Day 123 - 09 May 95 - Page 35
In any event, how could I ever know whether I have a
reliable picture? For better or worse, it is my own
judgment on the basis of the evidence that I have heard
which has got to decide these matters.

MR. MORRIS: It might be helpful to say we do not believe we
will be asking any questions beyond Thursday.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No.

MR. MORRIS: I am having a bit of difficulty because I am
conscious there are quite a lot of issues to juggle around,
so that is why it seems to be taking a long time.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. I know you made a remark a few days ago
about, you made some comment to the effect that, perhaps,
Mr. Rampton was not cross-examining at great length because
he accepted the merit of what your witnesses said.
Regardless of whether that was said entirely seriously or
not, you must not think that I am impressed one way or the
other by length of cross-examination or the areas which it
covers.

At the end of the day, in the great wealth of information
which will have passed in one direction or another across
this court, I have to concentrate on the hard information
on hard topics, if I can express it that way. You have
made a pretty good fist in your attempts to get your points
across. It would help yourself as well as me if you
concentrate on the information you really want me to take
on board.

MR. MORRIS: Obviously, this particular witness is a unique
witness. It is not that I want to have a long -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I appreciate that and I am not saying this to
cut you shorter than you need to be, but I think you can
edit pretty well to some advantage. I say that having read
the transcript and saw the amount of information. I notice
we have had about 95 pages of transcript for that day.

MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MS. STEEL: The first 30 of those were Mr. Preston actually.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I know, that includes Mr. Preston until about
mid morning, and it included some preliminary comment and
some discussion at the end, but we had 95 pages of
transcript on 1st July.

MR. MORRIS: Can I sit down?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just collect your thoughts. If you want a
break, say so.

MS. STEEL: Can I just ask about one thing? (To the witness):
Last time you were here you were asked about the price of a
loaf of bread?
A. Yes.
