  Q. 48 hours a week was the legal maximum?
       A. Was the legal maximum for young people under 18.

  Q. What about things like complaints, grievances, disciplinary
procedures, matters of that kind, did that fall within your
       remit?
       A. There is a disciplinary procedure and I was at the end
       of the appeal ---

  Q. What about grievance procedures ---
       A. -- line.

  Q. -- because that is different, that is the other side of the
       coin?
       A. Yes, the other side of the coin. We had an open goal
policy; if anyone wanted to come and refer a grievance to
me, I would listen to it, but they had their channels of
       communication.

  Q. What about contact, if any, with trade unions? Was that
something which fell within your remit?
       A. I was contacted once, I think, by a trade union. It
       would come to me.

  Q. Mr. Nicholson, can I ask you to get yellow volume X called
       Employment?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I am going to pass up a chart which is headed: "Operations
Hierarchy Chart, Salaried and Hourly Paid", is that what it
       says?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Could you put that, please, behind your statement, your
first statement, in this case which you will find at tab 1
of that volume X? Can you keep that chart open in front of
       it?
       A. Yes.

  Q. First of all, is it what it says it is?
       A. It is.

  Q. It says: "Salaried and Hourly Paid". Will you please draw
for us a notional line where it is "hourly paid" stops and
       "salaried" begins on that sheet?
       A. Between Junior Business Manager and Floor Manager.
Floor Manager is the senior hourly paid worker. Junior
Business Manager is, as the title suggests, the most junior
       salaried person in the company.

  Q. So the fact that the Floor Manager comes above the next
four in a line means that he would generally be paid more
       than they would?
       A. Indeed.

  Q. His hourly rate would be higher?
       A. Indeed.

  Q. Would those four, Lobby Host, Training Squad, Night Closer
