Day 289 - 29 Oct 96 - Page 39

got them. I think, when I raised it again, I was advised
to write to him in New Zealand. But with the amount of
other things we have had to do in this case, that is one
thing I have not actually found time to do.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Right. Now, how much more have you got on
       actual slaughter of chickens?

MS. STEEL: I do not think that I have got anything left on
slaughter of chickens, but there are a few points that I
wanted to refer to in the statement of Clare Druce.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us do that. I will read the whole of
her, but I would like you to point me at what the points
are which you think are important.

MS. STEEL: OK. I have really only got rough notes of this, so
I am going to have to -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: All I want you to do -- and you can do it
this afternoon -- is give me the headlines (is the phrase
I have used) for the matters which you think she gave
       important evidence on.

MS. STEEL: Right. My notes are completely chaotic on this.
Is it possible -- I am actually really totally exhausted.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Tell me what -----

MS. STEEL: Is it possible that I could type them up this
       evening?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is. But I would like to you tell me, how
are we going on rearing and slaughter? The chickens are
the greater part of it, I think.

MS. STEEL: Yes. (Pause) I do not really know. I actually
thought I would have finished the whole lot today, before
I started, but it is taking longer than I expected.

MR JUSTICE BELL: That means you hope to finish tomorrow,
       presumably, the whole lot?

MS. STEEL: Sorry. I would hope to, but, bearing in mind that
       the chickens part ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not say that to give you a deadline on
particular items. You know how much time you have overall
anyway. I made my comments about that the other day. What
we will do, anyway, is break off now. What do we go on to
       after rearing and slaughter?

  MS. STEEL: Which issue?

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: Packaging or food poisoning.

MR JUSTICE BELL: Who is going to deal with that?
