ABOUT EUCHRE
This program was written in Turbo C v2.0, and it took about a month to
complete. The sole purpose of this game is make the card game of Euchre
enjoyable with only one person available. Your partner is a computer
player and so are your opponents. The computer doesn't cheat! (Unless its
a programming error!!!)
This program runs 320x200x256 VGA graphics and should be executed from a
hard drive to increase speed. The program does not use a mouse or
joystick - only the keyboard. Also, the game uses a lot of bitmapped
animation, so a computer slower than a 286 won't run the game very well.
Actually, I saw it run on a 286, and it didn't look too good on that
either!
INSTALLATION
Installing Euchre is very easy. Simply put all the files into one
directory and run the program EUCHRE.EXE. Euchre will not run unless all
files are present in the same directory. These files are:
EUCHRE.EXE
GAMESCRN.VGA
INSTRUCT.DOC
RESRCE1.VGA
RESRCE2.VGA
RESRCE3.VGA
RESRCE4.VGA
RESRCE5.VGA
THE MAIN MENU
The menuing systems in this game are straight forward arrow key-driven
menus using the Up/Down arrows to select each option. Also, an option can
be selected by pressing the highlighted letter in the option you want to
choose.
The first option in the main menu is PLAY GAME. This is self-explanatory.
It simply goes into a game of Euchre. Your hand is the cards displayed at
the bottom of the screen, and your partner is sitting directly across from
you.
The menu's second option is CONFIGURATION. This option is a sub-menu
which controls game speed, the points played up to, and sound.
The third menu option is INSTRUCTIONS. This option will simply call up
this file and read it out on the screen. Press the <ESCAPE> key in order
to stop reading the file, and press <ENTER> to continue on to the next
page.
The final option is QUIT GAME. This will immediately exit you from the
game.
THE CONFIGURATION MENU
This menu's first option is GAME SPEED. This option controls the speed
of the animation and the delay of each player's speech and movements. A
value of 1 would be no delay at all thus being the fastest. This game was
made on a 486DX / 33 and used a speed of about 45. Choose a speed which
shows fairly smooth game play, and allows enough time to read each
player's messages.
The second menu option is POINTS. This option will control what number of
points you want to play up to. I usually play up to 10, but I find that
not all people do it that way!
The third option toggles the sound. There isn't a lot of sound in the
game because it was very difficult to put in due to all the delays,
frame animation, and counters in the program. SO - whatever sound there
is, you can turn it on and off!!!
The final option, EXIT MENU, just takes you back to the main menu.
NOTES ABOUT EUCHRE
One thing to remember about the program is that whenever you are playing a
game, you can always hit the <ESCAPE> key to call up the main menu. BUT,
when you do this, it will end the game you were currently playing.
The dealer for a new game is chosen randomly by the computer.
This file is not a tutorial on how to play euchre, it simply explains how
to run this program properly. If you want a tutorial - download the BASIC
euchre game call Four Hand Euchre. This will give you a nice little
tutorial - but the game isn't too hot!
A couple of special key-combonations will do some interesting things:
1. Press CTRL-X to toggle the poster on the wall
2. Press CTRL-Z to watch your partner get busy!!!
When you are in this loop, hit any key (except
CTRL-Z) to get out of hit. You may have to hit
a key several times!
I would like to thank everyone who wrote in telling me of all the errors
I didn't find early on! I LOVE hearing from people about the game. SO,
if you write to me and tell me how you liked the game - I'll send you
an expanded, laser-printed manual, the current release of the game, AND
a supplement to the game which will enhance your viewing pleasure FOR
FREE!!! yes, i said FREE ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
That's about it - enjoy!
