Day 272 - 02 Jul 96 - Page 45

MS. STEEL: Okay. No further questions.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you. Do you have anything more to ask
       Mr. Gravett?

  MR. MORRIS: No.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes, thank you.

                   Cross-examined by MR. RAMPTON

  Q. Mr. Gravett, you say that so far as you are concerned there
was no anti-McDonald's demonstration at the East Finchley
       head office of McDonald's in this country in October 1987;
       is that right?
       A. Yes, that is true.

  Q. And you say the reason was that there was a hurricane in
the early hours of October 16th 1987 which so disrupted
travel arrangements that nobody was able to get there; is
       that right?
       A. Yes. I remember it being discussed after that day.

  Q. Well, I am not interested in what you discussed
afterwards. You did not go, did you?
       A. No.

MR. MORRIS: I think the witness should be allowed to answer
       questions in his own way.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I think it is right that if you were going to
say what someone else said to you --

MR. MORRIS: It is cross-examination. He should be entitled.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: That does not follow at all. There are the
same rules of admissibility or inadmissibility. But, Mr.
Rampton, if you are challenging him on why he said
something, he is entitled to say what was said to him.
That is not evidence of the truth of what was said to him,
but he can identify it as the reason, can he not, why he
       has said what he has?

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes, he can.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Just pause a moment. Mr. Rampton said that
you said the reason was there was a hurricane which so
disrupted travel arrangements that no one was able to get
there. And then you said I remember it being discussed
after that day. Were you going on to say anything more?
       A. Yes, I remember it being discussed in the group,
probably the following week, and no one said that they were
able to get there. So as far as we were concerned, there
was not a London Greenpeace demonstration that day.

MR. RAMPTON: Can I ask you to look at - my Lord, for the
purposes of my cross-examination, I do not know whether
this is difficult for Mr. Gravett, he will need -- well, he
will need pink 1A. Maybe he can deal with it sitting
down. It might be easier for him standing up, but that is
