Day 277 - 10 Jul 96 - Page 57
example, McDonald's when we have asked them whether or not
they have got documents it is, "No, we haven't", and then
when you turn up, "We do not mean quite that, yes, we have
actually got something".

MR. RAMPTON: What has McDonald's and their lawyers got to do
with what is quite plainly, Miss Steel, a totally dishonest
answer?
A. It is not a totally dishonest answer, it was an answer
that I was advised to give because I had never been to a
meeting at 5 Endsleigh Street.

Q. Who gave you that advice?
A. I do not know. We had about -- I don't know, there was
a few people who we were getting legal advice from time to
time depending on who was available and, you know--

Q. Had you by this time lost contact with Burgess(?) the
solicitors?
A. Yes.

Q. And had Mr. Keir Starmer of counsel?
A. We had not lost contact with him, but he quite often
wasn't available when we needed legal advice.

Q. When did Mr. Dan Mills come on the scene?
A. I think shortly before the trial started.

Q. Yes. He has some kind of legal qualification does he not?
A. Yes, he is a solicitor.

Q. So who were the lawyers in this interim desert in 1993,
March 1993?
A. We have had to be honest, we have had so many different
lawyers offering to give us help on various different
occasions that I really could not say who specifically this
was 3 years ago. No, a lot of the people who have helped
us over the course of time we have seen them once about one
specific thing they happen to be available when we had a
particular question to ask. And then, you know, we have
not seen them again. We have tried to make contact with
them and the next time they are not available then we have
to go to somebody else.

Q. Please turn over the page to 174. The answer, it is the
same answer at the top of the page, interrogatories 34?
A. Yes, that is right. I mean. Another thing I should
say, it would not have actually made any difference if it
had said 6 Endsleigh street because I would not have
remembered, so the answer would have just been "I can't
remember" anyway.

Q. Yes. Exactly. The answer would have been "I can't
remember", not "no"?
A. No, but the point is it does not make any difference.
That is what we were advised to put because it said 5
Endsleigh Street.

Q. You are not telling the truth are you?
A. I am telling the truth.
