Day 097 - 06 Mar 95 - Page 50

  Q. Is it covered?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, he said a covered holding yard, straw
       bedded, feed and water.

MR. RAMPTON: What about ones that arrive and do not have to be
kept overnight because they are needed immediately, what
       happens then?
       A. They go into a lairage to await slaughter.

  Q. Are you familiar with the Ministry of Agriculture's
guidelines on the treatment of red meat animals at
       slaughter?
       A. I am familiar with it, yes.

  Q. Could I ask you to fetch from behind you in the shelves a
yellow backed file with Roman IX on it entitled "Rearing
and Slaughter"? Please turn to tab 8 in that file where
you should find a written statement which you made for the
purpose of these proceedings. Do you have that?
       A. Yes.

  Q. If you turn behind it you will find, I think, two
appendices, one is appendix TNC1 -- we will look at that in
a moment -- or it may be in the same appendix. I am
sorry. Behind that document which is four pages long,
sorry, yes, your page No. 129 at the bottom should be
"Welfare of Red Meat Animals at Slaughter", is it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is that a document that you yourself are familiar with?
       A. I have seen it, yes.

  Q. Now turn back, please, to the beginning of that appendix.
This is perhaps a leaflet or something, I do not know, but
this is not its original form. You need perhaps easily to
read it to take it out, to turn it sideways. Page 125 it
should have at the bottom. This is entitled: "The Welfare
of Red Meat Animals at Slaughter", "Stunning and Sticking"
is the first part. If we turn over two pages we come to
"Pre-slaughter handling", do you see that? Do you have
       that?
       A. Yes.

  Q. These documents appear to have been issued by the Ministry
of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food; is that right?
       A. I think that is right, yes.

  Q. It says in the left-hand side of the first page: "These
pocket notes are for slaughter staff involved in stunning
and sticking of live animals". Do you see that, the
       left-hand column at the top?
       A. Mine says "Handling live animals in the lairage", this
       side. Page 127, was it?

  Q. No, sorry. 125. It is my fault.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: These are short carry-around notes based on
the Code of Practice itself, are they?
