Day 269 - 25 Jun 96 - Page 69

Crawford has said because I did not want to slow things
down, as it would have done to a very large degree if it
had attempted to get a full note.

MR. RAMPTON: Your Lordship will get complete set of transcripts
at the end of the evidence anyway as will---

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think at the moment I am getting it on a
delay basis but my point with Professor Crawford is, it is
particularly important that for instance, the various acids
are properly identified, or it may be, and I know the
Barnett Lenton have ways of checking, but it may in this
case, if you are prepared to help Professor Crawford, mean
that you may actually be sent some pages of the
transcript. You will not be asked to pass any comment on
it, but you may be asked to make sure that the spelling of
this acid or that acid is correct?
       A. We have been having conversations and I will be pleased
       to do that.

  Q. I understand that but if it has become too large an
exercise to actually do in Court while you are here?
       A. There is no problem with that.

  Q. We would be grateful for your assistance later?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Thank you.

MR. RAMPTON: Have you still got open the page of your later
       report, the latest statement?
       A. Yes, indeed.

  Q. Under the heading "Indirect effect" which is at 2.2."
       A. Yes.

  Q. Second paragraph you have written: "There is no doubting
the fact that death from heart disease rose strikingly from
1950 to the late 1980's in parallel with the rise in the
amount of dietary saturated fat and associated
       trans-isomers."
       A. Yes.

  Q. Do you think 1980's might not be a misprint for 1970's?
       A. It plateaued 80's, that is true. I do not mind in you
wish to take it before it began to plateau at the beginning
       of the 80's.

  Q. I am not willing to accept a plateau. I have got what I
think is a flat mountain which starts to descend. I will
show to it you. It is in COMA 46?
       A. Yes, the book on the British Heart Foundation
statistics gives the diagram from which I was working and I
am happy to change that to 1970's.

  Q. I did ask to be sent your references, but it did not
       happen.

MR. MORRIS: Well, I offered them this morning but nobody wanted
       them.
