WIG - Get Connected Today
What does it do?
WIG is a LAN E-Mail gateway which fits neatly inside Microsoft Exchange client as a service under Windows 95. Now your entire organisation can send and receive Internet mail with just one modem and one connection to an Internet provider. A dedicated server workstation is not required, neither are separate mail servers, MS Exchange Servers or other Internet gateways.
What mail clients does it work with?
WIG is a 32-bit MAPI driver and will therefore work with any MAPI enabled application. It is intended for use with OfficeTalk and MS Exchange For Windows 95 (the standard mail client supplied with Windows 95).
WIG also comes supplied with a 16-bit extension to MS Mail which allows MS Windows 3.11 MS Mail users to send Internet mail via WIG. It is a requirement that the WIG gateway machine is running Windows 95.
What is required to send mail over the Internet?
In addition to WIG or SIG, you will require:
- a modem or other connection hardware.
- subscription to an Internet provider via a dial-up or direct connection with collection of mail using POP3 or SMTP.
- dial-up networking installed on the gateway machine (supplied with Windows 95).
How does WIG work?
WIG expects that one machine in the workgroup is designated the gateway machine. This gateway machine must be connected to a modem; it is this machine which is responsible for sending and receiving Internet mail for the entire workgroup.
Whenever a WIG user sends an Internet message, this message, along with details of all the recipients and attachments, is written to a JET engine database. The gateway machine will periodically connect to the Internet in order to check for pending incoming messages for the workgroup.
When the gateway machine connects, it will check the JET engine database for messages waiting to be sent. It will then send those messages. Any messages coming down from the Internet will be written to the JET engine database.
Both the gateway and non-gateway machines will periodically check the JET engine database for messages sent to them. Messages received will be brought into your chosen mail client and displayed as incoming messages into the "In Box" of individual users.
