Day 014 - 20 Jul 94 - Page 36
1 MR. RAMPTON: Sorry, cariogenicity. That is mind set brought
about by the circumstances of this case. I apologise.
2 Cariogenicity.
3 MR. JUSTICE BELL: In other words, a tendency to rot?
A. Yes.
4
MR. RAMPTON: This is really all about dental caries and the
5 need perhaps for fluoridation, is it not? "iii: Non-milk
extrinsic sugars may favour the consumption of food
6 energy, and in predisposed individuals may have
undesirable metabolic effects, but are not directly
7 related to the development of cardiovascular disease,
essential hypertension, diabetes mellitus or behavioural
8 abnormalities"
A. Yes.
9
Q. That, Professor Wheelock, appears to the layman as a
10 fairly definite sort of statement. To the scientist does
that seem to be categorical as statement? They say "are
11 not directly related to development of ----"
A. Again, I would accept that as a fair assessment of the
12 situation.
13 Q. "iv. For the obese consumption of non-milk extrinsic
sugars should be restricted as part of a general
14 reduction of dietary energy. For non- obese adults,
consumption of non- milk extrinsic sugars up to about 30
15 per cent of food energy does not carry special metabolic
risks.
16
"v. Extreme intakes of sucrose above about 200 grammes a
17 day or about 30 per cent of food energy, may be associated
in normal adults with elevations of cholesterol, blood
18 glucose and insulin concentrations all of which may be
undesirable?
19 A. That is getting on for half a pound of sugar.
20 Q. I was going to ask you: How much ---- Americans would call
it 'candy'- or boxes of chocolate ---- would one have to
21 eat to get up to that sort of level.
A. 200 grammes is getting on for half a pound.
22
Q. That is half pound of sugar in its neat form?
23 A. Exactly. So, I suppose, I mean, some sweets are
pretty 100 per cent sugar. If you really gorge yourself
24 on those then you probably would have a problem under this
clause.
25
Q. "5.6 Dietary Reference Values
26
"5.6.1 The Panel did not recommend that intake of
27 intrinsic or milk sugars be limited. They can usefully
contribute, with starch, to energy requirements not met by
28 other restricted dietary components". I do not have to
ask you anything about that.
29
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do they have a value in quick energy
30 replacement?
A. Yes, a small amount, something sweet, in the afternoon
