Day 018 - 26 Jul 94 - Page 68

1 Q. I just want to look at your conclusions. You say: "In
1987 a survey was conducted on the efficiency of stunning
2 methods in 27 beef abattoirs in England and Wales. Seven
of these abattoirs supply McKey Food Service Limited with
3 beef, and in this addendum their results are compared with
              those of the remaining plants.
     4
A higher proportion of the McKey Food Service Limited
5 suppliers used the Cow Puncher gun". So, that was true in
              1987, was it?
     6 A. Correct.

7 Q. "... than for the other abattoirs, and they experienced a
lower prevalence of imperfect stunning. The time taken to
8 load the stunning pen and aim the shot was lower in the
McKey Food Service Limited suppliers, and on average the
9 accuracy of shooting was better". Then do you divide the
figures up between the seven McKey suppliers in the
10 left-hand column, and the 20 others in the right-hand
              column?
    11 A. Yes.

12 Q. Underneath that, we see that five of the McKey people used
the Cow Puncher, one used a Cash Special. What sort of an
    13 instrument is that?
              A. It is shown in one diagram. It is a pistol grip gun,
14 a fairly light weight gun, for cattle, in fact, or an
              under-powered gun, should I say.
    15
         Q. So they ought to change it really?
    16 A. Yes.

17 Q. As I have understood your evidence?
              A. Yes, I would go along with that.
    18
         Q. It is on page 20 of the report, the 1987 report. It is
19 the left-hand gun in the picture. Somebody used, some
other supplier used Cox Mark 4. What sort of a weapon is
    20 that?
              A. Similar to the Cox Universal shown on page 20.
    21
         Q. Then underneath that the shooting questions are given.
22 The first one is the measure of the distance of the shot
from the ideal shooting position which, as I understand
23 and you have told us, should not be more than two
              centimetres; is that right?
    24 A. Correct.

25 Q. They scored by this shooting question 1.87, in those seven
McKey suppliers, whereas the other 20 scored an average of
26 two; is that a significant difference or not?
              A. I would have to do a statistical test to establish
27 whether it was -- just a minute, let me give a feel and
I will tell you whether it is likely to be significant or
28 not. It is likely to be significant.

    29 Q. It is?
              A. But I would have to do a proper test to establish
30 whether that was the case, but it is likely to be
significant based on the standard errors.
