1 A. It would be a combination of chlorine and another
bleaching agents, like hydrogen peroxide. Most recycled
2 paper, for example, had only been bleached the first time
it was used. When recycled paper is recycled they
3 normally do not chlorine; they use hydrogen peroxide.

4 Q. Were you involved in drawing up the corporate rainforest
              policy published in May 1989?
5 A. No, I was not. I was a Perseco employee at that time.

6 Q. So you do not know anything about that at all?
              A. I only know what our policy is.
     7
         Q. You mentioned the Costa Rican reserve which you visited
     8 with Ray Cesca?
              A. Yes.
     9
         Q. I cannot remember what you said but, was it words to the
10 effect that he was showing the local people how they can
use the forest area without destroying it, maintaining it?
11 A. Not exactly. The purpose of that project is to foster
sustaining agricultural practices where they can maximise
12 a minimum use of land and, therefore, maximise replanting
              of trees.
    13
         Q. Right. Do you know what the biggest single cause of loss
14 of rainforest is in Costa Rica, for example, historically?
              A. The cause is people cutting them down.
    15
         Q. Do you know what replaced the Costa Rican rainforests?
16 A. I do not know. I do not know the particulars. I know
where I was at, where I visited. That was taken over by
    17 agricultural practices.

    18 Q. Which were what?
              A. Agriculture.
    19
         Q. Not cattle ranching?
    20 A. Not where I was at.

21 Q. You are not aware that cattle ranching was the major cause
              of deforestation in Costa Rica?
22 A. That is not my area of expertise. My trip to
Costa Rica was that land that was bordering the National
23 Reserve had been cut down in order to expand the
agricultural land of the Costa Ricans, such they spread
24 out their use of coffee bean plantations, etc. So what we
were trying to do on that project was to -- and they had
25 very poor agricultural practices. So what we are trying
to do in this project is to educate and work with the
26 environmental groups I spoke about, conservation and
national. So they would have better practices.
    27
         Q. So you are unaware of the causes of, say, rainforest
28 destruction in Costa Rica? When you went out there you
              were not aware?
29 A. I am not an expert in that area.

30 Q. If I were to say to you that one of the causes was
American cattle ranching for export to America, would that
