Day 261 - 12 Jun 96 - Page 40

  MR. RAMPTON: November 1989.
       A. Yes, I have that.

  Q. This is somewhat of a rare bird amongst your notes,
Mr. Pocklington, because it is typed rather than
handwritten. Before I ask you about this particular note,
can you tell me what was your method for recording what had
happened at these meetings in these notes; how did you do
       it?
       A. It was usual for me to make a handwritten report when
I had returned to whatever base I was going to at that
time. Occasionally, I had access to -- I recall for a
while I had the loan of a typewriter, which I occasionally
used, but my typing is so slow that I frequently did not
       use.

  Q. Within what sort of time of your getting away from the
meeting would you, generally speaking, tend to make notes?
       A. Probably within three hours of leaving the meeting.
That was the usual. Occasionally they were done the
       following morning.

  Q. Then would you give them, perhaps the next day, to the
       Kings people?
       A. Yes, I would.

  Q. What happened to them after that was up to them; is that
       right?
       A. That is correct, yes.

  Q. I am only going to ask you about the first part of this.
       You have written:

"As instructed I left the office at 10 a.m. on the above
date (29th November 1989). I travelled to the offices of
subject group at 5 Caledonian Road where I arrived at
10.30 a.m. On arrival....(read to the words).... Let me
into the premises. Shortly afterwards, Andrew Clarke
arrived. Most of the day was spent in answering letters.
This mainly involved the inclusion of the range of leaflets
and a covering letter, which in this case I was given the
       task to write."

Have you any memory now of what sort of covering letter it
       was that you wrote?
       A. I have not, but I can only say that, given my knowledge
of the subjects was somewhat sketchy, especially this early
on, I would have -- I can only have said that -- given a
short reply and saying, "Here are included some leaflets."
That is the only recollection I have of it.

  Q. Do you remember now which of the two people it was that
asked you to write that covering letter?
       A. No, I do not.

  Q. You say: "Many of the letters were from school children and
students who had specific questions about the environment.
In these as well as leaflets concerning environmental
issues, there were also included other addresses such as
