Day 089 - 15 Feb 95 - Page 25
many will you find it necessary to dispose of in this way?
A. Well, really, the numbers are very small and probably
in the range of 200 or 300 at the most.

Q. Is that something like or just over one in 1,000?
A. Yes.

Q. The method you use is which?
A. The method we use is as laid down in the MAFF codes of
practice which is to use carbon dioxide in a sealed
chamber.

Q. Can you, please, retrieve from behind you -- more footwork,
I am afraid -- an orange volume V, Dr. Gregory's references
to rearing and slaughter? Do you have that?
A. Yes.

Q. Please turn to tab G which is MAFF's Code of
Recommendations for the Welfare of Livestock, Domestic
Fowls?
A. Yes.

Q. We see that it is originally published in 1987 and
reprinted in 1990?
A. Yes.

Q. Have you been familiar with this document or something like
it throughout your time at Sun Valley?
A. Yes, I have. This is the standard code of practice
which we use.

Q. Some of these guidelines are derived from statutory
legislation and, therefore, have the force of law; is that
right?
A. That is correct.

Q. But the majority of them have not?
A. That is correct.

Q. Do you know by what route or method these recommendations
are devised or conceived?
A. The code of recommendations, for example, the latest
one, as you said, published in 1992 came from Farm Animal
Welfare Council and this original one, I believe, was
probably as a result of deliberations at Farm Animal
Welfare Council.

Q. Can you turn, please, I am afraid it was originally an A5
document and so you have to turn it sideways, if you would
like to look at the paragraph numbers, that is probably the
easiest way, paragraph 55 which is on the right-hand page
which has "11" at the bottom? There should be a bold black
heading: "Disposal of unwanted chicks and hatchery waste"?
A. Yes.

Q. Paragraph 55 says: "Unwanted chicks awaiting slaughter
should be treated as humanely as those intended for
retention or sale"?
A. Yes.
