Day 096 - 03 Mar 95 - Page 56

       break.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can so you look at it yourself?

  MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: To decide whether to use it at all?

  MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: How long in re-examination do you think --
let me ask Ms. Steel one more thing. Supposing you did
want to ask some questions on it, how long would the rest
       of your cross-examination be?

MS. STEEL: Not very long. I could shortcut it by showing it
anyway. It may turn out to be quicker I suppose.

MR. MORRIS: If we do not want to ask any questions we will not
       ask any questions.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you want to do that? Is there any
       objection to that?

MR. RAMPTON: No, I have no idea what video it is. I suppose it
is one that has been disclosed. I do not know. Could we
       have the name of it?

  MS. STEEL: Pandora's Lunch Box.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I suggest you show it through and if you come
to a part where, on reflection, you would like to ask
Mr. Bowes a question then ask him. If we get through it
and you decide you do not want to ask him any questions,
you have got through and you have not asked him any
questions, I am not going to hold it against you. It will
avoid you watching through again yourself and then deciding
you want to show it anyway.

  MS. STEEL: Thank you.

(The witness left the witness box).

MR. MORRIS: Could I just say while that is being set up, that
the vet inspector you said would not be called out in 99.9
per cent of cases because the meat inspectors would do that
rather than the veterinarian. That is what I meant, the
actual vet, trained vet, would not come out except for very
rare instances when a carcass is being checked?
       A. A vet is on site all the time that we are processing
and he is responsible for everything that takes place on
       that plant.

  Q. Yes, but ----
       A. He will be notified of any condemnation that takes
       place. He will see it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: But I think the vet does not actually look at
       the carcass himself?
       A. No, sir.
