Day 032 - 06 Oct 94 - Page 22

  Q. This survey in the early 80s -- obviously it seems to me
that the period you were concerned mostly when you were
analysing fast food was the 80s as a whole; is that
       correct?
       A. In fact, the previous decade to writing the book was
the mid 70s to mid-80s, so it is that range.

  Q. Since that time the fastfood contribution to the diet has
       increased?
       A. I think we can make that assumption simply from the
numbers of outlets, fastfood outlets, that are serving
fastfood, but it would be interesting to have the
company's own data on numbers of meals served.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We have had some data from the company, but
can I just look at table 25? Do you understand that to be
where the children have ever spent their pocket money on
any of those items, rather than doing it every week or
once a month or with any particular frequency?

MR. MORRIS: I think it is the day before.
       A. No, I am not sure it is, judging by the paragraph
       prior to that table.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Without knowing, I would have thought there
would be more than 1 per cent of 11 to 12 year-olds and
more than 5 per cent of 13 to 15 year-olds now who buy a
hamburger from time to time out of money their parents
have given them, but there is no way of knowing. You do
not have any up-to-date information on that?
       A. I do not.

MR. MORRIS: Is there a table of conclusions to this report or
       recommendations?
       A. There are general impressions given on pages 3 and 4.

  Q. We do not have those pages.
       A. To be honest, they do not say a great deal that would
       bear on this matter.

  Q. So they do not have conclusions. What is the purpose of
this survey then? What is the role of the British
Nutrition Foundation? What is the purpose of this survey?
       A. Well, the British Nutrition Foundation, as the court
may already know, has a large proportion of its funding
coming from the food industry, both retailers and
manufacturers and so forth. Much of their research is
done with a view to market analysis as much as it is for
the sake of academic enquiry. I would say that this was a
good example of a mixture of both, where there is both
academic enquiry and market research interest being
       reflected.

  Q. Could we safely move on from that document or is there
anything else you want to point out? There is nothing
       in -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: There is nothing in that document which
would be the source for the HOTAG figures, is there?
