Day 096 - 03 Mar 95 - Page 37

       A. There is the odd heart problem, obviously, just the
same again as in human beings, you know, unpredictable.

  Q. How long on average do the pigs spend in transport?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We have had this before.
       A. Yes, I believe I answered that before, did I not?

MR. MORRIS: I have a vague recollection.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is there a particular question? You said
less than two hours and an average would be two hours and
then you allowed for some longer journeys, I believe.
       A. That is correct.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, the maximum was six.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Maximum six?
       A. That is correct.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Was there anything you wanted to challenge on
       that?

MS. STEEL: I think Mr. Morris wants to ask something.

MR. MORRIS: By my calculations, something like 20 times as many
pigs die in transport for the time-scale of two hours
compared to die in the finishing sheds over the 11 weeks,
or whatever, in the finishing sheds. We can work out the
       calculations.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Would that surprise you at all?

MR. MORRIS: Does that surprise you if that turns out to be
true, that 20 times as many pigs for the time-scale die in
       transport?
       A. Yes, the time-scale?

  Q. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 20 times as many pigs die in a two hour
journey as they would in two hours in a finishing unit?
       A. No, that cannot be right, can it?

  Q. Sorry?
       A. That cannot be right, can it?

  Q. It would not surprise me one bit, I have to say,
       because -----
       A. You are saying 20 times?

  Q. The death rate for pigs spending two hours on the back of a
lorry is 20 times as great as for a pig standing around in
a finishing unit for two hours.
       A. Yes.

  Q. Would that surprise you?
       A. No, no, I am with you.

MR. MORRIS: So, basically the stress and the confinement and
