Day 286 - 24 Oct 96 - Page 36
history of cattle going up and down." I said, "There has
been a particular boom in the last 30 years." And he
basically recognised that -- you can read -- it is a bit of
a complex interchange.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You say he agreed that basically the big
boom had been in the last 30 years.

MR. MORRIS: Yes. There are minor ups and downs during that
boom, but the general -- I do not think it is really
questioned anyway, really.

I mean, I do not know, I feel like there is not very much
left, but I am conscious -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I would like you to sit down and just read it
through and see. I would like to finish Costa Rica this
afternoon, if we can. Then you know you are making
progress and getting on through it.

MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not mind sitting here for a few minutes
while you look. (Pause)

MR. MORRIS: Actually, again, I am cutting a lot out of the
points that have already been covered.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: I mention that Dr. Nations does mention Costa Rica
in his article -- a very general point. (Pause) I think
that Mr. Secrett refers to Costa Rica, page 37. No, that
cannot be right. It was day 240. I do not know if you
plan to read Mr. Secrett's evidence, in any event. Maybe
if I can -----

MR JUSTICE BELL: I will. Certainly, I am going to re-read all
your rainforest witnesses and all your rainforest and
economic imperialism witnesses, and I will read the
transcripts of their evidence as well. In fact, they did
not take very long. So there is no need to say, "Please
read such and such." If you have got a particular point to
make, that is your opportunity to make it.

MR. MORRIS: No. Just that -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: When you or Miss Steel are addressing me
generally, it is part of my job to have a command of the
evidence. So the mere fact that you do not mention
something does not mean that it does not get taken into
account -- at least, if it is important.

MR. MORRIS: Right.

MR JUSTICE BELL: What is most important to me is that you
explain, at least in general terms, in relation to each
topic, what you do think is important, and then if you do
not mention all the evidence on that, even if you do not
mention any of the evidence on that, it is for me to
