain whether they have heard
       about it, including Mark Davis.

MR. MORRIS: Your job you have claimed was to care about the
welfare of the crew people at McDonald's?
       A. Care about everybody.

  Q. Never mind everybody; we are talking about crew members.
You have claimed that you were concerned about personal
practices, how it affects the welfare of the crew members,
       yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So I know that you have said that you do not keep any
       statistics -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I stop you? What are you batting for? I
am trying to help you. The mere fact that they had not
complained about it to the Head of Personnel would not
prove there are no complaints. There is no need to
       challenge Mr. Nicholson about it.

MR. MORRIS: What I meant was, not have they complained to you
directly, but, in your position, are you aware that this is
a subject of grievance of crew members for these
Supervisors and Senior Supervisors, whatever, Field
Personnel Officers? Had they managered to feed this
information to you, or any of them?
