Day 095 - 02 Mar 95 - Page 47

       the chickens being maltreated, yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Bruised meat, does that go to things like cat food and
       stuff like that?
       A. It could go there, yes.

  Q. So it is not just chucked away in a bin or something like
       that?
       A. What do you mean?

  Q. It is meat that does not come up to your standards for
       whatever reason.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Presumably it can be put to some use, but it
does not bring the same price as proper meat?
       A. Oh, yes absolutely.

MR. MORRIS: That is all on your statement. You can close
that. Thank you. Can you give us the reasons, again, why
in Costa Rica Coope Montecillos was terminated as a
       supplier?
       A. It has not been terminated. It is still our supplier.
What I am not comfortable with is in the last few years
they have made some -- it is a co-op and they have made
some changes in management, and it takes me and our people
time get familiar with them, time to discuss issues, tell
them about how we do business. That is the main reason.
We happen to find and develop a supplier that has, in our
opinion, an outstanding attitude and that we can rely on.
As long as they keep changing management I have no
assurance that tomorrow they have a new management that
decides not to supply us because we demand too much.
I have a concern of assured supply. For that reason we are
phasing out Coope Montecillos. They are still our
supplier, but they supply less to us today than in the
       past.

  Q. So is the problem with their management attitude or just
purely the one that the personnel are changing?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You said it was because they changed three
times in a year or something to that effect?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I had been left with the impression that you cut them out
altogether or were in the process of cutting them out
       altogether?
       A. In a few months they will be totally independent. We
       will not buy from them.

MR. RAMPTON: I gave your Lordship the impression that they had
already gone. I was obviously mistaken about that.

MR. MORRIS: We are nearly finished.

MS. STEEL: Have you got the Animal Welfare presentation to
       McDonald's staff?
       A. Yes.
