Day 069 - 19 Dec 94 - Page 61

But, to answer the intent of your question, yes, that could
       happen.

  Q. Right, and it is something of a problem in feed lots where
       animals -----
       A. It could be something of a problem in anywhere. You
can find it in feed lots, you can find it in animals that
       are in the open.

  Q. Right, but it is a particular problem in feed lots?
       A. It is the same. I have never seen anything
in -- I have seen more problems in areas that is not a feed
lot, especially in areas that receive a lot of rain. It is
usually associated with the presence of an over abundance
of water because of rains. It could be in a feed lot; it
       could be anywhere.

  Q. Yes, if it is a combination of a high protein diet and
being very wet under foot, then it is more likely to?
       A. A high protein diet?

  Q. Yes.
       A. I have not seen anything that would support that. They
get, that is an infection. It is an inflammation of the
hoof that is caused by bacteria, bacteria that is in the
soil, and it grows in the presence of -- all it needs is
water, soil and a host, so it grows under those conditions.

  Q. Sorry, when I say "high protein" I should have said a "high
grain" diet as opposed to something with more roughage?
       A. It has nothing to do with the nutritional level of the
animal. What it does have, what it provides, that an
animal that is well-fed will have a high resistance than an
animal that is not well fed. So, that actually supports
thoroughly the opposite, but I have not seen any data to
       support that.

  Q. When animals get laminitis do they not go on restricted
       diets?
       A. Do they go on a strict diet?

  Q. Restricted diets?
       A. I do not know. I am not a vet.

  Q. You do not know about that?
       A. No, I do not know how to treat the disease other than
drying up the area and trying to contain the water that
       goes there.

  Q. It is a painful condition, is it not, laminitis, for the
       animals concerned?
       A. It depends to the extent. Most animals it is not --
they do not have any nerves.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Hold on a moment. You said you did not
recognise the word "laminitis", and what you have been
       talking about is hoof problems?
       A. Which is laminitis is one of those.

  Q. It is, is it, you know that?
