Day 152 - 11 Jul 95 - Page 65

turn behind Lyn Mead's statement to a document with an E in
the corner, capital E. There should be a series of
computer print-out sheets which are, no doubt, green; it is
       a sideways on document.
       A. With pie charts on?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, it looks like that.

MR. RAMPTON: Beyond the pie charts. It is three, four pages
beyond the pie charts, three pages beyond the pie chart.
       A. It has male/female totals. Yes, I have it. It has an
       E in the top.

  Q. The first one is male/female totals; quite right, yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Turn over the page, please, to the second page of E and you
see something called "Current employees by average weekly
       hours per company", do you?
       A. Yes.

  Q. It is easiest if you put the file in front of you in the
witness box. I want you to glance at this only at the
first two columns of figures. The furthest left-hand
column gives periods of hours, average weekly hours,
nought, one to 10, 11 to 20; do you see that, and so on?
       A. Sure.

  Q. The first block of figures relates to the end of the first
       quarter of 1995?
       A. Right.

  Q. OK. I just want you to look at the figures. These are
national figures, I should tell you, for the whole of the
       Company's restaurants in the UK.
       A. Yes.

  Q. You will see there in that quarter 3,000 people or 10.82
per cent of the hourly -- these are hourly paid
workers -- 10.82 per cent of the workers did not do any
work at all during that quarter.
       A. OK.

  Q. Do you see that?
       A. I see that there, yes.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL:  It was for the week before the quarter day;
current employees by average weekly hours for the Company.
The reason I say that is I have some recollection but
I have written in next to the line, "As at quarter end date
31.3.95", I have written my own note "i.e. for the week
       before the quarter day".

MR. RAMPTON: Your Lordship has a better memory than I have.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is not a better memory. I am just saying
what I have written in. It may be right, it may be wrong,
but I thought I wrote it in when somebody gave evidence to
       that effect.
