Speeding up your system
Tip If you find your machine runs extremely slowly when booting up or performing other standard Windows 95 functions such as opening Microsoft Word etc, you should check to see if your machine has any drives running in MS-DOS Compatibility Mode. To do this, go to Control Panel--System and then select the Performance tab. Check to see if there is a message that any drives are running in MS-DOS Compatibility Mode. This can result in considerable loss of performance from hard disks, CD-ROM drives etc. The standard methods to troubleshoot this problem include: ensuring that your hard disk controller is listed in Device Manager and has no conflicts, and also checking that the protected mode driver is present and in working order. | Category: Digital Helpline, Win95 Issue: May 1997 Pages: 178 |
