Day 005 - 04 Jul 94 - Page 44
1 tonnes, would it be quite reasonable to say that some kind
of percentage of that, substantial percentage, would end
2 up on the streets because of irresponsible people, for
example?
3 A. Some part would, no doubt, end up on the street.
4 Q. One per cent? Ten per cent?
A. I could not begin to fathom a guess.
5
MR. JUSTICE BELL: Let me ask you: Do you know what proportion
6 of your sales are take-aways as opposed to eat on the
premises?
7 A. In the United Kingdom, it is about a third taken away.
8 Q. More in the States if you include driving outputs?
A. Maybe slightly higher there, but I am not sure.
9
MR. MORRIS: A third of your restaurants in this country now
10 are drive ins, 40 out of 120?
A. It could be; I am not sure, around that somewhere.
11
Q. It is growing, the number of drive-ins is now expanding?
12 A. We are growing in every respect.
13 Q. Would you say the number of drive-ins is the most
expanding part of your sites?
14 A. Probably, yes, probably.
15 MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do you have a proportion to put to the
witness?
16
MR. MORRIS: I believe it is 140 out of 520 are drive-ins but
17 I cannot argue -----
18 MR. JUSTICE BELL: A proportion which ends up as environment/index.html">litter because
otherwise I would have thought it absolutely impossible to
19 know. I do not see how anyone can measure environment/index.html">litter.
20 MR. MORRIS: Have you ever done any surveys on the proportion
that you think ends up as environment/index.html">litter?
21 A. It hardly registers.
22 Q. On the streets rather than in bins?
A. It hardly registers.
23
Q. What do you mean "hardly registers"?
24 A. Too small to count in the scale of things. If I feed
a million people in the UK today and they all bought a
25 soft drink or a milk shake or a cup of something, I bet in
the entirety of the UK, feeding a million people, we would
26 not find, I don't know, a 100 cups, 150 cups.
27 Q. Have you ever walked down a high street in this country?
A. Many times.
28
Q. And have you ever seen any McDonald's packaging on the
29 floor on the ground?
A. Absolutely. I also see people doing the environment/index.html">litter
30 patrols picking up after it.
