Day 274 - 04 Jul 96 - Page 34

at the bottom of the page.
       A. Sorry. Yes, the next page.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The penultimate paragraph on that page.

MR. RAMPTON: Just after the penultimate paragraph, in the last
       paragraph Mrs. Tiller has written:

"Soon after, the young woman whom I recognised from her
description as Jane entered the room and sat down next to
       Helen."

Can I ask you, how well did you know Helen Steel at this
time, in the middle of 1990?
       A. I knew her fairly well. She was almost the only other
female member in the group. But I did not actually see her
that much outside the group at that time. I have got to
know her better over the previous years.

  Q. I can tell you that you were at, according to these notes,
it may have been more, but something like 30 London
Greenpeace meetings or events between November 1989 and
       September 1990?
       A. Right.

  Q. About the same number as Ms. Steel?
       A. Right.

  Q. So you would have seen her at a lot of meetings, would you
       not?
       A. Yes, once a week, yes.

  Q. Plus the one at the end of the month?
       A. Pardon?

  Q. Plus the one at the end of the month at Endsleigh Street?
       A. Yes.

MS. STEEL: I do not know whether it is plus.

MR. RAMPTON: Sorry, three Caledonian Road meetings followed by
       an Endsleigh Street meeting?
       A. Yes.

  Q. The penultimate paragraph reads as follows:

"While this was going on, at about 8.20 p.m. Helen entered
       and was greeted by name."

Then there is a description, which I need not read. Then
       the last sentence goes:

"She became involved in the discussion but was not good
with words and bluntly expressed an extremely radical
viewpoint viz the overthrow of the government and total
destruction of the present social system."

Does that ring true to you?
       A. I mean, not exactly. I mean, "not good with words", I
mean, Helen did not speak that often. She occasionally
