Day 078 - 26 Jan 95 - Page 61
Q. In other words, if they were kept chained all day, as long
they had food in front of them they would be happy?
A. I do not know of anybody who chains any steers.

Q. I am not saying they are, but I am trying to clarify what
you are saying.
A. Well, will you say it again and I will pay attention to
it?

Q. In terms of they respond to food, not to the environment,
which is what you said yesterday?
A. Yes, that is true.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I do believe that Ms. Steel ought to put
to Mr. Walker, who apparently does have some experience of
farming, what are the conditions in the environment besides
thirst and hunger which she says would be apt to make a cow
or a steer or heifer unhappy or miserable, or whatever the
term is that is used, so that he can deal with it.

MS. STEEL: If they were shut in a barn all day or all through
the winter they could not get out at all?
A. If cattle are shut in a barn all through the winter?

Q. If they are kept in a confined space, they cannot go
outside?
A. If they are shut in a barn all winter with bedding and
with adequate food and water, those cattle will do well.

Q. What about in terms of -- I mean McDonald's uses a lot of
ex-dairy cows, does it not, or cows from the dairy
industry?
A. Culls from the dairy industry.

Q. What age did you say they were?
A. Well, a white shop cow is normally three, four years
old.

Q. What about in terms of having their calves taken away from
them when they are only a few days old, does that upset the
cows?
A. Yes. The cow will moo for its calf and the calf will
moo for its mother.

Q. Obviously that has to happen before you can take the milk
away for human consumption?
A. Yes, if you did not do that you would not have a dairy
industry.

Q. The meat that you are using is a part of the dairy
industry, it is interlinked?
A. The meat we are using is part of the dairy
industry -- yes, it is in two ways.

Q. In two ways?
A. Yes.

Q. Can you just explain what you mean by that?
A. One we have established that you have a cull cow from
the dairy industry which may not conceive; it may not yield
