PC Log is a computerized Amateur Radio/SWL log book program for IBM PC/XT/AT
and compatible computers. Ease of use was a major design goal of PC Log.
The format of PC Log is similar to spreadsheet programs like Lotus 1-2-3.
Simply move the cursor to the cell you want to fill in using the cursor keys
and type the desired information.
Installation.
There are no special installation procedures for PC Log. Copy the file
LOG.EXE to the disk you wish to use. Each log entry (a log entry is one
entire line from the log book) requires 84 bytes so a blank floppy disk could
hold about 4000 log entries. When you run PC Log the first time, it creates
a file called LOG.DAT to hold the log entries. If you move the program to
a new disk or directory, be sure to copy both LOG.EXE and LOG.DAT to the new
directory.
Running the program.
To run the program, change to the directory/drive which contains PC Log and
type LOG and Enter. Note: PC Log uses the date and time functions of your
computer. Make sure the date and time have been set using the DOS DATE and
TIME commands (or some other program if you are using a hardware clock). If
you like to maintain your log in UTC, you can also use the DATE and TIME
to set your computer's clock to UTC.
The first time you run the program, PC Log will ask for your callsign. PC
Log then creates the file LOG.DAT to store your callsign and your log
entries.
After you enter your callsign, PC Log displays the left half of a log book on
the screen. All the fields commonly found in Amateur Radio log books are
displayed on this screen. To make an entry in the log book, use the cursor
keys to move the cursor to the cell you wish to fill in and type the required
information. You can also use the Enter key to move to the next cell to the
right and the PgUp and PgDn commands to move the cursor entire pages up or
down. If you want to change existing log entries, simply move the cursor
to the cell you wish to change and type the new information.
When you move the cursor to the COMMENTS field, PC Log will display the right
side of the log book including the entire COMMENTS field. Typing Enter or
using the cursor keys to move the cursor left will cause PC Log to display
the left side of the log book again.
To end PC Log press the F10 key and your log entries will be saved and the
program will return you to DOS.
The following paragraphs discuss the use of special function keys.
F1 - Display Function Key Summary.
Pressing F1 will display a list of all the function keys used by PC Log.
Pressing and other key will return you to PC Log.
F2 - Insert Date at Current Cursor Location.
Pressing the F2 key will insert the present date, as known to the computer,
at the point where the cursor is currently located. Although this function
is useful for filling in the Date field, it can also be used in any other
field wide enough to to hold the eight character date.
F3 - Insert Time at Current Cursor Location.
Pressing the F3 key will insert the present time, as known to the computer,
at the point where the cursor is currently located. Although this function
is useful for filling in the Time On and Time Off fields, it can also be used
in any other field wide enough to to hold the eight character time.
F4 - Change Log Owner's Callsign.
If you change your callsign, or if the callsign you entered when you first
ran the PC Log was incorrect, pressing the F4 key will allow you to change
you callsign.
F5 - Search for Callsign or Comment String.
Function key F5 allows you to search your log book for particular callsigns
or for information entered in the comment field like names, countries,
states, etc. After you press F5, you will be asked whether you want to
search for a callsign or a string in the comment field. To search for call-
signs, type 1 otherwise type 2 for a comment field search. You will then
be asked for the callsign or comment field string you wish to locate. You
don't have to enter the entire callsign or comment field string. For
example, to search for all Canadian callsign entries beginning with VE3,
type VE3 and Enter. To locate VE3ABC specifically, type VE3ABC. Any portion
of the callsign or comment field string may be entered. The more letters you
enter, the more specific the search. The search begins with the log entry
following the one where the cursor is currently located. If the search is
unsuccessful, a message is displayed. Pressing any key will return you to
PC Log.
F6 - Repeat Last Search.
To repeat the search previously made, press the F6 key. Each time you press
F6 key, the next occurance of the callsign or comment string field used in
the previous search is located. If no other occurances are found, the first
occurance is displayed again.
F7 - Print Log Book Page or Entire Log Book.
Pressing F7 will allow you to print entries from your log book on the printer
connected to LPT1. (Note: LPT1 can be redirected to COM1 or COM2 using the
DOS MODE command if you have a serial printer. See your DOS manual for
details). If you wish to print only the page the cursor is currently located
on, type 1. If you wish to print the entire logbook, type 2. The requested
information will printed and you will be returned to PC Log.
F10 - End PC Log and Return to DOS
You should press F10 to end PC Log before turning your computer off to ensure
that your most recent log entries have been saved properly.
