Day 060 - 02 Dec 94 - Page 72

  Q. I am asking if that statement is true.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Put it this way: Is there anything about
what appears on that page 684, published in June 1990,
which you would wish to modify in the light of the US 1991
report or any other information received since?
       A. Well, yes, we made that point earlier. A lot of the
information that came out in the US report (which I said
I never saw a detailed copy of) would have changed that
statement, there is no question, had it came out before
       that statement was issued.

MR. MORRIS: Did you have any information in this country to
back up your claim that foam packaging is more energy and
resource efficient to produce than paper or cardboard when
       this leaflet was written?
       A. I was not involved with this department when this
leaflet was written, so I cannot honestly answer you.

  Q. But this is about packaging which is your area, is it not?
       A. Yes, but I do not know where this particular statement
       came from.

  Q. I would put it to you that there is not any information as
to that effect because, in fact, it is not true?
       A. You can put it to me, but there is no fact. I do not
know where the statement came from. There may well be
information. I think you should ask Perseco when you have
       them here.

  Q. I would have thought the Corporation, when it prints its
own leaflets, would check out its facts?
       A. I am sure they did, but I do not know where the
information came from, who was responsible for that
statement. I was not involved with these publications at
       that time.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is a PR department production, it says?
       A. Yes, but I was not involved with it until a year later.

MR. MORRIS: Who would have been involved then at that time in
the PR department producing these kinds of leaflets?
       A. The department Head who at that time was Corinne Reed
Comfort who is mentioned in the earlier draft report you
referred to and no longer works for McDonald's.

  Q. If we move on to the next sentence which is what you were
saying about before about contrast, "The manufacture of
paper requires the destruction of trees and can pollute
water", What they are saying there is that, in their
opinion, because of their concern with the destruction of
trees and the possible pollution of water, the situation
would be even worse if they stuck to paper products, is
that correct, and that is why they are using, polystyrene?
       A. No, I think they are simply giving good and bad points
       of both kinds of package.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is a bit of a plug for polystyrene
packaging, is it not, that page? It may be, it may not,
