1 booklet because the whole booklet is what surrounds it in
              the first place.
     2
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you help me with the point you are
3 trying to make with Mr. Preston at the moment?

4 MISS STEEL: I will just carry on and if you do not get the
picture in a minute ..... (To the witness): So you
5 accept that there is a considerable amount of evidence to
suggest that many of the diseases, such as cancer, are
     6 related to diet?
              A. I accept that people should balance their diet. If
7 they want to be in the best possible health, you eat some
red meat, you eat some white meat, salad, some vegetables,
8 same grain, you take sleep and you take some exercise.

9 Q. Can you just answer the question.
              A. No, I do not accept it.
    10
         Q. You do not?
11 A. Not as a single statement; it is part of a lifestyle.

12 Q. But you would publish that statement again?
              A. Not individually. I would publish it as part of a
13 pamphlet like this, pointing out once again: Lifestyle,
balance, McDonald's can play a part in a balanced
14 lifestyle. We have never purported to say we provide
              anything and everything you need to survive on this earth;
15 frankly, we have said the other.

16 Q. I am not talking at the moment about what McDonald's does
and does not do. I am just asking whether you are
17 accepting that there is a considerable amount of evidence
linking cancer with the typical western diet, leaving
18 aside the question of McDonald's food?
              A. There is opinion about it, for sure; whether I happen
19 to believe it or not is your question, I think, and I am
not sure I do believe it.
    20
         Q. You are not sure?
21 A. Well, I look at the television many mornings getting
totally conflicting statements from the day before -
22 butter is good for you, polyunsaturates are not; the next
day I get the absolute opposite view.
    23
         Q. You said you would be willing to publish this pamphlet
    24 again?
              A. In its entirety.
    25
         Q. Yes. I believe you have also said you would not want to
26 publish anything that was inaccurate?
              A. I would want to be as accurate as I possibly could,
27 certainly. I would have a third party, as we have done in
the past, verify that what is in there numerically is
    28 accurate - absolutely.

29 Q. So you are accepting that that is accurate?
              A. I think it was as accurate as it could be at the time
    30 12 years ago, 11 years ago.
