     1
         Q. Did they give a mark to what they call the shooting
     2 quotient?
              A. What do you mean by mark?
     3
         Q. They give a value?
     4 A. Yes, they give a value.

5 Q. Which they call a shooting equation?
              A. Yes.
     6
         Q. That is a measure of accuracy?
     7 A. Correct.

8 Q. Can we move on to something a little different? You have
not got it, but I would like you to have -- my Lord, I am
9 now going to refer the witness to the Abstract of the
Defence. (Handed). In this document -- you can put that
10 one away, so far as I am concerned, though it may well be
you will need it in due course -----
    11
MR. MORRIS: What tab, what volume are we on?
    12
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Mine has Abstract of Pleadings June 1994.
13 Can I put all the other bundles away?

14 MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, so far as I am concerned, your Lordship
will need the leaflet complained of in a moment.
15 Dr. Gregory, please turn to tab 6 of this volume. It is a
section which on the first page is entitled Rearing and
    16 Slaughtering of Animals?
              A. Yes.
    17
         Q. It is a mere title page; the second page is headed:
18 Reamended Particulars of Justification of Fair Comment.
Do not bother about that, but this is a statement of the
19 case which these defendants will seek to prove in relation
to the welfare of animals. Do you understand?
    20 A. I understand that.

21 Q. On that first main page of text which is headed at the top
of page 2, we see these words underlined -- do you have
    22 the underlined passage?
              A. Yes.
    23
         Q. "It is also the Defendants' case that the rearing of those
24 cattle, chicken and pigs involves unnecessary cruelty and
suffering." I do not ask you about that. I do ask you
25 about this: "Further that some of the beef used by the
Plaintiffs comes from old dairy cows and the dairy
26 industry involves a great deal of suffering for cows".
Are you able, Dr. Gregory, to comment upon a general
    27 statement of that kind?
              A. I am not able to comment, to give a categorical "yes"
28 or "no". I am able to comment in terms of making a useful
              contribution to the question.
    29
         Q. Please may we have that contribution?
30 A. Animal suffering, or lack of animal welfare, I think,
is a function of three things, three distinct things.
