TROUBLESHOOTING
CAN I RUN THE DARK EYE ON A MACHINE THAT ONLY HAS 8 MB OF RAM?
We have successfully tested the game on machines with 8 MB of RAM; however, it is possible that the game will not run smoothly on an 8 MB machine if most of that memory is devoted to your system software. There are two solutions to this problem.
A long-term solution is adding more memory to your machine. As multimedia titles increasingly become memory intensive, 8 MB is rapidly becoming inadequate to support both games and complex system software.
Another solution involves reconfiguring your system settings. Make sure Virtual Memory is enabled and your swap file size is at least 4MB for Windows 3.1. For Windows 95, you should choose to let Windows manage your Virtual Memory setting. Your PC should have at least 8MB of RAM installed in order to run The Dark Eye properly.
Be sure to turn off all unnecessary TSRs before running The Dark Eye, including non-Windows Desktop Manager programs.
For information on how to use the control panels, please consult your hardware user manuals.
I'M EXPERIENCING TROUBLE WITH THE VIDEO.
Set your display to High Color (65,000 colors or 16 bit).
If you are using a third party video display card, please refer to your user's manual to be sure it is operating properly.
Please refer to the QuickTimeT for Windows Read Me file that was installed on your hard drive during installation.

Video Cards for Director 4.04 for Windows
November 1994
VIDEO CARDS
Director requires video software drivers and hardware that fully support Windows 3.1 standards. The following video systems have been tested and found to be compatible with Director during authoring and playback. We recommend installing the latest available video ROM and software. Contact the video card manufacturer for information.
Authoring and playback are not limited to these systems. If you experience difficulties with a card that is not on this list, first test it at 640 x 480 resolution with the monitor's color depth set to 8 bit (256 colors). Next, contact the hardware manufacturer to find out if the problem has been addressed with an updated driver.
The following cards have been tested and provide acceptable results for authoring and playback:

Sound Cards for Director 4.04 for Windows
November 1994
SOUND CARDS
The following sound cards have been tested and are compatible with Director:
Compaq Business Audio
Creative Labs SoundBlaster
Creative Labs SoundBlaster Pro
Creative Labs SoundBlaster 16
Creative Labs SoundBlaster AWE32
Gateway 2000
IBM M-Audio *
MediaVision ProAudio Spectrum
MediaVision ProAudio Spectrum 16
MediaVision ProAudio Spectrum 16 Pro
Microsoft Windows SoundSystem Version 1
Microsoft Windows SoundSystem Version 2
Orchid SoundWave 32
Reveal Forte 16
Roland Rap-10
*IBM computers that have the M-Audio sound card should use driver version 1.3 or higher for best results. Older versions of this driver don't play all sounds in Director or AVI movies. The version 1.3 driver did not pass the 16-bit sounds test for Director. Testing revealed that 8-bit sounds are corrupted when played after a 16-bit sound. At the time these release notes were written, version 1.3 (dated 1/10/94) was the most recent driver available from IBM.
I'M STILL HAVING PROBLEMS GETTING THE CD-ROM TO OPERATE PROPERLY. WHAT'S MY NEXT STEP?
If none of the above steps helped, and you believe that the game play performance is suffering due to your hardware, you can contact the following hardware manufacturers:
