More memory for Word

Q After using the "Typical installation" option to install Office 97 Professional, I find that everything works except Word, which returns the message that it does not have enough memory or disk space to run. After many re-installations with various components deselected, the only way to get Word up and running is to install using the "Run from CD" option, which, of course, is very slow. I have 64Mb of RAM and 1Gb of hard disk space. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A The solution to your problem may be quite straightforward: virtual memory may have been turned off on your computer, and simply needs to be turned on again. Even when you have a large amount of RAM installed, Word and all other Office 97 programs require virtual memory to be turned on in order to run under Windows 95. Virtual memory "borrows" part of your hard disk space and uses it as RAM, allowing Windows to operate faster and run more programs simultaneously.
To turn virtual memory on, double-click the System icon in the Windows 95 Control Panel, select the Performance tab, click the Virtual Memory button, and select the Let Windows manage my virtual memory settings (recommended) option. Make sure the Disable virtual memory (not recommended) box is not checked, and click OK. Close all open dialogue boxes and restart your computer. After rebooting, virtual memory will be turned on and Word 97 should run normally.

Use the this dialogue box to check that virtual memory is enabled on your system
