Day 297 - 08 Nov 96 - Page 29

and it was something like 78 grams of fat per day, which
was equivalent to the, I think it is, UK recommendations of
either 30 or 35 percent of calories in the diet coming from
       fat, as a maximum.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, I remember you mentioning that.

MS. STEEL: Obviously, our position is that the maximum should
be a lot lower than that.

So here they are talking about a risk of 40 percent
increased risk of death at a rate of fat intake which is
half of what is the maximum recommended in the UK, although
       that is --

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, I will look up the reference. You
cannot remember where the risk started? I mean, I remember
quite late in his evidence I think Dr. Barnard said it
started the moment you had any animal fat at all. But I
will check on that point. Anyway, I have the reference for
       it.

MR. MORRIS: That was the same view as, I think, Professor
       Campbell as well.

MR JUSTICE BELL: Yes. May be I am thinking of Professor
       Campbell.

MS. STEEL: Dr. Barnard said that persistent oestrogenic
stimulation in women caused by high fat and obesity
affecting oestrogen levels increases their risk of
disease. That was day 24, page 25. This evidence was well
accepted as far back as 1985. Day 24, page 26.
Dr. Barnard referred to Toniolo's study, 'Calorie-providing
Nutrients and the Risk of Breast Cancer', which showed that
women on a lower fat diet had a substantially lower risk of
breast cancer. That was day 24, page 38.

He then referred to a report by Kinlan, 'Fat and Breast
       Cancer'.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What was that report? The first one.

MS. STEEL: 'Calorie-providing Nutrients and Risk of Breast
       Cancer'.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Who wrote it?

  MS. STEEL: Toniolo.

MR. RAMPTON: That is one word?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. I am sure I will find it. I just
       wanted to make a note.

MS. STEEL: I cannot remember how it was supposed to be
       pronounced.

MR JUSTICE BELL: And the second one?
