Day 020 - 28 Jul 94 - Page 45

1 Q. Would a cow -- I do not know the answer to this question
-- that observes another cow being prodded with a goad,
2 would the first cow be aware of that?
              A. I am not sure that it would recognise what electrical
3 current means to another animal, no.

4 Q. You do not know whether it would suffer distress?
              A. It depends, to some extent it depends upon how upon
5 how the action is made, whether it is a threatening
action, it recognises it is as a threatening action.
     6
         Q. Does a cow when it is prodded with a goad sometimes cry
     7 out?
              A. I have known for bellowing to occur when goads are
8 applied in an abattoir situation, yes.

9 Q. So, if another cow hears another cow bellowing out, would
that cause the first cow distress?
10 A. In all likelihood, the cow hearing it would interpret
that as an alarming call, yes.
    11
         Q. Are cows sensitive to noise in general?
    12 A. Yes.

    13 Q. Clanging, bashing?
              A. Yes.
    14
         Q. That causes them distress?
15 A. It depends on the noise.

16 Q. Right. The more noise, the more distress?
              A. Yes, the frequency of the noise might be important
17 too, that is in kiloherz frequency; I do not mean the
repetition rate, I mean wave length.
    18
         Q. Just to move on to McKey's -- sorry, before we move on to
19 McKey's, just hold on one second -- just something I do
not know the answer to: When cows are bought at market do
20 they have official documents that go with them?
              A. Not that I am aware of.
    21
         Q. When McKey's (sic) get their cows -----
    22
MR. RAMPTON: I do not think Mr. Morris means McKey's.
    23
MR. MORRIS: Sorry, the abattoirs -- I am sorry about that.
    24
MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is what you mean "the abattoirs"?
    25
MR. MORRIS: Yes. When they get their cows it is not possible
26 to trace where they came from, is it, or would they
normally know where a cow came from, which farm?
27 A. No, they would not.

28 Q. In your statement you said not all the beef slaughter
houses supply McKey's are located in the United Kingdom.
29 Could you just say where the other ones are, as far as you
              know?
30 A. I was told by the representative from McKey's that at
the time of my visit there were some carcasses being
