Day 143 - 27 Jun 95 - Page 54
embryonic predecessor in an earlier part of the pleadings.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: All I want you to put is ask Mr. Stein
whether he knows of any action in Finland in sympathy with
trade unionists in Denmark in relation to McDonald's.

MR. MORRIS: It does say in the pleading: "A trade union
publicity and boycott campaign involving the blocking of
suppliers was launched with support from trade unions in
other countries."

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I have just suggested you put the question
more or less in the terms I have put.

MR. MORRIS: Yes. Does this refresh your memory about boycott
activities in other countries at the same time after 1988?
A. No, it does not. My only knowledge was that there were
activities in Denmark. I am not aware of activities
anywhere else.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: We will have our five-minute break there.

(Short Adjournment).

MR. MORRIS: The last document from this file I want to refer
you to is 148; it is 48 in your tab. Have you got 48?
A. I think I do. It says "McDonald's" at the left.

Q. "Meeting of the working group", yes. If you read the
section to yourself about measures against the unions in
Madrid.
A. Sure.

Q. Just two questions: The four employees who were sacked and
later reinstated as a result of the Labour Inspectorate's
intervention, had they previously organised a meeting at
the store?
A. The four employees that were terminated I have no
knowledge of any meetings. I think I already mentioned a
couple of days ago that my knowledge was there was a
disturbance in the restaurant ----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You need not go through it again. As far as
you were concerned ----

MR. MORRIS: They were calling for a meeting, that is what you
said.
A. They wanted to have elections.

Q. OK.
A. I do not know about a meeting.

Q. Regarding the last line there, had McDonald's or its
branches or subsidiaries or whatever, franchisees, already
been fined twice by the Labour Inspectorate for refusing to
hold elections in its restaurants?
A. I have no knowledge at all of that.

Q. We can close that file, please. Mr. Stein, were you
talking to Mr. Rampton in the break?
