  101. To run Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools, your 
  102. computer must meet the following minimum requirements:
  103.  
  104. - A 486 with a 66 MHz (megahertz) processor (Pentium processor 
  105.     recommended)
  106.  
  107. - For Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98:
  108.   16 MB (megabytes) of RAM (random access memory) minimum
  109.  
  110. - For Microsoft Windows NT(R) 4.0:
  111.   32 MB of RAM minimum
  112.   You must be running Service Pack 3 (or higher)

  114. - For Microsoft Windows 2000:

  141. Disk-Space Requirements for Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1

  144. Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools Setup installs 
  145. the majority of its files on the drive where the Windows operating 
  146. system is installed, regardless of the installation location you 
  147. chose. To free up space on your hard disk in order to meet the 
  148. Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 disk-space installation requirements, 
  149. you must free up space on the drive where the Windows operating 
  150. system is installed.

  153. SETUP
  154. =====
  155.  
  156. Installing Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools
  157. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  158. Whether you choose to install over the network or download the 
  159. installation files to your hard disk, some or all of the Setup 
  160. files are copied to your hard disk. This allows you to reinstall 
  161. more quickly if necessary. If you want to reclaim the disk space, 
  162. you can remove the Setup directory as follows:
  163.  
  164. 1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs, and then click 
  165.    Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools. 
  166.  
  167. 2. Click Add/Remove, make sure the check box for Restore the Previous 
  168.    Windows Configuration is selected, and then click Advanced.
  169.  
  170. 3. Click the option named Remove Folder Containing Windows Update Setup 
  171.    Files, and then click OK. 
  172.  
  173. 4. When asked whether you want to continue, click Yes.
  174.  
  175. 5. Click OK in the next dialog boxes.
  176.  
  177. You cannot install Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools 
  178. to or run it from a network drive. However, you can download it to a network 
  179. drive. To do this, you must map the network drive to a drive letter on 
  180. your computer; you cannot download Internet Explorer 5.5 to a UNC path.
  181.

  183. Running Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
  184. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
  185.  
  186.  Note
  187.  You must have administrative privileges to install 
  188.  and uninstall this program on Windows NT. This includes 
  189.  having administrative privileges the first time you 
  190.  start your computer after installing or uninstalling.
  191.  
  192. You must restart your computer after installing Internet Explorer 
  193. 5.5 and Internet Tools. This is also true for some add-on 
  194. components.
  195.  
  196. For corporate deployment on computers running Windows NT 4.0, 
  197. make sure you have the following free registry space:
  198.  
  199. - If you are upgrading from Internet Explorer 2.0 or 
  200.   Internet Explorer 3.x: at least 4 MB
  201. - If you are upgrading from Internet Explorer 4.x:
  202.   at least 2.5 MB 
  203.  
  204. If you're running Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 on Windows NT 4.0, 
  205. you must set user permissions to Full Control for the Temporary 
  206. Internet Files folder (cache). The user must have write permission 
  207. so that files can be stored in the Temporary Internet Files folder.
  208.  
  209. If you must reinstall Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3 (SP3) after you 
  210. install Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools, you must 
  211. specify when prompted that you do not want it to overwrite any files that 
  212. are newer. After SP3 is reinstalled, carry out the following steps 
  213. to update the registry:
  214.  
  215. 1. Click the Start button, and then click Run.
  216.  
  217. 2. Type the following: regsvr32 rsabase.dll
  218.  
  219.  
  220. Installing Windows NT 4.0 Service Packs over Internet Explorer 5.5 
  221. ------------------------------------------------------------------
  222. If you reinstall a Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack after Internet 
  223. Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools is installed on your 
  224. computer, some components will need to be re-registered. To do this, carry 
  225. out the following steps:
  226.  
  227. 1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  228.  
  229. 2. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 
  230.    5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools.
  231.  
  232. 3. Click Add/Remove.
  233.  
  234. 4. Click Repair Internet Explorer, and then click OK.
  235.  
  236. 5. After the repair operation is complete, restart your computer.
  237.  
  238.  
  239. Installing over Windows 2000 Releases
  240. -------------------------------------
  241. Typical and Full installations are not currently available for Windows 2000. 
  242. Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 will install a minimal set of files into 
  243. your computer; this includes the Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 Web browser 
  244. and scripting support. Other components such as Outlook(R) Express are not 
  245. available for Windows 2000 at this time.

