Day 133 - 12 Jun 95 - Page 60

have asked about, "Are there any do not no's on sheet D" or
whether Ms. Mead can really speak as to the figures on the
sheet or not. The rest is just comment in the light of any
       other evidence we have heard.

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you understand?

  MR. MORRIS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: So I will go away now for five minutes. If
you need a bit more time tell Mr. Riley or Mr. Stiles when
he comes up and we will see. You are not to think that
because a witness may or may not be important, as Ms. Mead
may be or may not be important at the end of the day, that
you have to ask questions on every topic which she has
raised. I will not hold it against you if you do not.

                      (Short Adjournment).

MR. MORRIS: We would appreciate an adjournment on Ms. Mead's
evidence. I am finding it very difficult to find an area
to go into in any depth without reference to those
       documents.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you want to ask Ms. Mead any more
       questions this afternoon?

MR. MORRIS: To be honest I think it might be helpful if we just
adjourned as far as she is concerned.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The normal rule is that you should not speak
to anyone about your evidence until you have finished it.
Is there anything, for instance the matters in relation to
the New Earnings Survey, that you would like Ms. Mead to
       enquire about overnight?

MS. STEEL: Yes, if we could have the information about the G2
document about where the figures were from and what year
the figures were that were not McDonald's pay rates, the
pay rates that were used by comparison.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us take it step by step. If you look at
G1 first, I would like to know what the New Earnings Survey
April 1987 means. In other words, the figures which
appear, save in respect of McDonald's, I would like to know
what the survey period was for that, do you understand, not
the publication period? I would like to know whether the
prime figure is the weekly figure which may or may not be
for 39 hours, or the hourly figure, if you can get some
       help on that.

  THE WITNESS: Yes.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: G2, Ms. Steel, specifically what is it?

MS. STEEL: Well, all the charts that are there ----

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: The tables?
