Metal Knights is distributed as a SHAREWARE product and can
be copied freely as long as it stays in it's original form which is
MKDOOR??.ZIP or METAL??.ZIP file. No file included in MKDOOR??.ZIP
or METAL??.ZIP can be removed, modified, and no file can be added.
The actual Metal Knights DEMO program is given to you free of
charge and can be used for a trial period not exceeding two
(2) months. After that trial period you must register your copy
with the author, David Vincent, or stop using it.
The DEMO program contains some limitations that does not exist
in the registered version to encourage the user to register its
copy.
Please, encourage the authors of Shareware products to help
them in their efforts of producing and improving quality programs
at a low price in the demo shareware concept.

QUICK START IN LOCAL MODE
To start the game, simply type METAL and hit the ENTER key.
Now you see the title screen. Hit ENTER again, then type your
name and hit ENTER twice to see the map selection screen. Using
the up and down arrow, choose a map as a battle-field and hit
ENTER. Study the field, you can see it entirely as a map if you
hit the F2 key.
Now you can install your base in a place near many towns,
roads, natural resources using the B key. Then hit ENTER to access
the base menu. Select Ground Army and buy a Scout unit. The Scout
unit icon will blink over the base icon. You can move the unit
towards a city. When you reach a city, by moving your unit on its
icon, this city then belongs to you. You enter the city's menu
automatically, and you can change the city's name, or the tax rate
to see how it affects the revenue or the population growth. Select
the Building Construction option and build a farm. Quit this menu
by clicking the mouse on OK, or using the ESC key and take a look
at the farm you just built on the field (usually located on the
right side of the city). Repeat this process to conquer as many
cities as possible.
Go back to the Base's menu and buy a Bulldozer (in the Ground
Army option). Move it alongside the base and hit C while it
blinks. A road just appeared. Move it towards a natural resource
(mine, wood, oil) while constructing a road. Now you can buy a
truck in the base's menu, and drive it to the natural resource. In
the mine's menu (sawmill, or oil well) select Load Truck and
observe the truck. Later you can drive the full loaded truck back
to a town to sell its content.
Finally type E to end this turn. Your units starts again with
the same number of movements they had when you bought them. Hit
ENTER on them to make them blink, then you can move them.
Now hit F1 and try every options. When you are familiar
with the basic commands, try again using two players. You can
control both players and simulate combats between the two armies.

INSTALLATION
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Metal Knights is a military strategy game where you are the ruler
of a rising empire. The Metal Knights Terminal gives you a game
supporting VGA graphics with 256 colours. It also supports a mouse
and a Sound Blaster card. This terminal is necessary to play the
Metal Knights game!
To download the METAL??.ZIP terminal, hit the D key. After the
transfer, quit the BBS, and unzip the file in a temporary
directory. Type INSTALL.EXE to run the installation program.
Once installed, Metal Knights can be used 3 different ways:
First: the easy way. After INSTALL.EXE, you are in the Metal
Knights directory. Type MK and hit ENTER. This will activate the
terminal mode. With this terminal you can call your BBS with the
ATDT-XXX-XXXX command, like in a standard communication program.
Just enter the Metal Knights door. It's possible to edit the
METAL.FON file to make macro commands.
OR
Second way. Contact your BBS using your regular communication
program. Enter the Metal Knights door. When you see .. Terminal
Synchronization .., shell out quickly of your communication
program, while holding the line, without changing directory, type
MK and hit the ENTER key. After the game, go back in your
communication program to continue your work on the BBS.
OR
Third way. External protocol. The INSTALL.EXE configure
automatically Telemate, Telix, QModem, QModem Pro and Terminate
to work this way. Consult your communication program documentation
if you are not using one of those. Activate your communication program
and call the BBS. Enter the Metal Knights door and everything will
work automatically.

It is better to add the modem speed like in the second and
fourth choices.

screen graphic change.
You can modify the MK.BAT file with the parameters of your
choice. Note that these switches are not necessary since you may
modify the options using SETUP.EXE.