  248. Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 Before Upgrading to 
  249.   Windows 2000
  250. -------------------------------------------------------------------
  251. Windows 2000 contains an earlier version of Internet Explorer components.
  252. When upgrading from Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT to Windows 2000, 
  253. we recommend that you uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 before 
  254. the upgrade. 
  255.  
  256. Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 before Installing Internet Explorer 5.5
  257.   Service Pack 1 on Windows 2000.
  258. -------------------------------------------------------------------
  259. In order to preserve the ability to uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5
  260. Service Pack 1, we recommend that you uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 
  261. before upgrading to Internet Explorer Service Pack 1.
  262.  
  263. Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 Before Installing Windows 2000 
  264.   Service Pack(s).
  265. -------------------------------------------------------------------
  266. Windows 2000 Service Pack(s) contain an earlier version of Internet Explorer
  267. components. Before installing a Windows 2000 Service Pack, we recommend 
  268. that you uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 before the upgrade. 
  269. You may then reinstall Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1.
  270.  
  271. Downloading Internet Explorer by Using Third-Party Download Manager
  272. -------------------------------------------------------------------
  273. During the Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools installation, 
  274. Setup must download components from the Internet. If you are using third-party 
  275. download managers (for example, Netzip or GetRight) they will intercept 
  276. the download request. This will cause Setup to stop. To prevent this
  277. from occurring, first disable third-party download managers, and then run Setup.

  280. High Encryption Support For Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 
  281. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  282. High Encryption components are available on Windows 95, Windows 98,
  283. Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, and Windows NT 4.0. To obtain 
  284. high-encryption support for Windows 2000, please visit Windows Update or
  285. http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/recommended/encryption/default.asp

  288. Enhanced Encryption Strength
  289. ----------------------------
  290. Internet Explorer 5.5 now ships with a standard encryption strength of 128 bits 
  291. and supports the U.S. government standard for data encryption (DES). 128-bit 
  292. Internet Explorer 5.5 is eligible for distribution to all users worldwide except 
  293. in U.S.-embargoed destinations. For more information, visit the following Web site:

