Day 120 - 03 May 95 - Page 51
obviously, related to turnover, is it not?

MR. MORRIS: But for Head Office to know what kind of wage
increases staff members are getting, crew members are
getting, they would have to look at individual store audit
performance?
A. Or we could devise a programme which could pull it off
the computer. The easiest way would be to go to the store
record.

Q. Right. But you have never seen a report or summary of that
issue at Head Office?
A. No.

Q. So it has never been thought to be important enough to do
that task then?
A. To me?

Q. To your office, your Department?
A. That is right, to me, I have never considered it
necessary to produce that kind of report.

Q. You have said that in 1989 the Government decided to
abandon fixed rates for under 21s, is that correct, in
terms of minimum wage?
A. Yes, if that was the year.

Q. Yes, I am only just going from what you said in
evidence-in-chief?
A. I think it was 1986, was it not, was the last year?

MR. RAMPTON: It is, in fact, 1986.

THE WITNESS: Yes.

MR. RAMPTON: It was in 1989 that the employment of young
people, the law changed. I looked at -- this is a matter
of law so I am not giving evidence -- The Wages Act of 1986
last night, and that was the year in which the requirement
to set the minimum below the age of 21 was abolished ---

THE WITNESS: That is correct.

MR. RAMPTON: -- but the Wages Council went on making orders in
respect of people over 21 thereafter.

MR. MORRIS: In 1986 you were Head of Personnel?
A. Yes.

Q. What was your submission around that period to the official
body that was considering revising or abandoning those
protective laws?
A. I did not make a submission.

Q. Not you personally, but your Company?
A. I am not aware that our Company made a submission.

Q. Are you aware that they did not or are you aware, you just
do not know?
A. I am not aware that they did.
