Day 133 - 12 Jun 95 - Page 32

       A. Yes.

  Q. That block of people is 58 per cent of the total number of
current employees; that the percentage of those who have at
this date worked continuously for between six months and 10
years is 61 per cent, and that the percentage of those who
have worked from between one year and 10 years is 44 per
       cent, those are rounded figures?
       A. Yes.

  Q. One can see if one looks at the same quarter for the
previous year those figures are 59 per cent, 64 per cent
and 47 per cent respectively. My question is this:
Bearing on the question of retention of crew and crew
satisfaction, what, if anything, did those figures tell you
       as a Human Resources person?
       A. Well, that in terms of people leaving we do have many
people who do remain with us continuously for those periods
       of time.

  Q. Does that give you a good or a bad signal as a Human
       Resources person?
       A. In general, a good one, given that we are a first
employer and given all the things that we have said about
student leavers, and I know that many people do stay with
us for long periods of time.

  Q. One of the things, Ms. Mead, which you may or may not
remember -- perhaps you never knew, I do not know -- that
the leaflet which is the subject of this libel action says
about McDonald's is that the chances of promotion for the
ordinary worker are minimal. What do you think about that?
       A. I would have thought we were a company which actually
offered chances for promotion rather more readily than many
other companies I can think of. Certainly, not just from
my own experience, but from many people whom I know and
have worked with, and take the example that we mentioned
before about video which struck me when I was watching it.

  Q. Mr. Nicholson gave us some figures for managerial staff,
salaried staff, promoted from crew earlier on and I have no
desire to repeat his evidence through you. You, however,
have produced a new document for us, a new analysis, which
is document B, my Lord, of the new bundle. This tells us,
I think, does it not, Ms. Mead, of the salaried staff in
each category what percentage have come from outside and
what percentage have come up from crew; is that right?
       A. Yes.

  Q. We see that 58 per cent of managers were originally crew,
is that right? That is the first pie chart.
       A. Yes.

  Q. That 62 per cent of first assistants were originally crew?
       A. Yes.

  Q. 44 per cent of second assistants ---
       A. Yes.

  Q. -- but I think only 35 per cent of trainees; is that right?
