Day 005 - 04 Jul 94 - Page 60

1 A. I told them to get to the bottom of this leaflet and
find out what they could -- end of story -- I did not get
2 any more specific than that.

3 Q. They did follow people home though, did they not?
              A. I do not know.
     4
         Q. Did you instruct them to steal letters from the Greenpeace
     5 office?
              A. I do not instruct people to steal.
     6
         Q. Are you aware they did steal letters from the Greenpeace
     7 officer?
              A. I am not aware they stole anything.
     8
         Q. You have not spoken to your solicitors about this?
9 A. About stealing? No, I have not spoken to my
              solicitors about anyone stealing anything.
    10
         Q. Have you read the statements of the spies?
11 A. No. I have not read the statements of the enquirers.

12 Q. Do you approve of those spies having stolen letters from
              the Greenpeace office?
    13
MR. JUSTICE BELL: He is not aware they have.
    14
MISS STEEL: It is in the statement. I do not think it is
    15 denied.

16 MR. JUSTICE BELL: But he says he is not aware of it. If they
had stolen correspondence, in other words, taken
17 correspondence which was not their property, to which they
were not entitled, would you approve of that?
    18 A. I do not sanction stealing.

19 MISS STEEL: OK. Can we have a couple of minutes to sort out
on what we are going on to next?
    20
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Certainly. I will stay here.
    21
                                     (Pause)
    22
MR. MORRIS: We will move on to employment issues,
23 Mr. Preston. What do your crew members in the stores,
what is their starting wage packet?
    24 A. Currently?

    25 Q. Yes.
              A. It is about £3.00, I am going to say £3.10 maybe,
26 £3.00, about £3.10 an hour, and the weighted average
hourly rate in the UK today is about £3.70, I believe,
27 plus four weeks holiday, plus food, plus uniforms, plus
after a period of service private medical insurance and,
28 in some cases again following a term of service, life
              assurance programmes as well.
    29
         Q. But the basic take home pay per hour for a starting
    30 employee is £3.00?
              A. I said roughly £3.10; it might be £3.20. I am not
