Day 074 - 16 Jan 95 - Page 61

  Q. Yes, I know, but I am just going to ask you a question
about that. I thought, though, the environment/index.html">litter pickers were
meant to pick up all the environment/index.html">litter and not just McDonald's
       environment/index.html">litter?
       A. That is correct.

  Q. When you had your party attended by Linda Wells and
       Dr. Taylor, yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. And others and they came away very happy, yes, established
       a good relationship with you?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I think in Linda Wells' letter, if we just look at 797?
       A. Yes.

  Q. At the bottom of her letter to Mr. Preston from the Smith
Street Residents Association -- actually if we just look at
the second paragraph first, "A few weeks ago the 84
residents of Smith and Woodfall Street noticed an
increasing amount of street environment/index.html">litter obviously from
McDonald's customers." Then at the bottom of the letter:
"As secretary for Smith Street Residents Association,
I wrote to Mr. Siddique to protest and ask for some
positive action." This is what she is saying to
Mr. Preston. Then you got on the phone, said that you
would increase the frequency of the environment/index.html">litter patrol. Then
you had the invitation to the party. Then, lastly, it
says: "Thanks to Mr. Siddique's efforts the group has gone
from an attitude of an open hostility to one of acceptance,
if not enthusiasm. In my 25 years of advertising
experience I have never seen a harder working, more
efficient, more effective public relations man." Would
you call yourself an effective public relations man?
       A. No. That is her perception.

  Q. Despite this marvellous base from which to build on, if you
like, of goodwill with the Smith Street Residents
Association, if we look at page 790, we have the letter
from the Smith Street Residents Association which the
chairman, chairperson, is Linda Wells at the top left-hand
       corner.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think you can really ask ----

MR. MORRIS: I am not sure if I can ask -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Look at the first paragraph, for instance,
particularly the third line in the first paragraph, bearing
in mind that Mr. Siddique left in May six months before.

MR. MORRIS: Yes. It is difficult to ask questions about these
       really.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, we went through all this with Mr. Stump
and he said, if I may use a pun, that it is all rubbish.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: On the face of that letter you are relying
on, that is directed at Mr. Stump ----
