Day 114 - 04 Apr 95 - Page 63

about. I have not got a veterinary qualification.
I worked very closely with, particularly, doctors and also
with some vets and we shared the same language in many
ways. If you go to a hospital the whole population of
professionals are not medical doctors. Some of them are
biochemists, some are nutritionist, some are physicists,
radiologists and so on. I happen to move in that circle.

  Q. We can all (and this is not meant sarcastically)
particularly if we have had a little bit of training in the
right sort of field, we can all read and understand what
other people have written. We can understand what other
people tell us. Does that make us experts in the field
qualified to tell the court what is what, Dr. Long, do you
       think?
       A. No, it is does not. It is a question of being able to
talk critically, to criticise one's colleagues and to
accept their criticism. It is an interchange.

  Q. How is Dr. Gregory a colleague of yours?
       A. I know Dr. Gregory.

  Q. I asked you how he is a colleague. I apologise for
       interrupting.
       A. Yes, I would say he is a colleague in the sense that we
have attended conferences together, we have exchanged
information. I have other colleagues actually in his
department whom I know better. So I would say that he has
been helpful to me. When I have been wanting information,
special information, he has provided some.

  Q. You a colleague in sense that you share with him an
interest in animal welfare, is that right?
       A. Yes.

  Q.   Have you actually read the evidence of Dr. Gregory;
evidence, I am not talking about his written reports
although I hope you have read those too? Have you actually
read the transcript of the evidence which he gave in this
       court?
       A. Yes. I must say that I read it a little time ago, so
that you have to bear that in mind.

  Q. Yes.
       A. I also have read his research papers.

  Q. Have you read the evidence of Mr. Ashley Bowes, the pig
       farmer from Norfolk?
       A. I must say I skimmed through that rather; I skimmed
through it. It really did need a lot of thought, you
know. It was pretty difficult to follow. If I had to
answer questions on that in detail I think I would have to
       have another go at it.

  Q. That is really, you see, what was worrying me about all of
this. I will ask you before I come back to it. Have you
read the evidence of Mr. Tim Chambers, the Quality
Assurance Manager at Midland Meat Packers?
       A. Yes, I went through that.
