Day 066 - 14 Dec 94 - Page 49
moment at least do not have any sheep products, do they?
A. No, that is correct, no, we do not.

Q. Let us have a look at the beef line, is what they have
called it, is this the sort of thing one could expect to
find in the United States or in Australia?
A. Yes, it is.

Q. South America?
A. It is fairly typical, yes.

MR. MORRIS: Can I ask a fairly obvious question?
A. Sure.

Q. Do we know if this is a current plan because may be we
might have to use it, I do not know.

MR. RAMPTON: I have no idea.

MR. MORRIS: You do not know if it is a current plan.

MR. RAMPTON: No idea. All I can tell your Lordship is that its
provision to us was prompted by the recent statement from
the witness Hovey.
A. I might add, that even if it is not current you will
not see many changes in the design of a plant. You might
see some changes in the equipment that is used but the
design is fairly typical.

Q. Before I ask you any detailed questions about it (and
I will not have very many of those), assuming that this
plan accords with the reality on the ground, does it seem
to you that it is a satisfactory sort of operation?
A. From looking at the design of the plant, yes.

Q. We start, as I said, at the cattle race on the left-hand
side of the sheet coming up into the cattle stun pen. In
your experience, do cattle ever go up -- I should put the
question a different way: In your experience, in what
numbers do cattle descend or go down the cattle race, in
pairs, three's, four's?
A. No, one at a time.

Q. When they get to the door or the edge of the blue box
marked "cattle stun pen", are they able to see what is
happening inside the pen or not?
A. It is difficult to see from the design, but normally
there is a door that is closed so that the animal will not
see what is ahead of him or the animal that is in front
will not see what is behind of him.

Q. Do not this as your guide in the sense you obviously cannot
tell since it is a ground plan?
A. Normally, that is the case.

Q. Give us a typical answer: Would the sides of the cattle
race be open, would they be walled or what would they be?
A. No, they would be walled. Normally, it is concrete
that is used as the walls and it is closed.