Almost identical to the local mode play, except for a few
details:
When you enter the game, the screen shows you the games in progress
and the games waiting for more players, etc. The menu looks like

You can join a game by hitting the letter J followed by the number
of the game. It is also possible to join a game already in
progress. In that case you will be given a bonus amount of money
according to the number of days you missed, to catch up with the
other players. After you selected a game you have to choose a
codename that will identify you for the duration of that game.
NOTE: Only the games where the maximum number of players is not
reached, appears on the list if there is less than 10 games.
You can also create a new game by hitting the letter S. In that
case, you can choose the battle-field by selecting a map. You can
also choose the maximum number of players for this game and even a
password to limit the access to selected players. Finally you give
your codename.
The list of the best Metal Knights Generals will be shown if you
hit the H key.
Page 7Before joining a game, you may want to take a look at the battle-
field of that game. Press V and you will see the list of the
available maps, and select the field you want to see. If you do
not have the file containing the maps on your hard disk, it will be
downloaded automatically from the BBS into the METAL directory of
your hard disk.
- You can play only one turn per day per game.
- When you win a game or eliminate an opponent, you access the
Temple of the Best Generals. Eliminating an opponent gives you 5
points, and winning a game gives you 10 points, while being
eliminated removes 3 points from your score.
- Of course, in the terminal mode play, it is not possible to save
a game, restore a game, or use the E key to pass your turn.
HISTORIC
After World War III, all the super power empires are destroyed.
Only a few rebellious groups survived this terrible fate...
Year 2012, you are the leader of one of those groups.
Wrecked lands are now ready to be conquered. Those lands are
inhabited by starving people, and contains a lot of natural
resources, waiting for a leader to take charge and put the economy
back together.
It is up to you to move in the unruled lands before other
rebellious groups, also looking for power, take them in their
possession!
To do so, you have 300$. First you have to establish a base in a
strategic location. Then you must train soldiers and send them on
the field, to conquer cities and collect taxes. Use a bulldozer to
get natural resources, and use a truck to transport iron, gold and
wood to the city where you can sell it for profit!

It is very important to chose a good spot for the location of your
base, because everything depends on it. Select a place near
cities, natural resources and lots of roads. The base is the
starting point of all your military units. Hit the B key to put
up your base where the cursor is pointing.
Many options are available in the base's menu... With the first
3 you can buy different military units... All the characteristics
of the available game pieces are listed. Those characteristics
are:
Attack power on ground : Firepower against a ground enemy
(Infantry, tank and boat)
Attack power in the air: Firepower against an enemy in the air
(plane).
Defense power: Shield efficiency and defense ability.
Range: The unit can attack an enemy located at
this distance (measured in number of
squares). If this number is greater than
one, the enemy cannot counter-attack.
Speed: The number of squares a unit can move in
one turn.
Price: How much it costs to buy this military
unit.
You start with only a few different types of units. It is up to
you to develop new ones by building universities! The most
powerful unit is the Nuclear one. It destroys EVERYTHING in a 3
square radius!
It is of prime importance to defend your base adequately. So, as
soon as possible, you should fortify the base. Be sure to always
have one unit inside to defend it. If an other player conquers
your base, everything you own falls in his hands. Remember that a
Commando unit can invade a deserted base without being seen. If
you loose your base, you are out of the game.
Page 9BUY A RADAR
A radar is very useful when the game gets more advanced. It helps
you to easily detect the units on the field. With a radar you can
see the units hidden inside a city or a base. Some game pieces
like the NightShade, the Shark and the Porcupine are undetectable
on the field if you do not have a radar! But remember that the
Commando and the Stealthy are not visible, even with a radar.
Hit R to access the radar screen.
FORTIFY THE BASE
This option gives a 50% increase in the defense ability to all the
units located in the base, as long as they stay there. This is
very useful when the base is under attack! If there is no unit in
the base to protect it, the base can still defend itself with an
additional strength of 5 points.
The base has a fortification strength even though it has not been
fortified. This fortification strength is equal to 1 point for
each 5000 inhabitants of your empire. Ex: The base of a 20,000
people empire has a strength of 4 points. If this base is
fortified, the total strength increases to 9 points (4+5=9).
By selecting "Fortify the Base" when it has already been fortified,
you can repair the damaged fortifications. If the base has already
the maximum fortifications allowed, which is 8, the strength of
each one is shown according to the formula: one point for each
5000 people and 5 more points if it is fortified.
The attack force of the base is equal to the number of
fortifications multiplied by the strength of one fortification.
Remember that the strength of a fortification in normally 8 because
every piece of the game is in fact a group of 8 smaller ones (see
ATTACK section). In the preceding example, it would be 72 (8
fortifications X 9 points = 72). The defense strength is always
the double of the attack force, and would be 144 in this case.
CHANGE THE TAX RATE
This option makes it possible to change the tax rate of all the
cities in one single step. This option is a macro command, this
way you do not have to go in each city to adjust the tax rate.

