  Q. Which of the suppliers do that?
       A. Certainly, McCane's would, the potato Mac fry producer,
HLI would, the producer of salads. They are the main two
       in the agro-chemical area.

  Q. Who are HMI?
       A. HLI -- Howard Long International that supply salads.

  Q. Then, what, you would check the records that they keep or
       what?
       A. Mrs. Crawford's department would certainly check the
records they keep on their visits to the processor.

  Q. So, in terms of agro-chemicals getting into the feed chain
through animals, what monitoring of that is done?
       A. Getting into the feed chain of animals?

  Q. Food chain through animals.
       A. Food chain through animals?

  Q. Yes. Animals eat crops that have been ---
       A. No, I understand you.

  Q. -- sprayed or whatever?
       A. I think you should ask Mr. Walker from McKey that
       question.

  Q. So McDonald's does not do any monitoring of that?
       A. McDonald's would not do it directly, no.

  Q. In the second point of the animal welfare policy, it says:
"McDonald's insists that animals used in its products are
reared in a clean, safe, hygienic, comfortable
       environment"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What do you mean by "clean"?
       A. What do we mean by "clean"?

  Q. Yes.
       A. Well, wherever they are reared, that the areas are
clean and the animals are not as much as possible subjected
       to diseases.

  Q. Have you read the transcript of Mr. Gregory's evidence?
       A. Not entirely. I sat through part of his evidence in
       court.

  Q. Did you hear him say that when broiler chickens are put in
sheds, the sheds do not get cleaned out until they get
slaughtered at the end, so the whole of their lives they
       are living amongst their droppings?
       A. I did not hear him say that, no.

  Q. He did say that. Would you recognise that that is not what
most people would think "clean" meant?
       A. I am not even certain that that is right, but if he
says it is right, he is the expert witness -- I guess it
       is.
