Day 095 - 02 Mar 95 - Page 24
MR. JUSTICE BELL: You might be right at the end of the day,
Mr. Rampton, but the general level of public knowledge of
veal calves is now fairly high. We will have to see
whether any of this is directed at McDonald's or can be
directed at McDonald's in the context of the case.
I propose to let it go on and I will see what, if any,
relevance it has at the end of the day.

MS. STEEL: So that would be a considerable percentage of calves
would go to veal crates?
A. I cannot tell you about that at that time. Now, no,
that is not the case. Most of the cattle goes to
feeding -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Keep your voice up, please?
A. Right now, from what I have seen -- in fact, I was last
week I was at a dairy co-op and most of their veal
slaughter was veal.

Q. So you think things have changed since then?
A. I do not know what it was in the 80s.

Q. OK, carry on.

(The video recording continued)

Q. Is there anything unusual about what was going on there
with the branding?
A. No.

Q. That would be standard?
A. Typical.

Q. Just going back to the veal calves, you said not many go
there, but the ones that do go for veal from the dairy
industry, they would be in those kinds of conditions?
A. No.

Q. They would not?
A. From what I have seen, no. Now I must say that my
limited -- I have very limited experience with veal. It is
something I do not consider is part of our business.

(The video recording continued)

Q. Could you stop a second? What do you know that disease by?
A. I do not know.

Q. You are not aware of that?
A. No, and it is definitely not one of the major
(inaudible), absolutely not -----

Q. Do you know whether that was the case in the early 80s?
A. I do not know.

Q. You do not know?
A. No.

Q. The feed lots that were shown, that would be a typical size
of feed lot?
