Day 095 - 02 Mar 95 - Page 60

have you been to those areas?
       A. Yes, I have.

  Q. The four more northerly?
       A. Yes, I have.

  Q. You have been to those areas of Brazil?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What sort of country is it there?
       A. In terms of water rainfall it is less than what you can
expect here in England. It is not by any means anything
       close to a rainforest.

  Q. Are there trees?
       A. Yes, there are trees.

  Q. What sorts of trees?
       A. The trees that you will see here on a regular
environment are nothing close to what you would see .

  Q. Is there open land? Is there grassland?
       A. Yes, there is grassland.

  Q. Is it the sort of country one calls Savannah or pampas?
       A. Yes, very much.

  Q. I am going to do the best I can. The Defendants have the
document. I have a here a book edited by Dr. Pattison.
I will show it first to his Lordship.

MS. STEEL: Can we have a look because I have not brought my
       copy to court?

MR. RAMPTON: Yes. It is those two photographs there. There
are two coloured photographs. Show his Lordship first.
Can you just, Dr. Gomez Gonzalez, please, read out what the
captions of those photographs are, the top one first,
       please?
       A. It says "Typical broiler house with side curtains used
       in hotter climates".

  Q. The picture below?
       A. "Broilers in open-sided houses in Argentina where the
       curtains have been raised".

  Q. You were telling us the other day about the broiler houses
in southern parts of the United States. How similar are
those photographs there to what you were describing?
       A. Very similar.

MS. STEEL: Perhaps he should explain what the difference is
because from the description given the other day I seem to
remember actually it was quite different to that.

MR. RAMPTON: I do not myself wish to ask that question. Do you
see any significant differences with what you were
       describing the other day?
       A. No.
