Day 255 - 23 May 96 - Page 26

  Q. You do not remember that at all?
       A. No.

  Q. It talks about the campaign against farm animals abuse as
well. You do not remember that at all?
       A. No.

  Q. Do you remember the one underneath about The Northern Echo,
16th October 1989, Harrogate animal rights campaigners
       picketing the store?
       A. No.

  Q. You do not remember it.
Tab 24, The Sunday Times, 15th October 1989, I think it is
the bottom one. I think it is something about chicken
Mcdeadlets coming down. Do you remember that one?
       A. Vaguely, I do actually, but not a lot about it, no.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, it may be that the relevant bit is in the
middle line of that particular series of pictures at the
       end.

MS. STEEL: It is a ground up piece of ... bad for your heart,
       antibiotic injected hormone-fed Brazilian rainforest
killing deceased, dismembered and decapitated cow".

Do think you might remember this? Presumably a letter
would have been written to the ----
       A. I do not know.

  Q. The Sunday Times?
       A. I have no idea.

  Q. You do not remember anything apart from having seen it?
       A. No. I vaguely remember The Sunday Times running this
cartoon thing but I cannot remember what we did about it.

  Q. McDonald's are not actually mentioned in there, are they?
       A. Well, by inference they must be "McChicken".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: There were "Mcdeadlets coming down".

MS. STEEL: Right but that bit is not about the cow, so the bit
about "chicken Mcdeadlets coming down" is not ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: All I can say is if they chose to take
offence at it, I can see McDonald's might think it was
       directed at them.

MS. STEEL: But the two things might, I do not know, one is
about chicken and one is about a cow.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is not the impression it would make on
       me, I must say.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I wonder if I could take 3 minutes just
before the adjournment. I really do think that I have to
make some kind of informal objection to this. We have got
now just over halfway through this file. It has taken us
an hour and three-quarter to achieve that.
