Day 032 - 06 Oct 94 - Page 27
A. They might indeed mix it; almost the majority just
going for that reason alone, that they can pick up a meal
very quickly without having to wait. Overleaf you can see
these ratios did not appear to change much between lunch
time and the afternoon sample.

MS. STEEL: I do not know how much of the next couple of pages
you think are important.
A. Well, the complicated table on page 18 bears, I think,
a moment's examination: The essence of it is how often
were respondents saying that they used various types of
food, that they ate those types of fastfood and take-away
food, of which, if they are eating them very frequently,
once a day, it tends to be a hamburger. That is the most
common; indeed, hamburger dominates for two or three times
a week as well. But if they are eating less often, then
it may well be other foods. The same applies with snacks,
but hamburgers tend to be the most popular amongst those
that are eating frequently. It is pointed out in the
footnote that certain types of outlets were not available
locally, so the judgment has to be put in that
perspective.

MS. STEEL: So is that right, that almost 7 per cent of
people -----

MR. MORRIS: - were eating hamburgers every day?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What are you ----

MR. MORRIS: Top left-hand corner of the chart: Once a day
for a meal. Is that what that says, that 7 per cent of
those interviewed were eating hamburgers every day?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is what it appears to say, is it not?
A. It does appear to say that. I am just reluctant to
commit myself to it because I am not sure. No, I would
actually withdraw that. I think it may well be that of
those who ate hamburgers, in which case my previous
conclusion would be wrong, that is to say, the hundred at
the bottom.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, they all have hundreds at the bottom, so
that last answer must be right.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Tell me what you think it means, bearing in
mind that also there is 2.5 on once a day for a snack, so
one wonders whether -----
A. They should be added in. Of those who ate hamburgers,
12.7 per cent never ate a hamburger. There was, if you
like, a clustering in the once, two and three, and once a
week as a meal and, similarly, two or three a week as a
snack; whereas those who ate -----

Q. Can you tell me what the definition of a snack is? It is
not purely in the mind of -----
A. It was.

Q. Was it purely in the mind of the person being questioned?
A. Yes.
