Day 070 - 20 Dec 94 - Page 31
sorry, plus pigs in this country, but I think that was
only -- then in America, I think, Dr. Gomez Gonzalez said
50 or 60, or something like that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: But what are you asking for? Do we know how
often the audits took place?

MS. STEEL: I gained the impression that it was not that
frequently. I cannot find the specific page in his
evidence.

MR. RAMPTON: This is a Tyson's audit form of its chickens, I
think. This is just one document. It is a sample; it is
not filled in. There is a note on it: "These are the
forms to document field servicemen's visits to farms, used
two times per week unless required to visit farm more
often."

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is what troubles me. If you were right
that there are 50/60 and each of those having about -- were
they having about a 100 audits a year, if they were similar
to Tysons? You have got 5,000 audits a year in the
United States -- I do not know whether that is right or
not -- and you are looking back over a number of years.

MS. STEEL: We were specifically asking for 1989 and
1990. When he was talking about audits, I did not get the
impression that it was twice a week; I got the impression
that it was maybe three or four times a year, or something
like that.

MR. RAMPTON: Ms. Steel is confusing visits by McDonald's staff,
which to slaughterhouses are occasional, to suppliers much
more frequent, and audits done by the suppliers at
McDonald's behest, where they themselves (and, in this
case, Tyson's, it is at their own establishment) do not own
the slaughterhouse. There is a McKey document which is
sent to the slaughterhouse which has a whole list of animal
welfare requirements in it. That is what Ms. Steel is
talking about.

I do not know that Dr. Gomez Gonzalez mentioned any kind of
a McDonald's internal audit form. What he did say was that
McDonald's either compared or helped to prepare the audit
form that the suppliers use; that he did say.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We have got the McKey audit form.

MR. RAMPTON: Yes, we have a sample of that.

MS. STEEL: That is in this country as well. That is only one
form that has not been filled in.

MR. MORRIS: Obviously, we do not need every audit form in the
whole world filled in in this matter. What we need is
something which helps in the case in providing evidence and
identifying whether the Plaintiffs are taking animal
welfare seriously and what they are finding -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I would have thought a sample of the form
