Day 121 - 04 May 95 - Page 68
What you must do is make a list of these matters which in
final preparation of cross-examination you may come across
which you are unhappy about and we will deal with them in
due course. But the phrase I have used is "on the hoof",
and one cannot be having interlocutory arguments and
judgments about discovery of this document and then an hour
later discovery of the next document. It is not an
efficient or helpful way of conducting the trial. So you
must put them together and put them on the list and sort
them out in order of importance with a view to doing what
I suggested yesterday afternoon be done.

MS. STEEL: Do employees at McDonald's, crew members, get
contracts, employment contracts, for specified lengths of
time?
A. For specified lengths of time?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do crew members ever have fixed term
contracts?
A. No, my Lord.

MS. STEEL: Is it sometimes the case then that you take people
on for -- you specify it is only for three months
employment, or something like that?
A. Not that I know of.

Q. If you could just get pink volume XI, please.
A. Yes.

Q. If you turn to page 17?
A. In?

Q. Tab 1.
A. Yes.

Q. Right at the bottom of that page, "Employees not eligible
for statutory sick pay", and it says, "You will be excluded
from statutory sick pay if you were taken on for a
specified period of no more than three months". Could you
explain what that is?
A. I have never heard of it. This may, as far as I know
-- I am afraid I am guessing -- this is just a copy of the
regulations. I have never heard of anybody being offered a
three month contract at McDonald's. I think this is just a
reiteration of what the rules are regarding SSP.

Q. Have you ever been aware of complaints or problems with
staff not getting any training, crew members not getting
any training, when they start on a new job?
A. No.

Q. That has never been brought to your attention that that was
happening?
A. No.

Q. Would you expect every crew member to be trained before
being left on a particular machine ---
A. Yes.

Q. -- or grill or fire station or whatever?
