Day 124 - 10 May 95 - Page 54
United States, I think they probably would be a little more
zealous about separating the materials than in other parts
of the country.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What happens to it then? Do you know, is it
paper particularly which is recycled because you have
largely gone over to paper wrapping, is it not?
A. It is paper. It is cardboard. The window panels or
the panels underneath the windows of our restaurant are
made with recycled cardboard materials. We have had
actually the building itself made with recycled materials.

MR. MORRIS: No, but in terms of the actual specific packaging
waste the customers put into separate bins, what then
happens to that or if you know?
A. It is picked up by -- it is collected by outside
companies, taken to a plant where they process it and then
it is used by, you know, various companies. Again, that
whole process is constantly under review and study to see
what value it presents to the stream, the user stream.

Q. Are you aware of a similar scheme in New Zealand?
A. I am not aware of what is going on in New Zealand, no.

Q. If I could move on to another matter: I am sorry we are
dodging about with issues but that is just part of the way
it has developed. When you referred to ronald mcdonald you
said something like he was a representative of the Company,
obviously not one but the ronald mcdonald character. When
ronald mcdonalds do their whatever they do, safety shows
and kids' shows, how can you feel confident that they are
aware, they truly represent what you believe McDonald's
stands for?
A. Well, we have some assurance of that because they are
put through a rather intensive training programme. They
receive, and after they complete the training programme,
then they are able to practise their craft, so to speak,
with another Ronald, experienced Ronald.

There is frequent communication with all of the individuals
that wear the uniform. We in the past have had Ronald
McDonald conventions every year where they are updated on
different acts that can be added to their magic shows or,
you know, some of their exhibitions, performances.

There are various things that are communicated during those
conventions. I believe the conventions now are held every
other year, but there is ongoing communication that takes
place with the Ronalds. They are expected to -- I mean,
they are held to a pretty high standard. From time to time
they receive performance reviews from representatives of
our local ad agency as well as members of our local
advertising co-op which is made up of various franchisees
of the area. Some of the larger metropolitan areas in
America will have more than one Ronald because of the
number of requests. So, there is ongoing communication,
ongoing review, of the Ronalds just to make certain that
they are doing a good quality job.

So, we try not to take a chance on that. I think we have
