Day 053 - 22 Nov 94 - Page 48
I am not really sure about whether to go through the
various bits in the transcript. The problem is, I am aware
of what the time is and there are things that I could reply
to that were said yesterday.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have really got to leave it to you. How
many references were there?

MS. STEEL: There were quite of lot things where Mr. Rampton
just said, this was asked, this means such and such. I am
just trying to say as a general point I dispute
Mr. Rampton's interpretation of my state of mind. I do not
know it is particularly helpful to go through all of those.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will bear that in mind when I look at them
again.

MS. STEEL: You made reference, I think, to something that was
referred to during the cross-examination of Professor
Wheelock.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, I think that was 21st July, was it not?
It was sitting down with somebody eating a McDonald's meal
every day.

MS. STEEL: The point I would make, it was about risk, not that
you are going to damage your health in the long term, and
that that is consistent with the general point about the
recognition that their food is high in fat and low in fibre
and Professor Wheelock acknowledging that. It does not
indicate that I was specifically asking something in terms
of eating a McDonald's meal and getting ill just through
either one meal or in relation specifically to causation of
cancer. It is just talking about risk.

There was a point shortly after that as well, where
Mr. Rampton mentioned about me trying to get Mr. Wheelock
to answer a question about "link" and that I wanted a
direct answer. The whole point of my questioning him about
"link" in that section, that was connected to his
assertion that one study on vegetarian school girls and
anemia meant that if you had a vegetarian diet you were at
risk of getting anemia, and I was criticising the fact that
basically he was using double standards. There was a
considerable number of studies on cancer reporting an
association, but he was trying to deny there was an
association.

Just to refer you to the cross-examination of Dr. Arnott on
Day 22 on 12th September, on pages 7 and 8: At the end of
7, for example: "But when you actually look at carefully
controlled studies, such as prospective studies which have
looked at this, there is no consistency in the findings of
these studies. Many studies have found to demonstrate that
there is a relationship between the dietary factors which
have been implicated in these illnesses and the actual
illnesses themselves. There is no consistency".

Then I ask: "You mean they are not showing cause and
effect?" He says: "No. What I am saying is, there is not
