Day 130 - 26 May 95 - Page 36

       A. I am not denying it, I just do not know the
circumstances of why she should be there.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I can imagine someone at a local school
said: "Can you take someone for two or three days on work
experience?" and someone has said: "Yes", whether senior
management would approve of it or not.

MR. MORRIS: This practice has not come to your attention that
young, not young children, but 15 year olds are -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Are there others?

  MR. MORRIS: Not on this.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You say this practice ------

MR. MORRIS: All right. (To the witness): You are not aware of
       this happening?
       A. No. You can see, I am a little surprised. Certainly,
when I was a Restaurant Manager, you do not hire anybody
under 16. I certainly would not have let a child, if you
like, work in the kitchen on work experience. It
seems -- I do not know the circumstances.

  Q. On page AW, the fifth one down -- I actually had not
noticed it before -- it says: "Occupation W/E" which,
       I presume, is work experience?
       A. I do not know.

  Q. So maybe it was something that was happening from time to
time at this store. If you go to AX, this is the first
one, it says: "Changing light bulb on counter and got
electric shock". I presume "FM" is Floor Manager?
       A. Yes.

  Q. "A slight burn on left forefinger". This was in 1991 ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I will add an electric shock to Mr. Rampton's
two; you counted it as a burn, obviously, Mr. Rampton?

  MR. RAMPTON: I did, yes.

MR. MORRIS: Was this before or after that -- this was before
the staff were told they should not be changing light
       bulbs?
       A. I cannot remember. Certainly in this memo from Richard
Roly and myself (which was 1991), we did spell out about
changing light bulbs and ensure isolation first.

  Q. Apparently, it is the day after that memo was sent out?
       A. Was it? Let us assume they had not received it then!

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is just typical.
       A. Again changing light bulbs is something that has been
really difficult to get over to people that ------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I am not surprised. Somewhere there is a
command not to change flourescent tubes. That I can begin
to understand just slightly more easily?
