* Bulletin Board Service information
Anyone with access to a PC, the appropriate terminal emulation software and a MODEM can
access the McAfee BBS. A BBS is quite simply a computer system that allows many remote
computers to dial-in simultaneously in order to copy files and have general access to
technical notes etc. Once connected, both existing and potential customers can download
evaluation copies of McAfee software and view on-line technical support documents. Those
customers who have bought and REGISTERED their software may also download updates and
upgrades.
The information in this document should be used as a guide to customers who have purchased
McAfee software and wish to access the McAfee BBS to either update/upgrade their software
or take a look at what other exciting software McAfee have to offer in the evaluation area.
Instructions for accessing the McAfee BBS and downloading files are broken down into the
following sections:
A - Accessing the McAfee BBS from a WINDOWS 95 PC
B - Accessing the McAfee BBS from a WINDOWS 3.x PC
C - Accessing the McAfee BBS from a DOS ONLY PC
D - Logging in to the McAfee BBS
E - Downloading files from the McAfee BBS
F - Updating your Software and Anti-Virus Definitions
G - Problems Connecting to the BBS
A - Accessing the McAfee BBS from a WINDOWS 95 PC
The following instructions assume you have a modem attached to you machine and recognised
by your Windows 95 operating system. Windows 95 contains a software package called
"HyperTerminal" as a standard installed application. It is recommended you use
HyperTerminal as the method of accessing the BBS. If you do not see HyperTerminal listed
when you follow these instructions, you may need to re-install it from your original
Windows 95 disks/CD - if you need assistance with this process, contact Microsoft
technical support:
1. Choose Start, Programs, Accessories, HyperTerminal. Then, double-click the "Hypetrm"
icon, this will take you into the HyperTerminal application and prompt you to enter a
name.
2. At the "Name" prompt, type "McAfee BBS" and click OK. The software will now prompt you
to enter a number to dial. At this point you should enter the appropriate area code and
number (listed under Contact Information) of the McAfee BBS closest to where you are
calling from. For example, if you are calling from the UK, you should enter "01344" as
the area code and "306890" as the number. Once you have input the area code and
telephone number, click OK.
3. Ensure that the appropriate location is displayed and click DIAL, HyperTerminal will
now dial the McAfee BBS. After a few seconds you will be prompted to select you
preferred language. If you only see a blank screen, press ENTER on your keyboard and
you should then be prompted to select a language. Select the desired language and you
will then be prompted to enter your Login ID.
4. Advance to section D for instructions on how to log in to the McAfee BBS
B - Accessing the McAfee BBS from a WINDOWS 3.x PC
The following instructions assume you have a modem attached to you machine and recognised
by your Microsoft Windows environment. Windows 3.x contains a software package called
"Terminal" as a standard installed application. It is recommended that you use "Terminal"
as the method of accessing the BBS. If you do not see "Terminal" listed when you follow
these instructions, you may need to re-install it from your original Windows 3.x
disks/CD - if you need assistance with this process, contact Microsoft technical support.
1. From Windows 3.x Program Manager, choose Windows, Accessories then double-click the
TERMINAL icon.
2. Select Settings, Phone Number and enter the appropriate BBS number as listed under
Contact Information, then click OK. For example, if you are dialing from the UK, enter
the BBS number as 01344 306890.
3. Select Settings, Comms and then select the appropriate baud rate (modem speed) that best
suits your modem. The McAfee BBS supports speeds up to 28800, if you are in doubt as to
the speed of your modem, try setting Terminal to use 9600. Once you have set the baud
rate, ensure that the correct COM port is being used. This is normally COM1 so try this
if you are in doubt. When you have made these changes, click OK to close this dialogue
box. Then select File, Save As and type "McAfee" as the filename. This will enable you
to open this saved setup for future connections to the McAfee BBS.
4. Now you are ready to connect to the McAfee BBS. To do this select Phone, Dial. The
Terminal software will now dial and connect to the McAfee BBS. Once connected you will
be prompted to select a language. Select the desired language and you will then be
prompted to enter your Login ID.
5. Advance to section D for instructions on how to log in to the McAfee BBS.
C - Accessing the BBS from a DOS ONLY PC
DOS users will need to use a Terminal Emulation software package. There are far too many
available to list separate instructions for each, however, to successfully access the
McAfee BBS you will need to use the following settings:
Baud Rate: 2,400 to 28,800bps
Bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop Bits: 1
Once you have established connection to the McAfee BBS, select your preferred language and
advance to section D for a guide through the log-in procedure.
