Day 207 - 23 Jan 96 - Page 67

any old Manager and sort it out with anybody?
       A. If the crew member felt a need to go and communicate
with the same -- for instance, Geoff was not working that
day, and they felt they had a query, then I do not see any
reason why that the Manager should not deal with the
queries, you know, as quickly and as efficiently as
possible with the crew member rather than keep them
waiting, especially if it was near the end of the payroll
period, say on a Saturday, and if there was a problem with
their pay it may result in the fact that, due to the fact
that the Husky had shut down that night they may not get
the money, or whatever, they feel they are owed for a pay
       period of another two weeks.

  Q. But if they could not deal with it immediately it would
help if there was someone in particular who sorted out that
kind of problem, would it not?
       A. It is helpful to have someone to go to, yes.

  Q. The complaint is made in a rap session that crew are unsure
of who is in charge of queries, I presume you will say you
do not remember that at the time you read -- you do not
       remember reading that?
       A. No.

  Q. It is on page 199 if anyone wants to check. It also says
the crew would like a payroll surgery. Does that concern
you that they are not -- they are unsure of who is in
       charge of the queries?
       A. It does not concern me because I feel as though if the
crew want to approach a Manager or to, you know, query
their hours they can go and approach a Manager.

  Q. There is also a complaint about somebody not having a clock
card; does that happen very often?
       A. It happens that some individuals may start on a shift
       without a clock card.

  Q. So how are records kept of the hours that they are working?
       A. If they start initially on a shift and they have not
got a clock card, the Manager who is on the shift will then
put one on to the system for them.

  Q. But if somebody complains about it at a rap session,
presumably they would not be attending a rap session on
       their very first shift?
       A. No, not so far as I am aware.

  Q. So, did it sometimes happen that crew did not get clock
cards for quite some time after starting?
       A. Not to my knowledge, no.

MR. MORRIS: It is gone ten past. I do not know how long
Mr. Rampton has, whether we should rush to finish or -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: How much longer do you think you have got to
       go?

MR. MORRIS: We are not sure.
