Day 155 - 14 Jul 95 - Page 60

       A. Yes.

  Q. So in a period of a year how many times would that happen?
Would it happen once, twice, five times?
       A. I could not tell you. It could be 20, it could be 30,
it could be 60. I really -- it did happen quite a
few -- no less than 20 times at least, no less.

  Q. You said that 20 to 30 per cent of the people had
management ambitions, crew members, and they could progress
to Floor Manager. When people have management ambitions,
you said that, does that mean they were prepared to go up?
Were they just saying: "Oh, I would like to be Floor
Manager and I would not want to go any further than that",
or did you mean that they would be happy to continue -----
       A. It is very difficult to tell, because some people
wanted to go into floor management and might have been
doing a business related course in the poly or college or
whatever. Once the course had finished, some of them went
into salaried management, some of them went into other
fields and stayed part-time Floor Manager. It is very
       difficult to tell.

  Q. When you said 20 to 30 per cent, what percentage do you
       reckon of crew -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us take it in numbers. It would mean
that something like 20 to 30 of the 100 people there had
ambitions to get to Floor Manager anyway. Is that what you
       are really saying?
       A. Yes, Floor Manager.

  Q. Some of the 100 had reached Floor Manager?
       A. Yes, floor management and above.

  Q. Yes. I think what Mr. Morris is asking, of that, say, 20
to 30, how many have got an eye on salaried management as
opposed to being satisfied if they get to Floor Manager?
       A. Salaried management, I probably -- maybe, say, about
five, five people, six people, maximum.

MR. MORRIS: So would it be fair to say that when you talk about
management ambitions then, you are not talking about want
       to be salaried?
       A. Well, when we speak in management in general, for me
that means management as in salaried and floor management.
That is what my assumption is.

  Q. Right, so when you say "management ambitions", you mean
people who might want to go up to Floor Manager or above?
       A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is what he said, and that is why I asked
       the further question because ---

MR. MORRIS: They might change their mind.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: -- it is a fraction again, a quarter or one
in four or one in six actually might have had their eye on
salaried management. It is helpful to give these estimates
