Day 269 - 25 Jun 96 - Page 28

  MR. JUSTICE BELL: Of what?

MR. MORRIS: Of useful safe level figures of fat in the diet and
saturated fat in particular and then comparisons with
McDonald's fat content, which we do not have to go into the
calculations of now, but in terms of frequency of eating
       that diet.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Quite frankly, it is too late for this. You
have got a, no doubt, carefully drafted extra statement
from Professor Crawford which you were required to obtain
in order to give notice of the additional evidence which we
would give in-chief upon his recall, which I was quite
happy that he should do before Mr. Rampton continued his
cross-examination, and you must stick to that. We have had
a fair amount of evidence on the question you are about to
ask Mr. Crawford which I will take into consideration in
due course. But I am very anxious that Mr. Crawford's
further evidence in-chief, which is what he has been giving
now, should be restricted to that which notice has been
       given in his third statement.

  MR. MORRIS: That is fine.

MS. STEEL: Is there a copy of the meaning of nutrition around?
       Do you have a copy?
       A. Sorry?

  Q. Do you have a copy of the Meaning?

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Since you were here, I have ruled on what the
leaflet actually means in this area of the case.

MS. STEEL: We did send you a copy, I think?
       A. You did. I do not know if I have it to hand.

MR. JUSTICE BELL: Do not worry. Borrow mine, Professor
       Crawford (Same handed).
       A. Thank you.

  Q. Yes. Leave the post-it on and borrow mine. That is just
one page of the transcript of the ruling I gave and the
Meaning is the insert near the top of the page.
       A. Yes.

MS. STEEL: Right. The meaning of the leaflet being that
McDonald's food is very unhealthy because it is high in
fat, sugar, animal product and salt (sodium) and low in
fibre, vitamins and minerals and because eating it may well
make your diet high in fat, sugar, animal products and salt
(sodium) and low in fibre, vitamins and minerals with the
very real risk that you will suffer cancer of the breast or
bowel with heart disease as a result.

The part up to there, would you agree with that? I do not
meaning agree with that being what the leaflet means, but
do you agree with that statement that there is a very real
risk that you will suffer cancer of the breast or bowel and
heart disease if you have a diet high in fat, sugar animal
