Day 034 - 11 Oct 94 - Page 71
A. It is my conviction that if people have the
information in front of them they will decide for
themselves what choices they may wish to make.
I certainly would hope that people would follow a
healthful diet.

Q. One way of persuading people or getting people to follow
what you call a "healthy diet" is to scare the life out of
them, is it not?
A. I do not believe I have done that. I have tried in
every chapter to be reasonably objective. However, I can
tell you that the time that I have spent treating cancer
patients, treating stroke patients, scared the life out of
me. The times in nursing my father who has prostate
cancer has scared me very much, and I do not consider
these simply statistics; these are important issues.

Q. Nobody, least of all the Plaintiffs in this case,
considers that they are statistics or not important; on
the contrary, Dr. Barnard.

My Lord, there are some other sections of the book which
become a little bit closer to the issue and a little bit
more technical. I could deal with one of them now and
come back to the rest tomorrow. I am entirely in your
Lordship's hands really.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You pick a time which is convenient to you.
I am happy to adjourn now or we can go on a little longer.

MR. RAMPTON: The trouble it will mean fishing out other files.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will break off now.

MS. STEEL: We are not trying to rush or anything, but we
wondered if there would be any indication from Mr. Rampton
about roughly how long he is likely to take. Mr. Barnard
has booked a flight, but he can change it if necessary.

MR. RAMPTON: I am not fussed, my Lord. I shall take as long
as it takes which is likely to be all of tomorrow. If
Dr. Barnard wishes to go back to the United States either
before then or immediately after then, then he will simply
have to come back again.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I would like to avoid that. When is your
flight booked for at the moment?

THE WITNESS: Thursday morning.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is that, as it were, a positive fixture or
something which could be put off if necessary?

THE WITNESS: If necessary I could change that.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I do believe it would be prudent to move
it to Friday.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. It is important that you finish your
evidence.
