that provide information. So, there are many sources of
information from the National Cancer Institute.

Q. I am going to in a moment suggest to you, Dr. Barnard, and
you may as well be forewarned of this, that, in fact, the
graph of certainty, if I can call it that, particularly in
relation to breast cancer has, in fact, gone downwards
since 1982.

I am going to invite you to travel with me down a
chronological road so we can see whether I am right or
not. But before I do that, I would like you to look at
the next of your references, No. 6, which is a National
Cancer Institute document for a year earlier 1991. It is
entitled: "Cancer of the Colon and Rectum: Research
Report". It was revised in October 1991, which one can
see in the bottom left-hand corner, the very month in
which you appeared on the television programme.

I am afraid to say, once again, I have not been supplied
with the whole of this document, only with selected
extracts. I have got, as I hope you have, a page numbered
6 at the top left-hand corner. Have you got that?
A. I do.

Q. You do. Sorry, you have to say "yes" because you are
being recorded in the bowels of the court.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We can see nods, but the recording equipment
cannot.

MR. RAMPTON: It is not a matter of courtesy to me; that does
not matter at all.
A. Sorry; my pause was simply because it took me a bit of
time to identify the page number on this document, so
forgive my pause.

Q. Have you got the original of this document with you in
England or did you only bring copy pages?

MR. MORRIS: No.

THE WITNESS: I have the original here.

MR. RAMPTON: Do you think that I could have a quick look at
it?

MR. MORRIS: We did show it to the Plaintiffs yesterday, as far
as I remember.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Mr. Rampton is only asking to look at it.
(Handed).

MR. RAMPTON: Thank you very much. Will you forgive me a
moment, my Lord, while I glance at this?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Mr. Rampton may ask you, and if he
does not I would like to at some stage, whether you can
identify an NCI publication which does say that 35 to 50
per cent of cancers are due to diet, as opposed to some
