Day 133 - 12 Jun 95 - Page 36

Q. Sort of A, B, C, D and may be E; A probably covers a whole
lot of ones in a very broad way and then the others
condescend more to particulars within different areas ---
A. Yes, that is right.

Q. Is that right? Is my recollection right?
A. Yes, that is right.

Q. It is two or three years since I have looked at one.

MR. RAMPTON: I am grateful to your Lordship for that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So when I look at the McDonald's rates they
are starting rates?
A. Yes.

MR. RAMPTON (To the witness): Are they the starting rates -- it
says "Basic Provincial, Outer London, Inner London" --
sorry, Ms. Mead, perhaps I should have brought this out.
I had assumed that is -- we can check it against the other
documents we have but it will save time if we do not have
to -- the basic starting rate for the day-time shift?
A. Yes, they will be. That is how -- I have not checked
either but that would be how we have quoted -----

MS. STEEL: It actually does not tally with the crew salary
history in volume XII, tab 29.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, leave that for a moment. All I was
trying to establish when I asked my question is whether you
have been able to take from the New Earnings Survey, from
some information in the New Earnings Survey, starting rates
in the various categories, or just what the averages are.
A. Just what the averages are, I believe. I cannot say
I am familiar with every aspect of the surveys, but
I believe it is hard to get starting rates.

Q. My recollection is that the surveys have the basic pay,
then they have an overtime column, then they have the gross
and then they take the next and so on?
A. Yes.

Q. There are about six columns on each page?
A. Yes, that is right. It is partly because you cannot
always get starting rates that we have then got things like
the Survey of Retail Wages which is attached because that
is a way of assessing that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We may come to that but at the moment I have
not got passed G1.

MR. RAMPTON: If we turn to G2, we do not know what the date is,
but do you think -- I may have asked this already -- it
might have been later than 1989?
A. Yes, certainly it is.

Q. There is, first of all, a Survey of Retail Wages generally,
that is on the second page of the document. Do you see
that?
