Day 091 - 17 Feb 95 - Page 42
MR. MORRIS: It was after that, I think, that ----

MR. RAMPTON: The answer that I think Ms. Steel is thinking of
which, I am afraid, does not support what she has been
submitting, is page 38 line whatever it is but it against
time 14.32.36, page 38, line 22, at the bottom of the page.

"Ms Steel: There is also the concern of Furazolodone that
it is carcinogenic?

"A. Yes, although that has never been demonstrated as a
result of residue in meat".

Of course the questioning is double-barrelled.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I understood that to relate to concern, not
the fact of being ----

MR. MORRIS: Then go on.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What is the actual page and line reference to
that?

MR. RAMPTON: Then it goes on: "But that is the view of the
various bodies that have banned its use for animals in
forming part of the human food chain?

"A. Yes."

Where does that take us is what I am asking.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What we are looking for now, there is an easy
way round this. You can ask the question whether he
accepts that it was carcinogenic. I certainly have not got
the picture that he has so far.

MR. MORRIS: There is also concern with -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you give me a page and line, we are
looking back over about four pages of Case View.

MR. RAMPTON: Page 38, line 22, my Lord, against 14.32.36.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: "Q. There is also concern that it is
carcinogenic?"

"A. Yes."

That seemed to me at the time to be an answer that there is
a concern, not an acceptance that it is carcinogenic.

MS. STEEL: That was related to the last question which was
whether the only concern about antibiotics was whether
bacteria became resistant to them. That was the reason why
it was phrased in that way.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Ask the question again, but I am certainly
not taking from any of the answers so far that this witness
has accepted that Furazolodone is carcinogenic.
