much of it went to credit, they did not identify which
bits of it went to some other aspect.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What I suggest you do is see what is put by
Mr. Rampton and whether it goes to credit or just an
introduction to another line of cross-examination. Yes,
       Mr. Rampton?

MR. RAMPTON: Dr. Barnard, before I ask you to look at a few
passages in this book which you have written, may I ask
you this: Am I right in thinking that your stance or the
advice conveyed by this book is not supported by the
       American Medical Association, right?
       A. You are asking me if the American?

  Q. I am asking you whether the American Medical Association
supports the position you have taken in this book on
       nutrition?
       A. As I mentioned earlier, they are publishing an article
by my, but they have taken no stance, to my knowledge, on
that book. The names that you will see in endorsing on
the back Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. Henry Heimlich, Benjamin
Spock and Colin Campbell, to my knowledge, none of them
are speaking on behalf of the American Medical
       Association.

  Q. The American Heart Association has not supported the no
meat, no dairy products, no chicken, no fish, little
vegetable oil position that you have taken in this book,
       has it?
       A. They have taken a very substantial interest in that
but, to my knowledge, the American Heart Association has
made no comment on my book.

  Q. The American Dieticians Association, is it?
       A. It is dietetic.

  Q. Dietetic Association has not supported the position you
       have taken in this book?
       A. Like the American Heart Association, the American
Dietetic Association has taken a very substantial interest
in the subject matter of the book, they are including
vegetarian guidelines as well but, to my knowledge, they
have taken no stance whatsoever on my book in particular.

  Q. At present, at least, though you may convert the whole
world, Dr. Barnard, for all I know, at present at least
the position in America is this, is it not, that what
I might call the mainstream professional bodies and the
government, adhere to the 30 per cent total, 10 per cent
saturated fat, proportions of total energy intake which
are presently the recommended guidelines, do they not?
       A. Many medical organisations or health related
organisations do advocate a 30 per cent fat limit,
10 per cent of which is to come from saturated fat. That
       is something they have done.

  Q. That would include, for example, I do not know who is the
American supremo on health, but it might include the
       Surgeon General, might it not?
