  12.     The program, CPQVESA.EXE, provides support for the Video
  13.     Electronics Standards Association (VESA) Super VGA BIOS
  14.     Extension (VBE) when used with the appropriate Compaq
  15.     VGA-based graphics products.
  16.  
  17.     CPQVESA.EXE will provide VESA VBE support on Compaq
  18.     computers with any of the following graphics systems:
  19.  
  20.         Compaq QVision 1280 with 2 Mbyte video memory
  21.         Compaq QVision 1280 with 1 Mbyte video memory
  22.         Compaq QVision 1024 with 2 Mbyte video memory
  23.         Compaq QVision 1024 with 1 Mbyte video memory
  24.         Compaq QVision 1024 with 512 Kbytes video memory
  25.         Compaq Advanced VGA with 512 Kbytes video memory
  26.         Compaq Advanced VGA with 256 Kbytes video memory
  27.         Compaq Integrated Video Graphics System with
  28.                256 Kbytes video memory (132 column support)
  29.  
  30. Note:   Compaq Prolinea 386 and 486-based PCs are not supported
  31.         by CPQVESA.EXE.  See the paragraphs at the end of this file
  32.         for the VESA drivers required by these PCs.

  35. VERSION 1.11 ENHANCEMENTS:

  38. CPQVESA.EXE Version 1.11 adds the following enchancements/features.
  39.  
  40.     - New hardware support:
  41.          Compaq QVision 1280 boards
  42.          Compaq QVision 1024 with 2 Mbyte video memory

  44.     - Adds support for VESA VBE graphics mode:
  45.          1280 x 1024, 256 colors, mode 107h
  46.  
  47.     - Adds support for VESA VBE high-resolution text modes:
  48.          132 cols x 25 rows, mode 109h
  49.          132 cols x 43 rows, mode 10Ah
  50.          132 cols x 50 rows, mode 10Bh
  51.          132 cols x 60 rows, mode 10Ch

