process because they tend to go in and create towns, and
then clear around the towns back southward again.

  Q. In view of that, I would like you to look at one other
map. This is a little map produced by the Defendants. My
Lord, it was produced when Mr. Mombio was in the witness
box on 23rd April of this year. It was a map made by a
Dr. , Professor, Mr. -- I do not know which it was --
Kotac from an American university. It was diagrammatic and
it was in black and white.

I am afraid I did not put it anywhere, except in my master
file. So it may be that it is with Mr. Mombio's statement.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, I have that.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I am grateful. I am hoping Miss Branford
could find one. I have got a spare, but unfortunately it
is one of the ones I have written on and I do not want to
       use that for this purpose.

I did give Mr. Mombio one and it should be still up there,
but one on which I marked where the Sinop point is.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That is the one I have.

MR. RAMPTON: Perhaps the witness could have the same one.

MS. STEEL: Can I just say, I seem to remember that there was
some disagreement about whether the towns that Mr. Rampton
had marked were actually in the right place, but I cannot
       remember offhand.

MR. RAMPTON: There was no disagreement about it. I merely
observed that I had done it using a ruler, on what is quite
evidently a very small scale map and it might not be
accurate. I invited everybody else to do the work
themselves, so they can see whether it is accurate or not.

I am not asking you, Miss Branford, to look at the places
where I have marked the names of the towns because they may
not be accurate, that will emerge later and it will be
significant if they are accurate. If you look at the map,
you will see a light grey, a black and a white; yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. The light grey says "surviving tropical rain forest 1982"
and black represents land which has been deforested since
1940. Therefore, we infer, between 1940 and 1982; yes?
       A. Yes.

  Q. What I am asking you is this, am I right to think that,
call it if you like, the border between the black and the
white in the southern part of the picture, where I have
written "Sinop", for example, above there is a loop of
white making its way into an area of black; do you see
       that?
       A. Yes.

  Q. The area which was deforested first would have been the
