Day 088 - 13 Feb 95 - Page 35
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. (Handed)

MR. RAMPTON (To the witness): I ask you simply to leave through
these documents which are all in similar form, Mr. Bowes;
notice the date which is the first entry and tell us now
what they represent?
A. Yes. Sir, may I just explain why this documentation is
so late because, quite simply, I did not read Dr. Gregory's
report until yesterday, and I was not aware of the point 4,
and so I knew we had done work where there was a difference
in this area. If I may explain just one thing on
this -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: When you say "his report", do you mean the
report which he wrote and signed some time ago ---
A. Yes.

Q. -- or some transcript of his evidence?
A. Yes, the report, or in the report -- was it in the
transcript of his evidence -- where he mentioned -- no,
that was in his evidence because that is where the
calculation was done. That is correct, and he calculated
with mathematical facts rather than the practical facts
that we have here.

MR. RAMPTON: Just tell us, you wanted to say one thing about
this?
A. Yes. On behalf of the Meat and Livestock Commission, I
would like to apologise for their computer. It described
pigs as "sheep" on here.

Q. Yes. Do you recognise these documents?
A. Yes, I do.

Q. What are they?
A. That is work that was done by John Goodman of MLC in
work in trying to assess what current was being used for
the stunning of pigs.

Q. At G.D. Bowes & Sons?
A. At G.D. Bowes & Sons, because we have a low voltage
system but it is high cycle.

Q. If you do not mind, so that the Defendants have a chance to
go through these, put them by for the moment. It might be
useful if you put them at the back of your statement which
is in tab -- that is where I will put mine -- 7 of the
yellow volume IX. Put it right at the back behind the
other documents. You will find there the freedom food
document, if you put these tables behind that. Is your
copy hole punched?
A. No, sir -- yes, it is the other side. I beg your
pardon.

Q. Just before we leave that topic, Mr. Bowes, why do you use
low voltage for your stunning?
A. We have done considerable work at our factory in
conjunction with different companies who specialise in
stunning, and the MLC and the University of Bristol, to try
to come to the most effective way of electrical stunning.
