Day 249 - 14 May 96 - Page 53

       ARNI?
       A. Because by then I had already decided that I would
carry out an inquiry to determine who the authors,
publishers, distributors, of the pamphlet were. Well,
I had decided -- I had been given instructions to do that
       by Paul Preston.

  Q. You had a meeting with -- this is going back to this
meeting we were talking about -- this discussion with other
senior people at a media meeting; what was the outcome of
       that discussion?
       A. Keep it under observation.

  Q. Whose advice was that?
       A. That was decided between Starman and myself.

  Q. That was it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Keep an eye on it?
       A. At that time, yes.

  Q. Did Mr. Starman contact you again about how things were
going, whether there was any progress or any news?
       A. No, not until after we had served writs. I do not
think I saw Dick -- I might have seen him but we did not
       discuss this.

  Q. OK. The next action -- I think, perhaps, the best thing is
if you tell us the next thing that happened after this
meeting, this discussion with Dick Starman and other
       people?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you put it another way? Do you remember
anything of significance happening between the events you
have been telling us of and the October '88 protest?
       A. No, other than that the document itself was getting
even more widespread, not just the leaflet. That is the
whole point, not just the leaflet, but literature arising
from that leaflet containing the text or the cartoons of
that. It clearly was having an effect. It was getting a
       lot of support world wide.

MS. STEEL: That worried you, did it?
       A. It worried me because I remember, for instance, getting
a call from Australia and they were asking me whether
I intended to do anything about it. I also had a call from
a franchisee in New York who asked me whether I was going
to do anything about it. So that was concerning. But at
the time I had a lot of other work going on as well.

  Q. OK. If you could take us through what happened in relation
to the fayre, the London Greenpeace fayre?
       A. Right.

  Q. Hang on, because we have done -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not want him just to repeat. If there
are particular matters you want to check, please do. But
I do not really want Mr. Nicholson just to go through what
