Day 085 - 08 Feb 95 - Page 13
maintenance that is followed that covers those areas. But
I think it would be fair to say as a result of this we
would have looked at that, and there certainly have been a
number of revisions and improvements to make it easier to
conduct and certain areas prioritised on that.

I said it a number of times yesterday, but this is Jill
Barnes' great area of expertise and she was in her
position, I believe, when this report was published. So,
I think you may be able to get some much more accurate
responses on this, rather than my attempts to relate what
I was doing in Anglia at this point in time.

MR. MORRIS: If we go to 4.9, do you want to read that?
A. Yes. Yes, I have read that.

Q. That is fairly critical, is it not? Is that a fair picture
there?
A. I would say it is by no means typical of all McDonald's
restaurants. Unfortunately, while I would like all of them
to be perfect and to say that we were 100 per cent,
unfortunately, that is not the case. Some restaurants will
not be 100 per cent and one of those restaurants looks as
though it was visited there, so it is a cause for concern
but I think that is all it is.

Q. The thing about burns: "Interviews confirm that burns were
very common but only entered if considered severe by a
manager". That is something that was brought up yesterday,
I think, by Mr. Rampton about burns not appearing in the
accident statistics. Is that something that you recognise
is a problem with the present monitoring systems?
A. My understanding of the present monitoring systems is
that burns are entered in the accident book.

Q. But burns are a concern, are they not, of McDonald's?
A. All accidents of employees are a concern.

Q. But specifically burns; it is an environment that involves
hot fat, quick movement. It would be fair to say that
burns are common?
A. I would not say they are common. They occur in the
restaurants, yes, but as regards concern, I am more
concerned about serious accidents than lesser accidents.

Q. But burns can scar, can they not?
A. If they are severe.

Q. Even small?
A. Yes.

Q. Even if you are not hospitalised or off work for three
days?
A. Depending on the severity, yes, they can.

Q. They can scar someone for life?
A. It would have to be a serious burn to scar someone for
life.

Q. Since this report was produced -- I know you have not seen
