in Mah Jongg -V-G-A- Version 2.0
A new features summary for current users of MJVGA Version 1,1.
The Mah Jongg -V-G-A- program and documentation are
Copyright 1989 Ron balewski
Note:
If you're a new user of Mah Jongg -V-G-A-, *PLEASE* read the primary
instruction manual found in MJVGA20.DOC. This update summary is meant
only for players who are familiar with MJVGA Version 1.1 and as such
does NOT document ANY of the features found in that version.
SPECIAL
=======
The Info button has been replaced by a Special button. Whenever
you click on Special, you'll open another sub-menu of seldom-used
commands on the left side of the screen. The commands are as follows:
BACKGND
=======
The BACKGND button will let you change the background color
of the MJVGA screen. When you click on BACKGND, another
window will open showing three bar graphs -- one for each
of the primary colors red, green, and blue. You can add or
subtract any color by clicking on its UP or DOWN button.
Each click will raise / lower the color one "notch." If you
hold the center button down while clicking, the color will be
raised / lowered by ten "notches."
The color that you select will remain in effect as long as
the game is in operation. However, the change will NOT be
permanent. It will be lost qhen you quit MJVGA. To make a
permanent change, you must use The Draftsman.
INFO...
=======
Just like in Version 1.1.
DOS Shell
=========
This will return you to a temporary DOS prompt. Type EXIT
at the prompt to return to the game.
Sound
=====
The Sound button will toggle on and off the new sound
effects in MJVGA Version 2.0.
Timer
=====
This will toggle the new timer display on and off. When the
display is off, the timer will continue to run. You can,
therefore, turn it on at any point in the game and get an
accurate reading of the time.
Clicking on any of the sub-functions will execute the function,
then close the sub-function menu. If you'd like to close the
menu without executing one of the sub-functions, just click the
right mouse button.
New Game
========
If you hold down the right mouse button while you click on New
Game, you'll repeat the current game from the beginning.
What's Left
===========
If you high-light a tile before selecting What's Left, you'll
only be given a message on the left side of the screen which
tells you how many of the selected tile are left. If you
selected a season or flower, you'll be told how many seasons /
flowers are left.
Help
====
If you click on Help while holding in the right mouse button,
you'll only be given a message which tells you how many moves (if
any) are left. You will not be shown any of them -- you'll have
to find them yourself!
If you high-light a tile before selecting Help, you'll be shown
only the moves which include that value of tile. If no moves are
available with the high-lighted tile, you'll be so informed.
ATTENTION THREE_BUTTON MOUSE USERS:
There are some short-cuts in effect for you. You can enter the
Help sub-system from the game by just tapping the center mouse
button. Holding down the right button while tapping the center
will give you the abbreviated help described above.
You can step to next / previous moves by clicking the right /
center mouse buttons. You can exit the help sub-system by
pressing the center and right buttons simultaneously.
COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
Mah Jongg -V-G-A- v2.0 will accept five different command line
options -- S, T, M, and D. The purpose of each is as follows:
S - Begin the game with sound off
T - Begin the game with the timer display off
M - Begin the game with messages off
D - Disables the dual-monitor feature. No data will be written to
the monochrome monitor. Normally this feature can be ignored
-- even if you don't have a monochrome monitor connected.
However, if you're multi-tasking your computer (under DESQview,
for example) and using the monochrome monitor as a second DOS
environment, you won't want MJVGA to use that screen.
F - Read PAL.CFG and all .ICN files from another disk or
subdirectory. Some examples:
f=a: <== This reads all files from drive A:
f=E:\MJVGA\TILES2\ <== Reads tiles from E:\mjvga\tiles2
Note that all subdirectory references MUST be terminated with a
backslash (as above).
Any of these options (except for re-enabling the monochrome monitor) can
be changed once the game is started. These options simply control the
position of these switches when the game starts. They let you set up
the game to your liking without having to click on buttons once the game
starts.
The parameters must be single letters separated by a space. They
can be entered in any order.
Here are a couple of examples. Suppose you'd like to start the
game with Messages turned off. The command would be:
MJVGA M
To start a game with all the options turned off, you'd type:
MJVGA S T M
The S, T, M, and D can be in any order.
