fairly and it has been documented extensively.

  Q. If you take two twins and restrict one of their's movements
so they cannot go out walking, run around, you stick them
in a cage and feed them as much as they want to eat, the
one that is in the cage and cannot move around is the one
that is going to put on the weight, is it not?
       A. Let me clarify that and give you a specific example:
Take two chickens, from when they first start their life
you put one in a cage, you put one outdoors. You will see
that the chicken that is in a cage will gain more weight
than the chicken that is outside.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Ms. Steel is putting it to you by her
question that that in part, at least, is because the one in
the cage is less mobile. That is, I think, what the
purpose of her previous question was. What do you say
       about that?
       A. OK. If the chicken in a cage thinks that that is their
environment, that is their house, if he does not know that
there is an outdoors, and if their biological functions are
fulfilled in terms of feed, water and light, then he will
gain more weight. He will be a healthier animal.

MS. STEEL: You are associating gaining weight with being
healthier; there is no reason why those two things should
       be automatically linked, is there?
       A. You can make -- there is a high correlation with that.

  Q. What else is there for them to do in a cage apart from sit
       there and put on weight?
       A. I am sorry, I did not hear your question.

  Q. What else is there for them to do in the cage apart from
sit there and put on weight, eat and put on weight?
       A. That is their environment. If I may clarify one thing
that, hopefully, will explain my point? There is a
distinct difference between humans and animals. If you
look, and it has been fairly documented in psychology books
and research, a major difference between humans and animals
is that we are aware, it is what is called an awareness
factor. We know our position on this earth. I could see
myself, I can envision myself out of this planet and look
down from the moon, look at Earth and see the continent and
see the islands and that I know where I am. I know I am in
court right now. I know that I have a choice to go
somewhere else. I know that something else is out there.
Animals do not have that ability. Animals do not have that
choice, and that is how they evolve. That is the big
       difference.

  Q. How do you know they have not got that ability?
       A. If you let me finish? An animal who is born and raised
in a cage does not know, it is not aware, that there is an
outdoors. It is not aware that he has a choice. An animal
assumes that that is their environment and it will be
comfortable in that environment. That is a fact.

  Q. That is an assumption you are making?
       A. It is a big difference. It is an assumption that has
