Day 188 - 15 Nov 95 - Page 13
A. Of my notes, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a moment. (Pause) Yes.

MR. MORRIS: Were there any other respects you felt the film may
not have been an accurate portrayal?
A. I think there were odd little things which -- I mean,
there was a lot of extra cleaning that was done for no
particular reason. I mean, I think actually the stores
were very clean places on the whole, but there was extra
cleaning that was done. For example, when we were going to
film the clocking-on sequence, somebody was dispatched to
clean the wall behind the clock and to stack the cards
neatly. So it was that kind of -- instances like that all
the time, to ensure that the normal hurly-burly of the
store was presented in the most clean and proper way and
everything looked in its place. So there was a constant
attention to detail like that all the time.

Q. Would you just walk around with a camera, with McDonald's
not knowing where you were going to go, or would it be set
up?
A. It is partly the process of filming. Obviously, if you
are going to do something like clocking on, you actually
cannot just stand and run a film and wait until someone
comes along and puts the card in the clock; you actually
have to organise it in advance, so you would have to say,
"We want to film someone clocking on"; and, I mean, then
we would know the next shift was about to start, so that
they would know that we were going to do that. But,
similarly, if you were going to -- say that you were going
to film the Big Mac area, then, clearly, a television
camera going into an area like that, you know, you cannot
walk in with a camera and plonk it down and start filming.
So there would have to be, in advance, agreement about what
we were going to film and how long we were going to do it,
and where the camera was going to go. So McDonald's always
knew in advance where we were filming. We could not just
wander around.

Q. Did they take any steps when they knew you were going to go
into a particular area?
A. That was the kind of thing that would happen, that if
we said we were going to start filming in the Big Mac
section or the clocking-on section, or something; so that
when we were going to film the crew room, somebody was sent
up to clean the crew room, to make sure it was spotless.
There was all that pre-preparation that went on.

But, I mean, I think the point I would like to make is that
we were not stopped physically from filming by McDonald's,
but the nature of it was that they always knew where we
were going to be in advance. We were stopped physically
from filming when we were interviewing people. On one
instance, when I think a number of managers were all really
hassling a particular crew member and we put the camera on
that -- we swung the camera round from the till area,
I think, on to that -- Corinne realised that that was what
we were doing and instantly stopped us filming.
