NEW FEATURES IN ACROBAT AMBER READER
====================================
Amber is an update to Acrobat Reader with several new features:
Integration of PDF viewing into Netscape Navigator 2.0 You click
on a link to a PDF file in Navigator and Amber displays the file within
the Netscape window -- no more context switch to launch Acrobat as a
helper application.
Navigation among PDF, HTML, and other web content
transparently by integrating with Netscape's navigation functions
-- Go Back, etc.
PDF documents can be viewed a page at a time over the web.
You don't wait for the whole document to download before display.
Progressive display of the PDF file, so you see the text first,
then images, then embedded fonts.
Font blitting -- when viewed over the web, embedded fonts display
first as substitution fonts while the embedded outline is retrieved
then "blitted" onscreen for absolute fidelity.
Dockable Toolbar within the Netscape window.
New views -- continuous scrolling and 2-up pages.
Antialiased text for crisper onscreen viewing.
INSTALLING ACROBAT READER
=========================
**The Amber Reader is currently only available for Windows 95 and
Windows NT**
- To install Acrobat Amber Reader on your hard drive, from the Windows
Program Manager, double click on My Computer to open the
My Computer window.
- Download the Amber self-extractiong archive Amber32D1.exe
to a temporary location (eg \TEMP).
- double-click: [drive]:\Amber32D1.exe
- The file will expand the installation files into
the temp directory.
- Locate and double-click setup.exe
- Follow the instructions on your screen.
- Installation requires approximately 3 MB of free hard disk space.
If you see the installer message "Warning! Setup couldn't install
Netscape plugin (NPPDF32.DLL). Failed to locate Netscape Plugins directory."
The installer was unable to install the plugin necessary for Acrobat to
communicate with Netscape.
- Make sure Netscape Navigator 2.0 B3 or greater is installed on your
system.
- Locate the Netscape plugin NPPDF32.DLL in the [drive]:\Acroweb directory.
- Copy [drive]:\Acroweb\NPPDF32.DLL to \Netscape\Program\plugins
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
===================
- 386- or 486-based personal computer (486 recommended)
- Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows NT
- 4 MB application RAM
- 3 MB hard disk space, plus 2 MB TEMP space available
- 1.44 MB 3.5" floppy disk drive
- Netscape Navigator 2.0 B3 for web integration
VIEWING PDF PAGE-AT-A-TIME OVER THE WEB
=======================================
Best viewing performance for PDF documents over the web comes
from optimized PDF files and a server with the ability to byteserve
the files. The optimized PDF format and byteserver protocol are not
yet final, so we have provided a set of demonstration files on
Adobe's server to allow you to test the page-at-a-time performance
for yourself. See http://www.adobe.com/Amber
Any nonoptimized PDF file can be viewed in the Netscape window
(without page-at-a-time display) with the Amber Reader
and Netscape Navigator 2.0 version B3 or better.
KNOWN PROBLEMS
================
For the latest list of Known Problems, check Adobe's web site at
http://www.adobe.com/Amber
Errors During Acrobat Reader Installation
Installer message "Warning! Setup couldn't install
Netscape plugin (NPPDF32.DLL). Failed to locate Netscape Plugins directory."
See instructions for manually installing the Netscape Shim in the
Installing Acrobat Reader section above.
Viewing PDF files within Netscape Navigator
- The Netscape Plugin NPPDF32.DLL must be properly installed. See above.
- When viewing PDF files within Navigator in 256-color mode, interacting
with Netscape controls (menus, dialog boxes, etc.) may cause temporary
disturbance of the PDF color palette. Dismiss the Netscape control and
go to another page in the PDF file to refresh the screen.
Viewing PDF Files Page-at-a-time Over the Web
- Requires a web server with the ability to byteserve PDF files and
Acrobat Amber-optimized PDF files. With this release, optimized PDF
files are only available on Adobe's web site. See the section
Viewing PDF Files Page-at-a-time Over the Web above for more detail.
- Low speed and poor-quality network connections can cause the Amber Reader
to hang with a "Document Done" message in the Reader window footer.
Quit the Reader and try again to access the document from Netscape.
- Amber Reader times out after 5 minutes when accessing PDF files over
the Web. No error message is displayed. If the document has not displayed
after 5 minutes, Quit the Reader and try again.
- If you do several mouse actions and then hit the Netscape Stop button,
the application may hang.
Weblink Plug-in
- An invalid gopher URL (e.g. gopher://example.com/pub/test.pdf) will
download an error message as a text file with the PDF file name. Acrobat
Reader will return the message "There was an error opening this document.
File does not begin with %PDF-".
- If the web browser is busy contacting the host for over one minute,
Weblink will return the message "The web browser has not responded to
your request for over 1 minute: terminating request". The browser may
not respond to Weblink's attempt to cancel; use the web browser button
in the toolbar to activate the browser and manually cancel the request.
- URLs do not display in the Amber Reader footer within the Navigator
window.
- Navigator runs hidden when launched from a Weblink in a local PDF file.
- Base URLs are not functional in this release -- enter the absolute URL.
Navigation from Netscape
- Go Back currently returns you to the first page of a PDF file rather
than the page you left.
- Double-clicking the Netscape navigation buttons (Back, Forward) before
the Reader has displayed the first page of a PDF file can cause the
Reader to hang.
- Setting the Netscape Cache to 0 may cause Amber Reader or Netscape to
hang, or the PDF document may fail to open.
Local File Access
PDF files larger than 4MB will not open from the local disk.
PDF Embedded in HTML Files
- Printing the embedded PDF is not yet enabled. The HTML document
will print with a blank space in place of the embedded PDF.
- You cannot currently reliably embed more than one PDF file or
very large PDF files in an HTML document.
Secure Files
The Amber Reader cannot currently accept a password for a secure
document over the web. Choose Save As to download the PDF file to
disk, and open the file locally to enter the password.
System Shutdown
You cannot shut down your system while Amber Reader is running. Quit Amber
before selecting Shut Down.
Features Not Available in This Release
- Copy/Paste
- Acrobat keyboard shortcuts. The Netscape
Navigator API does not yet support this functionality.
- You cannot mail a PDF document as an attachment from Navigator.
- PDF Document Info from the Navigator window.
- Find feature.
HOW TO REPORT BUGS
==================
You may report problems to Adobe with the Bug Report form on Adobe's
Web site at http://www.adobe.com/Amber **placeholder URL**
Check the Known Problems section to see whether your problem has
already been reported. Please provide as much detail as possible about
the problem you encounter. Detailed instructions are available on the
web site.
Due to the volume of reports we receive, Adobe cannot respond directly
to individual bug reports. We do screen each report, and make every
effort to keep the Known Problems list up to date. We appreciate your
assistance in making the Acrobat Amber Reader a top quality product.
