Limitations
-----------
- To use AGP Voodoo Banshee the Windows 95 version MUST BE 4.00.1212 or higher.
- The original "GOLD" version of Windows 95 version 4.00.950 and version 4.00.950A
(Windows 95 GOLD with Service Pack 1) DO NOT support AGP graphics adapters.
- Attempting to install an AGP Voodoo Banshee adapter on a Windows version that
is not equal to or greater than 4.00.1212 will cause your Windows operating
system to stop responding. Please see Safe Recovery From Failed Install section
under the troubleshooting section below.
- OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2 version 4.00.1111 or 4.00.950B) can be updated to
support AGP display adapters by applying the USB SUPPLEMENT to OSR2.
The following software packages must be installed for this to happen.
* First Install INF updater that corresponds to your systems chipset.
For Intel based chipsets please refer to the following web site to obtain
the appropriate software upgrade.
Follow the instructions for installing this update.
For VIA Technologies based chipset please refer to following web site to
obtain the appropriate software. HTTP://www.via.com.tw/drivers/index.htm
Follow the instructions for installing this update.
* Second Install the USB SUPPLEMENT update.
The USB SUPPLEMENT (USBSUPP.EXE) originates from MICROSOFT and is supplied
to OEM's who are distributing OSR2. As such the USB SUPPLEMENT is only
available from the OEM supplier of the AGP system. The USB SUPPLEMENT can
also be found in your Windows 95 CD which you received with your new PC in
the following directory.
Replace X where X represents your CD-ROM drive letter, X:\OTHER\UPDATES\USB\USBSUPP.EXE
The instructions for installing this update are also included in this directory.
Once the USB patch has been applied, you should see a "USB Supplement to OSR2"
listed in the Add/Remove Program Properties Page (click Start, Settings,
Control Panel and then double click the Add/Remove Programs icon).
* Third Install the AGP Voodoo Banshee display drivers for Windows 95 by following
the instructions listed under the INSTALLATION section of this document.
- Running 640x480 16 Color will run SUPERVGA.DRV or VGA.DRV. No Voodoo Banshee
features will be used. Switch to a different resolution or color depth.
- Full windowed hardware acceleration with this version of the drivers is
only possible when running at 16bpp modes.
Troubleshooting
---------------
Problem: How can I tell what version of Windows operating system I am running.
Resolution: Right click on My Computer icon located on your desktop and select Properties.
Under the System Description section there will be a version number
(4.00.xxxx) which you can cross reference using the following table.
Windows Ver# AGP Capable Release Version File dates
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.00.950 NO Windows 95 retail 4.00.950 7/11/95
4.00.950A NO Windows 95 retail w/SP1 4.00.950 7/11/95
4.00.950B YES ** OEM Service Release 2 4.00.1111* 8/24/96
4.00.950B YES ** OEM Service Release 2.1 4.03.1212-1214* 8/24/96-8/27/97
4.00.950C YES ** OEM Service Release 2.5 4.03.1214* 8/24/96-11/18/97
* = Not all Windows files will have this version number, many files may vary depending
on the components that have been updated in the operating system.
** = USB upgrade may be installed on this version of Windows to implement AGP
functionality. Please refer to the Limitations section of this document for
instructions.
Problem: How can I tell if USB SUPPLEMENT has been installed on my system.
Resolution: Once the USB patch has been applied, you should see a "USB Supplement to OSR2"
listed in the Add/Remove Program Properties Page (click Start, Settings,
Control Panel and then double click the Add/Remove Programs icon).
Problem: Safe Recovery From Failed Install.
Resolution: Power system down and turn system back on after 2-3 seconds.
Once the system finishes POST it will start to load your operating system.
This will be visible when you see the banner Starting Windows 95 in the lower
left corner of your screen, press the F8 key and select SAFE MODE from the
boot options menu.
Once Windows initializes in SAFE MODE open the Control Panel by Clicking on
(Start, Settings, Control Panel). From the Control Panel double click on the
Display icon.
From the Display Properties window select the Settings Tab and click on
Advanced. From the Advanced Display Properties window select the Adapter Tab
and click on the Change button.
Click on the Show All Devices radio button and select Standard Display
Types from the Manufacturer's selection window then select Standard PCI Graphics
Adapter (VGA) from the models selection window.
Click on OK to accept changes and click on Close for the Advanced Display
Properties and Display Properties windows.
Click on OK to reboot system with updated changes.
* There are a couple of know circumstances where a install could fail and cause
Windows operating system not to boot.
1. The AGP display drivers were installed on a version of Windows operating
system that does not support AGP display adapters or has not been updated
with the USB SUPPLEMENT for OSR2.
2. Driver file sources are not for the correct Voodoo Banshee display adapter
in your system i.e. PCI or AGP using SGRAM or SDRAM combinations.
3. Driver file sources are corrupt.
Problem: After installing the card, the system still detects my old
card even though it is no longer in the system.
Resolution: See Step 2 of the "Fresh Installation" instructions.
Known Issues