  53.     - Write TTY support for mode 105h (1024 x 768, 256 colors).  See

  65. CPQVESA SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
  66. ============================
  67.  
  68. CPQVESA.EXE requires MS-DOS version 3.31 or later for
  69. proper operation.
  70.  
  71.  
  72. CPQVESA INSTALLATION:
  73. =====================
  74.  
  75. Run CPQVESA.EXE in order to install VESA VBE support prior
  76. to running your VESA compliant application.  Applications
  77. which support VESA are able to query CPQVESA for information
  78. required to operate in one of the supported video modes.
  79.  
  80. The CPQVESA.EXE driver is a terminate and stay resident (TSR)
  81. program.  Once executed, it will remain in system memory until
  82. it is unloaded or the system is reset.
  83.  
  84. To load the driver, enter the following at the MS-DOS
  85. command prompt:
  86.  
  87.     CPQVESA
  88.  
  89. The driver will attempt to install itself into system
  90. memory.  If no errors are encountered, the driver will
  91. indicate that it has been successfully installed into
  92. system memory.
  93.  
  94. You may now run a software application that has been
  95. configured to use an installed VESA VBE driver.
  96.  
  97. Once you are finished running the application, you may
  98. unload the VESA VBE driver from memory by typing the following
  99. at the MS-DOS command prompt:
  100.  
  101.     CPQVESA UNLOAD
  102.  
  103. This will cause the driver to attempt to remove itself from
  104. system memory.  If no errors are encountered, the driver
  105. will indicate that it has been removed from memory.
  106.  
  107.  
  108. CPQVESA COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS:
  109. ================================
  110.  
  111. CPQVESA supports several configuration options.  To
  112. view a list of these options without loading the driver
  113. enter the following line at the MS-DOS command prompt:
  114.  
  115.     CPQVESA HELP
  116.  
  117.  
  118. Monitor Specification:
  119. ----------------------
  120.  
  121. CPQVESA supports a broad range of Compaq and non-Compaq
  122. high resolution monitors.  When using a QVision graphics
  123. adapter and a Compaq monitor, CPQVESA will automatically
  124. detect the attached monitor type and use the appropriate
  125. monitor timings.  When the monitor type cannot be
  126. determined, CPQVESA will use timings for a standard VGA
  127. monitor.
  128.  
  129. NOTE:  For systems with an Advanced VGA (AVGA) or an
  130.        Integrated Video Graphics System (IVGS), you MUST
  131.        specify the attached monitor.  Otherwise, standard
  132.        VGA monitor timings will be used.  AVGA and IVGS
  133.        boards cannot detect the type of monitor attached.
  134.  
  135. Use the monitor command line options to modify the default
  136. monitor type.  For example, if you are using a non-Compaq
  137. monitor that is capable of operating at a 75 Hz vertical
  138. refresh rate, enter
  139.  
  140.     CPQVESA ALT4
  141.  
  142. to load VESA VBE support for your monitor.  Use the
  143. HELP command line parameter to view a list of supported
  144. monitors.
  145.  
  146.  
  147. Displaying available VESA VBE modes:
  148. ------------------------------------
  149.  
  150. The LIST command line parameter displays the current
  151. graphics information without actually loading the CPQVESA
  152. driver into memory.  This information includes the detected
  153. graphics adapter, the selected monitor, and the supported
  154. VESA VBE modes.
  155.  
  156. To use the LIST command, specify all options as if you were
  157. loading the driver.  If you have an ALT4 monitor then
  158. specify ALT4 for the monitor type when you use the LIST
  159. command.  For example, type
  160.  
  161.     CPQVESA ALT4 LIST
  162.  
  163. to view a list of modes supported on the current graphics
  164. adapter with an ALT4 monitor.
  165.  
  166.  
  167. FBPITCH command line option - Bytes-Per-Scanline return value:
  168. --------------------------------------------------------------
  169.  
  170. During normal application/driver interface, the VESA VBE driver
  171. returns graphics information to the application program. One
  172. piece of information that is returned is the number of bytes
  173. per scanline.  Most applications expect that value to match
  174. the horizontal resolution.  This is the default mode of
  175. operation.  However, there are some applications that require
  176. bytes per scanline to equal the actual physical width of the
  177. frame buffer.  When the FBPITCH command line parameter is
  178. used, then the VESA VBE driver returns the actual frame buffer
  179. pitch in the bytes per scanline value.  For example
  180.  
  181.     CPQVESA ALT4 FBPITCH
  182.  
  183. instructs CPQVESA to use modes supported by the ALT4
  184. monitor and to return the physical frame buffer width for
  185. the bytes per scanline value.
  186.  
  187. You may need to use this option if the display looks
  188. distorted with several vertical copies of the resulting
  189. image on the screen.
  190.  
  191.  
  192. WRITE TTY SUPPORT:
  193. ==================
  194.  
  195. CPQVESA.EXE version 1.11 adds full BIOS write TTY support
  196. for VESA VBE mode 105h.  Write TTY support allows text to be
  197. displayed while in a graphics mode by using the INT 10h
  198. write TTY function.
  199.  
  200. NOTE:  In order to perform TTY functions, the graphics
  201.        adapter must have "Extended ROM Support" enabled. 
  202.        Extended ROM Support is enabled by running the EISA
  203.        configuration utility for EISA boards or setting
  204.        the proper dip switch for ISA boards. Refer to
  205.        the documentation that came with your board for more
  206.        details on how to set Extended ROM Support.
  207.  
  208.  
  209. RUNNING VESA VBE APPLICATIONS UNDER WINDOWS:
  210. ============================================
  211.  
  212. In order to run VESA VBE applications under Microsoft
  213. Windows, they must be run in a full-screen DOS window.  The
  214. modes available while running under Windows depend on the
  215. specific version of the Compaq QVision Windows driver.
  216. Since the Windows driver must virtualize the DOS session,
  217. i.e. save the current state, certain versions of the
  218. Windows drivers do not support all the high-resolution
  219. graphics modes for DOS sessions.  Therefore, even if the
  220. graphics adapter you are running on supports a
  221. high-resolution mode, unless the Windows driver can
  222. virtualize that mode, the mode will not be available to the
  223. VESA VBE driver when running in a DOS window.  If your
  224. version of the Compaq QVision Windows driver does not
  225. support super VGA modes, then you may need to get a later
  226. version of the Compaq Windows driver.  Contact your
  227. Authorized Compaq Dealer or Compaq Technical Support at

  234. CPQVESA APPLICATION SUPPORT:
  235. ============================
  236.  
  237. It is Compaq's intent to support all software applications
  238. that are fully compliant with the VESA VBE standard.
  239.  
  240. In the past, however, some applications that have claimed to
  241. be fully "VESA VBE-compatible", have been found to violate the
  242. VESA VBE standard, yielding unpredictable behavior.  These
  243. applications often make assumptions about how a VESA driver
  244. will be configured while in the super VGA display modes
  245. (ie. window size, window granularity, window access types,
  246. window locations, display pitch, etc).

  248. The following is a list of software applications that are
  249. known to provide well-behaved VESA VBE support when used
  250. with CPQVESA.EXE:

  264. VESA VBE DRIVER/HARDWARE SUPPORT:
  265. ==================================

  267. There are three different VESA VBE display drivers
  268. available for Compaq equipment.  Each driver is specific to
  269. particular hardware.  The paragraphs below describe which
  270. diskette, containing the VESA VBE driver, is needed for the
  271. specified hardware.
  272.  
  273. You may decide that you need the VESA VBE driver from one 
  274. of the Prolinea Supplemental Video Programs diskette.  You
  275. can either download the files from the Compaq Forum on
  276. Compuserve.  Or you can contact your Authorized Compaq
  277. Dealer or Compaq Technical Support at