SELECT A PIECE
In the middle of the screen, on the left, you can see all the
pieces located in the base. To select one, hit TAB, then hit ENTER
on the piece you want.
It is also possible to select a piece located in the base without
having to enter the city by using the TAB key on the small picture
of the base on the field.
CITY
All the cities are already inhabited when you arrive. To conquer
a city, just enter in it with an infantry unit (Soldier,
AlphaWarrior, Panther or Commando) and the city is yours. The city
has already a number of citizens (between 1000 and 1300) who will
pay taxes and will buy natural resources.
Be careful, citizens revolt if the tax rate is too high during two
consecutive days! Also, if the population drops below 900
residents, the city will become a ghost town and will no longer
belong to you! Furthermore, it will cost you 10$ in administrative
charges.
It is important to feed the population properly. If the citizens
are starving, it will cost you 1$ for each 1000 residents to feed
them, and the population will drop at a 10% rate.
If your base is fortified and under attack, you will be informed of
the attack, the opponent, and the number of fortifications left, in
a message on your next visit.
CHANGE CITY'S NAME
This makes it possible to personalize your empire. Give the city
a name that will help you to locate it more easily. The T key also
helps you to locate a city by the 3 first letters of its name.
Page 11CHANGE THE TAX RATE
You can change the city's tax rate with this option. With a high
tax rate, the income is high, but the growth rate of the population
is low. On the contrary, if the tax rate is lower the growth rate
of the population is higher, which will mean more income
eventually. With a tax rate at 55%, the growth rate drop to zero.
It is important not to maintain a high tax rate for too long
because the population can rebel under pressure! A taxe rate of 0%
gives 20% population growth!
BUY A BUILDING
With this menu you can buy different buildings to improve the
efficiency of the city.
Build a farm
A farm produces the food necessary for the survival of the
citizens. This should be the first step after you conquered the
city. With a growing population, you may have to buy more farms
for a city.
Over:
1000 peoples 1 farm is necessary
3000 peoples 2 farms are necessary
4000 peoples 3 farms are necessary
6000 peoples 4 farms are necessary
9000 peoples 5 farms are necessary
13000 peoples 6 farms are necessary
18000 peoples 7 farms are necessary
24000 peoples 8 farms are necessary
Establish a bank
A bank produces an additional income for the city. It will give 3$
for each 1000 people. A bank is a good investment when the city
reaches a certain level. However, a bank cannot produce an income
exceeding 20$.
Build a university
With a university you will be able to improve your military
technology. You can chose between 3 different types of research:
Ground Army, Marine or Air Force. Better military units will give
you an advantage over the primitive ones. You will even have a
prototype of the new weapon discovered on the next turn after you
bought the university. It will also be possible to buy directly
this unit from this town by selecting "Buy a Military Unit".

