Day 204 - 15 Jan 96 - Page 25

I will make this suggestion, first of all, that if
Mr. Davis finishes with time to spare tomorrow, as I would
have thought he would, if we avoid going over evidence
which he has already given again, Mr. Morris (and
Ms. Steel, if she wishes) should say what he wishes to say
about Mr. Stein and Civil Evidence Act Notices as to what
Mr. Stein said to the Congressional Committee. I think
that may involve (7) as well on his list, notice to admit
with regard to US Child Labour and Hygiene violations. Any
question of interrogatories which relate to that, provided
you, Mr. Rampton, have had time to apply your mind to it,
and the question of interrogatories in relation to beef
       sources.

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So I suggest we keep away from those, but be
ready to have some argument on those tomorrow, when
Mr. Davis' evidence is finished if, indeed, it has not
       finished this afternoon.

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: But are there any of the other matters,
Mr. Morris, which we can deal with quite shortly this
       morning?

MR. MORRIS: Yes, I am sort of not really prepared but -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you are not prepared, say so, and we will
put them over. I am just giving you the opportunity to
raise them now while we have three-quarters of an hour.

MR. MORRIS: Yes. The first one is, obviously, fairly simple,
       is that -----

MR. RAMPTON: No, my Lord, I am afraid it is not very simple.
There is quite a lot of work in the first one, in fact,
because that is, as usual, is a selected reference and
there is a whole lot else to be looked at beside. I do not
encourage Mr. Morris to embark on that one. It involves
       looking at transcripts.

MR. MORRIS: I am just seeing if there is anything we can deal
       with.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If there is not or you are not prepared, just
say so and we will adjourn until 2 o'clock.

MR. MORRIS: It is probably better to adjourn.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: 2 o'clock.

                       (Luncheon adjournment)

MR. RAMPTON: Mr. Davis is here. Could you go in the witness
       box, please?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: While Mr. Davis is coming to the witness box,
point 1 on Mr. Morris' list of topics, if there are a
