MS. STEEL: Where we are going especially?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: At the moment we are going through a number
of newspaper articles which may or may not be accurate,
which the witness did not write.

  MS. STEEL: Incidentally ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have read my paper this morning, and I do
not want to read any more newspapers than I have to.

MS. STEEL: There is a specific point I am trying to get to, but
the problem is I am not finding the article I want to.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Take your time and find it, and then put what
you are suggesting to Mr. Preston. We may not have to
refer to newspaper articles at all.

MS. STEEL: Incidentally, Mr. Preston, the article on the next
page in The Guardian, in the second column, dated 12th June
1989, says "A quote from the police said that nobody had
claimed responsibility". Is that the situation that you
       were aware of?
       A. No, that is not the situation I was aware of. I was
aware the Animal Liberation Front were involved.

  Q. Well, how were you aware of that?
       A. I was told subsequently.

  Q. By whom?
       A. I am not sure if it was internally or if it was the
police themselves, but I was told about it.

  Q. But anyway, you have no direct knowledge; it was not
somebody ringing up claiming responsibility to McDonald's
       Head Office?
       A. That I do not recall.

  Q. So, for all you know, in reality it could have been a
       disgruntled former employee?
       A. Well, I think it was Animal Liberation Front.

  Q. You do not have any evidence of that?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let us leave it there. I am only going to
make decisions on admissible evidence anyway, and the whole
context of this, if it has one, is only in relation to
       motivation.

MS. STEEL: Yes. The article that I want, I have found the
part that I want. It is in the Daily Express article.
I actually want the page that is second from the back. It
says, towards the very bottom of the article, "Vegetarian
Miss Hinds' remark came during the press launch of the
charity compilation album Rainbow Warriors. All proceeds
from the sale will go to Greenpeace". So, it is correct,
is it not, that the comments were made at a launch of
       Greenpeace International?
       A. Yes.
