Day 175 - 18 Oct 95 - Page 42
mind, because this may crop up in the future with regard to
one witness or another on one side or the other (although
at the moment it looks more likely that it will crop up
with the Defendants' witnesses in relation to employment),
but no single witness is the be and end all of the case.
They may turn out to be an important part of the jigsaw
puzzle -- it is too early to tell -- but we have all got to
remember that in deciding whether adjournments are
required, recalls are required, or anything of that kind.

What I will say at the moment, if you want to embark on
your cross-examination tonight, for whatever reason, then
we will go on until 20 past four at the latest. But I
would then like to carry on with Mr. Whittle in the morning
with every intention of finishing him tomorrow.

MR. RAMPTON: I am grateful to your Lordship.

Cross-examined by MR. RAMPTON

MR. RAMPTON: Mr. Whittle, I think you told us you are now 31
years old; is that right?
A. That is right.

Q. Does that mean when you left McDonald's in 1986 you were 22

Q. Never mind. 21 or 22 it must be, must it not? It is nine

A. My birthday is in October, so I am just 31.

A. That is right.

Q. How long were you in the training squad?

when I became full-time. I cannot remember.

Q. When you were a part-timer?
A. Possibly; I cannot remember.

Q. People in the training squad get paid a bit more than
ordinary, if I may call them that, ordinary crew, do they
not?
A. They may do.

Q. Did you?
A. I did not know what everyone else earned, so....

Q. You did not?
A. No, we were not allowed to know what everyone else
earned.

Q. Did you not ask them? I am sure you would have asked them
