Day 280 - 17 Jul 96 - Page 41

return them by the end September to court, by arrangement
through Mr. Glenn, and to let Mrs. Brinley-Codd know where
and how she can get at any volumes of the documents if she
requires them during the long vacation, then you may take
       them away.

  MR. MORRIS: That is appreciated.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Else have we got to do?

MS. STEEL: The only thing I wanted to raise is about the
schedule for next term. I do not know if anyone has got
anything before that. No one is saying anything, so I will
       carry on.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MS. STEEL: You said that term normally ended about the 21st
December. I have looked at my diary the 20th is a Friday,
so I presume that will be when we finish.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Well, I wish things were so rational. It is
not always so. I do not know when the last day of term is.
I remember we had to come back last year on a Monday
because it happened to be the 31st July and it was thought
that it would be wrong to end term on the 30th. So I make
no guess at when the last day of the Christmas term is.

  MS. STEEL: Right.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: How does that affect the scheduling anyway?

MS. STEEL: All I was going say that working backwards from that
week, if there were three weeks for Mr. Rampton to do his
closing speech, and I mean, obviously he thought like a few
days, and then obviously you said about there might be
legal matters to come up and in case of any, you know, Mr.
Rampton takes a little bit longer than expected that would
give -- if Mr. Rampton was to start on the 2nd December
that would give three weeks for all that which would mean
that we would in the way that you referred to it last week,
we would need to finish by the 29th November.

The reason I am trying to do it this way, I mean you said
something about we would have to say what date we were
going to be finishing by if we wanted to take up some of
the six weeks that you had allotted for us to do closing
speeches with continuing to write them. So that was when I
worked out the sort of, the date would be that we would
have to be finished by, giving, as in your reckoning, three
weeks for Mr. Rampton and any legal matters.

The situation at present is that I do not really know what
is going to be more useful us to in terms of whether it is
more time in Court, or more time out of Court preparing the
closing speeches. I think probably I certainly could do
with a little bit longer for preparation but I think, I
mean if we have got a date that we need to finish by, then
presumably, I do not know whether it would be okay if we
notify the Court as to when we want to start in order to
