Day 276 - 09 Jul 96 - Page 44

  Q. Can you remember me, that I might have spoken about the
anti-McDonald's campaign and given some background?
       A. I can't remember to be honest, but it is possible.

  Q. Right. But it is the kind of thing that I might have done
if a new person was there or something?
       A. Well, anyone would do it who had got any kind of -- who
had been either along on a regular basis or had some kind
of long standing knowledge of the group. Anybody would do
it if whoever was talking about a particular subject, you
know, forgot to explain the background. So that would
       include you.

  Q. Right. You said some time ago about the background to the
group as a whole. Did I sometimes mention what the group
       was doing in the 70's?
       A. I think so, yes.

  Q. Talking about the history of the group, a lot of the London
Greenpeace leaflets, including aims. Do you remember the
aims, so called aims leaflet --
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- has a symbol in the corner? Do you remember what that
symbol is? I have not got a copy of the leaflet in front
       of me, but?
       A. The London Greenpeace symbol?

  Q. The London Greenpeace symbol, yes?
       A. It is a broken rifle.

  Q. Do you know what the broken rifle symbol?
       A. It is a pacifist symbol.

  Q. Right?
       A. A pacifist antimilitarist symbol.

MR. MORRIS: I cannot actually find a copy.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, I can remember it perfectly well. You
say "rifle", I was going to say it was a broken gun?
       A. It was always referred to as a "broken rifle" when it
       was described.

  Q. Sorry, it was always spoken of as a broken rifle?
       A. Yes. I think there is other peace groups that have a
similar broken rifle badge or symbol.

MR. MORRIS: Do you know what the cross bar in the broken rifle
       symbol symbolises?
       A. I can't even remember what the cross bar is.

  Q. It is on the London Greenpeace banner that was at the
demonstration on October 1989, I think, I might be wrong.
It does not matter if you do not know?
       A. I don't think it is actually, because that is just a --

  Q. There is a green one with just a cross through it?
       A. I see, that is an antinuclear symbol. Antinuclear
power, is it not? I think it is any way.
