Day 035 - 12 Oct 94 - Page 66
A. I had planned to leave Friday. I do not know if I can
be finished up tomorrow?

Q. Yes.
A. It would be much appreciated if I could.

Q. You probably have not had time to read all the materials
that I suggested you should read because there is quite a
lot. Have you had the opportunity of reading all
Dr. Arnott's references?
A. I have read most of them.

Q. You have?
A. Yes.

Q. That will save time.
A. I would be certainly glad to go over them again.

Q. You should remind yourself of some of your own studies,
the ones you have referred to, if you need to do so.
A. Thank you.

Q. I shall invite you to look at some of those and, if you
would not mind, remind yourself of the contents of the two
statements that you have made for the purpose of this
case. One last document, please, in 1989. My Lord, this
is in the Defendants' bundles from their list of
documents, file II of the first list, document 58.
Kingfisher blue. If you could turn to No. 58 which is
near the back, please. This is (or should be) a document
entitled: "Can you avoid cancer? A guide to reducing
your risks". A revised issue, published in 1989, coming
from the EEC as part of the UK response to the Europe
Against Cancer Initiative.

Dr. Barnard, making allowances for the fact that this is a
British document and, therefore, your knowledge of health
policy in this country may be limited, do you agree?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I just ask about that? Are you aware of
any of the UK government publications or committee
publications or how views in this country may vary from
those in the US, or would you really only consider
yourself to be aware of how things stand in the States?
A. My awareness of government policies in Britain is
considerably more superficial than in the United States.

MR. RAMPTON: Making allowance for that, can I ask you this
general question? In this discussion which you have been
having in this court, Dr. Barnard, would you agree that
what matters is not the resolution of an arid, academic
discussion, but the health of the populations of the
countries in the world at large?
A. Well, I guess when I became a doctor the health of
human beings was my interest and motivation and reason for
doing what I have done.

Q. Yes, that I think is an answer "yes" to my question, is it
not?
A. It is.
