  11. 1.  The New GEnie for Windows
  12.  
  13. In order to make GEnie more responsive to your needs, we have redesigned 
  14. the look and feel of our service.  The new graphical interface provides 
  15. more than point-and-click access to GEnie.  We have added many new 
  16. features that will help you find the information you need, quickly and 
  17. easily.

  19. We have redesigned the graphical interfaces for a number of our 
  20. services, including:
  21.  
  22.     Electronic Mail: a powerful yet easy-to-use system for sending 
  23.     information to others electronically.
  24.  
  25.     RoundTables: as the name implies, RoundTables are places for 
  26.     people with common interests to  gather and exchange news, 
  27.     views, and ideas.  Think of them as electronic clubs.
  28.  
  29.     Bulletin Boards: are places where you can read and respond to 
  30.     messages posted by others.  It's the perfect place to swap 
  31.     information, get solutions to problems, or discuss topics of 
  32.     interest.
  33.  
  34.     Software Libraries: contain the latest versions of popular 
  35.     software and informational files you can download to your 
  36.     computer.

  38.     Real Time Conferences: the Real Time Conference (RTC) service
  39.     is an electronic meeting place where users gather to discuss 
  40.     topics of interest.  Each RTC contains "rooms" where System 
  41.     Operators schedule guest speakers or set up special discussion 
  42.     groups on a particular theme.

  44.     Chat Lines: enable users to talk to other people from all over 
  45.     the globe - all from your computer keyboard.

  47. These are just a few of the exciting changes we have made to GEnie.  We 
  48. invite to log on and explore our redesigned services.  We would 
  49. appreciate hearing your comments about the new GEnie for Windows 2.0 so 
  50. that we can continue to deliver the services that you want.

  54. 2.  Joining GEnie
  55.  
  56. When you click on the GEnie for Windows icon for the first time, you'll 
  57. see the Signup Information window, where you'll get started.
  58.

  60. To make the signup process go smoothly, take a few minutes now to gather 
  61. the information you will need:
  62.  
  63.  
  64.     1. Your special Offer Code (if you received GEnie for Windows 
  65.        through a special offer) or your Buddy's GE Mail (if a friend 
  66.        told you about GEnie).
  67.     2. Any special modem setup string you need for your modem brand.
  68.     3. Your credit card number for your account billing.  In the 
  69.        United States, you may have  your bill automatically paid 
  70.        from your checking account.  If you wish that method of 
  71.           payment, have your checkbook handy.
  72.  
  73. Turn on your printer so you can have a printed copy of your signup 
  74. information.  You'll see the Signup Information window as soon as you 
  75. click on the GEnie for Windows icon.  If you don't want to signup at 
  76. this time, or if you are already a member, click Cancel.  (You can 
  77. signup at a later time by choosing Signup to GEnie from the Online 
  78. menu.)

  80. Signup Information
  81. Type your signup information in the boxes.  You can move from box to box 
  82. with your Tab key (Shift-Tab to go back) or by clicking your cursor in a 
  83. box.  You will need your Mother's Maiden Name (last name only is OK).  
  84. This may be used by GEnie Client Services to verify your identity if you 
  85. call for information on your account.  If your mailing address is not 
  86. the same as your home address, click to remove the X before typing your 
  87. home address.  When you have finished, Save the information for your 
  88. records, then click Proceed.

  90. Connection Settings
  91. Do not change any of the information in the "Reaching GEnie" area. It is 
  92. set for your signup.  In the "Your Computer" area, click on Auto 
  93. Configure.  If you have a special modem setup, change the Modem Setup 
  94. box.  Click OK when you are finished with your settings.

  96. GEnie Connection
  97. After you enter your signup and connection information, you will be 
  98. connected to GEnie.  Watch the lower right corner to make sure that 
  99. special welcome information is being requested.

  101. Welcome/Signup Offer
  102. You'll see the terms of your signup offer.  Save a copy by clicking the 
  103. Save button.  We suggest you Print a copy as well by clicking the Print 
  104. button.  Then click Proceed.

  106. GEnie Access Numbers
  107. A list of access numbers in your area code will be presented.  Choose a 
  108. number by clicking on it.  Save and print a copy of this list.  Then 
  109. click Proceed.

  111. GEnie User Agreement
  112. Read the GEnie Service Terms and Conditions.  If you do not agree with 
  113. these terms, click Disagree and your signup will terminate.  If you 
  114. agree, Save and Print.  Then click Proceed.

  116. Billing Information
  117. Click in the circle next to your preferred Payment Method.  Complete the 
  118. Account Information.  Click Save to save the information.  Then click 
  119. Proceed.

  121. GEnie Account Information
  122. As soon as you complete your billing information, you will be logged off 
  123. and a window will show all of your GEnie account information.  Write 
  124. down your User ID, Password, GE Mail ID, your Internet Mail Address and 
  125. your Local Phone Number.  At the bottom of the window, click in the box 
  126. to Save ID, Password, GE Mail ID and Phone Number for GEnie for Windows. 
  127. Click Yes to immediately log on to GEnie with your new account.  
  128. Congratulations! You're now a new GEnie member!
