25 in his office and told me to stop circulating the petition
26 or I would be sacked. My reaction was that I had nothing
27 to lose and that I had to take action during my period of
28 employment. I then decided to set up a section of the
29 CFDT" -- union -- "at the company and in doing so received
30 great support by the employees."

32 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I know what CFDT stands for? I had
33 assumed it is a union, but just a little more about it.

35 MR. MORRIS: Can you explain what the CFDT means?
36 A. CFDT is a union representing workers all over France
37 from all trades, for the defence -- in the defence of their
38 rights.

40 Q. It does come up later, but what is his current position in
41 the CFDT?
42 A. He was designated -- I was designated in 1992 as the
43 representative for -- the union representative for
44 McDonald's Lyon.

50 stop circulating the petition you would be sacked; what
51 does he mean by being "sacked"?
52 A. At that time, I was circulating a petition to address
53 the problems within the restaurant. The Supervisor of the
54 restaurant learned about this petition concerning these
55 problems. He called me into his office and he told
56 me: "I have learned that you were circulating a petition.
57 I would ask you now to stop circulating this petition or
58 I will throw you out", and that the workers, if the
59 employees were not happy they should just leave.
