Day 192 - 27 Nov 95 - Page 23

signing people up. I did not know whether he was allowed
to sign a card or not at that point, so I approached him
about it. He said that he did not want to sign a card,
which was fine, but he also told me that McDonald's had a
protocol for everything, that they would shut me down, that
this would not work, that Head Office knew how to handle
       everything.

  Q. Did you ever speak to Chris Broom about ---
       A. Signing cards?

  Q. -- signing cards?
       A. Yes, I spoke to him. It must have been in September as
       well, because -----

  Q. At the beginning or middle, or -----
       A. Probably the second week, second or third week, because
I spoke to him at the high school, and we do not start high
school until after Labour Day weekend, in Canada. Yes,
I did speak to him about it. He had already known about
it, apparently, from Pete Mortson, because those two were
       best friends, I believe.

I asked him if he was interested in signing a card, and he
said "no". I asked him if he would keep it sort of
secretive, that we did not want management to find out at
this point, and he said, "Sure, no problem"; and, as far as
I know, he did not say anything.

  Q. In your second statement on page 21 -- you do not have to
go to it, if you do not want -- you talk about Rui Amorim.
What kind of person was he? He got involved with this
       union campaign, yes?
       A. Yes. He was the organiser that was sent by the union.
       That was his job.

  Q. What kind of person was he, in your estimation?
       A. I found him a very friendly man. He related well to
youth. I mean, he listened to the same type of music as we
did; he was into sports and hockey, and that type of
thing. I remember calling these unions, and when I got on
the phone with him I was kind of drawn back, like, stepped
back from it, because his voice was very deep and gruff.
But, actually, he was the best one from the union that
dealt with youth, because he was on our level. You know
       what I mean?

  Q. When you were you started asking people to sign up on
25th August, what did you say to people and what did they
reply? Take it slowly. What did you say to people?
       A. Well, I would go up to people at work and say, "What
are you doing afterwards? Can I set up a time? I want to
speak to you about something." They would say "fine",
"sure", or "no". I would pick them up from work, and
I would say to them, "What I want to tell you I want you to
keep to yourself"; and some of them would ask, "Well, can
I talk to my family about it? Can I talk to my parents?"
       "Yes, sure, no problem."

  Q. No problem in talking to your parents?