Construct a military factory
When an empire reaches a certain size, it may become difficult to
buy a military unit and transport it at a far war-field. The
military factory sells those units directly in the city where it is
located. If you select this option a second time, you can sell the
factory for half the price you paid.
BUY A MILITARY UNIT
With this menu you can buy a military unit if the town has a
military factory or a university. It works the same way as the
base's menu.
FORTIFY THE CITY
This option increases the defense strength by 50% for all the units
inside the town as long as they stay there. This is important when
the city is under attack! Furthermore, if no units are in town to
protect it, the city can defend itself with an increased strength
of 5 points.
The fortification strength of a city is related to the number of
building located in it. Each farm gives 1 point, a university and
a bank gives 1 point each, and a military factory gives 2 points.
The fortification gives 5 more points. Ex: A city with 2 farms,
one bank and one university has a strength of 4, which is a little
more than an AlphaWarrior. If the city is fortified, the strength
will be 9 ( 4+5 = 9 ).
You can repair damaged fortifications by selecting the "Fortify the
City" option when the city has already been fortified. If
the city already has the maximum fortification allowed, 8 (because
a game piece is actually composed of 8 smaller ones), the strength
of its fortifications is shown on the screen according to the
number of buildings.
When attacking, the strength of the attack is equal to the number
of fortifications multiplied by the strength of one fortification.
In the precedent example, it would be a strength of 72. The
defense strength is always the double of the attack force, and
would be 144 in the case of this fortified town.
Furthermore, if the city has been fortified, you will be advised of
any attack on that city, with the identification of the opponent
and the number of fortifications left, in a message on your next
turn.

