Day 003 - 30 Jun 94 - Page 11

     1
         Q. This is a question you may not be able to answer and, if
2 so, please say so. That applies to any question which
anybody asks you during the course of this case; if you do
3 not know, say so and if you can, tell us who will tell us
the answer. The next sentence says this: "... the truth
4 is it takes 800 squares of forest just to keep them", that
is McDonald's, "supplied with paper for one year". So far
5 as you are aware, is that true or false?
              A. I am sure it is false.
     6
         Q. There is a reference to "environment/index.html">litter" next. I am not going to
7 ask you about that. That is a topic to which I shall
              return later on.
     8 A. OK.

9 Q. Next heading: "Colonial Invasion. Not only are McDonald's
and many other corporations contributing to a major
10 ecological catastrophe, they are forcing the tribal
peoples in the rainforests off their ancestral
11 territories", and then there is some stuff about arrogance
and viciousness to which I need not draw your attention.
12 So far as the first bit of that is concerned, is that true
              or false?
    13 A. It is false.

14 Q. There are some words at the end of the column which again
I will not trouble you with about McDonald's wrecking the
    15 planet.

16 Then over to the other side of the page, Mr. Preston, we
find some material concerned with the nutritional or
17 health quality of McDonald's food. The question at the
top of the page beside the blob: "What's so unhealthy
18 about McDonald's food?" So far as you are concerned,
Mr. Preston, is McDonald's food unhealthy?
19 A. It is perfectly healthy -- I eat it all the time!

20 Q. Do you have a family, Mr. Preston?
              A. I do, two daughters and a wife.
    21
         Q. Do they eat it as well?
    22 A. They do.

23 Q. Do you encourage them to eat it?
              A. I take them on many occasions alongside me.
    24
         Q. Mr. Preston, you are an educated man -- yes?
    25 A. Well, I had some, yes.

26 Q. Do you make it any part of your business to consider the
health of yourself and your family?
    27 A. Most certainly.

28 Q. Do you know other people who take a similar concern for
their own health and the health of their families?
29 A. I think most of the world does.

30 Q. Do you know such people who eat McDonald's food?
              A. Many, many hundreds.
