Day 100 - 09 Mar 95 - Page 50

MR. MORRIS: OK. What is the concern, anyway, as far as you
know from your department end, if you like?
       A. Well, the only reasons I can think of for not using
hormones is, one, possibly cruelty to the animals and, two,
they are chemicals that you do not want again in the food
       chain.

  Q. Why do you not want them in the food chain?
       A. I do not know enough about the chemistry really. I
would say that we do not want them in the food chain
hormones -- you would never want to introduce artificial
hormones unless you are having a sex change or something
       like that.

  Q. Again like with the antibiotics (it is slightly different)
it may get transferred to the human body?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know about this?
       A. I do not know whether it is transferred at all, I am
       sorry.

MR. MORRIS: Are you aware there was -- I can refer you to a
document. It is a Defendants' document.

MR. RAMPTON: No, my Lord I do not think he can. It is the
magazine article that was disclosed the other day with a
view to Mr. Chambers cross-examination. It was not used
then. I did not have occasion to make objection to it.
I rather doubt whether he can be referred to it.

MR. MORRIS: If you turn to the Defendants' document in
       our -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What are you doing now?

MR. MORRIS: I am asking the -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why do you not just put something to him if
you can? By all means for your own purposes use that, but
why not just ask him a question?

MR. MORRIS: Are you aware recently of publicity around a survey
done by Which? or the Consumers Association regarding
hormone residues found in beef in this country?
       A. I am not familiar with that, no.

  Q. You did not even hear about it? It was on national
       television.
       A. I have not seen it, no.

  Q. Does McDonald's try to keep abreast of these kinds of
       concerns and developments?
       A. Of course.

  Q. Would you be concerned if the Consumers Association found
hormone residues in beef supplies in, well, throughout
       Europe effectively?
       A. Yes. Since we specify that we will not take meat that
       contains hormonal residues then, yes.
