Day 269 - 25 Jun 96 - Page 70

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Certainly they did not this morning because
it is quite clear that what you are holding has lots of
figures in which should been produced some considerable
time ago if you were going to look into them. Why not put
put COMA 46 and see if Professor Crawford does not agree
       with it?
       A. Page 42?

  MR. RAMPTON: Yes?
       A. I am quite happy to. The major rise was without doubt
in the, after the last world war.

  Q. Yes.
       A. Page 42.

  Q. Page 42, figure 25A?
       A. I am in the wrong book I apologise.

  Q. It is the cardiovascular one you need?
       A. Yes.

  Q. And the first chart or table, or graph gives figures for
deaths per hundred thousand population for males under 65?
       A. Yes.

  Q. In other words, what one might call premature deaths?
       A. Yes.

  Q. There is a gap between 78 and 79 because there was a change
in classification but when they got it going again in 1979,
poor old Scotland and Ireland did not do very well because
they start from a high point, but they all, whether
Scottish,, Irish or Welsh or English were all males under
65, suffering less and less, and markedly less of a risk of
premature death from heart disease, are not they?
       A. Yes.

  Q. I mean, it starts in 79 at around about, does it not 140
       people, men per hundred thousand?
       A. Yes. If you look at the -- my Lord it is my fault for
not having this British Heart Foundation document available
to the Court because I 'phoned the British Heart Foundation
up and asked them what the statistics were. They told me
verbally and all of a sudden this book appeared through my
       letter box two days ago.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Are you suggesting that it is actually
       different to these?
       A. No. It is not different, but it gives a perspective
of the rise from the beginning of the, a much earlier
       period.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes?
       A. When you look at that you see the rise going up towards
       and-

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I do not think Mr. Rampton is disputing
       that; is that so?
       A. Yes.
