Day 173 - 16 Oct 95 - Page 27

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It gives me an indication of the area in which
he was working at the time, in paragraph 2. It does not
say precisely what he was in 1979.

MS. STEEL: (To the witness) McDonald's Hamburger Restaurants,
that is the UK Company, is it not?
       A. I believe so, yes.

  Q. Right. Frank O'Donnell and Bell Brannigan and O'Donnell --
sorry, Bell Brannigan & O'Donnell, that was the name of the
solicitors you were employing; is that correct?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. On page 970 -- and I am not going to go into the detail of
this at the moment, but if you want to get it to
       check -----
       A. Sorry?

  Q. It is in tab 59 of the pink volume.
       A. Sorry, what number?

  Q. Page 970. There is a memo from Mr. Copeland. You have
seen this before, presumably, have you?
       A. Yes.

  Q. That would have been instructions given to the solicitors
       from Mr. Copeland?
       A. Yes, but with my input, I would think.

  Q. With your input? Right. It says there: "Steve Copeland
       McDonald's Hamburger Restaurants"?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Which would be the UK Company?
       A. Well, by title it would have been.

  Q. Right.
       A. But this would have been typed by my secretary or one
of my secretaries -- in fact, by my secretary. So whether
she has the right title or not, I cannot comment on.

  Q. Presumably, Mr. Copeland would have had a look at it before
it was sent, would he not?
       A. I cannot recall that, but I am sure he would have, yes.

  Q. It appears from this that Mr. Copeland was in Ireland for
the start of the strike. Would that have been correct --
       would that be correct?
       A. No, that is not correct.

  Q. It is not correct?
       A. No.

  Q. So he was preparing this from what somebody else told him?
       A. Well, he would have been listening to what I have to
say, because I was very familiar with what was going on at
the time. So I would have been briefing him on exactly
       what was happening.

  Q. Why would you brief Mr. Copeland to brief the solicitors?
