Day 092 - 27 Feb 95 - Page 63

could have barley, cereals and a little bit of fibre,
       whatever is available.

  Q. What about protein from fish?
       A. Yes, you could have fish meal.

  Q. What about other animal protein?
       A. They are not typically used. You could have bonemeal
from beef bonemeal, but usually the only thing they feed is
       fish meal.

MR. MORRIS: Before we move off density completely, could I ask
a couple of questions about density?
       A. Sure.

  Q. Your figures leading to 36.1 kilograms is the typical
maximum, that was based on 20,000 birds, was it, in the
       shed?

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: 22,000.

MR. MORRIS: 22,000. So when the shed is up to 25,000 which you
said the figures were between 20,000 to 25,000, the density
       would be greater?
       A. In general, yes. Normally we only go to 22,000.

  Q. But sometimes it is between 20 and 25 you said?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Effectively, that means even it is 20,000 we are talking
about, according to your figures, one square foot per bird
       or less?
       A. Yes, pretty much.

  Q. Do you consider that each bird having something slightly
larger than this book to spend its life in
effectively, well, a square foot, do you consider
       that -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is not spending its life in one square
       foot.

MR. MORRIS: No, but in terms of ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 20,000 birds fully grown in 20,000 feet.

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Now put to him what you ----

MR. MORRIS: Mr. Rampton did say how would you like to -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is fair enough to illustrate it by size of
sheets of A4 and so on, but what we must be aware of is any
sort of picture of the bird standing immobile confined to
that space. I am not saying you do not have a good point.

MR. MORRIS: Well, would you consider that is effectively
       inhumane?
       A. No, it is not.