  297. Running Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 on a Dual-Boot Operating System
  298. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
  299. If you are running Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 on a computer that 
  300. is set up to dual boot between two operating systems on the same partition 
  301. (for example, Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0), and you have configured 
  302. the computer to share a single Program Files folder, you might have 
  303. problems with add-on components. 
  304.  
  305. Also, when you uninstall an add-on component from either copy of 
  306. Internet Explorer 5.5, it will be removed from both of them without 
  307. updating the other operating system's installed components information. 
  308.  
  309. These problems occur because the add-on files are all stored in the 
  310. shared Program Files folder, but information about installed add-on 
  311. components is stored elsewhere.
  312.  
  313.  
  314. Installing or Upgrading the Windows Desktop Update
  315. --------------------------------------------------
  316. To install or upgrade the Windows Desktop Update, you must install 
  317. Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 before you install Internet Explorer 5.5 
  318. and Internet Tools. 
  319.  
  320. If you have already installed Internet Explorer 5.5 and would like to 
  321. install the Windows Desktop Update, carry out the following steps:
  322.  
  323. 1. Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 by using the procedure listed 
  324.    later in this document.
  325.  
  326. 2. If Internet Explorer 4.01 SP2 is not already installed on your computer, 
  327.    install it.
  328.  
  329. 3. Install the Windows Desktop Update by using Add/Remove Programs in Control 
  330.    Panel.
  331.  
  332. 4. Reinstall Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools.
  333.  
  334.  
  335. Installing over Localized Windows 98 Arabic and Hebrew Releases
  336. ---------------------------------------------------------------
  337. Windows 98 Arabic and Hebrew versions require the corresponding 
  338. localized version of Internet Explorer 5.5. It is not possible to 
  339. install the English version of Internet Explorer over the localized 
  340. version of Windows 98. 
  341.  
  342. This restriction does not apply to localized versions of Windows 95 
  343. or Windows NT 4.0. However, you cannot install localized Arabic or 
  344. Hebrew Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 over localized Windows 95 
  345. (only English is supported). 
  346.  
  347.  
  348. Installing Outlook Express 5.x on Windows Terminal Server
  349. ---------------------------------------------------------
  350. Before installing Outlook Express 5.x on Windows Terminal Server, 
  351. the administrator needs to set a compatibility flag in the registry 
  352. in order for the Outlook Express 5.x Setup program to work correctly. 
  353. To do this, carry out the following steps: 
  354.  
  355. 1. Create this registry key: 
  356.  
  357.  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\
  358.  Compatibility\Applications\setup50 
  359.  
  360. 2. Set the following value under the new setup50 key (this value 
  361. should be of type REG_DWORD): 
  362.  
  363.  Flags = 0x108
  364.  
  365.  
  366. Installing on Windows 98 with Novell IPX/IP Client
  367. --------------------------------------------------
  368. If you are using Novell IPX/IP client with Windows 98, you might 
  369. experience problems if you install Internet Explorer 5.5 and Internet 
  370. Tools from the Internet. If Setup appears to become unresponsive, 
  371. restart your computer. Setup will continue and finish normally. To 
  372. work around this problem, try one of the following options:
  373.  
  374. - In Setup, select the Download Only option, and then run and install 
  375.   Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 normally.
  376.  
  377. - Install Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 from a CD-ROM.
  378.  
  379.  
  380. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools
  381. --------------------------------------------------------------------
  382. You can uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools by 
  383. carrying out the following steps:
  384.  
  385. 1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  386.  
  387. 2. Click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 and Internet Tools, 
  388.    and then click Add/Remove.
  389.  
  390. 3. Click Restore the Previous Windows Configuration, and then click OK.
  391.  
  392. 4. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  393.  
  394.  
  395. Uninstall for Previous Versions of Internet Explorer Unavailable
  396. ----------------------------------------------------------------
  397. If you uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1, you will not be able 
  398. to remove the browser that was installed prior to Internet Explorer 5.5.
  399.  
  400.  
  401. Uninstalling Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 Returns You to an Earlier 
  402.   Version
  403. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  404. When you install Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1, Setup examines your 
  405. system for the presence of uninstall data that had been created by a previous 
  406. installation. If Setup cannot find this data, it creates new uninstall data 
  407. for later use.
  408.  
  409. If you previously upgraded from Internet Explorer 4.x to 5.0 or 5.01, you 
  410. will have uninstall data that allows you to roll back to Internet Explorer 4.x. 
  411. Unless you explicitly removed the uninstall data using Add/Remove Programs 
  412. in Control Panel before upgrading to Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1, 
  413. this data will be preserved. When you uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 Service 
  414. Pack 1, it will use the existing uninstall data and roll back to 
  415. Internet Explorer 4.x.
  416.

  437. Using Download only
  438. -------------------
  439. In Internet Explorer 5.5, if you select the Download Only option you will not 
  440. be able to choose which components are downloaded and which are not. All the 
  441. cabinet (.cab) files for a full installation for the operating system you 
  442. choose are downloaded. There is no user interface in Windows 2000 to select 
  443. Download Only. 
  444.

  450. Windows 2000 Upgrade Exception Pack
  451. -----------------------------------
  452. Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 includes a component called the 
  453. Windows 2000 Upgrade Exception Pack.  This purpose of the Exception Pack is 
  454. to downgrade Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 in preparation for upgrade 
  455. to Windows 2000. Until the computer is upgraded to Windows 2000, the 
  456. Exception Pack is not invoked.  During the installation of Windows 2000, the 
  457. Exception Pack removes Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 registry keys 
  458. that are no longer needed or contrary to entries created by Windows 2000; 
  459. this ensures a problem-free upgrade.

  462. Outlook Express Removed After Uninstalling Internet Explorer
  463. ------------------------------------------------------------
  464. After you uninstall Internet Explorer and Outlook Express 5.01 or 
  465. Outlook Express 5.5 from a computer running Windows 98 Second Edition, 
  466. the previous version of Outlook Express is not restored.  For more 
  467. information about this issue, please see the following article in the

  472. MUI Settings when Upgrading to Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1
  473. -------------------------------------------------------------------
  474. After upgrading to Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 MUI Menu items may 
  475. display in English.  The language in question may not properly appear.  This 
  476. can fixed by reinstalling applicable MUI files.

