Day 033 - 10 Oct 94 - Page 28
studies that I mentioned on immune function, those that
involved intravenous drips or simply high fat diets were
not studies that involved vegetarians; but the studies of
vegetarians are of particular interest because you are
greatly reducing saturated fat, typically reducing fat
overall.

MR. RAMPTON: Before Mr. Morris moves on, may I ask for some
assistance? This postulation that Dr. Barnard has been
making about -----

MS. STEEL: Could this be saved for cross-examination?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, he is entitled to make the point.

MR. RAMPTON: -- no, certainly not -- has been making about
immunity from cancer does not appear, as far as I can
tell, in his written reports for this case. I am
wondering this: Whether we may take it that the research
to which he referred is that which is referred to in
chapter 3, I think it is, of his book Food for Life.

MS. STEEL: Mr. Rampton is wrong; it is on page 8 of his
statement.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you identify it for us, Dr. Barnard?
A. Some of the studies that relate to diet and immunity
are, in fact, described in chapter 3 of Food for Life.
However, on page 8 of my statement in the penultimate
paragraph there is a reference to the work of Malter in
this regard -- there are many other such studies; that is
simply a representative one.

MR. RAMPTON: What I am wondering is this: As your Lordship
can see, Dr. Arnott is in court. He has not had the
chance to assess the materials which may or may not
underly what Dr. Barnard has said. If we can have an
indication what are the papers to which we should refer
Dr. Arnott's attention, that would be helpful.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you do that? It is worth asking now
because some preparation has to go on while you are giving
your evidence. If we leave it until you have finished and
Mr. Rampton starts cross-examination, it cuts the ability
to do that down.

THE WITNESS: Certainly. I would be pleased to have you look
at the studies that I have referred to in chapter 3, if
that is responsive to your question.

MS. STEEL: The paper that is referred to in the statement has
been served.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It does not matter. Mr. Rampton is merely
asking whether there is more than that, because then time
can be used to look at it. If he waits until he
cross-examines and finds out there is more than Malter, we
have to have a break while that is looked into. Yes,
Mr. Morris?
