Day 124 - 10 May 95 - Page 53
causes difficulty.
A. It does not cause difficulty. They do to some degree;
it could be better. Some areas of the country are a little
more -- seemed to be a little more concerned and exert a
little more of an effort.

MR. MORRIS: We have heard that there has been a pilot scheme in
the UK for recycling for customers to separate their
packaging into separate bins. Is there any reason you
could think of why that should not be successful? Are
people in Britain, in your experience, any different
from -----

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I do not believe Mr. Beavers can answer
that.

MR. MORRIS: It may be a policy of the Corporation.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know about any recycling project in
this country?
A. I am not immediately conversant on that subject, my
Lord. I am sure that they have initiated some type of
recycling programme. I would be very surprised in most of
the western world where McDonald's is located that they are
not engaged in some kind of recycling effort.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You see, you are going to seek to make a
point in relation to the questions you have just asked
about binning and so on. You are going to say: "Well, if
it works in the States, it could work here."

MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you find out what they do in the States
with material collected for recycling, you can do it quite
shortly. Then you can say to me, if the answer is helpful
to you: "Well, they could do that in this country too". I
mean, I can draw conclusions like that. We are not so
different from the Americans. We may be different but we
are not so different that I would expect what you can do
would be quite impossible for us.

MR. MORRIS: Someone said that we share everything in common
except the language.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let me assume that in this area of the case
anyway. Just try to find out with one or two simple
questions what they manage to achieve in the States.

MR. MORRIS (To the witness): It is not all stores, is it, in
America?
A. No, it is not.

Q. What kind of percentage of stores actually do customers do
the recycling, approximately?
A. I would say I would be just guessing and I would rather
not on that matter hazard a guess. I will tell you this.
There are certain areas of the country that are more
environmentally conscious than others. If you look at the
greenland states, for instance, the North East part of the
