Day 173 - 16 Oct 95 - Page 31

  Q. You do not know why they would be different?
       A. I cannot recall.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: There is one obvious -- Bernadette Casey, for
instance, was on £1.27 an hour on 27th March, and it looks
as if at some stage she went up 15 pence and was on £1.42.

MS. STEEL: Do you know when the list of crew members picketers
       was prepared?
       A. Sorry, which page are you referring to? The
       handwritten page, is it?

  Q. The third page.
       A. No, I do not.

  Q. The fact sheet. The Company, during the strike, put out
its own counter argument regarding what the wage rates were
and what it thought of the dispute; that is fair to say,
       yes?
       A. Can you refer me to that page, please?

  Q. The forth page.
       A. Fourth handwritten page, is it?

  Q. Yes.
       A. Sorry, your question is?

  Q. Well, it is related to that. It is not directly on this
sheet. But during the strike the Company was putting out
counter information to what the strikers were saying --
would that be fair to say -- about what rates of pay were
and whether conditions were satisfactory, etcetera?
       A. Are you talking about a Press release that we would
       have made?

  Q. Well, did the Company stay entirely silent?
       A. No, no. We issued statements to the Press.

  Q. Right. Did that include average rates of pay for crew
members -- sorry, not just for crew members -- for those on
       strike?
       A. I cannot recall the contents, unless you can refer it
to me. I can recall we issued Press releases.

  Q. Yes. Did that include contradicting or stating what you
believed the rates of pay were at the stores that were
involved in the dispute, what the average rates of pay
       were?
       A. I cannot recall the contents of what was in the Press
release. But is it in here, in this? Can you refer it to
       me, so I can -----

  Q. I am not asking for an exact figure. I am asking you
whether you recall the kind of information being put out
       about -----

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Why not make some suggestions to him?
(To the witness) Hourly rates have been suggested to you.
       A. It is possible that we put that in the Press release,
my Lord, but I cannot recall exactly what we put in the
