MS. STEEL (To the witness): You have mentioned about
Mr. Preston, McDonald's President, visiting the Marble Arch
       store, you said, quite frequently?
       A. Yes.

  Q. One of the reasons was to boost morale; is that right?
       A. No, he lived close by, so one of the reasons -- perhaps
the reason might be because he lived fairly close. That is
what he possibly did when he came in the restaurant, is it
       not?

  Q. You went on to say that both management and crew were
pleased by his interest and encouragement. How do you know
that the crew were pleased by the interest and
       encouragement?
       A. Because Paul would make comments, speak to them, they
would speak to me about him coming in.

  Q. Did Mr. Magill ever say anything to you about Mr. Preston's
       visits at the time?
       A. Not that I can recall, no.

  Q. He did not. Was that the case with most of the crew
members, they did not say anything?
       A. The majority would not possibly see him ---

  Q. Right.
       A. -- if he often came in on the mornings.

  Q. But of those who did see him, is it fair to say that the
majority did not say anything about his visit?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Right. You said that you were made Store Manager of the
Year for 1986 and that was in 1987 you got that award.
What was that for? I mean, what was particularly good
about what you had done in the way you had run the store to
get you to win the Store Manager of the Year award?
       A. I suppose that should be taken up with McDonald's as to
what they give the Store Manager of the Year award for --
lots and lots of things, sales, perhaps budgets, perhaps
lower staff turnover, perhaps profitability, perhaps
management development, perhaps good training grades,
perhaps good personnel grades, perhaps -----

  Q. So they did not actually say to you at the time what it was
for; they just said: "You are Store Manager of the Year"
and you are now supposing it was for those things, because
you keep saying "perhaps", so it sounds as though you do
not actually know what it was for; they did not say at the
       time?
       A. They probably made in those days six or eight people
Store Manager of the Year, I think, for regions. They
might have been TV regions or it might have been areas of
       the country.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You do not get a citation explaining
specifically why it is you get the award?
       A. No, lots of things are taken into consideration, not
