Day 071 - 11 Jan 95 - Page 35

with carrying a bag, unless you sit on it, it is quite hard
       to compact it.

  Q. So before when you had the non-compactable system when the
bags often got full up, would it be that the environment/index.html">litter picker
would go out and once he had got a full bag they would come
back to the store? That is what generally happened, was it
       not?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So at that time, if you were going out half hourly, yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. And your stores opened from when?
       A. From 7.00 in the morning.

  Q. Till?
       A. Until midnight.

  Q. Which is 17 hours -- someone can challenge me on that if it
is not true -- would it be fair to say that there would
have been roughly about 34 bags a day collected at that
       time?
       A. No.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why do you say that?

MR. MORRIS: Well, every half an hour someone is going out and
getting a bag full and bringing it back.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, he has not said. He has said there were
occasions when more than a bag was collected and he said on
average, doing his best in what I should imagine are rather
difficult circumstances to make an accurate estimate, 10
       bin liners a day.

MR. MORRIS: What Mr. Stump has said was that they could compact
it now whereas before they could not, which is one of the
reasons they changed -- (To the witness): That is one of
the reasons you have changed over -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The 10 bin liners a day, was that since you
have had the barrow where you can use your trash mash, or
was it when you were going around with your dustbin liner
       picking up stuff?
       A. I am confused on whether you mean the trash that is
picked up by the bin men or the trash that is collected by
the people in the dining area.

  Q. No. We are just talking about -- this question was about
environment/index.html">litter patrols and how many bin liners they collected in an
average day. You made what might be the sensible point
that it would depend on the time of year, but being asked
to do your best to give an average you said about 10 bin
liners. Was that in the old days or the post-barrow days?
       A. Sorry, I never said 10. I did not make a -----

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I had thought at the time that your
Lordship or Mr. Morris, whoever it was, and the witness
were at cross-purposes or, rather, Mrs. Brinley-Codd did.
