Day 184 - 06 Nov 95 - Page 44
Like, Chris Broom was the one who called us; he is the one
who called us and said, "This is what you can do and this
is what you are going to have to if you do not want to";
and then I assumed Chris Broom went and talked to his
father. Like, I personally did not talk to Chris Broom's
father.

Q. On the weekend of Saturday the 2nd and Sunday, 3rd October,
you telephoned as many employees as you could, with
Chris Broom and Michelle, to ask them if they wished to
sign a petition. Calls were made from the McDonald's
office, were they not, from McDonald's to employees?
A. I never called from McDonald's.

Q. But some calls were made from the office -----
A. I never called them and, as far as I know, Michelle was
using a pay phone; and I do not know where Chris Broom was
calling from. I mean, as far as I know, none of the calls
were made from McDonald's. But I do not know.

Q. On 5th October, after the union's application for
certification had been made and you had organised a
petition by some of the union members to halt the
certification, a crew meeting was held at the restaurant.
Is this the one that we have the notes from?
A. Yes.

Q. Cam Ballantyne talked about the benefits and advantages of
working at McDonald's, you say; and in that note, when
Mr. Rampton was asking you earlier on, you said that he
said that unions promote by how long you have been there
rather than ability.
A. No. I said, from what he understood, he said that --
this is from his understanding of the unions -- he
thought -----

Q. Cam Ballantyne?
A. Cam Ballantyne -- he thought that this is the way the
promotions worked.

Q. Rather than on ability, it is on length of time that you
have been with the company. That is what you said,
anyway. The unions would seek promotion on the basis of
how long you have been at the company, rather than what
your ability was?
A. Sure; how good you were; like, how many stations we
knew, type of thing -- from what he understood; that is
what he said, from what he understood.

Q. Yes. That is Cam Ballantyne, the Store Manager. Do you
know of any -----
A. He is the owner.

Q. The owner, sorry. Do you know of any union agreement
anywhere in the world -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: She is not saying that this is so; she is
saying that is what he said.

MR. MORRIS: Yes, I understand that. (To the witness): But do
