MR. JUSTICE BELL: He is L4 and 4A.

MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think I only have one statement from him.

MR. MORRIS: Yes, it is three pages, one statement.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: I will not read out extracts from his book, but
I think we have disclosed extracts of his book and referred
to them in some of the evidence. I am not sure what the
status of his book becomes. I think, effectively, we do
not need to rely on the book, do we?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. If you wish to read his statement --
I will repeat what I have said before; if you want me to
take these as read, I will do, because I have read them
anyway and made my own underlinings on them, but I do not
want to stop you reading them if you think it is necessary.

MR. MORRIS: Yes. I will read this statement. I will read the
statement:

"Douglas R. Shane of Barnard, Vermont, USA. July 24th
1993. Statement re. McDonalds v. Steel & Morris.

"I have been involved with the issues pertaining to the
development and conservation of the Earth's tropical
rainforests since 1976, with particular emphasis on the
humid tropics of Central and South America.

"Between August of 19776 and April of 1978, I conducted a
study of Latin America's tropical rainforests on behalf of
Canada's National Museum of Natural Sciences in Ottawa,
Ontario. In addition to research conducted in North
America, (Ottawa and Washington DC), 10 months were spent
in 13 Central and South American countries with areas of
tropical forests conducting interviews with government
officials, scientists and businessmen and inspecting
project sites relevant to cattle ranching, agriculture,
forestry, colonisation, hydroelectric dams and botanical
and zoological research. The project report", which is his
book name, "'A Latin American Dilemma', was issued
internationally by the United States Agency for
International Development.

"Upon my return from Latin America in December 1977,
I lived in Washington DC where I worked as a consultant on
tropical rainforest issues. In addition to consulting for
the World Wildlife Fund US, the Humane Society for the
United States, the United States Department of States, The
Nature Conservancy, The International Union for the
Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN, the
scientific branch of the World Wildlife Fund), the US
Agency for International Development, and the National
Wildlife Federation, I also began, in 1978, presenting a
slide lecture on the ecology, development and conservation
