Day 005 - 04 Jul 94 - Page 62

     1 Q. Right.
              A. Maybe the pub trade does; I have no idea.
     2
         Q. Do crew members work hard?
3 A. But I think everyone at McDonald's works hard.

4 Q. If people want to earn, say, an average wage -- I do not
know what that would be -- £150 a week or £200 a week, is
5 it true that they would not really be able to do so at
              McDonald's as a crew member?
6 A. I am sure we have some people who work 40 hours a week
and earn in the £4.00 to £5.00 pounds an hour range over
7 the width and breadth of our 32,000 employee system.
I would be surprised if there were not some out there in
8 one capacity or another who did not get the £150 or more.

9 Q. But the majority would not be able to earn that figure; it
              just would not be possible?
10 A. Well, the majority are not interested in working that
kind of hours a week. The majority of them are part-time
11 school leavers interested in being employed somewhere
between 10 and 25 hours a week, so it never comes into
12 question. They have limited time available. They want to
use that time to supplement their income or save for,
    13 maybe, a holiday.

14 Q. So what you are saying is that your jobs are certainly not
considered as typical jobs, are they?
15 A. What do you mean by "typical"?

16 MR. JUSTICE BELL: What are you trying to get at? Are you
suggesting that you could not really work for McDonald's
17 as a crew member and earn a living, for instance?

18 MR. MORRIS: It would be unusual to. For the majority of your
staff, it is not possible for them, for example, to pay
19 all the bills themselves or raise a whole family?
              A. The majority of our part-time people and most of our
20 people are, I suppose, under 21, or thereabouts. They are
not heads of household. They are part-time employees, in
21 many cases working for the very first time, trying to
bridge their education years to employment years; they
22 have a void in their life they are trying to fill and earn
some money. They are not heads of households, that is
    23 correct.

24 Q. So, in general, you are saying they do not need the kind
of money which other people may need?
25 A. I did not say that. All I said is they are not heads
of households. What they need is a matter purely for them
26 as individuals. They have to decide what they want to do.

27 Q. In your opinion and experience, have employees at
McDonald's expressed concern that they would like more
    28 wages, high wages?
              A. Not to me, but But I think most people -- myself
29 included -- have probably thought we are under paid at
some time in our lives. I can always use a dollar or two,
30 a pence or two more. I am not sure I have ever been paid
              totally what I am worth.
