Day 240 - 24 Apr 96 - Page 23
interesting to some involved in the case, even to me, but
does not help me on a vital issue.

MS. STEEL: I think in fairness to the witness it might help if
Mr. Rampton did not make provocative marks.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am not criticising. I have done my best to
make it clear. None of this is any criticism of
Mr. Secrett. It is just trying to concentrate on what is
relevance and what is not. It is no criticism of you
whatsoever, Mr. Secrett.
A. Thank you, your Honour, I entirely accept that.
I wonder if I could draw your attention to something that
I hope then does go to the matter in hand which is in the
letter to me dated 20th November from Annette Allen
following our meeting where she says in numbered paragraph
1:

"McDonald's USA and Canada has never purchased imported
beef from Central or South America for use in their
hamburgers".

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, I have read that.
A. In my opinion, that is not possible to prove.

MR. MORRIS: Shall we move onto the second statement now?
A. I am sorry?

Q. Shall we move on to the second statement?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Would you go to your second statement.

MS. STEEL: I just remembered one question: The names given for
attending that meeting that you went to were Mr. Terry
Carroll and Annette Allen. Are they the people that you
remember being at the meeting or were there others as well?
A. No, those are the two who I remember being present.

Q. Thank you.
A. There may have been a secretary or PA taking notes but
I do not think so.

Q. Right.

MR. MORRIS: Did you know that Terry Carroll was Head of
Security?
A. No, I did not know that at the time.

Q. I am going to read the second statement.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Do you have that?
A. I do, yes.

MR. MORRIS: Dated 18th April 1996:

"1. This second submission to the High Court has been
prepared by Charles Secrett, currently Executive Director
of Friends of the Earth (FOE) in England Wales and Northern
Ireland.
