1. Imperial Academy: The Trap is Set! (You might want to skip this)
The hangar had begun to shake violently.
Kyle hurried up the ramp of the shuttle, which was now violently jumping
on its landing skids. Distant explosions from the inside told him the
warranty on the Arc Hammer had just expired. He ignited the shuttle's
engines at once. The ship hummed up in protest, as the repulsors lifted
the ship from its unstable resting place. Kyle didn't had time for the
engines to heat up. He put them on full throttle and hoped they wouldn't
shut off from the effort.
He managed to take one last view across the hangar, where the inert body
of General Mohc lied still embedded on the Dark Trooper armor. Some of the
missiles had come a little too close, and Kyle's armor was badly damaged.
The shuttle was picking up speed, and Kyle concentrated on getting out
of the exploding ship. When he was entering open space, explosions came
through the hull of the Arc Hammer, and the great Imperial weapons factory
became a ball of fire. As the nava computer was making the calculations for
the jump to lightspeed, Kyle felt something. Someone on the bridge of the
Executor was watching him. Sure, he thought, all the crew is watching this
ship, knowing that the responsible one is getting out on it. If he wasn't
fast enough he would have TIE Fighters on him on a microsecond. He could
swear that someone was watching HIM, Kyle Katarn, with not only hate but
admiration. As if he had proven a worthy opponent to a formidable foe...
"Are you awake, Kyle?". Kyle turned around to see the face of Jan Ors
looking at him. It had been one full year since the destruction of the
Arc Hammer, and he couldn't stop replaying the episode in his mind. But
now he had other things to think about.
"Jan, have you heard the last report that was intercepted from Imperial
Communications?". They were sitting down on one of the rest areas of a
Rebel frigate. A report had been made public recently, announcing that
Imperial forces were moving away from a very exclusive area. "So?",
whistled Jan, "the Empire moves from one place to another ..". "The moon
of Revetahw, Jan", Kyle interrupted, "that's where I was trained". Jan's
face turned pale. "Kyle, you're not thinking...". "I was just thinking.
I should drop by and say hi. Or better yet, I'll make them a gift".
Jan got up like if a Mynock had just appeared on the table. "You're mad.
Insane. Crazy". She put both her arms on his shoulders and whispered,
"the Alliance will never approve of it". "They don't take part in it,
Jan. It's my idea". "So you're just going to walk in there with your
Palpatine lunch box full of thermal detonators...". "Actually, I thought
sequencer charges should work better", said Kyle. "We are not doing this
Kyle", she hissed, "we are not". "You're right, Jan, WE are not".
Jan's face changed. She didn't like for him to take decisions for them
both. She also hated to be left out. "I'm not letting you take the Crow
into such a place and leave it there on autopilot. If you want to get
killed...", she sighted, "I'll report you". "Go. Call Mothma. I'll be
long gone when you come back". She looked at him fiercely. "It is not
a fun place, Kyle, too close to the Corporate Sector. Revetahw was also
in the flight path of the Arc Hammer. Remember the Arc Hammer, Kyle?".
Kyle got up and started walking away from her. A moment later, the Crow,
with Kyle on the back and Jan Ors on the pilot seat, left the frigate
and set course for the moon of Revetahw.
2. Getting Serious
Long introduction, huh? Well, I'm sorry, I really thought the level
deserved a plot. Originally it was planned as the sequel to Imperial
Residence, but it grew a life of its own. It actually takes place on
the Star Wars universe of Kyle Katarn. Now:
- The level is new. All dificulty settings are implemented.
- The briefing and mission objectives are customized.
- The cutscenes (including the intro) have been rearranged. Watch them.
- Three of the new 3DOs are the Interceptor, the Bomber and the Defender,
part of Paul Nemesh's T.I.E. collection, DF3DOS.
- The other 3DO is an Attacking T.I.E. Fighter. I will put this one on
a separate package so you can use it on your levels (TIEATACK).
- There are two new textures: one is a different loading screen and the
other was extracted from a multiple switch texture for a certain wall.
- A particular emphasis has been made on puzzles.
- Some of the enemies you encounter are twice as hard to beat thanks to
multiple logic.
- Some of the secret sectors are required, others are just for fun.
(Added on Version 1.1)
- This version fixes a few unsolveable situations (sorry).
- The Deep Access Elevators no longer will be inaccessible when you
die. Also, they'll identify when operated so you know you're on one.
- Extra Lives have been added on critical places.
- Another few minor changes to prevent getting trapped here and there.
The files included in this package are:
* ACADEMY.BAT A very useful batch file, 2Kb
* ACADEMY.DOC The file you are reading, 13Kb
* ACADEMY.GOB The Imperial Academy GOB, 1.3 Mb
* ACADEMY.LFD The customized briefings, 143Kb
* ACADEMY.TXT A short readme for sites, 3Kb
3. Running the Level (READ THIS)
Extract all the files from the ACADEMYA.ZIP pack. You will need
specifically these three: ACADEMY.BAT, ACADEMY.GOB & ACADEMY.LFD
Put ALL of them into your main Dark Forces directory (Like C:\DARK)
and type: academy [Enter]. The batch file will do the rest.
4. Why you MUST use the batch file ACADEMY.BAT
To run Imperial Academy with its customized briefing, here's what you
must do manually:
- Backup the file DFBRIEF.LFD on the LFD directory to another name
(the batch file renames it as DFBRIEF.OLD).
- Copy the file ACADEMY.LFD to DFBRIEF.LFD and put it on the LFD directory.
- Start the level typing dark -uacademy.gob.
- When you are finished playing, erase the new DFBRIEF.LFD file from LFD
(The only briefing is contains is a modified ROBOTICS)
- Restore the old DFBRIEF.LFD file on the LFD directory.
All this is done by the batch file. The file looks for ACADEMY.LFD
on your main DF directory, if it isn't there it will start the level
without customized briefings.
The batch file creates two additional files during run time:
DFBRIEF.OLD on your LFD directory, which is the backup copy of your
original briefings, and IA.BAT on your main DF directory, which is a
very small batch file that runs the level using very little memory,
the big batch file is unloaded from memory while the game runs.
5. For Macintosh Users
Unfortunately, I do not have the means to test the level on a Macintosh.
I have been told the LFD does not work, you can dump it unless you find
a way to use it. Dump also the BAT file. The new waiting screen seems to
disagree with the Mac (WAIT.BM). Dump it (sob).
Since you won't see the briefing, you must know that Jan Ors informs
Kyle of the possible locations of the three Deep Access Elevators:
The Sewers, the Computer Mainframe Core and the Main Office Building.
She also warns him the Sewers might be a toxic area, so Kyle must find
a mask or better yet, the control switch for the toxic filter. She also
warns him about not going through with this crazy idea, but that would
mean no fun, of course.
6. Troubleshooting (Sounds very serious, but it isn't)
This level was designed and tested on a 486DX2 50MHz with 8Mb RAM,
with full DF installation, plus I also used the CD.ID trick to save
memory by not loading CD drivers.
* My biggest concern is that you interrupt the batch file, or that you
decide to reboot the machine WHILE you were playing the level. If
that happens and you run original DF, the custom LFD will probably
make the game crash since it only has a customized ROBOTICS briefing.
To fix that, type: academy off [Enter]. The batch file will restore
the original LFD.
* If you encounter any other problems
Remember there is always a fresh copy of the DFBRIEF.LFD file on the
CD. Just remember to copy it to your LFD directory and set read-only
to off. You can always erase all ACADEMY.* files from the hard disk.
To avoid problems, use the batch file and exit normally. You will be
able to play the original levels right away.
7. Known & Fixed Bugs on this Version
- A few HOMS (House of Mirrors effectS) on large areas, but only if you
are moving fast and/or you have a lot of enemies around. Not critical.
Since my graphics card is lousy, any better one will run smoothly.
- It requires a LOT of your 8Mb but it runs on it: maximize your memory,
(This level was designed and play-tested entirely on full 8Mb)
- On version 1.0 you'd die and become unable to use any of the three
Deep Access Elevators. This has been fixed.

