Day 254 - 22 May 96 - Page 29

divided the numbers up is on page 360.

  Q. As far as I can see, the two charts are of two different
       things?
       A. To what?

MR. MORRIS: The total in the second chart is only a few
thousand, it is not 300,000 is it?
       A. Sorry? The one study that they have excluded, as they
point out in their commentary ----

MS. STEEL: The study on the?
       A. The Adventist Health Study.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well.

MS. STEEL: One other point is that ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can we just pause a moment? It may be,
I have not checked through, that the numbers in figure 1 on
page 360 are the -- I was trying to work out whether they
came in fact to 490, which is the figure 4,980, which is
the figure in results. It is pretty close to that but my
mental arithmetic pegged out when I got to about the fourth
       or 5th number.
       A. Yes, essentially what they are saying in figure 1 is
       that ----

  Q. It is about, it is very close to 4,980?
       A. They are trying to take the risk of breast cancer in
       these groups of people.

  Q. But I think the point is that the figures, it seems to me,
I have not actually added up the total, but it comes to not
very far short of 5,000, would appear to be the 4,980 cases
       referred to in the results?
       A. Yes, my Lord. Because in this section what they are
doing is they are looking at the cases, because again on
page 359, on the bottom paragraph on the left, they are
looking at the result for post-menopausal women and they
       are quoting 3,465 case patients.

  Q. I see. Yes?
       A. So what they are trying to relate is the dietary fat
intake in those women in relationship to the fat intake of
       the group as a whole.

  Q. Yes. It refers to the figure 1 in the paragraph above?
       A. In risks, they are talking about cases.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, it seems to be a little short, I make it
       4,827.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.
       A. Which would explain it, this would be explicable on the
basis of it having excluded the Adventist Study.

  Q. I see.

MS. STEEL: Just on table 2 still, I am trying to go through
