Day 259 - 10 Jun 96 - Page 42
significant -----
A. No, I do not think so. It was what I called a
random -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Two or three occasions he did it?
A. That is all, yes.

MR. MORRIS: At specific times, not twice a year that he
visited?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: My understanding of what Mrs. Pearce has said
is, he visited twice a year -- that, in her period, would
come to about 12 visits -- and on two or three of those
occasions he did a systematic check. That is what
Mrs. Pearce's evidence is.

MR. MORRIS: Is that correct?
A. Yes.

Q. So, rather than do the check which you have said here,
about dropping into some stores before coming to see you,
or something like that, on certain occasions he did a
comprehensive check of substantial numbers of stores; is
that what you are saying?
A. Yes. He came principally from the restaurant. If he
had had a crew member -- if he had had a complaint or had
reason to believe that there had been an error made, he
would come and have a look at it. During his time then, he
would perhaps have a look at other stores, just to make
sure that the calculations were correct. It was like a
random check.

Q. I am not talking about individual complaints which you say
he got and then you say he said he followed up on. I am
talking about a comprehensive check of a company's payroll
procedures.
A. I have answered you. He did that.

Q. He did that two or three times?
A. Yes.

Q. He did not do that for every complaint or for every visit
to your Head Office?
A. No.

Q. Why did he do it those two or three times? Why did he
say ---
A. Because that was part of his job.

Q. -- comprehensive check? It was part of his job?
A. That was what his job was to do, to make sure -- and
also to invite me to ask him any questions about
calculations which perhaps were very complex, for example,
holiday pay calculations, which is quite complex; and he
would always be there if you had any queries on it; he
would help.

Q. Did you see statistics from these comprehensive checks?
A. No, I did not.
