3 A. I agree.

5 Q. Do you agree or disagree with the proposition that systems
6 or effective communication within the McDonald's system was
7 not as good as it might have been?
8 A. Well, there is always ways to improve. Although there
9 was a system there, we certainly have taken measure to
10 enhance it since and so we could probably improve it yet
11 further.

13 Q. "Visible communication: Leading by example" and so on and
14 so forth. It says, 2.26: "Area Supervisors and above were
15 carrying out many site visits to restaurants, sometimes
16 working at a 'station' in the restaurant, and there were
17 many good examples of them intervening to stop unsafe
18 practices. These actions provide a strong message to crew
19 and other managers that doing the job safely is valued,
20 especially where the health and safety reasons are clearly
21 expressed, and this helps to create a culture where health
22 and safety is promoted positively."

24 In your experience of McDonald's overall ever since you
25 have started after Oxford in 1982, has this sort of thing
26 gone on, Area Supervisors and people like that, even people
27 above, coming in and actually participating in running the
28 restaurant?
29 A. Yes, I believe Paul Preston, the President, still does
30 it, but certainly the now Chief Operations Officer. Andrew
31 Taylor works in restaurants frequently, as does most
32 everybody else in the hierarchy.

34 Q. Will they habitually intervene if they see somebody doing
35 something which they think might be dangerous?
36 A. Yes, and Andrew is usually on the phone about it as
37 well if he sees anything.

39 Q. "Written communication" which is on the next page,
40 Mrs. Barnes, 825, 2.29 is the paragraph: "Written
41 Communication. The policy statement", that is the Health
42 and Safety policy statement, "was included in the
43 crew/employee handbooks given out at orientation", you told
44 us about that, "and in most restaurants two videos were
45 also being used for that orientation." Was that universal
46 in the system or not?
47 A. Yes, I believe at the time there was a specific health
48 and safety video and also it made up part of a broader
49 orientation team based video as well.

51 Q. Do you know how long that had been going on for?
52 A. I do not.

55 A. It is a different video that we show these days.
