Day 124 - 10 May 95 - Page 52

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The second sentence.

  THE WITNESS: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: What were the issues, do you remember?
       A. Issues like the manner in which the Manager or
Assistant Manager communicated with his employees was one
instance. Another example would be the failure to maintain
equipment in a timely fashion. There were, you know,
complaints from crew people about the poor condition of
       equipment. Will those examples suffice?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You will be asked more questions.

MR. MORRIS: Are there any other examples that you can remember?
I know it is long time ago.
       A. There are other examples. I mean, during the course of
that period of time there are always opportunities that
I had to deal with, but those were, you know, two examples
of what I was talking about.

  Q. We are actually looking for something. While we are
looking for that -- a completely separate matter -- the
post customer recycling at McDonald's: To be honest,
I cannot remember what was said earlier on in the case. Is
there any post customer recycling still done at McDonald's
in the USA? In other words, asking customers to separate
their packaging out into various bins and that kind of
stuff and it being collected -- this is the waste
       packaging?
       A. That still continues in the United States, yes.

  Q. Customers are quite capable of doing that? It has a value?
You are not just doing it for show; it has a value, does
       it?
       A. We think so and many of our customers think so --
       obviously some more than others.

  Q. But, in general, does it work that customers put the things
in the right boxes or the right bins and participate to
       some kind of efficient level?
       A. It could always be improved, it could always be better,
but we are pretty pleased with the savings that the system
has been able to garner from implementing that recycling
       programme.

We have been recognised by a couple of outside agencies,
one environmental protection agency, I believe, just gave
us a commendation for the success we have had with our
recycling efforts. We have actually had some restaurants
just about built from the ground up completely with
       recycled materials.

  Q. That is another matter, though, is it not? That is buying
       materials that have been recycled.
       A. But that is part of it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What you are really being asked is whether,
by and large, customers co-operate and manage to get the
right materials in the right bins and so on or whether that
