PROFILE OF EKIN

EKIN - THE LIGHT AND DARKNESS OF HIS LIFE
After the fake painting incident, Ekin's works were completely burnt down under the then local government's order, and Ekin began to live in a dark world that is quite different from his former life. Unfortunately, none of the pictures Ekin painted during the time of light as an exclusive painter for the local government have been found so far. After the purge, Ekin was prohibited to draw"Kano School"style pictures. Therefore, we can see Ekin as an orthodox painter with glories only in"Hakubyo-ga"(pictures drawn with black ink alone), which he didn't aim to show in public.

EKIN, THE PAINTER OUT OF OFFICE
After ten years' mysterious blank, Ekin appeared again in Tosa (present Kochi) not as a glorious"Kano School"painter, but as an illustrater who painted Shibai-e in glotesque and fantastic manners. Although he had a great talent in arts, Ekin became a sinner. However, people of Kochi, who had a unique character of anti-Establishment, enthusiastically supported his pictures. Thanks to their support, Ekin energetically devoted himself to creative activities and left many works such as Byobu-e, Fusuma-e, Ema-chochin.
