Day 021 - 29 Jul 94 - Page 66
1 A. I think some of them might naturally be only 9 stone
and a have; they might be a lot heavier.
2
Q. You say: "However, the fact that 27 per cent of
3 respondents are in the over-weight category suggests there
is a need for the staff to be provided with advice on
4 healthy eating. The data on alcohol, exercise and smoking
indicates there is a need for advice on these aspects as
5 well."
A. Yes.
6
Q. So far as you are aware, and do not guess, was any action
7 taken in consequence of that advice by you, do you know?
A. Yes, I know of at least one action which was the
8 introduction of a component dealing with the healthy
eating, healthy lifestyle into the training for people on
9 the management track
10 MR. RAMPTON: Thank you. My Lord, those are the questions
I have to ask in re-examination.
11
MS. STEEL: Can we just bring up something that comes out of
12 the paper that was read out?
13 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Do that and then if Mr. Rampton wants
to come back again he can.
14
Further Cross-examined by the Defendants
15
MS. STEEL: You just referred to this paper about the
16 nutritional implications of a meatless diet.
17 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Orange 3A, tab 12.
18 MS. STEEL: Yes. There re only two points I want to raise.
First, I do not know whether you remember the last time
19 when we were talking about the other study, we said that
the authors of the study had said that there was not any
20 -- the questionnaire was not satisfactory as a screening
tool. I said that we did not have any idea of what the
21 questions were that led to people saying they were
vegetarians or how that was decided they were. If we just
22 look at the very top of this new paper, the third line
down says: "Some who people call themselves vegetarians do
23 eat meat and fish occasionally." So, obviously we do have
to be very careful if we do not know what those questions
24 were in that other study, that we do not jump to any
conclusions about what people were in fact eating?
25 A. Oh, yes, I accept that. But again I think it is
important to understand that this latest paper by Sanders
26 and Reddy is a much more comprehensive one than the
individual study we were looking at last week. This is a
27 very thorough -----
28 MR. JUSTICE BELL: You mean the young women in -----
A. That is right. That was simply a report on an
29 individual study. This is a thorough evaluation. It is a
scientific review, and so is an evaluation of a large
30 number of studies which have been conducted in various
parts of the world.
