Day 022 - 12 Sep 94 - Page 61
article in Nature, do you?
A. Not here.

Q. No, but do you have it somewhere?

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, in one of Professor Wheelock's
statements he actually quotes from the Willett article
which makes reference to what appears to be that paper.
So, at any rate, the first publication of that paper must
have preceded 8th June 1983 which is when Professor
Wheelock's statement was prepared. What I cannot find at
the moment is the Willett study which makes mention of
that Chinese study.
A. It was published in Nature.

MR. RAMPTON: There is one in 1989. I can give the reference
to that because it is in Willett's 1990 paper, in the New
England Journal of Medicine. It is reference 50.

THE WITNESS: In fact, the actual fat intake that Professor
Willett quotes in article in Nature is different to the
fat range which is quoted in this particular letter from
Professor Campbell or Dr. Campbell.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Could I just have a look at it? (Handed).

THE WITNESS: So either the estimation of the fat has changed
through time or an error has crept in.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You had better have it back. (Handed).

MR. MORRIS: We will try to get a better copy. I have made
this point before.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Ask your question again.

MR. MORRIS: Having seen that, if it is true, what I said from
his letter, that would be an advantage of a population
study over a cohort study?
A. Well, I would still argue that, in fact, all that does
is point you in a direction and you would need to -- you
know, I would like to know what the methodology was that
looked at that particular study. In fact, in this letter
you have given me from Dr. Campbell he states that, of
course, the higher breast cancer rates are not due solely
to dietary fat but to a broad constillation, I presume he
means, of dietary factors associated with these levels of
dietary fats. So, he is actually indicating that it is
not just a straightforward association; it is a complex
relationship.

Q. But he is saying that diet and specifically dietary fat
play a part, an essential part?
A. He obviously believes that, yes.

Q. I do not know if there is much more value to be gained
from going through a number of studies really. There was
one interesting study which was your reference No. 2 which
actually is a summary of studies.
