of the birds, so that is not even half of them?
       A. OK, well, if he said that .....

  Q. You would accept that?
       A. I do not accept that, no.

  Q. You accepted his statement -- when you made your statement
you said that that would be standard practice?
       A. I cannot believe that he said that that was -- are you
actually saying that he said that only one in 30 birds
       actually had its neck cut?

  Q. No, 33 per cent of the birds.
       A. Had their necks cut?

  Q. Had one of their carotid arteries cut.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: And the other two-thirds not at all ---
       A. Well, I just do not accept that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: -- are you suggesting? Make it clear
whether you are suggesting that, one in three of the birds
had only one cut, or two-thirds had none cut and one-third
had one carotid artery so that he understands what you are
       putting to him.

MS. STEEL: To be honestly, it is not brilliantly clear in the
statement. But, on the February visit, he did say that
neither of the carotid arteries were being cut. Perhaps
the easiest thing is if you could get the statement down
       and look at it yourself.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you are basing it on February, we can
probably look in the orange bundle, can we not, for the
paper there if someone can give the reference?

MR. RAMPTON: No, my Lord. This, I think, is -- I am not sure
whether it is February -- 19th April 1993. It is page 233,
the last paragraph in tab 10 of yellow IX. It goes on in a
       manner of speaking ------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I suggest we look at that. If need be, we
can find what he found in February by looking in the orange
bundle. If you have something different altogether in the
transcript, you can refer us to that, Ms. Steel.

THE WITNESS: Can you tell me which page it is?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: At the top of page 234.

MR. RAMPTON: It starts at the bottom of 233, actually.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you read from that paragraph and then read
on to down to where we get to pigs.

  THE WITNESS: OK.

MS. STEEL: So, would you accept that in the vast majority of
cases you are not cutting either of the carotid arteries?
       A. That just could not be true because, if that was the
