Day 096 - 03 Mar 95 - Page 67
over that long number of years is concerned, is it your
view that goads used to cause your pigs pain or not?
A. I would not consider that they actually do cause
distress. They are only like two U2 batteries at the end
of the day in a container, so actually I think I could get
just as big a shock off my grandson's little electric car.

Q. Finally Mr. Bowes, stunning. You have explained clearly
why it is that having two pigs or even three pigs in the
stun pen at any one time does not achieve an overall
increase in the speed of the slaughtering?
A. No.

Q. What then is the reason for having more than one pig in the
stunning pen at any one time?
A. Comradeship, safety in numbers.

Q. Do you mean comradeship for the pigs or for the humans?
A. For the pigs.

Q. Would you rather have two or three pigs in a stunning pen
if you can at a time then a single one?
A. In a perfect world I would rather have two all the
time.

Q. Two?
A. Yes.

Q. That is the ideal, is it?
A. Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: Thank you Mr. Bowes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank your, Mr. Bowes.

THE WITNESS: Thank you sir.

(The witness withdrew).

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, may he be released.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, there is a matter which I have been asked
to mention and it is best I do so while it is fresh in
everybody's mind. It is this. Mrs. Brinley-Codd who is,
by and large, a very uncomplaining person, was recently
most upset by the conduct of the Defendants while she was
showing that film in two respects. The first is that they
sat in their seats and barked orders at her with hardly so
much as a please or thank you. The second is that without
any invitation or licence from her they have taken it that
they are free to use her Christian name not only in open
court but in private communication. Private communication
she can deal with, that is not a matter for your Lordship,
but she takes the strongest objection to that kind of I can
only call it boarish behaviour in open court. That is all
I say.

MS. STEEL: I was not barking orders. I was perfectly polite.
