Day 188 - 15 Nov 95 - Page 46

       your notes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. This and the succeeding page -- and this is not
       verbatim -----

  MR. MORRIS: 13?

MR. RAMPTON: 13 and 14. I think I recall you saying this
morning these were your subjective thoughts about
       McDonald's; is that right?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Did you pass these to the producer?
       A. Yes, I would have passed those to the producer at the
end of the observation period and when we were talking
about what we should actually be filming.

  Q. Would it be unfair if I characterised these notes as some
       political manifesto?
       A. I think it would be extremely unfair, actually.

  Q. All right. Then we will have to have a look at them.
       First paragraph:

"McDonald's sell hamburgers. They sell process meat
patties with sufficient fat content to enable them to cook
in their own fat. They sell them on buns with a high sugar
content which will enable the buns to caramellise or burn
under the toasters rather than be really toasted. They
sell them with sauces containing God knows how many
preservatives, Es etcetera, and with lettuce containing 18
       chemicals to preserve its crispness."

What is the matter with Es?
       A. Some Es are perfectly acceptable; other Es are put in
and may be potentially damaging to people's health.

  Q. Do you know what the E numbers represent?
       A. They represent additives.

  Q. Do you know why it is an E number?
       A. No, I do not particularly.

  Q. You do not know, then, that it is a substance which has
been approved by the European Communities Committee on the
toxicity of the use in food?
       A. Yes.

  Q. You do know?
       A. I would not have been able to give the precise
definition, but I know that they are additives which have
       been approved.

  Q. Where did you get the idea that McDonald's lettuce contains
18 chemicals to preserve its crispness?
       A. I was told that by a member of the McDonald's Company,
I think Paul Hickling, actually. We were talking about the
whole process of it. I think he told me that.
