Day 155 - 14 Jul 95 - Page 52
the time have been the sort of thing a lot of people talked
about in ordinary conversation, whereas if you ask someone,
the answer to that might be, "I do not know". If you ask
someone, "Did you ever talk to X about trade unions at
work, or unionisation at work", then they might have a
better prospect of giving a "yes" or "no" answer.

MR. MORRIS: The reality is, from the top to the bottom, trade
unions and McDonald's are a completely taboo subject?
A. I am not aware of that.

Q. The Company you work for is completely anti-union from top
to bottom and everybody knows it?
A. I am not aware of that either.

MR. MORRIS: Can I just ask you, Mr. Giardina, the poster that
appeared on the notice board, did you connect that with the
leaflets that were found? You saw that as part of the same
continuing?
A. No, because, as I mentioned earlier, it was a passing
glance; I did not think nothing of it whatsoever.

Q. But you know it was exactly the same leaflet, or it might
have been a different leaflet?
A. From what I vaguely remember, I could be wrong, I could
be right; I do not know.

Q. It is all a bit vague?
A. it just did not interest me or ----

Q. But you remember absolutely clearly in your statement,
(point 9), it was 2 or 3 days later.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You have made the point, Mr. Morris. I have
taken it on board.

MR. MORRIS: I was just pointing out the two or three days
later. When you came to Seven Sisters, you nearly doubled
the complement of staff?
A. That is correct.

MS. STEEL: You said by the time Mr. Magee arrived, you
basically had all your systems in place and you had now
recruited a lot more staff sufficient to handle all types
of volume. Being November as well I also had to increase
quite a lot of crew for the Christmas period. How many
more crew were taken on over Christmas?
A. It is very hard to tell because it depended on the
actual people that I had there at the time. For example,
if I had a lot of Spanish and Italians, they would normally
go back to Spain or Italy, so I obviously would have to
recruit a little bit more. If I did not, generally based
around Holloway etc., I did not need that much more, so
I played it by ear from year to year.

Q. Did the store get any busier over the Christmas period?
A. Yes.

Q. So you had to have extra crew in any event?
A. Yes.
