Day 298 - 11 Nov 96 - Page 09
Dr. Barnard said, "Without question, I think all science
would agree that there is an association, a link if you
will, between fat as well as other components of the diet,
a diet high in fat, high in sugar, high in sat, low in
fibre, there is link, an association, with cancer of the
breast and colon, I guess we would all agree on that,"
Mr. Rampton said, "We would all agree."

MR. MORRIS: That was line 25.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: On the same page of Professor Campbell, page 33,
day 256, that the age of menopause was diet related, he
said from line 46: "These high fat low fibre diets tend to
lengthen the total reproductive period causing an earlier
age of onset of menarche and delaying the menopause", and
that was very definitely related to diet, and both those
things were related to increased risk of breast cancer.

I will not refer specifically to any of what was said here,
but on page 42 of Professor Campbell's evidence he gives a
kind of useful picture about whether or not it is the diet
as a whole or individual components, and he basically sums
it up as that the balance lies between -- well, that you
should aim for a diet based on plant products.

Can I just bring this up now, while I think of it? Last
week, when we were discussing whether or not plant based
foods fill you up, and you referred to vegetables and they
did not really fill you up, or something, I would just like
to obviously remind you that it is not just about
vegetables. Like, there are grains and so on, which
obviously are considered very filling foods and, as they
are carbohydrate, are supposed to make up a significant
part of the diet.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: With reference again to the China study and the
point about age at menarche, and so on, it is said on page
43, line 9 that Chinese women, when compared with British
women, for example, exhibited later age at menarche,
earlier age at menopause, greater parity, earlier age at
first birth and lower circulating concentrations of
oestrogen, all of which favoured a reduction in breast
cancer.

On page 58... Well, maybe that does not matter so much.
(Pause) Well, perhaps if you just read page 58, where it
actually starts over on page 57, the relevant part, about
the role of fat not just being the fat in itself but the
effect that that has on the diet as a whole.

On page 69 -- I will not go through this -- Mr. Rampton was
cross-examining Professor Campbell about the grey book
again and the view that was expressed in there about the
evidence not being sufficiently strong to determine causal,
and Professor Campbell just made the point that committees
tended to take the, sort of, least common denominator, or a
