Day 005 - 04 Jul 94 - Page 59

1 styro residues being found in human tissue?
              A. No.
     2
         Q. Why did you not start using recycled paper for your
3 packaging in this country until round about the early
              1990s?
4 A. Recycled paper for our packaging?

     5 Q. Your paper packaging.
              A. Well, we buy most of our packaging within Europe, the
6 technology to give us what we wanted, virgin material next
to food stuffs, surrounded by recycled material in the
7 middle, just was not here. It did not come. It did not
arrive on the scene until about then.
     8
         Q. So if it had been available before then, you would have
     9 used it?
              A. It was not available so we did not. Whether it was,
10 I would have to weigh it up against the circumstances at
the time. That just was not the real world.
    11
         Q. If you found that it had been proven that it was available
12 in the 80s, recycled packaging material in large amounts
and that you did not use it, would you say that you had
    13 made a mistake?
              A. No.
    14
         Q. It would not have bothered you?
15 A. I would not say I made a mistake. Would it bother me
or not, I doubt it. I had to call them as I saw them at
16 the moment in time, with technology did not exist. We
have a programme of trying to buy as much as we can here
17 locally, supporting local business, supporting local
suppliers; trying to keep ourselves free of violent
18 exchange rate movements which affect our cost structure in
              a negative way.
    19
I would guess first and foremost we would have tried to
20 buy something here locally that existed, supporting local
business ans keeping us free from that financial worry.
    21
MISS STEEL: I just want to briefly move on to another
22 subject. You told the court that you instructed two firms
of private detectives to find out who was publishing this
    23 fact sheet, yes?
              A. Yes.
    24
         Q.   You stated, But I think, that they attended open meetings;
    25 is that right?
              A. Yes, I did.
    26
         Q. Was your intention by stating that to imply there was not
27 anything particularly sinister about their activity?
              A. That was a statement of fact.
    28
         Q. Did you instruct those investigators to follow people home
29 and pry into their private lives?
              A. I did not personally say that to them, no.
    30
         Q. You told them?
