Day 061 - 05 Dec 94 - Page 63

  Q. But you are not interested, so why should they care?
       A. Of course they care because they would lose their
       business, would they not?

  Q. Why would they lose their business?
       A. You have made the point about what ends up in the food,
the food that is ultimately served to McDonald's
customers. If there were problems in the restaurants with
eggs that we were serving, then we would surely change our
supplier. We would not stay with that supplier.

  Q. Where it says "No routine antibiotics or performance
enhancers are used", do you know why they mentioned
       antibiotics?
       A. No, I do not.

  Q. You do not know whether McDonald's is worried about that or
       not?
       A. Well, the industry would certainly be worried about it.

  Q. Right.
       A. And again they have to conform to a code of practice.
As it says here, strict attention is paid to the code of
practice regarding the welfare of our hens.

  Q. If antibiotics were routinely being given to chickens,
young chickens, at Sun Valley, would that bother you?
       A. Young chickens?

  Q. Yes.
       A. How old?

  Q. The young chicks.
       A. Not if you are talking day-old chicks, it would not
       bother me.

  Q. Up to what point would it not bother you, up to what age?
       A. Well, I think during the first week of their life that
they are treated for diseases, obviously, they do not want
the birds to contract diseases and they are treated for
that reason, but treatment should not go on beyond that.

  Q. So that is a routine thing?
       A. Unless there was a major outbreak or problem.

  Q. So you are aware that the chickens at Sun Valley are
routinely dosed in their first week of life?
       A. Certainly I am aware of the day old.

MR. MORRIS: I think you said in your examination by Mr. Rampton
that the first McDonald's position on animal welfare was in
1992 as these subjects became topical; before that you had
       not had many enquiries?
       A. I certainly said the first McDonald's public statement
       was at that time.

  Q. Right. So, it was in fact to deal with public ----
       A. Of course.

  Q. --- concerns and information, whatever. You have visited
