Day 159 - 20 Jul 95 - Page 29

       A. No, nobody.

  Q. You have no recollection?
       A. No, not at all.

  Q. Do you remember seeing any leaflets inviting crew members
       to join a union?
       A. No.

  Q. Has the question whether crew members should join a union
ever come to your notice in your 20 years at Seven Sisters?
       A. No.

  Q. Who ------

MS. STEEL: Sorry, can you hold on, please?

MR. RAMPTON: Were you trained before you started your career as
       a crew person in McDonald's?
       A. Not before. We was trained on a day.

  Q. Sorry, I mean you.
       A. We had a meeting. When I first started, the store was
not quite open, it was not quite ready, so Paul -----

  Q. It was, I think, the second store in the whole country, was
       it not?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. After Woolwich?
       A. Yes, that is it. What happened, we had a meeting -- on
the Thursday, I started on the Thursday. The store opened
on the Monday, following Monday. On the Thursday and
Friday we had done the cleaning, you know, the Ajax-ing of
the stainless steel to get it all clean for Monday. Then
on the Sunday we had a crew meeting, what we called a crew
meeting, wore our uniforms and to be told what would
       happen.

MS. STEEL: Sorry, can you pause because I missed quite a lot of
       that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: All you need to ask is when, if ever, there
was a training day. That is the only important matter
amongst all that detail. (To the witness): Can you
remember when, if at all, there was a training day?
       A. Oh, yes, there used to be training hours. There was
       not a whole day.

  Q. But when did you first receive training?
       A. Well, on the first day I went there, when I first
started at 2 o'clock, I was trained by Paul Preston.

MS. STEEL: In actual fact, I cannot actually understand what
it says on the CaseView. It says: "We had a meeting on
Thursday, I started on Thursday" -----
       A. No, I started on the Thursday.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You know, that really is detail which -----
