Day 010 - 11 Jul 94 - Page 79
1 research related to whether or not there were emissions
from polystyrene foam, and whether or not those emissions
2 included chemicals other than the ones that McDonald's
asserted and, in addition, whether or not those were
3 potentially dangerous.
4 Q. Can you go, please, to the last page before the
references; it must be 128?
5 A. OK.
6 Q. One sees the conclusions set out in a set of seven
numbered subparagraphs. I want you to look at the last
7 one. "When compared with other common natural and
synthetic building materials, the thermal decomposition
8 products of polystyrene appear to be among the least
toxic."
9
We have the least toxic already. This is a report about
10 the behaviour of materials commonly used in the
construction industry, is it not?
11 A. That would be correct, yes.
12 Q. What?
A. Yes.
13
Q. That is correct?
14 A. The essential concern is with regard to fire fighters.
15 Q. That is what this magazine is all about, fire and
materials? It is for specialists in that field. It has
16 not got any specific application to the materials which
McDonald's uses for its food packaging, does it?
17 A. I think it is specific in the sense that it deals with
polystyrene combustion.
18
Q. Why did you not put into your statement for the benefit of
19 this court that that is the kind polystyrene, that is the
kind of material, with which this report was concerned,
20 building materials?
A. I did not think that it was material at the time that
21 I wrote my statement.
22 MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, the last is landfills, so shall I finish
or shall I go on?
23
MR. JUSTICE BELL: How long do you think you will be because I
24 think we break off It is -----
25 MR. RAMPTON: I have just to deal with a few figures really,
but that is a tiring exercise. Perhaps it is late for
26 everybody.
27 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. I think we will break off until the
morning.
28
MR. RAMPTON: Would your Lordship consider -- I nearly lost
29 Professor Duxbury; he went back to Strathclyde in such a
fury -- either deferring Mr. Lipsett until after Professor
30 Duxbury. It may be he will find something useful in
Professor Duxbury's evidence, I do not know, or else
