1 women respectively, while mean 24 hour urinary exretion
was 3979 mg and 3036 mg respectively. A wide range of
2 daily urinary Na extretion of 18- 150 mg has been noted in
normal children." One question about that, Professor
3 Wheelock: In those cases it did appear that urinary
              excretion exceeded the intakes?
4 A. That is right, because the intakes did not include the
              discretionary salt in other words.
     5
         Q. What does it mean 'discretionary salt'?
6 A. That is what we put on a table.

7 Q. Sodium occurs either naturally or by prior insertion in
              food anyway?
8 A. Well, it is either there to begin with; it is either
added during processing or it is added at the table.
     9
         Q. But the figures given here excluded only the salt added at
    10 the table?
              A. Yes.
    11
         Q. It included salt added in the process of manufacture or
    12 processing, is that right?
              A. Yes.
    13
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I understand those figures? How do I
    14 relate 25.4 to 25.3.4?

15 A. Well, 25.3.4 is giving the recommendations that the
              panel were making.
    16
         Q. Those are daily amounts?
17 A. That is right, yes. That would be, for adults, 1600mg
per day. Then what 25.4 is dealing with is the actual
18 intake in this country at the present time which is much
              higher.
    19
MR. RAMPTON: Can I ask you this: I am grateful for his
    20 Lordship having raised that.

21 MR. JUSTICE BELL: The error is totally simple. It is
milligrams in one paragraph and grammes in the other, and
22 I had failed to notice that.

23 MR. RAMPTON: Can I ask a supplementary question and then we
will perhaps, my Lord, we leave the rest after lunch in
24 one sense at least. Professor Wheelock, the
recommendation in 2.3.5 you have told us is a
25 recommendation, in effect, for a minimum intake for the
              maintenance of good health?
    26 A. That is right.

27 Q. Whereas the figures given in 25.4 are a reflection of what
it is believed is the actual intake of people in this
    28 country?
              A. That is right.
    29
         Q. As between the 1600 mg suggested as a minimum in 25.3.4
30 and the actual figures suggested at 25.4, take a man
intake of 3,376 milligrams per day (it is about the middle
