MR. JUSTICE BELL: Tab 9. Have you got your statement there?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Can you turn to internal page 5, please? In paragraph 17
you said: "On arrival each consignment of meat is sent for
bacteriological analysis, the results of which fall into
three categories: (1) Satisfactory - which means there is
a total colony of 1 million per gramme. (2) Passable -
which means that there is a total colony of between one and
10 million per gramme; and (3) Unsatisfactory - which means
there is more than 10 million per gramme." Are those
       figures correct?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Are they the current figures?
       A. Yes.

  Q. They are? Has there been any change to those figures in
the last four or five years?
       A. No, I do not think so.

  Q. Not as far as you remember?
       A. No.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can someone tell me -- I had assumed that 10
to the power of two was 100, and so on, but am I wrong
about that? Is 10 to the power of one 10, or is that 10
       multiplied by 10, ie. 100?

MR. MORRIS: I think 10 to the power of two is 100.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Right. In that case the mental arithmetic
I did a day or so ago was wrong.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I was going to say that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I started with 10 to the power of one being
       100.

MR. RAMPTON: 10 to the power of five is a million.

MR. MORRIS: 10 to the power of five is not a million.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: It is 100,000.

MR. MORRIS: Yes, it is the number of noughts, so 10 to the
power of 100 is a 100 noughts, for example.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think you are right about that. If 10 to
the power of one is still 10, then 10 to the power of five
is 100,000, then we had multiples of 10 to the power of
whatever in the specification. It was five times 10 to the
power of five or 10 to the power of six, or whatever.

MS. STEEL: They are the current figures, yes?
       A. As far as I am aware, yes.

  Q. When the meat comes in, it is two cores that are taken from
       the combo bins?
