Day 071 - 11 Jan 95 - Page 37

       A. I have, yes.

  Q. In that store?
       A. Yes, I have.

  Q. What, recently?
       A. This -- I have done -- I often do many trash walks
where I walk around the Squares just to see how things are
and pick up rubbish as I go along. When we first got the
dust cart, I had been out on six, seven mornings by myself
just to see how long it would take for a crew member to do
the same type of job and also to set an example to the crew
so they knew what they had to do.

  Q. You said in your evidence before, you did say something
about most of the environment/index.html">litter seemed to be take-aways, Haagen
Dazs, Safeways, Marks & Spencer and some cafes and, of
course, McDonald's, yes? Is that correct, that most of the
environment/index.html">litter is take-away, generally tends to be take-away,
       packaging?
       A. I would say also in general in any high street or any
residential area most of the rubbish that is created is
       from food packaging.

  Q. That especially applies to take-away? That especially
applies to take-away, consumable items that are consumed on
       the street?
       A. Yes, I mean, the whole range from sweet wrappers to
Coke cans to anything that is usable on the street.

  Q. So when your environment/index.html">litter patrols go out, are they particularly
concerned, though, to make sure they spot McDonald's environment/index.html">litter
-- I mean, honestly, be honest?
       A. They would obviously in their interests make sure that
all the rubbish was picked up to the best of their
ability. I would not say that they just picked up
McDonald's rubbish; they also pick up any rubbish.

  Q. So, is the situation now that you get approximately 10 bin
liners, well, between five and 10 bin liners a day
       collected by environment/index.html">litter patrols?
       A. Off the top of my head, I cannot say that is accurate
       or not.

  Q. Right, but you were trying to give figures, were you not,
       before?
       A. I was asked to give a figure, an approximation.

  Q. So, is that your figure that is approximate, between five
and 10 a week -- this is a day, is it not, five and 10?
       A. This was hazarding a guess; I cannot say whether that
       is true or not.

  Q. That is compacted by the patroller or compacted after it
has got back to the store?
       A. Well, when a bag is filled it is taken down to the
trash room, and in the trash room there is a machine for
compacting these -- the bin liners on the bags they use in
the dining area for the trash walks are thin, plastic.
When it is compacted it is compacted into a thick plastic
