Day 138 - 20 Jun 95 - Page 25
Q. Did you yourself, Mr. Stein, go to Philadelphia ---
A. Many, many times.

Q. -- during this course of this affair?
A. Yes.

Q. What in the end did the Company do in response to this
campaign?
A. We had met with the clergy, in particular, community
leaders in the area to try to get the real facts out and,
as part of it, we were pointing out, if you will, the bogus
nature of the alleged survey.

Q. How did you know it was bogus?
A. Because when you took a look at the methodology and you
traced behind what they had done, what they had done was
randomly contacted people in stores -- they could be crew
people, they could be managers -- and would ask a question
and get an answer. They skipped certain stores. It was a
random attempt to support their claims.

Q. Pause there. I think that they covered 33 stores in all?
A. Yes.

Q. Whether systematically or not, I do not know. But how many
stores were there in Philadelphia at that time, do you
remember?
A. There would probably in the greater Philadelphia area,
McDonald's stores, there would be around 200.

Q. Did you do any research of your own, the Company, I mean,
with or without assistance of the owner/operators, to
determine the validity of this PUP claim?
A. Yes, we did. What we did was we asked all of the
owner/operators as well as the Company stores -- Company
stores we already had records -- we asked the
owner/operators to supply us with their pay records so that
we could do our own complete analysis and determine whether
or not the claim was correct or not.

Q. You found, I think you told us that, it was not?
A. It was not.

Q. Did you get in due course an outside body to look at it as
well?
A. Yes, we did. It became -----

Q. Just have a look at tab 94, just so that we can see the
name so you do not have to remember it, though you probably
do, Towers, Perrin, Forster & Crosby; who are they?
A. Towers Perrin?

Q. Yes.
A. They are a worldwide outside consulting organisation in
the area of compensation and benefits. They are, in that
field of compensation and benefits they are well known on a
worldwide basis.

Q. Who is Charles Perry?
A. Charles Perry?
