Day 188 - 15 Nov 95 - Page 09

MR. MORRIS: Pages 13 and 14 are of a slightly different
       character?
       A. Pages 13 and 14 are thoughts that I had on what
I thought it was possible to say about McDonald's, having
spent some time there, and the kind of thing that we might
-- I mean, it was my sort of interpretation of what I was
looking at at McDonald's, which I gave to the producer.

  Q. That is 13 and 14?
       A. Yes; that is objective interpretation, really.

  Q. Yes. After that?
       A. Pages 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19 are all notes that I took
during the filming week, during the filming process.

  Q. So, if we just clarify, you would have taken -- did you
take actual physical notes at the time when you made your
       observations?
       A. I would carry a notebook with me and write down what
I was actually watching. If I was talking to people and
they said something which I thought was worth recording,
then I would write down that quote in my notebook as they
spoke it. I mean, sometimes I would watch the grill
process and then go and sit at the table and write down the
description, rather than writing it down as I was watching
it. But, basically, I would write down in a notebook all
the time that I was there what people were saying and what
I was seeing; and then at night I would go back and type
       them up.

  Q. How much time did you actually spend in the store just
       observing, without working or filming?
       A. Just observing -- it is difficult to be precise, but
I would think that I spent something like ten days in the
Strand, Croydon and also another store in Surrey somewhere
       that I went to.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where was that, can you remember?
       A. I think it was East Grinstead, but -----

  Q. East Grinstead?
       A. I think so. I cannot remember, though. I know we
       drove out into the country.

MR. MORRIS: Something like ten days; and approximately how many
hours would that be each day?
       A. I would go there and watch the breakfast process and
then spend a morning, go through the lunchtimes; sometimes
I would leave in the afternoon, but other times I might
stay throughout -- I mean, come in mid-morning and go
through the whole -- I mean, I would spend something like
       eight hours there.

  Q. Approximately?
       A. Approximately each time. I mean, sometimes it might
have been shorter if I was going to do other things,
       but -----

  Q. Right. That was strictly observation?
       A. Yes.
