Day 240 - 24 Apr 96 - Page 40

  Q. Yes it would, would it not?
       A. But I would like to point out that the Sader and Joyce
diagram characterises primary forest, which is the most
unspoilt forest type. The implication, I think, of your
question is that the white area would, on the Sader and
Joyce diagram, indicate no forest whatsoever which would
not be the case. There would still be forest areas there
in those earlier decades in the white spaces.

  Q. Do the names Hartshorn and Tosi mean anything to you?
       A. Very much so, I know them both.

  Q. You do. There are two Hartshorns. There is a man
       Hartshorn and a woman Hartshorn?
       A. Gary Hartshorn.

  Q. Gary?
       A. Yes, that is right.

  Q. And there is Joseph Tosi Junior, is there not?
       A. There is, yes, but it is the Senior who I know.

  Q. Sorry. Those all 2 or 3 of them are very notable
authorities on the climate and geography of Costa Rica?
       A. Particularly Dr. Tosi, yes. I think Gary Hartshorn's
expertise is more of a general nature.

  Q. And you are familiar, I expect, with -- I do not want to
get the name wrong, I have lost my main file -- the
Tropical Science Centre, I think it is called, in Costa
       Rica, are not you?
       A. I am, yes. When I was working with the International
Institute for Environment and Development, when I was in
Costa Rica we established formal contact with the Centre
and they became partners with us on some part of the work
       that we were doing.

  Q. And do you know Dr. Jean Carriere?
       A. No, I do not.

  Q. You do not. Only two other things, Mr. Secrett, two
questions in a sense: Is your book that was published in
       1985 still in print?
       A. No, it is not.

  Q. Could one expect to find a copy of one in a public library,
       do you think?
       A. Today?

  Q. Yes?
       A. Yes, I would.

  Q. Good. The other thing is that will you forgive me for
being provocative at the beginning of today's hearing?
       A. Of course I will.

  Q. Thank you.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you very much, Mr. Secrett.