  480. ADDITIONAL ISSUES
  481. =================
  482.  
  483. FTP User Interface and Functionality
  484. ------------------------------------
  485. If you discover an issue in the FTP user interface that blocks FTP 
  486. functionality, you can turn off this feature on the Advanced tab in the 
  487. Internet Options dialog box.
  488.  
  489. The following functionality is not supported:
  490.  
  491. - Internet connection via CERN or Web proxy servers.
  492. - Connecting to VAX or VMS FTP servers.
  493. - Using the browser from within a separate application or service.
  494. - Copying from server to server.
  495. - Drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste functionality from an FTP 
  496.   server is supported only on Windows 2000, Windows Me, and later.
  497.  
  498.  
  499. Font Display Issues
  500. -------------------
  501. If you run a non-Asian language version of Windows NT 4.0 and 
  502. you have installed many large fonts, the system's ability to use 
  503. those fonts may be exceeded. If Asian language Web pages are not 
  504. displayed correctly, install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5.
  505.  
  506.  
  507. Non-English Characters in URLs and Queries
  508. ------------------------------------------
  509. Internet Explorer 5.5 uses a new standard to transmit non-English addresses 
  510. (URLs) to the server. URLs are now encoded in a character-encoding standard 
  511. named UTF-8. If the server is running Windows 2000, the URLs will work as 
  512. expected. Many servers cannot process URLs encoded in UTF-8. To use 
  513. non-English characters in URLs with these servers, carry out the following 
  514. steps:
  515.  
  516. 1. On the Tools menu in the browser, click Internet Options.
  517.  
  518. 2. Click the Advanced tab.
  519.  
  520. 3. Under Browsing, clear the Always Send URLs As UTF-8 check box.
  521.  
  522. The query part of URLs is transmitted in a form fully compatible 
  523. with Internet Explorer 4 and above.
  524.  
  525.  
  526. Internet Explorer 4.x Compatibility Mode
  527. ----------------------------------------
  528. The Internet Explorer 4.x compatibility option is useful to Web

  623. Contacts Missing in Address Book After Uninstalling Windows Me

  625. When uninstalling Windows Millennium Edition (Me), contacts that 
  626. you added while using Windows Me might be missing from the Windows 
  627. Address Book. When you upgrade to Windows Me, the Windows Address 
  628. Book data file is backed up. During the uninstallation process, 
  629. the backup copy of the data file is restored, overwriting any data 
  630. that had been added in Windows Me. To preserve any contacts made 
  631. in Windows Me, back up the .wab file(s) before uninstalling.  
  632. After Windows Me has been removed, the .wab file(s) can be 
  633. recopied back into place and used if Internet Explorer 5.01

  707. HTML Buttons with Unselectable Attribute

  709. When the "unselectable" attribute in Internet Explorer 5.5 is applied 
  710. to buttons, the default onclick action (depressing the button) doesn't 
  711. take place. A simple workaround is to add a behavior to buttons that 
  712. causes this action. Add the following to the top of the file containing 
  713. the unselectable buttons (or to a CSS stylesheet that's referenced 
  714. from the  file):

  731. Task Scheduler in Windows NT 4.0
  732. --------------------------------
  733. Windows NT 4.0 included an old version of the Schedule service, 
  734. also known as At service (Atsvc.exe). Internet Explorer 5.5 
  735. upgrades it to the new version of the Schedule service, named 
  736. Task Scheduler (MSTask.exe) and converts At jobs to Scheduled 
  737. Tasks.
  738.  
  739. With the old At service, all At jobs had to run in the same 
  740. account as the service itself. The default account for the 
  741. service was the Local System account, but it could be changed 
  742. to another user account as needed. Some Windows NT 4.0 users 
  743. changed the At service's account because they needed their jobs 
  744. to run in a user account. 
  745.  
  746. With Task Scheduler, each scheduled task can be configured to 
  747. run in a different account. The Task Scheduler service itself 
  748. has to run in the Local System account.
  749.  
  750. For backward compatibility, Task Scheduler allows the user to 
  751. set one account to use when running scheduled tasks that were 
  752. created from At jobs. When Internet Explorer 5.5 is installed, 
  753. this account is set to the Local System account. If you are 
  754. running Windows NT 4.0 and you change the account that the At 
  755. service ran in to something other than the Local System account, 
  756. then after installing Internet Explorer 5.5 you need to manually 
  757. re-enter the user name and password for that account. To do this, 
  758. go to the Scheduled Tasks folder, click the Advanced menu, and then 
  759. click AT Service Account.

  761. This must be done manually because Internet Explorer 5.5 Service
  762. Pack 1 Setup cannot decrypt the password that was used by the 
  763. At service.
