Day 269 - 25 Jun 96 - Page 71

Q. What he is suggesting is that you say death from heart
disease rose strikingly from 1950 to the late 1980's?
A. Yes.

Q. And he would go all along with that if you substituted late
70's?
A. I would correct that. I am happy to correct that.

MR. RAMPTON: I am grateful. It is a significant drop, is it
not, from roundabout 140 per hundred thousand if you take
the English, who always seem to be better off, actually to
add 125 in 1990?
A. You have to remember that this is somewhat cheat this
graph, because it starts at 80 and goes up to 150. It does
not start from 0 and go up, so it looks rather more
dramatic than that it is when you look at the long
historical trend.

Q. I understand all that, Professor Crawford, but what you
have to know is McDonald's did not get to this country
until 1974?
A. Yes.

Q. Frankly, before that it is very interesting but it is not
relevant--

MR. MORRIS: Is that statement a fact or a question?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is Mr. Rampton's trailing his coat for
the future.

MR. MORRIS: Well, I disagree with it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I dare say you will.

MR. RAMPTON: I expect I will make another speech about it later
on but it is a fairly -- what shall I say -- a fairly
significant drop, is it not?
A. Yes.

Q. And a good one?
A. Well, as I said if you look at the British Heart
Foundation's data, or if you look at the data where you get
it going from zero and it compares with other countries it
looks slightly less dramatic than if you take a little bit
of the top of the graph and expose it there, but I have to
say nonetheless we are all thoroughly pleased with this.

Q. Now, there are only two other things?
A. That is not to say it could not have been better.

Q. There are only two other things I need to ask you about,
Professor, no doubt to your relief and certainly to mine so
you will not have to come back tomorrow unless something
untoward happens. I want to ask you about your -- I call
it without any disrespect to the court -- a bathtub theory,
a bath metastasis. You do not mind if I call it that?
A. I do not mind with what you call it, Mr. Rampton.
