Day 009 - 08 Jul 94 - Page 51

     1 surprise you?
              A. Well, I have no way of answering that question.
2 I only know that within McDonald's we have a strict policy
              on that.
     3
         Q. You are not aware that -----
     4
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Unless you are suggesting that there is a
5 reason why he should be aware, I think -----

6 MR. MORRIS: I was going to make a point, but maybe I will
not. Presumably, you are aware that in Costa Rica
7 McDonald's within Costa Rica have used land that has been
formerly rainforest for their beef supplies?
8 A. I have no idea. I know in working with Ray Cesca, Ray
Cesca is involved in our international purchasing
9 department, and he is our person that would be able to
answer those types of questions and what the practices
    10 are.

11 Q. He has stated that in his statement.

12 MR. JUSTICE BELL: This witness, for better or worse, says he
              does not know.
    13
MR. MORRIS: So you were not fully briefed when you went to
14 Costa Rica on the situation?
              A. That was not the purpose of my trip. The purpose of
15 my trip was to learn about the programme and see if there
were ways that this type of programme can be initiated in
16 other parts of the world.

17 Q. You said it was to teach people good practices in managing
              forest or deforested areas?
18 A. Managing the land for agricultural purposes, correct.

19 Q. But, surely, you would have to have been briefed on the
fact that people might consider it colossal arrogance that
20 a US corporation would be coming over to teach people how
              to manage rainforests?
21 A. Well, first of all, we are working on a project with
partners for sustainable agriculture, and from what I saw
22 down there, the farmers that we are working with, they
loved the project. They love the opportunity to advance
23 their knowledge in technology to use less land and to be
              more productive with it.
    24
         Q. To go to the problems of installing dishwashers: You said
25 there were energy usage problems for installing
dishwashers in the stores, is that correct?
26 A. There is an energy impact.

27 Q. There are energy impacts that would cost McDonald's money?
              A. Energy costs money, yes.
    28
         Q. It would also take up a large amount of space if you had a
    29 dishwasher?
              A. Yes.
    30
         Q. And space.
