Day 249 - 14 May 96 - Page 34

       name Webster.

  Q. But on the basis of that information you decided to take
out the writ in the name of Webster instead of the name of
       Steel?
       A. No, I did not, the lawyers did.

  Q. Was that all they told you?
       A. Well, I mean, they told me they were not particularly
interested in London Greenpeace. They regarded you as a
small organisation of very little importance. What they
were interested in was the possible connections with the
animal liberation groups, and they did not indicate either
of you two were involved in that.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can you keep your voice up, please?
       A. Sorry, they did not indicate ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a moment.

MS. STEEL: So, they were interested in?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No, that was the whole of your... Were you
going to say more; you said they did not indicate...?
       A. They did not indicate that either Gravett or Ms. Steel
were involved in the Animal Liberation Front. They said
there were associations between the group and Animal
       Liberation.

MS. STEEL: So they had a general interest in, sort of, animal
       rights groups and people campaigning?
       A. I mean, they are an intelligence gathering
       organisation.

  Q. About the animal rights in general?
       A. About animal liberation groups generally, yes.

  Q. Right.
       A. What they wanted was -- going back to the word
-- a perch from which they could observe the people in the
       group.

  Q. After that time, there were then four weeks between that
       and the picket?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Was it the same Special Branch officers that attended the
       picket?
       A. I only saw one again; that was the one that was in the
       control group.

  Q. How many came the four weeks before the protest?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I make sure? Are we still on October '89
       now?

  MS. STEEL: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We have gone...
