Day 003 - 30 Jun 94 - Page 12

     1
         Q. Tell me, when you and your family eat McDonald's food
2 during the course of a week, let us say, what other sorts
of things do you eat during the course of that week?
3 A. I balance my diet. My wife makes a point of that.
Even if she did not, I am certainly aware that your body
4 requires carbohydrates, it requires proteins, just like it
requires sleep and exercise. There has to be a balance to
5 what a person does if they are to remain fit and in peak
              health.
     6
         Q. So, do you eat plenty of vegetables?
7 A. I eat vegetables. I love asparagus, green beans.

8 Q. Do you eat brown bread?
              A. I do -- not every day.
     9
         Q. Do you smoke?
    10 A. Never have.

11 Q. Do you drink alcohol?
              A. On occasion.
    12
         Q. Mr. Preston, how old are your children?
    13 A. I have a daughter who is 18 and a daughter who is 13.

14 Q. Can we go back in time? You have worked for McDonald's
for most of your adult life; is that right?
    15 A. I have since the time I was 16.

16 Q. Can we go back to the time when your children were small.
I dare say the 18 year old makes her own decisions
    17 nowadays in some matters?
              A. Most of them, yes, I think so.
    18
         Q. Can we go back in time to the time when your children were
19 small? Did you take them to McDonald's restaurants in
              those days?
    20 A. Yes.

21 Q. Did they ever ask to be taken?
              A. Occasionally.
    22
         Q. In your household, at least, who made the decision whether
23 they should have a McDonald's meal or not?
              A. My wife or myself.
    24
         Q. Can we go back to this part of the leaflet, please,
25 Mr. Preston? It says this -- forget the first part of the
passage under the heading that I have just read; we will
26 come back to the nutritional guides in due course -- the
second paragraph: "What they", that is McDonald's, "do
27 not make clear is that a diet high in fat, sugar, animal
products and salt (sodium)", in case anyone did not know,
28 "and low in fibre, vitamins and minerals - which
describes an average McDonald's meal" -- pausing there,
29 does that, do you feel adequately describe an average
              McDonald's meal?
    30 A. It does not.
