Day 062 - 06 Dec 94 - Page 16

shells, you print a varnish on to it, so that the bun, the
food, does not stick to the carton.

  Q. Then we see that the first piece of sandwich proper is 70
per cent of post-industrial recycled -- I am only going
slowly because I am finding it difficult to read -- and 30
per cent virgin material, is that right -- can you read
       yours?
       A. Sorry, yes.

  Q. Top liner of 50 grammes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Then the inner layer is 100 per cent post-industrial
       recycled material, yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Then the bottom liner is the same as the top liner, is it
       not?
       A. Yes.

  Q. The same weight, the same proportions?
       A. Yes.

  Q. While we have that in front of us -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I had assumed, Mr. Rampton -- perhaps
I should be told if I was wrong -- that the thicker clay
coating was because that is the side which would come into
contact with the food, because under that it is more
recycled material than virgin, the next layer. I can see
that on the outside you need clay coating as well for
       printability.

MR. RAMPTON: Your Lordship can say that, of course, I cannot.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, I know. Might that be the reason why it
is not only clay coated by five times as thick?
       A. To my understanding, that is exactly the reason.

MR. RAMPTON: While we have this open in front of us, we notice
the recycled paper, wood fibre used in this particular
       product is post-industrial?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I do not know that you have exact figures in your head or
anything like that. Are you able to give his Lordship in
the broadest possible way any kind of a proportion for
McDonald's use of recycled fibre in Europe generally, any
kind of a proportion between the use of post-industrial and
       post-consumer waste?
       A. It would be a complete guess; I can mention some of the
       products which are.

  Q. That might be helpful.
       A. OK. The main product that was made of recycled paper
is napkins. They are made mainly of post-consumer recycled
waste. Another big product which is made of recycled
material are the carry-out bags. Here in the UK the
recycled part of that is mainly post-consumer recycled
