Day 298 - 11 Nov 96 - Page 28

And there are also the figures for the number of people
eating at McDonald's by frequency break, 1993/1994 data,
which states that 0.18 percent were eating at McDonald's
nearly every day, which would translate in Mr. Fairgrieve's
view to about 40,000 people, and that 1.77 percent were
eating at McDonald's several times a week, which would
translate to 385,000 people, and that 8.76 percent were
eating at McDonald's once a week, which would be 1,905,000
people.

MR. MORRIS: They are added together, those percentages,
because it is once a week up to several times a week. So
you have to add the 385,000 and 40,000 on top. It was the
same for the previous figures of 11 percent and 4 percent,
it is actually 15 percent eat once a week by the previous
figures.

MS. STEEL: The point being that even on Mr. Fairgrieve's own
calculations, there are substantial numbers of people who
are eating at McDonald's on a frequent basis, and even if
you want to ignore that people are eating there once a
week, there are still -- it depends on which set of figures
you use, but -- well, I think this was where we get the
other figures from that we mentioned the other day, between
round about half a million people and a million people who
are eating there several times a week or more often.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where do you -----

MS. STEEL: This is the UK, yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Where do you get half a million to a
million? I mean, maybe you do not get it from the figures
you have just given me.

MS. STEEL: Yes, we do. It is 385,000 plus 40,000, which is
----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: 425,000.

MS. STEEL: Yes. So that is 75,000 short of half a million,
but I don't know how much that matters. I was trying to
make sort of a general point. Those two percentages, 0.18
percent and 1.77 percent, come to roughly 2 percent.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: Whereas, on the other chart that we have got,
several times a week comes to 4 percent. So if you then
translated that 4 percent into projected number of people
visiting across the UK, you would get the round about one
million people visiting several times per week.

I don't know why Mr. Rampton is snorting.

MR. RAMPTON: Because, my Lord, the figures are all set out in
the two sheets from Omnimas 1995 and one knows exactly what
the numbers are.