D - Logging in to the McAfee BBS
1. When prompted for a Login ID, type the ID you have been provided with by Network
Associates (you will only be provided with your Login ID and password if you have
REGISTERED your software with Network Associates). Once you have typed your Login ID
(or Surname), press ENTER and you will then be asked to enter a password. Again, this
should be the password provided to you by Network Associates. If you have not yet been
provided with a password, you can enter a password of your choice. The Login ID and
password are case sensitive, when entering a Login ID and password for the first time
it is a good idea to type in lower case. Please make a note of your Login ID and
password and keep them in a safe place. If you have not REGISTERED your software with
Network Associates, you can enter your surname for temporary restricted access to the
BBS.
New customers should complete and send the registration card (To be found inside the
McAfee box) to the McAfee European Support Centre, as explained on the card. McAfee
will mail the customer with the access *name* and *password* to give you the rights to
access the licensed area of the BBS to obtain the latest versions of your software and
virus solutions files.
Existing customers who have not registered on the European BBS may do so faxing the
required details. This will normally entail providing proof of ownership, such as faxing
a copy of your purchase receipt, or by completing your registration card as above.
Entering your licensed *name* and *password* will automatically give you access to the
licensed area of the BBS for downloading new versions and updates.
2. When you have entered your password, press ENTER on your keyboard. You will now be
presented with the McAfee Welcome screen. When you see this screen you have successfully
logged-in to the McAfee BBS! After reading the Welcome Screen you can press ENTER to
advance to the McAfee BBS main menu. From here you are able to download files. See
section E for instructions on downloading files.
3. There is a time restriction of 20 minutes for your call, which is sufficient for
downloading any McAfee Anti-Virus product. However if you do require more time to be
allocated to your account, or would like to access all McAfee products for evaluation,
please call the European Support Centre on +31 (0)20-586-6144, giving them your name
and password. You will be given more time per day and extended access rights as
appropriate.
4. IF USING WINDOWS 95: When closing down your HyperTerminal window., choose "Yes" when
prompted to save your HyperTerminal session settings. This will enable you to simply
double-click the "McAfee BBS" icon next time you wish to access the McAfee BBS.
E - Downloading Files from the McAfee BBS
For the purposes of this exercise, these instructions will guide you through downloading a
monthly update for your anti-virus software. In order to ensure that you are getting the
maximum protection from your software, you should keep it up-to-date. This involves simply
downloading a file on a monthly basis and copying the contents of the file into the
directory where you installed your McAfee software. The following section describes the
procedure for downloading a file and section F describes the process of updating your
software with these downloaded files.
1. From the main menu of the McAfee BBS, select "F" for "File Areas" (Note: you do not need
to press carriage return after pressing the letter). You will now be presented with a
list of file categories available for download.
2. Highlight ".DAT file signature file upgrades" and press enter. You will be presented
with a list of ZIP files and TXT files. The TXT files contain lists of viruses detected
in their respective update. For example, "VIR9607.TXT" contains a list of all viruses
detected in the "DAT-9607.ZIP" signature file. At this stage, you may now press SPACEBAR
to tag the file(s) you wish to download. It is possible to select multiple files if you
wish, but it is recommended that where several updates are available for download, you
only download the most recent dated file as this will contain ALL the previous updates
within it. Once the file has been tagged, an asterisk will appear beside it, you may now
press Ctrl-D on your keyboard to download the file. Please note, if for some reason the
connection between your computer and the McAfee BBS is lost during file-transfer, next
time you connect and request the same file, the McAfee BBS will commence the transfer
from where it was interrupted until the transfer is successful. This is a feature of the
McAfee BBS designed to enhance the file-transfer process.
3. The system will now ask you if you wish to logoff after transfer. You may choose to do
so if you wish. The BBS will then send the file(s) you selected to your computer. The
file(s) will be stored in a directory on your computer pre-determined by the terminal
emulation software you are using. For Windows 95 users with HyperTerminal, this
directory will normally be: C:\PROGRAM FILES\ACCESSORIES\HYPERTERMINAL
4. Once the download has finished and you have logged-off from the BBS, you will need to
copy the update files into the directory on your PC to where you originally installed
the McAfee anti-virus software. Section F explains this process.
