Day 062 - 06 Dec 94 - Page 19

  Q. I was going to ask what you what the implications were, for
example, for a paper bag that is supposed to carry food in
       it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I think you have answered me; if the fibres are too short
the food will fall through it -- is that basically what
       happens?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The good quality, does that depend, if you
get paper which is created from recycled material of which
this is the first recycling, then it will be higher quality
than if it is of something which, part of which at least,
may have been recycled several times before?
       A. Yes. For instance, if you were to use newspaper,
newsprint, which already contains quite a high percentage
of recycled material, you would tend to find shorter fibres
in that. If you can use office waste which is printed
computer paper, for instance, that generally tends to be
       non-recycled. Then you can -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I understand. I had not appreciated the
       point. Yes?

MR. RAMPTON: Perhaps I should ask you this: One sees here a
whole list of different kinds of packaging, yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Are they all sourced -- this is for the United Kingdom --
within the UK or do they come from other countries?
       A. The carry-out bags are sourced in the UK.

  Q. That is Smith Anderson?
       A. That is Smith Anderson in Scotland. The folding
cartons are sourced partially -- so that is everywhere
where you see 72 per cent behind it -- they are sourced
partially in Spain, partially in Germany, but made all of
       the same raw material.

  Q. Which is what, is it that top colour?
       A. That is the top colour, yes, and the napkins are at
that time sourced partially -- at two suppliers, both
       located in the UK.

  Q. Both in the UK?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Could you go back to the statement you originally made for
these proceedings and turn, please, to your Exhibit CVE 2
which is a report headed: Perseco Europe Packaging
Material Use McDonald's in Europe 1992 which, you tell us,
in your statement you did which is a much more detailed
version of what you had done in the previous year; is that
       right?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Have you now taken to doing these each year, these reports?
       A. Yes, we have.
