a wire floor?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is it really helpful
to anthropomorphise these things?

MS. STEEL: Are you seriously asserting it is comfortable for
chickens to stand on a wire floor for the whole of their
lives?
A. I do not know that it is not so how can I say -----

Q. You do not know that it is not?
A. No -- any more than you do.

Q. The chickens in the broiler units, do you think they are
comfortable too?
A. They seem to be when I have been there.

Q. They are crowded, are they not? They are crowded in, they
are crammed in?
A. Only at the end of their life.

Q. So do you think they are comfortable at the end of their
lives?
A. The last couple of days, I would not have thought that
they are particularly uncomfortable. They certainly do not
move around a lot, but then they do not when they are
younger either. In some of these chicken grow out houses
which are pretty long, if you observe the chickens for a
while, when there is plenty of freedom and space, they
really do not move very far. They stay very much in one
area, although they could, they could move the whole length
of the house if they wanted to. I think that is the same
way when they are older, so I am not sure they even want to
move around that much.

Q. They might be intimidated about crossing other chickens'
territory when they are all crammed in so closely?
A. I could not answer that.

Q. You do not know about that then?
A. Well, of course not. I do not have the ability to talk
to chickens any more than you do.

Q. The chickens again that are in battery units, they have
less space than an A4 sheet of paper. Are you still
asserting that they are comfortable?
A. As I have said to you, I do not know that they are
uncomfortable.

Q. But this is your animal welfare policy; you are supposed to
be concerned about this. Are you saying you have not
bothered to find out?
A. Well, how would you find out if a chicken was
uncomfortable? You could listen to some researcher but who
is to say that they are right? How do you they find out?

Q. Do you know what the codes of practice are in this country
about stocking densities in broiler units?
A. Specifically, no. I leave that to the experts at Sun
Valley.
