Day 135 - 15 Jun 95 - Page 11

  Q. But in any event, prior to being Second Assistant Manager,
       you were Floor Manager?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So you had some managerial position during the time when
Mr. Sutcliffe was working at the store?
       A. That is right.

  Q. You do not recall any of this business of Mr. Nicholson
       coming down to the store?
       A. I honestly cannot say I recall it.

  Q. Do you remember any notices going up in the crew room
advising the crew that Mr. Nicholson was coming down to
talk to the crew or ---
       A. I do not recall.

  Q. -- being asked to give a message to the crew that they
       could come to the meeting?
       A. I do not honestly recall. I am not saying it did not
       happen; I just cannot remember.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: There is a copy of your statement which
I have which appears to be signed by you, and underneath
you have put the date "8th June 1993" which is about two
years ago. Can you remember how long before you signed
your statement it was that you were first asked to think
back to Peter Sutcliffe or to your time at East Ham?
       A. It was shortly after.

  Q. So it was some time in 1993 you were first asked to look
       back, was it?
       A. I thought it was later but, yes, whatever the date is
       the day.

  Q. It was shortly before the date you signed a statement that
you were asked for the first time to think back about Peter
Sutcliffe and East Ham for the purposes of this trial?
       A. That is probably right, yes.

MS. STEEL: Either while you were working at Romford or while
you have been working at East Ham or anywhere else, has
Mr. Nicholson or anybody else ever been down to talk to
       crew about joining a union?
       A. Not that I recall.

  Q. Right. It would be an unusual event, would it not?
       A. I imagine so, yes.

  Q. So, do you think it is quite likely that if you had known
about it you would remember it?
       A. It would be an unusual event.

  Q. It would stick out in your mind?
       A. Yes, it would probably stick in mind, but I honestly do
not recall. You have to bear in mind, obviously, when
I was working in the restaurant I was working in shift
work, so I would not necessarily have been in the
restaurant at the time. It might have coincided with my
days off, so, you know, I might not necessarily be there at
