Day 095 - 02 Mar 95 - Page 49

  Q. But if you had a pet animal upon which you lavished all
good care without spoiling it to its detriment, even then
from time to time it might suffer some discomfort?
       A. Absolutely.

  Q. Or some fear, is that your point?
       A. My point is a simple fact that we have a pet
       animal -----

  Q. Is that your only reservation about it?
       A. Yes, my only reservation.

MS. STEEL: But there are some things that animals could do if
they were not kept in intensive farming systems, are there
       not?
       A. Again it depends on the animal.

  Q. Shall I give you an example to speed things up?
       A. Yes.

  Q. For example, you said that normally a chicken in the wild
would show nesting behaviour when it was going to lay an
       egg?
       A. Yes.

  Q. They cannot do that in a cage, can they?
       A. No.

  Q. So does it concern you they are not able to express that
       normal pattern of behaviour?
       A. We went extensively into this type of question when
I talked about it. It depends on how you raise the
animal. You should never look at it as a human being
because they are not. They are not aware of their
surroundings, so I do not see the need. If you have a
specific question which I have not answered I will be glad
       to answer.

  Q. So you feel it is acceptable for chickens, for example, not
to be able to express normal patterns of behaviour because
of the system of farming that you are using or that your
       suppliers are using?
       A. I have answered that question before. It is
       well-documented what I have said.

  Q. Could you just answer it yes or no?
       A. No. It is not a yes or no question.

  Q. You find it acceptable in some circumstances then?
       A. Yes, I do find it acceptable in some circumstances.

  Q. Why was this document sent over to you?
       A. Because we share a lot of information from both from
the US to outside and outside inside. It was sent to me
because that is what it says here. It has very good uses,
very good terms and definitions. Paul thought it was good
so he sent it to me.

  Q. So you were looking for some kind of definition to base
       your policies around?
