Day 269 - 25 Jun 96 - Page 26
different polyunsaturated fatty acids with two successful,
preventive trials having been performed with omega 3 fatty
acids. Cancer researchers are now testing the epidemiology
experimentally and finding essentially that high fat diets
are stimulators and that omega 3 fatty acids are
protective. This is a somewhat simplified position as
there is less uniformity in the results than was gained in
the early studies of experimental atherosclerosis. But at
least we are now beginning to see somewhat similar
conditions that encourage or restrain cancer growth to
those which encourage heart disease. The strongest links
with dietary fat and cancer is with colon cancer."

Do you stand by the statement?
A. Yes, I do.

Q. Do you also stand by the evidence that you gave on the last
occasion you were here, or you would not wish to negate any
of that or retract any of that?
A. Not really, no.

Q. All right. There is just one other thing to cover.

MR. MORRIS: There is one document that is the Asia Pacific
Journal of Clinical Nutrition which we served a couple of
weeks ago, I think. Now, I cannot remember where it was
put but I have got a spare copy here. I think it may have
been referred to by Jane Brophy.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What we will do is if you are going to ask
one or two more questions, we will have the five minute
break there and if you can track it down for me all well
and good and for Professor Crawford. It may simply be
behind Miss Brophy's statement in the appropriate yellow
bundle or rather in the appropriate blue bundle. I think
it is the very last one in the pale blue one.

MR. MORRIS: Right. Thank you.

(Short Adjournment)

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is that where it was?

MR. MORRIS: Mrs. Brinley-Codd apparently has it with her. I
think it was where you said it was.

Professor Crawford, do you have a copy with you of the Asia
Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition article?
A. Yes, I do.

Q. Does everybody have that?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: That is good. We have not talked to the witness
about this at all. Do you have any comments on this
report? Do you agree with it? Is there any particular
section of significance, etc.?
A. I think probably really table 5 on page 267.
