Day 298 - 11 Nov 96 - Page 35

recommended by the government she is referring to COMA 41.

MS. STEEL: She probably wasn't, because I think that is a
       later report.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: If you can find where it is referred to,
I would be grateful if you could give it to me in due
course. It may be important, it may not

MR. RAMPTON: Does your Lordship have 46 or 41 there?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have 41.

MR. RAMPTON: The reference is 46.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let me just make a note. Pause a moment,
       please. (Pause)

MR. RAMPTON: I just give the relevant ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Please, I am writing the reference down.

  MR. RAMPTON: Sorry. (Pause)

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What was the reference you were going to give
       me?

MR. RAMPTON: COMA 46, my Lord, which is later, and there are
three. R.2.9 on page 2R. That is the recommendation.
       R.2.9, page 2 of COMA 46. (Pause)

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So that would be about 2,300?

MR. RAMPTON: It actually works out at 2,358 grams sodium per
day. My Lord, the other references are S.2.9 on page 12,
and for a fuller account, paragraph 6.6.10 on page 138.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Well, if you think there is a
recommendation somewhere which she may have had in mind
which is not in one of the grey books you had better, if
you can, give it to me at some stage.

MS. STEEL: I am hundred percent certain that there is and also
that the recommendations in the grey books... I remember
that there was some argument about this before, that the
way it is expressed is not very coherent. Because they
certainly are not recommending that this is the minimum
       that you need.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Oh, no. What they are saying is that 1600
will be enough for 97 percent of the population, so
normally that would be enough. In 46, they suggest -----

MS. STEEL: It is not that they need that much, the population
do not need that amount of salt every day.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, the point is ----- do not get cross.
I am trying to get you to help me by giving me the
reference. At the moment the only reference I have got is
eventually in 46 which advises a reduction from the average
