Day 078 - 26 Jan 95 - Page 56

MR. MORRIS: So it came up in a general discussion?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Rather than just a private chat?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Who was present at that discussion? Was it suppliers and
       executives of McDonald's?
       A. No, just Roberto and myself over a cup of coffee.

  Q. Mr. Oakley said that soya feed is used for cattle in the
UK, Denmark and Germany in the winter months. Do you know
if that is the standard throughout the whole of Europe?
       A. I do not agree with that statement.

  Q. What is the situation in Europe?
       A. Cattle in winter months are fed on barley straw, hay
       and silage.

  Q. What, throughout the whole of Europe?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Did you mean barley straw or barley, straw,
       hay and silage?
       A. Barley straw, sir.

MR. MORRIS: Is that the same throughout Europe?
       A. Pretty well, yes; with some concentrates, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why do you not ask Mr. Walker if he knows of
cattle fed on soya anywhere in Europe? He may have
experience of that, he may not have experience of that. He
may just say, "Well, I cannot answer that question. It may
happen somewhere. It has not come to my attention." Why
       not ask?

MR. MORRIS: Well, for example, in Germany in Bavaria, is it not
a fact that some percentage of soya is used in the feed
even if it is a small per cent?
       A. I could not comment on that because I do not know.

  Q. You do not know what they feed on in Bavaria?
       A. No, I have been to Bavaria. I have been on food lots
on Bavaria. I have seen silage fed to cattle in Bavaria,
but when you feed cattle also concentrates you feed them
concentrates to keep their mineral levels up, and unless
you know the formula of that particular concentrate I could
not tell you whether there is soya in there. The
concentrate that I use does not have soya in it.

  Q. So concentrates are used in some amounts in most European
       countries, are they?
       A. Yes because through the winter you have to keep their
       vitamin levels up.

  Q. But, apart from this country, you do not know the content
of the concentrates that other people are using?
       A. We are getting into a very different subject now, my
Lord. When you feed cattle and when you breed cattle it is
very competitive. I myself might want with my cattle to
feed them a concentrate which I believe is a good
