Day 195 - 04 Dec 95 - Page 41

       A. Yes.

  Q. Did you not?
       A. Yes, that is right.

  Q. You did it voluntarily, did you not?
       A. On the close, yes.

  Q. You did it because it was a better rate of pay than the
       daily rate?
       A. I did not specifically ask to do evening close shifts,
no, if that is what you mean, but I was put on close
shifts, on night shifts, and I did not particularly object
       to that, no.

  Q. No. It was better pay, was it not?
       A. It was slightly better pay, you may say, yes.

  Q. You remained at McDonald's from 7th October 1985 until the
       end of August 1987?
       A. That is right.

  Q. Which is nearly two years?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Bar one month, I think. What is it that kept you at
McDonald's if it was such a terrible place?
       A. Part of my time at McDonald's, I was actually a
student, a part-time student, myself at Middlesex
Polytechnic, as it was then called. So, I was studying,
I was a student, and I was working at McDonald's, and so it
was -- I was trying to finish my course and have some money
as well, earn some money as well, and part of the reason
I did, I stayed for so long, was that there were not many
       job opportunities around the area.

  Q. Where was the Middlesex Polytechnic?
       A. The part I was going to was Enfield.

  Q. This is a simple request for information: How far is
       Enfield from Colchester?
       A. I would not know.

  Q. So you would leave your college during the day and then go
and work at McDonald's in the evening?
       A. No, I was in the second year of my course and that
I only required to see my Supervisor every now and then, so
I was not actually attending the course every day.

  Q. So you were studying at home during the day a lot of the
       time?
       A. Yes, a lot of the time -- not necessarily during the
day, whenever I got the opportunity.

  Q. Instead of doing night closes, you could have worked at
McDonald's during the day and then studied in the evening
with your wife sitting by your side, could you not?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I want you to follow through this statement with me -- I am
