GAMEPLAY.DOC
------------
FRAMED can be played using either a joystick or the
keyboard. We recommend that you use the keyboard as
this gives the greatest control, and because some
options are only available through the keyboard. If
you want to use a joystick it must be a 2 button
type and should be calibrated once selected.
FRAMED is a platform adventure game with a plot
that evolves as you play. We will attempt to
explain the purpose of your quest as it is up to
you to figure out the circumstances that brought
you to be locked up in a dank cell.
Unlike most platform games, FRAMED requires thought
to complete the puzzles as well as manual
dexterity. In order to demonstrate how the game is
played, we will explain how to escape from the cell
in which you begin. Print this document and work
through it as you play.
A quick reference to the control system is
available by selecting Help off the Main Menu or
Escape Menu.
Firstly walk left slightly until you are in front
of the cupboard, and press E. (This key examines
the things around you without changing them). Now
press SPACEBAR and open both sides of the cupboard.
(This key manipulates the things you are standing
in front of. You would use it to open doors, pull
levers, rummage amongst rubble, talk to friendly
people, or perform any other action on the things
you see).
Inside the cupboard you can now see something.
Press P to pick this up. The monitor in the bottom
left will now tell you that you are carrying a
piece of insulated cable. If you press ALT now you
will attempt to use this object at your current
location, and a message will appear telling you
that the cable is of no use here.
Walk a little further right until you are in front
of the cell door, and press SPACEBAR. You will then
be informed that the door is locked. Now walk to
the very right hand side of your cell, and pick up
the hairgrip. You will now be holding two items,
the insulated wire and the hairgrip. If you look at
the monitor on the left hand side, it is still
showing a picture of the insulated wire, however
you wish to use the hairgrip to try to pick the
lock. To select a new object to use you need to
open the Inventory Window.
At any one time you can carry up to 16 objects,
however only one object can be used at a time. In
order to select a new object you need to press
RETURN to access the Inventory Window. This window
shows all the objects you are carrying, and serves
3 purposes. You can select a new object to use, you
can examine any object you are carrying, and you
can try to combine two objects with each other. At
the moment both the white box, and the yellow box
are highlighting the insulated wire. The white box
selects the object you wish to use or examine. The
yellow box can be used to select a second object to
try to combine/use with the white box object.
Press the cursor keys now to move the white box
over each of the objects in turn, and press the E
key on each one to examine it. (Pressing E on the
game screen examines your surroundings, pressing E
on the inventory screen examines objects. Both can
give valuable clues to help you complete the game).
Imagine you had picked up a gun, and a box of
bullets, you might then wish to load the gun with
the bullets. To do this you would hit RETURN to
bring up the Inventory Window, and move the white
highlight box over the gun in the normal way. You
would then move the yellow highlight box over the
bullets by holding down CTRL and using the cursor
keys. Once the two were both highlighted you would
press the SPACEBAR to combine them. Try to combine
the wire with the hairgrip by moving the white box
over the wire and the yellow box over the hairgrip,
and pressing the SPACEBAR. You will be told that
these objects are not used together.
The last of the 3 functions of the Inventory Window
is to select a new object to use. To do this use
the cursor keys to move the white box over the
hairgrip and press RETURN. The Inventory Window
will close, and the monitor on the left will now
show that you are holding the hairgrip. (To cycle
through available objects quickly you can use the
< and > keys from the game screen without accessing
the Inventory Window. However to examine objects,
or to try and combine two objects together you must
hit RETURN and bring up the Inventory Window).
Ok, you can now try to pick the lock. Stand in
front of the door, and press ALT to use the
hairgrip. A message will appear saying that picking
the lock while the camera is watching you is not a
good idea. Nearly but not quite! Somehow you have
got to disable the camera.
If you look just right of the door there is a small
white thing on the wall. Stand in front of it, and
press E to find out what it is. Ah - it's a wall
socket. Press the > key once or open the Inventory
Window to reselect the insulated wire, and then
press ALT to use it in the socket. This shorts the
camera out which will explode.
Now try to pick lock again, this time it works!
Notice that the insulated wire, and the hairgrip
have gone now. This is because they have performed
their function, and you don't want them cluttering
your inventory. If you press the SPACEBAR now the
door will open allowing you out into the Main Wing
of the prison.
Lastly you can drop, or throw objects by pressing
the D, or T keys. If you throw an object it will
travel in the direction you are currently facing.
To solve some puzzles objects may need to be thrown
or dropped in a specific place.
At the beginning of the game you are unable to kill
the guards as you are unarmed, and you must learn
to evade them. Hold the L key down, then use the
cursor keys to look around you to check for guards
coming your way. If you are unable to look in a
direction then it is because you are at the edge of
a location. Note that the other inmates do not hurt
you - they may even help you!
Pressing ESC at any time during the game calls up
a menu that amongst other things allows to save
your current game or load a previously saved game.
All the puzzles are logical and should be easily
solved with a little thought. If you get stuck,
open the inventory window and examine each object
in turn. Very few objects are red herrings. If
something you see looks unusual examine it, and
think about what you might do with it.
Don't expect to be attacked by endless waves of
baddies and to be leaping over endless orcs. This
is not the philosophy of this game. After all there
are enough games around already in this mould.
Primarily it is a game of exploration with an
evolving story. It does require skill and timing to
complete certain areas, however these are secondary
to the exploration, and puzzle solving elements.
