Day 132 - 07 Jun 95 - Page 50

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Is there any reason why you should not lend
that to Mr. Morris and Ms. Steel for the time being if they
       want to look at it?

MR. RAMPTON: No. I would resist that in the normal way on the
basis it is probably a document we went bought up the road
       in Holborn the other day.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You said it was the last one.

MR. RAMPTON: It was their only copy. I will certainly lend it
to them but I do want it back.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What I suggest you do, you borrow that for
the time being, do not mark it, take a photocopy of
anything which you think you may want to use and then of
course you can mark it as much as you like, but keep a
clean copy as well in case you need to reproduce it in the
future. Unless Mr. Rampton raises any objection, since
that report has been referred to by Mr. Purslow, I do not
see why I should not take any other information from it
which might be relevant, provided it is clear what the
meaning of the document is. If anything in a document like
that is capable of more than one meaning, then you might
have to ask a witness what they make of it, but if it is
perfectly clear then you can refer to it later anyway.

MR. RAMPTON: In the last resort the meaning of all documents in
the case, unless it is a question of intention, is for your
       Lordship anyway.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I appreciate that. It is only if something
might be ambiguous and a particular witness could give a
bit of background which helped one to the right
       interpretation.

MR. RAMPTON: Yes. My Lord, I do not know what order your
Lordship would wish to take things in this afternoon.
I would only say I would like that back next week, please.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: What I suggest you do is if you have a look
at it, copy what you think you need or ask someone else to
do it for you, and bring it back on Monday morning.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I do have now (your Lordship may say at
last) the Jarrett statement with its appendices. The only
things that are still missing are the two new plans. The
reason they are still missing is not that we do not have
the originals, we do. It is that they are being coloured
copied at Barlows at this moment. It has to go outside.
       They cannot do it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Does it go to the place across the road here
       in Carey Street?

MR. RAMPTON: It is somewhere in the City I expect. One is very
big and the other is a bit smaller. There is quite a lot
of detail on it. It will be ready by tomorrow morning, so
if we may send it to Mr. Stiles. Obviously we will send it
