Day 021 - 29 Jul 94 - Page 69
1 be cross-examined by me how to the effect that
vegetarianism is in some senses irresponsible or
2 dangerous, which in some senses it may or may not it be, I
do not know, then of course that would let all that stuff
3 in by way of re-examination, that is quite clear.
4 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have to say at the moment I see any
evidence as to whether it is healthy to be a vegetarian or
5 vegan is completely beyond the touch line of this case.
In fact I am not sure whether there is even a foot in
6 play, but that is a matter which can be for later on.
7 MR. RAMPTON: The point I think Professor Wheelock was trying
to make last Friday week and I was emphasising today is
8 that whoever you are, whatever you eat you have to be
careful, and the people who advise you what to eat have
9 also got to be careful.
10 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, we will see.
11 MS. STEEL: If this is brought in as an issue, then the length
of the case, the length of the trial could triple because
12 we will want to call a lot of witnesses on this.
13 MR. MORRIS: That might be a slight exaggeration.
14 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I would not worry about the vegetarian
aspects. I cannot at the moment see myself in any
15 judgment making any comment -- please listen to me until I
have finished -- I cannot at the moment see myself passing
16 any comment on whether a vegetarian or vegan diet is a
good thing or not.
17
MR. MORRIS: I presume we are basically finished now.
18
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, we have finished with Professor
19 Wheelock.
20 MR. MORRIS: Yes.
21 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you very much, Professor Wheelock.
You are released.
22
(The witness withdrew).
23
MR. MORRIS: I do not know if you have any legal matters you
24 feel are outstanding?
25 MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, I do not.
26 MR. MORRIS: The only thing which I feel quite strongly would
be very helpful for all parties would be to have a new
27 index for the bundles, because I do not how efficient we
have been in inserting all the things in the right places
28 that have been served. There have been a considerable
number of documents served. Obviously the plaintiffs are
29 keeping a handwritten update on their indexes. I think if
we are going to go into a continuous 17-week or whatever
30 trial after September, it would be better if we start off
at least with the same index and then we have a system
