Day 208 - 24 Jan 96 - Page 18

  Q. Then there was no rap session between 27th July 1993 and
17th June 1994. You do not remember that?
       A. No.

  Q. There were not that regular, were they?
       A. To be perfectly honest with you, we could have had
them, I do not know. You just may not have the notes on
them. Things get lost occasionally. If there is no, you
know -- it would have been left in the Manager's office.

  Q. I certainly recall seeing one store audit where it said
that there had not been any ---
       A. That may well have been the case. I do not know.

  Q. -- rap sessions. Can you just tell us the current
       definition of "hustle"?
       A. I would not be sure of the exact phraseology, but it
would be something along the lines of "efficient use of
time and movement". Other than that, I do not remember the
       rest of it.

  Q. Can you remember what the definition used to be?
       A. So far as I was concerned, it was "go as quickly as you
can, as safely as you can", i.e. no running.

  Q. Before the change in definition, people had run behind the
       counter, had they not?
       A. Yes. I would not disagree with that at all. But it is
down to the individual Manager running the front on that
       day.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you want to have the five-minute break
now? I was going to have it at quarter to 12 anyway.

MS. STEEL: I know which question I want to ask next.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us have it now. It does not matter. We
have to have it some time.

                      (Short adjournment)

MS. STEEL: You said in paragraph 9 of your statement that you
have never experienced Managers using the schedule as a
tool of discipline, as Mike alleges, and they have always
been happy to meet your scheduling requests, whenever
possible. Other people have complained about that though,
       have they not?
       A. Not that I am aware of.

  Q. If you look, for example, at page 195 in the rap session
notes, which are the notes for 16th January 1992, under
"Sean Richards Second Assistant", the third paragraph
says: "Should change his attitude towards the crew. Can
use hours scheduled to advantage over crew." Do you
       remember that?
       A. No, I do not.

  Q. You do not remember it. You were not sure whether you had
been at this rap session or not?
       A. No. I may well have been.
