Day 155 - 14 Jul 95 - Page 36

  Q. You threw them away because you did not want any talk or
thought of joining unions in your store, did you?
       A. That is not true.

  Q. You then said: "Two or three days later I went into the
crew room and saw a blow up poster of the same leaflet
posted on the crew notice board. I took it down and put in
the bin." Why did you do that?
       A. The same reason as before, the notice board is for
specific notices. There were notices that sometimes that
crew put up regarding social events, etc. etc..
I preferred that people approached me and asked me my
permission to put notices up, basically, to try to keep a
       clean house, if you like.

  Q. You could have provided another notice board for crew to
put up the notices that they felt they would like on their
       crew room notice board?
       A. If that come up at a rap session, I would have done so,
but the notice board was actually very, very long.

  Q. I see, so it was quite big, but the crew were not allowed
to put any notices on it?
       A. No, because there was quite a lot of legal notices, and
the schedule, once you have employed more crew, the
schedule can only take about 26 people per sheet. So that
was four sheets alone of A3 paper.

  Q. But there were room for things like notices about trips to
       Alton Towers?
       A. If those were put up, they were put up with my
authorisation. If they were put up without me knowing
about it, I would have to find out the reason why because
it would have affected my business. I did not want to 30
people going to Alton Towers on Sunday morning and me not
       knowing about it.

  Q. How would putting a notice up about joining a union on your
       notice board affect your business?
       A. It had nothing to do with the business.

  Q. So there would not be a problem with having it there?
       A. If it is my restaurant and it is nothing to do with
McDonald's or anything related to McDonald's, then I do not
see no reason why it should be up there.

  Q. It is the crew room, is it not; it is for the crew to,
supposedly, relax in during their breaks, perhaps as matter
of interest to them, perhaps they would like a union notice
       on their notice board?
       A. The crew room is also my responsibility.

  Q. You felt you wanted to censor what the crew could look at?
       A. Not censor. If it looked tacky, if it was
unprofessional, if it was not work related, if it did not
have my authorisation, then it did have no place there.

  Q. So at the next rap session or at the next crew meeting you
suggested to crew that they provided a nicer looking, more
professional poster about unions and you would be happy to
