Day 006 - 05 Jul 94 - Page 31
1 A. There are some limits on what they can have but,
basically, yes.
2
Q. Is it a sackable offence when a staff member takes an
3 additional amount of food?
A. It can be.
4
Q. That would come under your dishonesty?
5 A. Yes. I would be a little liberal on it. The time I
get personally most concerned is when they are found to be
6 taking it for giving to other people who have not paid for
it.
7
Q. If they took it just for themselves, then?
8 A. I am personally reasonably liberal on it, but I think
I would look at the circumstances at hand and judge
9 accordingly.
10 Q. Would you not have any guidelines for managers on that?
A. There are some guidelines on employee consumption,
11 yes. I am not familiar with exactly what they are, but
there are certainly guidelines which have been published.
12
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Are employees allowed to take food away or
13 must they eat them on the premises?
A. It is supposed to be on the premises.
14
MR. MORRIS: Are they allowed to bring other food on to the
15 premises to consume in their lunch break or tea breaks?
A. It is discouraged, but I do not know it is prohibited.
16 There are some things we are not allowed to have on the
premises, alcohol, for example. I have known people,
17 especially individuals who work at night in the cleaning,
sterilisation process, to bring their own food in if the
18 kitchens are not open and operating.
19 Q. When the kitchens are open and operating, would it be?
A. It would be normal to provide that which is there.
20
Q. Yes. But would you say staff would be discouraged, would
21 it be a sackable offence to bring in other food or just
you get a warning on it or what?
22 A. Really I do not -- I do not know. I would not get
uptight about it myself but .....
23
MISS STEEL: You said that you felt that the fact sheet you are
24 suing over would damage your image, Mr. Preston. How
important is brand awareness to how important is your
25 image and name? Is it particularly important?
A. It is very important; obviously you think it is too or
26 you would not have taken the corporate logo to catch
people's attention and writing things like "McMurder" or
27 "McHunger" or "McDisease" right through the middle of it.
It is a recognisable symbol.
28
Q. Right. So brand awareness is important?
29 A. Absolutely.
30 Q. Whenever people hear the words "McDonald's", you want them
to think of a pleasurable experience eating at McDonald's?
