that they even necessarily got the demonstration at all.

MR. MORRIS: Mr. Nicholson remembers the video monitors on, on
that demonstration in October 1989.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, not on the demonstration. That is where
I think we are -- (to the witness): Are you saying they
were on the demonstration?
A. No, they were switched -----

Q. Or are they the kind of video cameras I walk past at least
twice a day and even in my own chambers? When ---
A. They are awful, yes.

Q. -- someone at the top of the staircase was targeted by the
IRA, I had to walk past them several times a day, and they
just focus on a particular place or within a particular
span and someone can watch and monitor?
A. That is right. They are very, very limited in their
use.

MR. MORRIS: One of them, I think one of the photographs
actually shows it, is pointing towards exactly that area
where people would gather for a protest?
A. No, as a matter of fact, that one is pointing at the
entrance to our underground car park.

Q. Yes, which would take in where the cars come out and go
into the street?
A. Well, it would be able to swing part of the way round,
but it would not cover the street. It is focused on the --
that is a camera focused on the car park where we feel we
are vulnerable.

Q. Right. But your security cameras will include an angle
which covered the front entrance and that part, would it
not, because that is a likely place for security lapses, an
entrance way into the main parts of the building?
A. I am not quite sure what the coverage is on these
cameras. I have got to tell you, you know, they have been
introduced since I was the security manager.

Q. But it would be pretty incompetent to have security -----
A. They would cover the vulnerable parts of the building.

Q. Yes, including the entrances, for example?
A. Yes, but that is not an entrance. That is no longer
used.

Q. The front door is not an entrance?
A. That is not a front door. That is never used, that
entrance. The front door is in the middle of the visitors'
car park.

Q. You are telling me that nobody ever goes in and out of the
steps up to the double doors?
A. No, never.

Q. Never?
A. That used to be the front entrance when the building
