Day 019 - 27 Jul 94 - Page 39

1 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, Dr. Gregory?

2 MS. STEEL (To the witness): Just a couple of things: The leg
weakness pathology charts that you have given us, have you
     3 got them there?
              A. Yes.
     4
         Q. I do not know what order your ones are in. I have put
5 mine in the order of the wing numbers at the top.
              A. Starting with 547?
     6
         Q. No, starting with 510.
7 A. I am in reverse sequence -- keep going.

8 Q. You are in reverse sequence?
              A. Yes, I am happy.
     9
         Q. If you can find the one with 510 at the top?
    10 A. I have it.

11 Q. At the bottom in the "Comments" section there is something
              written there?
    12 A. Yes.

13 Q. Could you just explain what that is?
              A. Yes. First of all, I should point out that I did not
14 do the pathology examinations on these birds. This one
was done by one of my colleagues, Stephen Kestin. So I am
15 going to have to interpret what I understand from reading
              these data sheets.
    16
         Q. Right.
17 A. What it says is: "Right femur, complete femoral head
detached", it means complete femoral head detachment.
    18
         Q. What does that mean in practical terms?
19 A. These birds were slaughtered by or -- hold on, they
were injected with an overdose of an anesthetic in order
20 to kill them, so they had not died in the shed. This
particular bird either due to an antimortem or lesion or
21 postmortem handling had detachment at the hip. The
information is incomplete as to decide which that was. I
22 do not know. If it was associated with a haemorrhage,
then it would have been antimortem; if there was no
23 haemorrhage it would have been postmortem.

24 Q. So you cannot tell from this whether this was after -----
              A. No, but I could find out if you want me to.
    25
         Q. It might be helpful if you could find out?
26 A. Right. I will do my best.

27 Q. If this was antimortem, before the death, what gait score
would that cause the bird to have?
28 A. Can I give a bit of interpretation because we do not
know what situation we have at hand. If it was
29 antimortem, it is likely that it occurred during the
handling procedures for the bird, so it would have been
30 inflicted by us or the people who caught the birds on our
              behalf. That is likely.
