Day 152 - 11 Jul 95 - Page 50
A. Yes.

Q. So you would have, in effect, three pay related performance
reviews every year; is that right? Have I got it right?
A. Yes, give or take the three weeks of the probationary
review.

Q. Oh, and the probationary review?
A. So it could be within a year and three weeks that you
would get three pay reviews within that year.

Q. What was the frequency or incidence of pay increases on
performance review? There were three grades in those days,
5p, 10p and 15p; is that right?
A. That is correct.

Q. How frequently, roughly speaking -- again I am not asking
for precise figures -- was the 5p award granted?
A. How often?

Q. Yes. How often? If you cannot hear me, do say, I will
bellow.
A. The 5p, probably 50 to 70 per cent of people would get
the 5p.

Q. What about 10p?
A. 20 per cent.

Q. And 15?
A. Between five and 15 per cent, five to 20 per cent.

Q. What about bonuses, Mr. Davis, what were they and when were
they paid?
A. Bonuses would be given out for if somebody performed
over and above the sort of common level or come up with a
good idea or that sort of incidence.

Q. What of the suggestion that pay increases and bonuses, in
particular, were only given to toadies who crept their way
into the favour of management?
A. They were given on performance. You know, the whole
way that I used to run the restaurant in Colchester was to
do on performance, not on favouritism, or whose friend you
were or whatever.

Q. Mr. Davis, what place is there for creeps and toadies in a
McDonald's restaurant?
A. There may be the odd person who is a creep or a toadie,
but it certainly does not do them any good in their long
term career. The job is too performance related to be
governed by, you know, somebody trying to creep around a
Manager.

Q. You must have hired an awful lot of people during your time
in Operations?
A. Yes, a fair few.

Q. During your time, three years, at Colchester you must have
hired quite a few first time crew members?
A. Certainly, yes.
