  Q. On page -- sorry, I thought I had a note of where that
       was. Page 24.

  MR. RAMPTON: 24, section 2.

MS. STEEL: Why did you have that problem?
       A. Sorry, where is it?

  Q. It is second down: "Adequate crew size. Store still
suffers from greater than 35 hours by too many crew."
       A. Why did I have that problem?

  Q. Yes.
       A. It would not have been a major problem, but possibly
because I had too many crew working greater than 35 hours.

  Q. Was it because you did not have enough staff to have them
       working less hours than that?
       A. Maybe that I just had staff whose agreed availability
was more than that on occasions.

  Q. Or was it because you had to keep getting people to stay
extra hours to do cleaning up in advance of a visit or an
       audit?
       A. No, that is not the case.

  Q. That was going on at the Colchester store while you were
Manager, was it not, as a regular occurrence?
       A. Not regular, no, or not to any great extent.

  Q. What about page 34, which is a performance review on you in
September 1985? Section 3. This is not just about
cleaning. "I see systems and charts, but get the impression
their upkeep depends more on coming audits raps and full
fields than ongoing drive"; and then the following page,
page 35, which is actually solely about
cleanliness: "Cleanliness has been a subject discussed many
times about Colchester. On its day Colchester can be one
of the beautiful stores around, but this often takes
preparation by many people. On a day-to-day basis,
cleanliness is often very poor with even the most basic
       projects and areas being missed."

Then, in the following paragraph: "The amount of work
required to get the grade on your full field was enormous
which raised the question: what was the grade before the
       blitz clean up?"

This was a problem for you, and it is a common problem for
all store Managers, is it not?
       A. No, it is certainly not.

  Q. That they have to do blitzes in order to get required
       grades on their audits?
       A. No, that is not correct.

  Q. The reason why they have to do blitzes, why they cannot
consistently keep the stores clean, is because it costs
money to pay the crew to work the extra hours to keep the
