Day 158 - 19 Jul 95 - Page 29
until 2 o'clock and that you look in Mr. Shane's book and
see if in some earlier parts than the ones you have
referred to whether he gives you any indication of whether
he is using tropical forest to mean rain forest, because if
you look somewhere near the beginning of the book, for all
I know, he will explain what he means by "rain forest" and
explain what he means by "tropical forest".

If he starts off by saying, "Rain forest, otherwise known
as tropical forest", there we are. If it appears that they
have a differing definition, you ought to tell me about it.

MR. MORRIS: Can I say that the Collins' map says that the main
body of the identified forest in the Amazon Basin is
defined as "tropical rain forest"; it is only the tiny bit
at the very bottom that I defined as "vegetation other than
rain forest dominant". So the implication of that map is
that tropical rain forest certainly covers at least half of
Mato Grosso and then there has been deforestation. It is
clear that a lot of tropical rain forest has been
deforested, and that must be what it is referring to when
it talks about -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why do you not accept my invitation to try to
look further for it and also see if you can find out when
the first McDonald's restaurant appeared in Brazil.

MS. STEEL: I was just going to say, I have actually found
that. It is in Defendants' bundle of documents, bundle VI,
of the original list, document No. 197, which is a
McDonald's fact, well, it says "Interesting facts about
McDonald's". It says on the first page: "1970 Costa Rica
was opened" and then "1979, new countries, Brazil".

MR. RAMPTON: 1979?

MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will resume at 2 o'clock.

(Luncheon adjournment)

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: I do not know if you have the Hoofprints on the
Forest document in front of you, the whole document?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If I have it somewhere, you tell me about it.

MS. STEEL: It is in the trial bundles; it is document number 8
on our original list of documents.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: I think it would be helpful if you could find a
copy of the London Greenpeace factsheet as well.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. In fact, if we look at that first, on
the third page of the London Greenpeace factsheet, under
the box, under "Why it is wrong for McDonald's to destroy
