Day 134 - 13 Jun 95 - Page 72

Mr. Nicholson did not ask me that.

  Q. You were talking about rap sessions in your
evidence-in-chief. You were asked: "Do you ever get rap
sessions which are what I might call a bit stormy or
uncomfortable for the managers?" You said: "Yes. Yes,
there are times when if adverse comments are made about
things to do with your restaurant or about the managers
themselves and their management style, that obviously does
happen." Are you referring there to the manager that is
       conducting the rap session?
       A. No. I think there I was referring to if there are
criticisms made of managers in the restaurant it is
understandable that the managers in the restaurant do not
initially like to hear criticism about themselves.

  Q. So the rap session itself is not getting stormy then?
       A. Well, they get quite heated, but they are actually
quite enjoyable things to attend because usually people are
constructive, so they can be quite light-hearted as well
even though people may voice their opinions quite
strongly. I would not describe them as stormy very often.

  Q. I just wanted to ask something about the documents at
       tab 24A in volume XII.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: The spreadsheet.

MS. STEEL: Yes. You were saying about what the general
managers are. There are one grade up from a Restaurant
       Manager, is that right?
       A. Yes. What we have at the moment is that we have a
number -- well, I am not really sure what the question is
going to be, but there are two types of general managers
now in the Company and it depends what you are going to ask
me as to whether you want me to go into all that really.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why do you not tell us one sentence on each
       of them what they are?
       A. Right.

MS. STEEL: I do not mind, but I can ask a specific question if
you want. He said a general manager is someone who works
       in one restaurant?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Who has usually more experienced and is of a higher grade,
one grade up from a Restaurant Manager whose pay and
performance is linked or, sorry, bonus is linked to
performance and profitability. What are their duties?
       A. The duties of a general manager?

  Q. Yes.
       A. I think it would at this point in the day be too long
for me to try to describe it. Their responsibility is to
       run the restaurant.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Might they have a manager or more than one
       manager under them?
       A. Assistant managers they would have.
