Day 021 - 29 Jul 94 - Page 60

Ms. Steel then put this to you: "How many studies have
2 there been on this?" Answer: "We have produced evidence
in one study and I know there are others in progress as
3 well that are coming up with similar conclusions."
Question: So you are basing your argument on one study?"
4 Were you telling the truth when you said there were other
studies to the same effect?
5 A. Yes.
6 Q. As far as you could tell?
A. Yes.
7
Q. Would you then please take the orange file?
8
MS. STEEL: I do not know this is relevant and it is also
9 misleading as to what I was saying. He is basing his
argument on the conclusions of one study, is the point
10 I was making, because he is saying the others are under
way. Obviously they cannot have had the results yet, so
11 he has to be basing it on just one study. Also this is
not relevant to any issue in the case at all.
12
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us have the question and answer and I
13 will see whether it is relevant or not.
14 MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, it is relevant to first all to Professor
Wheelock's credibility. Second, of course, it is
15 relevant to the issue of balance. Professor Wheelock in
the course of events -----
16
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us just have it, Mr. Rampton.
17
MR. JUSTICE BELL: My Lord, yes. He needs to look at the paper
18 first. It is tab 12 in orange file 3A. Do you have it?
It is the paper by Sanders and Reddy?
19 A. That is right, yes.
20 Q. It appears in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society
(1994) Volume 53, pages 297-307?
21 A. Yes.
22 Q. Do you happen to know when it actually came out? When did
you first see it might be a better question?
23 A. I saw it within the last few weeks.
24 Q. You did?
A. Yes.
25
Q. Was this in your mind when you were answering Ms. Steel's
26 questions or not?
A. Yes, I was aware this work was in progress.
27
Q. I am going to read the headnote as we lawyers pedantically
28 call it: "A study commissioned by the Vegetarian Society
claimed that there were as many 3-5 million vegetarians in
29 the United Kingdom. (The Realeat survey Office 1990).
While this may well be an overestimate of some people who
30 call themselves vegetarians do eat meat and fish
occasionally, it is apparent that many people are now
