Day 005 - 04 Jul 94 - Page 69
1
MR. MORRIS: I have a different page numbering system.
2
MR. JUSTICE BELL: What page number do you have?
3
MR. MORRIS: I have the original one which was disclosed to us.
4
MR. RAMPTON: Mr. Morris identifies the document, then we will
5 try to help to find the page.
6 MR. MORRIS: It is the statement of Jasper Maudesly.
7 MISS STEEL: It is page 1907.
8 MR. MORRIS: Yes. It has been renumbered completely which may
mean some documents have been taken out. I do not know,
9 I presume all documents that were disclosed originally
would be part of this. If you look at that page, it is
10 312 or 1907, if you look halfway, it says this chap is the
senior operations supervisor?
11 A. Yes.
12 Q. It says: "On the morning when the incident took place
I was in Middlesborough in their restaurant and I remember
13 telephoning our Newcastle branch and speaking to the store
manageress Miss Patima Heron. My usual conversation would
14 be to ask for the previous day's sales and what was her
increased percentage over the previous year, because that
15 is the way the sales are taken over the comparative period
year." Some of it is badly worded. It says here: "This
16 is for all our restaurants?
A. Yes.
17
Q. Does that mean that every restaurant is under pressure to
18 increase sales?
A. No. It merely says if I want to know how how has a
19 restaurant done today versus the same day a year ago,
I call the restaurant and ask. It is merely a statement.
20 What does it say? My usual conversation would be to ask
her of the previous day's sales and what was her increase
21 over the previous year. I assume he wanted to know was
there growth or lack thereof.
22
Q. Further down the page it says: "I would tell over of the
23 other restaurants percentages. This is not done to put
her under any pressure. It is done to create healthy
24 competition between the restaurants in our area. Really,
it is hoped that the manageress will then be able to
25 answer why her percentages were down. We would discuss
what to do about it."
26
At the bottom it says this: "This would be in co-operation
27 with all our store managers, not just Mrs. Heron to create
healthy competition between the restaurants."
28 Over the page: "As far as I am aware the Northumberland
Street restaurant in Newcastle was not under any
29 pressure. The figures provided for this week were quite
satisfactory and certainly Mrs. Heron was not under any
30 pressure from me about her position as store
manageress."