Authors may not use this level as a base to build additional
levels. It's just to big to do that. You can e-mail me if you
want to know how something works.
You may distribute this level, provided you include all files,
with no modifications except for Macintosh conversion. Please
pass it along your friends and send me your opinions.
I am not responsible for any damage that this files may cause.
Specially since I don't know a way this files can cause damage.
9. Acknowledgements :)

also for answering a lot of questions.
- Richard M. Gold, for answering an enormous number of questions.
- Paul Nemesh, for the DF3DOS T.I.E. Fighter Collection

- Brad Oliver, for the Dark Forces for the Macintosh Stuff homepage,
also for answering a few Mac questions.
- Ivan Cockrum, for finding the bugs on Version 1.0.
10. A Final Word :(
Play it like you would play a new game. Watch it all, sit through the
LucasArts logo, it's a new intro. Watch the before and after cutscenes,
read the briefing, check your mission objectives & secrets.
One hint: Watch your ammo!
My apologies for the bugs on version 1.0. Hopefully this level will be
bug free. Apparently this level was too easy for a lot of people out
there. Oh well, I believe there is enough space for all kinds of levels
in this galaxy. I had fun making it anyway. Wait... that's not true.
There were times I wanted to sent the whole dawned thing to hell! I
got so mad I would leave it for weeks. (It took about six months to do
this little thing). Well, I enjoyed it when the puzzles worked.
