Day 059 - 01 Dec 94 - Page 48
benefit for McDonald's in doing it?
A. No, there is not, but we realised that a lot of waste
can be generated in offices, especially around such
machines as photocopiers. We also realised that there was
not a need to use virgin paper for the stationery in
offices, that recycled paper is more than adequate, so we
decided to make a change.

Q. But for what reason?
A. Environmental reasons.

Q. Before this case, had you advertised the fact that you were
using recycled paper in your offices?
A. Before this case?

Q. Yes. I mean, it is now public knowledge, of course,
because this is a public court, but had you advertised to
the public that you were using recycled paper in your
offices?
A. No, not to my knowledge, anyway.

Q. Do your memos, or whatever they are, communications, office
stationery, have on them "recycled paper"?
A. By and large they do, yes -- in business cards too.

Q. Now I want to turn, if I may, briefly to some of the
differences which may exist amongst the different European
countries. I only want to use a broad brush, if you do not
mind. We looked at a list just now of all the in-store
sorts of paper products that are used in a McDonald's
restaurant?
A. Right.

Q. Are there any major differences between the practices in
this country, apart from the ones we looked at this morning
where one saw differences between clam shells and paper
wraps, are there any significant or major differences
between what you do here and what is done in other parts of
Europe?
A. Not significant, no. In a number of countries we do
use paper hot cups instead of foam hot cups, but I do not
see that as being significant. They never actually changed
from paper to foam because originally the whole market was
on paper.

Q. You may already have told us this, is the whole of Europe
now sourced directly or indirectly by Perseco?
A. For packaging?

Q. Yes.
A. Yes.

Q. I do not know whether it was this morning or yesterday,
I rather think it was yesterday, his Lordship called to
mind a distant memory of being bribed, I think it really
was, to take waste paper down on his bike when he was a
younger person than he is now to be recycled. I think
the idea was it was some years ago. Do you have any
impression in your mind of the rough date or period at
which recycling in this country became a widely available