F - Updating your Software and Anti-Virus Definitions
McAfee updates are normally compiled within a ZIP file format. A ZIP file is a method of
compressing several files into a single file for purposes of manageability and quicker
downloads. Once you have the McAfee update stored on your PC, you will need to extract the
files and place them in the correct directory:
1. Because the ZIP format used to compress the updates is an industry-standard method, you
can use almost any file compression software to extract the update file. It is
recommended that to do this you use PKZIP/PKUNZIP which is a shareware application
available for download on the McAfee BBS under the file area "Miscellaneous files,
patches and info". If you choose to download the PKZIP/PKUNZIP program you will notice
this is a self-executing ZIP file which contains the actual program along with a full
set of instructions on how to compress and uncompress files. Once you have downloaded
the .EXE file, simply create a temporary directory (e.g. PKZIP) and copy it into the
directory on your PC. Once copied, run the file - this will extract all the component
files into the new directory you created.
2. Once you have these files in the new directory, simply copy the files into the directory
to where you installed the McAfee anti-virus software. For Windows 95 users with
VirusScan installed, this would normally be C:\PROGRAM FILES\MCAFEE\VIRUSSCAN95. When
copying these files, the system may ask you if you wish to overwrite the existing files
in this directory. If this is the case you should proceed with overwriting these files
as they are old signatures that the new ones will replace.
3. Once you have copied the files you can launch the McAfee anti-virus software and check
the date of the files by choosing Help, About from the menu bar. The last two digits of
the virus definition number follows a logical date sequence. For example, 3.0.3011
equates to a virus definition from November 1997.
4. This process should be completed at monthly intervals to maximize the protection your
software will provide.
G - Problems Connecting to the BBS
If you are having problems connecting to the BBS, please verify the following before
contacting Technical Support :
1. Modem settings are configured to 8 bits, 1 stop bit, no parity.
2. Protocol used is ZMODEM.
3. Speed is max. 28.8Kbps.
4. Your name and password are entered correctly (these items are case-sensitive!!).
If all of the above steps have been verified and you still cannot connect with our BBS,
please contact Technical Support at +31 (0)20-586-6144.
* FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions - Support for McAfee products
Q. How do McAfee deliver support now that I have bought a McAfee product?
A. In three ways:
* By telephone
* Electronically by modem (BBS and Website)
* By disk in the post - This is a chargeable option listed on the registration
card. (Except where our retail pack specifically includes Quarterly Disk Updates
in the price.)
Q. Do I automatically qualify for support from McAfee?
A. Yes, as soon as you register!
Q. How do I register?
A. Refer to the registration card inside the box. You will see how to complete the
card and where to send it. Following receipt of your registration card, McAfee
will issue you with your personal electronic support ID and log your details into
the McAfee support database.
Q. What sort of support will I get?
A. It depends upon what you have bought, and what additional support options you
decide to buy at the time of registering. Typically a single user box will enable
you to receive 90 days free telephone support, one free product upgrade from a
McAfee electronic site, and unlimited virus updates by modem for the lifetime of
your current product engine version. Multiple user license boxes include 2 years'
support by telephone and modem. We call this "Electronic" Support.
Q. What is "Electronic" Support?
A. McAfee maintain the very latest versions of our software on "electronic" sites,
such as our Bulletin Board (BBS), the McAfee Website (http://www.nai.com) and
CompuServe (GO NAI). By giving you access to these sites, you are able to download
on demand the latest version of your software to keep you up to date with product
enhancements. It includes access to our teams of product specialists who will talk
you through any questions you may have by telephone. You need never be alone with
McAfee!
Q. How do I keep my anti-virus capability up to date?
A. This is one of the benefits of electronic support. McAfee make our new anti-virus
signature files available to all, by publishing a new set of data files every
month. To get the latest set of files all you need to do is dial your local BBS
(telephone are listed under Contact Information), or look at the McAfee Website
(http://www.nai.com) where you will see an option "Get that DAT!". Simply download
this file, uncompress it and you will be automatically brought up to date. You can
get these new virus signature files regardless of whether or not you are
registered. So if you buy a box and find that the existing data file is a little
out of date, just go straight to our BBS evaluation area, or the McAfee Website
and get the latest DAT files.
