Day 068 - 16 Dec 94 - Page 43
Costa Rica?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: First of all, do you know which areas are
allowable? You have said the only region which you are
familiar with whence beef comes in Costa Rica for
McDonald's use is Guanacaste -- was it?
A. That is correct.

Q. Can you mark where that is, because we can then assume from
your first answer that you are not familiar with it coming
from anywhere else at all in the country. Can you say
where it is?

MR. MORRIS: Take it off and mark it.
A. Let me answer that question. I am used to seeing
colour maps. Those colour maps will give you an
indication, by the colour of what are the areas are green
which would reflect a forest. This is difficult to see the
mountains. The dry forest where the cattle is grown,
commercially grown, in Costa Rica, it is in dry forest.
With a regular map, you can have a better indication of
those areas, because it is flat and it will have a
different colour. The rainforest from here is very
difficult for me, Costa Rica being such a small country, to
mark it. I can offer -----

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I am being very impolite, just to say
this, that in view of that answer -- and I quite agree,
having looked at that map, it is not Mr. Morris' fault, but
one can tell nothing from it -- we have just sent out for
biggest coloured map we can find.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think all you can, quite frankly, safely
and usefully do is, if you can identify where Guanacaste
is, mark it with the highlighter; if you cannot, do not put
any mark on at all.

THE WITNESS: I cannot.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Hand the map back, then. Is Guanacaste the
name of a town which is the centre or a particular area?
A. It is a zone, you could call it; it would be equivalent
to a district. But it is a cattle zone and well identified
in Costa Rica, well-known.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We should be able to identify it by some
other means.

MR. MORRIS: This map, will it be coming before the end of
today?

MR. RAMPTON: Yes, I hope so.

MR. MORRIS: Maybe we could leave that for the moment.

Just having seen that map, the mountains runs right through
the centre of Costa Rica, do they not, from the Nicaraguan
border down to the Panama border; is that correct?
A. If you see it there, that is correct.
