Day 127 - 23 May 95 - Page 31
Q. What reaction did that provoke in the Company?
A. Unfortunately, at the time, I was away on my maternity
leave, so I was not part of it, but I believe that the memo
you can see in front of you was a result of the
investigation of that accident.

Q. But you were not involved in the preparation of or the
decision to send this memo from Keith Smith that we see
before us?
A. No, I was not.

MR. MORRIS: Which one are we looking at?

MR. RAMPTON: 779, 7th September, 1992. (To the witness) When
did you come from maternity leave?
A. I believe it was in September. I cannot remember which
date it was.

Q. Was it before Mark Hopkins was killed?
A. Yes. Chris Purslow dealt with this in my absence.

Q. Chris Purslow, the independent consultant ---
A. Yes.

Q. -- who is coming later to give evidence?
A. Yes.

Q. This is addressed -- this is a corporate document from
Keith Smith, and it is addressed to "all store managers,
etc, etc, etc". Do you see that?
A. I do.

Q. "Subject: electrical safety. Date: 7th September 1992.
As you are all aware, all employees from president down
have a responsibility under the Act for the safety of our
employees. The level of accountability in the case of an
accident will to some extent be determined by the level of
knowledge of the people that are involved."

I want to pause there, if I may, Mrs. Barnes. It is all
very well having health and safety policies, training even;
how do you ensure that the people on the ground do or do
not do what they are supposed to or not supposed to?
A. Well, I suppose, to a large extent, it depends on
systems like the audit, but, also, managers leading by
example and following up, if they see anybody doing
anything that is dangerous, pointing it out to them, and
their complying with the systems and making sure that that
is seen.

Q. Can I put it like this: you have a company which employs
-- I do not know -- at the moment, something like 31,500
people in this country, do you not?
A. Yes.

Q. The majority of whom are working in the restaurants?
A. Yes.

Q. And the majority of those people working in the restaurants
are part-timers, are they not?
