Day 124 - 10 May 95 - Page 22
something ----
A. To be more accurate -----

Q. Normally an outside agency conducted the tests, so they did
not always?
A. I should say, I should have said "always". To my
knowledge, in all the cases that I was aware of, an outside
agency did it. As far as I know, today, lie detector tests
are still given, not in McDonald's -- it is not a part of
McDonald's system -- but they are given for certain jobs.
It is used as a security screen, and, to my knowledge, the
employer is not present when the test is given. If a
person is interviewing for a US Marshal's job or a job
requiring a high security clearance, the member of the
agency, government agency is not present when that is
given. That was also the case with us back in the 60s when
that was, when lie detector tests were being used.

Q. So the ones in the stores where you had control over, you
were never present?
A. I was never present, and that was the case for all of
my peers. I want to say it is a policy that you cannot be
present, but I could be wrong on that.

Q. You said that really they were only used where there was a
suspicion or question of possible dishonesty.
A. That was in the case of existing employees.

Q. Right.
A. But, from time to time, we would recruit individuals
that had previous experience in management for other
companies. We were interested in bringing them abroad as a
manager trainee.

Q. In McDonald's?
A. To McDonald's right. So we would have ask them to take
a lie detector test to see if there had been incidents of
dishonesty in their work history.

Q. That was only for people -----
A. Management candidates.

Q. But was it for management candidates coming up from being
crew members or -----
A. Sometimes they had to do that, yes. Some franchisees
were required -- required their swing managers to do that,
yes.

Q. Because on those occasions you would not have a suspicion
of dishonesty, would you, or you would not be thinking of
promoting them?
A. That is correct.

Q. So on those occasions what would you have been asking them
about?
A. General questions about, you know, similar questions to
the questions that would be asked of those management
recruits: "Have you ever taken any money before?" That
sort of thing. But, generally speaking, when a person
reached that point of being a swing manager and was ready
