Day 252 - 20 May 96 - Page 28

100 postprandial triglycerides may be atherogenic?
       A. Yes, I would say that this is an opinion which is not
a general opinion, that most people do not think or do not
believe that there is any evidence that implicates
triglycerides specifically in the development of
cardiovascular disease. It is a contentious issue. Some
people think it might have, others do not, but it is very
       unclear at the moment.

  Q. So you join issue even with "may" as a possibility?
       A. No, I would not, your Lordship. Perhaps, in 5 years
time, there may be a great deal of evidence come forward
which suggests that triglycerides are, but at the moment
all the evidence suggests that they are not.

  Q. It is something on which we simply do not have enough
scientific evidence so one can never dispute the word
       'may'.

MS. STEEL: So far as I can see the chart is measurements taken
after the -- the first row is the ones taken after they had
had a low fat diet for a month and then eaten the oral fat
loads and then had the blood measured, and the high fat one
is the high fat diet for a month and then the oral fat load
and then the blood measures for that as well?
       A. No, that is not what the table is about at all. I
think it states in the text, if I could read it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, take your time and then answer what
Miss Steel has put to you.
       A. The data in the table is the baseline levels before
       fat load was given.

MS. STEEL: Where do you get that from?
       A. When I went through this very carefully.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not hesitate to do so again.

MS. STEEL: In this letter it says exactly what I am putting to
       you, that it is after--

MR. RAMPTON: With great respect. If one looks at what (f)
       means?
       A. (f) means faster.

  Q. It says so in the first line of the abstract and then that
is repeated just above the table. It is jolly difficult to
       read.
       A. So (f) is the baseline values an PP means
postprandial, and that means after they have had this
       enormous load of fat.

MS. STEEL: I take it you understand what I say, which is if you
look at the first page of the statement it says that "the
aim of the study was to determine whether a diet high in
total and saturated fat had an adverse impact on the
ability to break down the blood fat in a rich fat meal".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The witness must have the letter.
