Day 112 - 31 Mar 95 - Page 34
and to the practices which you just told us about or not?
A. No, I did not.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: There would not be anything wrong with ----
A. I can assure you that I did not lay down any
time-scales. Everything that was decided about, any
improvements at the plant, was negotiated with Bob Jarrett,
as far as am concerned, at the meetings we had with him.
The only time I had any open disagreement with him was
concerning the BSE certification. He told me at our last
meeting that it is impossible to adhere to the requirements
of the BSE certification and that is why I should not
require it.

MR. RAMPTON: Then they say also: "Problems have been caused by
the manner in which the demands", your demands that is,
"have been made." You tell us that all your discussions
were very friendly except on one occasion, is that right?
A. Yes, as far as I can remember that is right.

Q. Are you at all conscious that you may sometimes appear to
be rather brusque, rather over-bearing?
A. Well, it is possible.

Q. Do you think it is at all possible that Jarretts found your
presence on their premises for 14 and a half days an
intolerable pain in the neck?
A. It is possible. They never communicated this to me in
any way, apart from when it came to BSE certification.

MR. RAMPTON: My Lord, I do not believe at the moment I can go
any further without some detailed instructions.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: No.

MR. MORRIS: Could I have five minutes? I am sure we will
finish by lunch time.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: The position is this. I suggest you do
re-examine now because if Mr. Rampton decided that he did
not want to ask Ms. Hovi any more questions, it would be a
bit daft if she had to be called back for some
re-examination.

MR. RAMPTON: I would have to accept that if I was going to ask
leave to call rebuttal evidence, I would have to continue
my cross-examination.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You would have to continue your
cross-examination, finish it, and then Ms. Steel and
Mr. Morris would be able to re-examine further.

MR. RAMPTON: That is right.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes. Is five minutes long enough?

MR. MORRIS: I think so.

(Short Adjournment).
