Day 245 - 07 May 96 - Page 44

not like the answer to, our witnesses have been told that
       they must answer the question.

MS. STEEL: He is answering the question. You do not like the
       way he is answering it.

MS. STEEL: He is not answering what steps. I am not saying why
       he took the ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Please. Ask another question but do not
interrupt the witness until he is finished speaking.

MS. STEEL: I want to know what steps you took not why you took
them, or why you say you took them. I want to know what
       steps you took?
       A. If you let me answer I will. The first step I took was
to re-examine a document published by London Greenpeace
about its Aims and Objectives. I went back through it and
I examined that which it says. Contained in that document
is a "we are going to smash McDonald's". This is a primary
objective. In there is a statement about alignment with
animal liberations and, at the same time as this was
happening, we had had in the British Company four or five
       fire bombing incidents.

When I looked at that document, when I married together the
comments from licensees, from owner operators, from
managing partners around the world about: "This is
affecting our business. What are we doing about it?",
I decided to go forward. I did not do it on a whim, a
wish. I did it based on what was alarming facts to me
published in your document, married together with the
comments of my Managing Partners around the world. That
       simple.

  Q. Can you answer the question, please, Mr. Preston?
       A. I just did.

  Q. What steps did you take to stop the publication of the
       leaflet?
       A. That is what we did.

  Q. You read this leaflet. That is it, is it?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think the witness may be puzzled because he
has already said what steps he had taken.

MS. STEEL: I have not heard them.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: And you appear to be asking about more steps,
that may be the problem. You may be at cross purposes.

MS. STEEL: I have not heard him say what steps he took apart
       from reading this leaflet.
       A. What can I say? I can reiterate it one more time.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: He said he set about trying to find out who
was responsible, or words to that effect.

MS. STEEL: Right, so how did you do that?