UNLOAD TRUCK
When one or several trucks come back in town with a load of gold,
iron, wood or oil, it is possible to sell that load to the
citizens by selecting the "Unload Truck" option. The money
collected from the delivery is immediately available.
SELECT A PIECE
In the middle of the screen, on the right side, you can see all the
pieces located in the city. To select one, choose one with the TAB
key, then press ENTER.
It is also possible to select a piece located in the city without
entering the city by using the TAB key on the picture of the town
on the map.
METROPOLIS
A Metropolis is a city with a population over 5,000 people. The
icon representing the city changes when it becomes a Metropolis.
Having a metropolis gives certain advantages, when you build a
University, you get 2 technologies for the price of one! The
second technology is discovered in the same field than the first
one.
It is very profitable to have at least one or two Metropolis in
each of your games. With its large population, buying a bank
becomes a very good investment in a metropolis.
NATURAL RESOURCES
Workers of a mine will extract the natural resources of the ground.
The production can be sold to produce an appreciable profit for
the empire. A mine will produce 5 tons of ore a day, 10 tons a day
if a factory is present. The ore produced by a mine worth 1$ a
ton, wood and petroleum worth 2$ a ton, and gold worth 3$ a ton.
Ore can be found in the flat open country, wood in the forest, gold
in the snow-covered land, and petroleum is found in the desert.
It is also possible to select a piece located in a mine without
entering it, by using the TAB key on the little picture of the
mine/sawmill/oil well on the map.
Page 14ROADS
The speed of ground units is calculated according to its normal
movement on a road. Those ground units have more difficulty to
move off road. The speed is reduced to one half on the flat open
country, and to only one third in the forest, the desert and the
snow. That is why travelling on road is better! It is always
possible to lay out roads with a Bulldozer. When the Bulldozer is
blinking, hit the C key to lay out a road section. You can make
a road section equivalent to the length of a square for only 2$!
Unfortunately, it is not possible to lay out roads in the desert or
in the snow-covered land. But you can open a path the same way you
do for a road and for the same price. Your ground units will
travel at half speed on those paths, it is better than a third of
the speed without a path.
Roads can be destroyed with any unit having an attack force of 3 or
more. Just attack the section of the road you want to destroy by
using the A key when the unit is blinking.
SPECIAL MILITARY UNITS
Some units have very particular characteristics...
INFANTRY
Soldier, AlphWarrior, Panther and Commando are parts of infantry.
Those units can conquer cities. As soon as you own the town, all
taxes coming from it are directed in your treasury. Only those
units can invade enemy towns, mines and bases.
BULLDOZER
The Bulldozer helps you to set up mines, sawmills and oil wells.
Simply move it on the appropriate icon on the map to start
exploitation. Bulldozers can also build roads.
TRUCK
Trucks transport ore, wood or oil in town to sell them. To see the
load of the Truck press the TAB key while the icon is blinking.
A truck usually has a load capacity of 50 tons.
Page 15COMMANDO
The Commando unit acts as a spy, by entering a city or a base it
can see the enemies possessions. The Commando is always invisible
even to an enemy radar! If the town or the base does not have any
military unit locate inside, the Commando unit conquers it,
otherwise, it shows all the information on the town or on the base
and the units it contains.
LONG RANGE ATTACK UNITS
Some tanks and airplanes are equipped with long range missiles.
This is very useful since the enemy cannot counter-attack! To do
an attack from a distance, you must use the ATTACK mode. While the
unit icon is flashing, hit the A key to engage the attack mode and
select the target! NB: those units cannot attack at a distance of
only one square! Also if an enemy attacks you at that distance,
you cannot counter-attack! So protect them!
PATRIOT
Patriot unit can defend a base or a town against long range
attacks. If a PATRIOT is located inside a town (or a base) it
takes care of all long distance attacks against this town. The
PATRIOT is the only unit able to counter-attack long range attack
units. It can also protect Transport Truck, Cargo and Hercules
against enemy attacks.
SHARK
In different places on the map, in the ocean, it is possible to see
the wreck of a sunken ship.
Those wreckage normally contain treasures and you can get to them
by using a submarine, the Shark. The Shark cannot be seen by an
opponent who doesn't have a radar. Treasures are usually money,
but can also be secret plans. Those plans can help you build
stronger trucks with a load capacity of 75 tons, instead of 50
tons.
TRANSPORT
There are 3 military units that are able to transport slower or
immobile units. They are the Transport, the Cargo and the
Hercules and they act respectively on the Ground, on Water and in
the Air. If one of those units is attacked, the pieces they
contain undergo the same amount of damages than the carrier!
A Transport can carry 3 units, the Cargo can carry 8, and the

in the carrier by using the TAB key on that carrier.

NUCLEAR
A nuclear bomb destroys EVERYTHING in a 3 square radius, whatever
the target is: Cities, Mines, Sawmills, Oil wells, military
units... But remember that in order to eliminate an opponent, you
cannot just destroy his base, you have to conquer it. By
conquering the enemy base you order the remaining troops to self-
destruct.
ATTACK
Each piece of the game is in fact a group of 8 smaller pieces that
compose the unit. When under attack, this number decreases in
proportion to the inflicted damage. If the number reaches zero,
the unit disappears. There is two way to attack an opponent piece,
first you can simply move your unit on the opponent's unit, or
second, you can use the ATTACK mode. If you use the first way and
you destroy the opponent's piece, your unit moves to the place of
the destroyed unit. In all other cases, your unit keeps its
position.
EXPERIENCE
When a unit causes some damages to an opponent, this unit acquires
experience worth one point (represented by a star). If this unit
destroys completely the opponent, it acquires 2 experience points.
Those points raise the skill of the unit and increases the
following performances. Conquer an opponent position also gives
experience points.
SURROUNDING EFFECT
If the opponent's unit is surrounded, its efficiency is decreased.
Its attack and defense power drop by 10% for each pieces
surrounding it. So prepare your attacks accordingly!
MESSAGES
A messenger is used to deliver messages to the other players.
This option adds a lot of fun to the game! PLEASE, stay polite
with your insults! :-)
The addressee will receive your message automatically at the
beginning of his next visit.
Once sent, it is impossible to stop the message delivery.

