Day 046 - 04 Nov 94 - Page 67
A. Yes, the same persons are hired over a period of time.
Sometimes in markets that can use them all the time, they
are hired on a permanent basis, and other times they are
hired on an event by event basis. But over -- they may
have a long term contract, but it is paid for on an event
by event basis.

MS. STEEL: You said -- this is just like a little point that I
forgot earlier -- that you had competition in Japan from
other quick service restaurants; is that right?
A. That is correct.

Q. Was there that competition there when you set up in Japan?
A. I do not know. I know Kentucky Fried Chicken was there
before we set up and, as to any of the other competitors, I
do not know when they entered the marketplace.

Q. You do not know?
A. No.

MR. MORRIS: One further question, the last question: In your
statement, point 9, the last sentence, you said -- the
whole of point 9 is: "Obviously children are an important
target for our advertising as we want them to visit our
restaurants. We attempt to convey the message to them that
McDonald's is a comfortable and enjoyable place for them to
come to eat with their families by promoting the fact that
a meal at McDonald's is a fun social occasion to be shared
by the family. Therefore all", and I emphasise "all", "our
advertising is very pro-social and tries to promote family
values whilst also reinforcing the benefits of education,
good nutrition and being part of the community". Do you
believe, as it says there, that all your advertising is
promoting good nutrition?
A. No, I believe the "all" from the perspective of this
particular was meant to say that all of our advertising is
very pro-social and tries to promote family values. That
is where the "all" talks about.

Q. Whilst also ----
A. In addition, we reinforce the benefits of education,
good nutrition and being part of the community.

Q. So, in other words, good nutrition is not a core purpose of
your advertising then?
A. That is correct, but nutrition is reinforced by school
programmes and educational materials that go into the
school system.

MR. MORRIS: Thank you.

Re-examined by MR. RAMPTON

MR. RAMPTON: Mr. Green, you will be delighted to hear that your
ordeal is nearly at an end because I have very few
questions to ask by way of re-examination. Can I start
and go backwards, please? The question seems to be put
that you would like the whole world as your marketplace;
you would like to have every person in the world going into
McDonald's as often as possible. I think your response is
