Day 188 - 15 Nov 95 - Page 35

night" -- this is on the close -- "they sit in the lobby
exhausted. Perez, especially, is absolutely wasted. His
eyes are huge and ringed, with black shadows."

That is something you witnessed yourself; yes?
       A. Yes. I think it is probably Pervase is his actual
name. I was confused at that stage as to -----

  Q. Pervase?
       A. I think it is Pervase, rather than Perez.

  Q. We will move on rapidly from this on to page 15. Rather
than read these out, to save time, if you just read to
yourself from halfway down that page, starting "the
Strand", and over to the next page, up to two-thirds of the
way down, "Friday lunchtime"; just read that to yourself.
       (Pause)
       A. Yes.

  Q. Actually, you have got "Pervase" in the last paragraph; it
says Pervase. That is an accurate note. Are these the
points you referred to earlier about steps being taken
which made the situation not normal, in terms of how the
       practices would normally be?
       A. Yes. Those kind of steps were taken to ensure that
everything was totally spick and span; and the normal
hurly-burly of daily life was glossed over.

  Q. Was -- sorry?
       A. Was glossed up for the film, really -- glossed up for
       the film.

  Q. Over the page, on page 17, at the top of the page, first
full paragraph: "At orientation, the normal statements
about instant dismissal for giving away food were not said.
Mass" -- is he one of the managers?
       A. Yes, he was Floor Manager, I think, at the time.

  Q. "....merely said that crew members would be severely talked
to." What point are you making there?
       A. When I sat in on an orientation, during observation,
the staff, potential staff, new staff, were told that
eating food outside the normal break was a sackable
offence; and on the orientation that we were filming, he
       did not say that.

  Q. Whilst you actually were filming?
       A. Whilst we were actually filming, yes.

  Q. I think you have dealt with the matters at the -- well, the
second to last paragraph that you dealt with on that page,
page 17. This is the matter about the -- I do not know
where this allegation came up, actually; is it not in your
statement, I cannot remember now -- about borrowing -- oh,
is it in the film, the point about them having to borrow
new equipment for doing the filtering in the store?
       A. I cannot remember whether it is in the filming or not.

  Q. That is the reference, anyway, yes? That is something you
       observed, and you -----
