Day 274 - 04 Jul 96 - Page 42
Q. So you had been up to the Nags Head McDonald's to hold a
picket with some people from Hackney and Islington animal
rights group; is that right?
A. Yes, if it says so here, yes.

Q. And you reported on that picket to the people at London
Greenpeace?
A. I would have just said three people turned up, or
however many people turned up, and we handed out leaflets,
yes.

Q. Can I suggest the reason you reported on that picket by
Hackney and Islington animal rights people to London
Greenpeace is that hostilities in McDonald's was a shared
interest of the two groups?
A. Well, you could suggest that but, I mean, I would
disagree. It is my political involvement that I am
reporting on, not everyone in the group is involved in
McDonald's campaign, as I have said before, and everyone
also reported on what they were particularly active in
outside London Greenpeace. It was a forum, it was a
network, it was a way of sharing what was going on in
London. I do not expect to get a gold star for it.

Q. Sorry. Over the page 201D, you remember this appears
before Mr. Gravett arrived. It says, "The next matter to
be discussed was McDonald's."

MS. STEEL: Do we know that this is before Mr. Gravett arrives
because there is no time on this one.

MR. RAMPTON: I deduced that from Mr. Bishop's report. "The
next matter to be discussed was McDonald's. Helen produce
a book on McDonald's by John F Love entitled 'Behind The
Arches'. It appeared to be about the financial rise of
McDonald's." Do you remember that?
A. I remember the book vaguely. I have never read the
book, but I have seen a copy of it in the office.

Q. Then it says, "It was agreed that picketing of McDonald's
would take place on 16th October 1990 between 4 p.m. and
6 p.m. Anti-McDonald's leaflets are to be distributed
outside the McDonald's headquarters in Finchley Road. A
further picket would be placed outside McDonald's Nags Head
branch between 12 noon and 2 p.m. on 16th October. It is
possible that another picket will be placed outside the
Oxford Street/Tottenham Court Road branch of McDonald's.
It should be noted that the Hackney and Islington animal
rights are picketing the Dorston junction McDonald's at
seven o'clock in the evening." Do you see all that?
A. Yes.

Q. That is right, is it not, that was agreed at that meeting?
A. I do not know if it was agreed at that meeting. Maybe
it was merely reported on. But, I mean, I would say that
the Nags Head branch was picketed by Hackney and Islington
animal rights campaign. If it was not specifically, it
would only be members of Hackney and Islington animal
rights campaign that went there. I was heavily involved in
that group and we regularly picketed that branch. People
