Day 135 - 15 Jun 95 - Page 10

  Q. You do not remember? When you overheard him talking to
other people about trade unions, do you remember what they
       were discussing then?
       A. I honestly cannot say; it is a long time ago.

  Q. Did you ever talk to anybody else about Mr. Sutcliffe's
       interest in trade unions?
       A. Not that I recall.

  Q. Did you ever talk to any other crew members about unions,
either asking them what they thought about unions or
telling them yours or McDonald's views on unions?
       A. Not that I recall.

  Q. You do not remember. You are aware, I presume, of
Mr. Nicholson making a visit to the East Ham store to talk
       to -----
       A. No, I was not actually.

  Q. You were not aware of it?
       A. No.

  Q. So you were Second Assistant Manager?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Or First Assistant Manager possibly, and you were
completely unaware of what was going on at the store in
       this area?
       A.  I do not believe I was a Second Assistant at the time;
I seem to remember being the Floor Manager.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You said you were a Second Assistant in
1987. What was the date when Mr. Nicholson visited?
Mr. Sutcliffe, on the face of his statement, worked for
over 12 months from December 1986 which, I suppose, might
have taken him into early 1988. If his recollection is
right about that in his statement, it is through 1987.

MS. STEEL: Right. I think actually that the pleadings are
wrong because they say 1986, but I think it is 1987 that
       Mr. Sutcliffe was there.

MR. JUSTICE BELL (To the witness): In any event, you became
Store Manager in 1988, you said?
       A. Roughly, yes, six years, five years, something like
       that.

  Q. Without looking back at the computer, I thought you said
you became Second Assistant in 1987 and Store Manager in
1988. Did you become First Assistant in between or not?
       A. For a very short period, yes.

MS. STEEL: Do you know how long that was?
       A. I know from turning salaried to becoming Store Manager
I think it was a year.

  Q. And Second Assistant was when you became salaried?
       A. Yes.
