     1 McDonald's recycling programme?
              A. At McDonald's, yes, there certainly is. There is a
2 programme to recycle almost one third of our waste that is
generated at the store which is corrugated shipment
     3 containers.

4 Q. I understand, but post-consumer waste we are talking
              about?
5 A. McDonald's is the consumer of the corrugated shipment
              container, so that is post-consumer.
     6
         Q. Post-customer waste, we are talking about the packaging.
     7
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is that your sphere?
8 A. It is not my area of expertise. I do help McDonald's
in doing the prototype testing of recycling systems, but I
9 would not get involved with national expansion, for
instance. I think Mr. Langert could talk to you quite a
10 bit about the recycling programmes at McDonald's. He has
more experience with that than I do of that.
    11
MR. MORRIS: Is any of your packaging printed with the word
    12 "recyclable" on it?
              A. The corrugated shipment container is.
    13
         Q. But the rest is not?
14 A. In the United States, no, it is not.

15 Q. Is the United States packaging, as far as you know, in the
forefront, the McDonald's system worldwide, is that the
16 pioneering country where the most environmental concern
              takes place?
17 A. I could not say that. I think that every continent
and country we have that we do business, that McDonald's
18 does business on the Perseco sells and packaging has very
different environmental considerations, even in each
19 country. We all have different environmental
considerations than will Thailand, than will Germany, than
    20 will the US.

21 So we provide packaging that meets our local and regional
needs as best we can, understanding the issues that there
22 are. I think McDonald's leads the food service industry
in the US. I cannot compare to the national markets
23 because that is not my responsibility.

24 Q. Are you aware that after the war in Europe there was an
enormous amount of recycled paper used for packaging?
    25 A. Which war?

26 Q. The second world war?
              A. I was born in the 60s. I was not aware.
    27
         Q. You have not studied the history of recycled paper?
28 A. No, not for Europe at all, and barely for the US.

29 Q. Right. But would you say that recycling paper is not just
a recent phenomenon; there have been recycling industries?
30 A. I do not know that much about the history of recycling
paper, but I do know that corrugated shipping containers
