significantly different from what prevails in this country,
first of all. Then if Mr. Morris or Ms. Steel want to put
to you "if such and such were the position" which they may
have got from the evidence, then give your view on it. But
what I do not want you to do is just be given your head to
make an assessment of the evidence which has already been
       called.

MS. STEEL: I do not know whether "assessment" was the right
word. I think it was rather "comment" on -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It made me anxious to hear it, which is why
       I intervened as I did.

  MR. MORRIS:  There are very specific practices done or not done;
obviously, you do not need to go through every country, but
you can say, for example, anything that you have noticed,
was something that concerned you, but if you have,
obviously, any personal experience or knowledge from other
countries as well about the prevalent conditions there,
that may be useful as well. Obviously, we do not want to
spend a long time on this but if you can point out the
things you were most concerned about?
       A. Yes. I will try to do that. There is a general
statement about the practices in the USA. There are
actually some significant omissions. For instance, the USA
is not dealt with very fully, nor are France, Italy and
Greece. The American statement I saw does, I think,
mislead a bit in this question of what I called the stun
       killing.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What are you referring to now?
       A. This is a paper dated and signed 6th June 1993 from
       Fernando Gomez Gonzales.

MR. RAMPTON: That is no good; that is a witness statement, my
       Lord.

THE WITNESS: These are statements that, I understand, were
handed in court. You were asking -----

MR. MORRIS: I am not sure if Dr. Gomez Gonzales actually took
       his statement as read.

  MR. RAMPTON: He did not.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, he did not. He gave evidence.

MR. RAMPTON: I went through the matters.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: My recollection is that he was not asked to
adopt his statement as part of his evidence-in-chief.

MR. MORRIS: Can I make one general comment here, we are feeling
under enormous pressure to complete this evidence as
quickly as possible for the benefit of the court. We are
doing our best. It does not really help us or the witness
if everyone is phrenetic about it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am not being phrenetic. I am trying to
