Day 134 - 13 Jun 95 - Page 70
what we do is current and relevant, and that particularly
I suppose is in the area of training managers in those
types of things.

Q. When did you change the training on conducting performance
reviews?
A. We have changed it a number of times and by "changed
it" that means you update it, you use a different videos
and things like that. I think we have probably updated the
session. I cannot really remember but last year once,
about thee years ago something like that.

Q. But in terms of actually implementing programmes as opposed
to just generally, you know, a general update?
A. Well, certain things are new like from the time you
mentioned 1990, again I cannot remember the dates, but the
scholarship and education programmes and junior business
management programmes have all come about during that time.

Q. Sorry, the programme that was implemented as opposed to an
update, you implemented a programme in respect of
performance reviews, did you?
A. No. The term is used to refer to what we do. That is
perhaps the use of the way I have put it. In other words,
all of those types of programmes and policies that are in
place. I think I have said it. Perhaps I need to
translate it differently, that we -- I am not sure what
I can add.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: This has arisen by the use of the word
"programme". By "programme" do you mean that you have a
specific long-running plan to improve something or is any
move to improve anything at any given time a programme in
your terminology?
A. Well, what I meant in that answer was that it was not
that we had a specific new programme which was suddenly
introduced which would address the points about retention
and turnover. It was that I believe that the things we
have been doing on an ongoing basis in a different way are
things that are relevant and timely and so on. That is
what I was meaning; not some particular big new campaign on
a particular thing, because performance reviews had been in
operation before that. Those were illustrations that
I gave just now.

MR. MORRIS: So what were the most effective things that
improved that meant that turnover, in your submission,
reduced because of the action that the Company had taken,
apart from performance reviews which you have mentioned?
A. I am not sure -- could you ask me again because I was
about to launch into some kind of answer but what was the
beginning part of your question?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Are there any specific new features which you
introduced which you think were particularly responsible
for reducing turnover?
A. I think the use of the "I think is relevant" because
probably it is because I am preparing for the fact you are
going to ask me for figures on it and I will not have
figures that can say this had this effect.