PEACE TREATY
With this option you can offer some money to an opponent to buy
peace between the to empires. The other player will be informed on
his next visit. This player can first look at your situation in
the game, then he must get in the PEACE TREATY's menu to accept or
refuse your deal. If he accepts, he cashes in the money and he
will have to pay you double to brake the treaty and attack you.
To brake a treaty, use the B key in the same menu.
KEEP POSITION
Some units are used for defense only. It is possible to order
these units to keep their position. That way this unit will not be
available with the "N" command. To move this unit you will have to
hit ENTER to make it blink.
REMOVE A PIECE FROM THE GAME
This option makes it possible to remove a piece from the game and
collect half the unit's worth in money. When a unit is no longer
useful, remove it, the transfer of the pieces will be quicker that
way. This option is also useful when you need a few extra $$$ to
buy a farm near a starving town.
MAPEDIT.EXE
MapEdit is a program used to create your own battle-field. It is
available to download in the Metal Knights door under the Map
Editor option.
All the battle-fields are saved in files using the .MAP extension.
If the .MAP file exists in the METAL directory, it will be
available for the game.
If you create a battle-field you judge good enough for the game,
upload it on the BBS and ask the Sysop to copy it in the Metal
Knights door directory. By doing so, your battle field will be
available for all the BBS players.

B To install the Base
C Lay out or Construct a road section (Bulldozer only)
N To Zoom on the Next piece, a VERY useful command. Hit
the N key and the cursor will move on the next piece to
play. It helps you to locate your units more easily.
G To keep or Guard the position, it deactivates the N key
for that piece. Useful for the Porcupine because they
are stationary so you do not want to select them with the
N key!
V To Visualize the budgets of the cities, this key shows a
list of all your cities as you see them when you enter the
game. Useful to see quickly if a town is near starvation
or if a rebellion is imminent...
T To find a Town. Once you spotted a town near starvation,
you have to find it on the map! This option helps to find
a town easily by using its name. Enter the first 3
letters of the town's name and the cursor will move on
that town.
U To see a list of the towns having a University, a Bank and
a Military factory.
R To activate the Radar view.
F1 Help menu
F2 Satellite view, the hole map can be seen in one screen!
It is possible to see in one shot how are disposed
continents, forests, mountains, towns, roads and
natural resources. Useful to chose a good spot for the
base's location.
M To send a Message. This key is not very important but
very amusing!
L Read (Lire) messages. To take a second look at the
messages you received today.
P To activate the Treaty Menu, to offer or accept a peace
treaty.
I Player Info. Will show the actual time with time left on
the BBS, the maximum number of players allowed in the
game, and the password if there is one.

TAB To select a piece. When many pieces are located in a
Transport, a Cargo or an Hercules, or when they are
located within a city/base/mine, it can be hard to select
a particular one. It is possible to use the N key until
you fall on the right piece, but using the TAB key is
quicker. You can easily select any piece that appears in
the menu presented when you hit the TAB key. The number
of moves left also appears under the picture of the piece
in that menu.
F10 Statistics. Shows different statistics on you and on the
other players. It is useful to assess the strength of an
opponent and the size of its territory.
F Zoom on a starving city.
D Delete a piece from the game.
S Activate/deactivate the mouSe (Souris).
X Activate/deactivate the Sound Blaster.
CTRL-Arrow for quick moves.
ESC Quit

UNREGISTERED VERSION
The unregistered version is a demo program where some options are
not active. In that version it is impossible to have a total
population exceeding 10,000 people (which limits the income),
universities are not allowed (so, no powerful weapon), and only 5
maps are available in the local mode. Also there is a delay at the
beginning of the game which reminds you that you are using an
unregistered version. Please, help the author in the development
of Metal Knights by registering your copy now, you will receive an
encoded key that will register your copy. Print and fill out the
form in the ORDER.DOC file.
