Day 130 - 26 May 95 - Page 42

MR. RAMPTON: I believe, my Lord, I misheard. They have given
the wrong references; it is "M" for mother.

MS. STEEL: I said "M" actually.

MR. RAMPTON: I thought she said "N".

MS. STEEL: The figures for 1992, where did they come from?
A. They would be off the database. Now, if that year's
one was the year I took maternity leave, so if they were
not complete for the year I was away, I suspect I would
have extrapolated them for the year end, because also this
was prepared towards the end of year of 1993, so
I extrapolated them to the end of the year 1993 as well, so
that is why it has annual equivalent numbers there.

Q. You were aware by law the stores would still have to report
any RIDDOR accidents?
A. Yes. It was still going on. I delegated it to
somebody in the office to look after the statistics for me,
but she did not keep them quite the way I would have done,
so they were not totally complete. Of course, it was
before the time I had my three regional hygiene and safety
advisers working for me.

Q. But when you got back, presumably all the RIDDOR forms were
still, you had not thrown them away?
A. No, the FT 508s would still have been all kept.

Q. Would it not have been fairly simple to go through them?
There is only supposed to be between 340 and 350 anyway.
It would not have taken that long to go through them?
A. I do not know. I cannot remember back to then. I know
they were not kept totally as I would have done, and I was
away for six months.

Q. You said, when I asked about this previously, that you do
have some statistics for that year?
A. Yes, what I am saying is I would have extrapolated the
ones I had if they had not been complete.

Q. Did you have any statistics, for example, about the number
of electric shocks that there were
A. Well, the RIDDOR statistics would be there, yes.

Q. So is there really any reason why similar sorts of
information could not have been provided for 1992?
A. Well, apart from the document that was being prepared,
which was to give management a review of the changes that
had been made since the Health and Safety Executive came in
to do the assessment, so I did not feel there was any need
to put all three years down for that. It was this sort of
information, the information broken down into place that
I had not got, because it was not kept in the same way
I kept it, but for the purposes of this document, which is
a comparative one, I felt it was perfectly adequate.

MR. MORRIS: I might dodge about a bit all over the place,
because I have a number of different matters. Mrs. Barnes,
