Day 150 - 07 Jul 95 - Page 72

sometime can actually sit down and do the sum accurately.

MR. MORRIS: If it is true that you have 30,000 employees and
480 stores that those employees immediately relate to, we
are talking something like 60 to 65 employees per store.
Britain is -- maybe you do not know -- considered to be a
high volume country. I believe Mr. Stein said something
       like that.
       A. Right. High volume being what, sorry?

  Q. Sales level per store.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: He was comparing it with the States.

  MR. MORRIS: With the States.
       A. I think the UK is probably third or fourth in terms of
       sales volumes, so .....

  Q. OK. Just going back to the people that worked part-time,
say, just Saturdays, but not students, we have already
talked about students, right. Some of the students would
have been at school, would they not, still at ordinary
       school?
       A. Right.

  Q. Under 18s?
       A. Right.

  Q. Yes. Did they get fed up with working Saturdays? If they
       lived in the town ---
       A. Right.

  Q. -- and they could have been on the books because a year or
       two years -----
       A. I would not have thought so, given that if one of my
responsibilities was to make sure they did not transgress
the 10 o'clock and midnight limits during the week day,
I guess by implication they were also working outside of
Saturday, so they must have been wanting to work more hours
       by that.

  Q. No, what I mean is that I am trying to look at the Saturday
part-timers who are keen to work Saturdays -- whether they
worked other hours or not is another matter -- but did
people stay available for Saturdays for a long period of
       time?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Many of the people that stayed working or available for
Saturdays would have been people that just worked Saturdays
       as well?
       A. Sorry, I do not quite understand the question.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Some of the people who actually remained
available to work on Saturdays for quite a long period, not
just three months here and there, would have been people
       who just work Saturdays?
       A. Right.

  Q. Is that what you meant to put?
