Day 266 - 20 Jun 96 - Page 27
A. I found page 35, yes.

Q. You have. Excellent. Just cast your eye over little Roman
3, which is the second complete paragraph on the page. It
may have been read this morning, I do not know?
A. You mean the bit starting: "Energy value"?

Q. Yes, that is right. "Energy value" in italics.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which page Mr. Rampton?

MR. RAMPTON: Page 35, the paragraph near the top of the page
beginning little Roman 3 in italics and starting at the
top: "Energy values".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: I asked the witness just to read over again that
paragraph, which is not very long (pause)?
A. Yes.

Q. Right. Now you said, I think, this morning that so far as
you know the proposals made by this panel, whatever it was,
in 1983 have remained substantially unchanged as a
consensus for good health amongst people like yourself. Is
that right?
A. Yes.

Q. So you would endorse, or approve, what is said in little
Roman 3 in that paper would you?
A. Would you ask me what particular part you want me to
endorse?

Q. "Energy values should be maintained because more exercise
throughout the population is to be encouraged." Agreed?
A. Yes.

Q. And then there is some stuff about the amount, about
reducing fat and sugar intakes, and then it says: "These
should be replaced palatively by low fat foods, mainly
bread brown and whole meal, potatoes, fruit and other
vegetables." Then it gives some quantities, and then
says: "This will probably mean increasing bread, potatoes
and fruit and vegetable consumption, each of them by 25-30
per cent. These changes will also have the desirable
effect of dietary fibre." Do you see any reason to
dissent from those recommendations?
A. The actual overall recommendations are pretty much the
same. In terms of the actual figures you will probably
find some differences, particularly in relation to dietary
fibre, although the actual recommendation remains the
same. There has been a big change in the way dietary fibre
is measured which leads to some differences in the figures.

Q. I am content to accept that. Then, can you pass down that
page, please, to an unnumbered paragraph which begins only
a few lines below: "The new" -- in italics --"total
diet." Do you see that?
A. No. Refer me to that again?
