Day 287 - 25 Oct 96 - Page 22

MR. MORRIS: Yes. It is very hard to work out in this document
exactly -- but anyway, "let's get growing America" is
definitely on the front of it. Page 577, it has copyright
1992 McDonald's Corporation. So it is their document
anyway.

Actually, I also notice on that page, and this will no
doubt come up later on in the case, that the front of the
document says "made with recycled paper, 50 percent
pre-consumer content, 10 percent post-consumer content".
This is part of our case on --

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Which page are you on now?

MR. MORRIS: That is 577, this is the front of it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Yes.

MR. MORRIS: Again, I am not absolutely clear when that --

MR. JUSTICE BELL: You had better make your methane point, had
you not?

MR. MORRIS: Can I make the point on the recycled paper. It is
a phrase in the fact sheet, don't believe them when they
say they use recycled paper, whatever it is, only a tiny
percentage is. That says made with recycled paper, but it
is only 10 percent post-consumer content, and it is the
post-consumer content that is the important criteria, and
in America they are forced to actually identify what
percentage is post-consumer. In this country, they are
not.

Anyway, I go back to the methane point.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Page 582.

MR. MORRIS: 582, in this document of McDonald's, it says
methane, and it is in the first column at the bottom of the
first column, under greenhouse gases, types and causes,
methane responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse gases, is
directly related to population increases throughout
history. And it says: I am created by decay that occurs
in rice paddies, I am formed by decay that occurs in
landfills, I am formed in the digestive system of cattle.
And then it says: I am a natural gas commonly found in
swamps and tundras. This is actually aimed at children,
this.

But that is a recognition in their own document of the
significance of cattle in the formation of methane which is
a major contributor to greenhouse gases and the greenhouse
effect which is damaging the climate of our planet,
seriously damaging our planet to such an extent that other
environmental problems will be dwarfed in the future if
something is not done about it.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: I notice the world temperature went down last
year. What the significance, if anything, of that is, I do
