Day 239 - 23 Apr 96 - Page 31

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: I think we have dealt with everything. I just want
to see if there are any further questions I need to ask.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have got the Cotter maps, which I was given
before, behind Dr. Nations and I am going put the Cotter
map upon which are marked "Sinop, Pontas e Lacerda and Nova
Xavantina" at the back of the divider which has Mr.
       Monbiot's statements in it.

MR. MORRIS: If I just ask Mr. Monbiot to clarify one thing on
that, then, if that is going to be retained: Mr. Monbiot,
you have said that Sinop comes within the tropical
rainforest areas. On Mr. Rampton's map, it is actually
outside. That may be because it is inaccurate or it may be
-- when you say you agree with the Cotter map?
       A. Well, of course -----

  Q. -- are you restricting yourself to the areas he has
       identified or have you checked?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What Mr. Monbiot said is that he broadly
agreed with it but that you cannot draw straight lines?
       A. That is right, and as if one is more detailed, this big
one, I think if we are trying to get detail on a specific
site, it is useful to use it and you can see the vegetation
       markings on it.

MR. MORRIS: Thank you very much. I think we have finished.

MS. STEEL: I do not know whether this matters, but I do not
know whether Mr. Monbiot ever shows us the Phyto
       geographical area?
       A. I do not know whether that is something that ought to
be dealt with that he mentioned very early on.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What was the Greek word meaning "Phyto"?
       A. It is a plant.

  Q. A plant?
       A. It is basically the botanical region which, again, is
       very hard to ----

  Q. That is all I wanted to know. It is obviously an ancient
Greek word originally and it meant "plant", did it?
       A. That is correct.

MR. MORRIS: This map would be explained, the phyto-geographical
       region?
       A. Yes. That is correct.

  Q. No further questions. Thank you.

                   Cross-examined by MR. RAMPTON

  Q. In English it means, "where you find what kind of plants"
       does it not, phyto-geographical?
       A. That is correct.
