Day 208 - 24 Jan 96 - Page 34

MS. STEEL: Yes, I am coming on to that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: For all I know, he may have some experience
       of that, direct or otherwise.

MS. STEEL (To the witness): You would accept that something can
be competitive if they are all very low?
       A. Yes, I would accept that, yes.

  Q. Would agree that Sainsbury's were paying a better rate of
pay or do you not know?
       A. I would agree they are paying a better rate of pay, but
I would also agree they are not a good company to work for,
having spoken to friends that are on management trainee
       schemes with them.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Does anyone have a copy which shows what is
       written beneath is better?
       A. I guess it would say "hours".

  Q. I am sorry?
       A. I guess it would say "hours". It looks like it says
       "especially hours".

  Q. I can see it may be "ESP" for "especially", but I am
puzzled by what comes after that.

MS. STEEL: It look like "sure" but I do not know, but it would
       not make sense.

MR. MORRIS: It may be "especially crew", but I do not know.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Mr. Cox has suggested that it is "hours", but
is there a copy with it on?

MR. RAMPTON: This, My Lord, is not the original. It is an
original copy, if that makes any sense. It does look very
much like "ESP. sure". I will pass it up to your
       Lordship. (Handed).

MR. MORRIS: I do not think it is going to win or lose the case.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us leave it there. It is not a matter of
life or death. It is not "ours" anyway, I do not think.
Mr. Riley, can you hand Mr. Morris his page back and let
Ms. Steel and Mr. Morris see the better copy? It is not
       really any better. (Handed)

MS. STEEL: I might as well ask, you do not have any direct
experience of what it is like to work for Sainsbury's, do
       you?
       A. Only what I have been told.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can someone remind me, if anyone knows, when
it was that the Bath rates were increased above the Company
       norm?

MR. RAMPTON: No, I cannot remember. I am not even sure what
       was said when it happened.
