Day 267 - 21 Jun 96 - Page 62
brought up at meetings?
A. There were other issues brought up, yes there were.

MS. STEEL: Mr. Clare, at various places throughout your notes
you have referred to matters being discussed and leaflets
as radical crap and other such abusive terms, and describe
people in the group and obnoxious -- you know, made
obnoxious comments to do with people in the group. Were
you basically pretty antagonistic towards the people in the
group and its politics?
A. No, I was not. They were personal opinions that I made
at the time, or personal comments that I made.

Q. So you did feel personally antagonistic towards some of the
things the group was doing and some of the people in the
group?
A. No. It was not the sort of thing that I heard
everyday.

Q. Well, does that make it crap or does that make somebody
ugly?
A. Certain topics that were discussed, I did classify as
that, yes.

Q. What about describing people as ugly?
A. In hindsight, perhaps I should not have said that.
It was on observation. It was the word that came to my
mind when I wrote those notes up afterwards.

Q. You did not share the politics of the group, did you?
A. No. The politics of the group were so varied, but as
a rule I would probably have to say, no.

Q. And you were antagonistic towards the politics of the group
and the people that were involved with it, were you not?
A. No, not at all.

Q. That is why you were prepared to go in and make up any old
rubbish about what you might have seen and who was present
on any particular days, what they were saying, because you
did not really care as long as you got what your bosses
were asking for you would get your wages. So it did not
really matter what you wrote down and you could do the
dirty on this group of people who you did not really like,
and you did not like their politics?
A. I completely disagree with what you have just said.

Q. Can I just ask you about the demonstration that you went
to. What demonstration was this?
A. I recall an anti-polltax demonstration.

Q. Where was it?
A. If my geography serves well, I think it was
Pentonville or Hollowway prison. I cannot recall. It was
that particular prison.

Q. Outside the prison, yes?
A. Yes.

Q. Was it about somebody having been jailed for not having
