Day 158 - 19 Jul 95 - Page 24

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I mean, I am not saying you are wrong but
where do we get that from?

MR. MORRIS: That is my belief.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is there anything in Mr. Shane's statement
you want to direct me to? I remember that he had something
       to say about US beef.

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: But did he have something to say about
       Brazilian rain forest?

MR. MORRIS: I will check that. If I just finish referring to
this particular paragraph: "... 244 per cent between 1975
and 1978 of the Territory of Rondonia, 193 per cent in the
state of Goias", which McDonald's admits having received,
well, they admit that their most northern-most suppliers
are based in that State, "and 160 per cent in the state of
       Para", which is another matter.

Then it says underneath that: "Additional information
pertaining to cattle ranching and related activities in the
tropical forest areas of Latin America is required in order
to more completely assess the problem of tropical
deforestation". Therefore, the implication here is that we
are talking about tropical forest which, as far as
I understand it, is rain forest.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: In fact, we cannot see or I cannot see the
tropics on the coloured map. But you are assuming, and for
all I know you may be right, but I do not know at the
moment that tropical forest is synonymous with rain forest.

  MR. MORRIS: Yes ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I mean, if one start from the fact it means
forest in the tropics, is all forest in the tropics
       rain forest?

MR. RAMPTON: No, my Lord, no, it is not. My Lord, it is now
Costa Rica and there can be no question ------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am asking Mr. Morris. I do not know. If
all the lined areas on the coloured map are in the
       tropics ---

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I can tell your Lordship that -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: -- dense forest and sparse forest is in the
       tropics as well.

MR. RAMPTON: Yes, that is absolutely right. In fact, my Lord,
the tropic of Capricorn which is the southerly of the two
tropics runs slap bang through the middle of Sao Paolo.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is the sort of line and comes out at
Salto Augusto on the other side. That is the line addition
       to the ---
