Day 062 - 06 Dec 94 - Page 23

MR. RAMPTON: There are two pages which should be looked at
together at the same time if it is to make sense, 7.3 and
CVE 2 and the single page which is CVE 3.

  MR. MORRIS: I see, yes.

MR. RAMPTON: If you add the transport package into your figure
of 29.7 million kilograms on 7.3, you get a total figure of
just over 32 million kilograms in packaging?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Of which the recycled content is roughly about 46 per cent?
       A. Yes.

MS. STEEL: Can I just say, it is not a particularly important
point, but the figures on 7.3, I made them a little bit
more than what Mr. Rampton said. I do not think it is
particularly important but just for the sake of -----

MR. RAMPTON: I probably did not add wood. I probably just did
the paper. That may be the reason.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will make a note, "may not be exactly
       right".

MR. RAMPTON: No, my arithmetic is not always brilliant,
I readily confess. Mr. Van Erp, I would like to ask you
this: So far as Perseco is concerned, have you reached, do
you think, saturation in relation to recycled content or do
you think that you can increase the content?
       A. I do not think we have reached saturation in recycled
content. The technical progress within paper makers will
push the recycled content of transportation packaging still
higher. That will, however, be marginal. In the other
areas we will find that there will probably come more and
more control over the source of recycled fibre which in
time will enable products which are not yet made of
recycled fibre so that they can actually be made of
       recycled fibre.

  Q. Leaving aside public perception, Mr. Van Erp (which, as we
know, can often be misconceived), what are the arguments,
so far as Perseco or McDonald's, if you like, in favour of
continuing to increase the proportion of recycled fibre in
       your products?
       A. What are the arguments for?

  Q. What are the arguments in favour of continuing to increase
       the amount of recycled fibre?
       A. There is expected to be an economic advantage.

  Q. An economic advantage -- is it cheaper?
       A. It should be cheaper, yes.

  Q. You mean it is ----
       A. Especially with the paper prices, the virgin paper
prices, at the moment rising. Secondly, you preserve, you
are starting to close the loop of your own paper that you
use in reusing it again and that is a concept which
McDonald's wants to follow, so .....
