Day 091 - 17 Feb 95 - Page 33
livestock?
A. Not in relation to Staphylococcus, no.

Q. What have you heard about it in relation to it then?
A. This multiple antibiotic resistance strain of
Typhimurium, DT 104, that are referring to is a relatively
new organism which has emerged. I know that the Department
of Health or the Public Health Laboratory Service, rather,
are doing quite a wide survey along with MAFF to see -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Hold on a moment. You are looking at page
12. You are looking at page 12.

MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have not looked at page 12 yet. I have
only been referred to page 11, have I not.

MS. STEEL: I did actually say "go on to page 12".

MR. RAMPTON: I think, my Lord, we inadvertently changed course
in mid stream and we are now riding another horse which is
page 12.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Attracted by the fact that page 11 is
considerably shorter than page 12, I stuck with page 11.

MR. RAMPTON: Might I invite your Lordship then to read page
12? I think that is what the witness has probably read,
I hope so.

MS. STEEL: You were saying about the Department of Health or
Public Health Laboratory Service.
A. The Public Health Laboratory Service have isolated this
organism. They have found that it is a cause of food
poisoning. They have determined that it has got resistance
to several antibiotics and, as I understand it at the
moment, they are doing a quite widespread survey to find
the source of it.

We have co-operated at Sun Valley with that survey, and
this particular salmonella, type 104, we have never
actually isolated in Sun Valley at all.

Q. Is one of those antibiotics Trimethoprim, do you know?
A. It probably is, but I really do not know to be sure.

Q. So they are investigating the effects of use of antibiotics
in feed stuffs?
A. No. What they are investigating is that they are doing
a survey amongst farmers and producers up and down the
country to find where the source of this organism is.

Q. That is all they have asked you about then?
A. They have asked us to co-operate in taking samples and
we have agreed to do that.

Q. Samples of birds?
A. Samples at any point throughout the whole organisation.
