Day 081 - 31 Jan 95 - Page 50

MS. STEEL: How is that being undertaken?
       A. Well, by breeding from salmonella-free strains.

  Q. Are there also drugs being used to combat salmonella?
       A. What sort of drugs?

  Q. Antibiotics, things like that?
       A. In poultry?

  Q. Yes.
       A. Not that I am aware of.

  Q. You are not?
       A. No.

  Q. You are not aware of it. What about the antibiotic
"Trimethroprim", is that something that is commonly used?
       A. I have no idea.

  Q. You do not know. Do you know much about animal husbandry?
       A. Not in the professional sense, no.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Would you keep your voice up?
       A. Not in a professional sense, no.

MR. MORRIS: Do you have any view as an Environmental Health
Officer or in that profession about the routine use of
       antibiotics for curing disease?
       A. No.

  Q. For animals?
       A. No, I have no view on that.

MR. MORRIS: Do you know that that is the general standard,
general response, to disease in animals, is to routinely
       dose with antibiotics?
       A. I know it has been in the past. I do not know whether
       that is still current.

  Q. Is that because you are now out of the field, so to speak?
       A. It is because I do not have current information.

  Q. Until when did you know that was a typical practice?
       A. I do not know until when, it was common knowledge,
I think. Most people would be aware of that.

  Q. So can we say that would have been a typical practice at
       least up to 1990?
       A. I could not say that.

  Q. No, but you did say -----

MR. RAMPTON: No, my Lord, I do not believe they are asking the
right man. This man is not an expert in the treatment of
       animals with antibiotics.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let me just ask. (To the witness): Do you
know more about that than a normally well-read person would
do, let me ask first of all?
       A. I only know from what I have read in general terms.
