       A. What I would say -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Listen to the question first?
       A. The answer is, no.

  Q. Then if you want to modify your answer, please take the
       opportunity to do so.

MR. RAMPTON: You do not think you have ever said anything like
       that?
       A. I would be glad to describe what I would say about
       that.

  Q. Please do so.
       A. By age 60 in the United States and similar statistics
apply in Western countries, about 25 per cent of men are
impotent. By that I mean they are unable to sustain an
erection. The researchers have hastened to look into what
they may regard as a public health menace and have found
that atherosclerotic blockages in the relevant arteries
are responsible for a great many cases of impotence in
men. However, there are other cases as well; medication
and diabetes contribute. So the 25 per cent figure would
be the prevalence of impotence in men at age 60, not the
number that is caused by eating meat.

  Q. If I have understand you correctly, what you might now be
saying is that atherosclerosis might make a contribution
       to impotence?
       A. The medical literature clearly does describe that in
       great detail, yes.

  Q. It is pretty obvious it is a mechanism, is it not?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Considering an erect penis depends upon blood supply, it
is pretty obvious, is it not?
       A. It is yes.

  Q. There are other causes of impotence such as, for example,
       psychological causes?
       A. There are.

  Q. Socio-psychological causes which have no connection with
       eating meat at all?
       A. Psychological factors can contribute to sexual
       functions.

  Q. Yes, indeed. Do you regard any part of this book as being
       scientifically or medically controversial?
       A. Not specifically.

  Q. You do not.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Mr. Rampton, if you are going to put parts
of this, I suggest we have our break for five minutes now.

                           (Short Adjournment)

MR. MORRIS: May we just ask, is it possible for the witness to
