1.1 Author's Note
-----------------
I am pleased to release my first attempt at a game on the PC. This
game was programmed entirely using Borland Turbo Pascal 7.0, and
the storyline, graphics, etc. are all my own creations. I did,
however, use a few public domain utilities to aid me in drawing
the graphics, etc., and the music was NOT created by me; they were
simply public domain CMF files I found floating around, so I give
here credit to whoever it was that did create them. This game
has been playtested, and so while there are no major bugs which
will format your hard drive, or crash your computer (I hope), this
program may still have very minor flaws. Just in case, Save Often!!!

Note: This game is Shareware, and as such may be freely distributed,
provided it remains in its archived form (i.e. the files INSTALL.DA1,
INSTALL.DA2, INSTALL.DA3). Once installed in your computer, the
game takes a "fingerprint" of your computer and its environment, and
the installed version will not work if copied to another system.
If this causes any problems (e.g. registered users upgrading computers)
I will be happy to register you again for free (I keep the names of
everyone who registers). Sorry I had to do this, but I hope to at
least challenge software pirates with a bit of copy protection for
a change. Anyway, give the archived version of this game to all your
friends, and upload it wherever you want. Thanks.
1.2 - Installation Notes
------------------------
Simply run INSTALL from the DOS prompt to begin installation. Select
the appropriate directory you wish to install to, and select your
sound card. If you receive an error message that the program was unable
to find your sound card settings, or CT-VOICE.DRV, and you have a true
SoundBlaster, ensure the environment variables SOUND and BLASTER are set
in your AUTOEXEC.BAT (see your SB manual for details). Some
SB-compatibles may not come with this driver or may not be compatible
with it, but The Search for Freedom should work on most SB Compatibles.
If you have any sound troubles, try selecting PC Speaker and see if this
remedies the problem. If so, your sound card may be incompatible with
this driver.
When asked if you wish to use paging, initally answer yes. If, when you
run the game and are walking about the town, you can see the screen
being redrawn, then run VIDEO at the DOS prompt and disable paging. This
should result in imporved performance for your video card. If you like
it the way it is, keep the setting as is.
Finally, the game will install, and you may type FREEDOM to begin playing.
1.3 - Getting Started
---------------------
If you are new to the world of Fantasy Role-Playing, this section will
help you get started.
First, you'll need to break out of jail and find an equipment store. Buy
yourselves the best weapons and armor you can afford, and a few torches.
Then find the Catacombs, and linger near the entrance, fighting a few
monsters to get gold and XP. Once you have enough gold, buy the 1st
level Mage spellbook, and donate at the temple to get the first level
Cleric spells. Remember you must Rest uninterrupted for 12 hours to
actually learn the spells. Now you should be ready to actually enter
the Catacombs and slay the evil Macabath who lives below on the 3rd
level.
Do not attempt to fight any of the monsters IN the town until after
defeating Macabath, as before this they will probably prove too tough
for you to handle. From here on, you're on your own. Good luck, no
one said saving the world was easy!!
