MR. MORRIS: A lot of that is going to be basically people
working Saturdays. They are going to come in once a week,
especially, obviously, people that are at school or college
or something, under 18s, may be; they are going to come in
for a Saturday, do a substantial number of hours and that
is it for the week, is that a fair picture which might
       explain this?
       A. Yes, it might be -- it certainly would be part-timers,
yes, I would agree, it is people working. So it could be
two evenings but it could be a Saturday, it could be a
Sunday, it could be a mixture of that.

  Q. But Saturday is the big day in terms of calling lots of
people in who may only want to do one shift a work?
       A. Saturday is a busy day. You say "calling people in",
that is when people may well be available for Saturdays,
yes, because that is when it is busy, yes.

  Q. Yes, but that ----
       A. I thought I had already answered that, so ......

  Q. So does that tally with your experience and your personnel
duties, that a substantial percentage of McDonald's
employees may just be doing one shift once a week on a
       Saturday?
       A. I would describe what I would call quite usual as being
a number of people working one or two shifts part-time at
some point during the week; many of them would be on a
Saturday because Saturday is a busy day, but, no, I would
not say they all worked just on Saturday. No, I would
       dispute that, no.

  Q. Not all but a substantial?
       A. I have described how I would put it. That is how
       I would describe it.

  Q. Have you ever done scheduling? Have you ever scheduled
       people for shifts?
       A. Yes, yes, when I was Assistant Manager.

  Q. If you get a no show, people do not turn up for a shift,
then do you replace that person?
       A. What do you mean by "replace"?

  Q. Say you schedule 20 people -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If someone does not turn up, do you ring
around to get someone else to come in ---
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- or do you get by without that person?
       A. You do normally ring around and try to and, obviously,
if you cannot get anyone, then you have to make do.

MR. MORRIS: Especially if it is a busy time you would need your
       full complement?
       A. Yes.
