Day 063 - 07 Dec 94 - Page 35

type of, what is the energy amount that will come free.

  Q. Which you can use if you want?
       A. Which you can use if you incinerate it in an
       incinerator with energy recovery.

  Q. We see that the total energy requirement grows as you go
down the list: Standard Paper Wrap 1.5 British thermal
units or, no, sorry -- what are MMs in there?
       A. I think millions.

  Q. Million BTus.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What is "MSW" in the first note "1/"; it is
       probably obvious but ------
       A. Municipal solid waste.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I should have noticed that.

MS. STEEL: I might be a bit ignorant, but what is the "BTU",
       please?

MR. RAMPTON: It is -- sorry, I cannot answer that but your
       Lordship can.
       A. British thermal unit.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. I only know it in the area of central
       heating.

MR. RAMPTON: It sounds from its name as though it is a
measurement of heat, essentially, or energy in the form of
       heat?
       A. I do not know where it originates from.

  Q. It comes from Greek and the thermal bit means -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We can come back to it, if necessary. It is
a measure of either the energy or heat which may amount to
       the same thing.

MR. RAMPTON (To the witness): We see that the total energy
requirement increases as you go down the list. What I was
going to ask you -- we can all read what it says for
ourselves -- was this: We see that the polystyrene foam
container has a total energy requirement of 6.5; it has a
higher load of waterborne wastes and atmospheric emissions
and so on and so forth. But, look underneath that at the
paperboard container whose energy requirements again across
the board and its waste capability is greater than the
polystyrene foam container. Do you know what sort of
paperboard container they are talking about there? It says
       "sandwich packaging products"?
       A. I would have to look back and see what -----

  Q. It is not worth doing it now. How do you describe the
sandwich packaging in Europe that is used in Germany and,
       I think, in Austria?
       A. Top colour recycled clam shell.

  Q. Is that a paperboard container?
