Day 020 - 28 Jul 94 - Page 78
1 Q. Do you know Dr. Mark Pattison well?
A. I have known him for a number of years.
2
Q. Would it be impertinent to ask you -- again if you are not
3 willing to give an answer, please do not do so unless his
Lordship requires it -- what is your perception of his
4 attitude towards the welfare of the animals in his charge?
A. I think his attitude is that he is a caring person
5 and he is conscientious about animal welfare, but you
could ask him that question.
6
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know where he came from to his
7 present job?
A. He did a PhD, I believe, in North America. He was
8 employed at one stage at the Central Veterinary Laboratory
at Weybridge, I believe. Prior to that he was a graduate
9 of the veterinary school at Bristol University.
10 Q. He came from academic life?
A. He had a period in academia, yes, and particular
11 expertise in poultry pathology.
12 MR. RAMPTON: You came back to Sun Valley in April of that year
at our request or at the request of McDonald's?
13 A. Yes.
14 Q. Dr. Gregory, you told us, I think it was yesterday, that
you were there on the killing line for about, you thought,
15 three and a half hours; is that right?
A. I was in the premises for three and a half hours.
16
Q. Sorry. My failure of recollection. You told us that
17 during the course of that time you had a long discussion
at Sun Valley with the Ministry of Vet or Vets; is that
18 right?
A. That is correct.
19
Q. I do not want you to repeat what passed between you and
20 the vet. I would like to know, however, what the topic or
topics of that discussion was or were?
21 A. It was the welfare of stunning and slaughter in their
premises.
22
Q. Was that a vet that had a regular attendance at those
23 premises?
A. Yes, that was his designated area. That processing
24 plant fell within his designated area.
25 Q. I cannot ask you what he told you, but I think I can ask
you this: Was there anything in what he told you about
26 his observations at Sun Valley which led you to doubt the
validity of your own opinions and observations?
27 A. No.
28 Q. Only two other short things, Dr. Gregory -- I am conscious
his Lordship is under some pressure of time. I do only
29 have two more questions.
30 MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have a meeting which I will not go to if
I have more important claims on my time here.
