Day 113 - 03 Apr 95 - Page 64

  Q. Is there any pain associated with tail docking apart from
the fact it deprives them of a vital organ?
       A. Yes, not much, I would say, because it is done at a
young age, but the thing is again if you cut something like
that where there is a blood flow, you have always got the
danger in those conditions that it will get infected. Then
you will have to inject something to deal with the
       infection.

You also have to remember with pigs that when they are
mixed they are always very lively and they jostle about.
They may bite one another. You then will get injuries
which may turn into abscesses. When you look at pigs in
the slaughterhouse it is very important to look at the
conditions of the skin to see if they are bruised and if
       they have got cuts.

  Q. Can I ask if we could finish early today?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. What is your best prognosis now?
I would rather we finish now than that you found yourself
in difficulty and were less productive than you might be.
(To the witness): Would you like to go and sit down,
       Dr. Long?

                       (The witness withdrew)

MR. MORRIS: There is not an enormous amount left on pigs, but
we want to look at the international situation briefly, and
some general comments on what McDonald's witnesses have
said on cattle and pigs so we think probably something
around about two hours. We should be finished by
       lunch-time tomorrow.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you think we will finish Dr. Long
       tomorrow, Mr. Rampton?

MR. RAMPTON: Yes, my Lord. At the moment I have only about
       four questions.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think it would be worthwhile trying to find
if Mr. Bruton can come on Wednesday; the point being this,
that if he can come on Wednesday and, in fact, there are no
interlocutory matters which you wish to deal with, you will
then get a day or two added to your break. If you can deal
with the matters we were talking last week, well and good,
but really I think the ball is in your court so far as that
is concerned because your application for an amendment
        -----

MR. MORRIS: Yes, I am not sure if we will be prepared.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you are not prepared, then you best leave
it. But, remember, while you are not making the
application you have not got the amendment.

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So it is in your own interests to do it as
       soon as possible.
