Day 128 - 24 May 95 - Page 22

MS. STEEL: Mrs. Barnes, what were you just discussing with
       Mrs. Brinley-Codd?
       A. What I wanted for lunch.

  Q. What was on the piece of paper that she showed you?
       A. The menu: Parma ham and melon today.

  Q. In the Crew Handbook, health and safety comes last, does it
       not?
       A. It is one of the latest sections, yes.

  Q. It is right at the back, is it not?
       A. Pretty well near the back, yes.

  Q. Do you not think you ought to have it at the front of the
handbook to indicate to crew how important health and
       safety is?
       A. I suppose it is one of the things we could consider.

  Q. And to hope they are more likely to read it if they start
reading the book from the front, as most people do?
       A. I do not know we would expect them to read it all the
way, or to read every section in depth anyway. They have
specific things pointed out during their orientation, and
the health and safety segment is one of those and it is
       then a reference document.

  Q. When crew members start, you said they are more likely to
have accidents when they start, or in the first few months
when they are getting used to the procedures and things
       like that?
       A. I suppose it is a bit like riding a bicycle. There is
so much to learn to start off with that it is easy to get a
few things wrongs, and in getting them wrong, one of the
outcomes could be burns or cuts, the sort of injuries we
       were talking about.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is right then, is it? They are more
       likely to have accidents?
       A. I think from my understanding of safety, in general,
the two groups of people who are more likely to have
accidents are the new people, and then the people that have
been there for a very long time, because they become rather
complacent. Again it has not happened to me, so far in
terms of anything bad, so I am safe.

MS. STEEL: Do you encourage employees to work slower when they
       start?
       A. No.

  Q. No?
       A. No, I think naturally they would be slower in that they
are learning to do something. Certainly that is my own
       experience in learning things.

  Q. But you do not encourage them to take a long time, to get
familiar with everything, and to take their time flipping
burgers and matters like that, in order that they are less
       likely to have accidents?
       A. Well, I mean certainly when they are being taught they
