Day 014 - 20 Jul 94 - Page 34
1 mellitus. Again I do not read the section, only the
conclusion at 3.7.4 on page 55: "Conclusions: The Panel
2 concluded that there is no evidence for a direct effect of
dietary fat on the development of either insulin-dependent
3 or non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. The Panel
endorsed recent dietary recommendations that in diabetes
4 fat should provide about 30-35 per cent of energy, with no
more than about one third of that from saturated fatty
5 acids". So we are getting back to our 33 per cent, 10 or
11 per cent?
6 A. That is right.
7 Q. In 3.8 do they give an overall DRV for fat?
A. Yes, that is right.
8
Q. Having considered the range of possible conditions to
9 which it might be related ---
A. Yes.
10
Q. -- they come to this: "Saturated fatty acids should
11 provide an average for the population of 10 per cent of
total dietary energy." Then there are a number of other
12 paragraphs. Go to the last of the recommendations, (vi):
"Total fatty acid intake should therefore average 30 per
13 cent, and total fat intake ie including glycerol 33 per
cent, of total dietary energy including alcohol or 35 per
14 cent of energy derived from food".
15 Can one conclude from that, Professor Wheelock, that for a
well brought up child of, say, nine years old who does not
16 drink alcohol (or certainly should not) one would take the
higher figure, 35 per cent?
17 A. That is right, because there is energy in alcohol but
there is no fat.
18
Q. Please turn to -- I am going to come back to what is
19 called "dietary fibre" later on -- I would like to have a
passing glance at sugars on page 72, which is chapter 5.
20 Only the conclusions, starting at 72 but I am going
directly to 73 at paragraph 5.5: "Conclusions. The panel
21 agreed with following conclusions of the COMA panel on
dietary sugars." COMA is an acronym for what?
22 A. This is the Committee on Medical Aspect of Food
Policy.
23
Q. The Committee on Medical Aspect of Food Policy?
24 A. It is the same organisation as produced this report.
25 Q. So, it is agreeing with itself?
A. Yes, but it is a panel which reported a year or two
26 earlier.
27 Q. Tell me something about the way these people proceed-
these authorities, if may call them that- if, after a two
28 year period, the people who sat on these panels had seen
reason to review or revise COMA's conclusions, would they
29 have done so, do you suppose?
A. I would imagine that they would make representations
30 to the Secretariat.
