Day 204 - 15 Jan 96 - Page 12

       A. Yes.

  Q. So the crew members did not see that happening; they would
see the clock card the next time they came into work; is
       that what you are saying?
       A. Or if they were there present at the time on a Saturday
       evening or a Sunday morning.

  Q. Which would not be very frequent, would it?
       A. Well, one system that we used to do at Colchester High
Street was, rather than, say, adding and calculating the
whole clock cards up at the end of the week, we used to do
it on the Friday or Saturday and total up the week so far.
So, consequently, you only had a Saturday to actually add
on to the clock card. It saved time and money at the end
       of the day.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have asked this question more than once ---

MS. STEEL: But the crew -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: -- because I keep forgetting. When did the
Husky actually come into Colchester? Can anyone remember
now? (To the witness): Can you remember?
       A. I am sorry, sir, I cannot.

MS. STEEL: I think someone said it was 1990, but I am not
       sure.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, the date varies between 1989 and 1990,
       but certainly not before 1989.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Right.

MS. STEEL: The crew were not standing there watching while the
totalling up was done, though, were they? They might have
been in the store, some of them might have been in the
store, but they would have been at work?
       A. They did not witness it being put down on paper, yes.

  Q. When the clock card was totalled at the end of the week,
presumably, when the new week starts the crew member gets a
       new clock card?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So they would not necessarily see the total on the clock
       card?
       A. As my understanding was, I believe that the old clock
card was still stapled on to the back of the new one.

  Q. So each week, you are saying, they unstapled the old clock
card and then stapled it to the next week's one?
       A. Yes. I mean, I am not 100 per cent sure about that,
but on a few occasions I recall that was the system that we
       did at a period.

  Q. Otherwise, they would not see their hours, would they, the
       crew?
       A. On the first week, no.
