Day 132 - 07 Jun 95 - Page 44

management training package that I have helped McDonald's
       with.

  Q. But how would they know who you were?
       A. Because normally I introduce myself when I am in the
store. People know why we are there and they would come
and talk to me or whatever.

  Q. They would know you have been hired by McDonald's to do
       some investigation or whatever?
       A. They would not think of me as being hired by McDonald's
particularly. They would say: "This is Chris Purslow who
helps us with health and safety" and the manager would
       normally introduce me like that.

  Q. Just on your report on accident rates at McDonald's, the
one after page 24, I cannot actually read what it says at
       the bottom on my document.
       A. No, mine is pretty poor too.

  Q. I do not know if we can get an accurate copy?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you read yours? Do you have your
original or an original there? Although I cannot read it,
I have not asked about it because it has not been put in
evidence so far, so I am not concerned to read it.

MR. MORRIS: I do not necessarily want to put it in to
evidence. I just want to be able to read it, so maybe if
someone could give me a copy or it could be read out -- not
       as evidence.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you have a copy, Mr. Atkinson? It is the
first page of tab 41. Towards the bottom you can see it
reads: "The figures stated, therefore, represent the
following equivalent staffing levels" and then it is very
difficult, if not impossible, to read.

MR. ATKINSON: Should I read it out?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, because before he decides whether to draw
attention to it, Mr. Morris wants to read it. Could you
give that to Mr. Morris, Mr. Riley, please?

MR. MORRIS: As far as I can see, it is OK to read it out.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think all it says is, if you divide the
number of staff by stores on the basis of a 37.5 hour week,
rather than most of them working, say, something like 20,
that is what the staffing level would be, the equivalent of
so many full-time workers. Do you want Mr. Purslow to
speak of it or not? It is entirely up to you. You have
made your point already about numbers of RIDDOR accidents
per 1,000 might be half as much or thereabouts
       because -----

MR. MORRIS: I believe these figures here -- can I ask
       Mr. Purslow?

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.
