Day 006 - 05 Jul 94 - Page 53
1 paragraph says: "As well as McDonald's receiving
recognition for caring about people in the community, we
2 received a significant amount of advertising in a
newspaper that goes into 517,503 homes"?
3 A. Yes.
4 Q. You are getting a lot of publicity for free, are you not?
A. Yes, I think -- I think that is great.
5
Q. It is significant, is it not, that you see fit to mention
6 all this free publicity and add on sales; you obviously
consider it a very important part of the reasons for your
7 charitable activity?
A. Surely, it is part of the whole package. It is not
8 the exclusive reason, but it is part of it.
9 Q. Just one final point -- this is not quite on the same
subject but it is a helpful document, helpful page in this
10 document, on page 100?
A. Yes.
11
Q. "McDonald's working towards a tidy Britain"?
12 A. Yes.
13 Q. I will just read the first paragraph: "It is strange that
when one questions the public about their impression of
14 McDonald's, the cleanliness of our restaurants is
renowned, yet we are attacked by the same public on the
15 basis of our environment/index.html">litter in the streets. As long as littering
our streets is prevalent in the UK, McDonald's stand to be
16 attacked as a major contributor to this social disease".
17 A. Yes.
18 Q. "When one considers that McDonalds each day is serving food
and drink to approximately three-quarters of a million
19 people in the UK, it does not take a genius to conclude
that our packaging will be prevalent on the streets whilst
20 littering continues"?
A. Yes, it goes on to say -----
21
Q. Do you agree with that statement?
22 A. I agree with what it says, but again do not take it
out of context, take the next paragraph.
23
Q. Yes. I see that you are seeking to shift the blame.
24
MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, may we have the next paragraph.
25
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, read the paragraph you want to draw my
26 attention to?
A. "However, it is unfair to blame McDonald's for a
27 problem they can do little to control, just as it is
unfair to blame car manufacturers for road traffic
28 accidents. McDonald's trades in over 50 countries
throughout the world and in some of the most beautiful
29 cities in the world and when you walk the streets of New
York, Paris or Rome, you do not see McDonald's packaging
30 littered about."
