Day 202 - 11 Jan 96 - Page 13
of bit more vigour than someone who has been round in that
position for three or four years. If things just seem to be
going along fine, you go into a new position and tend to
check and look into everything to make sure it is OK.

MR. MORRIS: It is a good way of proving yourself, is it not, by
stamping on those below you?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. It is -----

MR. MORRIS: I am asking a sensible question. It is quite
reasonable.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If it was a question, rather than speaking in
generalities, put that it was Neil Skehel trying to make an
impression by stamping on people.

MR. MORRIS: Was Neil Skehel trying to make an impression by
stamping on people below him to show what a good area
Supervisor he was?
A. I would say absolutely not, because he would get no
recognition whatsoever for stamping on people; not
something that I would praise him for at all.

Q. I might as well put it, while I am thinking of it. Really,
is it not, the whole management structure of McDonald's is:
Stamp on people below you and crawl to people above you;
would you not agree with that?
A. It could not be further from the truth at all.
Absolutely not. The culture of McDonald's is the other end
of the spectrum to that: it is built on mutual trust and
respect; it is built on team work; it is built on pride.

Q. People who are in the management of McDonald's, do they
feel loyal to the Company that they work for?
A. I would say so, yes.

Q. Including yourself?
A. I have worked for them for 13 years. I would suggest
I am quite loyal to the Company.

Q. Is it more than just a job? You feel a pride, and an
identity even, in being part of that system?
A. I certainly feel proud to work for McDonald's, but, in
the end, it is just a means of making a living to provide
for my wife and family. So, it is in that perspective that
I view it a very good way of doing so.

Q. You are dependent on McDonald's for your income, are you?
A. Indeed, yes.

Q. You say about working as a team -- I am talking about the
management as a whole. Do people in management positions
talk about a whole range of issues together, formally and
informally?
A. Yes.

Q. The meetings with Ray Coton -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is a slightly different topic, so we will
