Day 128 - 24 May 95 - Page 45

obviously, they would have to work faster in order to take
       more money?
       A. Again, it does not necessarily work that way. Often
the till people that are the best are not necessarily those
that you would see moving the quickest. They just happen
to have themselves better organised. It is that
organisation and planning how they get things done that
       seems to have best effect.

  Q. But it could be an encouragement to others who, perhaps,
are not so well organised to run around and try to get
       things done quickly?
       A. Certainly, it is my experience in the stores that the
newer crew members role model themselves on the ones that
have been there longest and the ones that are seen to be
being the best. As I say, it does not necessarily mean the
one that moves the quickest; it is the one that does the
job best which could mean just being more organised or more
skilled if you are a grill person.

  Q. It does not necessarily mean the one who moves the fastest,
       but it could do?
       A. I think we have agreed before, there certainly has been
some variation in the interpretation of what McDonald's are
looking for in terms of speed, so I am sure you are right,
on occasions it could be that.

  Q. Are Store Managers instructed to provide gloves and thick
clothing for people who are working in the refrigeration
       area?
       A. It is not a Company standard to provide it because it
depends again from store to store. In some stores the
access to the freezer and the size of the freezer make it
so easy to put the delivery away and it is done very
quickly. In other stores, because of more difficult
access, it could mean that -- or higher volumes, it could
mean that deliveries go on for a lot longer. So I know
that some Store Managers do provide usually the environment/index.html">litter
patrol jackets that we have in the stores and gloves for
       people handling the deliveries.

  Q. But that is entirely at the discretion of the store
       management?
       A. It is, if you like, a kind of local risk assessment
that needs to be done. It is going to vary from store to
store and deliveries are one of the things that we ask
managers to look at locally in terms of what they need to
       do to minimise risk.

  Q. Do you think it is hygienic to have people wearing environment/index.html">litter
       coats in the -----
       A. I meant they are of that design. They are not
necessarily the ones that they used to go out in on environment/index.html">litter
       patrol.

  Q. So if someone was using a coat that had been used for
environment/index.html">litter patrol then that would cause you some concern, would
       it?
       A. It depends what condition they were kept in.
