     1 the pleading.

2 MR. RAMPTON: Even if this were or not in Dr. Millstone's
statement, it has nothing whatever to do with public
3 concern about how much or if you use any at all monosodium
glutamate, or whether Mr. Morris likes or dislikes
     4
MR. JUSTICE BELL: What page are you on?
     5
MR. RAMPTON: I am on page 14, 6.2.1, monosodium glutamate, of
     6 the abstracted pleadings.

7 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which chapter?

8 MR. RAMPTON: Tab 3, my Lord. I do not mind how long I sit
here. I am conscious your Lordship has judicial duties
9 somewhere in the distant future.

10 MR. JUSTICE BELL: What does your page 14 look like?

11 MR. RAMPTON: It has a number of E numbers on it. I am looking
at the top of the page.
    12
MR. JUSTICE BELL: My own abstract which I was reading from a
13 moment ago, which is a further edition of what we have
here referred to the E numbers.
    14
MR. RAMPTON: Each one has attributed to it specific
15 detrimental effects, allegedly. It is true that to some
extent that Dr. Millstone expands on those effects in his
16 witness statement. The supposedly hazardous effect of
each of these E numbers or additives is dealt with in
17 extenso in the statement of Professor Walker and in the
scientific paper upon which he relies.
    18
It cannot advance the case or your Lordship's decision of
19 the case or the efficient administration of justice, or
the use of Professor Wheelock's time, for Ms. Steel and
20 Mr. Morris to discuss with him public concerns about
whether or not there ought to be additives in food, or
21 whether or not Mr. Morris likes to have additives in his
food. One only needs to look at what is said about MSG on
22 page at 6.2.1 on page 14: "May cause heart palpitations
headaches, nausea, weakness of upper arms, pains in the
23 neck and symptoms similar to migraine, not permitted in
food for babies and young children".
    24
If Professor Wheelock is to be cross-examined on this
25 topic, those are the things that should be put to him. If
he says: "I do not know", then the answer is that
26 Professor Walker can deal with it next week or in
              September.
    27
MS. STEEL: When we were talking about concern, we were not
28 just talking about public concern. Mr. Morris was saying
-- we were being asked about what our case is. When
29 Mr. Morris said he did not like it, he was not saying: "I
do not like it, therefore, this cannot be used". He was
30 trying to draw a distinction between what our case is and
what our personal preferences are. Mr. Rampton is
