THE WITNESS: But I do accept, and it goes back ------

MR. JUSTICE BELL: When I say "pause" I mean pause. Am I to
think that there is any significance in it being classical
music rather than heavy metal, because you said "classical
       music" rather than just "music"?

MS. STEEL: I do not know.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, you mean music really, do you not?

MS. STEEL: It says Vivaldi, in particular.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, I know, but I cannot believe -- I
will need some persuading that a chicken appreciates the
       difference between Vivaldi and Mozart.

MS. STEEL: I would imagine that somebody has done a study on
       it.

MR. RAMPTON: It is all very well for Ms. Steel to imagine. If
it is part of her case, she has to do a jolly sight more
       than imagine.

MS. STEEL: I am just asking the witness.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why not just start with music?
(To the witness): Do you think they enjoy listening to
music? It is well-established that gravely, mentally
handicapped human beings can respond beneficially to music,
no doubt about that. Is there any reason why a chicken
       should not?
       A. Yes, there is big reasons. Chickens will not, going
back to what I have spoken in the past, chickens are aware
about the environment but only the environment that they
are familiar with. If you raise a chicken with any type of
music, from heavy metal to classical music, and then change
that, then they will go back. If you go back and put it
back in the situation with or without music, they go back
to the music because that is what they are familiar with.
You, as a human, when you see it from a human perspective,
one could assume that they like music, but they really like
to go back to their familiar environment. That does not
       mean that they like music.

MS. STEEL: I am not sure if I am right on this, but I have a
vague memory of Dr. Gregory saying something about animals
being calmer if they heard music at the slaughterhouse or
       something.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Dig that up later, if you like. But you are
really just asking -- you do not have to contradict
Dr. Gomez with other evidence if it exists. You are really
       finding what his view is.

MS. STEEL: Have you ever heard of music being played at a
       slaughterhouse to keep animals calmer?
       A. Heard of it?
