Day 246 - 09 May 96 - Page 64

  Q. Of McDonald's?
       A. Can I have a quick peek? (Handed).

  Q. I am going to read out one section to see if you...
       A. I remember it. It must be some time ago, though.

  Q. It has been?
       A. April 94. It is familiar but I...

  Q. Do not worry.
       A. I recall little more than that.

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Thank you.

MR. MORRIS: Sorry, can I have it back -- no, you have it. That
is fair enough. I have a copy. Yes, in section 7 of that
       leaflet?
       A. Section 7.

  Q. Section 7. It says, "No more CFCs. Since 1988 we have
only used CFC-free materials in our packaging. You will
see the CFC-free stamp on all our foam packaging. All
refrigeration and air conditioning systems are carefully
maintained by approved contractors following industry
guidelines for the use of disposable CFCs". Is that
       paragraph all true?
       A. Yes.

  Q. Yes. Do you happen to know if, in the USA, McDonald's
intend to phase out CFC usage in their refrigerants?
       A. I think there are global guidelines on the phasing out
of CFCs in refrigeration systems. About the only place
they have not -- I am guessing again, I should not do that
-- but household refrigerators were given absolution,
I thought. Most everything commercial had to phase out via
-- was it the Montreal protocol?

  Q. Do you happen to know if the refrigeration used by
McDonald's in their transport and stores, CFCs, has been
       faced out now or not?
       A. This is in the US?

  Q. In the US?
       A. I think they all have been but, again, you have to ask
someone other than me for the answer to that one for sure.

  Q. But they are still using it in the UK?
       A. Our refrigeration systems conform to the law.

  Q. Right. But they still use CFCs at the moment. According
to go that leaflet it implies that, so... Was that April
       1994, that leaflet?
       A. Well, we do what industry guidelines for the use and
disposable of CFCs say. When a compressor goes out of a
piece of equipment they are under instructions to return it
to one that is of the approved via the Montreal protocol
guidelines. If it is working, I think they have let them
run but as they fulfil their useful life they go.
