Day 090 - 16 Feb 95 - Page 17

  MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not think that is -- that may not be the
situation you particularly have in mind here, but it is an
attempt to illustrate it. I do not think you need go
scouring through transcripts just to look for every moment
when you might have to do that. If you have something in
your mind at the moment, then just put it.

  MS. STEEL: Right.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You can ask on reflection does he share
Dr. Gregory's view; you could ask him is that a view that a
perfectly respectable expert would be entitled to come to
-- put it any way you want.

MS. STEEL: Right. Dr. Gregory actually said in evidence that
the reason that he visited the Sun Valley hatchery was to
look at your macerator and see how good it was and to talk
to you, well, Sun Valley Poultry, I do not know whether it
was personally, about the problems of changing from carbon
dioxide to maceration. Are you aware of that?
       A. No, I was not involved in his visit to the hatchery or
the discussions that took place there.

  Q. Were you aware of plans to change from carbon dioxide to
       maceration?
       A. No, I was not.

  Q. Has that ever been discussed?
       A. It has been discussed in the past, but I was not aware
       of anything recently.

  Q. When was it discussed in the past?
       A. At various times. Various times when I visit the
hatchery, I look at the process that they are using and
I have always been satisfied that we should maintain the
process as it has always stood.

  Q. So was there somebody else at Sun Valley who felt it might
       be better to change?
       A. I cannot answer that, I do not know.

  Q. When you were discussing it within Sun Valley, presumably,
there was some reason for discussing it. I mean, if you
       all felt -----
       A. Normally, on something like that people would ask my
opinion and I would give it, and my opinion was that the
gasing should continue as it has always been done.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think what you are being asked, directly or
indirectly, is has there been concern among people at Sun
Valley or of anyone at Sun Valley in the past that there is
a better, a more humane method?
       A. That may be so, but I really do not recall any
particular discussions that went along those lines.

MS. STEEL: Dr. Gregory actually says that Sun Valley Poultry,
people at Sun Valley Poultry, were very receptive to his
comments, but you do not know anything about that, you say?
