Q. Do you know Professor Verner Wheelock?
3 A. I do know him, yes.
4 Q. Does he help out with these leaflets?
A. He is heavily involved with every aspect of that.

Q. One of the categories of information given in those
6 leaflets is about additives?
A. Yes.

Q. The defendants' allegation, Mr. Preston, is that your use
8 of additives endangers human health in two senses that it
can cause adults disease and that it can cause children to
9 be hyperactive. I should add this, in one of their
leaflets they allege that additives cause 1300 cancer
10 cases in Britain in every year or in one year. Have you
heard of that?
11 A. I have heard it.
12 Q. Have youed heard any evidence to suppose it is true?
A. Absolutely none.

Q. How is your use of additives governed?
14 A. That is the very fact the E number exists. It is a
European Community process of gaining approval to use
15 whatever we use in the volumes it is used and it is
declared.

Q. As far as you know, well, let me put it this way, has it
17 ever come to your attention that a customer has come to
some part of your organisation and said: Look, my doctor
18 has told me that I have this condition or my child has
because of the additives in your food?
19 A. I have not had that. I tell you what I did have once
was a lady thanked me for the provision of those documents
20 because we she had a problem about gluten. She was
thankful we could provide information to her to make a
21 choice in what we ate. She was flower sensitive, gluten
sensitive.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Syrtis disease?
23 A. Yes.
24 MR. RAMPTON: So far as you are concerned, do you know of any
reasons not to use the additives that you do use in the
25 quantities that you use them?
A. I know of no reason that they should not be used. In
26 fact, they are quite necessary.
27 Q. I was going to ask you. Do you know of reasons why they
should be used?
28 A. They are necessary for reasons of preservation and
food safety.

Q. As well as for reasons of colour, taste and preservation?
30 A. Yes.
