DZ/Log Overview [Page 01]
DZ/log was developed to allow multiple amateur radio operators to
use a common software product while maintaining individual databases
for each call sign. Any comments or enhancement suggestions are
welcome. Address all comments to:
DAVID KYLEN, AA3DZ
6302 AUBURN DRIVE

This is a shareware version of the DZ/Log program but allows full
functionality including the creation of multiple databases, log prints,
and W.A.S (Worked All States) statistics.
An expanded version, including world statistics and field day logging
is available to registered users.
To register, complete the following order form and return to the above

DZ/Log Overview [Page 02]
GETTING STARTED...
The first time you run DZ/Log, the system will initialize the CONFIG
file. This file allows you, the SYSTEM ADMINSTRATOR, to add "USERS" to
the DZ/Log system. Before you or any of your "USERS" can start logging
contacts, you must enter DZ/Log (login) as the "SUPER USER" and add
any "USERS" to the user file.
This file allows you to assign individual file names to the QSL and
FIELD DAY logging files for a specific call ("USER") along with setting
up access passwords you each "USER".
Lets assume that you want to setup AA3DZ as a valid user with a
password of "XXXX".
At the login window, use "SYSTEM" as the callsign and "ADMIN" as the
password. This will allow you into DZ/Log as the super user. At this
point, press F10 (User File). The User File control window will
display allowing you to enter the user and setup his/her file names.
Press F2 (Add) to add a user.
Example: AA3DZ for Callsign
XXXX for Password
YYYY for Initials (optional - user initials)
AA3DZ.QSL for QSL logging file name
AA3DZ.FDL for FIELD DAY logging file name
C:\CALLBK\CALL.DAT for CALLBOOK file location
(NOTE: USE YOUR CALL SIGN IF YOU ARE SETTING UP FOR YOURSELF)
Once done, press F10 to file the user entry, and then F1 to return
to the main menu.
AA3DZ is now setup to access the DZ/Log program and start logging
contacts.
Assuming that you set yourself up for logging, press F5 (Login Screen)
and log back in with your call (i.e. AA3DZ).
You are now ready to log your contacts.

Building the CALLBOOK database from the QRZ CD.
Since DZ/Log uses indexed file structures to access information from
the on-line callbook, it is necessary to build an indexed version of
the callbook from the QRZ CD to a disk file. This file should reside
in a directory named C:\CALLBK. Before you run the Build CALLBOOK
option (F4), make sure that you have created a directory named
CALLBK on your hard drive.
To build the callbook, you must have the QRZ CD, a CDROM drive, and
at least 80MB of free space on your hard drive.
Assuming that the above is true, simply place the QRZ CD in the drive,
and press F4. DZ/Log will read the data from the CD ROM and build a
file called CALL.DAT in the directory C:\CALLBK.
*** WARNING ***
There are over 600,000 calls on the CD ROM and this build program
can take up to 22 hours to run depending on the speed of your CDROM
drive and computer. You only have to run this program when you get
an updated QRZ CD ROM, so start it on a weekend and have fun the
rest of the year.
Once complete, the callbook is accessable to DZ/Log. If the callbook
is active, DZ/Log will automatically lookup calls upon entry and
fill in the QSL information for entry into your logs.
Another nice feature in DZ/Log is the search fearure (F8 in QSL Log).
This allows you to update your logs once you have the callbook built by
accessing the on-line callbook and updating your contact database with
the current information. If you do not have a CDROM drive, your can
still enter contacts and then update the log based on the callbook
when you upgrade to CD.

General DZ/Log Procedures.
Once logged into you call, select F2 (QSL Log). This will access the
QSL Logging screen for your database.
The logging screen is controlled by function keys and a function key
selection window will display inthe lower righthand corner.
The top 3 lines of the screen displays which database is active and
the function key menu. Here is a brief description of the function
key options.
F1 - BACKUP OR EXIT
The F1 key will back you out of the current function or
exit to the operating system from the main menu. If you are
not sure of an entry or want to quit what you are doing,
simply press F1 on any field.
F2 - ADD INFORMATION
The F2 key puts DZ/LOG into "add" mode and accepts information
until the F10 key is pressed. (F10 is the DZ/LOG Verify key.)
F3 - RETRIEVE/MODIFY INFORMATION
The F3 key puts DZ/LOG into "modify" mode. After entering the
desired CALLSIGN and pressing enter, a search routine will
lookup the next 10 log entries from that point. You may then
use the Up or Down Arrows to highlight a desired entry. Once
highlighted, press return to access to desired record. You
may at this point change (modify) any data on the screen. To
save the data, simply press F10 (Verify). to exit without
modification, press F1 (Exit). Upon filing (F10) of data, the
next record in sequence will appear for review/modification.
this allows you to scan thru the database without having to use
the lookup screen.
F4 - DELETE
The F4 key puts DZ/LOG into retrieve/delete mode. This function
performs just like F3 except it will delete the displayed
information when the F10 (Verify) key is pressed.
F5 - STATS
The F5 Key will perform a STATES WORKED function that will
scan all log entries and report which states contacts have been
made along with the total number of contacts for each state.
You can also choose a specific mode (i.e. RTTY, SSB, etc).
F6 - PRINT
The F6 key allows you to print your log data in a format
suitable for entry into a 3-ring binder. NOTE: ALL QSL LOG
PRINTS ARE IN 132 COLUMN FORMAT AND REQUIRE YOU TO HAVE YOUR
PRINTER IN COMPRESSED MODE IF WORKING WITH AN 80 COLUMN
PRINTER! Multiple report sequences and selection ranges are
available. The first window will allow selection of the report
sequence (primary sort value). Once highlighted, press F10 to
select and then enter the data range selections. Press F10
again to start printing the log.
F7 - HELP
The F7 key displays this information. (as you now know!).
DZ/Log Overview [Page 05]
F8 - SEARCH
The F8 key will read every one of your log records and try to
match it against the CALL.DAT callbook database. If found,
your log entries are automatically updated based on the latest
callbook. This allows you to enter contacts, even though you
might not have the callbook loaded on your drive, and then
at a later time, update your logs based on the callbook when
it is available. Also keeps your logs current when new releases
of the callbook are issued. You can specify to updata all log
entries, or just those who have blank addresses.
F9 - LOOKUP
The F9 Key allow access to the callbook for informational
lookup purposes only. Allow access to callbook without
being in "add" mode (F2).
F10 - VERIFY
The F10 key is the standard (default) verify key in DZ/LOG.
Pressing this key is like saying "It is OK to save this data"
or "Delete this record". The F1 key is just the opposite.
