WIDE Internet Overview

The WIDE Internet is an IP network in Japan constructed and operated by the WIDE Project to provide a communication infrastructure for computer science research communities. It provides connections to over 100 organizations, including universities and both government and industrial research organizations.

It has connections to the following Japanese regional networks as well: Japanese commercial Internet service providers, are also connected.

The WIDE Internet acts as a backbone for JUNET. Connections to commercial BBS services, such as Nifty-Serve and PC-VAN, are under experimental operation.

FUTURE

The purpose of the WIDE project is to provide network technologies which collectively enable a distributed environment in a highly integrated manner. In this sense, the WIDE Internet will continue to be a platform for research on network technologies. Satellite communication and mobile computing are under active research, as well as issues in security, protocols, administration, datalink technology, education, and more.
