Day 151 - 10 Jul 95 - Page 09
evidence to all this effect on related matters. Does that
not that lead you to any conclusions?
A. Well, if the criticism is that I do not know the ins
and outs and the daily lives of some 6,000, or however
many, hourly paid employees I must have within the region,
and I have not come across an example of somebody returning
within three years, then perhaps I need to get more nearer
to the grass roots of it. I have always said the need to
-----

Q. You said that this came up, about the returners -- never
coming across someone who had come back after three years,
you just said, previously to that, that it was far better
to have experienced people?
A. Right.

Q. Right. So, in fact, not only in your experience are people
not returning after a period of time, three years' time or
whatever, but that McDonald's would positively welcome
people coming back?
A. Sorry, in my experience, no one has returned after
a ----

Q. You said that McDonald's would positively welcome
experienced people coming to McDonald's?
A. Sure. But just before that, you said something about
I would not expect people within a year or something.
Could you repeat that back to me?

Q. No, I am talking about three years, but I am saying it came
up in the context of the Company preferring to have
experienced people?
A. No, it did not. It came up in the context of people
starting on the below rate.

Q. But just before that, you said it was far better to have
experienced people. All right. I will put it to you
again. McDonald's would like to have experienced people?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think you ought to think about where you
are going on this. You have your answer. It is now an
argument between you and the witness, rather than moving
the matter forward. We know we have had evidence that
McDonald's would prefer experienced people; therefore, if
someone came back who had worked with them before, although
their experience might be a bit rusty after three years,
presumably, Mr. Stanton, you would be pleased to see them
come back, provided they had left with a clean copybook
originally?
A. Certainly.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Mr. Stanton says, himself, he has
considerable experience, and he said he has not known of
anyone coming back after they have been away for three
years. You want to argue to me that that shows that they
must have found something better and that is not difficult
to do. I really do not think you need to pursue the
argument with Mr. Stanton. Address me on it in due
course.
