THE LOADSTAR STORY
by Dave Moorman
In 1982, Jim & Judi Mangham
had a crazy idea: Put quality software
on a monthly disk. "Softdisk" for the
Apple II was born on thier Shreveport,
LA kitchen table. It was a hit, and
two years later, they expanded by
creating LOADSTAR for the very popular
Commodore 64.
Fender Tucker joined Softdisk,
Inc., as Managing Editor of LOADSTAR
in 1984, and brought a classy sense of
style and "off-kilter" vision to the
magazine. Around issue 60, he wrote
about the Mighty LOADSTAR Tower, an
ediface worthy of such a grand
publishing enterprise. The heighth of
the mythic Tower became the current
issue number -- and it just kept
growing!
LOADSTAR, as well as Softdisk and
several publications for IBM and MAC
machines, never depended on
advertising. The Subscribers got what
they paid for -- eight to ten great
peices of software every month. The
programs came mostly from independent
programmers, and the creativity knew
no bounds.
The original Softdisk monthly
ended its run with issue 165 as Apple
II use declined. LOADSTAR raced past
this benchmark a couple of years later
without looking back. Today, LOADSTAR
is the longest running Commodore
publication, and perhaps the longest
running single platform computer
publication ever.
LOADSTAR split off from Softdisk,
Inc., and Fender and Judi took it back
to their home. Subscriptions dimished,
but Fender did not want to see
LOADSTAR come to an end. In 1999, they
turned the reins over to Sheri and me
as they moved on to other pursuits.
We moved the base of operation to
Holly, CO, where I am a full time
clergy. Editing LOADSTAR keeps me out
of trouble! And we are dedicated to
keeping this [institution] of the
Commodore Scene running as long as we
have subscribers and new software the
share.
And that is where [you] can enter
the LOADSTAR Saga. If you write
programs, text, or music, if you do
graphics or special effects, if you
have anything interesting and
entertaining, send it to us.
We [love] our providers -- and see
that they get LOADSTAR for free, plus
anything else we can do for them in
the way of back issues and special
products.
