Day 267 - 21 Jun 96 - Page 69
MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have to say that I am not at all well-up
on the various groups who are active in relation to animal
rights and if it is important to an actual issue in the
case that I keep the difference between one and another and
know about them, clear and know about them, you will have
to educate me about it.

MS. STEEL: Well, there is one group. Hackney and Islington
Animal Rights Group which is the group that was basically
organizing all the antiMcDonald's literature at that time.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have no difficulty remembering that because
it could have an acronym HAIR and therefore I could
remember that. If you are--

MR. MORRIS: I would like to be able to finish early today if
possible. We will definitely be finished by 1 o'clock on
Monday.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is up to you. You can break now. My
concern is you finish by 1 o'clock on Monday.

I have made that a deadline. My experience is it sometimes
helps you if I tell you how long you have got.

Now the other aspect is this. Thank you Mr. Claire. Will
you be back in time to start again at 10.30 on Monday
please?
A. Yes, my Lord. (The witness withdrew)

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If there is any possibility of you wanting
Mr. Bishop or Mr. Pocklington back, and I am not suggesting
they should be because of the new notes you have got, I
think you should tell Mrs. Brinley-Codd that first thing on
Monday morning because then she can see for instance
whether there is -- and you must say, give an indication of
how long they will be required. You know, say is it a
couple of questions or is it half-an-hour or what because
if that is so, we have got to think when they might be
slipped in.

Mr. Rampton, if Mrs. Brinley-Codd can make some
inquiry as to whether, for instance, if they were required
they would be available on Wednesday in case there is time
then, well and good, because what I hope to have done by
the time we adjourn on Wednesday, if we sit on Wednesday is
to have finished Mr. Clare, finished Professor Crawford,
dealt with any recall of Mr. Bishop or Mr. Pocklington was
it not because Mr. Russell, the state of the evidence at
the moment, there was no other inquiry agents and certainly
no notes had been disclosed. So that when you know whether
your appeal has been successful, wholly or in part, or not
at all, you can then, very promptly, make your decision as
to who you want to call and get straight on with those
witnesses. So I would like you to give some thought before
the Appeal. I would like you to consider because you know
your grounds and basis of appeal and I do not, what the
various permutations are, depending upon whatever the
result of the appeal is. So that you can make a decision
immediately.
