Day 254 - 22 May 96 - Page 15
try to find out if there is consistency and by which means
the protection, if it is exists, is manifest.

Q. But this study, which is a comprehensive look at, I think
you have said, the various studies that have been done has
not pointed to anything saying the opposite about olive
oil?
A. I think what it has said is that the position is an
open one, that we do not know, that there is some evidence
to suggest that olive oil might be protected but not
necessarily so.

Q. But there is no evidence pointing the other way?
A. No.

Q. Which, bearing in mind that this person has reviewed all
the scientific literature, I think that is what you said
earlier?
A. Yes, but, with respect, what he is actually saying is
that there may be but that there is no conclusive proof
that is the situation.

Q. Going back to where we were before then. With the
exception of olive oil, would you agree that certainly over
30, 35 per cent of energy from fat in your diet is
considered to be excessive by virtually everybody's
standard?
A. No, I do not think that one can say that. I do not
think there is a body of evidence which would support that
argument.

Q. They all make those recommendations.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Can I just ask: Is this directed at cancer
or generally, because one of the points ----

MS. STEEL: No. It is directed at a previous answer of the
witness which was ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: One of the points which Dr. Arnott made
before is: I am not adverting strictly to 30 per cent
rather than any other figure, but whatever you can say
about fat and cancer, the position was stronger in relation
to other degenerative diseases and, therefore, one could
give certain good advice in relation to fat and diet.

What I would like you to do when you are talking about it,
since he is the cancer expert and has come as such, it
would help me when you put a question about 30 per cent fat
and so on, whether you are directing it at Doctor Arnott
with regard to cancer as just good physician's advice?

MS. STEEL: I am directing it at the point where I asked about
the recommendations that he had made to his patients and
I said that they are the patients who already have cancer
and he said: "No. I have to say I am obviously faced with
patients who have cancer, but one would recommend this to
anybody as being sensible advice".

Unfortunately, my question has not come out but his answer
