Day 247 - 10 May 96 - Page 41

MR. MORRIS: One thing I wanted to know which has not come up in
the case before, under the section "McDonald's and its
People", on the third page there is some statistics as at
December 1993. There is something I have not seen before
where it says: "About 64.1 per cent are aged 20 or under"
       and this is crew.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let me just find that; where is that?

MR. MORRIS: On the third page, statistics.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: We have seen those statistics before in regard to
under 20s, but then it says:"32.38 per cent are aged
between 21 and 39", which means that 96.48 per cent at that
time were 39 years or under in the store, 39 or under.

I do not have a question to ask but I thought it was an
important statistic to bring up in terms of you. Only 9.31
per cent, the bottom statistic, are aged over 30. So, in
fact, over 90 per cent of all your workers are under 30
years old, or they were at that time. You accept that,
       yes?
       A. I accept what it says on that paper, yes.

  Q. Right.

MS. STEEL: Is the situation the same now?
       A. I would not think it is materially different, but I do
       not know the exact numbers.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: There is no reason why it should have changed
significantly in the last 15 months; is there?
       A. No, there is no reason why it should have altered. One
might go up a per cent, one down a per cent, but it is not
       significant.

MR. MORRIS: We are trying to get through this fairly quickly.
I will see if there is anything else.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Sit down and check. (Pause).

MS. STEEL: The statistic about McDonald's: "In 1993, McDonald's
becomes the second most recognised brand in the world".
Who determined that statistic or whatever?
       A. I am not sure, I would guess some marketing
institution, but No. 2 behind Coke, I think.

  Q. You do not know where it comes from?
       A. I do not know who published it, but it has been quoted
many, many, many times, by many, many, many people.

  Q. If you could go to page 11 of the History and Background to
       McDonald's?
       A. OK, page 11.

  Q. Just while we are on this point, under the "Food
       Consumption/suppliers" it says:
