SEKINO'S REPORT
THE SOUTHERN ANDES
In 1951, this region had no roads. Because this is near the Argentinean border, there are close relations with Argentina. An Argentinean merchant has come to do business. They also go to Argentina to buy provisions, which takes 2 weeks. They use the currency from Argentina. There are no "customs."

Each time we met a settler, we asked why they had decided to emigrated to Patagonia. Most respond that they came "to seek mejor vida ( a better life)." These people had come here to seek out their dreams. We couldn't help but think of the aborigines of the region. These newcomers to the continent oppressed the aborigines, and drove them out of their homeland to emigrate elsewhere. The aborigines are now on the verge of extinction.
