Day 114 - 04 Apr 95 - Page 74
perhaps above medium sized human being?
A. It made me jump much more than I would jump in a normal
way of the things.

Q. A bit like bumping into an electric fence, is it?
A. It is something like that, yes, but I must say there
are two ways of doing it. One you can do it with your
clothe on. It is much more effective when you ----

Q. We are not asking you for a practical demonstration by
either method, Dr. Long, but would you agree with your
clothes on, your trousers, assuming that the goad is
administered to your backside that would be something
nearer to what a cow feels than if you took your clothes
offer?
A. I think that is possible. Cows are very susceptible to
electric shocks. They are very much affected by lightning
because they have four legs and I have only got two.

Q. They do not wear rubber shoes either?
A. No, not usually. It is a shock and, of course, if
I dealt that I was in atmosphere where I was not
administering it to myself but someone else who was rather
unpleasant was doing it to me, I would be much more
concerned that I might get a series of those shocks, so it
would affect me far worse.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Bring it to a close now.

MR. RAMPTON: One last question then and then I will leave goads
unless Dr. Long wants to return to them on Thursday. Do
you accept, Dr. Long, that the proper use of an electric
goad to guide cattle or to keep them under control used on
the rump of the beast, not the udder or the nose or
anything nasty like that, is not a significant animal
welfare consideration?
A. It is one of the smaller ones. I think it is why you
have to use them is the bigger welfare matter.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you, Dr. Long. If you could be back
comfortably by 10.30 on Thursday I would be grateful.

THE WITNESS: Who is going to give me this -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Someone will give you not only the
transcripts but written on a piece of paper, I hope, the
parts which Mr. Rampton spoke of which relate to chickens
rather than other animals.

THE WITNESS: If I have a doubt I need a phone number.

MR. RAMPTON: We will give you a phone number. Also we will
give you ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: A doubt about what?

THE WITNESS: If there is any doubt about what I should be
reading or not.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I would like someone to write down, not only
