Day 015 - 21 Jul 94 - Page 62

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Page 13, location of interview. Kentucky,
2 McDonald's, Wimpey and it looks as if it is a fish and
chip shop, the fourth one.
3
MS. STEEL: 10 per cent said they were using it less than once
4 a week and 7 per cent said they were eating at -- 7 per
cent of people coming out of McDonald's said they were
5 using fastfood outlets once a week; 49 per cent said they
were using them one to five times a week; 32 per cent said
6 they were using it once a day.
7 MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, were they saying -----
8 MS. STEEL: That they were using fastfood outlets, yes.
9 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Not just McDonald's specifically.
10 MS. STEEL: Not just McDonald's no, but bearing in mind these
places sell similar types of food. Does it concern you
11 that -----
12 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I suggest that you say: If that
information were accurate, would it concern you, or
13 whatever question you wanted to ask.
14 MS. STEEL: If that was right, would that concern you, that
people were eating that kind of food with that kind of
15 frequency?
A. First of all I should point out that I do not have
16 much detailed knowledge of the composition of the foods
from the other restaurant chains you have indicated there.
17
Q. You have no idea what Kentucky Fried Chicken and Wimpey
18 sell?
A. I have an idea what they sell. I am not familiar with
19 the nutritional composition of their products.
20 Q. Would you expect them to be more healthy than McDonald's
food?
21 A. I do not accept that one can apply the term "healthy"
to individual foods at all. You can apply that to diet,
22 but not to foods.
23 Q. Well, would you expect that the food sold at Kentucky and
Wimpey to be lower in fat and higher in fibre?
24 A. Well, I do not know, but with Kentucky I think the
main product is chicken, is it not?
25
Q. Yes. If we assume that the type of food they sell is
26 pretty similar to McDonald's food, would it concern you
that people were eating that kind of food with that kind
27 of frequency?
A. Well, if we accept your premise that -- and again I do
28 not have knowledge of the extent of the range of the
products in these other foods -- but if what you are
29 implying is that these people are eating a high proportion
of foods which themselves are high in saturated fat and
30 high in total fat and this makes up a high proportion of
their total diet, then, yes, I would be concerned.
