Day 277 - 10 Jul 96 - Page 60
we have seen from their notes, Hackney and Islington and
various different groups were writing in letters to London
Greenpeace. So obviously it was not, you know, shifting at
this time. That was something that happened a long time
before

Q. It began to be discussed, did it not, after what
Mr. Pocklington called "the fervour of the 1989 fayre".
The idea began to be floated that the 1990 anti-McDonald's
fayre, I stress the words "anti-McDonald's" for this time
in 1990, should be the last one?
A. As I said before, it is my recollection that after the
1989 fayre, when the subject was brought up about a 1990
anti-McDonald's fayre, I was opposed to it and I believe
some other people were as well. There were some people who
were enthusiastic and Moe put forward a suggestion about
getting local groups to organise anti-McDonald's fayres in
their own air area.

That suggestion was not, in fact, taken up and instead
the people who were interested decided that they would have
a general fayre, London Greenpeace fayre.

Q. In due course indeed they did, Ms. Steel, but you are not
trying to tell me, are you, that you were arguing for
McDonald's to be let off the hook that the stage in the
group's history, are you?
A. Well, you say "in due course". But in actual fact, in
the feet meeting of 25th January, Mr. Pocklington does
record that the anti-McDonald's fayre is not to be
repeated, which is before these notes of Mr. Clare.

Q. 25th January page 69, it says at the bottom of page 68 in
fairness to you:

"This year the anti-McDonald's fayre is not to be repeated,
however this year the plan is to hold a general fayre in
which all the issues in which this group are concerned,
including the McDonald's issue, will be highlighted."
A. Yes.

Q. I will read on, the provisional date was 27th October, that
is in fact when it did take place:

"It was indicated that the group's anti-McDonald's
activities were no longer at the fore, as they felt that
they had achieved more or less all they can by creating an
awareness into McDonald's activities and by the fact that
so many other groups internationally had taken up the
banner. It was agreed that they would not be totally
ignoring the issue, but that there were other projects
which needed their attention more." Is that right?
A. Mr. Morris in particular was arguing that people who
were campaigning about McDonald's, there should be less of
a focus on McDonald's and that people should move on to
other issues. As far as I was concerned, my main emphasis
in what I had been involved in had already been the IMF
campaign, ever since I got involved in the group.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, I understand you say that. But when Mr.
