Day 247 - 10 May 96 - Page 31
McDonald's operating system is one where most people do
everything in a store, everything in a restaurant, each
job. Traditionally the union approach had been one of:
You do this job. That is it. You do not do anything
else. I think that would have affected the way our
business operates. I think it would have affected the way
the Company is managed, and I think it could have had an
effect on the result of our sales in, maybe not the
short-term but certainly in the longer term.

Is there a different way of thinking? I think all of us
think differently. Goals, objectives are somewhat at
odds. That is not necessarily a bad thing or a good thing.
I think it is a statement of fact.

MR. MORRIS: I think we can leave that now thank you very much.

MS. STEEL: I want to ask some questions about things in the
McDonald's Education Service Students Information Pack
which I think Mrs. Brinley-Codd has copies of. (Handed).

MR. MORRIS: Does everybody have a copy?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have and Mr. Preston has.

MS. STEEL: Have you seen these documents? It is a collection
of documents. Have you seen this Pack before?
A. I have seen it, yes.

Q. Right. If you look at the third sheet, there is a picture
of you. It might not be your third sheet?
A. It is in the cover.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The inside cover inside the folder.

MR. MORRIS: We do not have an original.

MS. STEEL: Just one question: In the letter that goes with
this, the third paragraph says:

Dear Student,

Two additional resources on McDonald's are Grinding it Out
by Ray Kroc, and Behind the Arches by John Love. These
books contain many interesting facts and insights about the
history, growth and philosophy of our company and may be
obtained through your library and many larger book stores."

Those books that are referred to there, you recommend, do
you, as a good way for people to get an idea of what
McDonald's is about and what it does?
A. Grinding it Out was a book written by Ray Kroc, which
talks about him, his business philosophy, his early life
and how he came to do the McDonald's thing from its origins
until not long before he passed away.

Behind the Arches was a book written by John Love but Fred
Turner, who is now Senior Chairman of the Board, instructed
Mr. Love to take the McDonald's story further, with all the
warts and everything that went with it, and put something
