Day 078 - 26 Jan 95 - Page 53

       A. I do not know. I cannot get inside Lord Vesty's
brain. I know he knows enough about cattle to know you
would not truck young cattle if you do not truck mature
       cattle.

  Q. You would be able to get more in a truck, so it would not
       cost as much?
       A. Come on, you would not bring cattle 2,000 kilometres.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What he says earlier, rightly or wrongly, is
that the cattle, he says where the cattle are bred, in the
second part of the second paragraph.
       A. As you say sir, they are bred.

MS. STEEL: Well, that is what he said. He has not specified an
economic reason for not shipping, for not trucking younger
cattle; he has just specified fat cattle?
       A. No. He said above that the cattle are bred on the
       natural scrub plains.

  Q. Just one other matter I wanted to ask you in this bundle of
documents. If you could turn to page 11.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is letter of 13th May 1983 from you to
Mr. Rhea and it is the second page.
       A. Yes, sir.

MS. STEEL: You talked to Paul Preston about the use of
       Brazilian beef?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What did he say to you about using Brazilian beef?
       A. I cannot remember.

  Q. You cannot remember?
       A. No, but I would have talked to Paul Preston in his
position at that time as the chief executive officer under
       Bob Rhea, keeping him informed.

  Q. But he did not say to you, "Do not under any circumstances
       use that Brazilian beef"?
       A. No, because if he had done I would not have used it.

MR. MORRIS: Just a couple of further questions. Annette Alan
was the McDonald's public relations manager at this time,
was she not, in that situation?
       A. If you say so.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You say "if you say so", were you aware
       whether that was so?
       A. No, I cannot remember, my Lord.

MR. MORRIS: We have a letter from the Friends of the Earth.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not think he is disputing she was; it is
a question whether he knows that was so.

MR. MORRIS: To save time I will not get the document out, but
there is a letter from the Friends of the Earth, Charles
Secret their rainforest co-ordinator, on 5th December 1985
