Day 252 - 20 May 96 - Page 55
figures you have here, I think in an earlier document you
were looking at, it points out that for heart disease to be
a major cause of death, one has to have a population with
an average life expectancy of between 50 and 60. In other
words, since heart disease is something that, on average,
certainly in this country, the average man has his first
heart attack at the age of around 70, this may surprise
people but that is the case. We are not so concerned about
that. We are concerned about people having heart attacks
at the age of 40. But if you have a population which has
an average life expectancy below that, then obviously you
are going to have a much lower incidence of heart disease
because people are not going to live long enough to develop
it. Certainly with improving affluence in the third world
this may become a problem because people may well live
longer.

Q. But even in developing countries we are talking about 19
percent of causes of death are down to the circulatory
system according to this?
A. Yes.

Q. It is still very substantial?
A. Yes.

Q. We are not talking about lightening striking somebody in
the middle of a field?
A. I think that reflects a growing middle class in these
populations.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you define "neo plasams" for me?

MR. MORRIS: "Neo plasams"?
A. It is a term for cancers.

Q. On page 37, the second full paragraph:

"There are social and economic pressures for developing
countries to change their diet towards that of affluent
societies."

Then just read that paragraph. You would accept that;
would you?
A. Yes, the consequences may be detrimental.

Q. Often?
A. Yes.

Q. And then on page 45 in the middle of the page about 7 lines
up from the end of that large paragraph, it says:
"Aggressive commercial publicity and the impact?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Page again, Mr. Morris?

MR. MORRIS: Page 435, I am sorry. In the middle of the page
starting "aggressive":

"Aggressive commercial publicity and the impact of films,
television and magazines which depict certain foods and
beverages being linked to a higher (reading to the words)
