Day 203 - 12 Jan 96 - Page 34
systematic way?
A. I am not sure that there was a pattern. I am not sure
that there was anything systematic about it. Everything
that was plain to see was dealt with because the
information there said that X person has worked until this
time and then that has been changed to an earlier time.
That was as plain as plain can be. That was then addressed
with the crew person and reimbursed to that crew person if
it was true that they had worked and not been paid.

I do not see that any pattern emerged. In fact, it was
very difficult to get the full information from the records
in the store, because there was a persistent problem with
the filing and storage of the clock card files and the
information pertaining to the clock card files.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: How far back could you look? I mean,
I forget the name of the documents I have been shown; no
doubt someone will remind me. All one has to do is look at
one sheet of paper ---
A. Yes.

Q. -- and then at another sheet of paper for the same period,
and one can see that the hours on the second sheet are
shorter than the hours on the first, so that a person is
paid, say, two hours less.
A. In all honesty, I did not -- I mean, I cannot
remember. I guess I would have looked back as far as the
information stated that there was this issue going on, and
then -----

Q. The trouble I have with that at the moment -- let me put it
to you, because there may be an answer -- if you asked the
actual crew to remember back, things being what they are,
they are going to remember back only for a very limited
period. If you have documentation which goes back, say,
six months or a year, someone, if they had thought it
important enough, could check back through all that
documentation and see whether in fact this had been going
on for a year or 18 months or two years or three years, or
whatever.
A. Well -----

Q. If the documentation is there, first of all, that would be
possible, would it not?
A. Yes, if the documentation was there.

Q. Secondly, it occurs to me, it is a serious enough matter
for many companies to want to find out just how long it has
been going on for.
A. Well, I mean, I cannot recall specific details but,
from my recollection, I looked back as far as the
information that was available to tell me that this
was -----

Q. The documentary information?
A. The documentation. There is quite a lot of information
that is retained, and over a period of a month we keep
every day's audit adjustment file. There is quite a
considerable amount of information. My memory of it was
