Day 046 - 04 Nov 94 - Page 55

actually prepare hamburgers, that is, a beef or whatever
       patty in a bun?
       A. It is extensive.

  Q. At home?
       A. It is extensive. It is probably the favourite cookout
for back air cookouts and barbecues during the summer and
all year long, but it is favourite of families.

  Q. You can go into supermarkets, can you, and buy big plastic
bags full of buns which are specially for hamburgers?
       A. That is correct -- hamburger buns, hotdog buns; and
then you can buy the patty. Sometimes the patties are
already formed and sometimes the parent forms them himself,
or it is cooked at home and formed at home. But I would
say it is, in my opinion, one of the staples of the
       American diet.

MS. STEEL: I cannot find it in the American section, but in the
English IBA guide, it talks about "children's ability to
distinguish between fact and fantasy will vary awarding to
their age and individual personality". Would you agree
       with that?
       A. Again, I am not an expert, but I think, in general,
       that may be true.

  Q. There are some children who might not realise, or they
might well realise that that is not a real live setting,
but they not might not realise that hamburgers do not come
       from hamburgers patches?
       A. I think most children have their first experience with
hamburgers probably at home, as opposed to anywhere else,
but I do not know. I do not have all the information to be
       able to answer that question.

MR. MORRIS: If you did show slaughterhouses and the truth in
that advert to children, would that put the children off
       from eating?
       A. I do not know. I would imagine that it would not be
       very appetising.

  Q. Let me ask you a question -- you may not know the answer --
a lot of children do go vegetarian in this country when
they learn the connection between how food, where it comes
from -- meat, basically. Does that happen in America, as
       well?
       A. I would not have any information about that. My
       children-----

  Q. But you are aware that a lot of children are vegetarians?
       A. I know there are children who are vegetarians, yes.

  Q. You do not have any vegetarian Happy Meal choice, do you?
       A. No.

  Q. So if you showed something that put children off and they
go vegetarian, for example, your particular business would
not be able to offer them a Happy Meal that you are
       promoting?
       A. I do not think that the role of advertising is to show
