Day 260 - 11 Jun 96 - Page 65
Q. And who was doing leaflets and making other organisational
matters?
A. Yes.

Q. Can I just ask, taking letters from organisations that you
were investigating ------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I must give a warning -- I might have given
it earlier; it may be completely academic -- but I must
warn you that if you are asked a question, the answer to
which may, in your view, put you at any risk of being
proceeded against for a criminal offence, you need not
answer the question. You may well be aware of that from
your previous experience in evidence, but it is my duty to
give you that warning.
A. Yes, thank you.

MS. STEEL: Taking letters from an organisation that you were
investigating, which you have referred to in your statement
and in your notes -- sorry, in your notes rather than your
statement -- that would not be an unusual occurrence for an
inquiry agent, would it?
A. An inquiry agent would be required to obtain written
evidence if it were possible to do so, yes.

Q. So, it was the kind of thing that your agency might well
have been very well aware of that you might do, Kings
Investigation Agency?
A. It would be a possibility, yes.

Q. You say they did not give you a specific notice, "Do not
take any letters or anything else belonging to this group"?
A. No, absolutely not.

Q. Right. If we move onto the 20th September. Have you got
the notes?

MR. RAMPTON: It is 202.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 208, something like that.

THE WITNESS: Yes, I have it now.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 202?
A. 202.

MS. STEEL: Just before we move on to that, would it be an
unusual thing for inquiry agents to bug telephones?
A. Yes.

Q. It would be?
A. Yes.

Q. Were you aware of that being done in the case of
London Greenpeace?
A. No.

Q. Is that not your line of -- I do not know - have you ever
done that kind of thing?
A. It is an illegal activity.
