BOXED IN SPACE
Another Game Of Forethought And Strategic Design

What Is Boxed In Space?
Boxed In Space is an original computer game created by Jim Radcliffe.
Solving the puzzles presented by this game will require advance thought on
your part and the ability to think in a slightly devious manner.
What's The Object Of Boxed In Space?
You must clear all of the colored boxes from the board in a brief period of
time, 300 seconds or 5 minutes. You accomplish this by placing each of the
colored boxes over a docking tile of the same color as the box and then
deselecting the box. The concept is simple but the execution will drive you
nuts and you will curse me for creating this game. My co-workers are already
thinking of placing a contract on me.
While you are under the gun to beat the clock, you may work on any puzzle
you wish. There is no set order or levels to be conquered in Boxed In Space.
How To Play Boxed In Space
The concept of Boxed In Space is simple. There are X number of colored boxes
on a game board and a corresponding docking position for each box. Select a
box by moving the selector box over the desired box and then press the space
bar. Use the curosr keys to manipulate it to its' dock, then deselect it.
The box will disappear and be replaced by what appears to be a stone barrier.
The barriers are impassable so make sure you don't get yourself boxed in.
Careful though, once you set a box in motion it will not stop movement in the
direction you selected until it hits another box or some other object
on the board. Some of the objects can be harmful to your health.
There are a number of ways that various objects combine to defeat your
steering of the selected box. Play with the puzzles until you have a grasp
of how the various objects interact. Then solve em before the time runs out.
The arrows will force you to travel in the direction they are pointing if
you run into or cross one from ANY direction.
The golden orbs will stop your movement BUT they will also send you back
one space on the board. This can sometimes be quite helpful.
The Transformers will change a box from one color to the next when it is
crossed by a selected box. You will need to figure out the transformation
sequence yourself.
The Transporters will transport your selected box from one location to
another. It is up to you to figure out the transport pattern. If you enter
a Transporter traveling from left to right, you will exit the destination
Transporter traveling left to right. Remember this! You have been warned.
In addition, if a box arrives on a transporter and has no where to go, it
will remain on the transporter...blocking other boxes from using that
particular transporter.
And what game would be complete without something to blow you up if you
should run into it. Yes, it's a bomb. Crude but effective. Try to avoid
them because once you hit one, the puzzle can not be completed, even though
you can still move other boxes around.
With just these few objects you can create incredibly complex puzzles for
others to solve. When I started working on the game concept I wanted
something that was simple but had the potential for complexity and extreme
difficulty at the same time. I think you will agree that the puzzles
you get with Boxed In Space offer a wide range of difficulty.
Creating Your Own Boxed In Space Puzzles
There are thousands of people with better ideas for more devious, hard to
solve, puzzles than any I could create. These people may not know how to
write a game program but they have the intelligence to create some great
puzzles for all of us to solve if they are given the opportunity.
I work with a man that doesn't know how to write a single line of computer
code but the toughest puzzles included with Boxed In Space were created by
this guy. The guy is a writer and poet. His name is James Mardis and he has
one twisted mind. This man has taken great delight in staying up til the
wee small hours of the morning creating puzzles I can't solve. I have made
him solve every one of them for me just to make sure he wasn't trying to
drive me crazy by creating an unsolvable puzzle.
I've made it easy for people like James by including a game editor within
the game itself. With this game editor you will be able to create your own
twisted, devious, tormenting, time wasting, frustrating, but neat puzzles!
And now you too can say..."OK wise guy, solve this one!"
The Share Ware version of Boxed In Space has limited editing capabilities
but you will still be able to create some really tough puzzles. If you
decide to register your copy of Boxed In Space, you will receive the latest
version of the program and an editor without any limitations. I'll even
tell you how to turn off the clock so you can take all the time you want
to solve your puzzles.
To activate the editor, bring up any puzzle and then press the E key.
On the right side of the screen a number of game tiles and associated
letters will appear. Pressing the letter associated with a tile places
that tile on the screen at the current location of your selector box.
To clear the screen press F1 and the entire screen will become.........
"Space....the final frontier." You can then enter whatever tiles you wish
to form your own puzzle.
Note: If any puzzle contains a no edit tile, you will not be able to edit
it. If you save a puzzle with a no edit tile and find that you made
a mistake in your design, you will have to start all over. Even you
will not be able to edit the puzzle once it contains a no edit tile.
To save your puzzle press F10 and enter a name for the puzzle. You are
limited to names up to eight letters in length. The names you give your
puzzles must follow the same conventions that DOS uses for file names.
Limitations Of The Share Ware Version.
The Share Ware version of Boxed In Space contains an editor with limited
features. You will still be able to create many enjoyable and tough puzzles
but all of the features of the editor will not be available to you. You will
be able to work on and solve any puzzles made with the non Share Ware version
as well as the Share Ware version of Boxed In Space.
