to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and
vigour". That, I suppose, speaks for itself, does it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. As a condition of animal welfare?
       A. Yes.

  Q. "Freedom from discomfort - by providing an appropriate
environment including shelter and a comfortable resting
area". The "comfortable resting area" as a specific
provision is a gloss on the original FAWC definition of
       April 1992, is it not?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Is it something that is important in relation to chickens?
       A. It is important and broiler chickens are provided with
       deep environment/index.html">litter housing.

MR. MORRIS: Is it possible to ask if there may be a spare copy
of this in court because I am finding it hard to follow?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Is this the one page that you are going
       to refer to in that?

MR. RAMPTON: Yes, my Lord. I am not going myself to refer to
any other part of the document.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. I wonder if someone could just lend the
Defendants that page for the moment and then a photocopy,
when he comes back, Mr. Riley will probably make a
       photocopy during the break.

MR. RAMPTON: It is the pig one, it is the third page.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you mind, Mrs. Brinley-Codd, just for a
       minute or two? Thank you.

MR. RAMPTON: I go on, if I may, to the third line,
Dr. Pattison: "Freedom from pain, injury or distress - by
prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment". I do not
suppose that requires any comment from you, does it,
       either?
       A. No, and, as I explained before, it would be part of my
       remit within my job.

  Q. I pass now leaving the fourth (which I want to come back
to) to the fifth: "Freedom from fear and distress - by
ensuring conditions and care which avoid mental
suffering". You have worked in or with or about poultry
for many years now, over 20 years, I think it is, is it not
        ---
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- in one way or another? How easy is it to detect fear or
distress, if they be different conditions, in chickens?
       A. I think chickens will show fear or distress in various
forms, moving away from whatever stimulus it is, rapid
movement, wing flapping -- they can show fear in their
       eyes.
