Day 018 - 26 Jul 94 - Page 47

1 factor, but in this situation what happens is that you
have a battery which stores up a capacitor which releases
2 the charge when it is earthed out.

     3 Q. Like a shock?
              A. Yes, it is a build up of electric charge which is
     4 dissipated through the animal.

5 Q. It gives the animal a jab, does it, effectively?
              A. Yes, an electric shock.
     6
         Q. When you say "resistance" has the thickness of skin got
7 anything to do with it?
              A. Yes, and also the comment which you made earlier on,
8 was the amount of water on the animal. For instance, if
it had been raining, the animal had been exposed to rain
9 as they were led into the lairage accommodation, if they
were wet, you get current flowing over the surface of the
10 animal instead of through it, for example. There are a
              number of variables.
    11
         Q. The animals at both these plants, I think, were stunned by
12 the use of the captive bolt pistol?
              A. Correct.
    13
         Q. That is a thing like a pistol. There is probably an
14 illustration of one in one of your papers -- let me see if
I can find it. At the back of your statement in volume
15 yellow IX, I think it is, there is a paper which you and
others at Bristol prepared in 1987 for the government; is
    16 that right?
              A. You have lost me -- yellow IX, sorry.
    17
         Q. You have your report open there, have you?
18 A. You do not mean orange?

19 Q. Sorry, X. No, I do not mean orange, no. It is yellow IX.
              A. I have yellow IX, it says Louis David Walker?
    20
         Q. No. That file is yellow and it has the No. 9 on it. If
21 you turn to tab 10, which is where you ought to be
already, you are in your statement?
    22 A. Yes.

23 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think you are there now, are you?
              A. Correct.
    24
MR. RAMPTON: If you turn to the back of your statement there
25 are two addenda; the first addendum is a report which you
made, I believe, or your university did anyway -- all this
26 is supposed to be Daly and Whittington -- for the
government, I believe, is that right?
    27 A. Yes.

28 Q. Have you found it now?
              A. Yes.
    29
         Q. I believe it is dated 1987?
    30 A. Yes.
