       total fat and dietary fat.

  Q. Yes?
       A. So that gives me an element of confidence and
certainly the FAO WHO 1994 report says much the same thing.

  Q. In that case there is not much between us, I have to say,
because you and I discussed this last time and I put to it
you that simply because such a body, whether it be the
Scottish Department or the WHO or indeed one of these COMO
panels, makes a recommendation, is very far from saying
that it is satisfied that X causes Y, and you agreed with
       me?
       A. Is there a statement about that in the WHO report?

  Q. Yes, THERE is. I think it is only fair you should see it.
My Lord, it is tab 24 of orange 4, my Lord. 5th October
       1994, page 53.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I remember we had this problem before.
       A. I think, my Lord, I know what Mr. Arnott is talking
       about.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is in the witness bundle.
       A. I have a recollection.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is not in there.
       A. I have a recollection, my Lord, that what Mr. Arnott
       may be referring to --

MS. STEEL: Well, if we pass up my copy.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is there a spare copy somewhere? We managed
       to produce one before.

MR. RAMPTON: We have got one here, my Lord.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think it is better that you hang on to your
       own copy. (Same handed).
       A. Thank you.

MR. RAMPTON: I take it you are pretty familiar with this
       document?
       A. Well, it is a lot of words and a lot of pages.

  Q. Well, true enough. Skip a lot of pages to page 91?
       A. 91?

  Q. Right-hand column "fat consumption." This is the section
which is headed, whatever it may mean, integrating
information on nutrition and dietary relationships to
disease. And after the first big paragraph, this is about
total fat consumption, as I have understood it, then it
says, after that first big paragraph: Table 11 page 67
summarizes the links between diet and cancer. It suggests
that a high intake of total fat may also promote the
development of a number of cancers. The evidence cannot be
considered sufficiently strong to be termed causal but most
expert groups now consider it prudent to reduce fat intakes
in Western societies from the prevailing figure of about
