Day 030 - 03 Oct 94 - Page 44

do not know at what point Europe against issued the Ten
Commandments. I think it was round about that time. Then
there is the Scottish Report in 1990. So, it depends to
some extent not only on the currency of the document
complained of but also where it is referring to.

I think that if it was solely concerned with the UK, and
it made a statement like "officially accepted reports
said", then it would be untrue but, of course, that is not
what it says; it is quite a nice point, I think.

But again perhaps I can expand on that slightly: If the
document had said, made a statement that could be
construed as rather stronger than what said, if it is
said: "All authoritative reports on the subject have come
to the conclusion that there is a causal link between diet
of the type described and breast and colon cancer", that
would be factually correct. There has never been a report
that has said the contrary -- not one of the status that
       I am referring to anyway.

MR. MORRIS: Which page are we on now?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You have dealt with 175 to 7.
       A. So then 188 to 91 is the brief account of the 1990 WHO
Report much mentioned already. Then page 195 is the table
which, in tabular form, summarises the recommendations of
the One Hundred Reports which again I referred to this
       morning.

MR. MORRIS: It may be worth noting that the actual reports
that you based the book on are actually outlined in the
       back of the book?
       A. Oh, yes.

  Q. In bold are the ones which were specifically analysed?
       A. There is detailed analysis of all the reports in
       tabular form.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: In relation to 195 where in the text do I
find just what the columns mean?
       A. It should be explained in the passage immediately
       before.

  Q. Yes. Can you identify it for me?
       A. Yes. I am just trying to see the most convenient, my
Lord. I think possibly the briefest passage which is most
helpful might be appendix A immediately after it.

  Q. Yes, but going back to absolute grass roots, you have the
conclusions of the One Hundred Reports analysed as
       follows?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Then in the left-hand column we have a number of food
factors, if I could describe them in that way?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Then "Everybody Yes/No". Where in the text is it
explained to me what the column "Everybody Yes/No" means?
