Day 119 - 02 May 95 - Page 46
it up through the procedure of complaint to their next
senior. On rare occasions -- I think we hold them more
often now -- it is a crew opinion survey but you need to
talk to Lyn Mead about that. She is coming.

MR. MORRIS: So, you have to go through each part of the
hierarchy before you get to the one above?
A. Yes, there is an open door procedure. They can
actually reach Paul Preston.

Q. But it would take some time to do that?
A. Well, yes, especially as he is hardly ever here.
Now, finally, of course, there is myself, if it is really
serious.

Q. This is now?
A. Yes.

Q. We are talking about when you were Head of Personnel
though.
A. No, the Ombudsman did not exist then.

Q. Did many things actually reach you when you were there in
Head of Personnel or did they all get sorted?
A. I think most of things I got to know about were either
brought to me by my Field Personnel Officers or reported to
me in my regular meetings with Carmel Flatley, or when
I went on tour. When I used to go on tour to a region,
when it was an official tour I used to have an interview
with the regional manager, the field personnel manager, the
security manager, and then I would tour the stores and talk
to staff at all levels.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Mr. Morris, unless you put anything to the
contrary, I am assuming that the system we looked at on
Wednesday afternoon, which is pink 11 tab 3, page 151, is
what actually prevailed. If there is a suggestion that it
did not work, then by all means put it.

MR. MORRIS: No, it is more the how it worked I was trying to
get at rather than -----

MR. RAMPTON: For the purpose of cross-examination, I have said
it before, I do say it again, I said I would complain if
I received a lack of co-operation and I do. This was dealt
with not only in the Crew Handbook but by some five or six
pages of evidence-in-chief by Mr. Nicholson. If there is
to be a challenge to the veracity of that evidence let it
be put. This is just another voyage of discovery.

MR. MORRIS: I cannot see how it is a voyage of discovery.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause there because I am afraid it gives
the impression that on this topic, at least, and this is
not a general comment, you do not know what your target is.

MR. MORRIS: No, I do.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Because we have actually had the evidence
about the grievance procedure. I have no reason to believe
