Day 078 - 26 Jan 95 - Page 43

  Q. They are the major suppliers to McDonald's in Germany?
       A. Sudfleisch are a big supplier to McDonald's in Germany.

  Q. Do you know if they are the main one?
       A. I do not know. I do not have intimate knowledge of
       their buying pattern in Germany.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: While Mr. Morris is thinking, if you look at
"A Great Partnership", the photograph on the first page,
on the left there is a man operating a buggy with something
on a pallet; is that a combo?
       A. That is a combo bin, sir, with -----

  Q. With boned beef in?
       A. Yes, that is a combo boneless forequarter meat.

MR. MORRIS: So when you take a core from that combo it goes
       straight into the top?
       A. Yes. It takes five. It takes five three foot cores
       about two inches in diameter.

MS. STEEL: You said that you are currently buying beef from
Botswana but that it is not going to McDonald's, yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. This morning you said that as beef comes into the plant you
do not sort it and say: "That is McDonald's", "That is
       supermarket"; it is just beef?
       A. Yes.

  Q. So how do those two things square?
       A. Well, because the main McDonald's plant is Milton
Keynes and the private labelled plant is Scunthorpe.

  Q. So all beef from abroad you are saying goes to the
       Scunthorpe plant, does it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. But not the Australian and the Canadian ones that you were
talking about -- sorry, the Canadian and American ones?
       A. No, in fact, if we had brought anything in under the
Hilton scheme it would have gone into Milton Keynes.

  Q. Some of the beef used in Scunthorpe, though, does go to
       McDonald's, does it not?
       A. Yes, there are McDonald's lines at Scunthorpe.

  Q. So then how do you differentiate between that beef?
       A. You have got to be able to see the factory and the
production set-up. You have got a McDonald's grinding
system in one part of the factory, and then you have got a
private label grinding system in another part of the
       factory.

  Q. You said this morning, though, that you did not
differentiate. Why are you changing your mind now?
       A. I am not changing my mind. I do not differentiate
between meat coming in to Milton Keynes. Meat comes in to
Scunthorpe. It is only a matter of allocation in which
direction it goes. The same standards apply to it in terms
