Day 245 - 07 May 96 - Page 47

       A. Ms. Steel, I am not aware of anything about those
private investigators beyond giving the instruction to Sid
Nicholson to retain someone to act on a legal and
forthright basis in this case. I do not know anything
beyond that. I have never met them, seen them or
       otherwise.

  Q. You did not specifically instruct them not to hand out any
London Greenpeace leaflets about McDonald's whatever the
       circumstances?
       A. Ms. Steel, I have never met them.

  Q. I am talking about when you gave your instructions to Mr.
Nicholson to hire them, you did not specifically instruct
him that he must tell them that they are not to hand out
       any anti-McDonald's leaflet?
       A. I gave one instruction, one instruction alone: Make
whatever you do correct, proper and legal. It was the
total extent of my conversation with Sid about the issue.
There was nothing else. There never has been anything
       else.

  Q. When was that discussion with Mr. Nicholson?
       A. Nineteen ninety, I do not know exactly.

  Q. How long?
       A. Before the writs were served. That I know for sure.

  Q. How long before you were aware that the private
investigators had started to attending meetings was it that
you discussed this with Mr. Nicholson?
       A. Well, I was never aware of who was attending what, when
in any way, shape or form. As I said, I have never
discussed the issue since giving the instruction.

  Q. Do you remember how long it was before the writs were
served that you had this discussion with Mr. Nicholson?
       A. No, I do not.

  Q. 2 years, 1 year, 3 years?
       A. I do not remember.

  Q. Did you give any instructions about when Mr. Nicholson
       should stop using private investigators?
       A. That was left to his discretion.

  Q. Were you told when they should stop using private
       investigators, when they had, sorry?
       A. Was I told when they had?

  Q. Yes?
       A. I think I was, but, again, I am not 110 per cent sure
       on that one.

  Q. You were aware that the Company was still sending private
investigators to meetings of London Greenpeace after the
       writs had been served?
       A. No, I was not.

  Q. Were you aware that private investigators had attended
