Day 009 - 08 Jul 94 - Page 46
1 for our Sundaes in Germany, and if customers, if we can
work out all the issues related to it, I can see that
2 growing over time within McDonald's.
3 Q. How long has that been underway in Germany then?
A. I really do not know for sure. I know for at least a
4 year probably.
5 Q. But you have not thought to introduce that into other
countries yet or you have not done so?
6 A. Well, it is -- I do not know, I do not know. Of all
the packaging items we deal with, that particular one is
7 probably one of the smallest items that we purchase. So
it is not one that I am familiar with in all countries.
8 In the states, I can tell you that in the United States we
have looked at options, we have tested options, we have
9 used it in our restaurants, we have received customer feed
back. It is something that we are considering for future
10 action.
11 Q. But you are not in any great hurry to do it?
A. We are proceeding as we normally would do with any,
12 you know, new option, packaging option.
13 MR. MORRIS: Your department, the environmental affairs
department, is that just packaging or do you make
14 recommendations about other areas?
A. We get involved in issues where we feel the focus is
15 necessary. So, for example, no, I do not exclusively work
on packaging and solid waste issues. It is the
16 predominant issue I deal with because we feel and I feel
that that is our primary environmental impact and that is
17 where I spend the majority of our time.
18 If I were to say what is the second issue that I think is
a priority in our business, I would put on that list
19 energy. How can we reduce our energy consumption in our
restaurants? If I had to list the next area where I spend
20 my time at within McDonald's where we can make an impact
and stay ahead of technology or stay abreast of technology
21 and be progressive, it would be in the energy area.
22 Q. What about the third?
A. The third area of emphasis would be in our building
23 and construction and the impacts thereof. What I mean by
that, McDonald's is a growing company. We are, therefore,
24 expanding our operations and building new buildings.
I feel it is very important that we factor in
25 environmental considerations as progressively as possible
into our buildings. That ties into the energy issue, but
26 there are other environmental issues in the building.
27 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Does planning, we call "town and country
planning", come into your sphere or not?
28 A. Pardon me?
29 Q. Does planning which in country means whether you can have
a certain kind facility in a certain kind of place; that
30 is not your sphere?
A. No, that is not what I would get involved with and
