Day 032 - 06 Oct 94 - Page 25
film starts, it is much more scattered?
A. I agree with you. It is quite possible that this does
not represent the full breadth of those using those
stores, and in a way we probably could not do such a
survey, certainly not with the facilities we had at the
time. It was only our interest to ask whether if there
was anybody who was using fastfoods at a high rate,
consuming fastfoods at a high rate, even one example. As
it was, we found a fair number of people who were using
fastfoods at quite high levels of intake, and that to us
was sufficient justification for this survey for
publishing it. It was not the intention to try to do a
random selection. It was the intention to see if there
were cases.

MS. STEEL: If we then maybe turn to page 13. Under Eating
Habits it has the figures I have already read out. The
chart underneath shows, is it right, the number of people
coming out of those particular stores saying how
frequently they ate at fastfood outlets?
A. Generally, yes, it does; not that 36 per cent would
eat a Kentucky meal, but that 36 per cent of those coming
out of Kentucky would eat a fastfood meal of any sort once
a day.

Q. So 32 per cent of McDonald's customers who were surveyed
said they ate fastfoods once a day?
A. That is correct.

Q. A further 49 per cent said they ate fastfoods between one
and five times a week; is that right?
A. Yes, less than once but more than five times a week --
sorry, more than once but less than five times a week.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What does it mean in the second column?
A. Yes, the symbols are rather crudely drawn.

Q. Does it mean more than once and up to five times a week?
A. Yes, it does.

MS. STEEL: It looks as though the bracket should not be
there?
A. The bracket should be an arrow shape facing the other
way, I think, to make it a "less than" sign. It is
greater than one and less than five.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: A "less than" sign, yes.

MS. STEEL: Then the average number of eating occasions per
week, could you explain those figures?
A. Yes, this will give you just the average which is more
like that of a population average and hence led us to
think this spread within that population was really very
significant. Of those coming out of, say, Kentucky Fried
Chicken, on average they would say they were eating
fastfoods about 4.8 times a week, of which meals comprised
the 3.16 and snacks 1.64.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I notice if you take the second and fourth
columns together you get 60 per cent. So, if you have
