Day 161 - 24 Jul 95 - Page 09

       A. About 3,000, all in all.

MR. RAMPTON: I want to ask you, Miss Anteneh, about some of
       Miss Tobin's specific allegations.

My Lord, here I have a problem, in that at least half of
Miss Tobin's allegations appear to be hearsay. I will, if
I may, nonetheless, ask Miss Anteneh, because we believe it
to be the case that the Defendants would be entitled to ask
her about particular topics, even though the source for
       them is hearsay.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Whatever the source, if it is an allegation
which, by one route or another, is made, then it seems to
me you are entitled to ask about it, as the Defendants
       would be in cross-examination.

MR. RAMPTON: Yes. I am grateful to your Lordship.

(To the witness) Miss Anteneh, I take these allegations in
the order in which they appear in Miss Tobin's statement,
which is the order in which you have dealt with them in
       your written statement.

Her first allegation is that at the Strand store the
lettuce was in poor condition, and -- and this is what
I want you to deal with -- that a whole bag of rotting
lettuce was used up making Big Macs. Do you remember that
       allegation?
       A. Yes, I do.

  Q. What was the size of a bag of lettuce in those days?
       A. Two kilo.

  Q. Two kilogrammes?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. How many Big Macs would you get out of a two kilogramme bag
       of lettuce?
       A. Between 50 to 60 Big Macs.

  Q. Between 50 and 60 Big Macs. A Big Mac is in five -----

MR. MORRIS: Sorry, was that 50 to 60, or 250 to 260?

  THE WITNESS: 50 to 60.

MR. RAMPTON: Between 50 and 60. A Big Mac -- you correct me if
I am wrong -- is in five layers, is it not: bread, meat and
lettuce, bread, meat and lettuce, bread?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. Is the lettuce in a Big Mac visible to the customer?
       A. It is.

  Q. Do you remember whether or not you have ever had any
complaints about rotting lettuce in Big Macs from the
       customers at the Strand?
       A. Yes, I would remember.
