Day 135 - 15 Jun 95 - Page 09

What I suggest you do with Mr. Sutcliffe is ask him
anything which relates to what you have to put to
       Mr. Sexton in cross-examination.

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: This is advice only, and it is entirely a
matter for you, while Mr. Sutcliffe is here, when we
adjourn (which I would expect will be pretty early today),
I would take advantage of his presence to ask him anything
more you want to ask him about the case. In other words,
if he is kind enough to stay, do not let him go without
taking that opportunity while all three of you are outside
at court together. But, for the time being, leave that
until later, any generalities, and concentrate on what
further instructions, if any, you need from him to put to
       Mr. Sexton.

                         (Short Adjournment)

                 Cross-examined by the Defendants

MS. STEEL: Do you remember when in 1987 you became a Second
       Assistant Manager?
       A. Not exactly, no.

  Q. You do not remember when exactly you became a First
       Assistant Manager?
       A. I know I was Store Manager for approximately six years,
so I would have been a First Assistant a year before that,
       I imagine, so .....

  Q. You said Peter Sutcliffe was always talking about unions?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Was he talking to you about unions or are you referring to
conversations that he was having with other people that you
       overheard?
       A. A bit of both.

  Q. A bit of both? Did you have a particular interest in trade
       unions?
       A. Do I have an interest? No, not particularly.

  Q. Did you have any interest in trade unions?
       A. Not at all.

  Q. What was Mr. Sutcliffe saying to you about trade unions?
       A. I cannot actually remember specifics; it was more along
the lines of, you know, we should not be doing this and we
should not be doing that. It was that kind of thing.

  Q. In terms of working practices?
       A. Yes.

  Q. He was not happy with the working practices?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Right. Did that include pay?
       A. I cannot recall.
