Day 306 - 26 Nov 96 - Page 28

MS. STEEL: Obviously, we have heard, as I have already
mentioned when I gave evidence and also when Mr. Gravett
gave evidence, that London Greenpeace did have a long
running practice of not taking fact sheets to
       demonstrations for distribution.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Well, I remember all that. I was just
checking that I had not forgotten that there was actually
evidence from you, or one of your witnesses, that there
were a lot of leaflets in or at a holdall by the wall but
if they were not the fact sheet they were either Veggies
       long leaflets or A5 leaflets.

MS. STEEL: Mr. Gravett did say -- I mean, he is shown in the
photographs bringing a bag to the picket -- that he brought
the leaflets to the picket and obviously they would have
been left in the bag that he brought them for people to
pick up and when they wanted to hand them out, and so on
the basis of that the evidence is that the leaflets in the
bags were the A5 version, bearing in mind that it was
Mr. Gravett who organised getting the leaflets there, and
the street theatre and generally the picket itself.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: There was the evidence of Jane Laporte. It is
pretty brief, so I will say on day 274, page 13, line 50,
she said that she attended the picket on 16th October 1989
and she did not see me handing out any leaflets.

Moving on then to Mr. Gravett. On day 272, page 3, line
49, he said that he attended the picket of the head office
on 16th October 1989 and that he did not think that any
fact sheets were taken or handed out on that day; he did
not recall me handing out any leaflets at all; that he went
to the London Greenpeace office and brought the leaflets
from there to the picket, plus he organised the street
theatre, and that the leaflets that he brought were A5
leaflets. He said, "I did not bring any fact sheets with
me because it was not the custom of the group at that time
to take McDonald's fact sheets on to demonstrations to hand
       out in bulk."

       I have got a reference on day 272, page 4, line 7. I am
not sure, I think that is the next bit I am about to read
out. That he said that the fact sheets had not been handed
out in bulk on demonstrations since 1987, that there were
only two occasions when it happened; one was in October
1986 and the other was in January 1987, and that it was
then decided that since it was costly to reprint it would
not be handed out in the street. That Mr. Gravett then
wrote a short leaflet for Hackney and Islington Animal
Rights, which was then adapted for use by London
Greenpeace, and he said that thereafter that was always
       used on street demonstrations.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Was that a reference to the A5?

MS. STEEL: Yes, that is the A5 leaflet.
