Day 005 - 04 Jul 94 - Page 57

     1 A. OK.

2 Q. If you go to the bottom of that page, the last paragraph,
it says: "The main blowing agent of this type, that is,
3 hydrocarbons are butane and pentane which are lighter
fractions of the hydrocarbons used for automobile fuel.
4 The emission of such hydrocarbons can cause two problems:
              Greenhouse behaviour or smog formation."
     5 A. I see it, yes.

6 Q. So would you accept that the use of pentane does cause
              those problems?
     7
MR. RAMPTON: My Lord -- it does save a lot of tedious
8 re-examination by me -- it is important once again to
avoid selective reading. It is necessary to read the
9 whole of that paragraph and the whole paragraph on the
next page to understand what Professor Duxbury is actually
    10 saying.

11 MISS STEEL: I am happy for the rest of that paragraph to be
read. Mr. Rampton can come back in cross-examination. I
12 do not think he should keep interrupting.

13 MR. JUSTICE BELL: What he was saying is it saves time if he
mentions it now. But I think if we take it all in due
14 form it may take longer. But, without wanting to stop
Miss Steel, is it any use asking you about these things?
15 It appears you were not aware of any question of, for
              instance, smog formation?
    16 A. I was not aware.

17 Q. The papers tell us we have a problem in various parts of
this country at the moment because of still air and so
18 on. You were not aware of -----
              A. I am not.
    19
         Q. Pentane contribution?
20 A. No, not to smog and not to the other element mentioned
here. "Greenhouse", I had not heard those before.
    21
MISS STEEL: Have you read Mr. Duxbury's statement?
22 A. Not recently. I am sure I have, but I do not recall
it -- certainly in the last year.
    23
         Q. But I think it was made within the last year or so. I do
24 not think you could have read it before then. Having read
that, does that concern you? Would you consider the
    25 changing, your packaging?
              A. We will work closely with the packaging industry and
26 technology to come up with the very best option available
              to us.
    27
         Q. But until some other option is available, you are going to
28 continue using a blowing agent that is harmful to the
              environment?
29 A. We are going to continue to use pentane.

    30 MISS STEEL: Thank you.
