Day 166 - 28 Sep 95 - Page 47
A. Certainly, although I would not be able to give you
names.

Q. You think that did happen?
A. Very possibly, yes.

Q. People came?
A. These people would work for you and, as I said, do the
night shift, a weekend day shift, and then if those people
are with you months, years, they get good at their job.

Q. To be quite candid, it sounds to me as if you think it
probably did happen but you cannot specifically remember
any particular occasion?
A. Yes, without naming somebody's name.

MS. STEEL: How often were you advertising for jobs or were you
taking people on -- probably, most importantly, how often
were you taking people on?
A. Summer time, at Christmas time. Perhaps if some of
your numbers, if you thought that you needed to boost your
numbers up; it might be perhaps any time.

Q. When you were talking about the 50 people being
interviewed, that would be something in the summer, would
it?
A. Not necessarily. It is just the job centres would
sometimes perform better one day than another day.

Q. So, when you had 50 people interviewed how many of them
would you be taking on?
A. It would depend on various things. Unfortunately, the
job centres, on the one hand, did not actually vet people
coming to you. You might not have people with work
permits, national insurance numbers. They might be --
going back into those days, if I recall, it is like if you
were claiming benefits it was part and parcel, I think, you
had to attend interviews to actually receive your benefits
and if they checked up and you did not attend them ....

Q. So you got a lot of people applying who were not really
interested in the job, then?
A. Not necessarily, no.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You mean you did get people who you thought
were just going through the motions so they could collect
their benefits?
A. Yes.

MS. STEEL: There would probably be interviews for some crew
most weeks of the year, that would be fair to say?
A. Honestly, it would depend. It would depend on the
needs at the time.

Q. Right. But that would be a fair picture, obviously not
precisely, but as a kind of general picture?
A. Not every week of the year, no.

Q. Most weeks of the year?
A. Quite possibly not in January or February, or even
