Day 019 - 27 Jul 94 - Page 41

1 which allows bone growth. It is the bit that actually
multiplies to produce more bone. In
2 tibiodischondroplasia, the cells that come from that layer
              of multiplication do not actually differentiate into bone;
3 they remain as cartilage. So you end up with actually a
plug of cartilage in the middle of the bone, and that is
4 what tibiodischondroplasia is all about.

5 Q. As you see, it has a gait score of three, that is
something that will effect its movement?
6 A. Yes, you can get cases of TD, so-called,
tibiodischondroplasia, where there is not severe
7 lameness. So it can, it may or it may not be, associated
with severe lameness -- not always.
     8
         Q. 520, can you tell us what is written at the bottom of that
     9 or what that means?
              A. I will try.
    10
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Some of the birds with a gait score of two
11 and three are quite heavy, are they not?
              A. Yes, they are indeed.
    12
         Q. The one with three at 514 is over three kilos?
13 A. Yes, true. There is a thickened hypertrophic zone on
the left femur. This means that the growth plate or this
14 layer of cartilage which is allowing the bone to grow --
it is a proliferative area -- is actually thickened. You
15 are getting more differentiation of the cells in the
              formation of bone.
    16
         Q. Right. 534?
17 A. Yes, at the Comments, "angulation significant",
I think that is what that probably means. Let us go to
18 angulation higher up the table. On the right leg there
              was -----
    19
         MR. JUSTICE BELL: You were?
20 A. In the right leg there is angulation which causes the
leg to go valgus, that is spreading out, and I think the
21 comments is just drawing attention to that; it is saying
angulation is significant and, in fact, it is a grade 2,
22 so it is just highlighting that observation.

23 MS. STEEL: Right. The comment in the next column?
              A. Nasty one. I do not know.
    24
MR. RAMPTON: It could be nothing.
    25
         MR. JUSTICE BELL: Angulation?
26 A. That is quite probable. Please accept my apologies
for the lack of clarity on this.
    27
MS. STEEL: It is all right.
28 A. At least they are not covered in blood and all the
other muck that was on them.
    29
MR. JUSTICE BELL: The greater angulation in the right leg has
30 gone with a gait score of three, has it, or is that?
              A. I am sorry, I missed you. I beg your pardon.
