Day 263 - 14 Jun 96 - Page 59
instructions were you given?
A. You are talking about the meeting in April 1990, are
you?

Q. What was the first you knew about this inquiry into
London Greenpeace and the anti-McDonald's campaign?
A. Mr. Hartley, the managing director of Kings, instructed
me prior to 26th April, 1990, to go to a meeting, a public
meeting of London Greenpeace at Endsleigh Street to report
on what was said, to identify those who were present and to
collect leaflets that might be around and report back.
Those were my instructions.

Q. Right. Were you told particular people to look out for?
A. I was shown half a dozen or so photographs, I recall.

Q. Do you recollect who those photographs were of?
A. Certainly Mr. David Morris. I have a feeling I looked
at one of you, Gravett, Paul Gravett. Those are the names
that I can recollect.

Q. Were you told to look out for particular leaflets,
anti-McDonald's leaflets?
A. No, there was no mention of McDonald's in my
instructions at all.

Q. But you knew the agency was involved in that investigation?
A. No, I did not actually. I was, as I say, a freelance
investigator. I turned up from time to time to carry out
assignments for Mr. Hartley. I was unaware of any
organisation being a target. I was just told to attend a
public meeting.

Q. You said that when you were looking at the photographs you
said that you had seen photographs of Paul Gravett before.
What was the purpose of seeing photographs of Paul Gravett
on previous occasions?
A. I think prior to going to this meeting I was shown a
number of photographs, maybe half a dozen or so, but
I cannot -- I cannot recall definitely who or specifically
who those photographs were of. I feel that they were of
yourself, Mr. Morris and maybe Paul Gravett, and I was
certainly shown others but I cannot recall who they were.

Q. You were given descriptions of people?
A. Yes.

Q. And told to look out for them in particular?
A. Yes.

Q. Was that because they were considered to be core people in
the group?
A. I suppose so. They were people likely to be present
there, as I understood it.

Q. They were people who you were told there was specific
interest in?
A. I really cannot remember. I mean, I was told who might
be there. I do not think I was -- I do not think
Mr. Hartley went into any more detail about those