Q. Where should I store the ".zip" files that I have downloaded? Will I do any harm to my
existing files?
A. We recommend that you store your files on your a: drive (floppy), or to a "TEMP"
directory on your hard disk. This ensures that you can keep control of the process.
When you unzip your files the result is a new set of programs or data files, and
these can then be copied across to your VirusScan directory as appropriate. Some
"unzippers" will prompt you for a destination directory, in which case you can
specify the appropriate directory.
Q. What is in the virus signature ".zip" files?
A. There are three data files: clean.dat, names.dat, and scan.dat and one or two
information files such as "packing.lst", or "whatsnew.txt". All these files can be
safely copied over the existing files, thereby updating your anti-virus armory.
Q. What do I do if I do not have a modem?
A. All McAfee retail packs include an option on the registration card to buy one year
of quarterly disk updates sent by post. This is a chargeable option. Please note
that some McAfee products include quarterly disk updates in the price, and the
registration card automatically registers you for this service.
Q. Why do McAfee put so much emphasis on electronic support?
A. Over 100 new viruses appear every month and we want to deliver new solutions to
these viruses to you as quickly as possible. By enabling you to download new virus
solutions files from our electronic sites, we are minimizing your exposure and
providing the best protection in the shortest time. Generally we make new virus
solutions files available in a .zip file every month.
Q. As an insurance policy can I get disks sent to me by mail?
A. Certainly! You will see on the registration card an option to buy a year's worth of
quarterly disk updates. If you wish to have these updates by post you will need to
enclose the appropriate payment or your credit card details when you send in your
registration card.
Q. Do any McAfee products include quarterly disks by post in the retail price?
A. Yes, we have a version of VirusScan that includes 1 year of support and quarterly
disks by post for 1 year. The part number for this product begins with "VSQ...".
If you are not sure, please look at the base of the box.
Q. You refer to downloads, upgrades and updates. What do these terms mean?
A. Here is a brief glossary of terms:
* Download - The process of transferring a program or data from one computer
(McAfee) to your own. You need a modem and some communications software to do
this. McAfee customers may choose to download from:
The McAfee Bulletin Board (Numbers are under Contact Information)
The McAfee website http://www.nai.com
America Online NAI
CompuServe GO NAI
Microsoft Network NAI
Note: Any caller to our electronic sites can download evaluation software. Access to the
"licensed" areas of our electronic sites is only available to registered customers.
* Upgrade - A new version of the software, such as VirusScan v2.2.f upgrade to
VirusScan v2.5.1. This is also referred to as an engine upgrade.
* Update - A new set of data files, such as the monthly virus solutions file. For
example you may want to bring your VirusScan up to date by downloading
dat3011.zip (November 1997), to replace your dat3007 (July 1997) files. Updates
are usually available in a ".zip" file, which is a compressed file. Once you have
downloaded the .zip file, you should "unzip" it into your VirusScan directory.
The .zip data file contains three main files, names.dat, clean.dat and scan.dat.
These are then simply copied over the existing .dat files. The scanning engine
will then use the new .dat files as its "knowledge base".
* Unzipping - If you do not have an "unzipper" then you may download "pkunzip"
from our electronic sites.
* Bulletin Board Service (BBS) - This is an electronic site which you can dial into
to download software and new data files. It is a direct dial up between your
computer and our computer, unlike the Internet Website which has many users all
accessing the same site at the same time. BBS is usually faster for downloads,
but is not quite so graphically friendly!
Q. What should I do if I change my operating system?
A. More good news! Your license entitles you to transfer your VirusScan to a different
operating system. For example if you move from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95, you may
download the Windows 95 version. Please note, however, that you must have a current
electronic support contract in place, as this is a version upgrade.
Q. How will I know if I my support is still valid?
A. Your password is time limited. If you find that you are unable to access the
licensed area of the McAfee BBS with your current password, then it may have
expired.
Q. What happens at the end of my support contract?
A. McAfee will contact you to invite you to renew for a further year.
Q. Where do I look for more information?
A. The McAfee Website (http://www.nai.com) is one of the world's most popular sites.
It offers the opportunity to receive product information, go shopping, download
evaluation software and many other activities.
