Macromedia xRes 3 SD Read me
October 1996

The Macromedia xRes which accompanies this Read Me file is a Demo version.  All save features have
been disabled.  To order the full version please call Macromedia at 1-800-457-1774.

This ReadMe includes late-breaking news about third-party plug-in filters, file formats, and documentation
corrections.

USING PLUG-IN FILTERS
The following plug-ins have been successfully tested with
Macromedia xRes:
-KPT 3.0, by Meta Tools
-KPT 2.1, by Meta Tools
-Terrazo, by Xaos Tools
-TypeCaster, by Xaos Tools
-Paint Alchemy, by Xaos Tools

USING KPT FILTERS
When you use the Angular Shapeburst in the KPT Gradient Designer, xRes applies the filter as a
rectangular shapeburst.

Use KPT on RGB files to make sure that previews are correct. Previews of CMYK files may not be correct.

If you are using the KPT SE Macromedia Edition of Kai's Power Tools,
press the Help button on the filter dialogs to get online help.

(Windows only): KPT sometimes crashes when you click the movie icon in KPT Interform 3.0. If this
happens, press Continue Execution, Control-Tab, and Alt-Control-Delete, and end execution of xRes.
Delete the file KP3_IF.prs in the KPT folder so that KPT filters can run again.

HARDWARE COMPATIBILITY:

MICROTEK SCAN WIZARD
If you're using the Microtek Scan Wizard, the dialog box appears as if it won't allow you to reposition the
preview area. To move the preview area, click the desktop and then click the dialog box. The
preview marquee starts blinking, allowing you to reposition it.

If you hear a chime when your scan begins and then scanning does not proceed, you should quit out of xRes
and increase the preferred amount of memory allocated to xRes.  To do this you simply highlight the xRes
program icon and type Command + I.  Then when the Get Info dialog comes up, you increase the preferred
memory amount and close the dialog to save the change.

MACINTOSH 68K MACHINES
Intermittently, on some 68K machines, you may not be able to access the object options dialog by double-
clicking on the object in the Object Panel.  You can still gain access to that dialog by double-clicking on the
object in the document.

WORKING WITH BRUSHES, TEXTURES, AND GRADIENTS:

TEXTURE NOTE
MMI files with brush strokes created using the Grain texture in xRes 2.0 will display in xRes 3.0 with no
texture. To fix this, rename the Grain texture in xRes 3.0: double-click the texture's icon in the texture
palette, rename it "aGrain", and click OK.

ADDING NEW GRADIENTS
(Windows only): The list of gradients in Gradient Options does not scroll. If you're working on a low-
resolution monitor and wish to add new gradients, delete existing gradients to make space in the scrolling
list.  To delete a gradient, select it and choose Delete from the Gradient Options submenu.

PREVIEWING FILTERS
The preview box, which you choose by checking Use Preview Box in General Preferences, displays the
image at the 1:1 zoom level. If you're working at a different zoom level such as 1:4 or 1:8, the effect that
appears in the preview window won't match the effect that's applied to the image at the current zoom level.

The preview box does not work in CMYK Mode with the commands on the Color submenu of the Modify
menu.

The preview box will not work if you are previewing indexed 256
files, or if you are using an 8-bit monitor display.

KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS
(Macintosh only): The keyboard shortcuts Command + (plus sign) and Command - (minus sign) can be used
to zoom either in or out. In a few rare instances, these commands may become inactive. If this happens,
click the desktop, then click in the application. The zoom shortcuts will work again.

SETTING PLUG-IN FOLDER
If you've accidentally set the plug-in folder to a CD ROM drive, or a network drive, you're system may
intermittently lock. If this does occur, you must delete the "xRes Preferences" file from the Resource folder
within the folder that contains the xRes program before restarting the program.

ACQUIRING OR OPENING EPS FILES
You must have the Helvetica font installed on your system to acquire EPS files exported from FreeHand.
When opening an EPS you may get a "Status Log" dialog which indicates that a particular font is missing.
You should install that font and open the EPS file again.  Simply put, if a default font is called for in the
EPS file, and your system does not have that font (or a substitute for it), your EPS image will be corrupted.
The file remains intact, but the image will not rasterize successfully.

Using the 'Custom Setting' selection under the Resolution: pull down menu of the PS RipLink Options
dialog is not recommended.  It is possible to cause the resolution of the acquired document to exceed
capabilities of the RipLink Acquire software.  The symptom is that the file 'Rips' into a corrupted stripe of
data across the top of the image viewport and is unusable.  Or, it is possible for your system to freeze while
using the RipLink Acquire software.  Should either of these symptoms occur, you must reset the default
Raster size.  To do this, perform the following 7 steps:

1)  select Acquire > PS RipLink ... from the File Menu
2)  open an EPS file
3)  select Custom Settings ... from the Resolution: pull down menu on the PS RipLink Options Dialog
4)  click the Raster size Radio button
5)  type 0 (the number zero)
6)  click OK
7)  click OK again

This procedure will rewrite the PS RipLink Preferences file in your System Preferences folder so that it
reflects a reasonable raster size.

OBJECT TRANSFORMATIONS:

RESIZE NOTE
A checkbox called Maintain Size appears in the Resize Document
dialog box which appears when you choose Document from the Resize submenu on the Modify menu. In
some very large documents, xRes may generate an error message when you attempt to type in a
new height, width, or resolution. If this occurs, change the pop-up menus in the dialog box to pixels before
checking this checkbox.
