Day 101 - 10 Mar 95 - Page 57
mentioned earlier about Dr. Pattison lectured to the
McDonald's European Quality Assurance Department on animal
welfare issues. We have seen a paper written by
Dr. Pattison and I believe it is dated 1993. Was that
something that he was asked to prepare for these lectures?
Are you aware of that paper?
A. If you point me to it, I do not know really without
seeing it.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I have a spare copy here but I am just
trying to find where it was put. It was put behind
Dr. Pattison's statement, yellow IX, tab 5.

MS. STEEL: This is dated 1st April 1993?
A. Yes.

Q. Is this what Dr. Pattison prepared for that talk, do you
know, or those lectures?
A. I would guess it is. It says: "Presentation to
McDonald's staff 1st April 1993". I think that is the one
that I am referring to.

Q. Has he just done the one lecture or has he done a number?
A. No, this was the only one, as far as I am aware, on
animal welfare and it was done to McDonald's European
Quality Assurance departments.

Q. What was the purpose of that?
A. To inform our -- to inform everybody around Europe and
expert -- we have regular meetings as European Quality
Assurance departments, and we talk about specific issues
that are particularly relevant at a given time. It was
felt in 1993 that animal welfare was an appropriate topic
to bring up again and discuss.

Q. Had there been any similar seminars or presentations on
animal welfare prior to this?
A. To the McDonald's Quality Assurance group? No, this is
the first one that I am aware of, unless there were any
before my time.

Q. So you felt it was important to increase the awareness the
Quality Assurance department in Europe on this issue?
A. Yes, I think in the UK we are so much further ahead on
this issue then the rest of Europe. That is why
Dr. Pattison specifically was asked to speak, being at the
forefront, if you like. He presented these things to the
relevant McDonald's Quality Assurance managers in other
countries.

Q. You have read the Five Freedoms on the front. Presumably,
you have read that before, have you?
A. Yes.

Q. Do you feel that that is something that animals ought to
have, those Five Freedoms?
A. Yes, yes, I mean, people that know a lot more about the
subject than myself have made those recommendations and
I would not argue with them.
