week for the managers as a target.

MR. MORRIS: You could have made him work longer hours, you said
-- you could have made him work six days a week or seven
days a week if you had wanted to, but you did not?
       A. Can I just refer to that bit?

  Q. In the last sentence.
       A. Of which page?

  Q. Sorry, at paragraph (5)?
       A. OK.

  Q. "He only worked five days a week"?
       A. I could have insisted to him that he worked more hours
       but chose not to.

  Q. I mean, could you have insisted that he worked six days a
       week, for example?
       A. Yes. I did insist that he schedule himself the same
sort of shifts as he expected his Assistant Managers to
work, but he did not and he failed to do that consistently,
or he would have to change his schedule because of some
arrangement. He would set out to work a close or work a
Sunday, but something would come up and he would not end up
       working it at all.

  Q. Right. Around this period, this whole period, there were
other stores being set up in Colchester; is that correct?
       Was it the previous year the Tolgate store had been set up;
       is that correct?
       A. The period that I was supervising Ray?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Tolgate was set up in November 1990 and he
       went there to manage it?
       A. Correct, yes.

  Q. As I understand it -----

MR. MORRIS: The Leisure World, when was that set up?
       A. Well, it opened at the beginning of August.

  Q. Of?
       A. 91, I believe.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Your first year as Area Supervisor?
       A. Yes

MR. MORRIS: Leisure World opened in August 91?
       A. It takes a few months preparation before it opens.

  Q. Had there been salaried management working to prepare the
Leisure World store, you know, earmarked for the Leisure
World store, and were working there before it opened up, or
does it not work like that?
       A. Yes. I think there were. I think David Cable from,
who was the Manager of Tolgate, I think, after me -- when
Mr. Harney was made Store Manager of Tolgate, probably not
long after I was promoted to Supervisor, and I think then
David Cable became the Store Manager in-waiting, if you
