Day 077 - 25 Jan 95 - Page 47
organism or what?

MR. RAMPTON: I will hide behind the rule that I am not allowed
to give evidence, if may?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I now Mr. Walker is not a medical expert, but
he may have sufficient understanding just to give an answer
about that in principle, and then it can be collected later
if it is wrong.

MR. RAMPTON: If he does not, Professor Jackson will do.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you know?
A. It is a matter of concentration, sir, but I do qualify
it by saying I am not medical. But, if you have a high
concentration of a specific organism, that will make you
ill; whereas if you have a low concentration of a specific
organism, the body's immune system will hold it and fight
it.

MR. MORRIS: Can I just say with regard to Mr. North's statement
that he has asked us to point out, as was specified by
McDonald's, he did not have access to documentation and
also he was not allowed to visit any abattoirs.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No. I saw where he had gone. If you still
have a particular concern about -----

MR. MORRIS: Just also the third point, of course, is that he
was not allowed to visit a store during rushed periods.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. I do not think that concerns the point
which is to be raised with Mr. Walker, but if you still
have a concern about documentation which you think you
ought to see, then of course raise that with Dr. Walker, if
you think I have not taken on board some particular point
you think you have on that. But leave it there for the
moment.

MR. RAMPTON: I am sorry about this, but you will need to fish
out some pale blue powder blue files marked "Defendants
witnesses" or something -- volume 1B is the one you need.
Can you turn, please, to section E? My Lord, it should go
behind Mr. North's first statement.

Can I ask you, because it does bear upon another statement
made earlier by Mr. North, Mr. Walker, this briefly in
passing: So far as the question is concerned whether
residues of antibiotics, hormone promoting drugs or
pesticides in the flesh of animals may constitute a danger
to human health, what is your view about that question?
Can we take them separately -----
A. Yes, I was thinking that through, sir. There are
certain hormones which I would not think were dangerous to
human beings, but I certainly would think that chemical
pesticides were dangerous to human beings.

Q. You think they might be?
A. Yes.
