Your MacÆs basic networking language is AppleTalk, a particularly "chatty" style of networking that sends out frequent messages to the rest of the network to say the Mac is connected. This not only slows you down, it slows down the whole network and makes everybody grumpy.
To ease office relations, donÆt stay connected to servers youÆre not using. Once youÆve connected to a server, highlight its icon in the Finder and press CommandûM to make an alias of it, then drag the icon (not the alias) to the Trash. Next time you need to connect to the server, simply double-click on the alias youÆve created to connect quickly.
