here or not. Are you talking about a multi-tier flat-deck
system? I am not aware of a cage system. Say, when we are
talking, the immediate thing I think of "cages" is battery
cages, etc.

Q. You are not aware of any -- obviously they would be bigger
than battery cages, but any system using cages then used by
your suppliers?
A. I am aware of a multi-tier flat-deck system that has
been used 20, 25 years ago. I am aware that that has been
used in the past.

Q. That has not been used within the last 10 years or
something?
A. Not to my knowledge. Not to any knowledge with any of
our suppliers anyhow.

MS. STEEL: Would be appropriate to have a break now?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. .

(Short Adjournment).

MS. STEEL: I should have asked the flat-deck house system where
they are on the mesh, as you called it, they do not have
any bedding in that system, do they?
A. No, they do not, but nor do they have to walk in their
own faeces.

Q. Because it drops through the mesh?
A. Correct.

Q. You are aware of the Welfare of Pigs Regulations 1991, are
you?
A. Yes, I have a got a reasonable ----

Q. Sorry?
A. Yes, I am.

Q. What was your response to those regulations?
A. Welcome.

Q. You welcomed them?
A. Yes.

Q. How have things changed as a result of those regulations?
A. In what context do you mean, please?

Q. On the farms that supply you?
A. Well, we were actually ahead of those regulations, so
that our farmers, many of them, were already there and
beyond.

Q. All of your suppliers or just some of them?
A. I would say most of them.

Q. Has your company ever used dry sow stalls?
A. No, never.

Q. Never?
