  Q. Is there anything in that article that you disagree with?
       A. I do not think so.

  Q. You were having particular difficulties recruiting, in
particular, 12 stores in the South-East?
       A. In certain areas very difficult to recruit.

  Q. That was why you brought in the experiment of recruiting
workers over the age of 50?
       A. No. I think what it is is that we knew the
demographics were changing and there was a fall-off in the
number of young people in the country nationally, so
everybody would be fishing in a much smaller pond for staff
and we were starting to develop programmes to attract
       people into the organisation.

  Q. So previously you had been fishing in the pond of younger
       employees?
       A. There were more people about, yes. It was anticipated
that by the turn of the century there would be much less
young people about and, therefore, we introduced new
schemes to attract people into working for McDonald's.

  Q. You said a few moments ago that you do not think McDonald's
had ever had what you would say was a difficulty in
       recruiting staff and retraining staff?
       A. Not generally.

  Q. Retaining staff.
       A. Not generally. There are difficult areas most
       certainly.

  Q. Would it be fair to say that you have had a particular
difficulty in London and the South area?
       A. No. There are parts of London and the South in which
       it is difficult to recruit.

MR. MORRIS: We are just trying to find a memo regarding the
       employment of children under 16.

MR. RAMPTON: Is this a memo from Mr. Nicholson himself, if so
       I know where it is?

MR. MORRIS: We have found it.

MS. STEEL: If you could get pink XII?
       A. Yes.

  Q. If you could turn to tab 51B, please, which is right at the
back and then turn to page 715G.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is this 12, did you say?

MS. STEEL: Yes, that is right.
       A. Yes.

  Q. This is a letter from Carmel Flatley.
       A. Yes.
