Day 161 - 24 Jul 95 - Page 53
Q. Under "equipment" here, it says: "Freezer lights needs
fixing." I will not ask you about that. "Timer on regular
grill needs a new button and needs mending, keeps going
off." Just one question about that. There is all sorts
of, presumably, complicated timing systems and lights and
buzzers and things for cooking burgers. Is it quite often
that one of those buttons needs changing like that, or is
that something unusual?
A. This one is one off. It does happen from time to time,
but not that often.

Q. So it is not unusual, but it is not every week?
A. Yes.

Q. We could note in passing that over the page, under
"Training": "Training was dropped recently because three
training squad had left." That is the second line. Have
you ever had problems in the stores which you have worked
in where it was hard to maintain the numbers of training
squad, sufficient to sort of make sure the person coming in
was -----
A. In my experience, the training squads become the Floor
Managers, and we have to replace them; and that was my
experience -- not leaving.

Q. So, if there is a lot of promotions, that could mean that
you need to ---
A. Replace them.

Q. -- replace them; and there could be a gap in the training
system, then?
A. I would not say a gap in the training.

Q. So this Putney situation -- "training was dropped recently
because three training squad had left" -- would that show
incompetence in that store then?
A. I cannot comment on that one.

Q. The only other thing I was going to look at was the very
last question, which is: "What do you like least about
working for McDonald's?" The answer is: "The money." That
was also the response to Paul Hickling, you remember, in
the film at your store, that: "If there is one thing you
could change at the Strand at McDonald's, what would it
be", and I think it was two or three or more of the people
said, "The pay". Those are the only two rap sessions we
have seen notes of. Would that be a fairly common comment
that would appear?
A. Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What about the one above? Do you think the
last two taken together are pretty typical for what people
say they like most about working for McDonald's and what
they like least about working for McDonald's?
A. Yes, sir.

MR. MORRIS: I am just quickly checking something. We can leave
those documents. Thank you very much.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a moment. Are you where you
