Organik Java Resource

Organik Trial Version

This CD contains a beta time limited version of Organik, it will time out on the 1st of July 1998. If you require a full version of the software, please contact Orbital Technologies at orders@orbital-tech.com .

The software is subject to our standard license agreement, prior to installing the server, please review the license agreement.

Instructions for installation:

Double click on the file install.bat.

You will be asked if you wish to install the Java Runtime Environment to your machine. Only the Win32 version of the JRE is supplied. If you are not using NT4, do not choose to install this JRE.

Follow the instructions in the InstallShield program, choosing whether or not to install the supplied Win32 JRE.

The Organik installation package will then start automatically. Follow the instructions in the InstallShield program, and accept all defaults. The Organik server will be installed on your machine.

If you are using NT4 the installation program will add two shortcuts to your windows Programs menu.

These are:

  • - Run Organik Server
  • - Uninstall

Run Organik Server on NT4

To run Organik, click Run Organik Server in your windows Programs menu. The server will start. In the Orbital Organik Setup window, click OK. Fill in the Registration Form and click Register. The Organik Administration Controls window will appear.

DO NOT close either the Administration window or the DOS (Command Prompt) window while Organik is running, as this will crash the server.

Wait for about 30 seconds, and then start your web browser. Log into Organik by typing http://<server name> as a URL in your Web browser (eg. Netscape Navigator or MS Internet Explorer). For example, if the Internet hostname and domain for your machine is amalthea.orbital.co.uk then type:

      http://amalthea.orbital.co.uk/

The Organik login page will then appear!

You can log in to Organik using a login and password from the list displayed under "User" in the Organik Administration Controls window. Alternatively, you can set up a new login by filling out the User Details section under User, and clicking "Add User". You MUST select at least one group from the All Groups box when you do this, as Organik cannot accept a user who belongs to no groups.

Guest Logins
This Instillation of Organik comes preseeded with information collected from Java FAQs and webpages. Organik has also been seeded with 'imaginary' users. These users can be used as guest logins. The users are listed in the administration control panel. To use these users as guest logins, the login name is the first name with password second name followed by 37. E.g. Kate Kent - username: kate password: kent37

Run Organik Server on Non-Windows Platform

Use the RUN.BAT file in the Organik installation directory as a template for comstructing a run file for your platform. Note that there are several zip files to be included in the classpath.

To run Organik, execute your run file. The server will start. In the Orbital Organik Setup window, click OK. Fill in the Registration Form and click Register. The Organik Administration Controls window will appear.

DO NOT close either the Administration window or the console window while Organik is running, as this will crash the server.

Important Note For Non-Windows Platforms

Organik has been developed on NT4 using Symantec Cafe. Some modules have been tested on other platforms (particularly Solaris). However, the current build has NOT been tested on any platforms other than NT4.

Important Note For Windows95

If you are running the Organik server on Windows95 and do not have Winsock2 installed then you may encounter a socket bug in which the socket is reset on close. This should not occur if you allow the installation script to install JRE1.1.5, or are using JRE1.1.5 or JDKs at this level or above. For more information, see the JavaSoft bug report:

Known Issues

This software is still in beta, and inevitable there are some unresolved problems. Those you might notice are:

  1. Deleting newsgroups or news-servers does not actually remove the newsgroups.
  2. Toggling email notification may cause the Java VM to crash.

  3. Some of the seed data contains HTML. We do not currently filter this fully, and this may result in strange pages when answers and relevant information is shown for some questions.
  4. Forum discussion messages are not indexed and will not be used as answers to questions.

Uninstall

This will uninstall the Organik server from your machine.
