Day 090 - 16 Feb 95 - Page 38
THE WITNESS: I think the context is ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you recall that?
A. I cannot recall the specifics.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, for what it is worth and your Lordship
will decide what it is worth, I have no objection to that
passage being put to the witness. The witness must have
the text, however.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is fair enough.

MR. RAMPTON: He should be given the time, if he requires, to
look at any context.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Stay in your seat, Dr. Pattison, and just
read it. If that provokes you to read some other part of
the book, then do so.

MS. STEEL: There is a reference there to boredom eating in
broilers, is there not?
A. Yes, that is correct.

Q. So, does that refresh your memory about boredom eating in
broilers?
A. Yes, I think the context in which it is written is very
much along the lines that I was describing this morning,
where more and more people are looking at increasing the
periods of darkness given to birds to improve their
activity and it should improve their general welfare.

MR. RAMPTON: Your Lordship should also note, because your
Lordship has not a copy, that the words "boredom eating"
are in inverted commas.

MS. STEEL: When did you start to replace bell drinkers with
nipple drinkers, nipple and cup drinkers?
A. The nipple and cup drinker system became available
first, I would think, about six or seven years ago and has
been progressively improved over the years. So, it is now
an accepted form of providing water. They are
progressively replacing the bell drinkers.

Q. When did Sun Valley start replacing it?
A. When they first became available. We tried out the
initial systems that were available and then progressively
we have been replacing the old systems with the new over
the last five years.

Q. Why have you been doing that?
A. The main benefit from the nipple and cup system is that
it reduces the spillage of water on to the environment/index.html">litter, which
was a feature of the bell drinkers that was really highly
undesirable.

Q. For what reason?
A. The maintenance of good environment/index.html">litter is a prime -- of prime
importance to birds to maintain dry and friable material
for them to walk around on and to lie in.
